Plymouth will have a glittering new look in the run up to Christmas. Tens of thousands of pounds have been spent on stunning new gold and white lights with snow falling effect features which will help transform the city centre into a winter wonderland. The big Christmas lights switch-on takes place on Thursday November 14 in the Piazza, featuring special guest and X-Factor winner Sam Bailey, plus other special guests. The event marks the start of a host of festive activities in Plymouth, including the return of the Winter Ice Rink from November 19 and a new Christmas craft and food market from November 26 until December 6. The popular Snow Globe will also be featured in Armada Gardens as well as Santa’s Grotto at Drake Circus and RumpusCosy on Derry’s Cross. It all adds up to a great festive offering and is sure to attract hundreds of thousands of shoppers to Plymouth and will be a positive boost for the local economy. There’s a full report on the Plymouth Loves Christmas campaign on the centre pages of this edition. This issue also carries our usual Women at Work features, including 26-year-old Abi Casey who has launched her own business handcrafting organic Fair Trade skin care products, and Tracey Brown, whose Funky Mamas cake making business is going from strength to strength. We also carry an interview with Kay O’Shaughnessy, who heads up Friends & Families of Special Children, a Plymouth charity which has helped hundreds of families who have children with additional needs. Add to that we have the latest on plans to restore the Palace Theatre to its former glory. Hope you enjoy this edition.

WOMEN AT WORK

Skincare business comes naturally to Abi Abi Casey is living her dream. After years of working for other people she has now launched her own business, handcrafting 100% natural, organic, Fair Trade skincare products that reflect her own love of nature. She’s called her business SheaSoul, as one of the base ingredients is Shea butter, which is mixed with coconut oil. A selection of essential oils is added to create a completely natural balm that’s free of chemicals, preservatives and water. Abi, 26, from Lipson, sources her Fair trade Shea butter and coconut oil from a woman’s co-operative in northern Ghana and all the money they make is reinvested into the co-operative. And her 50ml pots are made out of sustainable bamboo. After months of preparation, her first product has just gone onto her website – a facial balm with rose, jasmine and sandalwood. “It’s very exciting to see it all come together,” said Abi, who is currently running the business from her home in Lipson. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist so the process has taken a little while but I wanted to make sure that the product is absolutely right in terms of its benefits for the skin but also ethically and sustainably. I’m supporting a community in Ghana, which is great, and my products leave no shadow on the environment.” Setting up SheaSoul is a natural progression for Abi, who as a young girl would make mud cakes for her brothers and sisters: “I’d mix mud and petals and give it to them to use on their faces! I could only have been about seven-years-old.” In fact, Abi has been making her own balms for years because she found that skincare products on the market were not good for her skin: “I’m one of nine children in my family and some of us have suffered with skin problems and eczema,” she explained. “Chemicals and preservatives just make it worse and cause a reaction so I started to make balms using natural ingredients. That’s how it all started, really. “This is where my heart has always been but like most people I thought I’d better go out and get a job. But it wasn’t me. I’ve always felt that something else was calling me and I just love working with natural remedies. It’s something I can trust. When you think of it, there are entire cultures out there that have relied on nature and natural ingredients for centuries.” Abi added: “Shea butter is great for eczema and cracked skin

8\

The Plymouth Magazine November 2015

as long as it hasn’t been processed so that all the beneficial properties have been removed, and it also has an in-built, natural sunscreen. And coconut oil is excellent for skin, too.” So how did Abi find her formula? “Lots of experimenting! And it’s all literally hand-made so it’s a painstaking process. The Shea butter is very solid to start with and you mix it with the coconut oil to create a nice texture with little bubbles. Both are raw and unbleached and they combine well with essential oils. You have to get the quantities and the temperature right. I make them in small batches and let them cool and set before packaging. It’s so pure. I feel as though its nature doing the work, not me.” Abi says her biggest inspiration is her mum, Ruth, who has supported her throughout and has acted as a guinea pig through the experiments: “Her feedback has been very honest, which is what I needed. I wouldn’t be where I am now without her.” Abi is still working on completing her full product range, which will include balm for face, hands and body. She hopes to launch gift packs and believes the all-natural element of her products will appeal to parents of young children. The range will also include lightly-fragranced balms with essential oils: “And the beauty of a balm is that a little goes a long way.” Abi is initially selling her balms through her website and she is currently looking to retail them in small, independent shops. But her dream doesn’t end here: “I have a picture in my head of my own shop and behind me are all the herbs and natural ingredients. I want people to come in and feel like it’s a jungle with plants everywhere. They can choose which scent they want mixed in with the base ingredients and there’ll be experts there to help them make their own bespoke moisturisers. “Nature has been taken out of everything we buy. I want to put it back in. If there’s someone who shares my vision it would be great to team up and open the shop.” It’s been a full-on few months, but Abi says she’s having the time of her life: “I love what I’m doing! Before, when I was an employee, I felt trapped. Now I feel alive – and it’s great.”

ART MATTERS

Artist Peter’s generous gesture helps raise funds for local charity

Talented Plymouth artist Peter Blackler has helped raise a four figure sum for a city charity after donating a framed copy of his latest painting to the good cause. His painting of the iconic Duke of Cornwall Hotel raised £1000 at the Jeremiah’s Journey Ice Ball in October. He also donated another print which was sold for £375 during the silent auction. Peter spent 10 weeks painting the Duke of Cornwall Hotel from his Plymstock studio. The painting captures one of

Plymouth’s most historic buildings in all of its glory. Peter commented: “The unique architectural design of the building reflects a bygone era, and its presence depicts Plymouth’s history." The painting was purchased, aptly, by Jon Morcom, director of the Duke of Cornwall Hotel and will take pride of place at his Manadon Park home. Jon said: "I became aware of Peter's painting through social media and although I wasn't at the auction myself, I asked a friend to bid for me and it actually sold for the top price I had set.

