Council gets tough with motorists

Life Centre clampdown on parking Measures to tackle inconsiderate and dangerous parking around the Plymouth Life Centre have been introduced, following public consultation earlier in the year.

The measures will address ongoing problems with vehicles being left around the edge of the Life Centre car park, outside the marked bays and on kerbs, which obstructs access for other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Vehicles are often found parked along the side of the building (near Home Park), blocking access for emergency vehicles and restricting access to the disabled parking bays.

To help tackle the problem the council is introducing an off-street order covering the car park and a Traffic Regulation Order covering the road between the Life Centre and Home Park, both effective from Monday June 6.

When the orders come into force anyone who does not park in a designated bay

The new traffic orders will complement a number of improvements made following a road safety audit, including new bollards along Mayflower Drive and the restriction of parking along the Mayflower Drive loading bay.

Proposals to implement a time limit rotation system for the Life Centre car park will not be implemented, following consultation feedback.

Superhero brothers to raise funds for Gold Dust Appeal Two young brothers have signed up for the Superhero Children’s Fun Run in aid of Derriford’s Gold Dust Appeal.

Brothers, Corbin, who is six and 16-month-old Channing Lyddiatt from Plymouth will be lining up with dozens of other youngsters at the event on June 4.

Last year, at just a month old, Channing was sent to the Children’s Assessment Unit by the family’s GP after showing signs of dehydration, rapid breathing and mottled skin.

Mum Kylie said: “We thought he had meningitis but his temperature wasn’t too bad. He then went downhill pretty quickly and started changing colour, like a grey all over, and we were rushed from a side room on the assessment ward to the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

“There were lots of attempts to fit a cannula because he was so small and dehydrated. He underwent a series of tests, including a lumbar puncture and was put on strong antibiotics.”

Channing was diagnosed with sepsis.

After a week’s stay in the HDU and Woodcock Ward, Channing was discharged. Kylie said: “I’ll always be thankful to those involved because the end result could easily have meant him not being with us today.”

Just a couple of months ago, Channing came back into hospital to have his tonsils and adenoids out. The operation went very well. Due to his age, Channing was kept in overnight in HDU. “He arrived at HDU in a distressed state,” Kylie explained. “The staff in HDU were fabulous, helping him calm down straight away. He fell asleep like normal that night. However, he woke at 2am screaming with a high temperature and a barking cough – he had croop. By morning he also had a throat infection and chest infection. We moved to Woodcock the next day and he was monitored for a further two more nights.

“Once again, the staff on both of the wards were brilliant. Not only with Channing but also with me. I can never

thank them enough and although our stays have been short compared to some babies, children and their families, we couldn’t be more thankful.”

Channing is now doing really well and he and his big brother are both looking forward to taking part in the Superheroes Fun Run and Mini Superhero Toddle on Saturday 4 June at 14:30 at the Brickfields Sports Centre, Plymouth.

In addition to the fun run and mini superhero toddle, there will also be a teddy bears’ picnic, afternoon tea and a family fete, with all superheroes receiving a medal for their efforts.

The Gold Dust Appeal aims to raise £100,000 to create a bright, exciting and welcoming environment throughout the children’s and young people’s areas on

level 12 of Derriford Hospital.

This inaugural event is being supported

by Derriford Children’s Cancer Service and Children’s Happy Hospital Fund, who are united in their support of the appeal.

Organisers want to be able to care for children in a stimulating and sensitive environment, with bright and spacious surroundings, which will provide greater comfort and privacy for children and their families.

Landmark for new £13 million STEM centre Construction of Plymouth’s new Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) has officially started with a ground breaking ceremony at City College’s Kings Road site.

City College principal and chief executive, Phil Davies, was joined by Councillor Tudor Evans, Heidi Hallam from the Heart of the South West LEP and Nick Holman, Chair of College Corporation, as well as representatives from Kier Construction to officially launch the construction phase of the new education facility which will support training in STEM related subjects.

Students from across the college also donned hard hats and safety gear to witness this first milestone for the project.

Preparatory groundworks have been on-going at the site since February, and the ground breaking ceremony marks the start of the next phase of the project which will see the concrete structure of the building erected.

Phil Davies said: “The Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM is the most significant investment in the city’s skills infrastructure for many years. The centre will have a substantial impact on the training and education of

STEM-related subjects for the city and wider region.

“The ground breaking ceremony is the first of many exciting developments for this new facility which will create a ladder of opportunity for the wider community, enabling individuals to progress to further learning and into sustained higher-level employment.”

Councillor Tudor Evans said: “Plymouth City Council, as a co-funder, is pleased to be supporting this project for the development of a Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM which fits so well with our future vision for the city and the skills needed by our local economy.”

Steve Hindley, Chair of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (HotSW LEP) said: “HotSW LEP is very keen to support these transformational schemes through our Growth Deal funding - which aims to deliver projects that contribute towards the LEP’s aims to improve skills and enable rewarding careers.

“The new facility with its contemporary design and state of the art amenities will be an asset to both the cultural and physical landscape of Plymouth, and I look

Brian Rice, operations director at Kier Construction, said: “This is the first real milestone for the project and we were delighted to welcome college staff and students on-site. Some of these students will go on to be the future workforce in the construction industry, so it means a great deal that they were part of this event.”

Due to open in autumn 2017, the Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM will be a vital facility for helping Plymouth employers to better meet their need for highly skilled, higher-level technicians and apprentices.

The new £13 million facility has financial support from the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, Plymouth City Council and the Regional Growth Fund.

Derriford Head & Neck Cancer Support Group The Plymouth Laryngectomy Club (PLC) has changed its name to become The Derriford Hospital Head & Neck Cancer Support Group.

said: “It seemed logical that the club should change its course to evolve into a support group to include all head and neck cancer patients, their carers and their families.

The change has been made because of the everdecreasing number of laryngectomees which has made a group separate from head and neck cancer patients unsustainable.

