Tell us something we don’t know!

We’ve been saying it for years and now The Times and a popular national magazine have come to the same conclusion - Plymouth is one of the coolest places in Britain. In one of its recent City Guides GQ Magazine encouraged readers to ‘discover Britain’s coolest little city by the sea.’ And this recommendation was echoed by The Times last month. GQ, recognised as an important voice on fashion and lifestyle commented: ‘With the dramatic scenery of Dartmoor on one side, and the cool sweep of the sea on the other, Plymouth has always had to fight hard to be noticed; its precarious position on Devon and Cornwall’s borders also meaning that, for some years, it somewhat fell between the county cracks. But, to overlook this marine city would be to miss out on its rare charm and bubbling cultural scene, which, given upcoming multimillion pound investments, is only set to increase.’ We couldn’t agree more. Plymouth certainly has a lot to offer residents and visitors alike and the huge developments coming up over the next five years will only add to its appeal. Not to mention the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020 However, like any other city, Plymouth faces its challenges. Austerity has led to massive cuts over the last three years which has put pressure on services. The move to fortnightly refuse collections, proposed closure of libraries and other measures will definitely impact on Plymouth’s residents. And the lack of career opportunities for some of the city’s brightest and most talented young people often forces them to move away to find the right jobs. And it’s difficult for young people to afford to buy their first home. It’s to be hoped that the City Council and bodies such as the Plymouth Growth Board will continue to address these issues. £10 million boost for Waterfront

More than £10 million will be invested in Plymouth's Waterfront after businesses voted in favour to continuing the Waterfront Business Improvement District (BID). More than two thirds of businesses eligible to vote in the ballot backed the BID to continue to drive investment in the Waterfront and give local businesses a greater say in the way the Waterfront is marketed and managed. The vote gives the go-ahead for Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP) to set up the renewed Waterfront BID2 and to work with Plymouth City Council and other partners in taking forward the Waterfront Business Plan, which will target £10.4 million of investment in the Waterfront BID area over the next five years. The BID comes into effect at the beginning of April and runs until the end of March 2022. Chris Arscott, Chairman of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, said: “This is a strong vote of confidence in Plymouth’s Waterfront from the businesses who trade here and who clearly recognise the potential for a more successful and profitable future going forward under a renewed Business Improvement District. “Our focus now is very clearly on putting all the arrangements in place for the start of Waterfront BID2 and on delivering the next Waterfront Business Plan, which businesses have helped design.” Ian Bowyer, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “Businesses have taken a very positive decision in voting for a second Waterfront BID. We welcome their commitment to vote yes for the BID and to continue to take a greater role in investing in and managing the future of the Waterfront, which is such an important asset for the City with the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020 fast approaching this was an important decision. “The City Council is entirely committed to supporting

the Waterfront and the visitor economy and through the Waterfront BID we have the opportunity to empower businesses. It is a significant part of the council’s wider strategy to support growth in the city economy and create jobs and wealth; the objectives of the BID’s second business plan align entirely with those of the council. The 'yes' vote represented 86 per cent majority of the total rateable value of businesses which voted in the ballot. A majority in terms of votes cast and rateable value is required to meet the ‘dual-lock’ mechanism for a BID to be legally voted through. Sarah Gibson, Waterfront manager and chief executive of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership said: “We want to thank all those Waterfront businesses that voted yes to continue the Waterfront BID for a further five years and continue their investment toward the preparations for Mayflower 400 in 2020. “And we want to reassure those that voted no to the BID, we want to work with them, to shape delivery of the Waterfront Business Plan to benefit the majority and not the few, to promote connectivity across the Waterfront and with the City Centre. “Waterfront BID2 is extremely ambitious; it will take us all working together to deliver it to make the difference needed. We will ensure a seamless transition between BID1 and BID2 but step up the pace to get the Waterfront ready for 2020. We will also continue to ensure the council’s services are ring-fenced and additional new funds are targeted for the Waterfront. “Top of the agenda will be our work with partners to improve pedestrian and transport links with new boulevards and trails ahead of Mayflower 400, to help visitors make the most of the entire Waterfront’s attractions, shops, bars and restaurants."

