I want to leave, but I’m tied into a contract!

Contract. It’s a word that makes you sit up and concentrate on what you are doing. It’s a word that makes you feel it is important to read thoroughly and a word that is usually pre-ceded by legally binding.

I’ve been asked many times if there is a standard length of contract in the industry and the truth is that it differs from company to company. When selling a home through an estate agent you will always be asked to sign a Contract and it will almost certainly be the most popular of these which is either a ‘sole agency’ or ‘sole selling rights’. Both give authority to the property owner’s solicitor to pay the agent the agreed fee upon exchange of contracts.

When signing a contract or ‘terms of business’ as it is sometimes known, many agents will stipulate a length of time for the contract to run. This varies from agent to agent with a typical length in the industry of around 12 weeks. If it is any higher than this then you should question.

who offer zero week contracts.

These are typically done to create a point of difference against agents who have longer Chris Mervyn terms of business.

MNAEA If you are swayed by Branch Manager the security of being able to change agents quickly, then please also remember that legally (and this should also be pointed out within the terms of business), you have to give a notice period of 14 days to the agent prior to leaving anyway – so zero weeks doesn’t necessarily mean you can leave straight away if unhappy.

This ultimately means that you should be confident you are choosing the best agent to market your home from the outset - not just the agent with the shortest contract.

Whilst 20 odd weeks or even 36 weeks (yes I have heard of it happening) is too long a time to sign an agreement which ultimately ties you to that agent, I actually think that an average term actually works both

ways. It gives the vendor confidence that the agent will work as hard as they can during that period to sell their home and the estate agent a commitment that the money they spend on advertising the property will have a good chance to be recouped.

I speak for ourselves at Mansbridge Balment when I say that we will work off an average term contract ourselves. That’s because week by week we have a plan of marketing, communication and points of contact to make sure we constantly review and revise our marketing throughout the term.

That’s possibly why we have such a successful history of keeping vendors after our contract expires if by some chance we haven’t obtained a sale – because we do what we say we are going to do and work, I believe, harder than many others in the City to achieve the right price, from the right buyer, to the right timescales.

For us a contract forms a marketing plan that makes US sit up and concentrate on what we are doing as a professional agent from day one.

So blessed to have the NHS It’s frightening how our lives can be turned upside down in just a split second. We were away on a much-needed family break in Torbay a couple of weeks ago when, to my horror, my husband slipped on some steps and ended up with a dislocated and broken ankle and a broken leg.

After the initial shock we immediately phoned for help and within 15 minutes an ambulance arrived and we were in safe hands. There are so many stories these days where paramedics or ambulances are not immediately available to deal with emergencies, that we were truly blessed.

What followed was a roller coaster of emotion as we headed to Torbay Hospital’s A&E Department, where all the staff - paramedics, nurses, doctors, anaesthetists - were absolutely fantastic. It became clear that surgery would be necessary and that this would be best handled back at Derriford in Plymouth.

A trip to the Fracture Clinic a few days later and again we were so impressed with the quality of care and professionalism. A week later we were back in Derriford, this time for surgery. All went well and after an overnight stay my husband was able to come home. Again, all the staff were fantastic - especially Maria in Recovery.

From the dreadful first moment of the accident, to my husband’s return home after surgery, we saw the NHS at its best. It’s very clear that the NHS is under a lot of pressure and that without staff from Europe, Far East and Africa, it probably couldn’t function at all - but despite that we have nothing but praise for everyone who we came into contact with.

At a local level I must offer special praise for Stoke Surgery whose level of patient care is incredible. They certainly went the extra mile when it came to arranging medication and home visits, for which our sincere thanks.

All in all it has been an emotional time, but we have once again seen just how precious the NHS is - and how it must receive the resources it needs to function effectively in these difficult times of austerity.

Laura Edmunds, the crafter behind Serendipity Sea Crafts, has been creating eco art, using the treasures that she finds on local beaches since June 2016. One year on and her art made from sea glass, pieces of sea pottery, flotsam and jetsam are gathering quite a following.

The Autumn of 2016 saw her handcrafted pictures of birds and local landmarks grow in popularity, when Helen Woolley, the owner of Rockpool Trading in The House that Jack Built, Plymouth’s premier independent shopping destination, began to stock Laura’s art. Support for her work has gone from strength to strength following exposure through #plymouthhour on Twitter and in Real Devon, an online magazine found at www.real-places.com/realdevon-issue-10, when she was identified as one of Helen Woolley’s Top 10 local crafters.

Teaching languages is child’s play for award hopeful Becky When it comes to teaching French and Spanish to young children, it seems Becky MacLean from Plympton is speaking the right language!

Becky, who runs the Kidslingo classes in the Plymouth area, has been nominated for a top award just 18 months after setting up her business. She’s one of five to reach the final in the Most Outstanding Activity Leader for the Under-5s (South of England) category of the national awards run by the What’s On 4 Little Ones website.

The winner will be decided by a panel of judges at the Awards Ceremony in London on October 4: “Just being in the final is wonderful,” said Becky. “It’s a lovely surprise and I can’t thank people enough for their support.”

Since setting up the Plymouth area franchise of the national company, Becky has rapidly built up her pupil numbers to around 250 a week. Her Facebook page, meanwhile, has 1,300 ‘likes’ and all 37 reviews are 5-star reviews. Already, she’s talking about extending her area into Saltash and South Devon.

