It’s festival time for Plymouth...

Plymouth is going festival crazy over the next few weeks - heralding the start of a long summer of big events in the city.

Plymouth History Festival runs throughout most of May and early June offering a huge range of events at dozens of locations across the city. Everything from pirates to guided walks, from illustrated talks and exhibitions are included in the programme of over 600 events.

We have a feature on the Festival on the centre pages which gives you details of how to find out more.

Meanwhile the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May sees the return of the Plymouth Film Festival at the Arts Centre in Looe Street, while over the same weekend the first-ever Royal William Yard Festival will be taking place.

Seth Lakeman, international star and darling of the South West, is headlining at the Royal William Yard event, which also features a host of other musical attractions and activities.

The busy calendar of events in May also includes Lord Mayor’s Day, the colourful annual spectacular which always attracts a big following in the city centre.

But that’s not all. The ever-popular Flavour Fest is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors over the first weekend in June, while later in the month Plymouth’s spectacular Armed Forces Day returns on June 24.

This year’s family-friendly Armed Forces Day looks set to attract more than 40,000 people as it promises to deliver a whole host of exciting and exhilarating displays, interactive activities, military bands, parades and a not to be missed air show featuring death defying acrobatics.

And then there’s July and August! More of that next month.

Midnight walk goes neon!

St Luke’s Midnight Walk is back this year with a new city centre location, new routes and a neon bang!

Sponsored by Nash & Co Solicitors, the Neon Midnight Walk takes place on Saturday July 1 and organisers at St Luke's Hospice are preparing for thousands of women to take part in the amazing neon themed charity walk across the city.

This year there are three choices of routes - three miles, six miles and 13.1 miles – with party tunes and entertainment to kick start the event at the Piazza on Royal Parade.

Meet Laura Sorensen and Rachel Smith - two friends who decided to pool their shared talent for making nice things for the home by launching a business together.

Laura and Rachel initially set up Gosh and Absolutely three years ago as a part-time venture from their homes. At that time it was a case of attending craft fairs and selling their funky lampshades, lamps, cushions and trinkets via their website.

Things have moved quickly since 2014 and they’re now running the business from their new shop which fronts the Barbican’s Southside Street in The House That Jack Built. The term ‘dream come true’ might be over-used, but in Laura’s case, it’s 100% true: “It’s always been a dream of mine to have a little business, especially on the Barbican,” she said.

“In fact, I’m from Plymouth and ever since I was a child, I’ve had it in my mind one day to have a shop in The House That Jack Built.”

Laura and Rachel moved into the new prime site shop in February, six months after taking the lease of a unit at the back of the popular shopping arcade: “When this one at the front became available we decided to go for it,” said Rachel.

“Being here has already made a big difference. We love watching people in the street outside stop and do a double take when they see all the eye-catching things in the window display.”

The friends have known each other for 12 years, having met when they both worked at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. But it wasn’t until they were chatting in the summer of 2014 that they decided to make something of their creative skills. Rachel explained: “We thought ‘yes, let’s go for it’. We discovered that people liked what we were doing and getting a little shop seemed the natural next step.”

Everything in the shop is made or sourced by Laura and Rachel; you won’t find anything that’s been bought in: “One of the most frequent comments we get from people is ‘oh, it’s so nice to see something that’s a bit different’,” said Laura.

“We’ve got Liberty prints and other prints that are floral and bright, and we also have other fabrics that are unlike anything you’ll ever see in the shops.”

They’ll even work with material customers bring in: “As long as it’s the right dimensions,” said Rachel. “Some people will also come in, look round and say ‘we can’t quite find what’s perfect for what we want’ and we’ll find a fabric for them that will match their room or their existing lamp base. The fabric for a lampshade could also reflect a particular theme chosen by the customer.”

Quite a few of the lamps are great for children’s rooms – and Rachel’s own two youngsters Scarlett and Max help with choosing these designs: “They’re aged nine and seven and they’re advising me all the time about which trends are in at the moment!”

Running the shop requires a lot of juggling, as Laura now works at Plymouth University while Rachel still works parttime at the museum. Between them, they are able to open the shop five days a week – Wednesdays to Sundays – and they plan to extend these days soon.

For now, they’re just thrilled to be on the Barbican: “It’s so exciting for us, having our own shop and meeting so

many people,” said Laura. And, added Rachel: “With all our different colleagues in The House That Jack Built, it’s a perfect environment for us to grow and attract a different audience.

