It’s a couple of weeks away from the General Election as I’m writing this column.

The party leaders and their cohorts are trekking up and down the country trying to persuade voters one way or another. The Conservatives are defending all three seats in Plymouth with both Oliver Colvile and Johnny Mercer defending narrow majorities.

We won’t know the outcome until June 9, but I’m sure there will be plenty of animated debate in homes across the city over the next few weeks - if our household is anything to go by.

Our 19 year old son is off to start a degree in Brighton in September and he is certainly attracted by some of the Labour policies - particularly those relating to tuition fees. Like tens of thousands of young people he will end up with a five-figure debt by the time he finishes his degree in three years.

It will be the first time he has been able to vote and he is disappointed that so many young people seem uninterested in politics and elections. In the last General Election in 2015 only about 40 per cent of the 3.3 million young people able to vote for the first time, bothered to turn up at the polling stations.

It’s perhaps a sad reflection on our society that many young people feel disempowered and lacking hope or vision for the future.

Let’s hope more first-time voters turn out this time - after all, millions of people down the years have paid the ultimate price to defend our freedom and democratic way of life.

Sorry for the politics, but I can’t remember a time when there was so much discussion and debate (certainly in our house) about the outcome of an election.

Amber launched Liberty Pearl Photography in 2013, naming it after her daughter of the same name who was four years old at the time.

She has now decided to enlarge her team with the appointment of four new associate wedding photographers all of them females.

It means the Plymouth based company is now able to offer the same high levels of customer service to brides and grooms for all dates, both in the UK and internationally. All photography will be overseen and edited by Amber.

In the last four years, Liberty Pearl Photoraphy has gone from strength to strength. Amber’s work is regularly featured in well-known publications and wedding blogs including Love my Dress, Rock My Wedding and Whimsical Wonderland Weddings.

With values which include believing in the importance of marriage, providing a personal service, and capturing a couple’s special day as they dreamt it would be, demand has continued to increase.

Amber said: "I was having to turn so much work away that I decided to look for like-minded professional photographers who could help me meet the demand. "“I’m delighted to be able to expand the team in this way and to be working with so many exceptionally talented women. Not only are each of the associates true professionals, but they understand the ethos of the company; to make each couple’s wedding day the best it can be, and to capture each moment, unobtrusively as their story unfolds.

"While most of my commissions are from couples in Devon and across the rest of the West Country, around a third of my work is national and even international.

Three of the four associate wedding photographers are based in the south west, with the fourth located in the North West.

The four associates are Kate – a working mum who loves to capture weddings beautifully; Philly – a yoga lover who loves photographing organic, beautiful moments that sometimes go unseen; Louise – whose favourite wedding moment is to capture the bride and groom walking down the aisle as man and wife and Claire – whose own wedding was a Pixar inspired Manchester Rooftop ceremony Each of the Associates, who are professional photographers in their own right, went through a rigorous practical interview process before they became part of the Liberty Pearl Photography team.

They each have their reasons for wanting to work with the company but admit to being inspired by Amber, and her vision for excellence within the wedding industry.

Last year, she started a Women in Photography networking conference for like-minded photographers and film makers, to get together and be inspired by other females in the industry. It has gone on to be a resounding success.

Amber Leach added, “When I started my business in 2013, I was a single mum. So I set up my workshops with the thinking that if a single mum with no savings or loans can set up a successful business, then anyone can.

"I love travelling, being creative, meeting new people and making people happy so wedding photography has been my dream job for many years and I love it!"

Pampering has just reached a whole new level at Revive Beauty, following a move to a purpose-built new beauty clinic that’s been designed to offer clients the most relaxing environment possible.

Revive Beauty owner Olwyn Friday had been looking for new premises for 18 months, after outgrowing the previous salon in Glenholt. “Some were a bit sceptical when we said we were moving but they’re now saying ‘well done, it’s fantastic’, which is lovely.

“There’s so much space which creates a feeling of peace and calm. It’s the ambience we were looking for. People can come in, take a deep breath, and step out of everything for a while and relax.

“We have four treatment rooms now which means that we can keep up with the demand. And we’re also now able to offer a wider range of spa treatments.”

It’s no wonder that Revive Beauty keeps on growing - the Facebook page has over 800 fans and all 55 reviews are 5* ratings. Olwyn said: “Our clients tell their friends about us so we’re getting referrals and recommendations all the time.”

Olwyn set up her business in Eggbuckland in 2006. She was working on her own at first before moving to premises in Glenholt in 2012 and expanding to take on a team. With Olwyn at Revive Beauty now are qualified

“We keep on top of what’s happening in the industry,” said Olwyn. “We go to shows in London together and the girls are all keen on progress so are adding to their qualifications and skills all the time.”

