Plymouth Property News What would Brexit mean to the 56,800 Plymouth Property owners? I don’t know about you, but I find if you read the Daily Mail, there are only three topics that make the blood boil of ‘Middle England’. Bureaucracy from Brussels, House Prices and the late Princess of Wales. Ignoring the late Princess if I can for this article, if we as a country were to unshackle ourselves from chains of Brussels (the first topic), could we inadvertently effect the second topic Darren Lawson MNAEA and make UK house values Managing Director drop? If you read all the newspapers, the Brexit debate seems to be focused solely on central London. Many commentators have said Brexit would mean central London would have a lower standing in the world, meaning less people would be employed in Central London, with the implication of lower wages, fewer jobs etc., in Central London ... but we are in Plymouth, not Marylebone, Mayfair or any part of Zone 1 London.

... But again, we are in Plymouth and central London is 237 miles away. We are home to Plymouth Argyle FC, navigator and Mayor of Plymouth Sir Francis Drake and Tom Daley,

Independent Estate Agents

Initially, over the coming months, on the run up to referendum, I believe it will be like the run up to last year’s General Election. With the short-term uncertainty in the country, quite often, big decisions are put on ice and people are less likely to make big money purchases i.e. buy a property. However, in the four months up to last year’s Election, property values in Plymouth increased by 0.85%, not bad for a country that thought it would get a hung parliament! So that argument doesn’t hold much weight with me. Post vote, should the UK opt to leave Brussels, there would be a much more noteworthy impact. I believe that a vote to stay in the EU would see the Plymouth property market return to a status quo very quickly, but the contrasting result could lead to some changes. The principal menace to the Plymouth (and UK) housing market could be variation (in an upwards direction) in interest rates as a result of a Brexit, which could theoretically see the cost of mortgages grow swiftly, pricing many out of the market … but then two thirds of landlords buy without a mortgage, so that won’t affect them. Also, according to the Bank of England, 80.33% of all new mortgages taken out in 2015 were fixed rate. Looking at all mortgages as a whole, according to the Bank of England, 44% of all UK mortgagees have a fixed rate mortgage, but 56% don’t, so if you aren’t on a fixed rate ... talk to your mortgage broker now, because they can only go in one direction! So in reality, if I really knew what will happen,

I wouldn’t be an estate agent in Plymouth, but a City Whiz Kid in London earning millions. However, I suspect whatever decision the electorate of Plymouth and the country as a whole makes, over the long term it won’t have a major effect on the Plymouth property market. We have seen off ‘the end of the world’ credit crunch of 2008/9 and subsequent property crash, the 1988 Nigel Lawson induced post dual-MIRAS property crash, the 1979 Winter of Discontent property crash, the 1974 oil crisis that stimulated another property crash ... hell, we can even go back nearly a century with the 1926 post General Strike slump in property prices... Today, property prices are 162.7% higher than 21 years ago in Plymouth and are 1.1% higher than 12 months ago. So, make your own decision on 23rd of June 2016 safe in the knowledge that whatever the result, there might be some short term volatility in the Plymouth property market, but in the long term (and property investment is a long term strategy) there aren’t enough houses in Plymouth to live in either to buy or rent … and until the Government allow more properties to be built – the Plymouth property market, will be just fine ... even if it has a little blip in the summer, there could be some property bargains on the run up to Christmas to be had! For more advice and opinion on the Plymouth property market, even where those buy to let bargains could be found now ... visit the plymouthpropertynews.wordpress.com

Now on the run up to the vote on the 23rd of June, I predict the ‘in’ camp will start to scare homeowners with forecasts of negative equity, and the ‘out’ camp will appeal to the 20 somethings, who have been priced out of the property market with the prospect of a new era of inexpensive housing, should the fears of central London estate agents and developers, who believe the bottom will fall out of the market if we do leave, become real. The only reason the Mayfair’s, Knightsbridge’s, and Kensington’s of central London are attractive to foreign buyers are political and economic steadiness, an open and honest legal system and a lively cultural life. None of that is threatened by Brexit.

and whilst the central London property market exploded after 2009, that explosion really and honestly didn’t affect the Plymouth property market. So, putting central London aside, what would an ‘in’ or ‘out’ vote really mean for the 56,800 property owners of Plymouth?

WEDDING MATTERS

Wedding suppliers join forces for inspirational photo shoot

On the steps of Devonport Guildhall... Left to right: Grace from Grace Elizabeth Photography, Lou from Devonport Guildhall, Abi from Dearly Beloved, Jennifer from Edible Essence, Agata from UpArt Photography and Kelly from Native Flower Farm

Local wedding suppliers have come together to share spring wedding inspiration in a modern wedding styled photo shoot, created especially for couples looking for an alternative way to tie the knot in Devon! They chose Devonport Guildhall as the location for the photo shoot to demonstrate their collective creative skills and show just how talented they all are. Focused on the finer details of wedding celebrations, including illustrated invitations, a rustic bouquet and hand painted wedding cake the talented Devon based suppliers joined forces to create vibrant wedding styling featuring sweet pastels and modern rose gold tones - perfect for the modern couple! “After visiting the beautiful, light space at Devonport Guildhall we thought it would be great to illustrate the iconic architecture. It can be really tricky to find a city centre venue that still has a classic airy feel and so really wanted to share this venue with couples looking to get hitched in Devon,” said Abigail McKenzie of Plymouth-based Dearly Beloved. Creative couple Abigail McKenzie and Ben Aslett of Dearly Beloved, specialise in contemporary wedding invitations. For

this inspirational photo shoot the design duo created a quirky suite of stationery featuring a custom illustration of the historic venue. Using the invitations as a starting point, local suppliers Native Flower Farm, Edible Essence Cake Art, UpArt Photography and Grace Elizabeth Photography worked collaboratively with Dearly Beloved’s Abigail to create a contemporary, fun wedding style. "We knew we needed bright but delicate flowers to highlight and meld all the elements of the scheme into one big beautiful whole. Inspired by what we saw in our fields and the classic flower shapes of Dearly Beloved Guildhall designs, we created a bridal bouquet and tablescape of bright pops and fresh greens in a riotous garden-gathered style with a delicate nod to the elegance of the Regency setting of the Guildhall with our favourite trailing ribbon styling." said Kelly of Native Flower Farm.