“We had a glass of wine and talked about how we could take the business further. We came up with the name LoveKeepCreate and launched the company as a partnership. Kate Tyler knows all about the art of communication and the importance of choosing the right words and images to reach an audience. After teaching English and Media to A Level students for 12 years, it seemed only natural that she should move from teacher to practitioner in 2010 by setting up her own digital marketing business, Shake Social. Kate and her team of six specialise in social media in the education and charity environments as well as for businesses, whether it’s managing communication channels, driving specific campaigns or offering social media training. With social media now the place where most businesses and organisations communicate directly with their customers or audience, Kate says a purposeful strategy can have a big impact: “Social media is vital – and it’s here to stay,” said Kate. “It has changed the way we communicate and engage fundamentally. The area of customer service is a great example. Conversations about your business or organisation will be taking place on social media whether you like it or not. You have to be in control and manage those conversations and you need to respond swiftly to any enquiries or messages. “But social media has many hats, not just customer services. It’s a shop window, online, and you can refresh your window display on social media every day.” The problem, says Kate, is that those who do their own digital marketing without any help or training are probably wasting their time – and therefore money: “Ask yourself - ‘are we getting what we want out of our social media?’ I suspect that for a lot of people managing their own social media, the answer to that is ‘no’. “That’s not surprising because digital marketing is challenging. It’s constantly changing and it’s difficult to keep up with if it’s not your area of expertise. Having someone

to manage your social media frees up your time so you can concentrate on what you do. At the very least, get some training.” Kate moved to Plymouth from Nottingham late last year and while her Nottingham-based team remains there, Kate is already growing her Plymouth office by appointing a local manager. Kate was chair of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in Nottingham so is keenly aware that many just don’t have the time to regularly refresh their social media channels. She is also experienced in the specialist field of digital communication for education and charities, in particular those that support victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence, including Rape Crisis. There are several case studies detailed on the Shake Social website. Among her recent clients was an education authority in South East England where she ran a series of courses for teachers: “It’s very important for schools to have effective social media pages because this is where most people communicate. Parents are more likely to watch an informative video on a Facebook page than read a lengthy letter that says the same thing. This is where social media can be very powerful in encouraging parents to be engaged and involved. Kate Tyler pictured with members of the Shake Social team

“And by having training about the use of images and the naming and tagging of children for example, schools can maintain this vital communication in a way that protects staff and the children.” In another recent campaign to increase public engagement, Shake Social worked with a local authority in the Midlands to target young people within the BME community to get involved in the electoral process: “This campaign led to literally thousands more going out to vote,” said Kate. So how can Shake Social help you? In the first instance, Kate meets potential clients to learn about their core values and aims. She then draws up a bespoke content strategy. It might be a social media campaign aimed at increasing customers, professionally managing a customer service presence, or raising awareness and support for a campaign or fundraising drive. Or it might be a targeted advertising campaign on Facebook, email marketing, pay-per-click, or blogs aimed at reaching a specific audience on LinkedIn. As part of the service, Shake Social constantly assesses the analytics and responds to ensure the aims of your social media strategy are being met: “We make it understandable and we take the fear factor out of it,” said Kate. “Within a month or two, you’ll see the results.” And Kate has this stark message for businesses who feel they don’t need an effective social media presence: “Ultimately, they’re at risk of not being in business in five years’ time. The Creatures Great and Small exhibition at 45 Southside, opens on April 8 and continues until May 23 and features the work of Gwen Vaughan and Tracey Benton - both of whom are well known for their humorous and collectable work. Tracey Benton is predominantly felt making and her favourite subject is native wildlife, such as hares, foxes and more recently bees. Each piece takes hours of precise needle felting which gives them their shape. In the last stage she adds the defining features of the face, forming each creatures individual and adorable character. Gwen Vaughan a ceramic artist is equally captivated by creatures great and small. Her quirky animals are captured with minimalistic features nevertheless they are very recognisable species. For her latest range she created cashmere jumpers for her figurines, making them softer to the touch. There are polar bears, whales, foxes, badgers, owls, dogs and of course little birds. Each of her creatures cleverly conveys a element of the nature of each animal. Gwen's wolf in a sheep’s coat is a beautiful example. As an independent gallery 45 Southside is passionate about promoting locally based artists. Since opening in 2009, the gallery has become known for exhibiting high quality and innovative craftsmanship all year round.