This is one of the busiest times of the year for the team, with the holidays and summer wedding season just getting under way: “Everyone wants to look their best and feel good at this time of the year,” said Olwyn. “It’s when people tend to come in for a facial, to give them a lovely healthy glow.”

Hope in Planks helping to carve out a brighter future for orphans

Plymouth couple Chris and Amy Teague have launched a new venture to raise money for an orphanage in Guatemala, after the children stole Amy’s heart when she worked there as a volunteer teacher.

Chris and Amy, from Southway, have set up Hope in Planks (HIP) to design and sell a range of sustainably-sourced oak homeware, with 10% of every sale going to the School of Hope in Huehuetenango in the Central American state.

The school is run by US-based charity, Story International, which also runs an orphanage in the city for young people between the ages of six months and 18 years. The charity established the school to provide an education for the orphanage’s 95 children.

Amy raised £6,000 towards building the school in 2012 before flying out there to work as an English teacher for a year in 2013-14.

The school provides a bilingual education so that the children can speak both Spanish and English, a great advantage when seeking employment when it’s time for them to leave the orphanage at 18.

The money being raised by Hope in Planks will primarily go towards a 12-month transitional programme that helps the youngsters leaving the orphanage to learn the life skills they need to live independently.

“It’s a forward thinking orphanage,” said Amy. “They invest in sustainable projects that help the children by offering them skills and jobs. For example, they roast coffee beans

which are then used in a café they’ve set up in the city centre.

Some of them work in the café as baristas. They also have a water filtration and bottling project which is supplying fresh water that’s affordable to the local community.”

Chris has also done voluntary work for a charity in Central America. He spent three weeks in Honduras, helping local people to set up in business. He shares Amy’s passion for continuing to support the orphanage. Amy said: “My heart is still out there and both of us wanted to do something to help that’s sustainable, which is why we are supporting the transitional programme.

“I know first-hand how charities can struggle to find funding, so we came up with the idea of a business that provides useful and quality products, but also gives back and supports great charitable work at the same time.”

Amy made her way to Guatemala after being shocked by the amount of poverty she witnessed overseas: “I travelled the world after I graduated in 2010. It opened my eyes to poverty and I questioned why I had been so lucky while others had nothing.

“When I returned home from my travels I got a job in marketing and I wasn’t happy. I started to look for a cause I could get involved in, which is where I stumbled on Story International. I did some fundraising for the new school and then went out there to teach English when the opportunity arose.

“I had the most incredible time of my life in Guatemala. It was a true eye opener to the reality of day to day life for these children. It was a

life-changing experience.”

In fact, Amy very nearly didn’t come back at the end of her year: “I fell in love with the children and it was a real battle when it was time to come home because I wanted to stay. But my sister Rebecca had just had a baby girl, Rosie, and I was missing them.

“I think it was meant to be because almost as soon as I’d got back I met Chris!” Amy and Chris are both 28, Plymouth-born and graduates of Plymouth University, where Chris studied Economics and Amy did a degree in Business with Spanish.

The couple married last year and Chris is very much a part of the Hope in Planks venture. All the items are made from sustainable FSC-certified oak. Designed by Chris and Amy, the pieces are made by craftsmen at The Wooden Workshop in Tiverton.

“We wanted to make them ourselves but we found these guys who are great,” said Chris. “But we design the products

and finish them with varnish and the HIP branding. Everything is made in Devon, it’s from an ethical, sustainable source and it’s for a good cause.”

The couple run Hope in Planks in their spare time as they both work full-time – Chris at Brittany Ferries and Amy as a debt coach at Christians Against Poverty.

So do they think they’ll ever get the chance to go to the orphanage and school together some time? “Definitely!” says Amy. “We’d love that. We both feel strongly that we want to make a difference in our lives.”

Plymouth amputee joins mission to retrace Cockleshell Heroes raid Former Plymouth Royal Marine Vince Manley who lost both legs during the Iraq conflict, is joining other amputee servicemen to take part in a special mission to mark the 75th anniversary of the 'Cockleshell Heroes' raid in the Second World War. Vince was seriously injured in 2006 when his vehicle was blown up by an IED. He underwent 12 hours of surgery, during which his heart stopped three times. Both his legs were amputated below the knee.

During his long road to recovery Vince has taken part in a number of physical challenges to show what is possible for amputees.

He is one of eight amputee servicemen from the Pilgrim Bandits charity who will retrace the steps of the brave special forces which were immortalised in the famous film Cockleshell Heroes, portraying the war-ending mission of Operation Frankton.

