Social enterprises across Plymouth are being invited to apply for a share of a £800,000 pot of loans and grants to help their business flourish.

The funding, worth £2.5 million over four years, will offer organisations and businesses a mixture of capital loans and grants to enable them to create work and offer neighbourhoods more opportunities, making Plymouth a better and fairer place to live.

So far 30 businesses have benefitted from the fund, which is helping to create 160 full time jobs and has levered in over £2 million of match funding.

HMS Ocean deploys to the Mediterranean deployment, delivering operational success over the next six and a half months.”

HMS Ocean has sailed from Plymouth on a 26-week deployment as part of the inaugural Joint Expeditionary Force (Maritime) Task Group.

Commodore Burns said: “This deployment is a hugely important task for the Royal Navy, and for Defence, demonstrating our ability to deploy and operate worldwide, engaging closely with our allies and standing ready for whatever a deployment to an area of strategic interest to the UK can present.

I know that all of the units under my command are ready to make the most of the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.”

The UK’s Fleet Flagship will form part of the task group commanded by Commodore Andrew Burns (Commander Amphibious Task Group), deploying to the Mediterranean and Middle East before returning home in March next year.

The ship, with 900 personnel onboard, has embarked the command element and a company of Plymouth-based 42 Commando Royal Marines as well as helicopters from 845 Naval Air Squadron, 662 Squadron Army Air Corps and 27 Squadron Royal Air Force.

This inaugural deployment will demonstrate the ability to project a highly effective UK maritime component anywhere in the world, whilst reassuring allies of the UK’s commitment to the stability of the Middle East.

The Task Group consists of HMS Bulwark (with Commander Amphibious Task Group and Commander 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines embarked) , Royal Fleet Auxiliary Mounts Bay and the UK’s strategic Motor Vessel Eddystone Point and will carry out exercises with partner nations in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

HMS Ocean will provide the command ship for Commodore Andrew Burns when he takes charge of Combined Task Force 50, working directly for Commander US 5th Fleet for a period of three months at the end of the year.

Captain Rob Pedre, Captain of HMS Ocean, said: “It is a great privilege to be in command of the Fleet Flagship and to deploy with my ship’s company and embarked force on operations today. I am in command of a truly joint defence asset with Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army and RAF personnel onboard and we will work together to deliver success for the Joint Expeditionary Force.

“This deployment is the culmination of a year of hard work for the ship and HMS Ocean’s ship’s company have worked tirelessly to get us to sea today; I am very proud of their efforts. There are a mix of emotions throughout the ship; excitement at deploying to do what we joined the Royal Navy to do – go away on operations; nervousness because for some of my sailors and Royal Marines this is the first time they will have been away from home for any length of time – and sadness at leaving loved ones at home.

HMS Ocean is a helicopter carrier and amphibious assault ship, designed to deliver troops to the centre of the action by helicopter or by landing craft.

Aviation capabilities include six helicopter operating spots on her flight deck with space in the hangar to hold, transport and maintain many more aircraft.

HMS Ocean is the Royal Navy’s largest operational ship is at five days notice to sail to anywhere in the world that she may be needed. HMS Ocean provides the UK government’s most flexible and agile ship.

Council leader calls for Stonehouse Marines to stay in Plymouth

Plymouth City Council leader Ian Bowyer is calling for the Government to urgently guarantee that 750 Royal Marines will be relocated within the city when it closes Stonehouse Barracks.

Councillor Bowyer says the economic impact on the city of losing the marines from the city could be more than £522 million over the next 25 years and this would significantly damage the city’s recovering economy.

The MoD announced earlier this week that the Royal Marine Barracks at Stonehouse, home to 3 Commando Brigade, would be disposed of as part of an estates review but it has not said where the brigade will move.

In a strongly worded letter to Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Mark Lancaster, Councillor Bowyer said the Government needed be mindful of the close relationship between the City of Plymouth and the Royal Marines over the last 260 years and that Stonehouse epitomised the relationship as the oldest barracks in England.