"It's a magnificent artwork and I've now got to find the right place at home to hang it." The painting of the hotel is the latest in 'The Plymouth Series' which focuses on some of Plymouth’s most famous buildings and landmarks, including Elliott Terrace, the Palace Theatre, Devonport Bank and the Dingle’s Building on Royal Parade. Peter chose to donate a framed print to Jeremiah’s Journey after hearing of the charity’s work Duke of Cornwall director Jon Morcom with over bereaved with Peter’s painting of the hotel children and families in the Plymouth area. Peter's work is enjoying increasing demand, particularly after the publicity his 'Veteran Project 39 On' in which he spent seven years painting and reflecting upon the private stories and experiences of veterans from Dunkirk in 1940 and Burma in 1945. Most of the subjects of Peter’s 65 paintings were from Plymouth. A copy of Peter’s portraits of Plymouth veterans, Dennis Chapman and John Farrell are on display in the Ministry of Defence’s Whitehall headquarters, London. He has so far completed 20 works as part of the Plymouth Series, the Duke of Cornwall painting being the latest to be completed. It took him 10 weeks to complete the painting and he attracted many followers on social media as he posted regular reports on the progress of the work. His prints are displayed in Envy Hair Salons across the city, including the Royal William Yard and Peter has also recently launched a website where his work is available for viewing and purchase online at www.maherartworks.com Peter, 50, has been a full time artist for around 15 years. For the early part of his life he worked as an indentured carpenter and joiner, however an opportunity in 1997 presented a chance to study under the late Robert Lenkiewicz who taught him many of the colour and composition techniques evident in his style today. Peter spent more than two years being taught by Lenkiewicz on a one-to-one basis. "He was a hard taskmaster," said Peter, "but he taught me so much." Soon after finishing his time with Lenkiewicz he embarked on a career as a full-time painter and now works from a home studio in Plymstock, although he is about to move to a new home in Tamerton Foliot which will provide him with a bigger studio space. As an artist he works mainly with oil to allow the richness, tone and vibrancy of the colours to be focal within his art. Inspired by historical connections and pioneering frontiers he undertakes project work as well as life portraiture and private and public commissions. He is passionate about art and the way in which it can influence a person’s perception of life. Peter said that he produces between 10 and 12 originals each year which are then made available to the public as limited edition prints. Peter said: "I like large collections and I'm sure that the number of paintings in the Plymouth Series will at least double in the years ahead. I'm constantly looking at distinctive buildings and landmarks in the city which would make suitable subjects." As well as the Plymouth Series Peter is also working on a series of paintings based around Devonport Park which traces the story of a couple who first met in the Park. www.cornerstonevision.com

Friends & Families of Special Children was initially set up in 2002 as a support group by parents of disabled children who found that the help they needed just wasn’t available elsewhere. There was such an overwhelming response from parents and young carers that they successfully applied for charity status in 2006. It now helps some 650 families each year – quite an achievement for a charity which has just four professional staff but is boosted by a team of amazing volunteers. The charity, based at the Virginia House Centre in Palace Street, provides information, support and services – including leisure opportunities – to families living in or accessing statutory services in the Plymouth area. The driving force behind the group right from the start has been Kay O’Shaughnessy, who’s now chair of trustees at the charity: “I have a profoundly disabled daughter called Amy who’s 18 this December,” explained Kay. “When she was a young girl it Kay O’Shaughnessy was apparent that services for families with children with complex needs were few and far between so a few parents got together after meeting at physio sessions and decided to set up a group. “We’d visit each other’s houses and have coffee and share our experiences. We were basically supporting each other. And then more and more people wanted to join. The response from parents was amazing. They were all saying the same thing, that we were filling a huge gap and that the work was invaluable.” In order to carry on filling that gap, the group became a charity which meant it could tap into grants from BBC Children in Need and the Big Lottery Fund. Kay, who’d been using her own home as an office, met the trustees of the Virginia House Centre and secured the use of the building in 2009: “It had been empty for some time and needed a lot of work doing to it but it seemed like the ideal base as the building was gifted by Lady Astor for the benefit of the people of Plymouth. I think you can safely say we fit that remit.” Kay says that the breadth and depth of what the charity has to offer sets it apart from most organisations: “We are unique because we help every single member of the family, whether it’s individually or as a family.

special friend to Plymouth families “We launched our Fun and Freedom Club a few years ago for young siblings who often don’t get the same chance as others their age to get out and have some fun. That’s proved extremely popular. We also organise leisure opportunities for our disabled young people, and our A Team enables families with an autistic child to access safe spaces and environments. They can also come here for a coffee and a chat which is great for forging friendships.” There are also recreational activities which all members of the family can enjoy together. For parents, the charity has an extremely successful ‘Face 2 Face’ peer befriending scheme and an advice and advocacy service. The Face 2 Face scheme links a volunteer parent with another who is facing challenges. “A number of those who’ve been befriended in Face 2 Face have got such a lot out of the experience that they’ve trained to be volunteers as well,” said Kay. The charity offers advice to parents who want to learn what support is available from agencies and there is also an advocacy service for hearings such as tribunals and appeals: “Tapping into what help might be there and exploring all the avenues is really important because they’re not always signposted so people don’t know about them,” said Kay. Working alongside Kay are Face 2 Face co-ordinator Holly Steer, support worker Gill Parker and advice and information worker Grace Russell. Grace says the team is working hard to increase support for the charity from local businesses: “Being a small local charity, we don’t get the publicity that other charities enjoy,” she said. “But we’re providing a vital service for 650 local families a year. “We’d love more businesses to offer support. It doesn’t need to be financial; it can be the offer of days out, for example, or party venues. And some more young volunteers would be great – perhaps university students looking to get some experience and to widen their skills. We know that our young people love spending time with people their own age.” The charity has forged a positive relationship with statutory bodies such as education and health services but Kay said: “One of our strengths is that we are independent so we are flexible and adaptable. And because we have steering groups, it’s the families who take the lead so that we are needs-led.” Kay summed up just why the charity had made such a massive impact on so many people’s lives: “We’re very good at what we do and we know our families very well. People say they learn more from us than statutory organisations because we’ve been there, done that and got the t-shirt. Most of us have faced or do face the same challenges that they’re facing so we know. So they get empathy from us, not sympathy, and that’s an important difference.” As well as its accessibility, a major benefit of the building is that it’s spacious enough for a multi-sensory area and a meeting room, both of which can be booked. Visit the website for more information or give the team a call.