The Gironde river expedition, the second undertaken by the charity and its amputee soldier patrons, will commemorate the dangerous kayak mission that was widely recognised and credited by Winston

The commemorative event was taking place from May 27 to June 2 with the eight injured servicemen being joined by former Wren Sarah Holmes, the great niece of George Sheard, one of the original commandos involved in the raid. They will retrace the extraordinary journey from the Bay of Biscay up the fast flowing waters of the Gironde Estuary and river to the busy port of Bordeaux.

Operation Frankton was a strategic attack on German shipping in the French port of Bordeaux in December 1942, carried out by a small unit of canoe-sculling Royal Marines.

The four canoe crews were dropped 10 miles off the mouth of the Gironde estuary in the Bay of Biscay and spent five nights sleeping during the day - to cover the 60 miles upstream to Bordeaux.

With the arsenal of limpet mines they had carried, the commandos successfully destroyed two German naval trawlers, 12 E-Boats, 12 patrol boats and six minesweepers.

Sadly, just two men survived the mission. Eight were executed by the Germans and two more died of hypothermia.

The Pilgrim Bandits expedition is designed to honour all the fallen

of WW2 and commemorate the huge achievement and the war-winning contribution made by all those that took part in Operation Frankton. At the same time the adventure is designed to provide a demanding, confidence-building excursion for severely injured serving soldiers, veterans, and a small number of fee-paying members of the public who are contributing to the cost of the expedition.

Pilgrim Bandits Charity was established by a small group of Special Forces veterans in 2007 with the sole aim of using their unique training and experience to help and inspire wounded soldiers to live life to the full.

The mantra ‘Always a Little Further’ is core to the charity’s attitude, whether working with amputee men and women from the services directly or by utilising their experiences to inspire and encourage young people and children. Pilgrim Bandits don’t do sympathy, but offer the rewards of belonging to a team, encouragement, belief and the power of humour over pain.

Pilgrim Bandits’ primary aim is to help those in need directly, with no compromise. Soon, those who needed help become those that give it.

By pushing injured men and women into physically and mentally demanding situations that they would not have dreamed possible; kayaking extraordinary distances, climbing mountains, jumping from aircraft, running races, trekking across inhospitable terrain, self confidence is restored and self-belief instilled – Always a Little Further.

Pilgrim Bandits pushes those that have already endured so much to go beyond endurance – to embrace life again and in so doing inspire others.

Some view Pilgrim Bandits as a forces charity but it is a charitable force, bringing support, help and adventure to injured personnel from both the Armed and Emergency services.

How herbs and spices proved a life changer for Greedy Fox creator Jamie When chef Jamie Fox was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was forced to give up his job at Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s River Cottage, it was like the bottom had fallen out of his world.

From doing the job he loved, he was now exhausted all the time, confined to bed for days on end. Prescribed a cocktail of 15 different types of medication – including one usually used for cancer patients – Jamie feared that at the age of 34, his working days were over.

The debilitating condition – which attacks the central nervous system – was diagnosed in 2011. Its severity, together with the side effects of the medication, led to a lengthy period of depression. Jamie, always fit and healthy before, went from 12 stone to 17 stone. Jamie and his wife Gemma became increasingly concerned about the deterioration of his health and at how the medications were making him feel worse, not better.

Eventually, after three years, Jamie went back to what he knew: food. He researched which foods were said to be good for the condition and tried them all out until he found the ones that worked for him. At the same time, he cut out processed foods and virtually all animal-based products.

The result? Jamie is now back to 12 stone, loving life again, and with Gemma is running their hugely successful business, The Greedy Fox Company. The couple set up the

business just over a year ago in May 2016 and they’re now taking orders from all over the UK. Jamie has created a range of eight seasonings – with more to be added this summer – using the spices and herbs which helped him to recover to the point where he’s now taking just one prescribed medication daily.

For Jamie, it’s like he’s got his life back again: “I’d only been working at River Cottage at the Royal William Yard for six months when I was diagnosed,” he said. “I’d had some symptoms when I was in my 20s but didn’t realise they were related to MS. But the symptoms I had when I was at River Cottage were so bad that I physically couldn’t work. I had extreme fatigue, headaches and double vision. I went to the opticians and they knew straight away. I saw a neurologist and the lesions on my brain were clear.”

MS is a progressive condition, but not in all cases. Diseasemodifying medication is offered to control the severity and potentially prevent future relapses: “But they just made me feel like a zombie,” said Jamie. “I felt like I had flu six days a week, with one good day a week, and that lasted for six months.

“The final straw came when we were on holiday in Bulgaria and I couldn’t eat anything without being ill. So when we got home, I started my research into which foods might help.

