Now let’s see a fair deal for city Well, now we know the result of the General Election. And for Plymouth and the rest of the country it looks like we’re in for a bumpy ride in the months ahead.

Last month I highlighted the fact that so few young people had voted in the 2015 General Election, hoping that more would make an effort this time round. It was good to see that with this General Election more than seven out of 10 young people cast their vote.

Commentators reflected that this surge of young votes undoubtedly had a big impact on the final result.

That would certainly appear to be the case in Plymouth where Labour’s Luke Pollard secured a near 17 per cent increase in votes to take the Sutton and Devonport seat with a suprisingly large majority. We wish him and Johnny Mercer, who was re-elected for the Conservatives in Plymouth Moor View with a much bigger majority than in 2015, best wishes for the future.

It is hoped that they can use their energy and influence to ensure that Plymouth gets a better funding deal from central Government in key areas such as education, public health and transport where the city appears to be short-changed so often.

Anyway, that’s enough of politics (until the next election!)

ART MATTERS

Artist Shari’s inspiration comes from nature Saltash artist, Shari Hills was born in Blackpool, moved to Hertfordshire and arrived in the South West as a teenager. Ever since she can remember she has always loved wildlife, nature and animals of all kinds.

When speaking of growing up, she said: “My Dad spent a lot of time down at the river with his boat and my mum, Suzanne Jones, greatly influenced me and encouraged my artistic gift.

“She has always been a keen gardener and was frequently Art Matters painting. She took lessons in with Kerry Cole watercolour and has become an accomplished artist in her own right.

“We would go away together for a few nights at residential art classes. It has been so nice to share the experience and creative journey together. We both like quite loose ‘wet onto wet’ watercolour. Mum enjoyed painting flowers and I tended to do animals. Mum now does harbours and nautical things in mixed media.”

Shari and her mum Suzanne have recently exhibited together at Ashtorre Rock Community Centre in Saltash but if you missed getting along to that and would like to see Shari’s work, ‘Drawn to the Valley Open Studios’ is the place to go.

At the beginning of September, she will be with three other artists in The Tamar Valley Centre in Drakewalls (a little place just outside of Gunnislake.)

It is on for nine days from September 2 to 10 and covers two weekends. There will be quite a lot of her ceramics on display as well as her paintings. Expect to see really attractive small dishes all inspired by British wildlife, alongside some lovely clocks.

In keeping with her love of the great outdoors, Shari has recently become a joint leaseholder of a 40 acre ancient woodland. She enthusiastically told me: “It is so lovely and perfect for artistic purposes. I often go into the wood to sketch and find inspiration. I’ve just held a session with a small group of five people, painting bluebells.

“Having this woodland is ideal because my partner has a community interest company called ‘Greenwood Music’ where they work with fresh, unseasoned, native, sustainable wood, to make simple musical instruments.”

Some readers may be interested to know that Shari runs several art classes in different locations in and around Plymouth. She said: “I find the classes very rewarding. I love teaching. Some of my students have been with me for years and others are just starting out.

“Thinking up new ideas for the students is very therapeutic and it feeds back into my work by keeping everything fresh.”

If you would like to find out more about Shari’s classes, they are currently held in Keyham, Saltash, Plympton St Maurice and Horrabridge. She also demonstrates for various art groups and art societies.

Plymouth City Market’s new arrival is hot stuff!

Tracey Medley really hit the spot when she named her new chilli business in Plymouth City Market ‘Some Like It Hot’ because it seems the people of Plymouth just can’t get enough of the stuff!

Since opening her stall in February, the artisan produce has been flying off the shelves as chilli lovers indulge in all things chilli pepper.

From the mildest to the most fiery chilli in the world, and from sauces, mixes and mayo to jams, chutneys and chocolate, if you’re a chilli fan, then this particular corner of the market is just for you. And it looks as though many of you have already found it: “Chilli is really big at the moment. People just love it,” said Tracey, who lives in Laira.

“I initially got the stall to focus on West Country foods but I found that everyone was going for the chilli produce so I decided to specialise and I’m glad I did. I had an idea in my mind that it would take some time to become known but it has really taken off.”

Tracey got the idea for the business because she has always been interested in quality foods and makes her own jams, marmalades and chutneys.

And, after suffering serious injuries in a car crash three years ago, she needed a job that she could physically do: “I suffered head injuries, a broken neck and a broken arm and I now have a titanium plate in my neck and arm.

“I’d worked in a number of different fields up until the accident but there are some things I can’t do now. So this is an entirely new venture for me.”