“As a first step it was decided to change the name of our support group to The Derriford Hospital Head & Neck Cancer Support Group. It will primarily be a social group that will encourage individuals to meet up to chat in an informal and friendly, venue and atmosphere.

Fun with slime at Marine Aquarium Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is preparing for a bumper week of half term fun with its very own Slime Lab. Taking place daily between May 28 and June 5, visitors can look forward to a range of activities dedicated to finding out more about the slippery stuff, slime.

Daily slime workshops will be on offer in the Aquarium’s Slime Lab, where visitors will be able to get hands on with some sea creature slime. They’ll learn how many different types of marine life use a coating of slippery slime to help protect themselves, squeeze into small hiding places to escape the clutches of undersea predators and even how they use it to find their way home.

Hands-on fun will be provided with slime-making sessions, where visitors of all ages will be able to get their hands good and gooey whilst learning more about the fascinating

marine life on display at the UK’s largest aquarium.

And if that’s not enough slime time, visitors will also be able to get to grips with the slippery stuff in the daily Slime Science Show hosted in the Aquarium’s Aqua Lab. The National Marine Aquarium will also be hosting a Family Slime Night as part of the half term activities.

Bus Rally Jul 16 and 17 A celebration event marking the closure of the Plymouth bus and coach station at Bretonside and Exeter bus station. A cavalcade of buses will set off from Exeter at 10.30am and travel to Bretonside. On arrival a bus and coach running day will take place from Bretonside from 12.45pm to 5.15pm.

Sporting exhibition proves popular at Ford Park Cemetery Sports enthusiasts have been heading to the Visitor Centre at Ford Park Cemetery for the latest exhibition entitled ‘Sports and Sporting Personalities.’

If you are a fan of football, rugby, horse racing, yachting, roller skating, speedway - and many more - it’s well worth a visit.

The exhibition is open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturday and Sunday 12.30pm to 3.30pm. It continues throughout May and June.

Refreshments are available at the visitor centre cafe and entry is free, although donations are always welcome.

The last event for May is an illustrated talk entitled ‘Get your Skates On’ given by Di Lawer. It will take place in the Victorian Chapel on Wednesday May 25 at 7.30pm.

Tickets for this event cost £2 and can be obtained from the Cemetery Office (weekdays only) on Plymouth 665442.

A popular ‘Notable Graves’ walk led by Richard Roach takes place on Sunday June 12. Meet at the Visitor Centre where the walk starts at 2pm. The walk is free of charge (donations welcome).

A new event for Ford Park will see an evening of entertainment from Cornwall on Wednesday June 15.

The Burraton Boys, a male voice choir, will entertain with Cornish ballads, sea shanties, songs from the shows and many old favourites to sing along to.

The evening starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £5 (to include refreshments) available from the Cemetery Office (weekdays only) on Plymouth 665442.

The final event for June is the annual ‘Bug Hunt’ in conjunction with Wild about Plymouth, where visitors can spend their time looking for all sorts of bugs and mini beasts, in a fun and interesting environment. There is a small charge for treatments, but these are very competitively priced and affordable, and always carried out under the supervision of professionals.

The fitness suite is equipped with an equally impressive range of modern equipment including eleven indoor cycling bikes for fast paced indoor cycling classes, offering a unique way to train and burn calories in a 45 minute workout. Inductions and personalised fitness programmes are in depth and free of charge to monthly members as there are always professional instructors on hand to guide and give advice.

Groups are very well catered for at Marjon Sports Centre too. The gymnasium has a sprung dance floor and the Sports Hall and Astroturf outdoor floodlit pitches can accommodate a wide range of activities , kick a rounds, work team events, training sessions for local sports clubs– even children’s Parties! Plymouth City Council cleans up at national planning awards Plymouth City Council has scooped three top awards at the 2016 Royal Town PIanning Institute (RTPI) Awards for Planning Excellence.

The ceremony was held in London and the council won Local Authority Planning Team of the Year, the Excellence in Planning to Deliver Housing Award for the Council’s Plan For Homes, and the Silver Jubilee Cup, the RTPI’s most prestigious award for the UK and Ireland. It is also the second time the Council has won the Cup. The hat-trick at the national awards follows Plymouth winning the overall award in the RTPI’s recent South West Awards for Planning Excellence.

Phil Bisatt, Chair of RTPI South West said: “It is fantastic that planning in the South West of England has received national recognition through this prestigious Award. Planners across the region are working hard, every day to deliver better places for people to live and work.”

Speaking after the recent regional awards, Phil Bisatt also said: “I was impressed by the high standard of the Award entries, but the Plymouth ‘Plan for Homes’ stood out as the overall winner. The Plan is a fine example of a Local Authority recognising its unique position and ability to act as a facilitator rather than being simply a policy maker and regulator.”

The council created its Strategic Planning and Infrastructure service was in 2014 to integrate all planning, strategic transport, sustainable transport, greenspace, low carbon, investment planning and capital programme management functions.

The team has led on the development of the Plymouth Plan, which provides a single strategic vision and plan for the city.

The council’s Plan for Homes aims to deliver 5,000 new homes over the next five years.

Paul Barnard, assistant director for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure for Plymouth City Council, said: “We are thrilled that our Plan for Homes has won the Silver Cup and the Excellence in Planning awards. The fact that we have also won the Local Authority Planning Team of the Year is a reflection of all the hard work and dedication of our officers.”

Since the original Plan for Homes was launched in 2013 the Council has already delivered 989 ‘start on sites’, released over 138 acres of Council owned land for development, brought 78 empty homes back into use and identified 112 sites for self and custom build homes.

The refreshed Plan for Homes 2016 – 2021 was launched earlier in the year and is an £80 million plan which aims to deliver 5,000 new homes over the next five years and create up to 2,000 construction and job training opportunities.

The Plan includes £1 million to tackle empty homes, financial support for self and custom build and specialist housing, a £3 million Housing Infrastructure Fund, £30 million land acquisition fund, and an affordable housing loan facility.