Local artist’s success in major national portrait exhibition Work by Plymouth artist Mark Fielding has been selected from nearly 2,000 entries to appear alongside paintings by some of Britain’s leading portrait artists. Mark, who has a studio gallery at the Royal William Yard, was delighted when he heard that the portrait of his wife Patricia had been accepted for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition. The Society hold an annual open submission exhibition in central London each year which is graced by portraits of royalty, celebrities, academics, mothers, daughters, fathers and sons, the exhibition is a feature of the social calendar. This year about half of

the work will be by eminent members of the Society and half by emerging artists selected through the open submission. With some 200 portraits on show it is the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of recent portraits in the country. This year’s exhibition will be on display at Mall Galleries, central London, between May 4 and 19. The Royal Society of Portrait Painters have many prizes and awards available to exhibitors, including the £10,000 Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture and the £3,000 de Laszlo Foundation Award.

Plymouth’s Marco Pierre White restaurant ‘will benefit the whole city’ It’s a few days before the official opening of the Holiday Inn’s new Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill restaurant on March 17, and hotel manager Michael Wood has taken time out to give us a tour. Staff are bustling around, cleaning here, laying tables there, and generally making sure everything is just right. Chatting animatedly over his cup of tea and joining in with the staff banter, you can tell that Michael is just itching for the ‘We Are Open’ sign to go up. Michael has sampled everything on the menu – a tasty perk of the job – and is licking his lips in anticipation of the launch. He’s not the only one: a staggering 1,000 bookings were taken for the restaurant’s first two weeks. Not bad for starters. The restaurant is already paying off, clearly, and Michael predicts that its impact won’t be confined solely to the hotel: “This brings something completely new to Plymouth and the whole city will benefit,” he said. “This is a destination restaurant and people will come to Plymouth to eat here. The restaurant has got everything – location, unique views, it’s the highest restaurant in Plymouth, and it’s got a name – and what a name in Marco Pierre White. There’s nowhere else like this in Plymouth and the volume of interest shows that there is a real demand for it.”

It’s not your usual hotel restaurant, that’s for sure. The 11th floor setting in Armada Way affords panoramic views of the Hoe and Barbican. But while the views are unbeatable and the décor is smart, the atmosphere is casual and fun, not Holiday Inn manager Michael Wood snooty. There are restaurant and bar areas with a total of 180 covers. The menu pricing has been kept competitive and is, says Michael, comparable to the prices at the restaurant before. Indeed, affordability was a 100% requirement. “We want this experience to be accessible to everyone,” said Michael, “because while the restaurant will of course cater for our hotel guests, most diners will be non-residents.” The menu itself is in keeping with the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse brand and is set to have one of its twice yearly ‘refreshes’ in May. On the current main menu, starters are from £5.95, mains, from under £12 and there’s also a tempting selection of desserts. The bar menu has classic sandwiches, smaller plates and larger plates, and there are a number of afternoon tea options to choose from. Marco Pierre White has been keeping a close eye on his newest restaurant, making sure that the dishes and the generous portions are spot on. The 25 kitchen and front of house staff – most of them new recruits – were also put through a rigorous training process. The chef has retired from the kitchen and now focuses on his restaurant brands. In his day, he was a superstar and in 1995, he became the youngest British chef to win a third Michelin star. For head chef Gavin Hobbs, working for one of his culinary heroes is a dream come true. Gavin moves to the Steakhouse Bar and Grill from the city centre Copthorne Hotel. He admits