Tracey sources much of her stock locally from Dartmoor Chilli Farm and South Devon Chilli Farm, and she makes chutneys, jams and marmalades under her own Some Like It Hot brand. Also popular with customers is Faraday’s Tasty range, which includes Weeper Reaper and Wasabi Mayo: “I love what they do,” said Tracey. “They’re based in the Lake District and the guy who runs it is a former chef. He brings the flavours out brilliantly.”

If you’re not sure which chilli is right for your taste buds, you can give them a try with the testers.

But be warned … some are very, very hot! “The Carolina Reaper is the world’s hottest chilli and I don’t let everyone taste them!” said Tracey. “Children are definitely not allowed. But I have the mildest chillies too.”

And, says Tracey, whichever sauce you choose you can always turn the heat up and down to suit your tastes: “Chillies are so versatile. You can make your dish a bit milder for those who prefer a little less fire and then you can add an extra bit of sauce at the end of your cooking just for you.

“You can also mix the sauces with some natural yoghurt to create a lovely dip.

“Some people just love the heat, but true ‘chilli heads’ savour the different flavours,” added Tracey. “For example,

habanero chillies are fruity, while some chillies give you an immediate heat hit and others develop their heat gradually.

“My customers enjoy talking about the different types of chilli and how they work. Some chillies hit the back of the mouth, some hit the front. And I get asked a lot of questions from people wanting advice about which chilli sauces or rubs work best with certain types of food.”

Tracey’s own favourite is her Tomato Chilli Chutney – which is also her best seller: “It has a ghost chilli sauce as its base and it’s lovely and ‘tomatoey’. I’m glad people like

this one because I really enjoy making it.”

It’s been a busy time for Tracey, who had a stall at the three-day Flavour Fest in the city centre in June. She has also been creating a new range of spice rubs which should be available in July: “I’m blending my own mixes which I’ll be selling in individual sachets so they’re only opened when you need them. It means they’ll be as fresh as possible. They’re a quick, simple way of adding a healthy zing to your meals.”

So is she pleased that she took the stall in the market? “I absolutely love market life!” she said. “We’ve formed little communities and it’s like a really nice family. Everyone encourages everyone else. I feel very happy to be here.”

FOOD MATTERS Mo and Zuzi...successfully balancing business and family

Zuzimo! owners Mo and Zuzi reveal their recipe for success Question: How do you successfully manage one of the most popular restaurants in Plymouth AND bring up a young family at the same time?

The answer can be summed up in one word, according to Mo Vassif and partner Zuzi Fancovicova who’ve run Zuzimo! in Vauxhall Street for the past four years and also have two boys aged five and one. “Decisions,” said Mo. “You have to make all the right decisions!”

It seems Mo and Zuzi have a good track record when it comes to doing that. From a small team of four – including them – Zuzimo has grown each year and now has 10 kitchen and front of house staff: “Building your team is where it’s really important to make the right decisions,” added Mo. “We’ve got a good team and good support around us and that really helps.”

Another big decision, says Zuzi, is introducing their “family days” rule: “You must find time for family days with no work.

We swap things around, too, so some days I’ll look after the baby and do the paper work and on other days Mo will do that.”

For Mo, this ‘home’ time also benefits the restaurant as well as the family: “Each of us having that time away from the restaurant gives us thinking time and lets us see things outside the box. It would be easy to get tunnel vision otherwise. So I think you have to make separate room for family and business.”

As many as 14 restaurants are set to open in the area soon, with the £42 million redevelopment of Bretonside bus station. But Mo and Zuzi say they’re not concerned about the arrival of restaurant chains: “We take the positive view that it will turn this area into a place where people will come and dine,” said Mo. “And we’re not worried

because we are already an established restaurant with loyal customers who prefer independent, family restaurants, not big chains. I think that in general people in Plymouth like to support family businesses. They like to know that if they’re spending their money, it stays in Plymouth and doesn’t leave the city. And this is especially the case when it comes to supporting family restaurants ahead of chains.”

Mo and Zuzi’s confidence in the future is such that they’ve decided to refurbish the restaurant later this year but, says Mo: “It will be done little bit by little bit so that we stay open and it won’t affect our customers.”

Those of you who’ve eaten at Zuzimo! before will know that the ‘tunnel vision’ Mo mentioned earlier could never be applied to its food. The restaurant brings together the flavours of the world under one roof, with tapas from the Med, street food from Latin America and tagines from North Africa.

