Leader in Me program having positive results By JIM LINCOLN jim@tecumsehherald.com

T

he basis of a best selling book titled The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, authored by Stephen R. Covey, is having positive results for elementary school students attending Tecumseh Public Schools, where the Leader in Me program is being taught to help students succeed. Students in each of the schools — Herrick Park, Patterson, Sutton and Tecumseh Acres — from the Young Fives through fourth grade, are participating in the program, currently in its third year. Leader in Me uses the principles taught in Covey’s book, and re-written in a second version titled The 7 Habits for Happy Kids, to help educators teach young children. The program embraces the concept that goals can be attained when individuals align their behaviors with positive character traits and ethics. Signs of achieving and using the seven habits can be as simple as being helpful to others. “I have seen an increase in students taking responsibility, not just for their actions, but in learning. They are taking ownership,” said Sutton Elementary School principal Stacy Bailey. Teamwork drives The Leader in Me program with support by teachers and administrators, coordinators with Communities In Schools, bus drivers, lunch room staff and other support personnel who help identify students who exhibit characteristics taught in the book. In the book, the author outlines habits that help develop critical thinking skills and characteristics such as trust and trustworthiness, strong work ethic, motivation and initiative, problem-solving skills, goal setting, effective interpersonal skills and sense of teamwork. The titles of the seven habits are: Be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win-win; seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize and sharpen the saw.

Each school has a system of rewards and recognition for honoring students who are successfully demonstrating the lessons in The Leader in Me program. At Tecumseh Acres Elementary, staff actively takes part by passing out “caught-you-being-a-leader” slips to children using the lessons. Each classroom has a box where the slips are dropped into, and each month a student’s name is drawn with the winner receiving a Leader in Me T-shirt and recognition at assemblies held each month. First Student busing is participating by hanging signs in the buses displaying each of the seven habits. At Sutton Elementary, a hallway display board shows paper cut outs of the school buses that serve students, and each bus moves forward on the display toward a finish line. How fast each bus moves depends on the number of students riding that bus who demonstrate Leader in Me skills. Sutton also offers jobs to Leader in Me students that they can apply for, such as helping as a library assistant or an art room helper. In Jessie LaFountain’s art class, students were asked to take one quality from each of the Leader in Me habits that mean the most to them and write it on a decorated cutout of a person. The cutouts were assembled on a hallway display in a pyramid shape to show a solid structure with a strong base, much like a child who has adopted the positive qualities taught in the program. “Teachers like the program because it ties in seamlessly with what they’re doing each day,” said Bailey. Tecumseh Acres Principal Carl Lewandowski agrees that the Leader in Me program is working to help students succeed. “What I like is it focuses on those characteristics that all parents want their kids to have, like being a friend, being helpful and becoming a problem solver. All these things and more are in the program,” Lewandowski said.

Davie was a flier And I don’t mean in planes He could fly much higher Than the locals and mains Davie just spread out his arms and gave a bird like call Jumped off a cliff Then up he’d lift without any need to call He soared to great heights While breaking up fights Between birds and private jets People came from all around to see this remarkable kid Cause his face was on boxes cans and lids Davie was awesome, amazing, the bomb, the man, fantastic, super, so cool He flew up real high then dived into a pool The splash was tremendously large

We’re the two headed man And we eat raisin bran We’re always together I’m like a sister you’re like a brother I can’t visit your place you can’t visit mine We live together Cause I’m like a sister and you’re like a brother We’re the two headed man

stories from Mrs. Frank’s Class at TEcumseh Acres Elementary School Why Everybody should have a dog in their life By: Chloe Griewahn

Do you want to live a longer life? Well research shows that you live longer when you have a dog in your life than when you don’t That is why I believe you should have a dog in your life because rescue dogs help you. Dogs make your life even better, and it helps your lifespan & benefits. The first reason why you should get a dog is because rescue dogs help you for many different needs. Rescue dogs help blind people. Three dogs survived the Titanic sinking. Listen carefully to this supporting detail. A very important thing to remember when adopting a rescue dog is not to feel sorry for the dog. Not while you’re standing there in the pound and not after you bring it home. This would allow the dog to get away with bad behavior. The 2nd reason why I think everybody should have a dog in their life because they make your life even better. Here is one detail why I think dogs make your life even better. Humans with dogs recover more quickly from illnesses. Dog owners have a much higher rate of recovery from being sick than non-dog owners. In fact, people with pooches have suffered from heart attacks were twice as likely to fully recover than those without. Finally the last thing i’m going to talk about is how dogs can help you with their lifespan & health benefits. Here is one fact. Pooch owners tend to be healthier than an average person because they are more active with a dog. This is an amazing fact that dogs sniffing out your moles they can detect cancer. Here is one more fact about how dogs can help you with your health benefits & lifespan. Dogs can also detect low blood sugar. So a person with diabetes would benefit from a dog. To sum it all up other people should care about this topic because, Rescue dogs help you in many different ways and needs. Dogs can make your life even better, and pooches help your lifespan & health

benefits. So, if you want to live a longer, happier life, go get yourself a dog.

