Getting into the Christmas spirit Well, it’s only a few weeks away now, so hardly surprising that this month’s issue has a festive feel about it.

Inside this bumper edition is a 24-page pull out supplement with details of all the events taking place between now and Christmas which help make Plymouth the No.1 place to visit, shop and have fun with the family.

Continuing with the Christmas theme, we have been talking to an amazing lady called Cindy Willcocks, who is the driving force behind Operation Snow.

Helped by a host of volunteers, businesses and organisations she ensures that dozens of people who would otherwise spend Christmas alone or on the streets, get their fair share of the Christmas spirit. This includes a slap up meal on Christmas Day with gifts for everyone. You can read all about Operation Snow on pages 10 and 11.

Cindy has set a great example - and one that we could all follow. Maybe you have a neighbour or relative who is likely to be alone at Christmas. What better way to share the festive spirit than by inviting them to join you for the Christmas celebrations.

Meanwhile our features writer Laura Joint has visited the Langage Farm Shop in Plympton to find out more about the fantastic range of Christmas hampers and delicious puds that are on offer to customers. They make tasty gifts!

Businesses encouraged to display work by up and coming artists

Talented up and coming artists may soon have their work on display in businesses across the city.

Plymouth University is giving local businesses the opportunity to select art by current university students or recent graduates for their boardrooms, offices and foyers.

The first business to take part in the scheme is accountancy firm PKF Francis Clark, and its Plymouth office is now showing seven works by Plymouth graduate Rachael Allain.

Originally from Guernsey, Rachael Allain holds a BA Hons in Fine Art, PGCE, an MA in Contemporary Art Practice and an MFA in Photographic Arts from the University of Plymouth.

Her double pinhole images are created using expired camera film and allowing water and light to wash over the camera to capture the sea and the horizon. Her new series Light Water Exposures - captures Plymouth seascapes.

She said: “I have always been fascinated by the sea, the ebb and flow of the tides, the intertidal zone and the hidden realms of our visual perception, particularly the places that are invisible to us.

“The works that are now on display at PKF Francis Clark are site responsive, following a recent residency at Plymouth Arts Centre, near the Barbican so it is very fitting to see them displayed in a boardroom with a stunning waterfront view.

Taking part in ArtWorks has given me an opportunity to show my work in a different, more commercial, environment.”

Phil Power, associate professor in Fine Art Contextual Practice at the University of Plymouth, said: “We have really enjoyed working with PKF Francis Clark, to bring Rachael Allain’s work to their offices.

“ArtWorks gives our students and graduates the experience of showing their work outside the university. The students produce a huge amount of work and it is extremely diverse, so we think there is scope for businesses to loan works to

add interest to their buildings, and to focus the conversations around the table. This is a great way for students to learn more about the commercial side of being an artist.”

ArtWorks gives students the opportunity to learn more about the commercial aspects of the art world and the experience of explaining their work to new audiences. PKF Francis Clark is now in discussion with the University about how the firm can support students to prepare for their future careers by learning more about operating in a commercial environment.

Martin Atkins, of PKF Francis Clark, said: “We had the usual, generic office images on our meeting room walls. When the university asked if we would be interested in displaying work by art students or graduates we were intrigued.

“ArtWorks is a great way for a business to support and promote local artists, while also having new and exciting art to enjoy with clients and staff. Rachael Allain’s work looks fantastic in our meeting rooms, which are used by around 100 people a week, and the images are proving to be a good talking point with clients.”

The project was developed by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the GAIN team at the University of Plymouth.

Director of research and Innovation at the University of Plymouth, Adrian Dawson, said: “ArtWorks is a simple concept, but it could have a number of benefits for the region’s businesses and for our students. As well as giving businesses the opportunity to loan exciting pieces from up and coming local artists, it gives our students and graduates experience that could be invaluable for their future careers. “

KF Kitchens make it 3rd time lucky for Jude and Andy!

After 20 years with their dark oak and black granite kitchen, Andy and Jude from Yelverton decided it was time to brighten things up a bit with a brand new kitchen.

But where to go, with so many options to choose from? For Andy and Jude, it was a case of third time lucky when they visited KF Kitchens’ Plymouth showroom at Faraday Mill in Cattedown.

“We’d already had two companies in to see us,” explained Jude. “I was adamant that I wanted everything to go – except the Rangemaster cooker.

I was determined to keep that. So they both came back with their designs and they’d basically built the kitchen around the Rangemaster. The lay-out of the kitchen was more or less the same.

“Then Nathan from KF Kitchens came in and put me right straight away!