Celebrating excellence in care with first-ever awards event An event held to celebrate the role of care workers in Plymouth - the first of its kind in the city organised by Plymouth City Council - was a great success.

Around 175 people attended the ‘Celebrating Excellence in Care: Plymouth 2016’ event, which was held at the New Continental Hotel in May. The event was held to showcase and best practice across care in Plymouth, from nursing homes and care homes to those who provide domiciliary care in people’s homes.

Representatives from care homes across the city attended the event, and there was also a raffle with proceeds going towards the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund at Derriford Hospital, which raised £855.

The Children’s Happy Hospital Fund supports the children and young people’s health directorate and aims to make a difference for all young patients, their families and carers both in hospital and at home.

Awards were handed out to care workers by a range of local dignitaries, including Lord Mayor Dr John Mahony, Coun Ian Tuffin, and Coun Linda Bowyer. Tracey Lee, Chief Executive of Plymouth City Council, and Carole Burgoyne, strategic director for people for the council, opened the event.

Music for the event was provided by singer Anna-Marie Waite. The event was organised by members of the council’s Quality Assurance Improvement Team Caroline Paterson, Hannah Shaw, Sarah Ghent, Bridget Buckley and Andy Rowing-Parker.

Members of the public were able to nominate a care worker via the People’s Choice category.

The winner was chosen by an independent panel and nominations from the publc were sent to the Council via email, and through the council’s corporate facebook and twitter accounts.

Soldiers, sailors and airmen who are injured today will still need our support tomorrow and in the days that follow, for the rest of their lives. celebrating 110 years of serving the city Part of the city since 1907, Plymouth Guild has been supporting people in Plymouth for over 100 years with information, advice and practical support.

Plymouth Guild, a charity, provides local support to over 16,000 individuals each year to help shape their own solutions for a better quality of life by providing appropriate and accessible health and social care services.

Among the many services it runs is Ridleys, a support service for adults age 18 plus with a learning disability to provide support, information and advice on day to day issues and helping individuals to develop the skills to further independence through a range of groups, workshops and activities.

The friendly social hub provides a safe place where individuals can meet up, make friends, use computers and chat to staff and volunteers, thereby preventing isolation and improving their general well being.

Ridleys actively supports members to consider a healthier lifestyle and provides guidance on healthy eating, weight, exercise, and awareness sessions on health and staying safe.

The ‘grow, cook and eat’ project will provide an opportunity to try self-grown, organic, healthy foods. Evidence from Derriford shows a high proportion of adults with a learning disability are being admitted to hospital due to making poor dietary choices, so a project such as this will help to educate our members about eating well as well as providing life-long learning and practical skills.

Support is also provided with letters, bills and form filling and the Guild can support individuals to find work and volunteering opportunities.

Plymouth Guild also provides a Carer’s Hub in partnership with Age UK Plymouth and Crossroads Care which is dedicated to improving the lives of local carers by providing quality information and practical support.

Sadly the Guild is becoming aware of an increase in ‘young carers’ across the city.

Due to unemployment, cuts to public subsidy and increases in an ageing population Plymouth Guild is experiencing an ever increasing demand for its services with ever

diminishing resources.

Thankfully, due to two very generous legacies, Plymouth Guild has recently been able to open a second drop in centre for Ridleys, the Carers Hub, its Hearing and Sight Centre and Expert Patients programmes on Mannamead Road.

However the grounds are in urgent need of repair and Plymouth Guild is seeking to raise funds to be able to develop the grounds.

Working with its clients, who come from all ages and backgrounds, have a spectrum of long term health conditions, including mild to profound learning disabilities, hearing and sight impairments, physical disabilities and mental health issues, Plymouth Guild aims to transform the grounds into an inviting and accessible outdoor area and wildlife habitat.

To help raise funds towards the project the Guild had a team of staff and volunteers calling themselves the Guilded Lillies - which took part in the Burrator 10k in May. Plymouth Guild support the rangers at the South West Lakes Trust to make improvements to sites around Burrator Reservoir, helping to preserve its heritage for future generations. We have undertaken a variety of tasks including; learning traditional woodland management techniques such as coppicing and charcoal making, gorse removal, butterfly surveys and bracken bashing to reveal important historical features at the site.

Larissa Milden, Plymouth Guild’s Active for Life service manager said: “Being in the great outdoors can have a dramatic effect on improving mental health, and it is fantastic to be able to offer such an opportunity to our clients.

“We are delighted therefore that a group of staff and volunteers chose to run the Burrator 10k Challenge event to raise vital funds for Plymouth Guild’s services.”

£75,000 boost for Plymouth Music Zone Plymouth Music Zone is running a musical respite programme for carers facing isolation from their communities, with the help of a £75,000 grant over three years from Lloyds Bank Foundation.

Students hear audiology film is a winner

A film made by two students from a Plymouth secondary school about the importance of audiologists has been named as the South West winner in a national NHS competition.

The Devonport based charity uses music to help people overcome a range of issues and develop skills that help them get back on track in their lives.

Plymouth Music Zone will use their grant to fund Voices for the Unsung, a new group to help lonely carers connect with others around them.

The charity provides much-needed support for people who might otherwise be cut off from their local community. Through their programmes, they tackle a broad range of issues including communication and interpersonal skills, confidence, behavioural issues and enhancing overall wellbeing.

Through Voices for the Unsung Plymouth Music Zone will be able to support up to 375 people over three years at their weekly, creative music making sessions.

Through the programme, many of the participants are

likely to see an improvement in their mental health, lower stress and anxiety, or improvements in levels of self-esteem. The Voices for the Unsung programme is due to start in June and will run with a number of partner organisations for three years.

Debbie Geraghty, executive director of Plymouth Music Zone said: “The charity is delighted to finally be able to give a voice to so many carers. Plymouth Music Zone is all about pushing boundaries and trying to do extraordinary things.