He said: “I cannot help but feel that a peaceful accounting exercise is riding roughshod over centuries of military tradition that is held very dear by both the Royal Marines and the wider City of Plymouth.”

Tamar made that site most suitable for the relocation of the Royal Marines currently based at Stonehouse.

He said: “The City expects the MOD to provide sufficient funds to ensure the 750 personnel are moved to RM Tamar in a timely manner, and that the RM Tamar’s infrastructure is sufficiently upgraded to serve its expanding role.”

Councillor Bowyer told the minister that Plymouth had already been hit hard by reductions in the defence estate over the last 30 years, including the Royal William Victualling Yard, the Naval Hospital at Stonehouse and the Mount Wise Maritime HQ, though the city had a strong track record of working with the MoD to regenerate the sites.

He said: “The City would expect that the MoD does not allow RM Stonehouse to fall into a state of disrepair, decline or dereliction whiles the process of closing the barracks is enacted. There will clearly be a need for additional funding to make RM Stonehouse ready to bring to market and the City again expects the MoD to provide this.

“Plymouth City Council has a good track record of bringing former sites to market, and of working with our partners to make them more commercially successful.”

Councillor Bowyer said Plymouth City Council would work closely with it partners and Defence Estates to ensure the opportunities for creating jobs and providing new homes for Plymouth at the Stonehouse site were maximised.

A group of seven young people have celebrated being the first in the city to complete the Plymouth City Council Youth Traineeship.

The nine week traineeship is delivered in partnership with the City Council, Plymouth Training and Consultancy and Focus Training.

The programme includes five weeks at college, followed by a four week practical placement in a youth centre supporting other young people who are taking part in the popular Summer Mix programme.

Young people take their first steps to employment “The Honicknowle team are really welcoming, as well as the young people.

I have always wanted to work with young people and this experience has made me realise I made the right decision even though youth work was not what I wanted to do at the start.”

They were all presented with their certificates by the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Sam Davey.

The aim of the programme is for the young people to prepare for access to a high quality apprenticeship programme and ultimately lead to longer term employment.

Seventeen-year-old Aimee is one of the young people who took part in the programme, she said: “My experience in Honicknowle youth centre has been very positive and beneficial for me. It has helped me gain more confidence and I am now able to approach a person and speak to them.

Councillor Terri Beer, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: “This programme is absolutely fantastic as it offers practical experience for the young people to develop their knowledge and understanding of working with children, develop their confidence, self-esteem and promote independence.”

The day starts at 12 noon with a Bring and Share picnic, which will be followed by an afternoon of live music, performance, world dance, food and various children’s activities.

Organ Recital Oct 7 Fund raiser at Mutley Baptist Church for Rebuild Mexico, which involves a group of young people from Plymouth building a house in Mexico in April next year for a family living in extreme poverty. Tickets cost £5 to include refreshments.

The event will feature four recitalists from the Plymouth Society of Organists: Dr Brian Thurston, Gabrielle Lewis, Mike Hodge and David Stevens. Visitors will be able to view some photos tracing the history of the Mutley organ, and meet some of the youngsters and leaders, who are going to Mexico next year. They will show a short video during the evening.

Nature in Ford Park Oct 8 The latest exhibition opens at Ford Park Cemetery on October 8 and looks at some of the ureban wildlife to be found in the middle of the city. It will also feature biographies of some of Plymouth’s wildlife collectors,and those who made an important contribution to knowledge of the natural world. The exhibition is supported by Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery,and Plymouth University. The exhibition will be open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Doug Allan at the Aquarium Wildlife cameraman, Doug Allan will be joining the National Marine Aquarium for a special fundraising event for the Community Seagrass Initiative (CSI) this month.

Taking place on October 22, Doug will give a special talk detailing impossible shoots and hair raising stories from his incredible career that has taken him all over the world.