He said ‘that’s got to go’. Trust me, you can’t have that cooker there.

You’ve got to be facing your garden and your guests’. So with Nathan it wasn’t a case of just coming in and measuring up. He was very passionate about his work and you could tell that he loves his job.

“It was his ideas and enthusiasm that sold the kitchen, really. His ideas

were so different to ours, but he was right and we were wrong. He was inspirational.

“The design was a developing process. We basically gave him a blank canvas but he and Derinda at KF Kitchens talked everything through with us at every stage and showed us how the kitchen would look on their computer. We had quite a few visits to the showroom; everything was done meticulously.”

All the shaker-style drawers and cupboards were built bespoke and painted a very light grey, while the work surface is Silestone. The corner units include a pull-out mechanism and the larder unit includes a VauthSagel larder that rotates when pulled out so nothing is ever out of reach.

Jude and Andy chose NEFF appliances: an induction hob on a centre island; integrated fridgefreezer; integrated dishwasher; wine cooler; and three ovens that include combination microwave and added steam facilities. For added ease of use, the oven doors open and slide into a slot beneath. There’s even a warming drawer. And, hidden away under the island, is a draw that opens out to reveal a built-in ironing board.

Designing a dream kitchen is one thing; fitting it is another. Again, KF Kitchens surpassed all expectations: “What we really liked about them was that they encompassed the whole project,” said Jude.

“They did the whole works themselves, not just the fitting, but the flooring, the plastering, the plumbing, the decorating and the electrics.

Once you have a price that’s it, there are no nasty shocks with bits being added on along the way.

“They also organised the Silestone worktops from Mayflower Stone.

Everything went like clockwork. It was a three-week job and there were no gaps. And our kitchen fitter, Gary, was absolutely brilliant.”

The work was carried out in the Spring. A few months on, are they still happy with their new kitchen? “Oh yes, we love it,” said Jude. “You can see how light the room is now. And it’s dead easy to keep tidy because we now have so much more storage space. It’s going to make cooking at Christmas a whole lot easier, too.

“It’s just a beautiful room and we’re so pleased that we’ve done it. And that we listened to Nathan’s advice! We would certainly recommend KF Kitchens to other people.”

Meet Cindy Willcocks - the driving force behind the amazing Operation Snow Dozens of people who are homeless, lonely or just down on their luck will be celebrating the Christmas spirit in style this year - thanks to Plymouth mum Cindy Willcocks.

Cindy is the driving force behind Operation Snow, which was launched in 2015 after she had spent time volunteering at a local church on Christmas Day. “I had always wanted to do something worthwhile and so I went along as a volunteer at the church on Christmas Day 2014,” she said.

“It was great what the church did, but I felt that it was missing the true Christmas spirit. I decided to try an organise something myself so came up with the idea of Operation Snow.”

Cindy’s drive and determination meant that by Christmas 2015 she had been joined by a band of enthusiastic volunteers and had managed to persuade individuals and organisations to donate food and gifts for the big day.

Hamoaze House in Mount Wise - where Cindy had previously worked for three years - made their premises available for the day and the event was a big success.

“We didn’t know how many people to expect, but on the day around 70 people turned up. Many of them were homeless, while others faced Christmas alone,” she said.

“I think everyone felt a real sense of belonging, which was great. We had a hog roast for the first event - and an amazing couple slept in their car on Christmas Day so that they could start cooking in the early hours.”

The following year, thanks to Cindy’s continuing efforts to promote Operation Snow, she was delighted when people donated turkeys, vegetables, cup cakes and a variety of gifts for everyone attending.

“We also had about 40 people helping to prepare all the vegetables on Christmas Eve, which was amazing.”

On the day itself dozens of people turned up again including a number of families.

Local councillor Chaz was also a surprise guest.

Not content with helping people Santa (aka Coun Chaz Singh) on Christmas Day, Cindy spent Boxing Day touring the streets of was a surprise visitor at the 2016 Operation Snow lunch Plymouth distributing food and gifts to people sleeping rough.

Preparations for Operation Snow in 2017 are now gathering momentum, but Cindy would welcome more help and donations. “We like to provide useful gifts for the people who come along, so items such as socks, gloves, hats, toiletries and chocolate - but definitely not alcohol - would be much appreciated.

“We could always do with more help, so if anyone is at a loose end at Christmas please come along. We will be at Hamoaze House from 12 noon for lunch and there will be entertainment through until 5pm for anyone who wants to stay longer.

“If anyone knows of people who are likely to be alone on Christmas Day, please encourage them to come along. If they can let me know in advance that would be great, but people can just turn up if they want to.”