WOMEN AT WORK

New shop and bakery is the icing on the cake for Tracey! She’s made cupcakes for diving star Tom Daley and seen her wedding cakes featured on national TV and now Tracey Brown of Funky Mamas has capped a brilliant couple of years by opening a brand new shop and bakery. After four years working from a specially converted garage at home, Tracey threw open the doors of her Funky Mamas shop in Valley Road, Plympton, with a launch party on October 11. Tracey says she couldn’t believe her luck when she spotted the unit in Valley Road Business Park was available: “It’s perfect, just what we were looking for,” she said. “It was a blank canvas when we took over the lease in August so we could start from fresh which was what I wanted. It’s been great to be able to create the modern look that I had in my mind. It’s bright and colourful which is perfect for our branding. It’s also got frontage and offroad parking and it’s big so we can have the shop at the front and the bakery and workshop area behind.” Tracey’s signature cupcakes remain her biggest seller but the shop also has a selection of hot and cold food and drinks. Tracey also makes bespoke wedding and novelty cakes and one of her wedding cakes, which had an armed forces theme, was featured on BBC 1’s TV programme, Don’t Tell the Bride. “I’m really confident that we’ll be busy here,” she said. “The food that we’ll be doing will be locally sourced as much as possible. For example the pasties are from Cornwall, the free range eggs we use in our cakes are from Warleigh Barton Farm in Plymouth and our handmade milk shakes are made with ice cream from Langage Farm.” But it’s the cupcakes that still take pride of place. There are 12 different flavours to choose from, plus a

14\

Flavour of the Week. “The idea is that people can mix and match,” said Tracey. The 12 flavours are blackcurrant & apple crumble & custard, lemon meringue, carrot cake, chocolate overload, cherry bakewell, lime & coconut, strawberry cheesecake, choco mocha, classic vanilla, bubble gum, Flake 99, and sherbert lemon. So how did Tracey, who’d worked in the teaching profession before, end up running her own bakery business? “Well, I started making some cupcakes and cakes for family and friends and everyone kept telling me I should start a business,” she explained. “I’d always been good at art and found those skills easily transferred across to sugar-paste. My family and friends have been incredibly supportive and are really proud of me for what I’ve achieved so far. “I’m completely self-taught and that’s why I now teach other people – what took me six months to learn, I can teach to them in a couple of hours. It means they don’t have to go through that trial and error process.” Between November and Christmas Tracey is doing three workshops a week because so many people are wanting to learn cake-baking: “The workshops fill up really quickly,” she said. “Most people come along because they

want to learn how to make professional quality cakes. Others want to set up their own business and have gone on to do just that, which is great.” During the 3-hour workshops, people can learn all elements of cake decorating: “Everything is done in easy bite-size pieces so they can learn step-by-step. At the start, everyone is given an ingredient sheet and recipes for classic cakes. At the end, they’ll have made six bespoke, professional-looking cupcakes.” Tracey has all the required registrations from Plymouth City Council including a 5 rating for hygiene, and Funky Mamas is able to host cake decorating events such as children’s birthdays and hen parties. For Tracey, the new premises is just the start and she’s already planning for the future: “Within a year I’d like another shop and in a couple of years maybe we’ll have grown enough to have a central bakery where we make all our cakes to supply our shops.” In the meantime, Tracey will be taking on an apprentice and some part-time staff to join her Saturday staff, Milly Lee and Tiannon Cook. So, of all the cakes she makes, does she have a favourite one? “Oh yes, it has to be the blackcurrant and apple crumble with custard – apple sponge with blackcurrant conserve with custard buttercream and topped with butter crumble. It’s heaven!” The Funky Mama’s Facebook page which has over 10,000 ‘likes’ has up to date information on the latest flavours and workshops. Or visit the Funky Mamas website to book a workshop, get more information and browse the photo gallery.

FOOD MATTERS Martin and Maja of Samphire Bush

Stunning dishes and great service are a recipe for success at the Samphire Bush If seafood is your thing, then the Samphire Bush in Stonehouse is the place to go. In fact, if seafood ISN’T your thing, the Samphire Bush in Stonehouse is still the place to go. It says a lot about the success the restaurant has enjoyed in its first year that many diners have returned for more helpings – including people who said they’d never liked seafood before! The restaurant in Admiralty Street was opened in September last year by Hot Fruit De Mer experienced chef Martin Benjamin and his partner Maja Sinkiewicz, who heads the front of house team. Both say they’ve been “amazed” at the response they’ve received from customers: “It’s exceeded all our expectations,” said Martin. “We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved.” Maja gets to hear many of the compliments first hand: “The feedback we get from our customers is brilliant,” she said. “Quite a lot of people have said ‘I didn’t like fish before – but I do now,’ which is amazing. People also say ‘wow’ quite a lot! “Word of mouth has been very important in bringing in new customers,” she added, “and you don’t get that unless you’re doing something right.” They certainly are doing something right – there aren’t many restaurants that win Gold in the Taste of the West awards in their very first year. The Samphire Bush already has a huge following on social media, with almost 3,500 ‘likes’ for their Facebook page and glowing reviews on Tripadvisor which have rapidly made the restaurant one of the highest ranking in Plymouth. So what’s the secret to their success? The answer, says Martin, is actually quite straightforward: “It’s all about great produce, seasoning, flavour combinations and keeping it simple so that the star of each dish can shine.” This autumn, the “stars” include lobster, local scallops and sardines, crab, oysters, mussels, clams, hake, sole, monkfish and turbot. New to the menu and already a winner with diners is the Hot Fruit De Mer which has monkfish, John Dory, mussels, clams, crevettes, langoustines, scallops with creole sauce, crab gratin and home-made bread. At £29.50, it’s perfect to share. “We