It’s a winning combination with customers, many of whom regularly come back for more: “The past year has been crazy busy,” said Mo. In fact, it’s been so busy on some days that one pair of hands just isn’t enough: “I feel like an octopus!” says Zuzi.

The busiest time is on the last Friday of each month, when Zuzimo! holds a special ‘Regional Food’ night – according to Mo, the South American nights are proving especially popular with Plymouth diners: “All the food comes out at the same time and the whole evening is like an event, it’s very friendly. People love our Latin nights. We have drinks and music from the region so it’s like a carnival atmosphere.”

Persian and North African food is another hit currently, with customers saying the tagines are the best they’ve ever had. Other special nights are Tapas Tuesdays, where you can choose three tapas and enjoy a glass of wine for £10.

For those who like an informal dining experience, there is a bar area where you can enjoy your meal and a drink. And Zuzimo! welcomes families – as you’d expect!

The restaurant has also become a popular venue for wedding receptions, as Mo explained: “We’re doing a couple a month, every month. Not everyone wants a huge wedding reception. We can cater for smaller wedding receptions of 2070 guests. People can choose which type of food they want and we’ll work to their budget. We’re doing more and more of these.”

Marja and Scott swap delivering lectures for Riverford’s award-winning produce!

From the classroom to the organic fields of Riverford Farm … when teachers Marja Boyce and Scott Taylor decided they wanted a fresh start, they really meant a fresh start!

The couple, who live in Yealmpton, have taken up the Riverford Home Delivery franchise for the Plymouth area, where there are currently around 1,200 customers.

Marja still works part-time as a lecturer in business management at Plymouth University but Scott left the Globe Language Centre in Exeter where he had worked for 18 years in order to take on the franchise. It means getting up at 5am on some days, but they’re relishing the change: “There’s no such thing as a normal week any more but we’re thoroughly enjoying it,” said Marja.

“We’ve never worked together before – but so far, so good.

Scott is logistical and practical and likes meeting people and I’m OCD with spreadsheets, so it’s a good balance!”

They’re now in charge of 650 deliveries of fresh organic produce a week – and they couldn’t be happier! “I’ve been a Riverford customer myself for 25 years,” said Marja. “I love that it’s a family firm and I share the passion for organic food, produced ethically and sustainably. And I care about our environment.

“I wanted to work there when I was younger but I couldn’t at that time because of my circumstances as a single mother.

So when I saw on the website that the franchise was available I thought ‘yeah, I’d love to do that’.

“I didn’t mention it to Scott at first because I didn’t think he’d be up for it but then one day I thought ‘do you know what? I am going to mention it’. And he said ‘yeah, let’s do it’. And now here we are!”

Working with Marja and Scott are long-term Riverford Home Delivery drivers Steve and Paul, who have grown to know the area’s customers well. They do eight rounds a week, while Scott takes care of the Monday round. “Steve and Paul have got a great relationship with our customers,” said Marja.

“And they’re more than just customers; we regard them as part of our community.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Riverford owner Guy Watson switching the family farm near Staverton over to organic farming and setting up the veg box business.

Since 1987, the business has grown and grown and there are now ‘sister’ farms in Hampshire, Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire. Almost three-quarters of produce sold by Riverford Farm is home-grown, with the rest coming from its farm in France or from small organic growers and producers – including the produce we can’t grow in the UK or that’s out of season here. However, nothing is air freighted; everything is transported by land or sea.

And for those who only want seasonal, home-grown produce, Riverford have a 100% UK veg box.

So, what’s in season right now? “Asparagus, garden peas, runner beans, sugar snaps, globe artichokes and summer fruits,” said Scott. “And at the moment, people are raving about the broad beans.”

Marja added: “There’s a lot more flexibility than there was at the beginning. There’s a wide range of options to suit everyone and people can go onto the website and build the box they want by adding items to the basket.”

Riverford also sells British free range, organic meats and organic dairy produce. Where Riverford has to source this produce outside of its own farms, it is from small producers that care about their animals.

bring your box to your place of work if that’s easier for you and they can deliver fruit boxes to businesses if staff want a healthy snack during the day.

One of the big selling points for customers – apart from the free delivery – is that there is no contract so you can make one-off or occasional orders. And, for those who feel organic food is too expensive, Marja says: “Yes, organic produce is going to be more expensive than non-organic produce.

But our organic produce is much cheaper than the organic produce you find in supermarkets.

“And actually, it’s down to choice. For three coffees a week you can have all the veg you need.” Often, there is also a little unexpected gift included in the box – ‘on the house’.