Operation Snow reflects Cindy’s heart for people who may be having a tough time in life.

She qualified as a registered mental health nurse in 2000 and has since worked in a variety of community and inpatient settings, specialising in mental health and substance misuse, from birth and beyond.

She founded Arterne CIC in 2013 to provide a range of services dealing with issues surrounding mental health and wellbeing. It’s slogan is ‘enriching the next generation.’

Cindy said: “We support the message that ‘we all have mental health’ and raise awareness about how important it is within individual lives to maintain good mental health and to support the notion of a happy and healthy existence.”

She added: “Love is all there is...before you can love another, you must first learn to love yourself.”

The hamper service is available all year round and retail manager Tracie Germain said: “We carefully select the producers we partner with, to ensure that what we are offering is of the highest quality. Much of it is sourced from Devon. We strongly believe in showcasing the wonderful produce we have in the region and making it available through our farm shop.”

The shop is celebrating its 10th year this December – but the farm’s history goes back much further than that, to the 1950s, when Len and Elizabeth Harvey started making cream from their dairy herd initially for their own use. In those days, the farm was at Langage. The cream side of the business grew almost accidentally, with friends and relatives asking if they could have some, and the word spread farther afield. Finally, in 1980, they decided to launch it as a business.

Today, the company is run by son James and grandson Ben Harvey, employing around 50 people working on the farm or in the dairy, crafting the cream, yoghurts and ice cream with 36 flavours to choose from.

The shop in Plympton sells the full range and the ice cream is available in retail packs or by the scoop to eat in or take away.

The shop also stocks quality produce, and has a fresh food deli counter.

Jane has been shop manager here ever since it opened in December 2007: “Ridgeway is like a village, it’s lovely,” she said.

“We know our customers, they’re like part of the family and we always listen to their feedback about our latest ice cream flavours.

Celebrations as culinary excellence brings second AA Rosette for The Duke of Cornwall

The gastronomic offerings of a Plymouth restaurant have been recognised with a coveted award. The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, on Millbay Road, has received a second AA Rosette for its fine dining restaurant, following a recent highly favourable inspection.

This award is a significant accolade, with the Duke’s restaurant joining only a handful of establishments in the city with two or more AA Rosettes to their name. Two Rosettes are awarded only where restaurants can meet the exacting standards of innovation, technical skill and culinary judgement that the AA demands for this award level.

Fewer than one in 20 of restaurants across the UK are considered to reach the quality required for two Rosettes to be allocated.

The Duke of Cornwall Hotel has developed a growing

reputation as a fine dining venue in the South West. Main courses from its menu include dishes such as stone bass with local mussels, smoked bacon, sweetcorn chowder and Maris Piper mash.

Among the starters available, diners can find chicken liver parfait, rhubarb and date chutney and toasted brioche.

Desserts are a similarly tantalising prospect, one example being a dish of apricots and almond sponge, featuring apricot gel, almond praline and stem ginger ice cream.

Behind this ambitious cuisine is an adventurous and talented kitchen team, led by head chef Kevin Scargill and sous chef Nick Reed. This creative duo frequently get out and about in Devon and Cornwall to meet the region’s food producers – an ongoing quest that provides not only a supply of fresh ingredients, but fresh ideas too.

As well as yielding an extra Rosette for the Duke of Cornwall’s restaurant, the recent AA inspection brought another ratings boost for the hotel. It has been given a Hotel Silver Award in addition to its existing Three Star Hotel classification. This award recognises a superior quality within the star rating, and is based on factors such as the standard of hospitality, service and cleanliness offered.

It’s a very happy 10th birthday at Nibana Restaurant & Takeaway!

Plymouth’s multi-award winning Indian restaurant, Nibana, is celebrating 10 successful years by saying ‘thank you’ to its customers with a range of special offers.

The Crownhill restaurant marked its anniversary in September with 20% off restaurant bills for a week and is now offering 20% off takeaways, while banquet nights in the restaurant are available for just £11.95 per head.

For the two brothers who own Nibana, Shah and Hisbul Hussain, it’s a way of sharing their success with their loyal customers who have made it one of the most popular restaurants in Plymouth.

Shah and Hisbul opened the restaurant after the family moved from London to live in the Crownhill area: “I remember saying when we opened that our target was to reach 10 years and we’ve achieved that,” said elder brother Shah. “Because if you get that far, you’ve done well – and long may it continue.

“We set out to create a modern, contemporary Indian restaurant in this part of the city,” he added. “We’d been working at our uncle’s takeaway just up the road and felt the area needed a high quality Indian restaurant.”