For Becky, the success and the award nomination further vindicates her decision to quit her job as a secondary school modern languages teacher so she could run her own business and spend more quality time with her two daughters, Jessica and Molly.

“It was a big leap of faith,” said Becky. “I’d been a teacher for eight years but I wanted a life change. I wanted to focus on my family and on my health. The stresses and pressures

that teachers face is just too much and I reached the stage where I just didn’t want to do it any longer. I thought ‘what can I do with my skillset?’ and this was perfect.”

Becky left the community college where she taught at Christmas 2015 and by February 2016, her business was up and running. The youngest pupil she’s ever had was just five weeks old, while the eldest are aged nine – although she’s looking to introduce classes for children up to the age of 11.

So how do you teach a baby French and Spanish? Well, for a start the classes are nothing like the lessons you’d see at school. The teaching methods are all about educating through play and engagement, with only the older children doing some written work.

Becky explained: “We have a multisensory approach for the very little ones and we use Makaton signs in the classes so that the babies can pick up language and can sign as well.

“We have lots of fun through play, singing and nursery rhymes. The children are learning the languages without realising it almost; they’re having fun and they’re picking up words and sentences at the same time. And their parents and grandparents love it too!”

Becky holds the classes in hired venues such as local halls. She also provides classes for pre-school, nurseries and other child care settings, with a maximum of 12 children per class. Current classes are in Plymouth, Plympton, Plymstock, Peverell, Crownhill and Brixton but other locations are being added all the time – often as a result of requests.

There is also a Kidslingo@home service for small groups of parents who band together: “That’s great if you have about

four children between you and you’d rather the lessons were at home,” said Becky.

Free taster sessions are available, so parents can see how their children like it before signing up: “I’d say ‘come along and give it a go. It’s quality learning – and it’s not boring! And making mistakes is allowed. It’s by trying things that children learn.”

The courses are over sevenweek terms throughout the school year, with a 30-minute lesson each week. Classes also take place during school holidays and these include a craft element, too. Becky currently works with one other tutor to help her and she’s hoping to bring in another tutor soon.

According to Becky, there are a number of reasons why parents are choosing to educate their children in French and Spanish at an early age: “Often, one of the parents might be French or Spanish-speaking or sometimes the families have friends who are from there and they want to learn the language. Another reason is that the parents want their children to speak the language

when they’re on holiday. And a really big reason is that they can see the value in their children speaking these languages and becoming proficient in them.”

As for Becky, she’s fallen in love with teaching again: “It’s lovely seeing the pride in the little ones’ faces when they know the answers, and seeing the babies smiling when they come in the door. I’m having as much fun as them!

“And the fact that Jessica and Molly are enjoying learning the languages too is the icing on the cake because it was for them that I did this.”

So definitely a case of ‘je ne regrette rien’ then? “Absolutely! I’ll never look back.

In fact, I wish I’d done this sooner.”

Full Rotation animator David comes full circle with a return to his home city From his home studio in Plymouth, animator and creative director David Mattock is crafting beautiful content for big name clients all around the world.

David, 41, returned to his home city a year ago after leaving in his 20s to forge a career in graphics and animation in London and overseas.

Working for his own company, Full Rotation, David provides high end animated content for diverse clients that include film production companies in the US and global brands that are looking for innovative marketing or instructional tools, as well as eye-catching content for small businesses.

He’s currently working on a projection mapping commission for a client in Saudi Arabia and on an animation intro for a promotional film for the 2018 Pirelli calendar.

And he recently completed work on permanent projection installations at two temples in India.

“To be able to do all of this from my upstairs office with views down to Cornwall is like a dream,” said David.

David collaborates with other talented professionals in the creative industry, bringing together their skills to build an impressive portfolio. He’s now keen to develop a similar collaborative network in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.

David got his Higher National Diploma (HND) in graphic design at Plymouth College of Art and set up his own graphic design company in the city. But after working largely on corporate identity and printed promotional material, he decided he wanted to get involved in animation.

He moved to London to work and his jobs included working on the Peppa Pig website: “That’s when I got really interested in 3D, it was a real directional change,” said David, who lives in Peverell.

After spending some time travelling – during which he met his Brazilian wife, Fran,

in Rio – David returned to London and went on an intensive course in 3D animation: “That was nine years ago and I’ve never been out of work since. The key is to have a wide skill set, to be able to do things across the spectrum.”

David and Fran moved back to Rio for two years, where David continued to work for his UK clients and continued to build up a UK client base from South America. He collaborates on projects with friends who are based abroad, including an animator who lives in Spain and used to work with the famous Aardman Animations studio.

“I work with others in the UK too, so I’ve always got projects on the go as well as my own animations. It’s long hours but it’s exciting work and I love what I do.”

David specialises in character and creature animation.

Among his recent commissions was to create a squirrel character called Pip the Squirrel for a series of educational films for the British Wildlife Centre.

But he also provides design concepts and content for small and medium sized businesses and corporate organisations to help them market their products or services: “2D animated explainer videos are so much more engaging than reams of words,” he said.

“Increasingly, businesses are looking to use videos to show how their products work rather written instructions because

they’re easier to understand and more fun. I’ve done these for construction companies and medical firms. This is the way things are going.”