“We use music to reach out to some of the most vulnerable and isolated people facing critical points in their lives. Lloyds Bank Foundation helped us first pioneer our work in residential homes and dementia care units and that was a resounding success.

“We’re thrilled to be able to continue that strong partnership to develop this three year larger scale programme of ‘musical respite’ for carers across Plymouth. We’ve wanted to do this for years but especially now when the evidence clearly shows how much it is needed.

“Carers make the world go round and we’re so

excited to be able to offer more supportive musical experiences that give them a voice and the respite they so deserve.”

Paul Streets, CEO of Lloyds Bank Foundation, said: “As highlighted in our recent research, small and medium-sized charities have been hit hardest by changes to public funding yet at the same time, demand for their services has risen.

“We are more committed than ever to providing vital funding to charities like Plymouth Music Zone, allowing them to grow and thrive, and to reach and help the people that really rely on them.”

The £75,000 grant made to Plymouth Music Zone was one of 90 grants totalling £4,014,903 made to small and medium-sized charities across England and Wales in the first of three annual grant rounds, including 12 grants totalling £507,065 awarded across the South West of England.

Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales is the largest corporate foundation in the UK and an independent charity funded by Lloyds Banking Group as part of the Helping Britain Prosper Plan.

Health Education England (HEE)’s Step Into The NHS national schools’ competition encouraged students to make a film promoting an NHS role and Joe Bishop and Josh Franklin from Stoke Damerel Community College created a video about the work of an audiologist.

The Year 8 students’ film allowed their peers to better understand what an audiologist does on a day-to-day basis.

Now in its eighth year, the competition attracted numerous entries from up and down the country and more than 3,000 students got involved.

The competition was judged by an expert panel including Sir Keith Pearson, chairman of Health Education England, and Ruth Spellman OBE, chief executive of the Workers’ Educational Association.

The competition aims to promote the 350-plus careers available in health and students were tasked with designing an advertisement and job description for their chosen role. They could work individually or in groups of up to four.

Carol Hannaford, Principal at Stoke Damerel Community College, said: “Josh and Joe worked extremely hard on their film and we are thrilled that they have deservedly been recognised as one of the best entries in the country out of over 3,000 students.

“This competition has proven to be a valuable classroom tool, engaging students with the workings of the health service and the different career options available to them. The hard work and effort invested in their project reflects their commitment and dedication.”

Josh and Joe, who are both in Year 8, added: “We looked at the role of an audiologist as we wanted to learn more about what audiologists do on a daily basis.

“We really enjoyed taking part in the competition and even stayed after school to work on it. We didn’t expect to get this far in the competition so we’re really chuffed to be regional winners.”

During a special award assembly in May, Josh and Joe were presented with special certificates and Amazon vouchers before Elinor Willis, a senior audiologist, spoke to Year 8 about her role at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

“Young people are extremely important to the future of the NHS workforce,” she said.

“It is important that the NHS engages with young people now and lets them know about the wealth of career opportunities.”

Matthew Friend, Stakeholder engagement and partnerships lead for Health Education England in the South West, said: “I’d like to congratulate Joe Bishop, Josh Franklin and Stoke Damerel Community College for their fantastic entry.

“There are 350 different careers to choose from in health and jobs range from community matron, dietician or public health analyst to a finance manager or web developer. Initiatives such as the schools competition really help to raise awareness of this.”

Business blossoms along Albert Road

If you spare the time to look up occasionally, especially on the drive home, you will often be rewarded by some spectacular local scenery, writes Karen Pilkington.

residential area for bookworms; the rebuilding of a modern church with contemporary accommodation on the site of a much larger but underused building; the vast improvements carried out by Plymouth Homes to Albert Road flats.

One such local place for pausing and glancing upwards is coming down Albert Road from Devonport Road, and briefly taking in the sky, sun, river and the view of Torpoint and the South East Cornish hills in the background.

It is also encouraging to see new businesses begin to relocate to premises that have been empty for some time, and hear owners talk with optimism about launching new ventures.

Albert Road has suffered in the recent past from being just outside the Devonport regeneration boundary, as well as its more distant troubles with extensive bombing during the Blitz. Indeed there is an old air raid shelter with an emergency exit onto Albert Road, that would have kept over 1000 citizens hidden during bombing raids. How safe they were is subjective, as there was a direct hit on a bomb shelter in Portland Square when at least 75 civilians were killed in April 1941.

Nowadays the scars on Albert Road are more those common to inner city areas where there has been a lack of investment over the years.

However, it’s great to see the resilience and determination of local people overcoming in 2016, and the road is benefiting from many recent improvements – the re purposing of part of the library into a unique

The width of the road allows easy on street parking, making a drop in on the way home from work much easier than other parts of the city, and volume of trade is kept high by the open all hours convenience stores.

Successful businesses have been well established for decades of trading, which will bring rays of comfort to those just starting out.

So we applaud the enthusiasm of new start ups in Albert Road and wish them the very best as they forge successful businesses through hard work, excellent service, and determination.

A group of Year 7 students from Stoke Community College have begun their experiment to grow seeds which have been to space.

The seeds were among 2kg of rocket seeds flown to the International Space Station (ISS) in September 2015 on Soyuz 44S and spent several months in microgravity before returning to Earth and being distributed among the schools taking part, along with seeds which haven’t been into space.

The seeds’ growth will be measured at intervals by the Stoke Damerel students over the next six weeks and all the data will be returned to the Rocket Science Project launched by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency.

Rocket Science is just one educational project from a programme developed by the UK Space Agency to celebrate British ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s Principia mission to the ISS and to inspire young people to look into careers in STEM subjects including horticulture.

An important part of the experiment is that the students don’t yet know which seeds are which.

“We are very proud to be part of Rocket Science - it is such an exciting project and the RHS has put so much thought and effort into the planning stages.

“The students are so positive and enthusiastic. We now wait to see exactly what we are able to grow and we are so excited to be part of a nationwide piece of research.”