A Q&A session will also give event-goers the opportunity to ask any burning questions to the world famous photographer and cameraman.

From the Antarctic to Africa, Doug’s extensive experience as a wildlife cameraman has also seen him work on many productions for the BBC, such as Planet Earth, Life, Blue Planet and Frozen Planet. According to Sir David Attenborough, “Wildlife cameramen don’t come more special than Doug Allan”.

Raising funds for CSI project, the evening will also include raffles, along with other donation opportunities.

CSI is a pioneering research project led by the National Marine Aquarium. Covering the 191 mile stretch of coastline from Looe in Cornwall, to Weymouth in Dorset, the project is finding out more about native seagrass and seahorses to help conserve their fragile eco-systems.

The aim is to engage coastal communities with their special marine habitats to raise awareness and promote conservation. Everyone from school children, sailors, canoeists, divers, kayakers and even internet users can get involved and help collect vital data that will aid the mapping and surveying of seagrass meadows along the South Coast.

Spearheaded by the National Marine Aquarium, the Community Seagrass Initiative is in partnership St Budeaux Writers’ Group Fortnightly on Thursdays Meetings are held every fortnight at St Budeaux Library on Thursday evenings 5.30 to 6.30pm. Friends, family and MoD personnel who provide essential support to the apprenticeship through placement supervision enjoyed an outstanding performance by the Royal Marines Corps of Drums to kick off the ceremony.

A special award was presented under the national initiative STEM – to promote education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths support to Axel Nicks, while academic awards were given to Ben Ham, Joe Quigley and Dan King.

The ceremony concluded with all phases of the apprenticeship networking with each other to create and develop a firm network of support.

Navy chefs at college

The Royal Navy Culinary Arts Team will be presenting their prestigious Parade de Chefs final practice on October 5 at City College Plymouth’s popular PL1 Restaurant.

It is the second year that the Royal Navy’s top catering team have chosen the College for their final presentation and their chefs will be assisted in the kitchens and front of house by hospitality students from levels 1 - 3.

This is the last practice the navy team will have before the Exercise Joint Caterer competition - a three day event, held at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham, which aims to provide caterers, chefs and stewards with a contest which develops their culinary skills for the benefit of the Armed Forces.

The prestigious event, the Parade de Chefs, will see personnel sweat over hot stoves to prepare a three-course meal for 80 people, seated at ten tables, at ten-minute intervals.

The set menu for the practice evening features a rabbit terrine with pickled vegetables, a main course of

beef cheek and rosti and a chocolate dessert with a cherry theme.

Due to the very nature of the competition, the chefs are not permitted to deviate from the menu, meaning that no variations will be available on the night, including changes for vegetarians or those with specific dietary requirements.

Served with military precision, the evening promises to be a culinary dining experience not to be missed.

Spark Something Good volunteers at The Harbour Centre

Volunteers at the Barnado’s DELL Centre

Volunteers demonstrate real Spark Plymouth volunteers have been out in force completing much needed transformations at the Harbour Centre and Barnardo’s DELL Children’s Centre.

The Harbour Centre, which aids the recovery of individuals struggling with substance abuse, is one of 24 projects that are being transformed as part of Marks & Spencer’s Spark Something Good initiative. In just under 24 hours, the centre’s outdoor space underwent a dramatic makeover from unused roof space to rooftop garden with views of the city.

More than 30 volunteers came together to create a Mediterranean-inspired garden oasis for the charity, providing service users and staff with a calming space in which to think and hold their therapy sessions. Generous donations for the project were received from local businesses including Dulux, South West Water and Otter Nurseries.

Meanwhile, down the road in Torridge Way, 20 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in to help paint, decorate and install new furniture at Barnardo’s DELL Children’s Centre. The space, previously a common room, has now been transformed into a vibrant community hub and café for families and carers to enjoy while using the centre.