It was a case of trial and error for six months and I found that a vegan diet worked the best. I like lean chicken and pork though, so I haven’t cut meat

out entirely. But apart from that I pretty much avoid animal products and processed foods.

“I eat wholefoods, vegetables and lots of healthy herbs and spices which are also really tasty. Because of MS I had lost my passion for cooking but with the new diet, I got it back again.”

When Jamie first started trying out the herb and spice blends, he was putting them into all the family’s meals. Their children – Lilly, 10, and Noah, 5, loved the flavours: “So we thought ‘they’re tasty and they’re healthy … why don’t we set up a business so other people can enjoy them’?” said Gemma.

The eight flavours are Caribbean, Cajun, Mediterranean, Mexican, Moroccan, Smokey Steak, Burger and BBQ. They’re made 100% of herbs and spices, although none are too spicy.

The blends can be used as a rub, to sprinkle or to mix with either oil or water. And they work in any form of cooking.

Chinese 5-spice and Goan are being added to the range in June or July, and a pocket-sized hot and spicy BBQ mix will also be ready for summer, especially for the guys to bring out and use when they’re manning the BBQ! The 40g pots retail at £3.50 each or five for £15. Each pot makes 4-5 meals.

For inspiration, Jamie has produced over 100 recipes which are on the website. Customers are sending in their recipes, too: “They send us photos to show how they’ve used the seasoning,” said Gemma.

“The biggest surprise that we hadn’t expected is that slimmers all around the country are using our range because they work well with all well-known slimming plans. It’s so exciting for us to see people enjoy the seasonings so much that they keep on re-ordering,” she added. Much of the recipe sharing takes place on the Facebook page, which has almost 1,700 fans.

Jamie and Gemma have just had some good news, having been approved for a small business loan through a Government scheme. It will allow them to buy a gazebo to attend fairs and will pay for a new website. Customers currently go online to order the seasonings, although locals can collect them or have them delivered by South Devon firm, Pretty Local. Soon, however, it’s hoped the range will be available at small shops and cafes in the region.

Jamie still has setbacks. He suffers from spasms and bouts of ‘MS hug’ where he feels like he’s being squeezed so tightly he can hardly breathe: “But because I work from home now, if I’m having a bad day I can just do some food research. I’m still able to do something, which is very important to me.”

Plymouth Symphony Orchestra’s summer concert features well-loved classical music.

The concert is on June 21 at Plymouth Guildhall, starting at 7.30pm. The Orchestra will perform the same concert at Sterts Theatre, Liskeard three days before.

The Orchestral Favourites include Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture, Finlandia by Sibelius and Beethoven’s Symphony No 6, known as the Pastoral, which is the main work of the programme.

Beethoven completed the work in 1808 in Vienna and the movements are evocatively named with titles such as ‘Scene by the Brook’, ‘Thunderstorm’ and ‘Shepherd’s Song’.

Although Beethoven spent much of his time in the city, he loved to be in the countryside and himself said ‘No one can love the country as much as I do. For surely woods, trees and rocks produce the echo which man desires to hear.’

The symphony offers a very different glimpse into the world of the more familiar Beethoven of the monumental, ferocious 5th Symphony. The meandering through the countryside with the lazy slow movement, the babbling brook and the storm – along with the rustic dances and beautiful bird calls, take us into another world. Beethoven himself actually indicates the bird calls in his score – the nightingale is the flute, the quail is the oboe and the two clarinets represent the cuckoo.

The concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s fantasy overture Romeo and Juliet, inspired by the Shakespeare play of the same name.

It’s central love theme is very familiar to us, as it is frequently used in romantic scenes from film and television. In traditional sonata form there are two dramatically contrasting themes between family strife and lovers’ passion which assures a fierce conflict.

Orchestral classics at Guildhall concert when Spartacus frees his wife Phrygia and the lovers celebrate. This passionate melody later became one of our favourite TV themes – for the Onedin Line in the 1970s and 80s and for those who do not remember that – more recently in Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006).

Sibelius’ tone poem Finlandia was composed in 1899 for a political demonstration in Helsinki and achieved sweeping popularity, national pride and personal fame for the composer – which surprised no one more than Sibelius. This colourful, richly scored ‘anthem to freedom’ with its snarling and thunderous opening also boasts one of music’s great melodies.

The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is one of the longest-established orchestras in the country and attracts many distinguished soloists, with Ralph Kirshbaum, Guy Johnston, Tasmin Little, Joanna MacGregor, Michael Petrov and Martin James Bartlett amongst the performers to play with the orchestra.