had a Cold Fruit De Mer in the summer and we knew this would be very popular now that the seasons have changed,” said Maja. Another stunner that’s proving extremely popular is fillet of monkfish with potato & truffle puree; savoy, leek, sweetcorn and clam chowder and a smoked ham hock. “This is our biggest seller,” said Maja. “And you can see why – you can taste all the different elements in the dish and the fish is just perfect.” Martin’s own favourite is fillet of hake with champ potato, roast vine tomatoes and red pepper veloute. For Martin, cooking seafood is something he’s always done ever since growing up in the Atlantic island of St Helena. It was here that his love of seafood first started and he’d often help to catch the fish for dinner. Sourcing produce locally is important to Martin, who moved to the UK to train as a chef when he was 18. Much of the seafood at the restaurant is landed at Plymouth – although he only selects the best and freshest-looking fish: “I use what’s in season and what’s landed, so there’s only so much menu planning I can do. We keep everything as local as possible.” Although the star of the show at the Samphire Bush is likely to be sumptuous seafood, the menu also has delicious meat and vegetarian dishes such as pan roasted duck breast, cornfed chicken and butternut & goats cheese risotto. All the dishes are cooked to order which means Martin is able to adjust them to suit customers’ dietary needs or food sensitivities. It also means everything is as fresh as can be. And then there are the desserts, all made in-house by Martin, who enjoys experimenting with flavour combinations. Among those currently on the menu are rosemary panna cotta & roasted rhubarb; assiette of homemade sorbets; dark chocolate fondant with white chocolate sauce & pistachio ice cream; and vanilla crème brûlée with glazed Stonehouse figs. Or you could try 3-in-1, with a trio of desserts: vanilla crème brûlée with glazed Stonehouse figs; white & dark mint

chocolate ganache; and strawberry and coriander sorbet. If you’re wondering why the figs are called “Stonehouse” it’s because they’re from a fig tree in the restaurant’s garden! Mains are priced from £12.95 to £23 and there’s a set menu at £14 for two courses and £16 for three. There are wines to complement each dish – just ask Maja and her team for recommendations – and Maja has also shaken up some lovely cocktails that will get your evening off to a perfect start. Maja has trained the front of house staff herself and says they’re another big reason for the restaurant’s success: “They’ve always got a smile on their faces and they’re a big part of what we’re doing. We wanted to create a lovely relaxed ambience, somewhere people can come and really enjoy their evening and our staff are great for this.” Martin and Maja are now preparing for a busy Christmas. The restaurant is open throughout the festive period except for Christmas Day. There is a Christmas Party menu at £21.50 for two courses and £25 for three, with fish, vegetarian and meat options – including traditional roast with Devon turkey. So, after a fabulous first year, what are their hopes for 2016? “To build on what we’ve achieved so far,” said Martin. Maja agreed: “To carry on serving fabulous food that brings people back for more!” Evening opening hours are 6pm to 9pm (last food order) Tuesday to Saturday, and lunch is 12 to 2.15pm (last food order) Wednesday to Saturday. The restaurant has 40 covers and booking is advisable to avoid disappointment.

Sparkling with magic the festivities, which start on Thursday November 12, will be bigger and better than before as Plymouth City Council and Plymouth City Centre Company have invested in many new features. Brand new stunning gold and white lights with snow-falling effect features will be installed throughout the city centre and will be turned on at the yearly Christmas Lights Switchon event, taking place on the Piazza from 4pm on Thursday November 12. Sam Bailey, X-Factor winner from 2013 and Disney characters including the Ice Queen, Ice Prince, Cinderella, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Snow White will be this year’s special guests switching the lights on. Also making a special appearance will be local personality John Allin, aka ‘Birdman’. Another addition to the city will be the Nutcracker Trail which will see 20 8ft Nutcrackers placed in secret locations around the city centre. Children can pick up a trail booklet and follow the map to find the names of each Nutcracker and enter a competition to be in with a chance of winning one of 12 iPAD Mini’s that are up for grabs. Holly Reynolds, assistant City Centre Company manager, said: “We are very excited to be introducing the Nutcracker Trail as part of the Christmas fun in Plymouth this year. This creative trail is going to provide a fun, interactive activity for children to get involved with and we have 12 iPAD Mini’s to give away for those that post their trail cards back to Santa. “Adults and families can also have fun by taking pictures of themselves with the Nutcrackers and posting them on Facebook or Twitter using #FindtheNutcrackers.” The Plymouth Winter Ice Rink will be returning to the Piazza from November 19, under new management by Blue Martini, providing an authentic outdoor Christmas experience. A new Christmas Craft and Food Market will be a centrepiece in the city centre from Thursday November 26 until Sunday 6 December, making it easier to find the perfect gift for Christmas. Partnering with Miss Ivy Events and Taste of the West, a wide selection of independent businesses will be situated in log style cabins along Armada Way providing everything from traditional Christmas puddings to unique gift ideas . The log cabin style stalls will be decorated with highly visible Christmas lights and traditional garlands creating a magical festive experience that will attract visitors from all over the region. Peter Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “It may feel like Christmas has come early but the lights get switched on in November and there is so much going on in the city this year that we want to shout about it. “This year it’s all about ‘the new’ - new lights, new location for the switch-on event, new Christmas market, new Nutcracker Trail, new ice rink operators - it’s going to be amazing.” The popular giant Snow Globe will be returning to Armada Gardens where people can step inside and create their own Christmas scene. Children will also be able to visit Santa in his Grotto at Drake Circus or RumpusCosy on Derry’s Cross.

Bulgarian cellist Michael Petrov will perform Dvorak’s well-loved cello concerto at Plymouth Guildhall in December. This magnificent concerto was composed during Dvorak’s three-year stay in New York as director of the National Conservatory of Music. As with other works of this period it is thoroughly characteristic of Dvorak’s personal style and the Czech idiom he had embraced. It is stormy and brooding as well as rhapsodic and reflective. The concert opens with Verdi’s rousing Force of Destiny Overture. Within this often-played overture Verdi portrays in purely instrumental music the whole operatic drama of love, death and revenge. Another major work to be performed is Leonard Bernstein’s musical re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, composed in 1961 and includes two of the most popular songs from the musical; ‘Somewhere’ and ‘Maria’. The programme also features Rachmaninov’s enchanting Vocalise the last of his 14 Songs composed in 1915, which were originally written for voice and piano. The final work of the concert, Slaughter on 10th Avenue, was composed by Richard Rodgers

as a jazz ballet piece for a Broadway musical. The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is one of the longest-established orchestras in the country and the present conductor, Anne Kimber, is only the sixth conductor to have taken up the baton in 139 years. The orchestra attracts many distinguished soloists, with Ralph Kirshbaum, Guy Johnston, Tasmin Little, Joanna MacGregor and Jennifer Pike amongst the most recent performers to play with the orchestra.