Riverford has introduced a ‘Recipe Box’ which comes complete with all the ingredients – including spices all measured out – and a recipe to follow. The boxes have three meals for two people and are ideal for those who want to eat healthily but don’t want to buy all the ingredients in bulk for fear that most will go to waste: “Zero food waste is our aim,” said Marja.

She added: “Eating fresh organic food every week has never been easier. People remark to us ‘it’s like growing your own but without having to grow your own’!”

Two years ago, Riverford veg boxes were named ethical product of the decade in the Observer Ethical Awards and Marja said: “Riverford has kept to its core values. It’s as ethical and passionate and caring now as it was 30 years ago.

It’s why I love being part of this community.”

Latest produce and prices are online. There is also information on the Veg Fund scheme, where schools, charities and not-for-profit organisations can sign up and for every third box ordered, Riverford Farm will donate £15 to the cause.

Ropewalk

the new theatrical walkin Words and pictures by Roy Perring Ropewalks is a bit of a surprise, I went along expecting some ‘bite size’ cameos on history and came away with ‘fun size’ pieces of theatre.

I suppose I’d best explain what Ropewalks is before I go any further. This theatrical walking tour is a collaboration between the History Centre and the Barbican Theatre. The ‘audience’ are taken to various locations to learn about the city’s past. Does that sound rather dull or something for visitors? Have none of it!

The ‘tour’ I joined was a VIP event with members of the city’s theatre and history sectors on board. This was going to be a hard audience to crack but they thoroughly enjoyed it.

We started our journey in the garden immediately behind the theatre and overlooking the Barbican. Here we meet three ladies from the past. After a bit of banter about Drake, they all claim to have known him, and after the passing of coins they agree to walk us around the area and give us some insight on the past.

The ladies are colourful characters, beautifully crafted by the local acting team of Jane Spurr, Amber Linney and Rosie Woodham.

Don’t expect whispered pieces of method acting here, we’re outdoors. Instead we are given comedic, oversized storytellers, worthy of a Beryl Cook painting, who still manage to move us with an intensity in their performance. We seldom visit an ‘obvious’ location, instead we visit a slipway to hear about the Emigration Depot where people left to move abroad.

We also hear about shipwrecks in a car park, bread riots, civil war, Plymouth’s role in the slave trade and also in its abolition.

Even when we reach the Mayflower Steps it’s to talk about the fishing industry.

Paul Brookes from the History Centre explained that this project was one of the ways they were ‘reaching out into the community’ and that it’s the type of project they plan to continue even when the North Hill site is open. Mark Laville said it was exciting for the theatre to be able to build a link with the History Centre and how young people had helped with the research. He was also pleased that they had been able to use local talent.

Ongoing PLYMOUTH - FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION Council House, Armada Way Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians. The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of post war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collection of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explores the themes of destruction and reconstruction.

Until September 9 OUR BERYL: BERYL COOK AT HOME Council House Beryl Cook (1926 - 2008) is one of Britain’s best loved artists. Often referred to as ‘Rubens with jokes’, her work is instantly recognisable and is represented in private and public collections around the world. Although shy, Beryl took a great interest in people.

From nightlife of all varieties, to the more innocent pursuits of line dancing and sunbathing on the beach, her paintings reveal a diverse spectrum of human activity - and her strong sense of humour. Co-curated by her family, this exhibition is crammed full of insights into Beryl and her outlook on life.

June 29 to July 4 PLYMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS A LEVEL EXHIBITION Sherwell Centre, Plymouth University Plymouth High School for Girls proudly showcase a collection of inspirational artwork by their A level students. Exploring a range of mediums, the students exhibit their final pieces and preparatory work they have produced as part of their projects. The exhibition demonstrates the progression and innovation of the students, celebrating their incredible talent and hard work.

July 10 to Aug 4 SIGNPOST 6: A STRING OF THEORIES Cube3 Gallery Pioneered by the art department at Devonport High School for Girls, the Signpost exhibition is now in its ninth year and enables students from across Plymouth to showcase their work alongside professional artists in a public gallery.

As art students, they have explored concepts that are an integrated part of creative thinking and practice. They have investigated different processes and looked at the intangible and unconscious dialogue that creative thinkers bring to their work - which continues to excite and motivate the Signpost projects.

July 15 - Sept 2 PLYMOUTH CONTEMPORARY Peninsula Arts Gallery, KARST Now in its second year, the Plymouth Contemporary, run in partnership with Plymouth City Council, is an open submission exhibition, providing a platform for new, up and coming creative talent alongside artists working nationally and internationally.