It’s a community here. It’s just a lovely part of the city to be in. What’s not to love?”

Just one final thing: what’s the story behind the name? “We were on the Gordon Sparks show on BBC Radio Devon 10 or 11 years ago, publicising an event at the museum,” explained Rachel. “We were on for about 20 minutes, which we hadn’t expected, and when we listened to it in the office later, we noticed that I kept saying ‘absolutely’ and Laura kept saying ‘gosh’. One of our colleagues commented ‘oh, it’s the gosh and absolutely show’ and it stuck with us after that!”

Plymouth company leads the way with bamboo clothing A Plymouth company specialising in bamboo clothing founded just 11 years ago now boasts two million customers and employs more than 30 staff.

BAM, based in Estover, was launched in 2006 by founder David Gordon and offers a wide range of clothing including baselayers and underwear, gear for fitness and outdoor activities, along with an increasing range of stylish casual clothing.

David stumbled upon the idea of using bamboo as a material for clothes during a trip to China, where the material was widely used.

Inspired by the amazing properties of bamboo, when he returned to the UK he looked at setting up an activewear clothing label using bamboo material.

Clothing gift for St Luke’s BAM recently delivered 14 boxes of brand new children’s clothes to St Luke’s Hospice to help raise funds through the charity’s 30 shops across Plymouth and the rest of Devon and Cornwall.

The company’s general manager, Louise Lauri, said: “We’ve been having a bit of a spring clean in the warehouse! The business is growing steadily, primarily with our adult clothing and we are introducing lots of new ranges, but we only have so much space available.

We found ourselves with boxes of children’s clothing looking for a home.

“All our staff agreed that St Luke’s is such a fantastic local charity and many of us have had links with the hospice at some stage - so it was an obvious choice.”

If you look at artist Jo Larsen Burnett’s pieces of work you probably won’t spot the one thing that they have in common – they’re all made using jelly.

Printmaker Jo has perfected a way of using cooking gelatine for her pieces of art, which can be viewed at two Drawn to the Valley exhibitions being held in Plymouth this spring and summer.

Jo, who lives at Brentor, is chair of Plymouth University Printmakers (Alumni Group) and supports the student-led printmaking society and is also a member of the Drawn to the Valley artists co-operative. She has organised an exhibition of 20 of its printmakers at the university’s Roland Levinsky café from May 4 to 23.

A second Drawn to the Valley printmakers’ exhibition is also being held in the city, at the Theatre Royal Plymouth café gallery, from June 20 to September 16, where between 30 and 40 printmakers, including Jo, will be showing their work.

While her colleagues are experts in more traditional methods of printmaking, Jo specialises in using jelly. Fittingly enough, this part of her printmaking process takes place in the kitchen of her cottage in the shadow of Brentor Church.

But how does it work? And why jelly?

“I loved the offset printing press I used when I was doing my degree at Plymouth University,” Jo explained. “It is an enormous newspaper proofing press with a rubbery roller.

I wanted to print in a similar way at home, but obviously a huge press was out of the question. Finding a way to make the jelly solution work for me was a long process and required a lot of experimenting.”

Jo pours the jelly into a frame on a table in her kitchen to use as a printing press. This latest ‘batch’ of jelly was given 24 hours to cure before she started working on it: “The jelly I make is nowhere near as wobbly as the jelly you’d eat,” said Jo. “I use extra gelatine because it needs to be quite strong

Rockfish Plymouth gets a fresh look – and some brill new offerings!

Plymouth’s award-winning Rockfish seafood restaurant has re-opened after a £200,000 refurbishment in March which has added even more of a wow factor to the harbourside eatery.

The makeover inside includes bigger windows which have opened up sweeping harbour and sea views for all diners and there’s also a new bar area where people can enjoy a coffee or a drink without having to eat.

Outside, Rockfish now has the biggest al fresco dining area in Plymouth where diners can enjoy waiter service, while half of the area is for takeaway customers to also sit and eat their meals with a drink from the bar if they wish.

The kitchen has been kitted out with new equipment to allow a greater choice of cooking methods: it can now serve your seafood fried, traditional grilled, chargrilled or cooked on a plancha range, which is a flat grill.

now has five Rockfish restaurants in Devon – the others are in Brixham, Dartmouth, Torquay and Exmouth – and a sixth is planned for opening in Exeter in early 2018. He also has his Seahorse restaurant in Dartmouth.