Hisbul added: “Because this was our first restaurant and we’d only had experience in takeaways before, a lot of people said we would only last six months. But we didn’t pay

attention to that because we had confidence we could do well here.”

Anyone who’s been to Nibana will know all about the welcoming, friendly atmosphere which, says Shah, is one of the reasons for the restaurant’s popularity with diners: “Our customer interaction is something that they really like. We do our own training here and friendliness and customer service is a very important part of that. And we are a team. Most of us have been here since we opened.”

Another big reason behind Nibana’s success is, of course, the delicious food: “That is always down to the ingredients,” said Shah. “If you eat a dish here, you will taste all of the flavours and all of the spices.”

Head chef Salik has been here from the start, overseeing the consistency and quality that has earned Nibana prestigious national awards from the English Curry Awards and the Cobra Good Curry Guide: “Our customers know that if they order their favourite dish it will taste just as good as last time,” said Shah. “That’s why so many of our customers keep coming back.” Favourites include chicken chashni, chicken tikka masala, and balti and jalfrezi Nibana’s impressive restaurant dishes.

The current special offers include 20% off takeaways of over £15, Sundays to Thursdays and Banquet Nights which are available Sundays to Tuesdays (both promotions excluding Bank Holidays and special event days such as Mother’s Day). Takeaways, which are collection only, offer customers restaurant quality food to enjoy at home, while Banquet Nights offer a choice of starters and mains and a rice or naan bread per person. Poppadoms and pickles are included in the price of £11.95 (minimum of two people.)

Vegetarian options are available.

Being part of Plymouth’s multi-cultural society is important to Shah, Hisbul and the Nibana team. Every three months, Nibana donates meals to local charity, Shekinah, to give to homeless people in the city: “The last time, they messaged us to say that our food fed 70 homeless people and we’ve had great feedback about that,” said Shah. Nibana also visits local primary schools with a selection of dishes and to talk about Asian culture and food.

So what next for Shah and Hisbul now that Nibana has turned 10? “More of the same!” said Shah. “We just want to keep on doing what we’re doing.”

And Hisbul added: “It’s been a really good 10 years. We have a lot of regular, loyal customers and we’d like to thank all of them for their support over the years.”

Nibana is open seven days a week, 5.30pm to 11.30pm, with last restaurant orders at 10pm and last takeaway orders are 10.30pm. Lunchtime service is available if booked in advance.

The stars of Peter Pan brought some early Christmas cheer to Plymouth as they officially launched this year’s spectacular Theatre Royal Plymouth pantomime.

Soap Star Steve McFadden will lead the panto cast as the villainous Captain Hook alongside Andy Ford as Smee in a spectacular production of Peter Pan, which will run from December 15 to January 13 next year.

Former British Soap Awards ‘Villain of the Year’, Steve McFadden is one of Britain’s favourite soap-baddies and has been a regular on our TV screens for nearly two decades.

Steve McFadden said “Nothing beats playing to a live theatre audience, so I can’t wait to be on stage at the Theatre Royal Plymouth this Christmas. I’m also really looking forward to spending time in a beautiful part of the country which I love and exploring Plymouth properly between shows.”

Steve was joined at the launch by one of Britain’s most successful pantomime comedians Devon-born Andy Ford who will play Mr Smee.

Andy featured on ITV’s Big Big Talent Show hosted by Jonathan Ross in 1997, winning an invitation to appear on the Royal Variety Show that year.

From there his career has included numerous television appearances and he has earned iconic status in the pantomime world, having appeared alongside national treasure Dame Barbara Windsor, David Hasselhoff, Henry Winkler, Louie Spence, Warwick Davis and many others.

Plymouth Symphony Orchestra welcomes talented pianist Alexander Ullman Plymouth Symphony Orchestra’s latest concert features a programme of Brahms, Albinoni, Borodin and Rachmaninov, featuring leading pianist Alexander Ullman.

The concert takes place on November 22 at Plymouth Guildhall, starting at 7.30pm.

Borodin’s Prince Igor Overture opens the concert with its bold Russian themes, and oriental influences. In great contrast the second work is Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor.

This haunting melody, with its slow and solemn pace, originally written for organ and strings, is particularly well recognised for being used in innumerable films and television programmes.

Pianist Alexander Ullman joins the orchestra for a performance of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Alexander has performed widely in Europe, Asia and America and over the last year has returned to Wigmore Hall and made his debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Manchester Camerata. Rachmaninov himself played the challenging solo piano part at its premiere in 1934.