The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra concert will be held on Wednesday December 2 at Plymouth Guildhall at 7.30pm. For ticket information visit www.plymouthsymphony.co.uk.

Bonfire Night plans are in place for Plymouth to host a family evening of fireworks, fun, entertainment and most of all…..a bonfire! Taking place on Thursday November 5 on Plymouth Hoe the evening celebrations will begin at 4pm when fairground rides and catering stands open. The presenters of Heart FM South West will keep visitors entertained with an exciting music programme from 6pm on the stage which will be located on the grassed area near the Royal Citadel. Located on the grass area by the Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse, timber provided by Babcock will create the bonfire which will brighten the dark skies and provide warmth for the evening. The bonfire will be lit at 7.30pm Creating a cosy atmosphere, visitors can gather around the fire with hot chocolate, tea, coffee and hot food that can be purchased from the many catering stands that will be available. Screenings at Plymouth Arts Centre Suffragette, being shown at Plymouth Arts Centre in November, is the first British film for which Parliament opened its doors as a location – highlighting the importance of the subject matter and the impact these brave women have on our lives today. Also being shown in November is a Dementia Friendly screening of the classic, Casablanca - part of the BFI’s Love Film season and perhaps the most romantic film of all time. During Plymouth Arts Centre’s Dementia Friendly film screenings, the house lights are turned down low and people are able to move about or talk during the films

if they need to do so. Free cups of tea and coffee are also available to ensure that both people with dementia and their families or carers enjoy this quality time together watching a film. The 61 seat cinema at Plymouth Arts Centre is cosy and intimate; drinks and snacks from the café/bar can also be enjoyed before, during or after the film. NHS in Crisis It can be hard to open a newspaper or magazine these days without seeing reams of articles on the ever growing concerns over the NHS. Care costs are being capped, hospital budgets reduced and 13 hospitals have been placed in ‘special measures’ because of their constant failings. Cambridge’s world-renowned Addenbrooke’s Hospital has just been added to the ever growing list of hospitals in special measures and BBC news reported only two years ago that this was considered one of the safest hospitals of the time. Sadly, we are not unfamiliar with the devastating effects that a lack of proper care can have for family, friends and loved ones. The financial impact that any illness or health problem can have can be enormous and often leave

families struggling to cope when in an already desperate situation. We are highly experienced in seeking compensation for the pain suffering and financial losses that people have faced because of medical negligence. With the government already having overhauled legal aid, Wolferstans recognise that those most needing help are being turned away by the government. We can offer Conditional Fee Agreements (“no win, no fee”) and the reassurance that your claim will be handled by a genuine specialist. Wolferstans have been Medical Negligence Specialists for over 30 years and have a dedicated team of expert, independently accredited, medical negligence lawyers, on hand to investigate any potential claim. It's been a momentous few weeks for Graham Stirling. First he stepped down from the board at Plymouth Albion after 10 years and then he stepped up to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Business from the University of Plymouth. Graham was managing director of Plymouth-based global manufacturing business, the Barden Corporation for more than 25 years before retiring five years ago. When he retired in 2010 the business had become a world leader for design and manufacture of super precision ball bearings, produced using advanced technology to the highest standards and used in every sector of industry from Formula One racing to medical and aerospace applications. Graham said that he was 'astonished and delighted' when he was informed that the university planned to confer the honour on him. Graham told the audience of graduates, families and university staff at the degree ceremony: "I had the privilege of running the Barden Corporation for 28 years. It was a tough and demanding business, but I often said I had the best job in the world. I loved it and every night I slept like a baby - often in an aeroplane! "We weren't without our problems and challenges: we had plenty of them daily. A successful business must have a good team of people all pulling in the same direction. You can agree to disagree but at the end of the day you all need to be on the same page. "My foundations throughout my working life have been honesty and integrity. For me these are the hallmarks of doing any business. Have respect for one another. In everything you do, 'do good' and make Graham Stirling at Plymouth Albion your boss 'look good.' That will pay massive dividends. "Do not be driven by money. I have never asked for a salary rise in my life. Do the best you can every day and success will come. You will be recognised, I can guarantee it."

The latest honour follows his appointment as a CBE in 2001 for services to education and training and reflects the fact that he has become a pivotal member of the Plymouth business community, chairing numerous organisations, charities and key sporting clubs. He is a patron of the Shekinah Mission charity, a board member of Plymouth Community Homes Graham Stirling receives his Honorary Doctorate in Business and chairman of its Manufacturing Services operation. He is also a board member of the Plymouth Area Business Council and is also a trustee of the University of Plymouth Students Union. He was a member of the board of Plymouth Albion for 10 years - nine of them as chairman and he was at the helm during some of the most difficult times for the club. He was instrumental in leading the fight to save the club and played a key role in ensuring it avoided going into administration. Graham stepped down as chairman earlier this year, handing over the baton to local businessman Peter Vosper. New investors in the club asked him to remain on the board for six months - and Graham did precisely that, resigning from the board in September. He remains a passionate supporter of Albion and has pledged to do all he can to help see the club return to the Championship. "Albion has an excellent new board ably led by Peter Vosper and while results so far this season could have been better, the adventurous style of play is attracting the crowds again. "Success seems to be coming the way of Plymouth Argyle and it would be great to see the same happening at Albion. Both clubs are important to the economy and standing of the city," he added. www.cornerstonevision.com