Plymouth Devils host big speedway event One big date for the diaries of Plymouth fans will be Thursday July 6 when the club stage the prestigious British Under 19 Championships.

The club, saved from extinction in the winter by Mark Phillips and Laurence Rogers, have been awarded the meeting by the BSPA. Co-Promoter Phillips is highly pleased with the news, “ When tracks were asked if they would stage the event Laurence and I discussed it and decided to apply for it.

We knew we would be up against other more established promoters but we have faith in what we are doing.”

Rogers believes it is a big challenge for the club. “To be given this meeting is a big feather in our cap and we are determined to ensure it will be a total success. Naturally the line-up will not be known for some time but we are hoping that we will have several Devils riders in the lineup .

“We will have at least three under 19’s in our side in Callum Walker, Henry Atkins and Saul Bulley so we must be in with a chance of seeing some, if not all, of them included.”

Saltash Regatta has so much to offer Saltash Regatta is one of the most colourful events held in South East Cornwall and is a must visit event. It takes place this year on June 17 and 18.

Gig racing, hosted by Saltash-based Caradon Pilot Gig Club, is run to the highest standard, creating a stunning visual backdrop on the Tamar, for all spectators enjoying land based events. On the river there is also sailing, canoeing and two special events – the wild swim and the cardboard boat race. This has to be seen!

Saltash Regatta is not just about water sports, there is so much more ashore to keep everyone in the family happy and very entertained. There will be an array of food offers, stalls selling a variety of local produce, a bar and a programme of musical entertainment – something for everyone. Children are catered for, with inflatables, entertainment and more.

Spirit of the Roaring Twenties to be revived at Words and Music Festival

The music of Noel Coward and the boundless energy of the Charleston will be among the highlights as the spirit of the ‘Roaring Twenties’ comes alive once again.

Almost a century after its sense of fun and vibrancy first captivated audiences, the entertainment of the 1920s will be showcased during the 2017 Words and Music Festival which takes place between June 6 and 10.

It will include performances by celebrated cabaret duo Kit Hesketh-Harvey and James McConnel and soprano Jeni Bern and a Roaring Twenties tea dance.

Organised by Peninsula Arts at the University of Plymouth, the festival will feature a range of events staged at venues across the city.

Simon Ible, director of music for Peninsula Arts and the festival’s artistic director, said: “First and foremost, this festival is all about having fun. With a great line-up of events and performers, it will bring the entertainment which captivated audiences almost a century ago to life. By the time it finishes, I am sure the music and dancing synonymous with the 1920s will have a new generation of fans.”

Highlights of the festival include:

• A musical tribute to Noel Coward and his legacy from cabaret duo Kit Hesketh-Harvey and James McConnel, who will pay homage to ‘The Master’ by performing many of his enduring songs, as well as some lesserknown gems; • The Roaring Twenties Gala Concert, The ArtDeco Band performed by the Peninsula Arts Sinfonietta and soprano Jeni Bern, and featuring works

by American composers George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern and British composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and EJ Moeran. Jeni Bern recently starred in Opera North’s production of Cole Porter’s 20s classic Kiss me Kate • The Roaring Twenties Tea Dance, taking place in the ballroom at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel and featuring music from the ArtDeco Band led by Steve Chisholm and Tango dancing from Plymouth-based dance school Tango para el Alma.

Until June 3 BRITAIN IN THE FIFTIES: DESIGN AND ASPIRATION The Council House, Armada Way See a vision of the country from 60 years ago as we explore the history of post-war design in this nationally touring exhibition organised by Compton Verney. The 1950s was a time when Britain emerged from a period of austerity and rationing after the Second World War. This exhibition looks at all aspects of design from that decade both inside and outside the home, with a diverse range of objects including furnishings, fabrics, ceramics, cutlery, magazines, machinery and the iconic Vespa. It will also include objects and moving images from Plymouth’s collections.

Step over the cobbles and back in time with new theatrical walking tours

A series of family-friendly theatrical walking tours have hit the cobbled streets of Plymouth’s Barbican.

‘Ropewalks’ leads audiences around some of the area’s most historic locations offering a series of entertaining encounters along the way.

Audiences get the chance to follow in the footsteps of some of the most colourful characters from the Barbican’s past. They also get to discover some of the stories that connect Plymouth with the rest of the world.

The content for the tours has been inspired by true events with historical research helping to inform the script, characters and costumes.

Writer Jon Nash and a team of young professionals have used objects, documents, photographs and film from the Museum and Art Gallery’s and the city’s archival collections.

They have also undertaken research trips to the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre, Mayflower Museum and South West Film and Television Archive.

‘Ropewalks’ is a Plymouth History Centre event, delivered in partnership with the Barbican Theatre and promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s History Festival.