The artists, selected by a panel of curators, art director and artists were asked to respond to the theme ‘Visions’, a pertinent subject at a time when the world, on the surface at least, seems to be going through turbulent change. Artists have explored what the concept ‘Visions’ might mean for us now - from the political and social, to alternative realities and other dimensions, imaginary or absurd, utopian or dystopian, concrete or literal.

Plymouth Arts Centre will be hosting the exhibition premiere of Larry Achiampong and David Blandy’s film trilogy Finding Fanon from July 6 to September 2.

The film trilogy is a moving exploration or race, identity and globalisation inspired by the radical thinker Frantz Fanon, who died in 1961. It considers Fanon’s ideas about the mental distress caused by colonialism and the ways race, racism and societal issues affect relationships.

The exhibition includes pieces by each artist from their individual practices and will be previewed on July 6 between 6pm and 8pm when David Blandy and Larry Achiampong will be in conversation with Ben Borthwick, artistic director of Plymouth Arts Centre.

David Blandy’s short film Tutorial will be screened before the cinema screenings of Inversion and My Cousin Rachel for the first week of the exhibition from Friday July 7 to 13.

Larry Achiampong is a British-Ghanaian artist who has exhibited and presented projects in the UK and abroad. David Blandy is represented by Seventeen Gallery and his films are distributed by LUX. The Arts Centre will be hosting lunchtime talks exploring David Blandy and Larry Achiampong’s work exhibited in their Finding Fanon Sequence exhibition. No booking required.

Jasmine Pillar is enjoying the sweet life after bringing together her talent for baking and marketing to set up her own cake-making business.

Jasmine, from Brixton, launched Sweet Buns last year after being encouraged by family and friends.

It’s a world away from her previous career in marketing at a Plymouth estate agent but she says she’s now doing what she really loves: “I’ve always enjoyed baking and I was making more and more cakes for family and friends.

“I thought ‘I really enjoy doing this, why don’t I do it as a business?’

I also run a fitness boot camp – totally different to making cakes, I know – and I liked being my own boss with that so I decided it was a good time to have a complete change.”

Jasmine is a self-taught baker and has felt at home in the kitchen ever since she was a young girl: “I’ve always been fond of all types of cooking. From around 10 or 11 years old I used to say to my mum ‘can I cook tonight?’

“I enjoyed working in marketing and it’s obviously helping me now as well, but I think this has always been my passion really.”

“Some people know exactly what they want already. They’ll tell me their vision or they’ll say ‘I’ve seen this cake that you made, can you do one for us?’ Other people will come to me and say ‘we don’t really know what sort of cake we want, can you help us?’ But as soon as we start talking about what they like and don’t like, they realise that actually, they do know what they want. And I’ll create a cake just for them, working to their budget.

“Anything goes these days,” added Jasmine.

“I’ve done every kind of cake you can think of.

People want their cake to mean something to them, to reflect their personalities and what they like.”

Jasmine specialises in buttercream, rather than icing: “That’s my signature. I find people prefer the freshness of buttercream.

And people also like sponge rather than the traditional fruit cake. I offer loads and loads of flavours but almost everyone chooses either vanilla or chocolate.”

the buttercream doesn’t completely cover the cake so you can see the layers underneath: “It has a nice rustic look and people like that.”

This summer, Jasmine is being kept busy with wedding cakes. It means that most weekends are spent delivering and setting up the cakes at couple’s weddings: “I didn’t expect to be making so many wedding cakes so soon, but it’s great,” she said. “It’s an honour, really, to be asked to create someone’s dream wedding cake and I love being part of their big day.”

She makes the cake on the night before the wedding and adds the finishing touches at the last minute on the day itself. “It’s as fresh as it can be,” she said. “And I put fresh flowers on the top that match the cake. Then it’s a case of popping the cake in my car and heading off to the wedding venue. I’ll make sure everything is delivered and set up perfectly.”

Often, people want more than just a wedding cake: “Dessert tables are really popular at weddings at the moment, so I also do lots of mini-cakes or cupcakes as well as the wedding cake. At the first wedding I did, I made 200 minicakes! People also like mini brownies or meringues.”

It’s not just Jasmine who’s loving her new career – husband Phil’s pretty happy, too: “He gets a lot of ‘off cuts’ and he’s really pleased about that!”

And if she had to choose her own favourite cake, what would it be? “Anything with chocolate and salted caramel – yummy!”