The concert concludes with Brahms’ 2nd Symphony which is full of lightness and warmth, conjuring a lyrical, pastoral feel. The symphony was written during a summer visit to Austria in 1877, a brief amount of time compared to the many years he spent completing his epic 1st Symphony.

It was premiered in 1877, was an unqualified success and the symphony has remained one of the most popular in the classical symphony repertoire.

The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is one of the longestestablished orchestras in the country and attracts many distinguished soloists, with Ralph Kirshbaum, Guy Johnston, Tasmin Little, Joanna MacGregor, Michael Petrov and Martin James Bartlett among the performers to play with the orchestra.

WE WILL R War, peace and its aftermath are all reflected in a moving programme of remembrance called ‘We Will Remember’ in Plymouth in November.

The concert, which is part of the 24th international concert series, is organised by Jeanie Moore and West Country composer Clive Jenkins, whose work ‘No Man’s Land’ forms a central part of the programme.

The event, which takes place on Sunday November 19 at 3pm at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, features the Chamber Ensemble of London led by its director Peter Fisher, with soloist Chris West on double bass.

It will be the third performance in the South West of ‘We Will Remember’ in commemoration of the First World War. The first was at Dartington Hall in 2014, the second at Dillington House in 2015 and this year in Plymouth. Next year will be the final performance at St James’s in London’s Piccadilly.

The work includes excerpts of English, French, German and Russian poetry from the Great War, as well as works by Vaughan Williams, Hindemith and Kreisler, composers who fought in the war.

There will also be lighter music from the period with works by Ivor Novello and Irving Berlin prominently featured.

REMEMBER The Chamber Ensemble of London - which features up to 14 hand-picked string players - is directed by violinist Peter Fisher, who is recognised as one of the world’s finest musicians.

The first half of the concert features Edward Elgar’s Chanson de Matin, followed by Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 1914 version of The Lark Ascending for violin and piano.

Next up and one of the highlights is Clive Jenkins’ major work called No Man’s Land - a suite for double bass and strings with readings from English, German, French and Russian poets to introduce the movements.

The first half is then concluded with ‘On the Home Front’ – a selection of popular English songs of the period including work

by Ivor Novello.

“My husband has got his life back” David and Sylvia Crome, from Dobwalls, have been married for 46 years and it is fair to say that expert help from Foot Solutions transformed their lives.

David and Sylvia Crome

David was told by a surgeon that, in basic terms, his foot had completely collapsed. He was in constant pain and had stopped daily walks with their dog. He lost interest in visiting National Trust gardens with Sylvia, and found simple tasks like walking upstairs and getting in and out of cars difficult.

He was offered surgery to fuse ankle and toe joints but David and his surgeon were both reluctant.

“The recovery time was anywhere up to 6 months, and I needed follow up surgery too, with an equally long period out of action,” said David. “I decided to just stay on painkillers and try to cope.”

As well as limiting his walking, that coping included changing the car for one that was easier to get into, ordering a special ‘easy to get out of’ chair and even converting part of their home to a downstairs bedroom.

Fortunately, on a shopping trip in Plymouth, Sylvia found Foot Solutions. David visited them in May, and following a thorough assessment his bespoke arch supports were ready two weeks later - with stunning results.

“It was an immediate transformation,” said David, “I rated the pain as 8 or 9 out of 10; now it was just two or three. My foot position was hugely improved and I could walk much better.”

Sylvia noticed the difference straight away: “I couldn’t believe the change,” she said, “He was two inches taller, stood straight, he lost his stoop and his shoulders were back.

Before, he got short of breath so easily, due to stooping, now he is much better - all from just having the arch supports!”

Other noticeable changes include less pain in his hips and knees, and some unexpected changes that Sylvia is pleased about: “He’d become short tempered and unsociable because of the pain. Now he’s completely different. He’s more patient and interested in things, we can visit gardens, he walks the dog every day. We’ve always enjoyed doing things together, now we can do that again.”

“David’s whole personality has lifted,” says Sylvia. “My husband has got his life back, and I just can’t thank Foot Solutions enough.”

Cornish artist’s handiwork features in new animated film ‘Loving Vincent’

Cornish artist Sarah Wimperis was the only English artist out of 125 from all over the world who produced tens of thousands of paintings for the remarkable new movie Loving Vincent.

Sarah spent five months in Poland working on the film and in that time contributed 788 paintings out of a total of 65,000.

The highly rated animated film is being screened at the Plymouth Arts Centre in November.

The world’s first fully painted feature film brings together the paintings of Vincent van Gogh to tell his extraordinary life story and every one of the frames of the film is an oil-painting handpainted by a small army of 125 Artists working on Loving professionals.