Performances are aimed at anyone aged eight years and above and are ideal for families as well as history lovers.

‘Ropewalks’ performances will feature spectacular costumes designed and made by ‘World of Wearable Art’ finalist Hannah McArthur. Hannah recently graduated from Plymouth College of Art with a BA (Hons) in Costume Production and Associated Crafts.

Performances of ‘Ropewalks’ take place on selected dates in June and August. They start at 11.30am and 2.30pm and last for up to 60 minutes. They’re Breaking Through at Plymouth College of Art

Every summer, Plymouth College of Art transforms its cutting edge workshop and studio complex spaces into a dynamic, college-wide public showcase for new work in art, craft, design and digital media.

Featuring art from the UK’s most exciting fresh creative talent, the Degree Shows are free and open to the public from June 10 to June 22.

Showcasing work from students across the college’s Undergraduate and Masters programmes, Plymouth College of Art’s Degree Shows 2017 are an opportunity to see work created by the college’s community of global thinkers, ready to make their mark on the world.

With open doors across all the college’s working studios, it’s also a chance to see world class facilities such as FabLab Plymouth and the £8 million dedicated crafts workshops for ceramics, glass and metal work.

An eclectic range of mediums, both modern and traditional, will be exhibited across the college, including film, photography, fine art installation, fashion design, game arts, illustration, glassworks, ceramics, animation, 3D printing and much more.

The 2017 Degree Shows campaign is titled Breaking Through, designed by third year BA (Hons) Graphic Design students Sam Cross and Josh Fathers, who are also both part of the college’s in house design group, known as The Agency.

New wet room is a dream come true for Pam

Plymouth couple Paul and Pam Tuckwell faced a dilemma when Pam's medical condition was severely affecting her every day living.

Pam, who is 60 this year, has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis since she was just 25. Over the years the condition has increasingly affected her mobility and movement, making even life's simple tasks a real challenge.

They had lived in a semi-detached home in Plympton for nearly 30 years, but decided last year that Pam's quality of life would be greatly improved if they lived in a home which provided easier access and movement - such as a bungalow.

Pam said: "We really loved our time in Plympton, but life was getting more and more difficult. I needed a stair lift to get upstairs and access to the garden wasn't easy.

"We found a bungalow we liked in Crownhill and moved in last August. I wasn't sure how I would feel leaving so many friends behind, but within no time it just felt like home."

Paul took early retirement 18 months ago so that he could become Pam's full time carer after spending over 35 years as a driver at the dockyard.

Paul said: "We needed a new home with easier access for Pam and buying the bungalow was the first step. We could see that the garden had the potential to be made very accessible for Pam and commissioned that work straight away.

"We also quickly realised that the bathroom needed a complete makeover to make life easier for Pam." They contacted a number of companies including Steve Short at Dream Bathrooms. Paul said: "We had seen Steve's advertisement in the magazine and decided to give him a call.

"He visited us a number of times to talk over possible solutions and how best to help meet Pam's needs. He could

not have been more helpful."

Steve talked through the options available and it was agreed that a wet room with easy access for Pam would be the ideal solution.

Steve said: "Pam's disability meant that we had to come up with a solution that avoided any steps or lips when we created the wet room. We also had to carry out a lot of work to ensure the fall in the floor level was sufficient for the water to drain away."

The work involved Steve and the Dream Bathrooms team completely gutting the old bathroom, removing the bath, toilet and sink before completely replastering and installing a new floor, complete with slip resistant floor tiling.

The toilet and wash basin were also relocated to make them more accessible for Pam. The new 100 sq ft wet room features stylish mystic grey ceramic wall tiles and matching grey porcelain floor tiles and rain head shower with separate rinse attachment.

A new wall-hung vanity unit with marble top and comfort height toilet were also installed.

The Dream Bathrooms team carried out the work over a 10 day period in April.

Pam said: "The whole team were really friendly and really helpful. They asked for my views throughout the whole process and came up with lots of helpful advice. I'm really pleased with the end result."

Paul added: "It has all worked really well. We are delighted with what Steve and his team have achieved. The great thing is that they do everything from start to finish, even down to painting and decorating and removing all the rubbish.”

Sherford milestone as first residents move in Sherford has officially welcomed its first residents, with two sets of homeowners having moved to the new community, marking one of the biggest milestones in the development’s two-decade history.

Receiving the keys to their brand-new homes, the new residents were welcomed by members of the Sherford Consortium over the bank holiday weekend.

Sharing their excitement on moving day, the new residents, Eliana and Chris, began their new lives as the founding members of the new community.

