“I visited a number of showrooms and eventually found KF Kitchens who had an excellent display of fitted bedrooms,” she said.

“Simon from KF Kitchens could not have been more helpful and he designed the range of bespoke fitted wardrobes, along with bedside lockers and a matching door onto Martin’s walkin wardrobe.

“We were really pleased with the end result but the best was yet to come,” said Judith. “I fell completely in love with one of the kitchens on display in their incredible showroom and I knew that anything else would be second best.

“I was like a child in a sweet shop looking at all the amazing gadgets, appliances and finishing touches that KF Kitchens have available,” she added.

Their previous kitchen had been small and cramped, but the rear extension created a spacious 240 square foot kitchen-dining area.

She and Martin selected a stone grey gloss finish for all the cupboards, doors and kitchen units along with a quartz blanco stella worktop from Plymouth-based Mayflower Stone. A striking red splashback supplied by Armada Glass perfectly complements the cool grey colour scheme.

“I love bling,”said Judith,”and the worktop has a fantastic sparkly effect. I even managed to find matching floor tiles.”

Additional features included a Quooker tap providing constant boiling water, pop up electrical sockets, LED plinth lighting and undercounter lighting for a breakfast bar area – part of a large central island which also accommodates an induction hob by NEFF. The range of new appliances also includes a NEFF combination microwave and single oven featuring slide and hide door with telescopic shelf and warming drawer.

One of Judith’s favourite features is the full length Artline pull out larder with a series of spacious shelves which provides a huge amount of storage space for jars, cans, packets and much more.

“I love my new larder,”said Judith. “Everything is instantly visible - no hunting around the back of cupboards looking for a long lost bottle of sauce,” she said.

KF Kitchens team of fitters and trade specialists ensured that the whole installation was undertaken with the minimum of fuss.

“Their fitter Peter was brilliant,” said Judith.

“He installed all the bedroom furniture and then moved on to the kitchen when the builders had finished the major works.

“Nothing was too much trouble for him and he did an excellent job. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending KF Kitchens to anyone who is thinking about having a new bedroom or kitchen,” she added.

Martin had the last word: “This has given us a fantastic new lease of life!”

Crucial vote and the effect on Plymouth This edition went to press a few days before the crucial EU Referendum vote - so by the time you read this we will all know whether we are staying in or leaving.

Whatever the outcome it’s fair to say that the campaign has probably led to more confusion than clarity.

It is to be hoped that the result will not lead to a slowing down of the significant progress that we have seen in Plymouth in recent years.

The city has been flourishing thanks to a buoyant economy, falling unemployment, low interest rates and massive investment in new developments in Plymouth.

Small to medium sized family businesses are undoubtedly the backbone of the local economy, providing thousands of jobs and stability. Hopefully those businesses will not be facing increased taxes or higher interest rates as a result of the EU vote.

We love to champion the cause of local independent businesses - largely because we’re one of them - and it’s great to report their successes and achievements.

In this issue we feature two of them - Victoria Sewart Jewellery and The Chancel Wine Bar and Bistro – both of which have achieved significant milestones recently.

Royal Navy dinghy sailors celebrate epic voyage

Two intrepid Royal Navy sailors have completed an epic three-night sail in a two-man open dinghy - raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process.

When Hooe couple Phil and Jackie Barnett decided their outdated bathroom needed a complete makeover they asked a number of companies to quote for the work.

The stand-out choice was local family firm Dream Bathrooms, which is run by Steve Short. The couple had read about Dream Bathrooms in the Plymouth Magazine and had no hesitation in appointing them to do the work.

Retired Ministry of Defence police officer Phil said: “Steve was brilliant in advising us on the best way to make the most of the space available and explained everything simply and clearly.”

Much of the space in the 12 square metre en-suite bathroom was previously taken up by a bath and separate shower, which had a leak.

Jackie said: “We never used the bath as both Phil and I prefer to shower so that was one of the main reasons we wanted a complete change.”