Therapy Dog Henry’s a hit on Hartor Patients and visitors to Derriford Hospital have been receiving a welcome of a different kind from a recent recruit to the Hartor Ward team.

Henry, an 11-year-old Golden Retriever, has been visiting patients on the healthcare of the elderly ward to help with their treatment and recovery.

“We were told that Henry is part of the staff on the ward here right away,” said Gerald Pearce, a patient on Hartor. “He helps me with my day and it’s lovely to have him on the ward.

He gives us a change, a break up to the day and it makes for something a little bit different than the ordinary ward.”

And the presence of their new-found canine friend hasn’t been lost on the staff either: “Henry’s visits are enjoyable for all the staff too and it is a great boost to morale – it’s real therapy. He provides a calming effect on what can be a very

There is no such thing as a common-law husband or wife According to recent studies, cohabiting couples represent nearly 18% of the UK population. Cohabiting couples are those who live together without marrying. Under the current law that applies to cohabiting couples, there is little protection in the event of death or relationship breakdown, particularly where for example, the property is owned in one person’s name. Regardless of how long you have been in a relationship together or living together, you do not acquire the same rights and protections as a married couple.

Many organisations, such as Resolution are campaigning for changes to the existing cohabitation laws which they say are outdated in our modern society.

They argue that there are 3.3 million families who are currently cohabiting and that the laws need to change to provide legal protection for them. However, with no clear indication from the Government that any changes to the law are planned, we are stuck with the existing law.

If you are living with your partner or thinking about moving in together, you should consider entering into a Cohabitation Agreement or Living Together Agreement to protect your interests and to formalise your financial rights and responsibilities. Perhaps not particularly romantic, but certainly more than a potentially stressful and expensive dispute if your relationship does, unfortunately, break down.

“It’s quite amazing as we have found that some of our patients who suffer with dementia remember Henry week after week. Sometimes he will go around and sit by a patient’s bed, allowing them to stroke him whilst he sits there happily, and others like to feed him dog biscuits.”

As a registered therapy dog, Henry visits once or twice a week with his owner, Christine Gentle, and has started to make a difference to patients who are often on the ward for long periods of time.

“We have longer stay patients than most wards so the days can become long and monotonous, we have a beautiful dayroom with a television but not all of our patients are able to move away from their beds. Henry comes in after lunch and offers a glimmer of hope and normality to those who are

familiar with having animals at home or have grown up with animals. We feel truly honoured to be able to provide such a wonderful experience for our patients,” added Teresa.

Henry’s impact has been further felt alongside the introduction of the new day room on the ward. Sam Woollaston, physiotherapist at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust also said: “Henry helps with the social interaction of the patients at lunch club in the newly refurbished day room. His presence encourages patients to socialise and talk together, and they really chirp right up when they see Henry. He’s making a very real, positive difference here.”

And asked if Gerald thought Henry’s skills could be utilised on other areas of the hospital: “Why not? I don’t think there are many people that would dislike an animal on the wards. He’s very good for us and he is looked after very well by his owners.”

Since 1985

When I was offered a four-night luxury trip visiting Cyprus it was hard to say no! Cyprus is a country that I have always wanted to visit but haven’t got around to, so this opportunity to see the best bits across the island was a must.

I started my journey from Newquay flying up to Gatwick with Flybe to meet my connecting flight with Norwegian Airlines to Larnaca. I was surprised how easy the connection was between flights and would definitely do it again for a long-haul flight from London.

Norwegian Airlines is relatively new on the scene; they have been rebranded and introduced a lot of new routes both short and long haul. The aircraft was modern, spacious and even had the bonus of WiFi on board which was free of charge!

After arriving in Larnaca we had a 40-minute scenic transfer to our first hotel which was the 5* Amathus Beach Hotel in Limassol. This hotel is a family favourite and you can see why – it is beach fronted with a splash pool for children, open plan dining looking out to the sea and spacious rooms.

The new marina area of Limassol is around a 15-minute drive from the hotel, which features upmarket shops, restaurants and luxury yachts but still only a 5-minute stroll from old town Limassol with the traditional tavernas and shops.

Whilst in Limassol we had the chance to look at the Four Seasons hotel which is the neighbouring property to the Amathus Beach. This hotel screams luxury having undergone a full renovation in 2016 and combines impeccable facilities with world class service.

On the next morning, we left Limassol for our transfer to Paphos to stay at the Asimina Suites. We had a detour just off the main road to take in the beautiful view of Aphrodite’s Rock, which is one of the most sacred landmarks in Cyprus as the birth place of Aphrodite the goddess of love and fertility.