that Marco Pierre White’s fiery reputation made him a bit nervous at first but he’s now relishing the opportunity to work with and learn from the legendary chef. So what can diners expect? “Simple food, done really well,” said Gavin. “There’s nothing pretentious about the food. Nothing goes on the plate that doesn’t add something to the dish.” And what about him, does he have a favourite three-course meal from the menu? “Creme du Barry, baby leeks and truffle oil for starter, Wheelers fish curry with mango, coriander and buttered rice for main, and Mr Coulson's Sticky Toffee Pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream for dessert!” The restaurant has cost the best part of £250,000 to refurbish and is part of a £4 million investment by the hotel’s owners to upgrade and rebrand the hotel as a Crowne Plaza in early spring. By then, every single corridor and bedroom – all 211 of them – will have been redecorated and re-furnished: “This is the most exciting period in the history of the hotel,” said Michael. “When it opened in 1971 it was the first Holiday Inn in the UK and Ireland. The rebranding and the investment demonstrates the confidence our owners have in the team here and in Plymouth as a destination, so it’s another vote of confidence in the city.” And the icing on the cake is, of course, the restaurant. We’ll leave the last word to the man himself. Marco Pierre White describes the restaurant as “affordable glamour” and explains why he spends so much time on the ambience and team: “The most important aspect of any restaurant is not the food – it is the environment you sit in,” he said. “Then it is the service, and thirdly it’s the food. If you don’t feel comfortable, you’ll never enjoy yourself no matter how good the food is. Top string players to perform The latest event in the International Concert Series organised by Jeanie Moore features two celebrated string players Peter Adams and Peter Fisher. The concert takes place on Sunday May 14 at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel starting at 3pm. Peter Fisher( below) has been described as one of the world’s finest musicians and has performed all over the world. Celliist Peter Adams’ (above) has the distinction of being the youngest ever professor at the Royal Academy of Music. May 23 PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY GAMELAN ORCHESTRA AND FRIENDS Roland Lewinsky Building, Plymouth University Conducted by Saj Collyer, the Gamelan Orchestra is made up of twenty instruments that originate from Indonesia and are made of bronze. They are built and tuned to be played together in an orchestra and produce a unique, rhythmical vibrating sound. Cattery owners find the purrfect answer at Foot Solutions!

Former police officer Douglas Hodge and his wife Olivia run a luxury boarding cattery business on the outskirts of Plymouth…but life was far from purrfect for them both. His former job in the police meant Douglas spent a lot of time on his feet and running Pippins Luxury Cattery at Brixton for nearly 10 years had also taken its toll. For a number of years he had suffered increasing pain in the ball of his right foot, which eventually became so bad that he was forced to take pain killers to cope. “I couldn’t walk without limping and the pain was really severe. It was getting me down and affecting my health in general,” said Douglas. “I had seen adverts for Foot Solutions and decided that enough was enough and visited their store in Royal Parade in August. “The member of staff who carried out my assessment was fantastic. She identified the problem and recommended custom made insoles to support my arches. “I purchased off the shelf insoles to tide me over until the custom made supports arrived and also some footwear for work called Sierra Foot Runners. “I can only say that the whole experience has been life-changing,” added Douglas. “I can now do everything I need to do without limping and it has made such a huge difference in my life. I can’t thank Foot Solutions enough.” Olivia had also suffered from foot pain for several years, although not as severe as her husband. But when she saw the difference that Foot Solutions had made to his life and health, she decided to pay a visit as well. After an assessment she chose custom made insoles. Olivia said: “I could see that Foot Solutions has made such a difference in Douglas’ life and they have helped me tremendously too. We run one of the biggest catteries in the area and that means we can get extremely busy - particularly in the summer. “Foot Solutions have certainly put a spring in our step,” she added. Chart-topping 80s band Fine Young Cannibals will complete the star-studded line-up of acts performing at this year’s Sounds of the Summer festival at Newton Abbot Racecourse.