Rockfish Plymouth occupies a prime site right next to the The Rockfish Team National Marine Aquarium and is just yards away from Plymouth Fish Market. The views from the new windows take in Sutton Harbour, the Barbican and out towards the Sound, which means you get to see the fishing boats coming and going. It is, says Mitch, a pretty special sight: “You’re sitting here watching the fish come ashore, there’s fish on the grill and the beer’s cold. It’s just the perfect environment.

“Because this was a building that wasn’t designed as a restaurant when we first moved in – it was an office block – we wanted to create some warmth in here but we realised that in doing so we’d actually blocked the views a little bit,” he added.

“We’ve now opened it up so that wherever you’re sitting in the restaurant, you can see the boats moving past."

Mitch says that the investment in Rockfish Plymouth is also a response to what’s happening elsewhere in the city’s vibrant eating out scene: “Plymouth has a mixture of branded restaurants and really good independent restaurants - there are some great restaurateurs in Plymouth doing some fun, funky things,” said Mitch. “It’s got a lovely feel right now. For us, we’re aware that we’re in a city with a really good food scene and you’ve got to keep your game up.

“I also love being part of Plymouth. We’re committed to the city and I especially love it where we are here. I term this as Plymouth’s seafood quarter.”

Born in Weston-super-Mare and now living just up the coast in Devon’s other big fishing port, Brixham, Mitch has always been passionate about the sea and seafood – as long as it’s sustainable.

Rockfish won two awards at the 2017 Seafish National Fish and Chip Awards, for Best Seafood Multiple Restaurant Group and the Good Catch Award for the most sustainable Mitch Tonks restaurant.

“Sourcing sustainable fish and local fish is what we do,” said Mitch. “The whole thing about sitting here in Rockfish is that you’re eating fish that’s come from just out there. I think that’s why it works so well and people like it. And then, with fish like cod and haddock, we buy it from fisheries where it’s sustainable.”

Mitch is keen to encourage more people to try seafood and is looking at plans to have a fish market outside on Saturday mornings where people can buy fresh fish landed at Plymouth fish quay the day before, to take home and cook. Watch this space!

Rockfish Plymouth will be hosting a range of events in the coming months, including live music and special menu nights. It’s also a great place to watch the annual fireworks championships in August. Fish Fridays - where takeaway customers can buy a local variety of fish with chips for £3 is still available on the third Friday of each month, from 5pm to 9pm.

The restaurant is open seven days a week from 12 noon, last food orders at 9.30pm.

When she’s not busy baking cakes Simone Ellis loves nothing more than taking long walks near her home in Hooe.

Simone walks between five and 10 miles a day, every day of the week - but just a few weeks ago she could hardly walk any distance without suffering severe pain.

“I had suffered some pain in my back, knees and feet for 20 years or more, but over time it had just got worse and worse,” said Simone. “I couldn’t put my toes to the ground, which affected my balance, causing me to stoop. This in turn led to pain in my lower back as well as my hips, knees, shins and feet.

“It got to the point earlier this year that if I went for a walk I would end up in agony and would have to take painkillers to cope.”

Simone had put her pain down to arthritis - which runs in her family - but her husband Mark was convinced that Foot Solutions would be able to help her.

“Mark served in the military and a lot of his former colleagues had been helped by Foot Solutions and he kept nagging me to visit them,” she added.

Simone eventually took Mark’s advice and visited the store in Royal Parade in February.

“The member of staff who served me was absolutely brilliant,” said Simone. “She carried out all sorts of tests and recommended custom-made insoles.”

The specially made insoles arrived a couple of weeks later - and the results have been dramatic.

“The insoles took a little while to get used to, but now I don’t have any pain at all ,” said Simone, who runs a cake making business called Kitty Cakes from her home.

“I am now back to walking every day and couldn’t be happier - thanks to Foot Solutions,” she added.

The festival’s programme boasts over 600 events, which includes a range of exhibitions, displays, special events and family entertainment such as the Plymouth Pirate Weekend.

It also features a large number of guided walks, illustrated talks and behind the scenes tours.

Explore venues ranging from libraries, community halls, churches, country houses and historic landmarks.

Councillor Glen Jordan, cabinet member for culture said: “The History Festival has become a well loved fixture on the city’s annual event calendar, with each year providing another opportunity to showcase many of the fascinating stories and characters that have played a part in the story of Plymouth.”