Rebecca Cheshire, chief executive at the Harbour Centre, said: “We’re so pleased that Spark Something Good has come to Plymouth and incredibly grateful to all the volunteers who have been getting involved. Our incredible new space will provide the perfect sanctuary for our service users to take time out and think, and we’ll also hold some of our therapy sessions out here.”

Students support Memory Café with dementia booklet City College healthcare students are helping to support those suffering with dementia by producing a booklet for a memory cafe.

As part of their unit on dementia care, the level three students researched and wrote about the effects of the condition on an individual. The booklets, which were given to the Tavistock Memory Café, provide information to support the newly diagnosed and their carers.

Tavistock Memory Café offers information and support to people with dementia, their families and carers.

The café is an informal and social environment where those affected can learn new skills, undertake meaningful activities and listen to others’ experiences.

“850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia,” said Emily Davis, healthcare lecturer at City College.

“According to the Alzheimer’s Society one person every three minutes develops the disease.

Plymouth is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence in dementia research and the students are utilising this expertise to help those affected.”

“The students did such a good Chloe Beaven Smith job with the booklets, I thought it would be great to use them within the local community and Tavistock Memory Café seemed the perfect place. We’ve had an incredibly positive response towards the students’ work and are really pleased to have been given the opportunity to help.”

June Wildman, co-ordinator andhelper at the memory cafe said: “I am really impressed with the booklets the students created. They are so informative, helpful and eye catching. I’m proud to have them on display.

“Many of the people who come to the café are struggling to come to terms with their diagnosis and having the information at their fingertips is very helpful. ” Booklets by Ellie Harding and Chloe Beaven Smith are permanently on display in the café. Both students have gone on to study healthcare courses at university; Ellie is studying Nursing and Chloe Occupational Therapy.

St Francis Church in Honicknowle celebrates the 60th anniversary of its consecration in October.

Plea for blankets and sleeping bags for the homeless Plymouth Soup Run has appealed for donations of sleeping bags and blankets to hand out to the homeless in the run up to winter.

The plea came as volunteers who run the nightly support service ran out of donations to give out to those living on the streets.

After hearing of their plight, Cornish firm Total Energy Solutions immediately donated three brand new sleeping bags to help kick-start the donations.

Joined up thinking Whizz of an idea – helping As a Neighbourhood Watch we are asked to help on a wide variety of issues, and many we pass on to the City Council for them to deal with. But now you have a direct line to the council.

You may have tried to get hold of someone at Plymouth City Council, or maybe you would like to know who to contact about a problem or for advice.

The Council have recently set up a service called ‘Plymouth Self Achieve Service’ so you can now use a computer and report direct to them on a wide range of issues, such as: abandoned vehicles, dog fouling, fly-tipping, pot holes, grass cutting, damage to park facilities, road markings, parking, graffiti, street cleaning and trade waste. You can also check your bin day.

All you need to do is Google: ‘Plymouth self achieve service’. Then click on the ‘Self Service’ site. Click on the relevant reporting box or service you require. The ‘All Online Services’ box will give you access to a lot more.

You can then create an account so that you can report things easier. This will also allow you to look back at your previous reports and requests. A couple of items will require you to do this anyway. Or, with most items you can click ‘Continue without creating an account’, and simply make a report.

You now have an easy way to obtain information or report the things that may upset you or cause you problems.

Can you park outside your house?

One thing you cannot use the new service

for is with regard to parking outside your house. Parking is one of the two most common complaints made to the council, and residents have voiced their concerns to us as well, so here are a couple of questions: Do you think you should always be able to park outside your house? Do you complain to the driver when someone else does?

The fact is that no one owns the piece of road outside their house, so anyone can park there.

Only the Council has the right to mark an area of road for the sole use of a resident, some of whom are disabled and badly need that space.

It is frustrating and sometimes very inconvenient to have to park away from where we live. Naturally where we park should not block a driveway, a rear access lane, or make access to roadways difficult.