The band, whose hits include She Drives Me Crazy and Good Thing, are the final act confirmed for the live music spectacular, which takes place on Sunday 16 July. FYC will join an incredible line-up that includes reggae royalty UB40, nineties pop group All Saints and eighties rock/pop band China Crisis. Fine Young Cannibals were one of the biggest bands of the 1980s and scored a number one album both at home and in America with their 1988 release The Raw And The Cooked. In 1990 the band won two Brit Awards for Best British Group and Best British Album. Sounds of the Summer is the third major concert hosted by Newton Abbot Racecourse, which is cementing its reputation as one of the South West’s top music venues. Tickets for the festival are selling fast as fans take advantage of a fantastic early booking offer, which only runs until the end of this month.

May 6 TAMERTON FOLIOT MAY CARNIVAL Tamerton Foliot With a parade, raffles, a bouncy castle, a dog show and morris dancing, the annual Tamerton Foliot May Carnival returns again in 2017 with origins as far back as a market festival first held in 1269. Other attractions in the parade include floats and bands, who supply the carnival atmosphere as the procession makes its way down through the village, before finally reaching the main field, where stalls and other attractions will be staged. Organised through the local community, the Carnival relies on volunteering and donations to continue as well as participants in the best float competition.

Spellbound Wood. Set in and around The Soapbox Children’s Theatre in Devonport Park, this boutique festival is the perfect way to spend the weekend dressing up as a fairy or goblin, enjoying stories, joining in workshops, being entertained by beautiful, daft or extraordinary characters, listening to music and generally having a spellbinding time in a safe and friendly environment. Can I have contact with my grandchild? Breakdowns in relationships are upsetting for all families, but for grandparents it can be even more distressing if their contact with a grandchild is affected. Unfortunately, grandparents do not have an automatic right to contact their grandchildren but the Court does have the power to make an Order for grandparent contact where it would be in the best interests of the child. The Court simply has to give permission for this first. The Court will consider the grandparent’s connection with the grandchild and the importance of the child maintaining a relationship with their wider family. Providing there are no concerns about welfare then permission to make an application for contact will usually be granted. The child’s parents will be given notice of the application to the Court and will be requested to attend the Court hearings. Prior to the ﬁrst

Court hearing, the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) will make telephone contact with all parties to understand their positions and they will carry out checks with the police and social services to ensure there are no safeguarding issues. If there is parental objection or any welfare concerns about the contact it may be necessary for CAFCASS to prepare a more detailed report. The Court will then encourage the parents and grandparents to reach an agreement and as long as the court considers it to be in the best interests of the grandchild, a contact order can be made. If an agreement cannot be reached then the Court will make the final decision. It is advisable to receive legal advice throughout this process to ensure that sufficient evidence is filed with the Court to support your application and to show that it is in the child’s best interests to have contact