The festival will kick off on Saturday May 6 with ‘Local Studies Day’ - a special event packed with talks and presentations about heritage including the Restoration, the Victorian era and an update about the History Centre project.

Other events during the Festival will include a nationally touring exhibition looking at ‘Britain in the Fifties’ as well as displays and celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Sir Francis Chichester completing his historic solo circumnavigation of the world.

Among walks, talks and exhibitions, the Plymouth History Festival is also offering family entertainment, including the popular Pirate Weekend (May 13 and 14), a children’s treasure trail in Devonport Park (May 14) and a Maker Family Day (May 21) which will be held at Maker Heights over the water.

The popular Green Man event held at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park (May 27 and 28) will also be included in the Festival, where you’ll be treated to music, entertainment, food stalls and a children’s entertainment area, so there’s something for the whole family.

So if you’re into your history, the many stories of Plymouth or you would like an informative but fun day out for all the family, there’s no end of events and activities available through the Festival.

Theatre, dance and comedy at Plymouth Fringe Festival The third Plymouth Fringe Festival - the annual celebration of theatre, dance and live performance - takes place from Monday May 29 to Saturday June 3.

Venues will include the Theatre Royal, Barbican Theatre, The House as well as some less traditional performance spaces. The programme for the festival will feature 30 shows from across the UK, with a fantastic line up of theatre, dance, comedy and live performance.

Some old favourites returning to the festival include Full Pelt Theatre with Wombmates, Nick Hall with Spencer and With Company with Attachment.

Sound of the Sirens join festival line up

Sound of the Sirens are the latest talented musical act to sign up for this year’s inaugural Royal William Yard Festival.

Plymouth Film Festival at the Arts Centre in Plymouth Arts Centre will host the fourth Plymouth Film Festival over the weekend of May 27 to 29.

The Festival was founded in 2013 by two Plymouth University graduates, with the inaugural event held in May 2014 at the Arts Centre. Initially a local festival, it has rapidly grown to include both national and international films alongside some the best South West filmmakers.

Awards are made for best fiction film, best documentary, best South West film, best student film, best comedy, best animation and a grand prix award chosen by the panel of judges from all the nominated films.

The Festival enables those attending to meet the filmmakers and to attend feature presentations with Q&As and high profile panel discussions.

Pemros Dental Practice has plenty to celebrate this year.

Not only is it the 20th anniversary of the St Budeaux surgery, it has also been confirmed as a member of the British Dental Association’s (BDA) Good Practice scheme for the seventh consecutive year.

Being a BDA Good Practice ensures nationally agreed standards are met and a consistent service of quality maintained for patients.

But principal dentist John Hill and the team aren’t resting on their laurels and have recently launched a brand new service for new and existing patients at the independent practice in Pemros Road.

The Patient Care Coordinator service provides an opportunity for people to attend a complimentary consultation with experienced dental care nurse, Sarah Victor. The service is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and is particularly designed for nervous patients or those who for whatever reason haven’t seen a dentist for some time: “People can come in and have a chat about their dental health and explore in a relaxed way what they would like to do,” explained John.

“Some might have particular concerns about their dental health and some might be nervous about coming to the dentist. We introduced the service three months ago and it’s very popular not just with our existing patients but with people seeking dental treatment for the first time in years.

“The service is non-judgmental; it’s purely a discussion over tea or coffee.”

John is joined by two hygienists, three dental nurses and two receptionists. Since the practice was opened in August 1997, John has seen a lot of developments in terms of treatments and knowledge: “It’s certainly a changing environment,” he said. “Dentistry is now more preventionbased and there is a greater awareness that oral health is a window to more general health. We know, for example, that there can be a co-relation between gum problems and a

string of medical conditions including diabetes, strokes and heart disease.

“So we focus on the wider health benefits of seeing a dentist and, in particular, a hygienist. The role of the hygienist is absolutely key because the prevention of gum disease and decay is paramount not only for oral health but in connection with those serious illnesses. We have highly experienced hygienists – Sue has been a hygienist for 30 years – and I recommend that patients really do see a hygienist regularly.

Dentistry isn’t just about fixing things; it more about keeping gums healthy.

“Years ago it was taken for granted that in later life we’d start to lose our teeth or suffer from gum disease. That is now completely avoidable and shouldn’t happen.

Prevention is the key.”