Widow Marguerite Elwick, who is in her 80s, has suffered from osteoporosis in her spine and arthritis in her hips and knees for a number of years.

In constant pain she was finding it increasingly difficult to get in and out of the bath at her Crownhill bungalow to have a shower.

“I could only have a shower because having a bath was impossible as a result of all the pain I was suffering,” said Marguerite.

She decided that the only answer was to have a new bathroom installed with a walk-in shower.

“I contacted one of the big national companies and the figure they quoted was much higher than I thought it would be. They were also very pushy and used hard-sell techniques,” she added.

“They kept putting me under pressure and in the end I said I was going to find a local supplier.

“I had seen Jobel’s advertisements and decided to make contact with them. A neighbour took me to their showroom

in Millbay, where I met Dan Freeman and had a look at all the options available.

“He could not have been more helpful. There was no pressure and he talked me through all the different solutions available.”

Marguerite, whose husband Tony died five years ago, chose the new style bathroom - and was delighted to find that the Jobel price was roughly half the total quoted by the national company.

“I am so glad I went to Jobel,” she said. “They did an absolutely perfect job and I cannot fault them in any way. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending them to anyone.”

“They were all wonderful and cleaned up every day so there was no mess.”

The old bathroom with its dated three piece suite was completely gutted by the Jobel team, walls were replastered, new electrics installed and new flooring laid.

A spacious walk-in shower with fold up seat and grab rails is the focal point of the bathroom, which also includes a comfort height toilet, and new sink with vanity unit and chrome fittings throughout.

Details of new lux development on T Work on the development of nearly 90 luxury apartments on The Hoe is due to start in early 2018.

The new development is on the site of the former Quality Hotel and will also feature a luxury hotel.

Developer Henley Real Estate in conjunction with Knight Frank and Chartsedge has officially launched the apartment development as ‘1620 The Residences’, which will feature 88 ocean fronting apartments.

TRAVEL MATTERS Tracey Morris has worked for Peter Goord Travel for over five years now and is well known for her extensive knowledge of cruising, having sailed on over 20 voyages. This month she talks about her recent trip to Sri Lanka, opening her eyes to a country she has never visited before.

As part of my job with Peter Goord Travel, I am lucky to be able to visit some amazing places. I have recently returned from a seven-day tour of the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is in the Indian Ocean, just south east of the tip of India. It’s an 11-hour flight from the UK. Until 1972 the island was known as Ceylon. The name Sri Lanka means resplendent island, and it certainly is!

The best way to see Sri Lanka is to hire a car and driverguide. They will spend the duration of the trip with you and will make sure you see the main points of interest. As I travelled in a group of 10 we had a guide, a driver and a driver’s helper.

After meeting our guide and driver at Colombo Airport, our first stop on the tour was for one night in Negombo.

Negombo is a city just North of Colombo and is generally used as a stop to recover from the flight or at the end of the tour before you fly home.

Negombo has an abundance of hotels along a wide sandy beach. Swimming here at certain times of the year is not recommended due to strong currents. There are also many bars and restaurants within the city should you prefer to experience Sri Lankan hospitality.

The next morning we travelled away from the coast towards the interior of the Island. We were heading for the city of Kandy. On the way we paid a visit to The Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. Here you can see an amazing flower garden, magnificent palm avenues, bamboo collection and the orchid house.

The gardens also house a residence of the late Lord Mountbatten. From here we continued to Kandy, which sits in a mountain plateau 1600 feet above sea level. The three hour drive from Negombo takes you through many busy towns and villages and lush green landscape.

Kandy is most famous for The Temple of The Tooth Relic, which is believed to hold a tooth of Buddha. It is one of Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist temples. The tooth is kept in a heavily guarded gold casket behind bulletproof doors. Thousands of people flock to the temple daily to pray and to present an offering of flowers to Buddha. We visited the temple at sunset which is a quieter time of day.

On day three, we headed even further into the mountains and to an area called Nuwara Eliya. This area is famous for Sri Lanka’s most well-known export – tea.

The drive from Kandy took three hours and we were now at 6,100 feet above sea level. Here we visited the Glenloch Tea Factory where we were shown the process of how the tea is picked right through to how it is packaged for export.

plantation and experience tea picking for ourselves. This was an amazing experience to see how the humble tea bag starts its life, and to see how hard the tea pickers work. Before leaving the plantation you are invited to try a cup of tea.

The next day was the longest drive of the trip as we drove South to Udawalawe National Park, which can take up to six hours with regular breaks.