Steve came up with detailed plans for the refurbishment and then helped Phil and Jackie choose stylish fixtures and fittings, including new floor tiles and wall tiles.

During the two week project in May, the bathroom

was completely stripped bare - including removing a wall - to enable Steve and his team of skilled tradesmen and fitters to undertake the work.

“We had to replace some of the floorboards, completely re-plaster the room and install new wiring and plumbing,” said Steve.

The Dream Bathrooms team installed a huge new walk-in shower, complete with large square rain shower head and art deco style shower controls.

A range of Hacienda black bathroom units were fitted along one wall, along with a marble wash basin and granite effect worktops. A huge bespoke mirror was fitted above the units to create a sense of greater reflected space, while new downlighters added to the bright new look. A new radiator and heated towel rail were also installed.

Slate grey porcelain floor tiles and mottle grey wall tiles provided an overall stylish finish to the bathroom.

Phil and Jackie are delighted with the finished result.

“We love our new shower, especially the rain effect shower head,” said Jackie. Phil added: “We couldn’t be happier with Dream Bathrooms in terms of the quality of their work and customer service.”

Victoria celebrating 10 years at her Barbican jewel Set among the cobbled stones of Plymouth’s historic Barbican, Victoria Sewart Contemporary Jewellery Gallery and School is a real gem of a find for those looking for high quality pieces crafted by inspirational designers.

The gallery has just celebrated its 10th anniversary, a testament not only to its popularity but also to Victoria’s sheer determination in overcoming the economic downturn and, in her biggest fight of all, breast cancer.

Victoria’s route to Number 39 Southside Street started with a Foundation course in art and design at what was then the Plymouth College of Art and Design. After getting a degree at the Birmingham School of Jewellery, she set up a business as a jeweller in the early 1990s, while also teaching part time at the college: “I loved all the work I was doing but when I did my Master’s Degree in 2005 I really had a think about things.

“I’d always wanted to have a gallery and one day I was down here on the Barbican and I came across this place.

It had just been vacated so the lease was available and I thought ‘right, I’m having that’. I remember the day I opened the gallery, it was June 17 2006, and it was like a dream come true.

“And here we are, 10 years later! In those 10 years we’ve had at least two recessions and two years after opening, I

was told I had breast cancer.”

After being diagnosed in June 2008, Victoria underwent surgery to remove the tumour. As part of her treatment, she had a powerful course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which proved successful: “And now I am completely clear,” said Victoria. “The five year remission period ended in August 2013 so I can safely say that I’ve won that battle.”

Victoria managed to keep the gallery open throughout her illness: “I kept myself as healthy as possible so I could get to work. When I started out I had just one part time member of staff and a Saturday girl, so I had a lot of help from family and friends who covered the times when I was too ill to come in.”

Now, Victoria has an assistant manager, Maxine Walker, and two part-time staff, Stevie-Leigh Smith, a jewellery graduate from Plymouth College of Art, and Stevie Ann Thompson, who’s just completed the second year of her jewellery degree at the college. “All of the staff are jewellers and all went to the college. In fact, I taught Maxine when I was a teacher there.

I also tell people we have another “staff” member here, too, and that’s Martha my dog. She’s my real jewel!”

To mark the 10-year milestone, Victoria threw a party at the gallery on June 17 and a 10th anniversary exhibition will run until September 5, showcasing eight of the designers who were among the very first to supply the gallery.

BUSINESS MATTERS Right from the outset Victoria has supported local designers: “All of the designers are British and many are from Devon and Cornwall.

We have so much talent in the South West, designers who are creating high quality, inspirational pieces.

“I know my designers personally and I know how their work is made. I feel it’s important to know the story behind the pieces: the design, material, process and the person. And we’ve stuck to our guns in keeping the gallery contemporary, not mainstream. I feel very strongly about that.”

From modern and stylish to colourful and quirky, and made from materials across the spectrum, the gallery’s pieces are proving more popular than ever: “We’ve got loads of lovely customers from across the South West.