HEALTH MATTERS

Best foot forward at City Centre Chiropody

Four years ago experienced podiatrist Karen Scowcroft and her husband Andrew launched City Centre Chiropody in Royal Parade - and the business has gone from strength to strength ever since. Today City Centre Chiropody is the largest clinic of its kind in Plymouth with the most experienced team. Ideally located with excellent access to public transport and local car parks, City Centre Chiropody is attracting growing numbers of new and regular clients. The clinic has four qualified podiatrists, including Karen who has a degree in podiatric medicine and is also Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered. She is also a member of the Society of Podiatrists and Chiropodists. Earlier this year the highly experienced podiatry team was joined by qualified beautician Lucy Maden enabling City Centre Chiropody to offer medical pedicures for the first time. Karen explained: “We can now offer the ultimate in foot luxury carried out by a professional podiatrist and beauty therapist. Nails are cut and filed, cuticles prepared, hard skin, cracked heels and corns are reduced before the client’s feet are soaked in a luxury foot bath and gently exfoliated. “This is then followed by a massage of the lower legs and feet with the treatment ending with an application of Dr Remedy natural nail polish. We like to think it’s the ultimate in foot pampering.” Karen said that the introduction of beauty treatment has provided the perfect addition to the range of services at City Centre Chiropody. “We recognised that many of our clients wanted something more than routine podiatry treatment, such as foot massage and nail polish application, so it was brilliant when Lucy Maden joined us earlier this year.” Lucy not only offers a range of foot pampering options, but also other treatments such as facials, massage, eye treatments and waxing. Speaking about the podiatry services offered by City Centre Chiropody, Karen said: “Your feet are probably the last part of your body you think about - until they start hurting. It is estimated that more than two thirds of people in the UK will suffer from foot pain during their lifetime. “The problems that can affect your feet are numerous. They include corns, calluses, cracked heels, fungal infections, ingrown toe nails, hardened toenails, veruccas

46\

The Plymouth Magazine November 2015

and fallen arches - all of which can cause discomfort and reduced mobility. “Caring for your feet is important for all ages, but particularly the elderly and people suffering from diabetes or impaired circulation.” Karen pointed out that there is increased pressure on NHS footcare, not only because of the current economic climate, but also the challenges caused by the needs of our ageing population. Eligibility criteria for NHS footcare has become an issue and only those with the greatest need are likely to receive regular treatment. There are often long waiting lists for routine, non-urgent treatment. She added: “My husband Andrew and I launched Foot Solutions at 34 Royal Parade in 2009 to provide professional foot health advice along with orthotics and footwear products. “Two years later we established City Centre Chiropody on the first floor above Foot Solutions, because we could see that there was a growing need to provide one-off treatments, routine maintenance and long term footcare for patients. “We invested £50,000 in a state-of-the-art clinic and now have a team of qualified podiatrists all of whom have extensive experience working both for the NHS and in private practice. “We offer a very personal service as we feel it is important that we get to know our patients well. “We’re delighted that this personal approach has been particularly well-received and we have a growing list of regular patients.

Dr Ruth Harker on treatment of unsightly skin problems Unsightly skin problems such as moles, skin tags and blemishes can seriously affect a person’s self-confidence. But TV programmes such as Embarrassing Bodies have helped to bring such situations into the spotlight and encouraged more people to seek treatment. That’s the view of Dr Ruth Harker who has developed a

special expertise and experience in dermatology over the last 13 years. She qualified from Bristol Medical School 35 years ago, works as a GP in Plymstock and has been a hospital practitioner in dermatology for more than 10 years. She is a Board member of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine, which was formed in 2000 to provide a professional body for the growing number of doctors offering cosmetic

dermatology procedures. She is also a member of the Primary Care Dermatology Society. She launched the Erme Clinic in 2007 and last year moved to state-of-the-art premises in Ivybridge, working together with Highland 7 Day Dental Care. She also operates clinics in Plymouth and Totnes. Dr Harker offers many skin treatments and minor operations at the Erme Clinic and for the last nine years has offered nonpermanent fillers. She said: "As we age, unfortunately, the tissues particularly in the lower face, lose volume and start to droop. Fillers can help turn back the clock a few years." Dr Harker uses the best quality synthetic fillers which mimic the body's natural connective tissue components. They are not derived from animals and are not permanent. She said: "They may may last up to two years at most, although the softer fillers, used in the lips for example, will only last a few months." Dr Harker never has and never will perform permanent fillers due to the added risk and irreversibility factor. To avoid discomfort, numbing gel is used or patients can choose to have a numbing injection, similar to a dental injection. "The results are immediate and often patients say they are life changing," she added. Othetr treatments offered include wrinkle relaxing injections, removal of cosmetic moles, skin tags and warts, blemishes and age spots. Peels, DiamondTone skin resurfacing, Dermaroller and treatments for spider veins are also offered. Dr Harker now also has powerful equipment for radiofrequency skin tightening. She said that cosmetic surgical operations are not generally available under the NHS, while non-surgical cosmetic treatments are not provided by the NHS at all. “The treatments we provide are worthwhile as the improved facial appearance restores self -confidence and actually makes patients feel better about themselves,” she added. “Many people feel uncomfortable because of these conditions or can never wear a low neckline or go sleeveless due to skin tags or

warty moles. Some people also just want to turn the clock back a few years!” Dr Harker is assisted by fully trained nurses who are experienced in theatre and dermatology. Each patient’s particular problem and their general health is individually assessed before a treatment is recommended or undertaken. “We strive to make all treatments as pleasant and comfortable as possible. The radio-frequency treatment we use is superb at tightening the skin around the jaw line, cheeks, neck and around the eyes. Whether plumping up lips or softening expression lines, our aim is always perfection.” Dr Harker uses trusted market-leading products such as Restylane, which incorporates local anaesthetic, always aiming for a tasteful, subtle, natural look. “If skin is greasy, open-pored or prone to acne a course of Peels carefully tailored to the individual can help the skin become radiant and fresh. Alternatively DiamondTone skin resurfacing may be suitable.”

TRAVEL MATTERS

A First Class experience!