With two young boys, David and Fran decided to leave the south east last year and move to Plymouth for the environment and to be closer to his family: “Plymouth has completely changed since I left, it’s really blown me away,” said David.

“When I left there were only a couple of design studios and now there are loads of companies. There’s a real vibrancy now in the creative industry in Plymouth. It’s why I think there is so much potential to work collaboratively.

“It’s all about making relationships, building trust and helping each other out. By connecting your different skills, it opens up lots of opportunities.”

Having achieved one of his dreams – working from a home studio with a beautiful view – David is now keen to realise another: “I’d love to create a children’s TV series,” he said.

“It’s a tough area to get into but that’s my ultimate dream I think.”

A chance to explore art and the city in the biggest ever Plymouth Arts Trail

From Newnham in Plympton all the way down to Devonport and the Royal William Yard on the Tamar estuary and with plenty of points in between, almost 30 artists will be putting Plymouth on the arts map in September, with the nine-day Plymouth Arts Trail.

Some 28 artists are taking part in the September 2-10 event, which is organised by the Drawn to the Valley network of professional artists.

The artists are hoping the event will eventually grow to become as successful as the Open House Arts Trails in Brighton and Bristol, where they’ve become big visitor attractions.

The Plymouth Arts Trail is part of Drawn to the Valley’s annual Open Studios event. This year, 100 of the group’s 160 professional artists are taking part. The main criteria for membership is that the artists must be living and working within 5 miles of the Tamar, on either side.

At the Plymouth end and side of the river, the group has grown from just a handful in the past few years, prompting them to establish a dedicated Plymouth Arts Trail, complete with map. The trail has no public funding at all; it’s entirely funded by the group.

“Plymouth deserves a good arts trail,” said group member Fi Smart, who specialises in illustration and ceramics. “It’s one of the few major cities in the country that doesn’t have one.

And yet it’s got a fantastic arts foundation, with the University and Plymouth College of Art so the potential is there for Plymouth to become a major arts hub.”

Fi is sharing an Open Studio at the Mannamead home of printmaker Gay Kent, one of the trail organisers: “When Drawn to the Valley was first set up in 2003, Plymouth artists would go up into the valley and share studios with artists up there, so we didn’t have many here in Plymouth,” said Gay, of Compton Park Road.

“Then, about five or six years ago, we thought we’d get something going. At first there were just a few of us with Open Studios so it’s wonderful that we now have so many that we can put together a trail such as this.

“Once people know it’s here, it will take off,” she added. “If you look at Flavour Fest, that took a while to become what it is today. And Brighton’s Artists Open Houses started off very small. It’s not about us, it’s all about putting Plymouth on the map. It’s about the bigger picture.”

But the Plymouth Arts Trail isn’t just about art. It’s also about getting out and exploring. Rosie Kearton is sharing an Open Studio with another local artist, Bryony Upton, in Ker Street, Devonport: “It’s a lovely way for people to discover various parts of the city,” said Rosie. “When I moved here seven years ago, I didn’t really know anyone. Then I went to the Open Studios and I got to know the area and meet lots of people.

I did Open Studios and I really enjoyed it. So many people came in and said ‘wow, this is lovely’. We’re all joined by the river and Devonport has historically played an important role in the economy not only of Plymouth but of the Tamar as a whole. So it’s fitting that so many of the Open Studios are in this area,” she added.

The artists are using a yellow chair as a symbol to help people spot the Open Studios around the city. Where a chair isn’t practicable, a yellow chair picture will be displayed.

Little clusters of Open Studios are dotted throughout the city, so that people can take in a few within walking distance.

All the artists are inspired by Plymouth and the wider South West, and many are award winning artists, including Fi and Rosie.

At the top end of the trail is the Plympton cluster which includes Sheron King’s Mad Hatters Studio at the historic Old Newnham Farm, a location dating back in part to medieval times and with links to Sir Francis Drake. You’ll know when you’ve arrived here: Sheron, who creates and holds workshops using upcycled textiles, ceramics and mixed media, intends to hang her yellow chair from a tree!

Himalayan Spi 10 fantas

Thirty-one New Street on Plymouth’s Barbican has a rich history dating back to the Elizabethan age.

Built in the late 1500s, it would have witnessed the Mayflower setting off from the harbour just a few steps down the cobbled road.

The current chapter in its long and colourful history began in 2007 when chef and businessman Kishor GC walked through its doors. His mission? To transform the previous eatery there into the best Indian and Nepalese restaurant in Plymouth.

Welcome to Himalayan Spice.

Ten years on, and the restaurant – next door to Elizabethan House – is a firm favourite with locals, visitors, traders and corporate clients from some of the city’s biggest organisations, including Plymouth University, Babcock, MoD, and Derriford Hospital. With three distinct dining areas over two floors, it’s also popular with groups wanting a space to themselves.

Kishor’s old friend Krishna Rayamajhi joined him as the restaurant’s head chef, following a career in Mumbai and Dubai before bringing his skills to the UK. His 20 years of experience has helped Kishor in fulfilling his mission, with his food garnering four and five-star comments on the major review sites.

Kishor admits it wasn’t easy to begin with, particularly when it came to introducing new cuisine to customers: “We’ve built it up from nothing, really,” he said. “But now we’re very busy, we’re open seven days a week and we’ve almost doubled our staff.”