with you. The family Courts have to consider the welfare of the child as the ﬁrst consideration when looking at contact and it is acknowledged that grandparents play a signiﬁcant role in a grandchild’s life. If you can demonstrate that contact will be positive for the child then unless there is evidence of abuse or violence or unless it will have a negative impact of the rest of the family relationships, it is rare that the Court would refuse a grandparent contact. Photographic exhibition with a powerful environmental message A major new photographic exhibition by Wales-based artist Mike Perry is presented at Plymouth Arts Centre from April 7 to June 17. The exhibition, entitled Land/Sea includes selected works from Perry’s Mor Plastig (Welsh for Plastic Sea) series in which he collects and forensically photographs plastic objects such as bottles, shoes and packaging washed up on the beaches of West Wales, inviting us to consider the environmental impact of consumerism and the erosive power of nature. The 1950s was a time when Britain emerged from a period of austerity and rationing after the Second World War. This exhibition looks at all aspects of design from that decade both inside and outside the home, with a diverse range of objects including furnishings, fabrics, ceramics, cutlery, magazines, machinery and the iconic Vespa. Speedway roars into action again in April as the new-look Plymouth Devils embark on their 2017 season. There's a new management team, new backroom staff, new sponsors and a talented team of riders providing a blend of youth and experience. The Devils will be racing in the National League this season the third tier of speedway - and hopes are high that the crowds will come flocking back again. Entry prices have been reduced and there's a special deal for families too. The two men who rescued the Devils are co-promoters Laurence Rogers and Mark Phillips, both highly respected figures in speedway circles in the UK. They stepped in at the end of last season when the company behind the team went into liquidation and have convinced the speedway authorities that Plymouth still has a lot to offer. Team manager Laurence said: "Mark and I are good friends and at the end of last season he called me to say that he wanted to take over Plymouth speedway - but only if I was going to be involved. "I was abroad on holiday a few days later when Mark called to say that we were the new owners!" Laurence, former boss of Somerset and Coventry Storm, added: "We then had to start preparations for the new season which meant a lot of work at the St Boniface Arena as well as organising a team which can compete against the best in National League." Laurence started from the 'bottom up' by recruiting talented starlet 16-year-old Henry Atkins from Exeter and Callum Walker, both of whom rode for him at Coventry. He then signed up two former Plymouth riders Lee Smart and Devonian Richard Andrews. They were joined by 17-year-old reserve rider Saul Bulley. "I then started looking for riders who had the potential to improve their previous race points average and was delighted when Cornwall-based Steve Boxall agreed to commit to the National League this season."

Guernsey ticked all my holiday boxes This month’s article is written by Karen Henderson who is the longest serving member of staff at Peter Goord Travel. Karen started working with the company in 1984 and has travelled the world extensively. Recently she has returned from a short break to Guernsey and Herm in the Channel Islands finding that holidays closer to home can be just as fulfilling and educational.

I have recently returned from a short break trip to Guernsey, which is somewhere I’d never thought of going before – but was pleasantly surprised at the fantastic time I had. I flew with Flybe direct to Guernsey – which took all of 45 minutes from Exeter – travelling to the St Pierre Park Hotel for my two night stay. The hotel is set in some lovely gardens with great amenities. Its spa has recently had a facelift, making it one of the best I have seen and perfect for that girly break with friends. After checking in we made our way into town and joined a walking tour of St Peter Port. I’ve never thought to do one of these before but what an amazing couple of hours we had. Our tour guide Annette explained all about the island's history of privateering and how the island became a tax free haven. She walked us through the tiny little alleyways and brought to life the hardships that folk had with disease, crime and punishment even inviting passing pedestrians the chance to be tortured and whipped. Not surprisingly she didn’t get any takers! She was extremely animated and enthusiastic about her island, the knowledge she imparted was presented in such an enjoyable way it made my trip even more special. My next little adventure was over to the small island of Herm by passenger ferry from St Peter Port. Costing less than £15 return, the trip takes about 30 minutes and on docking in Herm we soon realised we had stepped back to another time. There are no cars - so goods are being moved by quad bikes or golf carts. Two of our group travelled this way up a rather steep hill to the top of the island with the rest of us taking a 20 minute walk which gave us a better insight to the island scenery. There is only one hotel, a pub, a small shop and a camp site. Once at the top of the island the views were stunning, helped by the glorious weather. We walked down to the back of the island and around the coast path which was all fairly level and back to the Mermaid pub for lunch and a glass of wine – which was well priced – before taking the boat back to Guernsey. My last day involved a coastal walk of the south