One resident, Chris Taylor has just moved into a two-bedroom coach house, relocating from Elburton. He commented: “It is so exciting to be one of the first people to live at Sherford! We’ve heard lots about the development and kept seeing it in the newspaper.

It is fantastic to be making a fresh start in a new community and it will be amazing to watch it grow – especially when I get to meet my neighbours.”

Moving in on the same day into a new three bedroom Sherford home, Eliana Griffiths said: “I have been looking for a house for a long time, and then I discovered Sherford.

Plymouth’s Alyssa shortlisted for top sports award

A talented sportswoman from Plymouth is among four local finalists in the prestigious Devon Sports Awards.

Nineteen year old Alyssa Oates from Plymouth Underwater Hockey Club is the only Plymouth finalist in the Community Sports Performer of the Year, the largest of the eight categories in the awards.

Alyssa, who attends Marjon University, has represented Great Britain in the U19 and U23 Underwater Hockey teams and was named Great Britain U19 Player of the Year in 2014. She is now hoping to compete at the 2017 World Championships in Australia and has launched a Crowdfunding appeal to raise funds for the trip.

To mark the 20th year of the awards there are some exciting new categories and the finalists include people from all aspects of community sport from coaches and volunteers to sportspeople from a really diverse range of sports.

High-flying luxury soars to new levels All sectors of the travel industry are constantly trying to surprise and entice us with new ideas and innovations.

Over the years, we have seen cruise ships getting larger and offering passengers an enormous range of facilities and entertainment.

We have witnessed certain brands of hotel become more exclusive as they focus on niche markets and we have seen a host of airlines offer upgraded premium class products in an attempt to attract the bigger spenders who ensure the viability of many services. This month, I’d like to make you aware of two such offerings in different areas of the travel industry, which both providers hope will significantly boost sales.

I have been fortunate enough to fly with numerous airlines, both during my travel industry career and earlier childhood.

In fact, I can still recall some of my first exciting trips on DanAir Comet’s and Spantax Coronado’s travelling to Alicante and Palma from Exeter.

Although many of my journey’s have typically been on the standard Boeing and Airbus types, I did get to experience Concorde and more recently I have travelled on the massive Airbus A380 with Emirates and Etihad Airways.

Despite the number of journeys I have taken, I would still never consider myself to be a 'natural' flyer but the more modern aircraft are definitely quieter, more comfortable and have undoubtedly improved the overall flying experience.

Another issue that is often overlooked is that the more modern engines have a considerably improved impact on the environment, which has to be positive for all of us.

On medium and long haul flights from the UK (to destinations beyond Europe) most airlines now offer three or four different products or cabin classes. These usually

comprise Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First with fare levels increasing with each class, as you would expect.

You exit the living room through a hallway, which leads to the bedroom where you will find a giant double bed, perfect for a good night’s sleep or for watching more films on an additional 27 inch TV. Before landing, you can freshen up in the en-suite shower room with a full height shower, bathrobes and a hairdryer are also provided. The cost of travelling in this luxurious 'accommodation' begins at £17,500 for two passengers flying from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi or £26,000 for two passengers travelling from London to Sydney via Abu Dhabi.

On the same aircraft type, Etihad also offer first class apartments, which feature private cabins with a sleeping/ living area that can be occupied by individuals or linked together for families. Airlines are very aware that they need to be proactive in offering the very best facilities on long haul flights to capture a developing market of high spending travelers and Etihad have certainly raised the bar in this respect so I would expect other carriers to follow.

It is not only the airlines that are expanding their product range and increasing service levels. I am sure you have read parts of my previous articles specifically about how cruise ships have evolved in terms of technology, available facilities and above all, size.

I was fortunate enough to travel on the 'Harmony of the Seas' last year, which at the time was the largest cruise ship in the world. However, it’s owners Royal Caribbean, have already surpassed this achievement by announcing the imminent launch of 'Symphony of the Seas', which will be capable of carrying a staggering 6,500 passengers.

With each new cruise ship that is built or converted, cruise lines are trying to feature innovative, alternative attractions that make their vessel and their product stand out. Celebrity Cruises have an authentic grass lawn for picnics, Royal

Caribbean ships offer water parks, slides, zip wires, bumper cars and even a London Eye observation capsule.

Not to be outdone or left behind, Norwegian Cruise Line have just announced a new ship, 'The Norwegian Joy' specifically designed for the Chinese cruise market. It will feature the world’s first onboard Ferrari branded race track! This unprecedented facility will be located on the top deck of the ship and enable up to ten drivers at a time to race each other at speeds of up to 40mph.

