NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM
2022 ANNUAL REPORT

Purpose is the reason you journey. Passion is the fire that lights the way.

// Unknown //

The successes of 2022 are a testament to the passion and spirit of this Museum, its team, and our dedicated community of supporters. We began the year still reeling from the residual impact of the pandemic and the tornadoes that hit our campus on December 11, 2021. Once again, this Museum was forced to drive ahead, damaged but determined, prepared to turn our misfortune into opportunity. And, as I look back at this year, I think it’s an understatement to say that we’ve simply weathered the storm. In 2022, we rode the lightning.

In our galleries, we started the year off with an exhibit that delighted hearts and made all of us feel like children again. I’ve never seen so many adults in one room playing with toy cars and grinning from ear to ear. It was refreshing. It was exciting. And, most importantly, it was educational. Visiting children were actually learning through play, and many left inspired and more curious about cars than ever before. In September, this Museum opened its most ambitious exhibit to date - a 6,500-squarefoot, state-of-the-art showcase that reflects the passion of our staff and the genius of those responsible for the design of the Corvette. Our curatorial team spent the better part of two years serving as historical archeologists, digging through thousands of documents, photos, videos, and recordings to tell the complete design story. It’s interactive, and it’s incredible. The finished product is breathtaking and exhilarating - just like the Corvette itself.

With tremendous support from our passionate members and donors, our preservation campaign was an overwhelming success. We made long-overdue upgrades to our storage and conservation environments, as well as overall museum security, thus taking us closer to the much sought-after American Alliance of Museums (AAM) accreditation. Because of our committed supporters, including a significant gift from the McMichael family, we will soon have a dedicated space to inspire school-aged children to dream of becoming engineers, designers, and even future Corvette owners. In short, your philanthropy allows us to do the important and necessary work that good museums do.

Every single day, I see this community’s passion. The Board and staff of this Museum astonish me with their resilience, creativity, and commitment. The genuine delight of Museum Members, donors, and Corvette enthusiasts drives us to deliver best-in-class exhibits and experiences. Our partners and supporters share our vision and help us deliver our mission beyond the walls of this building. All of these passions come together to propel our desire to push forward. According to 2022 Corvette Hall of Fame Member Ed Welburn, “Great cars only happen when you have great people.” Well, I can assure you, great museums only happen when you have great people - those who are enthusiastic about the work and unafraid of a challenge. If 2022 has taught me anything, it’s that passion is the fuel that powers the National Corvette Museum, and that whatever storm comes next doesn’t stand a chance.

Onward,

When You Love What You Do, You’re Driven.

Passion. Decades ago, it ignited a whole industry, then fueled a cultural revolution that has become a part of all our history. It provokes our imaginations and fills us with a sense of wonder, inspiring in us new ideas and directions. It stems from within, guiding our hearts and minds, making us care deeply. This is what passion does. And like Corvette designers, owners, and National Corvette Museum Members, passion is the joy behind what and why we do what we do every day.

Unquestionably, passion kicks our vision, focus, dedication, and perseverance into high gear. It goes far beyond what we do between the hours of 9 and 5. It is the spark that awakens us, fires our soul, and drives us forward. Our shared enthusiasm for this beloved American icon unites us. It lets us fly and doesn’t limit our dreams of what we can achieve. We know when we let passion take the wheel, magic can happen. And when passion is the driver, everyone wins.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the National Corvette Museum is to celebrate the Corvette’s invention and preserve the legendary automobile’s past, present, and future. The Museum will serve as an educational and research model for all to enjoy.

EXHIBITS

Art - Science - Motion

Long Term Gallery Exhibitions - The Design and Engineering Gallery transformed for our latest installation – Driven by Design. This engaging presentation tells the story of how Corvettes are conceived, developed, and produced.

Curated by Bob Bubnis, in partnership with Corvette Hall of Fame Member and design legend, Tom Peters, and with significant support from GM Design, this exhibit highlights Corvette’s Vice Presidents of Design from Harley Earl through Mike Simcoe and also reveals the lesser-known stories of those who were influential in creating America’s Sports Car. The technology in Driven by Design raised the bar for our Museum, incorporating interactive elements, resulting in a state-of-the-art presentation space.

Limited Engagement Exhibitions - Our Corvette Powered exhibit gave way to the very successful run of Hot Wheels™: Race to Win™. Offered in partnership with the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, this engaging and educational display was a huge draw for families and children of all ages. Replacing the popular Hot Wheels exhibit, we showcased 35 Years of Callaway, an exceptional selection of cars including the 200 mph Callaway Sledgehammer allowed us to celebrate Callaway’s impact on Corvette horsepower.

Behind every Corvette is a talented team, fueled by creative passion!

COLLECTIONS

We’re Expanding the Corvette Story with Your Help.

Our vehicle collection received three significant donations in 2022 - a beautiful 1985 C4 L98 donated by Mike & Vickie Whitworth; a 2011 ZRI donated by Larry Richards; and the exquisite 1963 split-window coupe donated by Emanuel M. Balale that graces the entrance to our newest exhibition, Driven by Design.

With a significant donation from Leslie Gardner & Dr. Ed Mattson that illustrates the legendary racing career of Dick

“Mr. Corvette” Guldstrand, along with a generous donation of racing ephemera from Mark Hooper, in memory of his father, Doug Hooper, our Corvette Racing collection continues to grow. We ended the year with an extensive toy collection and an impressive assortment of historical print advertisements donated by George Biederman. This Corvette-centric collection was gathered over the course of a lifetime and positions our Museum as the caretaker of what is likely the largest Corvette toy collection in the world.

