OUR MISSION The mission of the National Corvette Museum is to celebrate the Corvette’s invention and preserve the legendary automobile’s past, present, and future. The Museum will serve as an educational and research model for all to enjoy.

FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO As 2020 ended, we faced the harsh reality that 2021 would bring with it more of the same challenges. There would be more separation from our loved ones, co-workers, and friends; more FaceTime and Zoom meetings to keep any sense of connectivity between us; along with more masks and more social distancing to get in the way of our being, well, social. Our country would enter the new year holding on to hope, only to become more divided than ever before. While the pandemic itself divided us physically, the issue of how to deal with it separated us even further. Questions of whether to vaccinate or not to vaccinate, and if we should or should not wear a mask, mixed with conflicting data, charts, and personal stories of tragedy and loss, impacted us all on one level or another. It was all so confusing. It was all so exhausting. Then, on December 11, 2021, once again, a force of nature would strike Corvette Drive as multiple tornadoes raged through the Western Kentucky region. These twisters would shake the Bowling Green community, and by the end of it all, the Corvette campus would be in their wake. In those early morning hours however, the leadership of the NCM, MSP, and NCMI rose to the occasion. While there was shocking devastation, we were quick to understand that it could have been so much worse. Thankfully, our staff was safe, our collection was unharmed, and no guests were on site at the time this weather event occurred. With those blessings counted, the staff got to work, ready to serve the public, our membership, and our community. Through the challenges of the pandemic, the trials and tribulations of top leadership changes, a natural disaster and more, the institution was determined to keep going, growing, and adapting to whatever issues might confront us. Experiencing such a stressful event so early in my tenure, it became clear to me that while 2021 had been hard, exhausting, and even devastating at times to this team, the organization had grown together in ways that maybe only adversity can make possible. As we forge ahead in 2022 to rebuild, reimagine, and regain our momentum, this organization is primed and ready to work hard with our board, and engage deeply with our membership, eager for the adventures ahead of us. We look forward to our next chapter — as we continue to grow together.

Onward,

Sharon A. Brawner

SHARING CORVETTE’S STORIES 2021 E X H I B I T I O N S

Exhibitions are at the core of the National Corvette Museum, bringing the Corvette story to life for its guests. In the Limited Engagement Gallery, 2021 brought a close to the extended run of Cartoon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: The Art and Influence of Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth, which highlighted the influence Ed Roth had on automotive designers. This gallery then welcomed the exhibition Corvette Powered, focusing on the significance of Corvette’s small-block Chevrolet V8 engine and how it found its way into non-General Motors vehicles like Bizzarrini, Iso, Avanti II, and numerous others over time. In the Skydome, the Museum installed three spotlight exhibitions showcasing Corvette and music, modified Corvettes, and Corvette’s connection to Dale Earnhardt. Stars and Cars shared the stories of Roy Orbison’s 1967 Corvette and the recently acquired 1978 Corvette owned by George Jones. Corvette Reimagined examined how Corvettes are modified, either through passion or necessity, as presented in the Arrow Corvette built for quadriplegic race car driver Sam Schmidt. 24 at 20: Honoring Earnhardt, Corvette, and the Overall Win at Daytona looked back on the 20th Anniversary of Corvette Racing’s famed 1-2 finish and overall win at the 2001 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona with Dale Earnhardt in a Corvette.

EDUCATING A NEW GENERATION C O L L E C T I O N S P R E S E R V AT I O N I N T E R N S H I P Education is the primary goal of any museum, so when the opportunity arises to not only educate a younger generation of Corvette enthusiasts, but to also bring them into the Corvette Museum family, the institution welcomes it! In 2021, that opportunity came to the NCM through an internship program with McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas, and the support of Ivan Schrodt. Zach Bredfield, a student in the Automotive Restoration Program at McPherson College, was accepted as the first ever Collections Preservation Intern here at the NCM. Working alongside the Museum’s Preservation Technicians, Zach’s primary project was the preservation and reassembly of the 1979 Engineering Development Corvette. This is the Corvette that was also utilized to test 8

run the new assembly line at Bowling Green Assembly Plant before full production began in 1981. Zach’s passion for Corvette was passed down to him from his grandfather and father. During his time here, Zach was known for wearing a well-worn Corvette baseball cap which had been a gift to him as a young boy from his grandfather. Coincidentally, his grandfather purchased that hat at the Corvette Store during a visit to the NCM. The Museum extends its appreciation to McPherson College and Ivan Schrodt for making this program possible and looks forward to educating a new generation of Corvette enthusiasts. 9

NCMI continued to expand its customer base across all 50 states in 2021. So much so, that a new agent and customer service representative were hired. As we continue to grow, our customers remain our top priority as reflected by longtime customer Jeremy Welborn, “This agency is the best specialty and classic automobile agency in the country. Their staff is very attentive to their customer’s needs. I couldn’t be more satisfied with their policy offerings and service.”

OVERCOMING THE UNEXPECTED In the early morning hours of December 11, 2021, three tornados touched down in Warren County, Kentucky. Two seperate tornados hit the NCM Campus. One tornado, classified as an EF2, touched down and severely damaged the NCM Motorsports Park. A seperate tornado, classified as an EF-1, all but completely destroyed the Museum’s outdoor event space known as the Amphitheater. In our community’s time of need, you immediately began reaching out to ensure our personal safety and to inquire if the Museum and community needed any resources. Your thoughts were, and continue to be, very much appreciated. You are much more than just members, donors, and supporters to us. You are family. In the weeks following the devastating tornados, the National Corvette Museum, in partnership with Feed America First, helped distribute approximately 70 pounds of food items per household to an estimated one thousand families.

“No one’s life is a smooth sail; we all come into stormy weather. But it’s this adversity - and more specifically our resilience - that makes us strong and successful.”

SEA TO SHINING SEA MUSEUM IN MOTION EVENTS COVER THE COUNTRY

Last year, you joined the NCM for Museum in Motion events across the United States. It was enjoyable seeing several familiar faces as well as meeting new friends experiencing their first MiM excursion. Colorado Springs was a new addition to the Museum in Motion program for 2021, and it instantly earned repeat status. With stops such as the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum and Pikes Peak, it is not a trip you want to miss. In 2021, the Kentucky 1 Lap continued to be a fan favorite as 221 friends traveled across the state discovering all there is to love about the Commonwealth, including the Kentucky State Police Trooper Island.