To ensure the most comprehensive treatment for patients, Pemros Dental Practice has an initial fivecomponent consultation, as John explained: “The first component is a chat about past dental experiences and general health. Extra-orally, we then check the jaw, neck and glands. We look for early signs of skin cancers in the facial and neck areas. Intra-orally, we look at the areas inside the mouth, such as the palate and underneath the tongue and check for signs of oral cancer. Finally, we look carefully at the teeth themselves and do a detailed assessment of the gums.

“From these five components, we can discuss a treatment plan and we have a score so that thereafter, we can monitor the ongoing health.”

The practice specialises in treatment for nervous patients and can offer sedation to relax patients while they’re undergoing dental work. Minimal intervention dentistry is used for all patients, to avoid extensive destructive treatment.

Pemros Dental Practice has a membership plan for adults, currently £16.50 a month. Benefits are two dental appointments each year, which include an extensive dental health check, any necessary x-rays, and future planning and advice. Membership also provides two hygienist appointments a year, which include treatment to prevent and reduce gum disease.

The plan brings with it a 20% The Pemros Dental Team reduction in treatment fees, emergency weekend cover and emergency call-out insurance.

A children’s dental prevention plan is also available, currently £14 a month. This includes two dental visits a year, an assessment of the child’s developing teeth, and advice on diet and decay prevention.

The surgery's opening hours are 9am to 5.30pm on Mondays, 9am to 6pm Tuesdays to Thursdays and 9am to 1pm on Fridays. There is easy access to the reception and ground floor surgeries.

Huge interest in landmark eco homes development Work on the development of new homes designed to the highest environmental standards has started on the outskirts of Plymouth.

More than 90 houses and apartments will be built on land previously known as Bickleigh Down.

The development, now called Roborough Park Eco Homes, is being undertaken by Dorset-based ZeroC, an award-winning company at the forefront of sustainable development.

The development - which will include a number of affordable homes - will consist of three, four and five bedroom houses and one and two bedroom apartments, all embracing the latest energy-saving technology.

It will feature contemporary architectural design, highquality materials and fittings and generous room sizes with plenty of storage.

The development has the advantage of being located on the edge of the countryside, close to all the local amenities in Roborough as well as being just four miles from Plymouth City Centre.

A dedicated sales office, manned seven days a week will be located on Roborough Park from the end of May. Roborough Eco Homes will be the largest single new homes development marketed by Mansbridge Balment and underlines the company's strong reputation with property developers.

The previous largest development marketed by the company was in Liskeard and involved 25 units and its most recent development was at Caradon Close in Derriford.

This involved 11 luxury detached bungalows built by Cornwall-based Sunnybanks Homes. Only one of the bungalows currently remains for sale (see story on page 40).

Chris Mervyn, marketing and branch manager at Mansbridge Balment's City Office in Mannamead said: "We were delighted to have been appointed as sole agents to market this landmark development at Roborough.

Chris said that the Roborough development was a further boost for Mansbridge Balment, which has enjoyed a strong start in 2017.

"January was typically quiet, but we have experienced a strong level of sales in February and March," said Chris.

"We have a lot of interest from potential buyers and properties are selling quickly when they come onto the market - providing they are priced sensibly."

He said that there was currently a significant shortage of properties in the £250,000 to £300,000 price range.

"The new homes being constructed at various locations across the city are not really meeting this demand. So my message to homeowners whose properties are likely to be in the £250,000 to £300,000 price bracket is - if you are thinking of selling, get in touch because we have lots of buyers who are keen to make a move."

Chris said that while many estate agents were finding the current market conditions difficult, Mansbridge Balment's ethos of focusing on customer service - rather than cut price commission - was clearly paying off.

Plymouth novelist shortlist for prestigious award An award-winning novelist and academic at the University of Plymouth has been shortlisted for the prestigious Commonwealth Short Story Prize.

Tom Vowler is one of just 21 writers to be selected from 6,000 entries for the honour of the best piece of unpublished short fiction in English.

Tom, an associate lecturer in Creative Writing in the School of Humanities and Performing Arts, submitted his quasi science-fiction work entitled An Enquiry into Morality into the competition.

He said: “It’s nice to have your work recognised by an international audience. Sometimes you are too close to appraise it, but I had a sense that this story might resonate.

I worked on it for six to seven months, and it went through dozens of drafts.”

An Enquiry into Morality is, in Tom’s words, a rare foray into sci-fi for him, set in the near future and concerning 'morality and what makes humans human'. It’s taken from his second collection of short stories, Dazzling the Gods, which will be published later this year.