Some of them say ‘I only buy my jewellery from here,’ and others come back from other parts of the UK after they’ve been here on holiday. That’s down to the fabulous designers we stock and because we’re constantly refreshing what we’ve got so there’s always something interesting.”

The gallery is over two floors, while on the top floor is the workshop where Victoria holds her popular beginners, intermediary and advanced jewellery courses. Each of the daytime courses runs over 10 weeks, with one lesson a week, and all workshops have a maximum of four people. Taster workshops are held at weekends for those who want to give it a try before booking the longer courses.

And for couples about to get married, Victoria holds a Make Your Own Wedding Rings workshop: “I have a passion

for teaching, I love it, and this particular workshop is great fun. A couple will come in on a Saturday with no experience whatsoever and they’ll leave with their wedding rings. Couples tell me they find it a unifying, romantic experience and the rings mean so much more to them. I encourage them to be artistic, not to go for just a plain band.”

But don’t worry if you’d like an individualistic engagement or wedding ring and don’t feel confident enough to make your own – there are plenty to choose from in the gallery.

While the anniversary exhibition is a reflection of the first 10 years, a month-long exhibition starting in September looks forward: “About 10 of my lecturers from Plymouth and Birmingham will be exhibiting their work and it’s very progressive, it’s art jewellery. It’s the direction I want to take the exhibitions from now on. And there will be more solo exhibitions.”

Victoria added: “To be honest I can’t believe it’s been 10 years, those years have flown by. Somebody said to me the other day ‘oh, you must feel really proud’ and I thought ‘yes, actually, I do feel proud. And I feel very excited about the next 10 years.”

Dance and social whirl guaranteed at Lemon Frog’s new dance and fitness venue A little bit of Latin America has been recreated in the heart of Plymouth, with the opening of Lemon Frog Dance Company’s brand new dance and fitness venue.

After having to use several halls dotted around Plymouth for the past 13 years, owner Kevan Kennedy has now converted a huge space in Peverell into a bespoke dance hall at one end and at the other, a tree-lined ‘street’ with brightly coloured houses and cafes, based on the town of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico, where Kevan used to live.

The dance and fitness venue, in New Victoria House, Weston Park Road, provides a permanent home for all of the company’s dance classes and also has smaller studios for private dance tuition and workshops. The tables and chairs in the street café mean that everyone can socialise after the classes. There’s even a large room above the studios which has been transformed into a gym for Kevan’s son Louis, who runs the Lemon Frog Fitness Company.

When Plymouth Magazine visited the venue, the finishing touches were being applied, with the street and café flooring still to be fitted.

“This is an amazing space, it’s given us everything we were looking for,” said Kevan. “Up until now we’ve had to rely on other places being available on a week to week basis. What we have here is perfect.

“We’ve been looking for a permanent base for a couple of years and spotted this a few months ago,” he added. “We only got the keys in May and then it was a case of getting stuck in to get it ready in time for our opening on 6 June. We started with a clean slate and a lot of our dance students have come in to help out with the transformation. It’s been great seeing it all come together.”

Kevan lived in San Juan for 10 years in the 1990s and 2000s, when he was an independent business consultant helping companies to grow. Now as a qualified dance teacher, it’s hardly surprising his dance classes have a very Latin American feel: “We have salsa, cha cha cha, bachata and Argentine tango as well as the jive and the Charleston, all up tempo and all great fun.”

Kevan and his two dance partners, Ada and Julie, host four one-hour dance classes every weekday evening, while Kevan holds private classes during the day. Kevan also has workshops, focusing on improving specific elements, such as lifting, leading and following, turning and spinning, musicality and building your core for dancing.

Kevan. “It’s not just so they can improve their dancing and keep fit, it’s also a great social activity.

“We have a fabulous mix of men and women of all ages from late teens to a chap who’s in his 70s. Some want to become top dancers, others want to keep fit and have fun, and for most, the social side of dancing is very important.

A lot come along on their own, so there’s no need to worry about that.

“We have regular dance parties and we meet up and do things outside of the dance classes too. We also go for weekend walks,” he added.