Have you ever wondered what the experience would be flying first class on a long haul flight? This month I am very grateful to one of my clients, Denis from Mannamead who has written about his experience flying first class on Emirates Airlines new A380 aircraft. It’s a fantastic insight into luxury travel and to what you can expect if you turn left rather than right when you enter your aircraft, maybe even taking a shower! David writes: "Earlier this year I was invited to visit relatives in Australia. In the age of 'bucket lists' I confess to not having many. However, I have always wanted to travel first class on a long haul international flight, and see what is beyond the dividing curtains. This year the opportunity arrived and I decided that on my journey I would travel first class in four sectors - UK to Dubai and then on Singapore., with the same stops on the return. To achieve this I decided to fly with Emirates. The choice had nothing to do with football, more to do with service and flights on offer, and the prices they charge. It was a good choice, the total experience was remarkably special. My journey started by driving to Farnham Common in Buckinghamshire to stay overnight with friends who allowed me to leave my car on their driveway for the duration of my holiday. Emirates provide a chauffeur driven limousine service up to 70 miles from the airport. On the morning of departure it was starting to snow. This did not hinder my chauffeur who arrived in a large Mercedes to collect me five minutes early. An effortless and comfortable drive to Gatwick followed, with bottled water and daily papers provided in the car. On arrival at Gatwick my driver found a porter to help with my luggage. As opposed to economy, my baggage allowance was two suitcases with a combined allowed weight of 50 kilos. This helped as I packed 9.5 kilos of tea bags having been asked by friends in Australia to take them as many Tesco tea bags as I could. I felt a bit like the Cutty Sark in reverse. To arrive at check-in and be the only passenger at the dedicated desk was a change from the snaking queue in the pens endured in the past. Also a first was the priority line for security checks and baggage inspection. The duty free and refreshment areas even in the early morning were crowded. The difference came as I entered the Emirates first class lounge. Spacious, comfortable and quiet, with a

selection of international newspapers and magazines, plus the outstanding rest rooms with shower facilities. There was a superb array of food available on a self-service basis. In addition to a varied selection of breakfast cereals and dishes both hot and cold it was possible to choose from salads and light luncheon meals. Also on offer was a wide selection of soft drinks, water, plus wines, spirits and champagne if required. All this made my normal breakfast porridge seem very ordinary. Boarding the aircraft was again simple, advised by lounge staff it was unhurried and the welcome on board warm and friendly. My seat, or rather private cabin was pre booked, and I was swiftly settled in. After inspecting the surroundings, I tested my armchair which in addition to normal seating positions was also adjustable to recline and then go to flat bed mode. This provided a six foot bed for sleeping with full size pillows, a duvet and blanket as well as a pair of comfortable slippers. My personal TV was about the same size as in my sitting room at home, with the added bonus of a touch screen tablet to control its many functions. A mini bar elevated from the veneered side of the cabin at the touch of a button. The window shades were also electrically operated, as were the sliding doors to the cabin affording privacy if required. Having been offered refreshments prior to take off, the stewardess then provided me with a menu and wine list. She explained that there was no set meal time, but I could order anything I wanted at any time. Overall the dining experience was exceptional. White linen table cloth and napkins, Royal Doulton china, stainless steel cutlery, real glasses and vintage wines. The offered had variety and was presented perfectly. All the food was excellent, from the Iranian caviar through to the chocolate melt pudding. On arrival at Dubai International I was astonished at the size of the Emirates Lounge - at least the size of Home Park! It included rest rooms with showers a bar, several sitting areas with comfortable arm chairs, fine flower arrangements, and a large waiter service restaurant. In the restaurant, even though the menu was extensive, I only wanted a pot of tea and the waiter asked me what I would like to eat that

was not listed. My request for a fillet of grilled salmon and crisp broccoli florets was delivered in less than 10 minutes, delicious. On arrival at Singapore another Mercedes limousine was provided. This took me directly to my chosen hotel for a stopover on my outward journey. I stayed at the Amara Hotel on Tanjong Paga Road. It is an international hotel and caters for a wide range of clients. Facilities provided are what you would expected in a large four star hotel: comfortable kingsize beds, excellent ensuites, good in house restaurant and leisure facilities. On my return journey I selected a smaller boutique hotel. Compared to the 300 hundred plus rooms of many in Singapore the Wangz Hotel had only 41. Situated on Outram Road it is both unusual and special. The ground floor restaurant provides an outstanding breakfast (included in room price) to start your day. A good a varied menu is available for all main meals. This will be my hotel of choice on any future stopover. My return from Singapore to Gatwick provided the same standards as before, starting and finishing with the chauffeured limousine. I must make mention of a wonderful extra available on Emirates A380 aircraft - in first class you have the ability to take a shower. The shower room was large with an easy to operate shower of decent size. Amenities provided including fluffy white towels of all sizes and a wide selection of toiletries. Whether you need it or not, it is quite special to shower six miles high. The whole experience was memorable and truly was first class. I found booking through my local independent travel agent a real bonus as visas and all the administration was done for me - all I needed to do was sit back and relax. Palace Theatre restoration is worth making a song and dance about!

The chief executive of the charity behind the renovation of the historic Palace Theatre has been talking to Plymouth Magazine about her vision for the Grade II* listed building. Heather Hunter of GO! (Great Opportunities) Together gave us a tour of Union Street’s grand old lady following the successful ‘Let There Be Light’ Crowdfunding Appeal which raised £1,878 more than the £15,000 target. It means that essential electrical and safety works can go ahead in time for a special Christmas concert featuring a community choir and orchestra, scheduled for December 14. The charity has purchased a 35-year lease on the Victorian music hall and adjoining Great Western Hotel. The Palace is listed as the second most 'at risk' theatre in the UK by the Theatre's Trust and Heather believes that it would have been beyond repair if action hadn’t been taken now: “We got here just in the nick of time,” she said. “Any longer and it probably would have fallen down.” Even in its state of disrepair, the Palace Theatre stands tall and majestic, dominating that part of Union Street; just imagine what it will look like after the renovation: “I do imagine it, all the time!” said Heather. “You only have to walk in through the front doors, up the stairs and into the auditorium to get a picture of how it could be.” The Palace Theatre of Varieties, as it was called, and the Great Western Hotel were built for the Livermore Brothers in 1898 by designers, architects and constructors, Wimperis & Arber. Built to lavish specifications and with a nautical theme, it was described at the time as one of the finest music and variety halls in Europe. With its domed ceiling, cantilever circle, beautiful box seats and intricate detail, it was a stunning example of Victorian style. But just three months after it opened, a fire – possibly sparked by the firing of a stage cannon during a sketch about the Battle of Trafalgar – destroyed the auditorium and stage.