COMMUNITY MATTERS

From Plymouth with love how local people are making a difference for refugees in Syria Faraday Fearnside stands in the middle of a giant storage warehouse in Saltash and, hands on hips, surveys the scene around her: bags full of clothing here, boxes of toys there, bedding stacked in piles to one side and table tops covered with toiletries to the other. It’s all waiting to be sifted, sorted, categorised and packed ready for the long journey to Syria, which, as the volunteers do the sifting and sorting, is in just seven days’ time. Faraday, who lives in Mutley, knows all about journeys, having been on what she admits is a life-changing one of her own during the past nine months or so, during which she has set up the Open Hearts Open Borders (OHOB) organisation. How she has reached this point is a story in itself. “Like so many others, I hadn’t really paid much attention to what was happening in Syria and Calais, I was just living my life, and then I bumped into a friend of mine in a café in town,” recalls Faraday. “She told me she really wanted to do something to help the people in the refugee camps but she didn’t know what. Then she suggested taking a vanload of essential things over to Calais. “Originally I said I would go with her but unfortunately at that time, it wasn’t possible. So instead we took a vanload of items down to Wadebridge, which were then shipped to Calais.” That trip was in November and it proved to be just the start, as Faraday explained: “Not long after, I was in the gym. The news was on the TV and there was a report about what was happening in Syria. It kept me awake all night, thinking about it. “People are dying, children are dying, they’re running away from bombs and they’re running towards shelter and warmth and safety. The number of people killed in Syria is the same as the population of Plymouth. That makes you stop and think. This just shouldn’t be happening in the 21st century. “I saw on social media what other people were doing to help and I decided to set up a group page on Facebook, asking for people to donate essential items which could be taken to the refugee camps in Syria. And it all mushroomed not just in Plymouth and Cornwall but all over the South West. I knew I wanted to do more than send items to Calais so I decided we would start sending aid containers from Plymouth. “We set up collection points and people donated so much that we filled a container, which we sent to Syria through the One Nation UK charity in February. In fact, we collected so much that I knew we’d be sending a second container. It only

COMMUNITY MATTERS took us six weeks to reach the point when we had enough to do that.” Faraday, a specialist one-to-one study skills tutor and mentor in higher education, is used to helping people; it’s what she does for a living. She says the response from the public shows that the vast majority want to help the displaced families in Syria, too. And she has a ready answer to those who argue that the disaster is too huge for an organisation such as OHOB to make a difference: “I say that we ARE making a difference. How can we not? We’re sending food, shelter, toiletries, all the essential things that people need in order to live so that they have the capacity to move forward. “But in actual fact, there hasn’t been much negativity. Most people have been overwhelmingly positive and supportive. Instead of saying ‘we can’t do anything’ people are saying ‘what can we do?’ There’s no political agenda to this; it’s just about helping people who need help.”

As Faraday was talking, more and more volunteers were arriving at the Quickstore storage depot in Saltash to help with the packing, giving their time on a lovely spring Saturday. This consignment headed to Syria on May 14, but the work continues for OHOB. What started as a sleepless night and a subsequent Facebook page is now an organisation with its own website and it could soon become a registered charity; Faraday is currently in the process of making the application. This summer she intends to visit some of the refugee camps in Greece and ultimately, she aims to visit the camps in Syria: “I want to see where all these things are going, I want to see the difference it’s making. It seems the natural thing to do. “The amount of work doesn’t phase me at all. I wake up feeling happy and positive and energised. I have a passion, a drive, to help people – and I’ll do this until I don’t have to do it any more. We all have a role to play in this world and a place to find, we just need to find it. And I’ve found mine. “But the premise of the charity is not about what I am doing, or what I have set up, it is about the love and support shown by the people of the South West; Open Hearts Open Borders belongs to them. It is their charity. It is about their love for humanity, their compassion for others and their desire for peace. Love is an infinite resource, it never runs out. As long as we have love we can be, do and have whatever we want. At the core of OHOB is love, love of people and love for humanity.”

BUSINESS MATTERS for part of their summer holidays?” In the first instance, would-be hosts should contact the Barking Mad office for a chat. The whole process is done with privacy and security in mind, so dog owners and hosts never meet and don’t have each other’s contact details. Hosts can list their preferred breeds and sizes and choose if they prefer to take boys or girls: “Our dogs are anything from six months old to 14-years-old,” said Jennifer. “Boys, girls, big, small, shy, energetic; there’s a dog for everyone.” Jennifer says that hosts are never put under any pressure to take dogs: “If we have a dog that we know matches them, we’ll call them but if it’s not convenient, that’s fine. There’s no obligation.” Once the host and the dog are matched, the dog has a 2-3 day sleepover by way of an introduction. If things work out, the dog will be able to stay for a proper holiday when the time comes. It was through this ‘test’ that Bailey’s owner, Sonia, placed him in the care of Jean and Tony: “It’s nice for people to be able to go away on holiday in the knowledge that their dog is happy,” said Tony. “It’s a home-from-home service. We take photos and send them to the office which are sent on so the owners can see their dogs are happy. “From our point of view, we have nothing to worry about. The dogs are driven door to door by Barking Mad and everything comes with them – toys, food, bed, and in some cases, their medicine. Sometimes it can take a dog 24 hours to settle in, but then they’re fine. And we know that we can call Barking Mad any time of the day and night if the need arises and they’ll deal with it straight away. The backing and support it always there, literally 24/7.” One thing’s for sure: dogs that stay with Jean and Tony are guaranteed a grand old time: “They sometimes come on holiday with us in our caravan,” said Jean. “They’re part of the family aren’t they? “I’m certainly looking forward to Bailey coming back to stay with us, he’s welcome any time!”

