2023 Annual Report - CorpsAfrica

Page 1

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to share CorpsAfrica’s 2023 Annual Report.

Witnessing the dedication of the CorpsAfrica Volunteers alongside the unwavering support of our partners and communities has been truly inspiring. Together, we expanded our reach to serve in nine countries. This growth fosters deeper connections between our country programs, enriching our understanding of the communities we serve.

We believe that sustainable development thrives when communities take ownership. This year, we’ve strengthened partnerships with local organizations and community members at all levels. Their expertise has been invaluable, guiding interventions and maximizing the positive impact we can achieve together.

As we work to shift the paradigm to African-led development, we have been heartened by the success of our approach: investing in mindset change, and ensuring that youth and community members are placed at the center of solution design processes. This has yielded lifechanging results at critical moments.

This year presented unforeseen challenges that tested our resolve—including the earthquake in Morocco as well as Cyclone Freddy and a cholera outbreak in Malawi. Still, our courageous Volunteers responded swiftly, working side-by-side with communities on disaster relief to strengthen long-term resilience in critical areas like health, food security, and supporting marginalized groups.

We are deeply grateful to the dedicated Volunteers and alumni who make CorpsAfrica’s mission a reality. In recognition of their hard work and ambition, we’ve launched new programs that support their professional development, academic pursuits, and entrepreneurial endeavors.

It is projected that by 2035, there will be more young Africans entering the workforce on the continent than in the rest of the world combined, representing a powerful force for good. We are grateful for the opportunity to equip them with the tools they need to translate passion into action and inspire a ripple effect of positive change.

This journey wouldn’t be possible without our incredible partners, donors, and welcoming communities. Your belief in youth-led, locally-driven success across Africa means the world to us.

Thank you,

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Highlights from the Year: The Future of Africa is its Youth

This year marks significant growth and impact for CorpsAfrica. We expanded operations to Ethiopia, Uganda, and The Gambia thanks to partnerships with the Mastercard Foundation and The OCP Group.

Our existing programs in Morocco, Malawi, Senegal, and Rwanda thrived with strong support from staff and the communities we serve.

MEASURABLE RESULTS

A $59.4 million expansion of our partnership with the Mastercard Foundation is enabling 1,605 young Africans to serve as CorpsAfrica Volunteers across nine African countries. These dedicated Volunteers are projected to impact more than 802,500 community members and create more than 93,585 jobs over the next five years. We are deeply grateful for the Mastercard Foundation’s continued partnership, trust and support as we set forth a new development paradigm across Africa.

• Job Creation and Economic Growth: We directly created 7,677 new jobs, improved 10,766 existing jobs, and sustained 3,638 jobs through Volunteer initiatives.

• Strategic Partnerships: We secured critical funding from the Mastercard Foundation and OCP Foundation and forged a groundbreaking collaboration agreement with the Peace Corps for joint sustainable development initiatives.

• Convening to Amplify Impact: We hosted a successful UN General Assembly event, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss youth-led innovation for Africa’s renewal.

INVESTING IN THE NEXT GENERATION

• Record-Breaking Applicant Pool: A staggering 40% increase in applications for the 2023-2024 service year underscores the growing demand for youth-led development in Africa.

• Empowering Youth Leaders: We developed new programs for CorpsAfrica alumni, including an Entrepreneurship Incubator and Scholarship Match Fund, to equip them for future success.

2022–2023 BY THE NUMBERS

Our commitment to continuous learning and improvement ensures we remain responsive to local needs while fostering a Pan-African approach to sustainable development. With your continued partnership and support, we will train and inspire the next generation of African leaders to build a brighter future for their communities and their continent.

ABOUT CORPSAFRICA

Catalyzing Community-Driven Success

We envision an Africa where youth and rural communities collaborate to lead sustainable development and create a better future for all with a diverse network of NGOs, philanthropists, and governments.

COMMUNITY-LED DEVELOPMENT AT THE CORE

CorpsAfrica equips African youth to partner with rural communities to alleviate poverty, enhance livelihoods, and build resilience. Our approach is built on four core pillars:

• Community-Led Development: We believe communities hold the solutions to their own challenges. Our Volunteers partner with them to define and build their own sustainable future.

• Mutual Learning: Collaboration thrives on the sharing of knowledge and experiences. CorpsAfrica fosters continuous improvement through open communication and exchange.

• Transparency: Building trust and accountability is essential. We embrace open communication about successes and failures.

• Locals Helping Locals: A Pan-African Approach: Africa’s greatest asset is its youth. We train college graduates from across the continent to serve in their home countries and beyond, fostering a Pan-African network of changemakers.

BUILDING IMPACTFUL SOLUTIONS

CorpsAfrica prioritizes efficiency and impact. Volunteers leverage resources and community contributions to develop:

• Low-Cost, High-Impact Projects: Many interventions are self-sustaining or operate on minimal budgets, maximizing impact with limited resources.

• Scalable Solutions: We design projects that can be replicated and adapted across different communities, fostering widespread change.

HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN AND ASSET-BASED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

CorpsAfrica trains Volunteers in:

• Human-Centered Design (HCD): This approach places communities at the heart of the solution design process. Volunteers prioritize understanding community needs, behaviors, and experiences to co-create effective and sustainable solutions.

• Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD): Volunteers work with communities to identify and leverage their existing strengths, including physical resources, individual skills, and the power of collaboration.

EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE

A powerful earthquake struck Morocco’s Al Haouz province in the High Atlas Mountains on September 8, 2023, impacting a region where CorpsAfrica has operated since its founding. We delayed the deployment for the 2023–2024 cohort and swiftly created an intensive disaster response training program to equip incoming Volunteers with effective intervention skills, rebuilding best practices, emotional support techniques, and logistical information to best support affected communities.

Rehabilitation of ditches coming from natural springs to ensure sustainable water management and support Ait Chribou village’s local agriculture.

Recognizing the diverse impacts of disasters like this earthquake, our holistic training curriculum addressed physical and psychological needs, encompassing food security, economic recovery, and the wellbeing of women and girls. We are working to leverage the learnings from Morocco to strengthen crisis response across all CorpsAfrica programs.

Passionate about social change, CorpsAfrica/Maroc Volunteer Siham El Boukhari facilitated literacy classes, open mics, and skills workshops for Tilzat’s women and youth.