Kishor says Krishna is one of the reasons why customers keep on coming back: “It’s all down to his recipes, flavours and his traditional cooking style, the way he uses the fresh spices which we grind ourselves, and his cooking techniques.

“A lot of people tell us that our food tastes different to elsewhere because of that freshness and the flavours. One of the most recent reviews on TripAdvisor says we make the best curry in Plymouth.

That sort of feedback is very nice to read.”

Krishna agrees that the secret of their success is to keep it simple and let the flavours do the talking: “There’s nothing fancy about what we do here. The food is fresh and consistent, the

You don’t have to take the restaurant’s word for it.

Among the regular customers is David Heads, who volunteered his own testimonial during our visit: “The food here is the best in Plymouth,” said David. “The flavours are completely different.

But it’s not just the food, it’s also the service and I love the atmosphere, too. I try to come here every week if I can.”

The menu features all the Indian favourites and popular Nepalese dishes including Gurkhali Lamb Shank, Himalayan Cocktail Masala, Himalayan Chicken, Himalayan Salmon, Lamb Kathmandu, Kukhura Masala, the nation’s most famous specialty, Chicken or Lamb Mo Mo and the all-time favourite, Chicken Sadeko.

For beer lovers, Himalayan Spice has Golden Everest Beer on tap: “I think we’re the only restaurant in Plymouth that has it and it goes extremely well with our food,” said Kishor.

Himalayan Spice has 60 covers in three different areas: two downstairs and one upstairs. The front downstairs area has a more intimate feel, while the room at the back is a perfect place for special occasion celebrations. The upstairs room can also be booked for small private parties, and the menu can be tailormade for parties.

So, what’s next on the menu for Himalayan Spice? Well, it seems a new chapter is about to be added to the story: “We are investing in the future of the business and are about to freshen up the interior,” said Kishor. “We are also looking to develop our corporate offering, which is a growing part of the business because of the dedicated spaces we can offer.”

And he added: “Our aim is to always improve our customer experience. We want everyone who comes here to have a really nice time and enjoy great food. As simple as that.” We’ll raise a glass of Golden Everest to that!

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Himalayan Spice has a special offer throughout September. Customers who pre-book to eat in the restaurant from Sundays to Thursdays will get 10% off their bills, using the HS150 code. The average spending per head is £19.

Opening times are 6pm-11pm Thursday to Sunday, with late opening until 11.30 on Fridays and Saturdays.

“I walked in, in pain, and walked out pain free!”

Jo Dixon is a Marine Research Scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratories; she also competes in dressage, breeds horses, trains riders at competition level and she has four lively dogs – so her life is very active.

The quality of Jo’s lifestyle was threatened by pain in the joints of both her big toes. Advice from specialists was to have steroid injections to manage the pain, or an operation to fuse the joints. Neither option was attractive, so Jo paid a visit to Foot Solutions.

“It was incredible,” said Jo, “I walked in, in pain, and walked out pain-free!”

Pressure distribution measurement, and 3D contour mapping - all part of her free assessment - showed that only a small portion of her feet was in contact with the ground due to her high arches. This put severe strain on her big toe joints. “I also had referred pain in my knees and hips,” she added.

This is a problem that Foot Solutions’ expert staff see a lot, and the initial help given was an off-theshelf orthotic (an insert to spread the weight more evenly through her feet).

At the same time, Jo ordered a pair customised arch supports and chose shoes from a wide range to suit her style and her needs.

“The staff are really knowledgeable and helpful.

The options and advice I received was amazing. I can now walk correctly – I’ve even got orthotics for my wellies and a pair of wedding shoes!”

The immediate pain relief was enhanced even further once her custom-made inserts arrived. “I was so relieved when I used the off-the-shelf version,” said Jo, “but when I got the customised orthotics – wow!”

Jo, like many customers whose quality of life has been improved, has recommended Foot Solutions to friends and family. Her Dad has diabetes – Jo is taking him to see the team very soon.

The launch offered partners and businesses a taster of what is to follow in September, with a morning of fascinating talks and demonstrations.

The Plymouth Seafood Festival, organised by the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, takes place on Saturday September 16 and Sunday September 17, and will be bringing the Barbican and Sutton Harbour alive with a celebration of locally sourced and sustainably caught, high quality seafood.

The Festival will be offering visitors a weekend full of delicious dishes for all the family to enjoy as well as hands-on activities, including a children’s activity trail, cookery fun workshops where they can touch and taste local produce, as well as fascinating demonstrations and competitions.

Well known regional chefs from some of the best restaurants in the South West, will be showing off their culinary skills in the special Cookery Theatre. Throughout the weekend visitors can sample the delights of everything from lobster to whelk, as well as learning some new cooking techniques, such as picking crab.

Visitors will be spoilt for choice with the huge selection of delicious food stalls to enjoy, and the children will love the crabbing competition along the harbour, by the Boathouse Café. CATERed will be entertaining the children with hands-on cookery fun and activities, where they can learn about local produce through touch and taste.

The National Marine Aquarium will be producing a fun trail with activities for the children to complete throughout their visit, with the opportunity to win some great prizes.

New for this year is the second demonstration area at Quay Square, where you can watch demonstrations, join in Q&A sessions, learn about what fish are in season from our industry partners Plymouth

The event also sees the return of the fantastic IMechE Cardboard Boat Race, which will be on Commercial Wharf on Saturday. Build a boat out of nothing but a few bits of cardboard and some sticky tape, and sail it around a course in Plymouth harbour. The winner is the last one to sink!