It’s early May and outside, it looks as though spring has finally sprung. important to us but our mantra is the same now as it was when the late Mrs Harvey was here. She always said that everything was about quality, quality, quality, and that remains the same today. All our ingredients are real, there’s nothing artificial, and the milk that comes from Jerseys is the best in the world.” Sourcing local fare isn’t the only way that Langage Farm is ensuring maximum sustainability, as Paul explained: “All the waste on the farm goes into renewable energy because we have our own anaerobic digestion system that turns it into electricity. Sustainability and low footprint is extremely important to us and I think what we are doing is unrivalled in the UK and possibly in Europe.” At the latest count, Langage boasts 36 different flavours of ice cream and frozen yoghurts, including all the favourites, Blackberry and Apple Crumble, Chunky Chocolate, Raspberry and Cream, Mint Choc Chip, White Chocolate and Raspberry, Strawberry and Cream, and the most popular of all, Clotted Cream Vanilla. The 50-strong Langage Farm team is trying out new flavour combinations all the time – and this is where you can play a part: “We bring our new experiments into the shop and ask our customers to taste them,” explained Tracie. “We’ll go with what they say which is lovely because it means our customers are part of the process.” As well as Langage Farm’s full range of delicious dairy produce, the café and deli also sells locally-made pasties from Chunk of Devon, pies from Okemore Pies, cheeses from Sharpham and cakes from Chocaccino on the Barbican. Some gluten-free options are available, too. “But if people just want to pop in for a tea or a coffee or a cold drink, that’s fine,” said Tracie. The deli is ideal for stocking up for a picnic or a trip to the beach, while the shop can also make up local produce hampers to order and offers a cream-by-post service. Throw in service with a smile and all in all, it’s the sort of place that anyone who likes their food should probably get to know. And, as Tracie says: “We can cater for over 20 people inside but when you’re in the garden, it’s like a little bit of the countryside, just a few miles from Plymouth city centre.” Fresh Devonshire fare in the sun with the birds singing? What more could anyone ask for on a gorgeous summer’s day! Summer opening is 9.30am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm on Sundays. Free parking for up to two hours is available at the Ridgeway’s car parks.

New café at Waterstones New George Street champions local produce

Lee Auburn, manager at Waterstones in New George Street

A new chapter has just begun at Waterstones book shop in New George Street, with a makeover that’s extended the café across the length of the top floor – but in three very distinct spaces. The revamp coincides with the switch from the previous Costa Coffee to a brand new café, featuring food and drink sourced from local producers. The café development is part of store manager Lee Auburn’s vision to transform the bookshop into a place where shoppers can relax and make themselves at home with a cuppa and a bite to eat. “We’ve taken the opportunity to have a complete re-think,” said Lee. “We decided that we wanted to integrate the café into the rest of the shop, with the aim

16\

The Plymouth Magazine June 2016

of transforming our bookshop into a community hub. I think we’ve come up with something that really works.” The re-think has meant moving some book sections downstairs and others upstairs to fit in with the café themes. The main café area remains where it’s always been, but has been given a retro look. Shelves with books are dotted around for customers to flick through. Moving through the upstairs floor, the next area is set out in a lounge theme, with comfy sofas and tables alongside the lifestyle books section. Then, at the other end, there are tables and chairs for parents and children and activity areas in amongst the children’s books. “To me, it was a no brainer,” said Lee, who, with six years of bookselling experience and 18 years in the hospitality industry, is in his element marrying his twin passions of food and books. “We’ve got a great children’s section and we want to be as family friendly as possible. And then we have the lounge area where people can make themselves at home, and finally, we have the space that was formerly the Costa café where people can have a relaxing drink and something to eat. We’ve got roughly the same number of covers as we had before, around 70, but because we’re using the whole space it has a relaxed feeling. “We want everyone to feel welcome,” added Lee. “You don’t have to buy a book, just come and sample the great food. And feel free to grab a book to flick through while you’re here. We’ve got a nice selection scattered around the café for people to pick up, or choose one from the shelves. We’re very relaxed about the whole thing.” The new café, headed by café manager Jess Ellard, was opened in April and Lee says the aim has been to source local produce wherever possible: “We are lucky in Plymouth to be blessed with a fantastic range of artisan bakers and specialist local producers,” he said.

“I looked at several bakers and the Column Bakehouse at Devonport Guildhall really stood out. They’re a social enterprise too which sits well with our ethos and what we want to do. They supply us with our fresh bread, scones, teacakes and tarts and they’re amazing. Our gourmet pies come from Tom’s Pies, based near Exeter, and Bites on Plymouth Barbican supply our sandwiches, paninis and toasties seven days a week. And our dairy products come from Trewithen Dairy in Cornwall.” The coffee, meanwhile, is from Matthew Algie and is triple certified which means it is approved by the Fairtrade Foundation, Rainforest Alliance and Organic Food Federation. Lee says the changes have gone down well: “We launched on 30 April and the response from customers has been excellent. We’re still looking to tweak things here and there but I’m really pleased with how it looks and how the café works with the book displays across the whole of the top floor. “We’re also looking to add to the range of cakes and snacks and we think our Ploughman’s, featuring produce from our local suppliers, will be very popular this summer.” The menu includes gluten free dishes and the shop has a lift to enable access for pushchairs and wheelchairs. As part of his vision for the store, Lee is looking to organise more events and visits from authors. On May 11, there was an evening with Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell and Lee said: “We’re planning many more of these special events. We’ve got such a great space now that it lends itself to these sorts of events. “Using the space in the evening, too, helps us to realise the vision of Waterstones in New George Street becoming a cultural and community hub for the city.” Visit the Waterstones NGS Facebook page for latest news on events and café menus.