SPRING CLEANING OFFERS coast, again enjoying beautiful October weather. We could see Herm, Sark, Jersey and the coast of France, which was amazing. Our guide talked us through the Occupation of the Second World War and how the island defended and survived it. She also explained about the island bus service - it runs virtually around the coast and is never more than a 15-minute walk at any point to the coast path – so there is no need to hire a car. To make this option even more attractive the whole island tour on the bus costs just £1! Food and drink are my favourite subjects. October couldn’t have been a better month to visit Guenrsey as most of the hotels and restaurants sign up to the annual 'Tennerfest' where in previous years you could have a two or three course meal for £10. This has increased over the years with some establishments charging around £17.50 but there are some still at £10. With over 170 fantastic fixed -priced menus available in hotels, bars and restaurants for anybody who is a real ‘foody’ this is a festival not to be missed. This year the ‘Tennerfest’ starts on October 1 and continues until to November 11, including half term week. The menus are published on-line in late September on www. tennerfest.com. This gives everyone plenty of time to book carefully select their menu and venue in advance. Working in travel I have been lucky enough to see many parts of the world with many destinations offering events and celebrations I would never have known about unless I had visited them. Guernsey is a fabulous island and perfect for someone like me who loves nothing better than long walks, fabulous scenery and the added bonus of great food at affordable prices. The ‘Tennerfest’ would definitely get me to return to Guernsey in October but if I’m honest I would be happy to visit the Channel Islands any time of the year, it ticks all my boxes. Noel’s longed-for exhibition will raise charity funds Noel Wain was painting right up until the day before he died and his attic studio in Plymouth is still packed with an array of his striking work. But now his wife Jacquie is sorting through and cataloguing some 60 individual pieces which will make up the exhibition she is arranging in order to sell almost all of his prolific output for Macmillan Cancer Support. Noel - the former picture editor of the Western Morning News - was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1934 and lived in Devon and Cornwall for many years. Both counties provided him with endless inspiration for his work, which are mostly in acrylic, although there are some junk-art constructions in the exhibition too. Jacquie has had the idea of a sale for charity for a while - an exhibition was something Noel had himself been planning for April 2013 but he died before his plans could come to fruition. Over the years he staged regular shows – which he organised himself - in and around Plymouth at venues Jacquie Wain with some of Noel’s work

CHARITY MATTERS including the Barbican Theatre and The Wharf at Tavistock. “I’ve never done anything like this before – there’s so much to think about, it’s been a fascinating experience,” said Jacquie, who gave up her job as a broadcast journalist at BBC Radio Devon in 2011 to care for Noel at their home in Stoke until he died in January 2013 at the age of 78. “I’ve had to make decisions from choosing which colour picture hooks we should use to signing off poster designs – there’s so much involved in getting a show like this together.” She is quick to thank the myriad individuals and organisations who have supported her plans from Norman Holmes at Kaya Gallery, a number of her friends and Artmill Galleries, to the team at Devonport Guildhall who have allowed Jacquie to stage the show in The Cells from Friday May 5 to Saturday May 27 free of charge. “I really have been overwhelmed with the generosity of people who have been so keen to help especially once they hear that the proceeds of the sale will go directly to Macmillan,” she said. “It seems there’s barely a life untouched in some way by cancer and Macmillan gave The late Noel Wain both me and Noel a great deal of support and practical advice.” Noel retired from the Western Morning News in 1993 after a long career to devote more time to jazz, allotment gardening and his art. The pieces which are now for sale range from landscapes to more abstract work with prices mostly around the £100 to £200 mark but ranging from £25 to £495. And although Jacquie is pleased the work - most of which was created over the past 20 years - will soon be adorning other people’s walls she acknowledges that the process of deciding which to part with has been tinged with sadness too. “They have been in Noel’s studio ever since he died so it will be strange to see them leave our house once and for all,” she said.

“But this is a chance for them to be appreciated by a whole new audience.” All funds raised from the sale will go to Macmillan services in Plymouth which support people from across Devon and Cornwall affected by cancer. Macmillan helps people living with cancer by providing cancer nurses in hospitals as well as other health professionals including GPs. The charity also gives out emergency grants to people struggling with the financial impact of cancer. “It is great to have an event like this in Plymouth and to see Noel’s art exhibited,” said Sian Ward-Edwards, local fundraising manager for Macmillan. “We rely on donations to fund our services and everything raised from painting sales will make a difference to local people affected by cancer.” For Jacquie there is huge satisfaction in knowing that the money raised will go directly to helping families in the same way that she and Noel were helped. “I know that Noel wanted his pictures to be seen so this is a way of making sure that happens and of supporting the charity that supported him. “I am keeping a few of my favourite pieces – they are of places or were painted at times that were particularly important to us both,” said Jacquie. “But I feel that the time is right to let the rest of them go.”