I would recommend this as a short excursion – the views are unforgettable. There is a small beach and café near to the rocks to make more of a stop out of it. We continued our journey to

Kato Paphos for our stay and hotel visits in the area. This is perfect if you are looking for a quieter base but close enough to get into the town if you wanted. I used the local bus to get into the harbour in the afternoon which was a fixed charge of 3 euros return.

The harbour has the usual selection of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops with cultural delights like the Paphos Mosaics, Paphos Castle and Archaeological Park.

The following day we had a day visiting the most amazing hotels in Cyprus – The Elysium and The Anassa. The Elysium is 10 minutes outside of Paphos harbour right next to the Tombs of the Kings.

This hotel is designed with the culture of Cyprus in mind. It is filled with local marble and stone and has uninterrupted views out to the Mediterranean. The tag line for this hotel is that you don’t have to die to experience heaven – and I can see what they mean!

From Paphos we had around an hour transfer up into the hillside for our visit to Anassa which is situated on one of the best beaches on the island and built in the style of a Cypriot village. It is a luxury hotel for both families and couples and if you enjoy spa treatments this is the place to go with an award winning Roman style Thalassa Spa. The view over the Mediterranean especially at sunset is one of the best in Europe and together with the understated luxury and elegance makes this an ideal hotel for a beach break.

Our last full day in Cyprus was spent travelling back to the other end of the Island to Ayia Napa. On the way, we had a stop just outside of Limassol at the 15th century Kolossi Castle which has spectacular views of the countryside from the top of the tower if you are brave enough to negotiate the castle stairs!

From here we travelled to the archaeological site of Kourion which was one of the island’s most important city-kingdoms in antiquity. The magnificent Greco-Roman theatre – the site’s centrepiece - has been restored, and is now used for openair musical and theatrical performances - mainly during the summer months - making it one of the most popular settings for high-calibre cultural events.

Alongside the theatre are the remains of the ‘House of Eustolios’, which was originally a private villa that was turned into a public recreation centre during the Early Christian period.

Its remains consist of four panels of beautiful, 5th century mosaic floors in the central room, and a bathing complex that is located on a higher level. A roof structure allows visitors to enjoy the site all year round, and explore its remnants.

Our last stop on our journey was to Omodos, one of the most beautiful villages in Cyprus. It nestles in the southern foothills of the Troodos Mountains and is in the centre of the famous wine making region of the country. It is only a 30-minute drive from Limassol town.

Omodos is a village rich in cultural history and its famous Monastery houses a piece from the Holy Rope with which Christ was tied upon the Cross and was left in Omodos by St Helen.

The village is filled with souvenir shops selling the famous and beautiful hand-made lace and jewellery, coffee shops, and restaurants including taverns and a few modern bars and cafes all housed in traditional buildings.

We finished our day with a stay just outside of Ayia Napa in Fig Tree Bay. The beaches at this end of the island are second to none and perfect for a family break.

Spolit for choice for summer family fun

The lighter evenings, warmer weekends and summer holidays all mean that we’ve got more time to spend with our children doing things that don’t involve screens. And in our beautiful part of the country there is plenty that we can do that does not have to cost a lot.

Sometimes it takes a bit more effort but the reward of a great family day out is worth it. It is important to try and squeeze as much quality time in as possible before they no longer want to be hanging out with their parents! (And by quality I don’t mean expensive activities, I simply mean spending time with them on a shared activity.)

To the north of the city the moors provide great opportunity to get out and about. If you don’t drive there are regular buses that travel from the city centre. Take a circular walk around Shaugh Prior and take torches for the little ones in the disused train tunnel. Picnic at ‘The Rock’ at Yelverton: the children will love seeing how high they can climb. Paddle and swim at Cadover Bridge. Bring a BBQ to make an evening of it. Visit Lopwell Dam and cross over at low tide.

Cycle around Burrator Reservoir. Visit the Dartmoor Prison museum in Princetown. Take up geo-caching – searching for treasure using GPS.

Or if you prefer to be by the beach you have plenty of choice.

Take a picnic or a BBQ if you are out of an evening, make a fire pit and toast marshmallows.

Have free fun at home; how about a tea party? Make a den with clothes airers and sheets, build a marble run with cardboard tubes, bake a cake, make a huge box into a car, a house, wherever their imagination leads them….

We are spoilt for choice in Plymouth. So whether you stay at home, stay local or go further afield, it really needn’t be expensive to have fun together. The cost is time and effort but the rewards are lifelong memories and well worth the effort.