Movie Night Concert at Guildhall

Music

Have a great night out at the movies with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra’s Movie Night concerts at Sterts Theatre, Liskeard on June 12 at 5.30pm and at Plymouth Guildhall on June 15 at 7.30pm. This Movie Night extravaganza features some of the most popular and wellknown film music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind to Harry Potter. The concerts are always some of the most popular of the season and explore the rich legacy of film music from Hollywood and beyond. From the very start - even when movies were silent – music had one principal function: to help audiences follow plots and identify characters. The concerts celebrate the masters of their craft including the

incomparable John Williams, master of movie music, who has composed some of the most instantly recognisable music of the last 50 years. His works performed in this concert include some of his early scores such as ET and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, as well as music more familiar to a younger audience such as Harry Potter and Star Wars.

WCP Theatre Company Presents “Experience the untold story of The Angel of Music!”

KITCHENS & BEDROOMS Faraday Mill

Ju dith a n d M a r t i n l i vi n g th e d r eam There’s nothing more Plymouth couple Judith and Martin Soper enjoy than looking after their three grandchildren. “I visited a number of showrooms and eventually found KF Kitchens who had an excellent display of fitted bedrooms,” she said. “Simon from KF Kitchens could not have been more helpful and he designed the range of bespoke fitted wardrobes, along with bedside lockers and a matching door onto Martin’s walkin wardrobe. “We were really pleased with the end result but the best was yet to come,” said Judith. “I fell completely in love with one of the kitchens on display in their incredible showroom and I knew that anything else would be second best. “I was like a child in a sweet shop looking at all the amazing gadgets, appliances and finishing touches that KF Kitchens have available,” she added. Their previous kitchen had been small and cramped, but the rear extension created a spacious 240 square foot kitchen-dining area. She and Martin selected a stone grey gloss finish for all the cupboards, doors and kitchen units along with a quartz blanco stella worktop from Plymouth-based Mayflower Stone. A striking red splashback supplied by Armada Glass perfectly complements the cool grey colour scheme. “I love bling,”said Judith,”and the worktop has a fantastic sparkly effect. I even managed to find matching floor tiles.”

Additional features included a Quooker tap providing constant boiling water, pop up electrical sockets, LED plinth lighting and undercounter lighting for a breakfast bar area – part of a large central island which also accommodates an induction hob by NEFF. The range of new appliances also includes a NEFF combination microwave and single oven featuring slide and hide door with telescopic shelf and warming drawer. One of Judith’s favourite features is the full length Artline pull out larder with a series of spacious shelves which provides a huge amount of storage space for jars, cans, packets and much more. “I love my new larder,”said Judith. “Everything is instantly visible - no hunting around the back of cupboards looking for a long lost bottle of sauce,” she said. KF Kitchens team of fitters and trade specialists ensured that the whole installation was undertaken with the minimum of fuss. “Their fitter Peter was brilliant,” said Judith. “He installed all the bedroom furniture and then moved on to the kitchen when the builders had finished the major works. “Nothing was too much trouble for him and he did an excellent job. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending KF Kitchens to anyone who is thinking about having a new bedroom or kitchen,” she added. Martin had the last word: “This has given us a fantastic new lease of life!”

New sculpture commemorates 75th anniv A new sculpture at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Blitz, as well as highlight the museum’s imminent expansion. ‘Here is Where We Came From’ by artist Holly Davey is a Plymouth Arts Centre commission delivered in partnership with Plymouth City Council’s Arts and Heritage Service. Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery was one of the few buildings to survive the World War Two bombing and is about to embark on a major redevelopment currently known as the History Centre. For Here is Where We Came From, the delicate pottery usually displayed in one

of the large glass cabinets on the museum’s balcony will be replaced with rubble. The violence of this shift in contents reflects the layers of history the museum has witnessed and the central role it has played in shaping the city’s futures, from post-war reconstruction to a new vision of Plymouth as a city of culture. The work will be launched at the start of this year’s Plymouth History Festival and will remain on display throughout the summer. Holly Davey’s practice involves working closely with ideas around objects, collections and memory, especially hidden social histories. As well as Plymouth’s wartime experiences, Here is