His debut story collection, The Method, won the Scott Prize and the Edge Hill Readers’ Prize, while his novels What Lies Within and That Dark Remembered Day both received critical acclaim.

An alumnus of the University’s MA in Creative Writing in 2008, and a subsequent PhD on the role of trauma and landscape in fiction, Tom is also editor of the literary journal Short Fiction.

Now in its sixth year the Commonwealth Short Story Prize saw a 50 per cent increase in the number of entries this year, with writers from 49 countries submitting their work.

Plymouth artist’s solo exhibition at the Hidden Olive Plymouth based abstract painter, Martin Bush has just launched his latest exhibition at The Hidden Olive restaurant on Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour.

The exhibition, appropriately entitled 'Hidden Inspiration' has brought an impressive array of Martin's work to the restaurant, which is located at 1, Pinnacle Quay in Sutton Harbour.

Running until May 27 the light and airy restaurant bar offers a relaxed venue to see Martin’s colourful works. As artist in residence at the Royal William Yard, the artist has found a great following but he also has a tradition in exhibiting outside of the yard.

Pots of ideas for your garden Planted pots are a great way to quickly spruce up tired or neglected areas of the garden, and they can be used to hide unsightly features such as manhole covers, drains, sheds or down pipes.

Planted pots can used to add to the drama to front or rear doors. Framing doorways with impressive plants in attractive containers can really instantly improve your home and garden. To create the best possible displays, choose a focal plant that looks good for a long period as the centre piece and underplant with seasonal bedding, bulbs or herbaceous perennials.

When deciding which pots to choose, it is important to consider if the pot is large enough for your plant long term.

If it’s a large plant it can be a hassle trying to repot it in years to come so preferably the larger pot, the better. Make sure any pots you purchase have adequate drainage holes, poor drainage can result in plants drowning or rotting.

Frost-proof terracotta pots are ideal for planting drought tolerant plants as their porous quality means the compost will dry out quickly.

as their weight gives them great stability, while stone pots are excellent for a classical look and are great planted with roses and lavenders.

Plastic pots are cheap and retain moisture well, but will need wrapping with bubble wrap over winter to prevent plant roots from freezing. Fruit trees look good in wooden half barrels and metal pots create a modern look when planted with architectural plants such as phormiums, heucheras and grasses.

Good preparation before planting is the key to having successful pots. The first step is to add extra drainage in the bottom of the pot. This can be an inch layer of gravel, crushed polystyrene or pieces of broken terracotta.

The next step is choosing your compost.

If you are growing annuals, then fill pots with fresh multi-purpose compost or if you’re growing shrubs or longterm plants, use John Innes No.3 compost. For Alpines or plants that like to be on the drier side, used John Innes No.2 compost as it has more drainage in it.

Ericaceous plants such as rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas need acidic soil to thrive so use John Innes Ericaceous compost. To help your pots retain moisture and to help feed your plants mix some water retaining crystals and some slow

After planting, slow release fertiliser can be added to the surface of the compost every six months and this will breakdown into the compost and feed your plants.

We have had a superb new delivery of Olive trees (Olea europaea) in the garden centre from Spain that are superb quality and exceptionally good value (see picture below).

Our mature specimens are easily up to 100 years old or more and have amazing thick trunks with the most incredible cork bark. They are generally considered the kings of the Mediterranean landscape, and will definitely evoke the memories of European holidays.

Their combination of gnarled stems and tough silvery grey-green leaves provide handsome evergreen structure to gardens. Although they can get large in their native range (up to 10 metres or 30 feet), they will rarely get above five metres or 15 feet in the UK, and can be kept even smaller by pruning, which they respond well too.

Grow your olive in the sunniest site possible, ideally south or west facing with some protection from the north and east winds. Olives will tolerate some shade but want at least half a day of sun. Olives love a free-draining soil that will not become waterlogged during winter. Poor sandy soils will benefit from the addition of soil improver or compost and clay soils may require additional grit.

Olive trees can successfully grow in pots for years. Plant them in John Innes No.2 compost. Olive trees can tolerate periods without water, but will need some watering.

Let them dry out between watering, don’t keep them constantly moist.

Feed your olive trees with slow release fertiliser in spring. If your plant has lost leaves in winter and you want to give it a boost, feed it with seaweed feed fortnightly between May and August to ensure the tree stays healthy, vigorous and happy. www.cornerstonevision.com