Hedging your bets in t Now that spring is well under way and summer is fast approaching, we are getting a lot of visits from customers who have new gardens, concrete courtyards or gardens with no features, essentially blank canvases. Many people get overwhelmed with what to do with their gardens when they are starting from scratch - deciding what to do with it can be daunting and gardens take a long time to mature. A lot of people want instant impact in their garden and a sense of maturity that small, young plants won’t be able to provide, so to meet this need we have a beautiful selection of mature specimen plants, architectural plants, topiary and screening plants from Italy that we have hand selected. In recent years more and more people have been coming to us looking for plants to use in creating hedges to replace their fencing which has been getting consistently damaged in winter storms. Fence panels are expensive to replace every year, but a well established hedge will take storm damage with no problems and last for years. They also make great habitats for birds to nest in, and this in turn reduces the number of pests in the garden that can damage your plants. We have carefully selected our range of hedging plants based on ease of care, speed of growth, good disease resistance and attractiveness. The plants we have chosen are big enough to create a decent looking hedge immediately that will fill out and mature quickly with in a season or two, but not so big that they will struggle to establish and take a lot of looking after.

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre Creating a hedge with small, young plants is certainly cheaper, but it can take between five and 10 years to establish, and using mature plants is expensive, but it will create and instant hedge, although they will require a lot of watering, feeding and maintenance to establish. By using semi mature plants like the ones we have selected, you get the best of both worlds: they are more cost effective, easier to establish and will require less looking after and will grow and mature relatively quickly. The varieties available include three types of Euonymus, three types of Photinia, including a new variety, Prunus lauroceraus ‘Novita’, a new variety of Holly (Ilex maximowizia), a new variety of Eleagnus and the traditional Cupressus leylandii. The new variety Photinia ‘Carre Rouge’ is a hybrid between the traditional Photinia ‘Red Robin’ and Photinia ‘Compacta’ which is a small, bushier growing variety. ‘Carre Rouge’ has the best qualities of both parents. Like ‘Red Robin’ it is quick growing and the beautiful bright red foliage in the spring, and like ‘Compacta’ it has small foliage and its denser and bushier, creating a strong growing, thick shrub. This variety will provide a lot more colour year round, making it an attractive asset to have in the garden as a

feature plant as well as a hedging or screening plant. It will grow in full sun to partial shade in most soil types, but a slightly acidic soil will provide the best colour. It will grow to a height of 3m (10 ft) with a spread of 2m (6ft 8ins), but responds to pruning really well. We have got a new and really interesting variety of Euonymus called ‘Benkomasaki’. It is a Japanese variety that has evergreen, dark, glossy foliage that grows in tight, upright columns. It makes a compact hedge that will require very little pruning. It is very versatile and will happily grow in sun of shade. It will grow to a height of 1.5-2m (5-6ft 8ins) with a spread of 1m (3ft). To give your garden the real wow factor, we have got in a really stunning collection of topiary, architectural plants and specimen plants that will instantly transform any space be it big or small. We have some real show stoppers that will be an instant eye catcher and talking piece that will look amazing framing the front door, in a large pot on the patio or the focal point of a border. We have two sizes of spiral topiary growth out of golden Cupressus. These have really well defined, chunky curves and are really impressive shapes. We also have two large cloud pruned golden Cupressus with with really nice round, plump pom poms. For those who want to recreate those sunny Mediterranean holiday memories in their own garden, we have a range of those pencil conifers that are widely grown throughout the Mediterranean region, particularly Italy. The variety we have is Cupressus sempervirens ‘Totem’, commonly known as Italian Cypress. Totem is an extremely narrow type of Italian Cypress suitable for smaller spaces. It is reported to grow to 4m (15ft) tall and no wider than 0.5m (18ins) wide in 10 years. It stays extremely slender, so provides a great vertical aspect for the garden without being too wide, dominant or overbearing.