CRAB FESTIVAL Other highlights include the street food area on West Pier and on Sunday 17 September celebrity chef Mitch Tonks will be hosting a Crab Festival at his premium seafood restaurant Rockfish. With live music, entertainment, a stand for pots of crab cocktail, fresh crabmeat to buy and take home and of course a special menu featuring this great local shellfish.

Plymouth Art Weekender sees launch of new international arts project Plymouth will host the third Plymouth Art Weekender (PAW) in September, the UK’s biggest art weekender, and launch a new international arts project, We The People Are The Work.

The three day programme from September 22 to 24, features a host of diverse events, implemented by Horizon, a collaborative two-year programme of visual contemporary arts across the city, which will include a series of diverse exhibitions, performances and workshops, combining to strengthen and build upon the city’s dynamic arts scene.

We The People Are The Work (Sept 22 to Nov 18), will explore ideas of power, protest and the public. Six internationallyacclaimed artists from the UK, Canada, France and Mexico will work closely with local residents to create new artworks inspired by Plymouth’s rich heritage, its people, and their

aspirations for the future, to be displayed in galleries across the city.

Antonio Vega Macotela and Eduardo Thomas’s newly commissioned film will be hosted by Peninsula Arts at Plymouth University, the largest contemporary art gallery in Plymouth.

The artwork will explore notions of representation, identity and visibility by focusing on local residents who appeared as extras in Tim Burton’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland, parts of which were shot in Plymouth’s shanties, the pubs of Plymouth as well as prominent local figures such as Beryl Cook.

Local exhibitions Until Dec 2018 PLYMOUTH - FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION Council House, Armada Way Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians. The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of post war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collection of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explores the themes of destruction and reconstruction.

Until Sept 2 PLYMOUTH CONTEMPORARY Peninsula Arts Gallery, KARST Now in its second year, the Plymouth Contemporary, run in partnership with Plymouth City Council, is an open submission exhibition, providing a platform for new, up and coming creative talent alongside artists working nationally and internationally. The artists, selected by a panel of curators, art directors and artists were asked to respond to the theme ‘Visions’, a pertinent subject at a time when the world, on the surface at least, seems to be going through turbulent change.

Until Sept 9 OUR BERYL: BERYL COOK AT HOME Council House Beryl Cook (1926 - 2008) is one of Britain’s best loved artists. Often referred to as ‘Rubens with jokes’, her work is instantly recognisable and is represented in private and public collections around the world.

Although shy, Beryl took a great interest in people. From nightlife of all varieties, to the more innocent pursuits of line dancing and sunbathing on the beach, her paintings reveal a diverse spectrum of human activity and her strong sense of humour. Co-curated by her family, this exhibition is crammed full of insights into Beryl and her outlook on life.

Experience ‘pura vida’ on tour in Costa Rica

One of the perks of our industry is that Tour Operators will whisk us away on Educational trips to sample a destination and check-out glamorous hotels. It is much more unusual to be given the chance to experience an actual tour, but thanks to Trafalgar that’s exactly what lay in front of me.

I will confess apart from the association with those bug-eyed bright green frogs and a high spirited football team Costa Rica was a mystery to me.

Our route would take us from the Caribbean coast, past towering volcanoes, to the warm and inviting Pacific Ocean. That’s just 75 miles as the crow flies, however, crows don’t fly very straight here and to see it all there will be quite a bit of on the road time.

Trafalgar pride themselves on the quality of their Travel Directors (far more than just a tour guide) and I knew from the moment I met Fabian that his enthusiasm and absolute love of his country would carry us through those sitting on the bus periods. As he said very early on “if the sun shines then hallelujah…….. if it rains then hallelujah”, you get the idea.

Over a week we were going to be staying in four different hotels so I was ready to live out of my suitcase. I really agonised over what clothes to pack with my outfits varying from a dodgy Daktari impression to swimming shorts. On reflection this is a tee-shirt and shorts destination with a variety of footwear necessary from sturdy trainers to flip-flops. I was very worried about insect bites, but with vigilant application of bug-spray I didn’t have a problem. As a result my “Jungle Jim” costume stayed firmly in my bag.

The Sheraton in San José is a decent city hotel and served its purpose after a 12-hour flight. Unsurprisingly I slept very well and thanks to the time difference had no issues with our early start the next morning. A brief city tour was followed by a journey combining our comfy coach and a motorboat to Tortuguero National Park.

Tortuguero meaning “the land of the turtles” provided us with our most basic accommodation, Laguna Lodge. The hotel boasts eco-friendly credentials and the rooms are homely, but perfectly functional.

Although on the beachfront the hotel is not about sunbeds and umbrellas, in fact in many ways the coastline resembles Cornwall with breaking waves and a heavy dark sand. It’s here that the Sea Turtles come to nest later in the year and I didn’t get to observe any in June. If the turtles are a must see for you

chose your dates carefully, I believe July to September are best.

There is no shortage of other wildlife and I woke-up on day three to the haunting screams of howler monkeys. It was an animated start to a day of discoveries cruising through the park’s canals where a variety of monkeys, caimans and exotic birds await around every corner. My highlight of the day was gazing in awe as a spider monkey swung above our heads.

