he 178th Annual Lenawee County Fair ended on Saturday, July 29 after a week of entertainment, rides, fireworks, demolition derbies, funnel cakes, livestock and more in the county seat of Adrian, closing out a week that saw dry weather and moderate temperatures compared to fair weeks in past years that were plagued by rain and searing heat. “We were blessed to have a great weather pattern that was bestowed upon us this year,” said Mark Vandenbusche, fair board president. Vandenbusche said the car show on Sunday, July 25, the first day of the fair, had a good turnout, as did the 4-H chicken barbeque. “That was a huge success this year, too,” he said. The fair in general was a success due to the hard work of the 30-member fair board, countless volunteers and 4-H members, office manager Tara Andrix, a full-time grounds and maintenance person and several part-time workers leading up to and during fair week, according to the president. A big part of the fair is the participation of youth in various 4-H clubs from all over the county, which provide programming for young members 5-8 years old in the Cloverbuds program and traditional clubs for members 9-19, focusing on leadership, citizenship and life skills. A new grandstand and a show barn and sale barn combination was completed just three weeks before the fair’s opening day, making for a more pleasant environment for family, friends and buyers attending 4-H events, Vandenbusche said. Thomas Zeigler of the Lenawee Wranglers 4-H club was taking a break Friday, July 28 in the poultry barn and shared what he likes about 4-H. “It’s a great chance to meet new people and learn about animals and other projects and things you can do,” he said. “It teaches you life skills.” His exhibits this year included chickens,

rabbits and static projects such as welding, herbology and mixed media painting. Zeigler is home-schooled and said he likes being at the fair and hanging out with friends that he doesn’t see much. His friend, Sherry Morgan of Palmyra, is a Blissfield Middle School student and said she is not in 4-H but enjoys the fair and is thinking about joining a club after seeing all the possibilities. Two and a half-year-old Aaron Gust took a nap on Betsy Gust’s lap while the two rested after a long week at the fair. “He’s exhausted,” said his mother, a Clayton resident. Her son, Ezra, is a member of the Lenawee Wranglers 4-H club. “He has a rabbit and we had to bring his projects in last Friday, too. He did photography and he has some crafts in Building A,” she said. “My other three are Cloverbuds, so they have projects out in Building B.” Sand Creek eighth grader Geo vrge Hillard, who was washing his steer outside the steer barn, said he spent three to four months preparing for this year’s fair. The member of the Lenawee Shooting Stars 4-H club is in his fourth year in 4-H and said he likes “That you can take animals and have fun,” and said his favorite thing about the fair is the food. The fair president was pleased with the week’s attendance. “All in all our shows went real well,”

I guess I can’t probably going to switch gears. We don’t know brag it enough, and a big thanks goes out to the where we’re going to go with it yet.
