APPLEUMPKIN

By JACKIE KOCH jackie@tecumsehherald.com

Tecumseh’s 24th Annual Appleumpkin Festival will feature the Appleumpkin Stage and three acoustic music stages on both Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct. 15, showcasing local and Southeastern Michigan music. Longtime musician and Tecumseh resident Michael Snyder-Barker scheduled the acoustic stages for the third year in a row, gathering a wide variety of styles to add to the festival’s offerings. He will play in three different bands over the two days as part of the list of 25 acts on the schedule. On the Library Stage at 215 N. Ottawa St., Granberry Jam will start off the music at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The band consists of Ann Cebulski, Connie Aichele, George Aichele and Bill Sturk, who play kids’ music, old favorites, Irish and American traditional music, jazz standards from the 30s and 40s, and 50s-70s rock. Next up, Ear Candy, a three-part harmony group that performs popular

At 2 p.m., Matt Callis and Erik Mishke, otherwise known as Soup Sandwich, will play blues and rock songs, then at 3 p.m. The Mighty Rhythm Bandits will take the stage. The band, with members John Lowe, Michael Hintz and Snyder-Barker, will play rock, blues and original songs. Lastly, at 4 p.m. No Sin in Eden will perform pop, country, rock, alternative and folk music. The Depot stage at 160 E. Chicago Blvd. will feature Clinton resident and street musician Gary Perrine from 10 a.m. until 4:50 p.m. on Saturday, and the Shuttle Stage at 211 W. Chicago Blvd. will also begin the music at 10 a.m. with local singer/songwriter Mike Gentry performing his original songs. At 11:30 a.m., songwriter Mary Ann Kirt will take the stage, followed by Ypsilanti resident Laura Lee at 1 p.m. and Tipton resident and veteran musician J. Snyder-Barker is enthusiastic about the acts that will perform over the weekend. “I think they’re fantastic,” he said. “What I tried to focus on, on the library stage and to some degree on the Depot Stage, was local musicians. At the Library Stage all the bands and single artists have somebody that lives in Lenawee County that’s in the group.” With a wide variety of musical talent, festival goers will find music at every turn as they wind through Tecumseh’s streets during Appleumpkin Festival weekend.

Tecumseh has been called the bestkept secret in the state of Michigan, but now the secret is out! Festivals take place here too, including an art walk in the spring and of course, Appleumpkin. There are several nice B&Bs in Tecumseh, including the Vintage Boulevard Suite and the Loft. Chicago Boulevard is a great place to take a walk and window-shop. The suite is over the former Daily Grind Sandwich Shoppe and sleeps up to five, while the loft sleeps three.

APPLEUMPKIN | PAGE 11

Edited by: Brian Callaghan MLive, a division of Advance Publications, Inc., has named Tecumseh, Michigan #20 among the top 25 destinations for Fall day driving trips within the state. The article pointed out that Ten Pin Alley had recently been ranked among Michigan’s Top 10 Best

Bowling Alleys. Tecumseh Brewing Company was also named among Michigan’s best breweries. Lev’s Bakery earned distinction as one of Michigan’s best doughnut makers. And City Limits Diner & Pancake House was recommended as an excellent place for breakfast.

The folks of Tecumseh couldn’t agree more with the reporter at MLive. Tecumseh is slowly making a name for itself. In 2009, the city was ranked #93 by CNNMoney among the top 100 best small towns to live in. For a community with less than 9,000 residents, the word is getting

around. While we’re all proud of our fair city and appreciate the accolades, most of us would like to hold the chatter to a muffled sneeze, and keep Tecumseh best known to ourselves for the people and businesses who make it the wonderful hamlet it is.