It would be impossible to capture every wonderful moment, but a good sports camera with a zoom or pocket sized binoculars would have been extremely useful throughout the trip. Many of my companions used their mobile phones, but this seemed a bit fiddly and I would have worried about water damage.

I think it’s worth pointing out that you are not at the zoo and part of the adventure is spotting the animals as they go about their daily lives. Feeding is strictly frowned upon and as you’ll soon discover at your hotel monkeys don’t need to be invited to dinner.

During one impromptu stop we stood at the roadside squinting at distant trees for a glimpse of a sloth. As these drowsy tree-dwellers spend most their time asleep you would have thought it would be easy to pick one out. It wasn’t. Skip forwards a couple of days and we had the excitement of a mother and baby within a few feet of us…Hallelujah!

That night it rained really heavily, but as dawn approached the howler monkeys easily out gunned the pounding rain. I was somewhat surprised to open my curtains to bright sunshine and as if posing for photographs two toucans (no pun intended) perched in an adjacent palm tree. I’m not good with breeds, but these were of the Toucan Sam variety, you know, the mascot for Froot Loops breakfast cereal.

The next day involved getting the boat back to the mainland and travel to the centre of Costa Rica. I nearly said the island, but with borders with Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south and east that would be geographically incorrect. It’s strange how much this feels like an Island Nation though. The people refer to themselves as “Tico’s” and they are very proud of their heritage.

The Costa Rica national football team played a World Cup Qualifying game during my visit and I cannot speak highly enough of the friendly and inclusive atmosphere while watching the match in a local bar. I’m sure my brand new Costa Rica shirt helped. I really hope they get to the finals so I can wear it again.

Trafalgar are very clever at including regular and interesting pit-stops along the way. We visited a palm plantation where we got to taste some local delicacies and a Victor, zip wiring rehabilitation centre allowing us

TRAVEL MATTERS to get up close and personal with some rather large amphibians and reptiles. Snake holding was entirely optional and I elected to observe proceedings from a distance.

Our coach was amazing. Brand new with superb air-conditioning it was a welcome retreat from the heat of the day and this is incredible...

Wi-Fi and internet connection was available as we drove along. This country never fails to surprise and nearly always in a good way.

Our next two nights were spent at the Arenal Paraiso Resort & Spa where apparently all rooms have a volcano view. Perhaps I was just unlucky, still the opportunity to try out the thermal pools was too good to resist and my new friend Ian and I set off to explore.

The water in the pools is strangely yellow in colour due to its mineral content and as you move higher so they get warmer. We were enjoying one of the hotter pools when the heavens opened, so there we sat for an hour. We could easily have had a beer in one hand and an umbrella in the other, bizarre.

Day five broke with bright sunshine and to my amazement there right in front of my room was a massive volcano. The cloud that had hidden it the previous evening was gone. I’m very relieved that I didn’t complain to reception about the view.

This was definitely walking day (hence the sturdy trainers) and a morning hike up the volcano was followed by an afternoon of hanging bridges all at eye-level within the lush jungle canopy. Think of the bridge that celebrities cross as they are voted out of the jungle and you’ve got a good picture.

The next day’s journey to the Caribbean coast was broken-up with the ultimate holiday thrill. Zip-wiring through the tree-tops must be one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done. I was terrified on the first platform and I’m not really sure how I managed to take the plunge. After a while I was enjoying every moment and I savoured the last couple of descents. I wonder if I will ever experience anything like it again.

The beaches at our final port of call, Manuel Antonio National Park, were stunning and our hotel, the Parador Resort & Spa was exceptionally good. If this had just been a beach holiday then I would have been more than happy to spend a week here, but that would be to miss the point. You may only visit Costa Rica once so take a tour like I did and experience “Pura Vida” for yourself.

Kitchen crafts and card workshops are a huge success for Janet Janet Stirling is a local lady with lots of creative talent. Not only is she a great chef but she also produces stunning floral arrangements. More recently she has started making hand-made cards. I went to visit her to find Art Matters out how she has managed to with Kerry Cole combine holding a craft class in her kitchen and supporting a local charity. I asked her how her interest in card making grew.

She told me: ‘I’ve always liked crafts and in particular paper crafts. I used to make things with my kids when they were small and now I make things with some of my grandkids. I started producing my own Christmas cards a few years ago. I looked online and found out how to make pop-up cards and really enjoyed creating those. I was then asked to hold a Christmas card making morning for one of our local churches. So I bought all the supplies and took on that first Christmas card workshop and was hooked. The ladies were delighted with their creations. Some were very nervous as they didn’t think they could do it but it’s like everything else, I told them, “Once you know how it’s done, it’s easy.” We had a good laugh playing with our pop-up cards.’

Even though Janet’s card making was fun, she felt they looked amateurish because she had to leave them blank with no printing or sentiments.Then one day Janet came across some stamping equipment. After purchasing it, she was delighted that it gave her cards a much more professional look.

Wanting to share her pleasure with others, she decided to hold regular card workshops in her kitchen. This

has proved very successful. The small amount she charges is all donated to a local charity, Square Peg Studio. Janet said: ‘My good friend, Claire Hine runs this art school for kids with autism. So it seems fitting that we can support such a good cause while enjoying a creative process ourselves.’

Janet loves to see people enjoying making the cards and especially when they are pleased with their creations. She said: ‘I smile as I’m tidying things away when they’ve all gone home. I think, “Well, that was a good morning!” because no matter how they felt on arrival everyone left happy, and that makes me happy.’