The Norwegian Joy is a relatively small ship carrying only 3,800 passengers but is still large enough to accommodate this along with other attractions such as hovercraft bumper cars, an interactive virtual reality theatre and a two-man water slide that allows guests to race each other in inner tubes! All of this simply leaves us wondering what next? I will keep you updated but it’s fair to say that nothing will surprise me.

These roses will grow on you!

So here we in June and its rose season again. Thanks to the dry spring we’ve had, most of our roses are looking good and not suffering with blackspot, mildew or rust. Let’s hope they stay that way!

We have an abundance of rose in bloom in the garden centre right now in a whole host of colours, shapes and sizes. The air is filled with beautiful perfume. We have all the traditional and favourite varieties, as well as a few new ones.

The recent trend for roses is to have open flowers, so that they can be pollinated by bees. These roses are derived from Rosa Persica, a native of the Middle East. This thin, prickly shrub is considered a weed of cultivated land and is collected as firewood.

It has one unique feature – a dark central red blotch on its golden yellow flowers and it has been the Holy Grail of rose breeders for the last 40 years to somehow transmit this feature into a modern healthy repeat flowering cultivar.

That work is coming to fruition and some exciting, excellent new hybrids are now coming onto the market. The varieties we have are Angel Eyes, which has pink flowers with a red centre and Eyes For You, which has pale pink, almost white flowers that have an attractive mauve-purple blotch in the centres.

Eye of the Tiger has golden yellow flowers with a burnt orange centre and For Your Eyes Only, which was rose of the year 2015, has apricot orange flowers that fade to pink as the flower ages and a red centre. Smiling Eyes has apricot flowers with a red centre and a delicate scent.

disease resistance, repeat flower in abundance, will grow to a height and spread of one metre (3ft) and will do well in a pot or in the ground.

Roses will grow in any soil, but they will perform better in a sandy soil. If you have clay soil it is best to dig it over and then break it up with a good quality compost or well-rotted farmyard manure. Mix it thoroughly.

Roses like a sunny position, so choose a site that gets at least 50 per cent of the day in the sun. If you are replacing old roses with new roses remove as much of the old soil as possible and replace with soil that hasn’t grown roses before (the old soil will grow anything else apart from roses).

Dig in Rootgrow when planting, it has a natural product called mycorrhizal fungi that promotes stronger, healthier and faster root growth. This in turn will allow better feeding, more resistance to pest and diseases and better drought tolerance.

Roses that are container grown can be planted at any time of year as long as the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged. Dig a hole that is slightly bigger than the pot it came in and place a handful of bone meal at the bottom of the hole, mixing in with the soil.

Water the rose in its pot thoroughly before planting. Remove from its pot and place the rose in the ground and backfill with soil that has been enriched with good quality compost, manure or a rose and shrub compost.

Make sure the graft of the rose (the knot that connects the bush part to the roots) is at, or slightly above soil level.

Water well.

prune and an autumn prune. For bush roses (patio, floribunda, shrub and hybrid teas) the spring prune should prune out a third of the original size in a frost-free period from midFebruary to mid-March. Prune out any weak, weedy, damaged, dead or diseased growth. In the autumn, roses can be trimmed back after they finish flowering in November to stop wind-rock and root damage.

As for the pruning itself, use a pair of clean, sharp secateurs and always cut the stem above an outward face bud. Make the cut at a 45 degree and sloping away from the centre of the plant. This will ensure that any rain water will run off the stem onto the ground instead of the crown of the plant. Try to keep all of the growth on the edge of the bush keeping the centre clear. Aim for a goblet shape. This will allow plenty of light and air to flow through the centre of the plant, which will reduce pest and diseases.

To help reduce pests and diseases, it is a good idea to under plant your roses. Under planting your roses with companion plants is a great thing to do for a number of reasons, it provides a natural pest and disease control, it provides a longer season of interest and provides contrast in shape texture, colour and scent with your roses.

Roses grown with companion plants have been known to show more vigour and better health, than roses grown on their own. Not only can companion plants repel destructive insects and bugs, but they will also attract beneficial insects too.

Salvias, Nepeta and Lavender are the best plants to plant with roses. They will not only deter pest and diseases, but they will deter rabbits and salvias have been known to deter fungus infects. They are easy to look after and require very little maintenance once they have established. When you first plant them, water and feed them well in their first year and after that, they will need feeding in the spring and deadheading when required.

Excellent, easy to grow, attractive and long flowering varieties that also make great companions for roses are Agapanthus, Kniphofia, Geums, Lupins, Gaillardias, Rudbeckias, Digitalis, Echinaceas, Monardas, Verbenas, Knautias, Veronicas, Achilleas, Sedums, Erysimums, Lupins, Digitalis and Gauras.