The good news is that, according to Kevan, we can all dance: “For a start, it’s impossible for anyone to have two left feet. If you can walk, you have balance and balance is all you need to be able to dance. In that sense, your body knows how to dance. At first, we’ll walk you through the steps and we build from there. But everyone can learn how to dance at the level they want. That’s one of the reasons dancing is so popular, it ticks all the boxes really.

“We teach technique and the dancing is freestyle, not choreographed. And because it’s not a set course, people can come when they can. You can attend one class at a time but the more you attend, the more economical it is. If people think that dancing is something they might enjoy they can book a free 30-minute induction,” added Kevan.

Private classes include lessons for wedding couples wanting to perfect their first dance. For these, Kevan will choreograph the dance for them.

Which just leaves one question that remains to be answered: Why Lemon Frog? “That’s the Puerto Rican connection again,” explained Kevan. “The national animal of Puerto Rico is the Coqui frog. And I just thought Lemon Frog would be completely different!”

The Dapper Story Ed Tresloggett (riight) and Kevin Romaine

The Dappers are a Plymouthbased singing acoustic duo, who are attracting interest on the local music scene.

I caught up with one half of them, Ed Tresloggett, to find out more. Ed told me: ‘Kevin Romaine and I met in 2015 through a local drama group (The Tamaritans). We then appeared in a play together (A Man for all Seasons) which we performed at The Drum Theatre. Kevin was cast in the lead role of Thomas Moore and I was his good friend The Duke Art Matters of Norfolk. The play was a great with Kerry Cole success and we also remained friends off stage and developed our friendship through our mutual love of music.

We started playing together and soon the music was flowing freely and easily. I wrote some new songs alongside playing older original material. We also covered

songs we both liked in various styles: blues, jazz, folk, rock and funk. The covers have taken on their own identity and we’ve brought our own take on each song. This has made them interesting and fun. We like to make the covers sound different rather than replicating them. ‘ I asked Ed how these songs are being received. He lit up as he told me: ‘The response to the music has been excellent and we have been getting some really positive feedback from the public and the venues we have played.

As well as doing several places in Plymouth like The Millbridge, we travel all over the Southwest as far as St Ives over to the North Devon coast and into the South Hams and Dartmoor. ‘ I asked Ed about his partner in The Dappers, Kevin Romaine, he said: ‘Kevin is an amazing guitarist and he has a wide range of different styles and techniques that he uses including Wah Wah, slide and various guitar effects. He also sings harmony. Kevin has played in various bands over the years and his musical interests are eclectic, ranging from Metal through to Folk. We get on really well and the music and our musical relationship is getting stronger with the passing of time. ‘

Ed went on to tell me about his song writing: ‘The original songs are inspired from different areas. For instance, I wrote the song Stormbringer during a particular long hot summer where everyone was longing for a break in the weather. It also speaks about the need for change and transformation. Many of my songs are about regeneration and new life, revolving around metaphor and imagery bound up with nature. ‘ Ed and Kevin have a certain panache in their appearance and on stage presentation. Ed smiled as he told me: ‘My wife came up with the name The Dappers as we dress in a dapper style. There is a certain spruced up, debonair look about us. We are available and affordable for weddings, events and functions.

Situated upstairs on the mezzanine floor, the new restaurant adds to the market’s already diverse mix of retail outlets including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, pet supplies, hardware, clothing and footwear through to takeaway food, cafes and eateries.

Situated in Plymouth’s independent quarter in the West End of the town, the market is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, something that really resonated with @ Kitchen’s owner and head chef, Prissanda Hosakum.

Prissanda, or Pond as she is known to her friends, spent several years as a chef at award-winning Japanese restaurant Roka in London before deciding it was time for her to set up on her own.

She spent several months travelling around the country looking for a suitable town and venue for her new venture, before settling on Plymouth for a number of reasons, a key factor being the friendliness of the local people.

“Londoners are always in such a rush: everything and everybody is hectic” says Pond, “But as soon as I came to Plymouth I was bowled over by the friendliness of the people, the more relaxed pace of life and the wonderful fresh air.”