Year 7 student Courtney said she “can’t wait” to see how the seeds grow over the coming weeks.

“It’s very exciting and I’m looking forward to each time we measure them.”

Fellow student Ryan said it was ‘really fun’ to be part of the project.

“We are part of finding out whether food can be grown in space - it’s very special.”

Many improvements to our local park came about because of our efforts, from approaching the Council to finding groups to fund our ideas. That is in addition to helping residents in many ways.

Some burglars are taking the keys to high value cars and the keys to the front door, and nothing else. Done quietly with no concern as to who may be home. Keep all your keys out of sight.

The point I am making here is that people need your support, be it a neighbour clearing street litter or a full Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

We all know what we should be doing, but, sadly, few of us are able to motivate ourselves to do it.

“Personally, I have experienced some difficult situations, and understand the complex needs of working with people with autism, dementia, and learning difficulties.

My work as a mental health trained support worker means that I am at ease working with all kinds of people, meaning the sessions I run are super accessible.

Sandy Kenny, known by all her friends as Fizz, has been running Fizz Kids Family Fitness for more than two decades, whilst overcoming more obstacles than many have to face in a lifetime. She has worked tirelessly in the city promoting the Fizz Fitness brand with her irrepressible passion, obvious to all who know her.

“As a mum myself, I wanted to offer everyone the opportunity to take back control and improve their own body image and fitness, and can accommodate all kinds of challenging behaviour within my sessions”, explained Fizz, “making them extremely suitable for carers with children with special needs.

Having fought to get the business off the ground with a studio in Albert Road, she faced a lengthy legal battle to secure the premises.

“I am passionate to contribute to people’s wellbeing, and committed to putting the fun into fitness – knowing how beneficial working out can be for overcoming obesity, osteo and joint problems, replacement hip and knee pain, breathing difficulties, as well as anxiety and depression.

She was also battling through some intense personal circumstances to care for her two children and her elderly mother at the same time as holding down three jobs to make ends meet.

Life has settled down a little lately: Fizz is getting married to partner Steve in August, who also helps out at the gym.

Her personal capacity for life is what she draws on for her clients and gym members, as she encourages them to overcome their own obstacles.

Fizz is deeply understanding towards people who find themselves caring for vulnerable adults and children, struggling to come to terms with parenthood, and others

She continues, “My unique way of working means that I can give each gym member much more personal care and attention, and can adjust workouts and machines to an individual’s specific needs. I am a firm believer that healthy exercise should be available to everyone regardless of age, circumstances or personal ability, so offer the services of a personal trainer at very reasonable gym membership prices.

Fizz also has the benefit of making her workouts and boot camps weather sensitive as her gym is situated so near to Devonport Park.

“We always meet in the gym, so if the weather is really bad, we just adapt the workout to inside; if its clement, we all walk the short distance to the park and enjoy the benefits of fresh air alongside exercise.

Fizz also has a background in nutrition and diet and was involved in running after school clubs before she needed to take time out to care for her own family. As life has settled down, she now has the opportunity to get back into schools, running fun fitness sessions that can get the

The Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit, hosted by the Royal Western Yacht Club, is now open for early registration before May 31.

The 26-mile offshore challenge is perfect for anyone enthusiastic about sailing and welcomes yachts large or small, racing or cruising, old or new as long as they meet the Eddystone criteria and are equipped to sail the course from Plymouth Sound to the Deep Hand Buoys and back.

The charity’s community fundraiser, Rebecca Bristow, said: “Each yacht needs to gain sponsorship to take part so please get in touch if you want to sail for St Luke’s.

“We know there are some fantastic sailors out there in our community and we would be delighted if they could give some of their time to help us raise the over £4 million a year needed to be there for the most unwell people in our area.”

Participants pay an entrance fee of £21 per boat and raise at least £50 in sponsorship provided registration is received before the May 31 deadline. After this date sailors may enrol but the fees are higher. The prize fund on the day is £18,000 which is split between category winners and goes directly to the nominated charities.

Volunteers Week Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the June 1 to 12 this year.

Over 21 million people volunteer in the UK at least once a year and this contributes an estimated £23.9bn to the UK economy. This is an amazing figure which shows the desire many people have to volunteer and the incredible benefit it brings to organisations across the UK! At Advice Plymouth we have 238 volunteers working in different areas across the partnership. Everyone recognises that our volunteers are the back bone of our service. Day to day running would be impossible and the overall atmosphere of our organisation would be completely different.

Individuals choose to volunteer for many different reasons; to gain new skills, to keep active, to give back and to help the community, to start them on the path to employment and many more! At Advice Plymouth our volunteer demographic is very wide; we have volunteers from the age of 18 to 80! Each individual brings something unique that strengthens our work for the people of Plymouth.

Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to thank volunteers for everything they give to Advice Plymouth and our clients.

Volunteers provide information and advice on a wide variety of issues and work at varying levels throughout the service. In our Drop-In service we have volunteer information assistants who are our client’s first point of contact at Ernest English House. We also have 15 volunteer Gateway Assessors each week; they answer the phones and provide information to clients. There are volunteers in the Plymouth Guild DIAC

Cash in the attic, loft or shed?

As I write this article (I’m early for once!), the UK economy is slowing down.

Businesses and households are starting to lose confidence as the recovery runs out of steam.

Plymouth is still playing catch up, so I don’t think we’ll suffer as much of a slowdown as other parts of the country, but we can always find creative ways to boost our income.

Here are a few to mull over as we approach summer.

Renting out your home I’ve mentioned this before, in the context of a house swap to create a cheaper holiday, but have you considered other ways to benefit?

Before I list some of these ways, you must check your insurance, mortgage/ rental agreement to make sure you are permitted to take up these ideas. Certain policies may be invalidated if damage is done by someone who is legally allowed in your home.

• Renting out storage space in a loft, shed or other “spare” room.