A dyslexic Plymouth teenager who struggled to find his feet at school is now excelling in his new career as a plastering apprentice, thanks to Skills Group’s Learn2Work programme. After leaving school at 16, Jordan Newport, from West Park, joined Plymouth-based Skills Group and began their Learn2Work programme in construction. Learn2Work is a full-time, pre-apprenticeship course specifically designed to prepare youngsters to take on an apprenticeship or employment in a specific industry sector. The aim is to develop the necessary skills needed to get a job in a given profession. The course also includes maths, English, ICT, health and safety, and first aid – all of which employers say are critical to success in the workplace. A key part of the course is a work placement with a local employer, so participants can get first-hand experience of working. Once completed, Skills Group match the students with a local employer that has an apprenticeship vacancy. Skills Group is celebrating the success of its Learn2Work programme with more than 40 construction students taking this year. All of the youngsters who have completed the construction course have since been employed as apprentices by Skills Group employers – a 100% success rate. Jordan, who is now working as an apprentice for C&P Plastering Ltd, based in Plymouth, said: “Nothing really clicked for me at school, I found it hard. I had reading problems and all sorts, and the school didn’t really help me. “Then I got involved with Skills Group and did the Learn2Work in construction. That course helped me with everything, including my English, and it really boosted my confidence. Now I’m working as a plastering apprentice and feel much happier. I know I have a support network behind me.” Paul Pomeroy, director of C&P Plastering Ltd, said Jordan had excelled with developing his hand skills and that he was delighted with his progression. Paul said: “Jordan is a really great lad and we always work in teams so this has greatly built his confidence. “Skills Group apprentices are way ahead of the game when it comes to additional skills. We help our apprentices as much as we possibly can at C&P Plastering, to ensure they are equipped with the latest skills within the trade.” Skills Group’s Learn2Work programme is available in the construction, childcare, engineering and automotive, hairdressing and sport and leisure sectors. Mandy Kerslake, Skills Group’s apprenticeship manager, said: “For a youngster who finds school difficult, whatever the reasons, knowing what to do when they leave can be very hard, and not everyone is ready to step into the workplace as soon as they’ve finished their GCSEs. “Our Learn2Work programme gives them the foundation they need to get on the career ladder. It focuses on industry specific skills as well as helping them develop key employability skills. Students can start at any time during the year, and as soon as they are ready we will encourage them to undertake a work placement, and support them through it. “We designed Learn2Work to help get youngsters into apprenticeships, and are obviously delighted with our 100% success rate!” Learners are given their own uniform, any personal protection equipment and a training kit free of charge. They are also entitled to claim a travel allowance for attending the Skills Group training centre, and in addition are given a free breakfast to kick-start their day.

Rebecca Roberts was born in Plymouth and has lived here for most of her life. Currently based as an ‘artist in residence’ at Plymouth School of Creative Arts, she loves the fact that she works and lives close to the sea. She told me: "I find the West Country very inspiring. It’s great to be able to walk to the sea and then just jump in a car and drive 20 minutes to get to the moors. "Such contrasts in scenery bring out different emotions and for me underline and affirm my belief in God and His creation. At the moment it is the coast that is influencing my work the waves and pebbles on the beaches, the smoothness from being washed by the sea. "I could sit and look at the coastline for hours at a time, it is constantly changing, no two waves or pebbles are the same. I love the texture that nature is so good at producing, the strata in the rocks, weathering of wood along the coastline, lichen growing on walls and rocks, the list is endless!" I asked Rebecca when her interest in ceramics started. She enthusiastically told me about her education at Plymstock School. "I had a brilliant Art teacher called Mr Shuter who introduced me to the joy of working with clay. He was so encouraging and I moved from Art GCSE to an A level that was set within a 3D based syllabus.

"I progressed on to Plymouth Art College straight from doing my A Levels and gained an ND and HND in ceramics. It was after leaving college that I set up my first business ‘Beautiful Feet Ceramics’. (On the bottom of each piece Rebecca produces is a tiny stamp of footprints) "I got married and had children and put my art work aside for a while. Then, a couple of years ago, I began to acknowledge that I missed working with clay. "I attended an open day at the Art College in Plymouth and had some interesting conversations with the technicians in the ceramics workshop. It felt amazing to be back there and I knew I needed to push doors to see where they would lead. "The outcome was that I was accepted onto the degree course for ceramics. The college said that I could do a one year top up degree, which I jumped at. I graduated in July 2015 and it was one of the happiest days of my life so far! "My degree work was very different to the work I am producing now, though at the same time still connected to texture and the natural way clay behaves. "I am not really sure how this is going to play out but I have lots of ideas buzzing around my head, so it’s an exciting time. Finding new places to exhibit and sell my work is also something I am working on. Currently I am part of an exhibition at The Gallery at Hannahs at SealeHayne until June 26 and I have a stall at The Crocadan Farm producers fair which started on May 21 but goes on until June 18. "In the future I would love to set up a community kiln room and workshop space, she added.

HEALTH MATTERS Dr Phil Jinks and Charlotte Thompson of Armada Dental

New service at Armada Aesthetics is something to smile about Armada Dental Practice in Plymouth is offering a brand new service, with the launch in June of facial aesthetic treatments. Dr Phil Jinks, head of the practice in Greenbank Avenue, St Judes, says Armada Aesthetics complements the work they’ve been doing for many years in enhancing people’s natural smiles and that they’re ideally equipped in terms of specialist skills and the surgery’s facilities to offer the treatment. “It’s a natural progression for the surgery, which has offered high quality dental treatment since the mid-1970s,” he said. “We’ve seen big changes in what people expect and this adds to what we can offer to patients. “This sort of treatment is increasingly popular with both men and women and to us it makes sense for them to seek this treatment from specialists in a clinical environment.” The new service, which is also available to people who aren’t registered with Armada Dental, follows the arrival of facial aesthetic practitioner Charlotte Thompson. Charlotte is highly experienced in delivering facial aesthetics treatments, previously providing this treatment daily at her last dental practice in Essex. She’ll be offering muscle relaxing treatments to reduce wrinkles and lines around the eyes and forehead, and dermal filling treatment to add volume around the lips: “Dental professionals have an extensive knowledge of facial anatomy,” said Charlotte. “Our training focuses on the muscle, nerve and blood supply to the head and neck. We feel as health professionals our training places us in an ideal position to treat this area. “In addition, we adhere to a strict cross infection control policy and are registered with the Care Quality Commission. All the products we use are sourced from reputable pharmacists.” The first step for those who are considering the enhancement is to book a free, no obligation consultation. The session takes around 30 minutes and the process includes an assessment from Dr Jinks, for added reassurance. Each case is viewed individually and, in line with General Medical Council recommendations, no treatment is performed on the day. Instead, patients are given time to