“I come from a small village in Thailand where everybody knows everybody else and being in the market is just like being at home: everyone says hello and they are so welcoming. It’s a great place to eat and shop.” @Kitchen is all about healthy food, made with fresh, local ingredients and Pond has had to look no further than her fellow market traders for much of her produce: all of the fruit and vegetables she uses are sourced from the market: “I believe we should all support each other here in the market, which is easy when the quality of food and goods is so high.”

Pond added: “I’m hoping that our menu at @Kitchen will help people to think more about what they eat and choose food that not only looks, tastes and smells good but is nutritious too, something that is intrinsic in Vietnamese and Asian cooking. I also feel that Plymouth has a great future and want to be part of it, by bringing something different to the city and showing people that they don’t have to travel miles to find great food, it’s already here, on their doorstep.”

It’s exactly five years since they opened The Chancel in St Andrew Street and of all the memories they’ve banked since July 2011, the story of the lobster request is probably the one they share the most. Jamie takes it from the start: “I walked past this building one day, it had been empty for 18 months, and I thought it could be a really nice 11am to 6pm place, perfect for a daytime wine bar and café,” explained Jamie. “So we got it and opened it up as a café and bistro, just offering light snacks and tapas.

“But we’d only been open a matter of days when a gentleman enquired if we’d be able to do an evening meal of lobster for his 43rd wedding anniversary. It happened to fall on a Wednesday. We thought it’d be a bit odd for this couple to be sitting here all on their own so we put a blackboard up in the bar to say we’d be doing a surf and turf night with lobster and chateaubriand. Within three days it was sold out and we thought ‘right then, we’d better do food in the evening as well’.

“We very quickly had to put on an à la carte menu so by the end of that July we were doing food day and evening, which we hadn’t envisaged in our plans at all.”

The original team of three has since grown to 10 –“the Chancel family,” as Paula calls them, and together they’re raising a glass to five successful years.

Jamie, a qualified chef, fronts the kitchen team alongside chef Renata Kudlinska. He says the popularity is down to a combination of quality, service and atmosphere: “We serve great food, we’re not pretentious and we’re not overpriced.

We want people to keep coming back.

Much of the food is locally sourced and it’s all bought fresh every day: “Everything is cooked to order so people can ask for the dishes to have something added or taken away,” said Paula. “They get the meal that they want.”

The Chancel is over two floors; on the ground floor is the bar area where people like to meet for coffee and a chat or a bite to eat at lunchtime. It’s also a popular place for an after work drink in the late afternoon, when the tables and chairs outside also get the best of the sun. Downstairs is a lovely dining area for couples or friends to enjoy a relaxing meal.

The menu includes tapas, ciabattas and sandwiches for lighter bites; salads as a starter or a main; and a selection of vegetarian, seafood and meat mains. Among the most popular choices are the blue cheese, pear and walnut salad in a honey glaze; sea bass with local scallops; seafood platter, and fillet steak. The freshly made tapas, at three for £12, also go down extremely well. Dietary requirements are catered for and if something’s not on the menu, customers can ring in advance and the team will do all they can to source the produce.

There’s also a pre-theatre menu, £14.95 for two courses or £17.95 for three courses, with several menu choices to choose from.

But customers don’t have to eat; they’re equally welcome for a coffee or a drink: “The Chancel is whatever people want it to be,” said Paula. “Customers say it’s like the Cheers bar because everyone is so friendly. We know a lot of our

customers by name and they’ve all made friends among themselves.”

As we’re chatting in the bar area, one of the regular customers, Zahrah, comes in for a soft drink and volunteers her own story about The Chancel: “When I first came here I hadn’t been in Plymouth long and I didn’t know anyone. I came in on my own and since then I’ve made many friends here. It’s incredibly friendly and has a lovely atmosphere.”