Many houses in Plymouth were built when very few people had a car, and so for many years parking was not the problem it is now.

These range from cookery, woodworking, t-shirt printing, sewing, fashion as well as arts and crafts and even furniture upcycling.

Director Alan Jones, who is also a tutor and careers advisor on some of the workshops believes that manual dexterity is a skill that needs to be developed.

With prices from £4 a session they are kept low to ensure everyone can access them.

Whiz Kidz is a not for profit company and the qualified and enthusiastic staff are volunteers.

The sessions are held at the Whiz Kidz premises in Scott Business Park, Beacon Park Road.

Joyce’s Quilt project is launched in Plymouth The Joyce’s Quilt project has been launched in Plymouth with the aim of helping people to avoid social isolation by bringing together women in the community using needlework – a craft traditionally associated with females.

Each woman who takes part in the project will create a square of a large quilt, marking another woman who’s important to them.

There will be workshops across Plymouth so women from different areas, backgrounds and of different ages have the chance to come together and contribute to this 10

The workshops take place at Sherwell Church Hall between 9.30am and 12.30pm on Wednesdays October 5, 12 and 19.

Evening workshops take place between 6pm and 9pm at Union Corner on Wednesdays October 26, November 2 and 9.

Once it’s completed, the quilt will be displayed across the city and eventually in the Plymouth History Centre, alongside information about the squares.

Joyce’s Quilt is a project inspired by the story of Joyce Carol Vincent, who died alone in her London flat and

lay undiscovered for over two years – members of the local community assumed the flat was unoccupied.

She was discovered when her rent arrears became so high, an officer from her local housing association came to take possession of the flat.

She was found with a bag of shopping by her side and presents for others wrapped and under the Christmas tree.

Her story inspired a docu-drama called ‘Dreams of a Life’ made by the filmmaker Carol Morley.

Woodworking for boys

Former physio from Stoke speaks about the benefits of taking part in clinical trials Retired physiotherapist Jane Owen from Stoke believes she wouldn’t have survived Diabetes if it wasn’t for treatment advances informed by clinical research.

Having taken part in five research studies Jane says she can manage her health condition better and feels she is giving something back to the NHS which has looked after her so well.

Jane was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 11 years old. She recalls a hospital admission to have her condition stabilised with insulin when syringes and needles being boiled and kept in surgical spirit and urine testing were the order of the day.

She added: “I have vague memories of being told I would need injections for the rest of my life and later became aware that I would have a limited life expectancy so when I started physiotherapy training in 1972 I researched this for myself in the medical library and found that I had about 30 years life expectancy.

“Medical science and medicine has progressed enormously and I have my Nabarro Medal for surviving over 50 years with Diabetes.”

‘I owe my life to diabetes clinical research’ cognitive ability under conditions of medically induced hypoglycaemia. This involved a full day visit to the research unit following fasting for blood samples to be taken to test for glucose and blood pressure checks.

Jane says over the decades she has experienced firsthand the significant improvements achieved in treatments and management of diabetes from mixed insulins, carbohydrate portion diets, insulin pens and multiple injections to most recently the insulin pump. These advances have been informed by clinical research.

A separate aspect involved consenting to her blood samples being used to discover whether there were any potential genetic factors which contributed to severe hypoglycaemia and loss of hypo warning symptoms.

The fourth clinical study Jane participated in looked at causes of diabetes and its complications including environmental and genetic factors. For this Jane gave urine and blood samples and a healthy volunteer in her family gave urine and fasting blood samples.

Jane has participated in five clinical research studies since her very first one in January 2011. She wholeheartedly supports clinical research participation saying: “I feel it is very worthwhile participating in research studies and trials. I wouldn’t still be here and leading an active life it is wasn’t for health research.

Jane is currently taking part in a clinical trial being conducted at Derriford Hospital which is looking at reducing vascular adverse lesions in Type 1 Diabetics with a medication used for Type 2. This involves three monthly phone calls alternated with attending research clinic appointments for blood samples and keeping diaries. Jane says it involves considerable screening.