46\

The Plymouth Magazine June 2016

go away and think about it. “People tell us their concerns and we give them all the options available to them,” said Charlotte. “And if someone isn’t suitable for the treatment, such as pregnant women for example, we’ll tell them.” Treatment costs start at £200. Depending on the type and extent of the work, patients can expect facial aesthetic treatment to take at least half an hour and possibly quite a bit longer: “People say it’s far less painful and stressful than dental treatment though,” said Charlotte. She added: “We go for a natural, subtle enhancement, but patients will really notice a difference. One of the frequent comments I get is that people feel refreshed. I have it done myself and I love it – I don’t look as tired. “A schoolteacher friend of mine, who had some lines removed in the area just above and between her eyes, said her pupils told her she no longer looked angry all the time because she wasn’t frowning!” After each treatment, a review takes place two weeks later: “It’s a very thorough process,” said Charlotte. “If any fine-tuning is required, we can do this following the review.” None of the facial aesthetic treatments are permanent; the enhancement around the eyes lasts for around three months, the dermal filling approximately 10 months: “It’s good that it’s not permanent,” said Charlotte. “It means that if you decide it’s not for you, then it doesn’t need to be.” Dr Jinks says clients will receive the same high standard of care as the practice’s dental patients: “We pride ourselves on providing the best dental treatment and we want to extend that sort of quality to our facial aesthetic service. All advice given is in the best interests of the patient and we work in accordance with all the strict guidelines.” Ring the main surgery reception to book a free consultation. Practice opening hours are 9am to 7pm on Mondays to accommodate people after work, 9am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Thursday, and 9am to 3pm on Fridays.

TRAVEL MATTERS

Wildlife and wonderful scenary make it a holiday of a lifetime in South Africa

Spectacular views at Table Mountain

This month’s article is by Claire and Mark from Derriford about their amazing holiday to South Africa. South Africa is a place that has been on our wish list for some years and we decided that we wanted an 'experience' holiday. The attraction was seeing animals in their own habitat. We did a lot of research but nothing comes remotely close to describing how truly awesome it is to be so close to them. We started our holiday at Lion Sands in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, which is part of Kruger National Park. We were very well looked after and went out on two game drives a day, one early in the morning and the other late afternoon around dusk. The game drives are in open Land Rovers with a ranger, tracker and up to six passengers. Our stay was in a quiet period, so we were upgraded to a different lodge, and were the only people in the Land Rover for most of the game drives. They thought we were on honeymoon, much to our amusement. We did our first game drive on the evening of the day we arrived. Having taken two flights to get there, including an overnight one, we started the drive a bit sleepy. This didn’t last long as we soon saw a young male leopard, followed by hyena, a bush baby and a lioness with two young cubs. The animals were not Tree house luxury in the bush remotely bothered by our presence and walked within about six feet of the Land Rover. During other game drives we saw various groups of buffalo, giraffe, zebras, wild boar, monkeys, hippos, mongoose, elephants, including some babies, and two different prides of lions. One pride had killed a buffalo and were taking it in turns to eat their fill, with a group of vultures in nearby trees waiting to finish off the carcass. The lions that had eaten were lying away from the carcass and rolling over on their backs. We commented that

48\

The Plymouth Magazine June 2016

this was like domestic cat behaviour but the ranger said that they had eaten too much, and it was uncomfortable for them to lie on their stomachs. We saw a rare sight of mating leopards during one drive. Firstly, we saw the male and then the female come out of the bush. Normally they tend to be on their own, so the ranger knew they were going to mate, and enthusiastically told us to be ready to video the event. Throughout the game drives, and at the lodge, there are lots of impala, nyala and monkeys wandering around. One day, when we were relaxing at lunch time, we saw an elephant walk past in front of the room and cross the river. Our stay at Lion Sands included a night in a tree house in the bush. We were dropped off during an evening game drive so that we could see the sunset from the tree house, and were left with a fantastic picnic to keep us going until 6am the next day. The most notable thing about the night in the tree house was all the sounds and lying awake listening to lions roaring close by. We left Lion Sands and flew up to Livingstone to see Victoria Falls. Again, we saw monkeys, giraffe and zebra roaming freely. We did the Devil’s Pool swim at the top of the falls, which was very safely organised and a welcome cooling experience, as it was very hot. The next morning we got up early and walked into Zimbabwe, across the railway bridge that was in the recent Gryff Rhys-Jones programme on Africa. As the falls are on the Zambian side of the gorge, they are best viewed from the Victoria Falls National Park on the other side of the gorge. If this appeals, it is best to get a combined visa at the airport when you land as it is cheaper and quicker to go through immigration when visiting Zimbabwe. The next stop on our tour was Port Elizabeth, where we hired a car ready to drive the garden route to Cape Town, with various