PRESERVATION

Preserving Passion

Our preservation and restoration team began a car-by-car evaluation of the Museum’s growing vehicle collection. This process is essential to determine the best use of our treasures for outreach, education, and telling the stories of Corvette. The evaluation also allows us to better identify the necessary vehicles that would elevate our collection to the finest in the world.

The Museum also began the restoration of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s singular Corvette. The 1974, big-block Corvette’s braking system and additional mechanical elements are being returned to original condition and are slated for completion in 2023.

ANNUAL MUSEUM EVENTS

Celebrating Corvette Together

The 2022 Michelin NCM Bash featured one of the Corvette community’s first opportunities to see and hear the brand-new C8 Z06 in person. We hosted Jordan Lee, Global Chief Engineer of Small Block Engines, to discuss the development of the Z06 engine. Participants enjoy a glimpse into the Museum’s collection with “Artifact Pitstops”, including a peek at the original letter from Zora Arkus-Duntov, and a historical Z06 demonstration drive. During a special key ceremony, the Museum welcomed the donation of a 1963 Split-Window Corvette from Emanuel M. Balale currently featured in our Driven by Design exhibit. Tom Peters hosted a dinner & discussion with engineers and designers of Corvette providing a unique

perspective and exclusive view into the process of designing America’s Sports Car.

As part of the celebration leading up to the Corvette Hall of Fame Ceremony, the Museum hosted a Hall of Fame roundtable with Gary Pratt & Jim Miller, Ed Welburn, and Jerry Burton on behalf of Elfi Arkus-Duntov. Rounding out the weekend’s festivities, the Museum hosted a viewing of Boundless - Betty Skelton, a documentary showcasing Skelton’s countless career achievements. A roundtable discussion followed featuring the film’s Co-Executive Producer Cindy Sisson, Corvette Hall of Fame Member Jerry Burton, and Curator of Collections at the Lane Motor Museum Derek E. Moore.

MUSEUM IN MOTION

Bringing History to the Open Road

The Museum hosted seventeen Museum in Motion (MiM) events including several brand-new adventures, expanding the reach of the MiM program. Restarting the MiM Cruise program, folks joined us in the Caribbean for a 7-night, 8-day extravaganza that explored the Grand Cayman Islands, Curacao, and Aruba. Others traveled with us to New York City, traversing the Big Apple, participating in a wreath-laying

ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial along with hearing first hand accounts of this paralyzing day from retired FBI agents on the scene. Guests also enjoyed several of our annual Museum in Motion excursions including our yearly trip to Arizona and Utah for the National Parks

Tour along with our ever-popular Kentucky One Lap tours, this year exploring western Kentucky’s stunning Land Between the Lakes.

PLANT TOURS

The Place Where Passion Comes to Life

For the first time in five years, the Bowling Green Assembly Plant welcomed Corvette fans from around the world for plant tours. At the Museum’s 28th Anniversary Celebration, Bowling Green Assembly Plant Director, Kai Spande, was greeted with a round of applause when he announced plant tours were

ready to resume. Taking part in this experience gives Corvette owners and sports car enthusiasts the ability to marvel at the care and craftsmanship that goes into building America’s Sports Car. These plant tours, in partnership with GM, provide a significant financial benefit to our Museum.

Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.

A New Class of Legends Inducted

Since 1998, the Corvette Hall of Fame has recognized the most influential and important figures in the history of America’s Sports Car. This year, in a newly revamped ceremony, our guests were invited to the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC) to celebrate the induction of the 2022 Corvette Hall of Fame Class. Elfi Arkus-Duntov, the courageous and graceful woman lovingly known as the First Lady of Corvette, was

inducted in the Enthusiast category. Ed Welburn, the retired Vice President of GM Global Design and the man responsible for resurrecting the Stingray, was inducted in the GM category. In the Racing category, Gary Pratt and Jim Miller were inducted for their indelible impact and influence on Corvette Racing. The evening was both elegant and emotional - a fitting way to honor these passionate Inductees.

When You Fuel Inspiration in Others, You Can’t Help But Grow.

As custodians and curators of a uniquely American cultural tradition and heritage, we take museum business and operations very seriously. Our passion for the Corvette legacy drives the objectives, planning, goals and numbers we anticipate achieving each year. It helps us make purposeful decisions, giving us a sense of urgency and commitment in the diligent pursuit of our goals. Because our dedicated staff believes so deeply in what we’re doing, it’s easy to stay focused on enhancing our customer experience and increasing museum

attendance by creating unique experiences that excite, entertain, educate, and inspire. Passion is manifested in the creative ways our staff approaches their work and the ideas they generate that build our brand, raise awareness and promote excitement for the Museum. From the business and operations perspective, passion is behind all we’ve accomplished since opening our doors and certainly in what we’ve achieved this past year. It fuels our growth and sets the pace for where we’re headed down the road.

The continued drive to offer the best protection for these enthusiasts has propelled NCM Insurance to become one of the fastest growing collector vehicle agencies in the country. In the last 12 months, NCM Insurance has become the #1 collector vehicle insurance agency at our carrier, American Modern. In 2022, the NCM Motorsports Park forged ahead on the “Road to Recovery” plan. Despite the obstacles faced on the journey, our team never lost focus, making it the most profitable year in our history. In July, the National Corvette Museum announced plans for $2.4 million in improvements to the NCM Motorsports Park, and these improvements are well under way. Through the development of new products, renewed partnerships with outstanding supporters, the addition of fleet vehicles, and the expansion of existing programs, the organization experienced tremendous growth, positioning us for continued success in 2023.