“Education has proven to be effective and has empowered me to manage diabetes. As a result of research diabetes checks have improved, particularly for monitoring complications. For example after five decades of living with diabetes I am still able to feel sensations in my feet which foot checks annually have helped to maintain.”

I am prepared to make the commitment in order to progress knowledge of diabetes for everyone. On a personal level my health and quality of life benefits from the in-depth regular screening and monitoring.”

A passionate advocate for clinical research participation, Jane said: “I believe we should all be proactive in managing our own health and wellbeing.”

A leading cancer charity is calling for more volunteers in Devon and Cornwall to help raise awareness of bowel cancer.

The UK”s leading bowel cancer research charity, Bowel Cancer UK, is looking for more people from Devon and Cornwall to champion early diagnosis of bowel cancer by joining their award-winning health promotion volunteer team, and giving talks in the local area.

Over 16,000 people die from bowel cancer in the UK every year - that’s more than 44 people every day.

However bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. Nearly everyone diagnosed at the earliest stage will survive bowel cancer but this drops significantly as the disease develops.

The talks, which are held in workplaces, community groups or anywhere an existing group comes together, provide an ideal way to raise awareness of the disease and encourage good bowel health.

The charity wants to hear from

Gail Curry, head of health promotion and training at the charity said: “A key part of our work is educating patients, the public and healthcare professionals about bowel cancer, in particular the importance of early diagnosis, it really does save lives.

“One of the ways we do this is through our health promotion volunteer programme which was recognised last year with a prestigious award from the Royal Society of Public Health. Our volunteers have all been affected by bowel cancer in some way. They use their own experiences to raise awareness of signs and symptoms, risk factors and the national bowel screening programme. A full day’s training is given with plenty of time and we support volunteers every step of the way.”

Success at Sherwell United Church Two years ago Sherwell United Church on North Hill started an open time at the church on a Monday lunchtime for anyone who wished to come into a ‘quiet’ place.

Many people have used the church in that two years, just to sit for a while, to pray or to chat to a church member there. Following the success of this venture the church will be opening from 12 noon to 1pm on a Wednesday as well as a Monday starting October 5.

City College has celebrated its fundraising achievements for the last year by handing over a large cheque to CHICKS at a special presentation ceremony.

Every year, students and staff at the college raise thousands of pounds for good causes, including a nominated charity which is the focus for their fundraising efforts.

For the 2015/16 academic year, the College chose to support CHICKS - a local charity that provides week-long respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK. What a hypocrite I am! I start this month with an abject apology. I hate the way Christmas comes into view as early as August these days, and try very hard to leave all thoughts of the festive season until November or December.

However, it is not usually good stewardship to leave things until the last minute, as often you end up paying more for goods and services. I’m very sorry, but this month we are going to look at a few ways to make Christmas more affordable.

Start early It may sound crazy but the January sales are a great time to buy Christmas presents.

If you have lists from the previous Christmas to hand, you’ll know what people wanted, but didn’t get. A couple of warnings are appropriate here though: • Last year’s “must have” children’s toy will not be popular next year. Remember the queues for Tracey Island?

• This assumes you have money left over after the previous Christmas. Usually, we have “too much January left at the end of our money”. Never, ever spend money you don’t have on something that’s going to sit in a cupboard for nearly a year.

However, you can help to spread the cost by buying at sensible prices throughout the year.

Or hang on?

Many retailers cut prices just before Christmas, in an attempt to drag the last few pounds out of us. If you’re brave enough, why not wait until they start cutting prices?

If this sounds too ‘structured’ for you, get a family budget sorted, and make sure you allow for a Christmas spend in it. I would urge you strongly to put aside money on a regular basis, as it is much easier to find small, regular sums, than one large amount.