SPACES AVA ILABLE FOR 2 YEAR OLDS IN SEPT 2016

stops on route. Another amazing experience was Knysna Elephant Park where we bought buckets of fruit and fed the elephants. They line the elephants up behind a bar and you are allocated one to feed. Mark’s was the big bolshy matriarch and I had a smaller elephant next to her. They were very gentle, but you do briefly lose your fingers up the end of the trunk when they take the food. We were then able to wander around, stroke the elephants and talk to the guides. The park takes in sick and abandoned elephants as well as those that would otherwise have been culled when their numbers get too many in the national parks. It is possible to sleep at the park and get married there, which makes the place sound very commercialised but it doesn’t feel that way there as there is so much wide open and natural space. We stopped at Oudtshoorn for a few days, where we had more animal encounters, including a visit to Cango Wildlife Ranch, which is similar to Knysna Elephant Park, but it looks after a wide range of different species. It is possible to be lowered in a cage in a pool of crocodiles and have handling experiences with various reptiles. We opted to meet servals, baby cheetahs, a tame adult cheetah and lemurs. We were also able to go into the enclosures and stroke the animals, accompanied by handlers and a photographer. At no time did we feel threatened or in danger. We could stroke the baby cheetahs quite freely with the caution that they had yet to learn limits, and if they bite it won’t be a playful nip. The adult cheetah was very placid with a very loud purr that sounded like a motor. She particularly enjoyed having the back of her head scratched. The lemurs jumped all over us, sat on our shoulders and checked our hair for bugs! At the end of the experience, we were given photos in albums, and on a CD. The photographer was also happy to take photos using our own cameras. The emphasis was on the experience for us with the animals, rather than charging extra for things. On the day we left Oudtshoorn, we got up early to see meerkats wake up. We met the guides at 5.30am and were taken to one of their many dens. The guides were very informative and had even heard of the Compare the Meerkat adverts. Again, we were very close to them as we were sat around their mound in deck chairs. It was wonderful to see their behaviour in their own environment. Our last stop before Cape Town was Hermanus, a beautiful coastal town. Southern right whales come to the bay to mate and have their calves. We have been on whale watching trips before, where the most that has been seen is tail flukes waving about, but here we were amazed to see whales breaching in the bay from the hotel on the cliff top. South Africa is a wonderful place to visit with very friendly and welcoming local people, who do their best to make your visit unforgettable for the best of reasons. There is extreme poverty as well as affluence, which does lead to crime, but we had no problems at all. Just be aware of your surroundings and use common sense. Anthony very helpfully recommended a waterfront hotel in Cape Town, so we were able to go out safely after dark. If visiting Cape Town, go up Table Mountain on your first clear day. Book online in advance for Robben Island and allow time for the trip to be rearranged if seas are rough. Do go up Signal Hill and see the sunset from there. We hope this has given you a flavour for this wonderful holiday and thank you for reading. www.cornerstonevision.com

FAMILY MATTERS

Learning tricks to deal with tricky toddlers! From that cute little baby sleeping in your arms to a manic little one tearing around your house and destroying your property. No wonder why many parents and carers feel like they are losing the plot. The favourite word is always ‘no’ and you can’t take your eyes off of them for more than one second or the entire contents of the kitchen will most surely be all over the floor. The toddler stage is one of the most stressful times for dealing with children. It’s a time for pushing every boundary, refusing to have nappies changed, go to bed on time or eat anything that looks unfamiliar. In short it’s exhausting. Having to be very skilled at decoding unrecognizable words is also part of the job as most of what they say doesn’t make sense but failing to understand is likely to result in a massive temper tantrum So what can you do? Well firstly find some good friends and family members who will understand and not be critical towards you for occasionally getting it wrong or having to give in because you are so exhausted or stressed. At the end of the day you are only

50\

human. Try and focus on things that will make a difference to your day. Toddlers love mess and learning through play. They are going through a key time of developing their speech and understanding so providing things that facilitate this will increase their confidence and decrease their frustration. You may have tried many of these things before but with the nicer weather coming they often work better outdoors. Water is a massive attraction to toddlers, I’m sure we have all had the experience of the toddler have their own water-play session with the water in the toilet. If you are in luck someone flushed the toilet first! Toddlers learn so much through water; volume, texture, temperature and movement to name but a few. You can provide, a small paddling pool, buckets, washing up bowls, plastic cups, old shampoo/ bubble bath bottles and watering cans to ehance the experience and lengthen the play time. Large stubby paintbrushes or even clean decorating brushes with clear water will allow your toddler to slap water all over the garden without causing any damage.

By Nyree Squires, managing director at Noah's Ark Childcare Centres

To extend the experience more you can add a small amount of water based paint for colour, glitter, pebbles, shells, sand or plastic animals. If your little one can blow without accidentally drinking everything then a large amount of bubble bath and straws can allow them to create their own bubbles in the mixture. Small clothes and baby dolls can be added for a pretend bathing experience or you can encourage them to clean any of their larger or smaller plastic toys such as play cars and then dry them off with an old tea-towel. Paint can of course be very messy but if it’s outside there’s not so much damage that can be done. Buy good quality water based poster paint as the cheaper varieties tend to stain more. Find some old wall paper and roll it out with a couple of trays or washing up bowls to put the separate colours of paint in. Help your toddler to place their feet separately in one colour at a time and walk up and down the wallpaper covering it in different coloured footprints. This can make a lovely keepsake or lead on to other activities such as free painting, chalking or cutting out footprints. The best thing about it is your toddler can move around whilst creating a picture which is what they like to do best. I hope you find some of the ideas useful and that if nothing else this article will have highlighted to you that you are not alone. Local children’s centres and nurseries also have the expertise or knowledge to point in in the right direction for extra help. For some families funding is also available for two year olds to start nursery the term after their second birthday.

Treating the family to scones Summer is the perfect time for an afternoon tea with fresh homemade scones. This recipe makes about 8 – 10 very quick, easy to make, scones. Children love making them because the process is very tactile. You won’t need your mixer for this – just a bowl and your fingers!

ENERGY MATTERS

Ernesettle community solar – it’s built, now own it! The award-winning Plymouth Energy Community (PEC) is doing great things! They are celebrating completion of Plymouth’s largest solar array and the launch of their third community share offer – inviting anyone over the age of 16 to ‘co-own’ the array by purchasing community shares. PEC, set up in June 2013 as a Community Benefit Society and with the support of Plymouth City Council, aims to help local people transform how they buy, use and generate energy. The city aims to reduce CO² emissions by 50% by 2031 and faces significant energy challenges with over 13%

of households living in fuel poverty and a large number of poorly-insulated and energy-inefficient properties. PEC has three key goals: reducing bills and fuel poverty, improving energy efficiency and generating more renewable heat and power. PEC has grown into a big-thinking, fast-moving communityowned operation with over 1200 members and a volunteer board of highly-skilled directors. In 2014, they set up PEC Renewables to fund, build and manage renewable energy installations and allow collective local ownership. It has already raised £1,450,000 in community shares from