Occasionally someone commissions Janet to make a batch of cards or one for a special occasion or birthday. She loves doing that too. She told me: ‘I have become adventurous lately in attempting fancy fold cards and ‘Z’-fold cards which are actually paper models that fold down to go into an envelope. Amazing! Finding new style cards excites me and I enjoy the challenge. I just love what I do! I am constantly surprised at how creativity of any kind affects others.

Sometimes a woman will be very nervous and negative about her abilities but when I show her how simple it is to make a good-looking card, her confidence begins to grow. Creativity in any form lifts the spirit and builds confidence and self worth. I realise that I am just facilitating our Creator’s work, in using His creativity to help others become more as He created them to be. The reality is, I am just having fun and spreading the joy.’

KF Kitchens make it 3rd time lucky for Jude and Andy!

After 20 years with their dark oak and black granite kitchen, Andy and Jude Hext from Yelverton decided it was time to brighten things up a bit with a brand new kitchen.

But where to go, with so many options to choose from? For Andy and Jude, it was a case of third time lucky when they visited KF Kitchens’ Plymouth showroom at Faraday Mill in Cattedown.

“We’d already had two companies in to see us,” explained Jude. “I was adamant that I wanted everything to go – except the Rangemaster cooker. I was determined to keep that. So

they both came back with their designs and they’d basically built the kitchen around the Rangemaster. The lay-out of the kitchen was more or less the same.

“Then Nathan from KF Kitchens came in and put me right straight away! He said ‘that’s got to go’. Trust me, you can’t have that cooker there. You’ve got to be facing your garden and your guests’. So with Nathan it wasn’t a case of just coming in and measuring up. He was very passionate about his work and you could tell that he loves his job.

“It was his ideas and enthusiasm that sold the kitchen,

This Summer – Get Your Legal Affairs in Order

Passport - check, sun cream – check, foreign currency – check, Will - ? In the lead up to your Summer holiday you are more likely to be counting down the hours until take off rather than considering the contents of your Will or Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), if indeed you have either?

It is estimated that over half of UK adults have not made a Will which is surprising when the majority of the population are likely to have an opinion as to who they would wish to inherit their estate. The proportion of individuals who have made LPAs is even less.

At Wolferstans, we often find that it is not until an individual is about to venture on a foreign trip or faced with a period of hospitalisation that they stop to consider their personal affairs and the choices they have made in relation to the distribution of their estate on death or the management of their affairs if they were to lose capacity. Some clients are reluctant to draft Wills and LPAs as they are concerned about committing themselves to ‘final’ decisions which they may want to change in the future.

With both a Will and an LPA, once made, you can always take steps to make new documents,

providing you have capacity to do so. We actively encourage existing clients to meet with us regularly to review their Wills and LPAs as we appreciate that circumstances change. These reviews are often free of charge.

Why put off what are likely to be some of the most important decisions of your life? There’s no better time like the present to start getting your affairs in order. Consider our handy checklists below to focus your consideration as to what you may wish to include in your Will and LPAs: Our starting point checklist for making a new Will: • Consider carefully who you would like to inherit your estate – would you wish to impose any age limits for inheritance?

• Establish what your estate consists of – you may have business or agricultural interests, or specific items that you would like to gift?

• Decide who you would like to administer your estate – who do you trust to deal with the distribution of your assets and finalise your personal affairs? This may be different to the people you wish to benefit from your estate.

• Allow enough time to make a Will. The drafting process can be quite involved, it is important that you have sufficient time to consider your options

You can appoint up to four Attorneys and four replacement Attorneys.

• Consider whether you require both types of LPA, one document covers financial decisions and the other covers health and welfare.

really. His ideas were so different to ours, but he was right and we were wrong. He was inspirational.

“The design was a developing process. We basically gave him a blank canvas but he and Derinda at KF Kitchens talked everything through with us at every stage and showed us how the kitchen would look on their computer. We had quite a few visits to the showroom; everything was done meticulously.”

All the shaker-style drawers and cupboards were built bespoke and painted a very light grey, while the work surface is Silestone. The corner units include a pull-out mechanism and the larder unit includes a Vauth-Sagel larder that rotates when pulled out so nothing is ever out of reach.

Jude and Andy chose NEFF appliances: an induction hob on a centre island; integrated fridge-freezer; integrated dishwasher; wine cooler; and three ovens that include combination microwave and added steam facilities. For added ease of use, the oven doors open and slide into a slot beneath. There’s even a warming drawer. And, hidden away under the island, is a draw that opens out to reveal a built-in ironing board.

The work was carried out in the Spring. A few months on, are they still happy with their new kitchen? “Oh yes, we love it,” said Jude. “You can see how light the room is now. And it’s dead easy to keep tidy because we now have so much more storage space. It’s going to make cooking at Christmas a whole lot easier, too.

“It’s just a beautiful room and we’re so pleased that we’ve done it. And that we listened to Nathan’s advice! We would certainly recommend KF Kitchens to other people.”

“We’ve got a great line up of activities taking place throughout the day, from free ‘have a go’ workshops to classic cars on show, free tasting sessions, live music, street entertainers and our very own finals of ‘Plymouth’s Top Talent, in conjunction with Radio Plymouth.