Make lists Many of us hate making a Christmas list, but many of us carry a kind of “wish list” around in our heads or on our phones. Why not create a written wish list on your phone, and add to the list throughout the year?

You’ll easily be able to prepare a list as Christmas approaches. One member of my family rolls over their list from one year to another, deleting those presents received, and adding stuff as the year progresses.

Make a list of everyone you intend to buy a present. This ensures you know how many you are buying, and roughly how much you are going to spend on each recipient.

Without such a list, you run the risk of missing someone, or only realising when it’s too late to grab a thoughtful present at a bargain price.

Ask for lists from those from whom you intend to buy presents. This is particularly helpful in avoiding overspend. A study some years back found Christmas to be the least efficient time of year, economically speaking.

This means that many people buy presents at a price far higher than the value placed upon it by the recipient. For example, buying a £60 shirt for me would be highly inefficient, as I would probably value it at £25! Much better to get me a £25 shirt. If you want my

Work out what people really want Most of us enjoy presents, but actually feel more loved if care is shown in other ways.

For example, a homemade present will be valued more highly by some, because of the time, effort and thought behind it. For me, I don’t tend to value presents as highly as time spent with friends and family, so a small gift and a great time is more appreciated.

Ruth said: “I look forward to taking over as Interim Director of Public Health for Plymouth, there is some fantastic work taking place here to improve health and reduce health inequalities and I want to continue to build on this with the team and our colleagues and partners.”

‘New era’ for city as £4.8 million coach station is opened Plymouth’s new £4.8 million coach station opened for business on September 8.

The new coach station and car park has seven bays, real time passenger information screens, sail-like steel canopies to provide shelter, toilets, a staffed ticket office, ticket vending machines, cycle stand, CCTV, a customer help point and a café concession.

National Express, the biggest coach operator in the country, will run the station which is expected to see over 50 departures a day. Around half of them will be scheduled National Express services, with the remaining scheduled services run by Megabus and SW Falcon.

Council leader Ian Bowyer said: “These are smart, modern facilities that provide a much more fitting welcome to Britain’s Ocean City. This heralds a new era for the travelling public and the city centre.

“In the West End we have this great new facility, which I hope will see more people through the doors of nearby businesses, while over at Bretonside, we’re getting ready for an exciting new leisure complex that will keep people coming back to Plymouth for more.

He added: “It’s really exciting to see large, successful companies make such major commitment to Plymouth.”

Councillor Steve Ricketts, Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing Delivery said: “This will make coach Representatives from Plymouth City Council, National Express and the contractors involved in construction of the new coach station

journeys to and from Plymouth a much nicer experience.

Bretonside was looking rather tired and unloved so these new facilities represent a great investment in Plymouth, in the city centre and in the people who use the services.

Contractor SWH Civils was appointed to build the project while another arm of the company, SWH Build, is converting the former Lloyds Bank building into a ticket office.

“We are a regional contractor working solely in the south west and it has been a pleasure to play such a vital role in creating this important piece of transport infrastructure.

British Land contributed £2.1 million as part of development contribution of the 1960s Bretonside bus station which will close shortly to enable a £42 million leisure complex to be built.

New arrangements have been made for visitor coaches dropping off day trippers in the city centre and on the Barbican, with dedicated pick up and drop off points and waiting shelters being created at Derry’s Cross roundabout.

Operators can also drop off visitors at the existing stop on the Barbican at the junction of Lambhay Hill (beneath the Citadel).

“Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority.”

This quote from Lord Acton, who was an English Catholic historian, politician, and writer, is well known in political circles. This quote is interesting in light of the times we live in although it was stated sometime towards the end of the 19th century and leadership was a male domain.

Brexit is a process we’re involved in whether we like it or not and in November the United States presidential election takes place, which is going to have global ramifications as indeed has Brexit.

In a liberal democracy we have the freedom to vote for the people that we trust will deliver on what was in their campaign promises; if they don’t deliver then we vote them out. One thing Brexit did do was completely rattle the political classes and elite.