ENERGY MATTERS over 300 investor members. As a result, 30 schools and local organisations now have solar PV schemes on their roofs, including Plymouth Life Centre. This saves them £90,000 per year on electricity bills and provides a valuable educational resource. Surplus income generated goes back to PEC to support its grassroots activities. Over the last three years, PEC has built the capacity of the organisation and done a lot to support local fuel poverty projects. They offer an extensive range of energy advice and support services targeted at low income, vulnerable and fuel-poor households. This includes their 'shout and the energy team can help out' campaign, training volunteers and helping people reduce energy bills and become more energy savvy in their homes. They have four full-time advisors who can help specifically with gas and electricity debt, and home improvements targeted to improve the health The Plymouth Energy Community team of those living in cold, damp homes. PEC’s work has supported over 11,200 households, saving over £341,000 from annual bills, and helped residents clear £155,000 of energy debt. The success of their projects has them a shelf-full of awards including an Observer Ethical Award 2015; UK Social Enterprise Award 2014; and RegenSW Green Energy Award 2014. Switching on their latest solar array in Ernesettle means that PEC has smashed their target to deliver 5 Megawatts of

locally-owned clean energy generation, three years early! They teamed up with Four Greens Community Trust (FGCT) and Plymouth City Council to build Plymouth’s largest solar array on derelict land in Ernesettle. Built using a short-term loan, 16,000 panels are already generating enough electricity to meet the annual needs of over 1000 local homes. To maximise community benefit and keep ownership local, PEC Renewables (sister organisation of PEC) is now financing the project through a longer-term loan from Plymouth City Council and community shares. Plymouth people are able to ‘co-own’ some of this solar project by buying shares. By investing £50 or more, investors earn a fair return on their investment intended at 6% per year and become a member of a multi award-winning organisation. In addition, FGCT will earn a long-term income supporting local economic development in Ernesettle, Honicknowle, Manadon and Whitleigh and help approximately £2,900,000 of income for PEC to continue to tackle the challenges of energy costs, fuel poverty and climate change in Plymouth.

GARDENING MATTERS

It’s back to the Fu So summer is here and no matter the weather, there is one group of plants which are often overlooked, that will look great and perform really well regardless of the weather. Those plants are Fuchsias. Fuchsias have been around for years and had always been a favourite for hanging baskets and patio pots, but suddenly fell out of fashion. Often considered old fashioned and blowsy, Fuchsias started to fall out of favour. The fact that many popular varieties are tender, and only half hardy, meant that many varieties and collections were lost during unexpected, severe winters, such as 1987 and 2010, so the vast choice and range shrunk. Fuchsia choice became limited and interest in them dwindled, but breeders have been working hard to build collections back up, create new varieties and reintroduce varieties that were lost. One group of Fuchsias that deserve their spot in the garden are the hardy Fuchsias. Often thought of as a hedging plant or a straggly, untouched, unnoticed plant at the deepest part of the border, they are perceived as dull, boring and ignored and taken for granted. The most common hardy varieties found in gardens tend to be Fuchsia Riccartonii and Fuchsia Magellanica. These hardy and tough stalwarts need very little attention and can stand to be neglected, but they are poor representatives of the wonderful and varied varieties that are available. They have long, slender red sepals, and small purple petals underneath. The flowers quite frankly are rather dull and haven’t helped improve the popularity of Fuchsias. There is a wide range of hardy Fuchsias that have interesting, beautiful and unique flowers that are worth a spot in any garden. They’ll flower for months on end and require very little attention and the best thing of all is that they don’t require deadheading. The dead flowers simply fall from the plant on their own. An exquisite Fuchsia is Lady Bacon; it grows to 90cm (3 ft) in height and spread and glowers all summer long. It bears quite long flowers that have blue petals sitting inside vivid pinky red sepals that fade to bright white. The colours together are quite striking, as are the sheer abundance of flowers produced. It will produce flowers continually from early summer through to late autumn. For something that has more of a traditional, blousey look to it, Fuchsia Garden News is a superb hardy double with white sepals with an abundance of magenta ruffled petals. The flowers are medium sized and are produced in multitude, it grows to a height and spread of 50cm (20ins). A Fuchsia that has large unusual foliage is Fuchsia Hatschbachii. It has large, slender, elegant looking leaves that add an exotic, tropical look to the garden. It is also evergreen which is unusual amongst fuchsias. It has arching, graceful stems that become adorned

in typical, red, slender Fuchsia flowers. It grows to a height and spread of 1.2m (4ft). Another interesting foliage Fuchsia is Genii. It has acid yellow leaves that fade to golden green and is a great plant for brightening up a dull shady corner. The flowers it produces are brightly coloured with magenta sepals and purple petals. They contrast beautifully with the foliage and it is a real eye catcher of a plant. It grows to a height and spread of 90cm (3ft). A good reliable favourite is Beacon. Beacon has vibrant, single mauve petals with backward facing scarlet sepals. It is attractive without being blowsy and it is a firm favourite of bees. It is great in pots or the garden and flowers all summer long. It grows to a height and spread of 60cm (2ft), so it is a more compact variety. Fuchsias are extremely versatile and can grow in full sun to shade – as long as they get some light they will perform well. They like a moist, fertile soil that doesn’t water log, but also doesn’t completely dry out and perform well in most garden soils. Although hardy Fuchsias are frost hardy, a hard winter can kill the top growth, but don’t give up on them. They will re-grow from the roots in the spring. To help get through the winter with ease, give them a few inches mulch of compost or bark around the base and avoid pruning them until late March. Feed them in the spring with a general purpose fertiliser such as fish, blood and bone and when they start to flower feed them with tomato feed fortnightly. Happy Gardening!