Fund raising for Crohn’s & Colitis UK Crohn’s & Colitis UK is the UK’s leading charity in the battle against Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) which affects more than 300,000 people in the UK. Experience

Wisdom and knowledge I was there. That is an inside joke for those who went through the heady days of the late 60’s and 70’s.

I was recently invited to share a platform at Plymouth University and engage with some third year students starting out in education as teachers.

It was my own Christian spiritual conversion in 1981 which radically changed my life and helped me to share the change in my life with my mother, who herself had her own spiritual experience with Jesus Christ. It was within my marriage with Kerry where we centred on two areas of life. Where we were going as a Christian family in terms of our work in media and the value and the importance of being a family was the central conviction undergirding our worldview.

I submitted at the beginning of this question and answer session that I was genuinely appreciative of being invited to contribute to the session and wanted to thank these young people who had invested in not just aspiring to get an education, but then in becoming teachers.

We desperately need people who are faithful regarding their vocation and ‘contribute so much to our common welfare’. After all, where would we be without teachers, doctors, nurses, police and many who work within the public sector for the wellbeing of all?

Instead of celebrating the idea of celebrity in entertainment, we need to celebrate those who are truly the unsung heroes who week in week out, with compassion and diligence, have to manage their jobs amidst continuing austerity and often media negativity.

There will always be a few ‘bad apples’ in any walk of life, but that is often the problem. In our minds the story of ‘one bad apple’ spoils the whole barrel. Not true. The silent majority do a great job day in, day out.

One of the questions at this University session was ‘how do we help young people engage in education’ and my response was centred on my own experience which was valid from my perspective, since we all have our own story and they are all valid.

My parents went through a difficult divorce when I was sixteen and I ended up in a bedsit just outside London on my own. I love my parents who have now passed on and they did remarkably well considering their particular life stories.

This was a messy process as it always is for those who value honesty because we all have ‘baggage’. In other words we have experiences, some good and some bad, which shape our worldview and how we see life. Being honest with these experiences is at the heart of the true freedom Christ offers within our journey of faith. He has the power to deal with the trauma and brokenness. Good Samaritan accountants ‘among world’s most inspiring’ An entrepreneur who thought his number was up when lifethreatening cancer and a tastelessly-timed boardroom coup put his company in serious jeopardy has helped a Plymouth accountancy firm win global recognition as a Good Samaritan.

“It’s a real honour for us to be included in it,” said Steve Carey. “We thought we were just doing what any decent accountant would do, but the author and publishers felt the support and guidance we gave the businessman was truly exceptional.”

That would appear to be an understatement, as the book details how Mr Carey and his team shrugged off the risk that they might not be paid and instead put their efforts into identifying an interim successor who was given a stake in the business.

“A key employee left the business under a cloud just as the news of the cancer diagnosis was sinking in, then the man the owner appointed to succeed him as managing director tried to stage a coup behind his back,” recalls Mr Carey.

They devised systems that let the owner keep his finger on the pulse throughout his cancer treatment, without having to be present, they reassured him that his treatment could be paid for, and they brought in a new business model that motivated the entire team to believe in its future.

“It was an utterly desperate situation because the businessman couldn’t afford the cancer treatment he needed to stay alive, the business he’d spent his life building up was leaderless and sinking, and he couldn’t trust anyone to put it back on an even keel.”

“The man’s stress levels were sky-high at first and he was making poor decisions,” said Steve. “In providing a knowledgeable sounding-board, we helped him vent his frustrations and bring clarity to his thinking.

Plympton prepares for popular Midsummer Festival June is a month not to be missed in Plympton St Maurice with the village celebrating its Midsummer Festival – an event that is a firm favourite for people from far and wide.

The Festival kicks off with a concert in Plympton St Maurice church on June 17 at 7.30 pm by the acclaimed Sir Joshua Reynolds choir. The choir’s range and repertoire make it much in demand and it gives performances countywide This year the village is lucky enough to have secured the 50-strong choir who will be performing music around the theme of ‘Feelings’. The popular Lamb Feast on Saturday June 18 from 12 noon to 5pm offers something for all. The Plympton Stannator John Guilding together with the Colebrook and Plympton May Queens and their attendants will start the event rolling at 12 noon when they arrive on Castle Green in vintage cars, followed by the Plympton Scouts pulling the Victorian St Maurice fire engine.

There will be a cavalcade of mouth-watering cars to drool over – and if that’s not enough there will be the legendary barbecued ‘Lamb baps’ to really get the juices going.

Royal Navy base Jutland exhibition

The event, at the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre, is on Monday May 30 from 10am to 5pm, the day before the city’s memorial event on Plymouth Hoe marking 100 years since the major naval battle.

The battle involved 151 Royal Navy ships and 60,000 men taking on the smaller Imperial German Navy High Seas Fleet and forcing it to retreat from major activity for the rest of the war.

Exhibition organiser and volunteer John Williams, thanked all the contributors to the exhibition which is staged by volunteers: “It’s been really rewarding to have such a major reaction to compiling artefacts from Jutland. So many descendants of veterans who fought and in many cases died in action have very generously loaned us a treasure trove of remnants which mean so much to them.

“The most moving are those personal accounts which are emotional to read, especially from Artist Ray O’Donnell...painting vivid pictures those who did not return. There is of the Battle of Jutland

Of this mighty fleet, ten were Devonport-based major battleships and cruisers with 1,600 sailors and marines from Plymouth killed in one day alone. The crew of some ships comprised only Plymouth sailors. Devonport dockyard was dramatically affected by the war with a huge influx of battle repair required.

Among the poignant exhibits are medals and document of ‘bounty’ paid to Jutland combatant Willie Truscott, grandfather of exhibition volunteer arranger Terry Truscott.

Terry said: “My grandfather received £37.10 shillings for his Jutland service which they all got

to varying degrees. Willie was a master chippie on board HMS Thunderer, so he dealt with anything wooden. His medals are from his Navy service from 1901 to 1923 with long service and war chevrons.

“He was injured in the back which affected him long afterwards. I see this exhibition as a very fitting tribute to him and I feel proud of him when I helped put it together.’’