On arrival at Udawalawe we were able to see the wildlife that this area is famous for. Elephants could be seen grazing off in the distance with one of them coming to the side of the road hoping to be fed!

The park has 1600 elephants which have over 119,000 square miles of park land in which to roam. After spending a night at the Safari Hotel, we were up early for a 6am game drive.

The drive lasted three hours and during the drive we spotted elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, jackals and many types of birdlife.

After the game drive we were taken to the Elephant Transit Home, which was the highlight of the trip for me. The home is run by the Born Free Foundation and has 60 orphaned elephants. The elephants are kept at the home for at least five years and are then released in groups back into the wild.

We could watch them being fed and bathed although all from a distance as they try to have as little human interaction as possible.

The next part of our tour was to take us along the South Coast. Our first stop was the area of Hambantota, staying at The Shangri La Hotel.

I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone who likes to play golf as it has its own 18-hole course.

From here we continued along the coast to the city of Galle, which is well known for its fort – now a World Heritage Site founded in the 16th Century by the Portuguese.

From the walls of the fort you can view the Galle International Cricket Ground, which was devastated by the tsunami on December 26 2004. It was later rebuilt and matches resumed there three years later. The England cricket team will be touring Sri Lanka in 2018 – an ideal excuse for a holiday and some cricket!

We were now coming to the end of our tour and after spending a night in Galle, we followed the west coast back up towards Colombo.

For our final night we stayed in the historical Mount Lavinia Hotel (pictured below).

The hotel is 210 years old and steeped in history. As a former house of The Governor, it houses a museum and is colonial in style. The hotel was used as a film location in 1956 for The Bridge Over the River Kwai and in 1957 it opened the first nightclub in Sri Lanka.

The next morning it was time to begin our journey home.

The trip from Mount Lavinia will take you through the old and new areas of Colombo. Traffic in Colombo is an issue and it can take up to two hours to get to the airport. On arrival at the airport we said farewell to our guide and driver and checked in for our flight back to London.

I must be honest: Sri Lanka was certainly nowhere near the top of my list as a holiday destination before travelling there on the this fabulous educational trip.

The culture, the wildlife, the history and the friendliness of the locals has made me realise that this is a great country to visit not just as a two-centre holiday with places like the Maldives and Mauritius, but also a one stop holiday.

I can now see why so many honeymooners include Sri Lanka as part of their dream holiday. I do love cruising and this will always be my main passion – either selling it or going on cruises myself – but Sri Lanka is somewhere I would not hesitate to return to in the future.

Plymouth’s Inspire Wealth shares best practice alongside Prime Minister Theresa May in Parliamentary Review Plymouth firm of independent wealth consultants, Inspire Wealth, appear alongside Prime Minister Theresa May and Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond in the 2016/17 Parliamentary Review for Finance.

The annual review – which looks back on the year in industry and at Westminster – aims to showcase best practice as a learning tool to the public and private sector.

Across all policy areas, the Parliamentary Review is sent to over half a million leading policy makers. The articles in the document act as both a blueprint for success and a template for reform.

Inspire Wealth, based at the Royal William Yard, were selected to provide an article in the Finance Review and the firm, owned by experienced finance expert Peter Williams, is the only one to represent Devon and Cornwall.

The Prime Minister commented that “this year’s Parliamentary Review follows a significant year in British politics” and this is reflected in the articles from best-practice representatives.

Peter, who has been in the industry for over 30 years, attended the recent launch of the Parliamentary Review at a gala evening at The Terrace Pavillion at The House of Commons: “It’s extremely prestigious for Inspire Wealth to

be recognised by being invited to contribute to the Finance Review,” he said.

“Attending the event at the end of September at Westminster was an interesting experience and it was good to meet other people who have also been recognised.”

During the evening Peter was able to talk to one of the event’s key speakers, former Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg. Peter revealed: “He was very funny actually. He told me ‘there’s no point in talking to me, I’ve got no money’!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion all round, with Champagne on the Terrace on a lovely evening.”

In his article in the Finance Review, Peter calls on the Government to look again at the blanket ban on pensions cold calling. He says the effect of the far-reaching restrictions has left many people without any expert advice and are making poor decisions about their savings and pensions as a result. Peter welcomes any legislation that can deter financial scammers but feels that checks could be brought in to eliminate this risk.

“It has always been a concern of mine that people simply do not save enough money,” he writes in the Review. “The problem stems from the fact that it is not encouraged enough. It is an area that financial advisers such as ourselves have an important role to play.”

Peter argues that while the Government is keen for people to save more, not enough is being done to ensure they make informed choices. With the ban on pension cold calling, more savers will be making decisions simply based on an internet search.