Watch this space as they say. The challenge for all of us, however, is that we don’t become too cynical about these events, which can create a personal, harmful inner perspective and loss of personal clarity about life.

Dickens’ started his novel written about a period of massive change in Britain and Europe (known as the French Revolution) called ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ with the opening sentence: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.”

The one thing we as human beings cannot ignore

Experience

Dealing with power without corruption is life itself. We all experience the same phenomena in different ways and experiences, but we all have the same experience of breathing. What we do with the lives we are given (quoting Gandalf to Frodo here – and apologies to those who have no idea who these two characters from Lord of the Rings are) is a great question and a reasonable one also. Is there a world vision that works for the individual despite the experience of negative and positive circumstances? Personally I believe so.

One of my favourite statements from Scripture is ‘And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit,

because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.’ Romans 8 verse 27 and 28 So following the quotes we understand that there can be a ‘tendency’ for human beings to abuse power even within the democratic process (tendency can be an option which is only governed through good integrity, character and a clear conscience); the reality of a life full of complexities including good and bad times and finally a scripture which

outlines a promise of a security or understanding of life which can help people win in life regardless of the circumstances. Living a life according to His purposes is key in this scripture from the book of Romans. I believe that in God, through Jesus Christ, we have purpose as His people who are committed to Him. I believe when properly examined, understood and experienced that a personal faith and commitment to Jesus Christ as the only person who claimed to be human and divine, is faithful to fulfil what is written in the good book. That is why Romans 8 is so powerful when properly lived out.

Even in the tough times. God doesn’t wrap us in cotton wool and many good people go through extremely challenging times.

Perhaps these challenges in life, combined with the gift of free will and a world view which makes sense of being human, can become truly liberating to the human spirit and enable us to live out a life in peacefulness and real joy, despite the negative circumstances.

God broke His Heart on the cross, but through true love, because God is Love, restored that Heart to give us all the chance to win in life, despite the challenges. Jesus knows how to deal with power without corruption.

1 John 4. Verse 7-9 “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.”

Awards for father and son rescue heroes A Plympton father and son who helped rescue a woman trapped in a house fire have been commended by the Chief Fire Officer.

Barry Faithfull climbed through the first-floor window and stayed with the woman while his son Neil called 999 and directed fire crews to the house in Church Close, Plympton, on January 21 this year.

A delivery driver who saved an elderly couple from drowning after their car had become submerged in flood water was also commended at the ceremony.

They received the commendations at an awards ceremony held at Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters in September.

Gary Brewer risked his own life when he entered deep flood water to pull the couple to safety during the incident in the Ledgate Lane area of Sparkwell, on December 30 last year.

The commendation read: “On the night of January 21 2016, Barry was at home with his son Neil, who spotted that the property opposite their home was on fire.

“Barry instructed his son to make the 999 call giving specific details of the fire, including that there were ‘persons reported.’ Barry then took his own ladder to the property where, with Neil’s assistance, he climbed up to the first floor window which was directly above the fire compartment.

Barry attempted to bring the occupant out of the bedroom to safety but due to illness, this was not possible so he stayed with her, ensuring that the bedroom door was shut to avoid any further smoke inhalation. He

And Ivybridge firefighter Alan Lake was commended for resuscitating a very young baby who was not breathing after responding to the emergency as a co-responder. His citation reads: “Firefighter Alan Lake has been commended for his outstanding actions when responding to a co-responder call on 15 July 2015 which involved a very young baby who had been born prematurely and was not breathing.

“On arrival at the incident, he saw that the two week old baby was not breathing and he immediately undertook resuscitation techniques. Through his intervention, the baby began to breathe again and was stabilised on arrival of the ambulance crew.

“It is evident that Alan dealt with this distressing incident, which he attended as a lone co-responder, in a calm and professional manner, undoubtedly saving the life of the baby.”