Girls On The Run By: Jana Hillegonds

In my opinion Girls on the run (G.O.T.R) is an excellent program for girls. The reason I think this is true is because you learn good things for the future, you can socialize and make new friends, and run around to get exercise. So, if you want to live a longer, happier life, go get yourself a dog. One of the reasons I named why G.O.T.R is a good program was because you learn about good things. One thing the coaches teach you is how to treat yourself. What that means is make healthy choices, exercise, and get enough sleep. Another thing they teach you is how to treat others, meaning care for their belongings, make them feel good about themselves, and encourage them. One of the last things that you learn in G.O.T.R is how to solve problems. That includes when you’re being bullied, when you’re feeling down in the dumps, and when you’re feel like you are stupid. The second reason I think G.O.T.R is a good program is because you can socialize and make new friends. You could meet kids from other grades because G.O.T.R includes 3rd and 4th graders and you could exercise with them. Also in G.O.T.R you can play games with your new friends because in G.O.T.R we always start off with a lesson and then go outside, do exercises, and play a game. In G.O.T.R you also can always meet people’s real personality and I sag that because sometimes when you meet new people in school you don’t see their real personality because they don’t feel comfortable to share it, but in G.O.T.R you can always express gaur feelings. The last reason I suggest G.O.T.R is so you can have fun running around and getting exercise with gaur friends because 1 out of every 3 kids is overweight. The first reason why I stand by my opinion in the beginning of a G.O.T.R practice you always set a goal of how many laps you want to complete and you can meet it alongside your friends. Also while you’re running you’re getting a good amount of exercise. The

second reason is you can express gaur feelings with your friends. You can tell them how you feel about certain things so they can help you feel better. The last reason why this is my opinion is because during practice you can cheer on and encourage your friends and at the end you can reward them with energy awards. Energy awards are when you stand in a circle and nominate someone that you thought did good and that day and then choose a goofy cheer to make them feel good about themselves. Now I hope you realize how great Girls on the run is. I hope you find that learning about things you need to know, socializing, and getting exercise is very good for you but it’s also good when they’re all in one program. Girls on the run is excellent for girls and both healthy and fun.

Farming Is The Best Job By: Bryce Frey

I think farming is the best job in the world. Farming is the best job because you can help people, you get to drive tractors and other vehicles. Last but not lest, farming is rewarding. Farming helps people by giving them meat to eat for protein they also grow fruits and vegetables to help keep us healthy. Finally, dairy helps our bones stay strong. Another reason farming is the best job is because you can drive tractors and other vehicles that pull trailers. Farmers can haul livestock in the livestock trailer. They put the crops in the field with a trailer called a seeder. The last trailer is called a baller. It makes bales for the cows to eat. Farming is rewarding because. You get to win ribbons at a fair from your whining animals. To start your own farm and get animals and vehicles. And to get a newborn cafe and get it’s milk. As you can see farming is helpful, you get to drive vehicles that pull trailers and farming is rewording now you know why I think farming is the best job in the world.

No homework!!!!!!!!!!!!! By: Kate Amerson

Many people don’t realize kids don’t need homework. I believes kids should not have homework ever. Without homework kids could get more exercise, spend more quality time at home, and have better focus. Read on to follow my opinion about why I think ids shouldn’t have homework. Exercise is an important thing, and you absolutely need it. Say you’re doing homework inside your house and your friend did all his or her work at school and you didn’t so he or she gets to play outside. He or she ask if you can play but you have homework so you say no. You and your friend are bummed out. In Japan, kids have 4 hours of exercise per day 1 in 5 4th graders spend more than 30 minutes on homework in the U.S. Homework could cause sleep disturbance and exercise eliminates sleep disturbance, so that’s why we need more homework. The second thing I want to talk is school and work. School should be for all the work, not home. When you get home and you have no break because your parents tell you do to the chores. Then you have to do homework work. You really don’t have time for anything. You could just do the work you didn’t finish the very next day of school. You should also not give them work for recess because your taking their break they have at school, and that is vital. Kids can’t focus on their homework. What I mean is you might have a younger siblings that are making you get off task. If you don’t’ have you having siblings and parents they could disturb you too. Also, parents can’t help you because of the ways schools are teaching that parents didn’t learn in school. You wouldn’t get help. Then you would get a bad grade. In conclusion, now you know why kids shouldn’t have homework because we can get more exercise, have more focus and do work at school. This is my opinion I think I’ll follow it. “No Homework. That Will Work.”