“The Government should recognise the importance of advice, not bypass it,” said Peter. “They might need to be more proactive, to prevent people making costly mistakes.”

The Parliamentary Review was established by former Government Minister David Curry in 2010 and the autumn release is now a key fixture in the political calendar. The Prime Minister’s former cabinet colleague, Sir Eric Pickles, was recently appointed chair of the Review. He said: “It has never been more important for Government to hear the views of business and the public sector in a constructive forum. It is also a vital time to share best practice and progress.”

A Plymouth firm of independent funeral directors is supporting a project run in partnership by Tectona Trust and local charity, Shekinah, which enables people in recovery from substance abuse and mental illness to spend a ‘life-changing’ week learning valuable life skills on a voyage on board the tall ship, Tectona.

They also help to plan and navigate the course. Before the voyage, each Shekinah client must show they are substancefree and are tested an hour before going on board.

The sailing voyage is preceded by a six week ‘Re:vive’ Programme which is based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), offering participants tools to help them navigate into a more positive future.

The report says: ‘[The authority] is dealing with more than ever new claimant solicitors. We have also seen an increase in poorly investigated claims and claims where the care clearly was not negligent being brought by lawyers who do not specialise in clinical negligence work.’

New campaign to pro mental health and we of people living in Ply A major event has been held to kick off year four of a campaign to make Plymouth a healthier and happier city.

The focus of year four of Thrive Plymouth – the city’s ten year plan to be healthier – will be on improving everyone’s mental wellbeing, and was launched on World Mental Health Day in October.

The event, held at The Marquee, Rolle Plaza, Plymouth University, was led by Plymouth City Council and was aimed at encouraging local stakeholders to help promote the range of different ways everyone can help improve wellbeing.

Around 150 stakeholders from a range of organisations attended the event.

Councillor Lynda Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care for Plymouth opened the event followed by a video message from Johnny Mercer MP. Speakers included Dr Ruth Harrell, director of public health for the city council, Sarah Stewart-Brown, Professor of Public Health for Warwick Medical School, Cindy Willcocks from Arterne CIC, and Sarah Bird and Sarah Lees,

from the council’s Public Health team.

There day also featured a series of activities on ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’, and the premiere of a video of a dedicated voiceover for Plymouth from Dawn French.

Councillor Lynda Bowyer said: “We are very pleased to launch year four of Thrive Plymouth, following the success of our previous three years’ work with schools, workplaces, and most recently, on localising the national One You campaign.

This has seen our local Thrive Plymouth Network go from strength to strength.

“It is particularly timely that we are launching this year’s theme on World Mental Health Day itself. We’ll be asking all partner organisations to help share the ways we can all stay well and promote the use of the Five Ways To Wellbeing framework.”

She said that Plymouth City Council was one of 98 local authorities which had signed up to the Mental Health Challenge - a national initiative which commits councils and elected representatives to actively promote better mental health and wellbeing.

“We really hope the rest of the city gets on board with this.”

It’s at this time of year when good evergreen structural plants come into their own and provide the garden with interest and colour until the spring.

Evergreen plants can get overshadowed by showier plants in the spring and summer and can quite often get overlooked and forgotten about, but they provide the garden with a permanent structure and a backbone to its overall design.

When everything in the garden has faded for winter, they can become the focal points and features of what would otherwise be a dead and empty looking garden.

Whilst having evergreens in the garden provides yearround interest and can unify the whole garden in the spring and summer, it is important to carefully choose which evergreens to plant.

For a longer season of interest, I’d recommend choosing plants that will flower in the spring or summer, or plants that change their foliage colour throughout the seasons. That way the plant is providing interest throughout several seasons instead of one, and is working hard to earn its place in the garden.

Cacti and succulents are the trending house plants this year. Overall most cacti and succulents require minimal care and possess some of the most impressive flowers in the plant kingdom.

Plymouth Garden Centre is getting more varieties both in size and range from plants as simple as Aloe Vera to the weird and wonderful Stapelia.

The general rule when looking after cacti and succulents is to give them a warm, sunny position in the house and water them on a minuscule level.

However, there are many interesting and impressive varieties that break this trend. A lot of cacti and succulents can be kept outdoors all year round with the correct care; there are also many varieties that can thrive in shaded and cooler areas of the house.

Most cacti and succulents will need little to no care from now until when their growing season starts (April for most varieties). Cacti and succulents will still thrive even if not watered until April, with most cacti it is recommended to completely refrain from watering until the growing season has started to avoid stretched growth or rot making them great Christmas presents!