Talented amateur painter Ray O’Donnell, an ex-Royal Naval submariner, offered to paint his vivid battle pictures of the clash of the world’s two biggest navies for the exhibition.

He said: “I create my own views based on actual documented battle manoeuvres and accuracy achieved several sources, such as photographs and models. I’m privileged to contribute to this important event.’’

The heritage site open day will feature waterfront boat tours and tours of the museum submarine Courageous.

Royal Navy honour for Second World War sailor The Royal Navy has presented a proud widow in Plymouth with a medal awarded posthumously to her husband for his service during the gruelling Arctic Convoys.

The Arctic Star is a military campaign medal for Royal Navy and Merchant Navy crews instituted in 2012 for service in the Second World War, specifically those who served in ships north of the Arctic Circle.

Volunteers from Salisbury Road Baptist Church have donated £1,000 to Derriford’s Torrington Intensive Care Unit for a second time.

In 2014, Elaine Giles underwent heart surgery and had to stay in Derriford Hospital for nine days. During this time, she stayed on Torrington Intensive Care Unit and has since made a full recovery.

Elaine said: “This charity is very close to my heart.

Amazing work is done here and we are very happy to be able to support in any way we can.

“Similar to last time, myself and the other volunteers at the church, including Joan Goodman, Doreen Nation and Michael Giles, raised the money by holding a coffee and cake morning at our church’s café, ‘Wayside Café’. I would like to thank everyone that came along on the day for their support and generosity.

“I received excellent care whilst at Derriford Hospital and this gift is just a small token of my appreciation. We hope to continue raising funds for the unit in the future.”

Church volunteers donate £1000 to Derriford Intensive Care Unit - for the second time The cheque was presented to Sylvia Villaquiran, Ward Manager for Torrington Intensive Care Unit. She said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Elaine and all of the other volunteers at Salisbury Road Baptist Church for raising funds for a second time.

“We plan to put the money towards televisions for our patients, which really will make such a huge difference to their stay. Sometimes patients have to stay with us for a long time, so this will help orientate them back into day and night routine.”

The award recognises the particular severity of the conditions experienced by those who served in the Arctic protecting convoys taking supplies to Russia by guarding merchant ships against German attack during the extremely cold winter weather.

Olive Eves was presented with the Star at a ceremony at Devonport on behalf of her husband former Lieutenant Commander Harold Eves who served in the base.

Olive, who also celebrated her 93rd birthday on the day of the presentation, lived in Plymouth until she moved to Australia and made the trip to the UK to see members of her family.

The award ceremony was a surprise. She said: “I thought I was going to a restaurant for a birthday meal – then, when we arrived at the naval base I guessed it was something to do with the Arctic Star.

“It has been an emotional day. Harold would have been very proud to have received this medal. But sadly he died in 1996 and I am very moved that the Navy has taken this so seriously and I am wearing the Arctic Star

Commander Paul Haycock made the presentation in the officer’s mess (see picture). He said: “It is my great pleasure to present the Arctic Star. This was a hellish theatre of war to take part in and Harold survived which was an achievement.’’

Mrs Eves was joined by their two sons and daughter, Harold and wife, Chris(former Royal Navy warrant officer marine engineer) and Sandra Willsher. Harold junior’s wife Sally will join him (her father Harry Guy Vere was a Commander of HMS Drake in the 1950s). Both of Chris’s sons are merchant marine engineers.

Harold senior served in the Royal Navy for 25 years and throughout the Second World War. He served in Devonport-based ship HMS Galatea which was sunk in 1941 leaving 470 sailors dead. Harold was one of only 100 who survived. During the Arctic Convoys he served in HMS Kent protecting merchant shipping and included taking on board Russian gold as payment to the UK for convoy supplies.

He left the Navy in 1955 as a lieutenant commander gunnery officer having risen through the ranks. One of his last appointments was as officer of the guard at HMS Drake in Devonport Naval Base before leaving the Navy and running a grocery shop in Laira, Plymouth, until retirement.

Laura plays a winning card with new wedding game Question: What’s the best way to kick-start your wedding reception and get everyone mingling? Is it a) Do nothing and hope for the best, b) Ask the Best Man to tell a few of his trademark jokes, or c) Get each table to play a brand new personalised card game all about the happy couple that’ll break a smile as well as the ice?

Plymouth writer and entrepreneur Laura Joint reckons the answer is ‘C’ and has just launched her new business, the Wedding Game. The cards have questions about the couple with the correct answer and two spoof wrong answers. Each table has a pack, with each guest taking a card with a quiz question

for the rest of the table to answer.

“It brings something completely new to the table, literally,” said Laura, who lives in Compton. “It’s different and it’s fun and it’ll get wedding receptions off to a cracking start. It’ll also help to remove those awkward silences that can often break out.”

Laura, a former Western Morning News and BBC journalist, got the idea after writing several life stories, some of them ‘potted’ versions for couples getting married: “In the biographies I interview people and write up their stories. The idea of doing a card quiz that reveals quirky or funny or interesting facts about the couples came out of that.

“They just need to send me a selection of questions with the correct and two incorrect answers, plus a couple of nice head shots and

the date of their wedding and I create their personalised cards.

“I think the ideal mix is a selection of questions about each of them and some about them as a couple as well. The questions can be as silly or as sensible or as romantic as they like, although I personally think that silly is good!

“It’s just a bit of fun although the wedding couples might want to give a little prize to each table winner and the cards can double up as a wedding favour too,” she added.

The cards have been designed by award winning designer and illustrator Mark Hannon, also from Plymouth. They’re printed by Significant Signs of Estover, making it a 100% made in Plymouth operation.

A group of Ministry of Defence engineering management apprentices from Plymouth visited the Ministry of Defence HQ in London to mark the completion of their apprenticeship.

The visitors, from Devonport Naval Base, were hosted by senior civil servants and learned about crisis management including role play as a Government ‘Cabinet’ during a national emergency and how the UK responded to the Ebola epidemic.