The Chancel holds special theme nights to celebrate food from across the world and has just launched a wine club. For a £25 annual joint membership or £20 single membership, members get discounts at the wine tasting events that are held on the first Sunday of every month. They’ll also be entitled to other discounts including the 3x 50ml ‘wine flights’ where customers can sample three different wines. Club members will also get to try wines not on the wine list.

Regular events Blue cheese, pear and walnut salad include a quiz night on the second Monday of the month, hog roasts, and a Call My Wine Bluff wine tasting evening, with a professional wine taster and two ‘experts’ who talk nonsense! The bistro can cater for special occasions and has also started ‘Chancel on Tour’ outside catering for private functions. Where the Chancel has a big event – such as Burns Night – they use larger premises, such as Abbey Hall. As Jamie says: “We celebrate World Gin Day, Beaujolais Nouveau Day – we’ll celebrate any day.”

This month they’re celebrating The Chancel’s fifth anniversary: “These five years have been hard work,” said Paula. “You wouldn’t be able to put the hours in if you didn’t love doing it – and we do love what we’re doing, it’s good fun.

“But we couldn’t have achieved what we’ve done without our fantastic team. Our success is a tribute to everyone who works here.”

Jess Glynne’s Pavilions date

Chart topper singer songwriter Jess Glynne brings her Take Me Home tour to Plymouth Pavilions in November.

She rose to prominence as a featured artist on Clean Bandit’s single ‘Rather Be’ and Route 94’s ‘My Love’, both of which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in 2014.

Her debut solo single, ‘Right Here’ reached the top ten the same year.

In 2015, she became the second British female solo artist after Cheryl to have five number-one singles in the UK, following her solo releases ‘Hold My Hand’ and ‘Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself’ and her feature on Tinie Tempah’s ‘Not Letting Go’. Her debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, was released in 2015 and debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart.

Who knew a trip to Pizza Express could inform a young teenagers life so greatly? One evening in 2003, Jess Glynne’s parents returned home from a night in Soho with a signed CD by a new singer they had seen performing at the restaurant’s regular jazz night.

“It had such a profoundly immediate effect on me,” remembers Jess of her parents playing Amy Winehouse’s debut album, ‘Frank’. “I’d always loved the big pop vocals of Mariah, Beyoncé and Whitney, but hearing a woman’s voice that was basically a jazz vocal, so full of individuality? Then realising she was British and still a teenager? That was the moment I knew I wanted to be a singer too.”

Bryan Ferry headlines at Looe Music Festival

Looe Music Festival is three days of superb live music in a magical setting on the stunning Cornish coast. A ‘grownup’ music festival where camping isn’t a prerequisite, visitors can stay for the day or the weekend, stay in comfort and eat like a king.

For three days from September 23 to 25 Looe gets hit with big music, manic entertainment and a smattering of culture for good measure. The festival pops up from nowhere to transform the beach and the streets, giving locals and visitors from all over the world a chance to mingle and enjoy the show. PE T ER ’S PE A K PERFOR M ANCE Trekking in the Himalayan foothills and mountains is not everybody’s idea of a dream holiday - but for Peter Morgan it’s become something of a ritual.

The 72-year-old retired insurance manager from Yealmpton has visited Nepal nine times for trekking holidays - and this year was no exception.

He had booked a 12 day trip to Nepal in late March, but the sudden onset of an extremely painful condition in his feet threatened the whole venture.

“I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis (sometimes known as ‘policeman’s heel’) a few months before my planned trip and had tried different ways of easing the pain. In the end nothing was working and I was actually beginning to suffer severe back pain because my posture was being affected,” said Peter.

“I was taking pain killers every day, but the condition was not improving at all,” he added. “I knew that if something didn’t change I would need some serious pain killers to complete the trek.”

Then, just a few weeks before his trip to Nepal he was with his wife Rosemary when she visited Foot Solutions in Royal Parade, Plymouth to purchase some comfortable walking shoes.

“I was actually planning to book an appointment with a podiatrist later that day, but got chatting to Jacqui, one of the Foot Solutions team, and she explained that they helped many customers with plantar fasciitis.”

After a full assessment of his feet, Peter was supplied with customised arch supports - and his situation was transformed completely.