“And if that’s not enough we’ve teamed up with the West End Food Fayre in Frankfort Gate: local celebrity chef Peter Gorton will be cooking up a storm exclusively using ingredients from the Market and chatting with our stall holders.”

The Grand Day Out will run from 10am until 4pm with activities taking place throughout the day.

One of the key highlights of the Grand Day Out will be the grand finals of Plymouth’s Top Talent, hosted by Radio Plymouth. For two weeks, from August 26, Radio Plymouth will be calling out for talented Plymothians to apply for auditions on Wednesday September 13. The winner on Plymouth’s Top Talent will receive the fantastic cash prize of £500 as well as the opportunity to perform on the Radio Plymouth stage on the Hoe on Bonfire Night!

Added to that there will be planned chaos roaming the Market in the form of a selection of madcap street entertainers, guaranteed to keep everyone amused and looking over their shoulder… they’ll also be joined by some familiar faces as some of the Market’s regular music acts play a mix of favourites songs, old and new.

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre September is a transitional month in the garden, marking the end of summer and the start of autumn, but it doesn’t often feel that way.

Basket

After a cool damp August, we tend to have sunny, mild Septembers. This provides us with perfect weather to revamp our pots and hanging baskets that are looking bedraggled after the bad weather or a little worn and neglected after our summer holidays.

If planted carefully and wisely, autumn hanging baskets will not only last right throughout the autumn, but will stay looking good throughout winter and well into the end of spring. Afterwards, many of the plants can be transferred into the garden and will last for years.

Bedding such as violas, pansies and cyclamen will provide colour right the way through with dead-heading and under plant with the dwarf flowering spring bulbs such as Narcissus Tete a Tete for spring flowers.

Heathers and grasses also make great fillers in winter baskets and tubs. There’s no need to stick to just winter pansies, there are a whole host of hardy, evergreen plants that can be used.

Calluna vulgaris ‘Beauty Sisters Twins’, more commonly known as Scottish Heather is a great plant to use in baskets and tubs at this time of year. It is a new take on using traditional heathers in pots and baskets as it provides two different varieties grown together in the same pot, a darker colour paired with a lighter colour.

flowers and bright green foliage really do bring contrast, depth, warmth and cheer into the garden as the days get shorter.

It belongs to a group of heathers known as bud bloomers; this means that they produce brightly coloured flower buds that never fully open, which means they can’t be pollenated.

As a result the flowers don’t fade, as it’s the pollination of the flower that causes it to fade and drop off.

Callunas hold their flowers for a long time, and stays looking good right throughout the winter. They are easy to look after, provided you give them full sun and a well-drained soil. They do prefer an acidic soil, but they will be fine in multipurpose compost while in the container or basket.

It can be planted into acidic soil in the ground in spring.

They are compact growers, growing to a height of 20cm (8ins) with a spread of 35cm (13ins). To keep them bushy and compact, give them a trim after flowering.

For the centrepiece of pots and baskets, conifers have always been used traditionally, but for a more modern and contemporary look, there are a range of evergreen grasses that look great at this time of year.

Buxus (Box), Choisya, Rosemary, Euonymus and Hebe all provide great structure and evergreen colour. Skimmia Japonica ‘Rubella’ and Gaultheria Procumbens also boast showy flowers or berries to help brighten things up.

Grasses are also great for using in baskets, the best varieties for planting in tubs and baskets at this time of year are Unicinia Rubra, Festuca Gluaca ‘Intense Blue’, Anemanthele Lessoniana, and Carex.

Grasses are great for softening hard and harsh structures, plants, boundaries and straight edges. They add a touch of air, grace and elegance to the garden. Alternatively, if they are used in a minimalistic and contemporary way, they can look bold, architectural and stylish.

a trailing shrub with long shoots clothed with gold-and-green leaves and purple star shaped flowers in spring is, in my opinion a much more attractive alternative to Ivy. Ajuga, Lamium, and Heuchera also make great substitutes for Ivy and will continue to look great well into the spring.

Before planting, you need to prepare the basket. If you already have one with the remains of a summer display, take it down and evict the contents. Don’t be tempted to reuse compost - it will be exhausted of nutrients and could harbour pests.

Before autumn truly sets in, roses will need to be sprayed against mildew and hedges neatly clipped. Planting at this time of year will allow perennials and shrubs to settle in before the harsh winter weather, and they will get off to a good start next spring.

The ground is a giant radiator and the heat of a good summer will remain in the ground for some time yet. With the addition of moisture, this makes the autumn one of our best planting seasons as the roots of plants put in now will have time to engage with their new home before the onset of winter.

This places them in a strong position to survive the months ahead and get away for next spring. This is a particularly good time of year for planting shrubs and trees, especially those that are evergreen. They will get a good root system in the ground and will be less likely to die of drought in the frozen ground and be hardier to cope with the cold in winter.

Although you can wait until November to put bulbs in, I like to get as many bulbs as I can in the ground so they can start growing. They will get their roots growing, giving them a head start for the spring. Good, strong root systems will ensure better and bigger plants in the spring, putting on an impressive show.

Buy hardy cyclamen as pot-grown plants as they will establish themselves far quicker than dry corms. They are perfect for areas of thin grass under deciduous trees and beneath shrubs in the border. There is still time to plant colchicums and autumn flowering Crocus in the ground or in pots for a burst of late season colour.