The fire didn’t take hold until the early hours and was spotted by a passing policeman who raised the alarm and prevented even more damage. The Palace was restored and re-opened in 1899 but had lost some of its most intricate features. The venue has been used as a music and variety hall for most of its 117 years and has played host to some of the biggest stars of all time, including Lillie Langtry, Houdini, Charlie Chaplin and Louis Armstrong. Laurel and Hardy were booked to appear in 1954 and a programme was printed, but the show was cancelled at the last minute when Oliver Hardy was taken ill. “The Palace was the second biggest dedicated concert hall in the UK outside of London and everyone came here,” said Heather. The Palace has also been used as a bingo hall and, most recently, as the Dance Academy nightclub owned by businessman Manoucehr Bahmanzadeh. It was closed down in 2006 and the building was left to become derelict with water pouring in, buddleia growing out through the roof and windows, and thousands of pigeons taking up residence inside. Enter Heather, stage left. Heather and her family moved to Plymouth when she was 11 and she went to Devonport High School for Girls. Her parents still live in the city and it was while visiting them in February last year that Heather had the idea of restoring the Palace: “I took my son Matthew to the last ever panto at the theatre in the early 80s and I’d never

Tree-mendous selection of festive firs to choose from Well here we are again - it’s time to start thinking about what type of Christmas tree to buy this year. They’ll be here by the last week of November! We still get a lot of people coming to us each year who are new to real Christmas trees and can find the whole process of choosing a tree and stand a little overwhelming. They are never sure which type of tree to go for, or what stand is best. Our staff will always be on hand to advise you on what we think best suits your need We stock three types of Christmas trees, each of which look and feel different. The first is Nordmann Fir - the most popular. This is a gorgeous tree, with deep green, long, waxy needles which are soft to the touch and densely packed on the branches. Nordmann Firs are wide bushy trees that form the typical Christmas tree, triangle shape. They have branches that are strong and sturdy, making them ideal for heavy decorations and will support your lights with ease. They are also the best for holding on to their needles. The most popular size is the 1.8m (6ft) tree, but these sell out quickly, so either order in advance and we will choose a great looking tree for you or come down early before they sell out. Our next needle retaining tree is the Fraser Fir. These are still a relatively new tree to be offered, but they are gaining in popularity. These are known as slim line trees, having a narrower shape than traditional trees, but still retain that iconic conical shape. They are great for those where space is limited, or perhaps want a more modern, contemporary Christmas tree. The needles have a bluey, green colour, with an almost silver sheen to them. They are slightly stiffer than Nordmann Fir needles, but are not prickly. They also have an extremely pleasant scent that will waft throughout your home. The branches tend to be full and dense, giving the tree a full appearance. The last type of tree we stock is the traditional Norway Spruce. This is the good old fashioned tree that people have been decorating for years. It has the classical conical shape and the delicious pine scent we all associate with Christmas. It has stood the test of time and many of our customer will not choose anything else. It’s a beautiful tree, but shed its

However it is a great tree to use in a cool room and being less expensive than low needle drop trees they are very good value for money. The needles are fine and narrow, and cover the branches and arms. These are very bushy, full trees. Wear gloves when decorating. To take care of your tree, we recommend that you cut an inch off the bottom of the trunk, so that you create a fresh wound for it to Fiona Newton on the trail of drink from. The base can the perfect Christmas trees form a seal from the initial cutting that will prevent it from taking up water. Think of your Christmas tree as a giant cut flower, so you need to remove a small section of the base and give it plenty of water to drink. Christmas trees can drink anywhere from ½ pint to a pint of water a day, so make sure it’s topped up regularly. We can trim the bottom of the stump for you in the garden centre if you don’t feel confident enough to do it at home. Once you get your tree home, soak it in a bucket of water outside or somewhere cool for a few hours if you can. This will just guarantee that your tree will be as fresh as it can be for decorating. If it is possible try to bring your Christmas tree stand with you, as this will allows to find you a tree that will fit the stand. You wouldn’t believe how many people choose a tree with a stump that is three times wider than their stand. If you need a new stand or are starting from scratch, we are happy to help you decide which stand is right for you. If you have a stand which requires the base tree to be drilled, we can also do that for you in store at the garden centre. We will also have a wide range of pot grown Christmas trees in stock, for those who do not want a cut Christmas tree. They are available in varying sizes and variety, from 60-150cm (2ft -5ft). The varieties are Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Nordmann Fir, Korean Fir and Omorika Spruce. They have been grown in their pots and come with a complete root

system, so will last for years. When you get your potted tree home, we recommend that you plant it in a larger pot with a drainage hole in the bottom. If you are worried about soiling you carpets and flooring, you can always stand the pot in a saucer. Plant the tree in John Innes No.3 Compost and feed with an ericaceous fed. They like their soil slightly acidic, but not completely. Keep them well watered and if you bring them indoors for Christmas, try and keep them away from sources of heat. This dries out their needles and causes them to drop, also make sure that the compost is moist, but not water logged when kept inside. After Christmas, place the tree back outside and feed it throughout the spring and summer. They like to be in full sun, so give them as much sun as possible and don’t allow them to dry out. Repot in the spring every year if you wish to keep bringing it in every Christmas or plant it out directly in the garden, where it will grow into a beautiful tree All our trees, both cut and potted are British grown and are as fresh as can be. We don’t buy in any foreign trees and pride ourselves on having quality grown British Christmas trees. In fact many are local, and are hand selected by us to have the best shape and quality for our customers. These pictures are of Fiona on a recent trip to Scotland – where we have a good relationship with the smaller growers and can really select the best for our customers. Fiona is super fussy when it comes to trees and she takes it much more seriously than most buyers, even the growers tell us that! This year she started in Inverness, went on to Dundee and then finally found the trees she wanted near Glasgow! The plantation in Inverness had seven million trees in the ground so plenty to choose from but this year the grower in Glasgow was the one for us. We just hope he has enough as we know he will be in popular demand! So it’s beautiful weather now, but we can guarantee the rain will come mid-November when the trees arrive! We always love this time of year and look forward to helping you choose your trees. Happy tree hunting!