A gardener’s dream comes true

Every gardener desires one plant that flowers all summer, has exotic, striking looks, is hardy and comes in a wide range of colours.

They seldom find one that ticks all the boxes, but after recent trials on new, modern varieties of Alstroemeria this may well be the one to do it.

Most people know them as a cut flower and many think they are not hardy, difficult to look after, delicate and that they need copious amounts of water.

But all that has changed now and there is an extensive range of colours from whites, pinks, purples, reds, maroons to sizzling oranges and yellows.

They are also available in a range of heights from statuesque, back of the border, great for cutting, to medium sizes and dwarf varieties that are great for pots or the front of the border.

Alstroemeria flowers are so exotic looking that it is not surprising many cannot believe that many are varieties are hardy down to -10c. They look like lilies, hence the common name ‘Peruvian Lilies’, but will last much longer.

Many will flower from June to November. They can be planted between April and November in sun or partial shade and prefer a well-drained, fertile soil. Too much moisture can lead to root rot and fungal diseases. They are fairly drought tolerant, but letting them dry out completely will cause them to go dormant.

Watering and feeding moderately should keep them in the peak of health. Dead heading regularly will keep them continually flowering all summer long. Don’t just cut the faded flowers off, remove the entire stem from the base and

this will allow more light and air through to encourage new shoots to emerge.

The pioneer for the modern revival is a variety called Alstroemeria ‘Indian Summer’. It is a robust grower, growing to 90cm (36ins) high and 45cm (18ins) in spread in its first season, eventually reaching 60cm (24ins) in spread.

The foliage is different for an Alstroemeria being dark and bronzy, adding to its charm. Its stems are sturdy and stout, and are fairly self-supporting, but I would recommend some staking to keep it looking its best.

The flowers are a vibrant orange with rusty red streaks and a yellow throat peppered with black spots, they complement the bronze foliage perfectly. It is perfectly suited to life in the border as well as life in a pot.

A slightly variegated Alstroemeria has been bred from ‘Indian Summer’ called ‘Summer Breeze’ is slightly shorter, growing to a height and spread of 60cm (24ins), so won’t require any staking.

The attractive and unusual foliage is a dark bronze green, with a lighter, slightly limey green edge. The flowers are borne on the tips of the stem in profusion.

The flowers a lighter in colour than those of ‘Indian Summer’, but still vibrant and striking nonetheless.

Its flowers are more of an apricot colour with yellow markings peppered with black spots. It harmonies beautifully with ‘Indian Summer’. Again this is perfectly happy in the ground or in a pot.

A real breakthrough after 10 years of Alstroemeria breeding is Alstroemeria ‘Rock and Roll.’ This is unique amongst Alstroemerias, as the variegation in the leaves is extremely prominent and vibrant.

When young, the plants resemble variegated Hostas.

Despite having such a strong variegation to the foliage, this has not hampered the vigour of the plant at all. ‘Rock and Roll’ is still an extremely strong and sturdy plant.

It will grow well in both sun and shade, and the variegation shows no sign of scorching in full sun. It produces flowers in vibrant red with a slight yellow throat peppered with black spots. The flowers shine above the foliage and really do stand out. Alstroemeria ‘Rock and Roll’ will definitely be the star of any border. It grows to a height of 70cm (30ins) with a spread of 60cm (24ins), so may need some staking. Again it is suited to both pot growing and in the ground.

For something a little shorter that doesn’t require any staking, try Alstroemeria Inticancha, a series of plants bred for the cut flower market that make great garden plants.

They grow to 45cm (18ins) in height and spread and produce an abundance of flowers from spring right until the autumn.

They are numerous varieties that come in a wide range of colours, from white, through different shades of pink, reds, orange, yellow, purple to deep plum. These neat and tidy plants will look great near the mid to front of the border or as a centre piece in a patio pot.

For those really limited for space there is a series of dwarf Alstroemerias called the Princess series. These are a low growing, compact, variety that grow really well in pots.

They will quickly fill a pot and flower their socks off all summer long and will come back year after year. They grow to 30cm (12ins) in height, with a spread of 45cm (18ins).

These are available in all the usual colours, so there’s one to fit every colour scheme.

These dwarf Alstroemerias make a really colourful edge to borders and will grow very well in rockeries too.

The vibrant flowers of all Alstroemerias is great for attracting pollinating insects into the garden, so as well as looking beautiful, they are also good for the environment too.