Apprentices met staff from scrutiny, finance, development and talent management, as well as Louise Tulett, Director General Finance, and Julian Brazier, Minister for Reserves and Lois Nicholson, Head of Scrutiny, and

Apprentice Harrison Drayton, who has worked alongside the Royal Navy and Babcock in Devonport, with visits to Gibraltar and Malta said: “I am proud to work for the MoD because of the opportunities to push yourself, the opportunities to enjoy yourself, and the people

around you who want you to learn and develop as a person, as well as a work colleague.”

Jamie Scott, who has now successfully secured a cost engineer’s post at Devonport, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and found the talks, presentations and tasks very informative. The welcome we

received and the time that everyone involved put into our visit really demonstrated how much we are valued as apprentices, and what we can go on to achieve within the MoD. I am very proud to be a part of the MoD, and extremely appreciative of the opportunities I have been given throughout the apprenticeship. Now training as a cost engineer, I am looking forwards to my future career within the MoD.” Ben Ham, who is now a new member of the Apprentice Management Team, said: “The trip was brilliant, thoughtprovoking and an eye-opener to the bigger picture. The feeling for me is everyone wants the best from you and to fulfil your own ambition and life goals and also help you to realise what these might be.”

New Combined Cadet Force is launched at UTC in Devonport Young members of a new Royal Navy Combined Cadet Force told of their excitement as the unit was officially launched at Plymouth UTC. The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Royal Navy Section, part of the Government’s Cadet Expansion Programme, was officially opened at Plymouth University Technical College (UTC) with a parade, Royal Marines Band Plymouth and a unit flag-hoisting before an audience of civic and military VIPs, students, staff and parents.

Commodore Robert Fancy, Commodore Naval Training, based in Devonport Naval Base, inspected the newlytrained cadets at a ceremony hosted by Polly Lovell, Principal of the college. He said: “It is a huge privilege to open a brand new Royal Navy Cadet Force and especially so in Plymouth with the close ties with the Royal Navy.

“The cadet force will enrich the cadets’ experience of education at UTC Plymouth. UTC will deliver an excellent education in science and engineering and the CCF will add to this, giving them challenges such as leadership and team-building underpinned by the Royal Navy’s core values of commitment, courage, discipline, respect for others, integrity and loyalty.

“They will also get a chance to take part in many activities not normally available to other youngsters, such as kayaking and sailing.’’ He added that if the cadets wanted to join the Royal Navy then they would be warmly welcomed, especially those with an engineering career in mind.

Petty Officer Cadet Nicola Perry, 17, transferred from another sea cadet unit. She said: “Today was a really special event.’’

Cadet Annabell Mears, 16, wants to be a Royal Navy engineer. She said: “I’m a brand new cadet with no experience and so far we’ve done some seamanship skills and trained a lot for this parade. Luckily the drill was the best we’ve ever done.’’

Cadet Siobhan Mackie said: ‘’It was really nerveEnjoying the occasion cadets (from left) Siobhan Mackie, Clarissa Mears, Adam Ingleheart and Jack Slator wracking in front of everyone today, but an amazing experience. I’d like to join the Navy. I want to apply my experiences with the cadets to my learning and get a taste of life in the Navy.’’

The RN Cadet Section will further cement links with the wider Royal Navy. Plymouth UTC, which opened in September 2013, is one of six university technical colleges already affiliated to the Royal Navy.

Flag Officer Sea Training Rear Admiral John Clink (based at Devonport Naval Base) said: “The intention for Royal Navy involvement in UTC sponsorship is to support the development of young engineers in the UK. “There are significant areas of the UK engineering industry that help to supply and support the engineering that makes the Royal Navy a strong global force.”

The Royal Navy is committed to the enduring success of the UTC concept by providing access to world class facilities and technical expertise to enrich the development of UTC students to generate the technicians and graduates of tomorrow.

The principal aim of the CCFs is to develop leadership

Body builder Steve gets an international call-up

Plymouth-based Royal Navy sailor, Able Seaman Chris Linton, 26, is aiming for the stars with the release of his new music single.

Chris who works with 30 Commando Royal Marines, based in Royal Marine Barracks Stonehouse, has been getting regular airplay on ‘BBC Introducing’ in Devon, and has even played live to open up BBC Devon’s brand new Plymouth studio.

Following his recent success of his extended play ‘Ascension’, his latest single and promotional video ‘Fall To The Floor’ was released on YouTube in May and is now available to buy after an official release.

A Royal Naval sailor has reached international level for the first time in his quest for body-building perfection.

Chief Petty Officer Steve Winter, who works at Devonport Naval Base is due to represent his country next week in Spain for the first event of the year.

This year he switched from the discipline of ‘bodybuilding’ to ‘physique’. This has been a successful move – leading to victory in the (UKBFF) Masters (over 40’s) Physique class.

He has qualified for and been selected for the UK team (UK Federation of Body Building and Fitness Federation - UKBFF) competing in the European Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships in Santa Susanna. This major achievement entitles him to enter future international events when selected.

Major body-building competitions include the Arnold Classic, International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) Diamond Cup and Amateur Olympias.

Steve works for the Royal Navy’s Flag Officer Sea Training organisation as a ships damage control instructor teaching RN and foreign navies in fire-fighting, damage control, chemical training and search and rescue.

Steve started competing in bodybuilding

Steve added: “I decided to compete again after two years away from the stage, as I felt I had not fully achieved what I wanted. It was unfinished business, gaining that elusive first place.

“I dieted for 15-weeks to get into my peak condition and it does get more difficult as you get older, as your metabolism slows down and you have more commitments in life to deal with, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

He thanked his family backing: “If it wasn’t for the support of my amazing wife Samantha and my family, I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am now. My son Thomas who is seven is very excited about my next competition and it’s a double joy for me as I am soon to be a father again to a daughter, Charlotte in just a couple of months time.”