“On a scale of 1 to 10 the pain level was about 8 prior to having the insoles. Now it’s as low as 1 most days and I don’t need any pain relief at all.”

More importantly Peter was not only able to fly to Nepal, but completed the arduous trekking holiday without any problems. He and his companion and two guides completed the trek to the Annapurna Base Camp situated in spectacular scenery at an altitude of nearly 14,000 feet in the Himalayas.

The annual rally takes place between July 29 and August 1 started 28 years ago and attracts thousands of visitors to the city’s spectacular waterfront.

A host of family-friendly entertainments will be on offer shoreside throughout the five-day event, along with vintage vessels moored in the heart of the city.

One of the highlights will be the arrival of an exact replica of the first ship to ever sail around the world.

The impressive ship was built in 1992 and is the only replica of the famous original, which became the first vessel to successfully circumnavigate the globe in 1522 as part of Magellan’s Expedition.

The 27-metre long, three-masted replica is an exact copy of the 16th century original with four decks, 290 square metres of sail, and a main beam measuring 6.7 metres.

She will be visiting the UK for the first time this summer when she sails into Plymouth to berth in historic Sutton Harbour in the very heart of Britain’s Ocean City.

Charlotte Malcolm, commercial marketing manager for Sutton Harbour Holdings, said: “Sutton Harbour regularly hosts visits from ria - replica of the first historic tall ships which prove enormously e world. The arrival of the Nao Victoria follows a number of successful visits from tall ships to Sutton Harbour, including the three-masted barque Kaskelot and Westcountry trading ketch The Irene, which both visited in 2015.

Visitors will be able to board the Nao Victoria from 10am until 7pm every day whilst she is berthed in Sutton Harbour.

Tickets will cost £4 for adults, £2 for children under 11, and entry is free for children under five.

The Nao Victoria will also be available for corporate or private event hire to host events for up to 80 people.

July 10 to 12 LA ROCHELLE REVIVAL RACE Sutton Harbour Plymouth will welcome another international sailing event this summer when the historic waterfront quarter of Sutton Harbour hosts the Plymouth to La Rochelle Revival Race. Following the success of world-class sailing event The Transat bakerly, this popular international race from England to France is held every other year, last hosted in

There will also be terrier racing, shearing competitions, vintage vehicles, dog show and falconry among the many things to see and do.

Heavyweight wrestling at its best in Plymouth Plymouth Wrestling Association have been providing family entertainment for the people of Plymouth for seven years and are one of the best kept secrets in the city when it comes to great night outs to be had.

Whether you remember watching Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Hulk Hogan, The Rock or John Cena, Plymouth Wrestling Association has something for everyone.

Plymouth Wrestling Association have a host of stars on their roster from across the South West who all grew up watching wrestling and are now chasing their dreams of being the next wrestling superstar.

Holly Hewat and Giorgio Kays will play the title roles in the outdoor production of Romeo & Juliet in August

Cast announced for Barbican Theatre’s production of Romeo & Juliet Plymouth’s Barbican Theatre has announced the cast for its summer outdoor production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet at the Royal William Yard from August 5 to 21.

Probably the most famous of all the bard’s plays, Romeo & Juliet tells the story of two young star-crossed lovers whose ultimate sacrifice unites their feuding families.

One hundred and seventeen actors auditioned for the show and the final cast of eight includes a mixture of dynamism, long time experience and inspirational newcomers from the region.

The title roles will be filled Giorgio Kays and Holly Hewat, both in the final phase of their professional training.

Mark Laville, director of Romeo & Juliet said: “More than forty actors auditioned for professional roles in Romeo & Juliet and I was impressed with the quality of talent at our fingertips.

“Selecting Holly and Giorgio for the title roles was a great pleasure. Their acting, stage presence and chemistry were exceptional. I’m really looking forward to working with them to create an unforgettable theatre experience for residents and visitors to the city this summer.”

Movie time at Tinside Lido

An exciting two night film event at Plymouth’s Tinside Lido will take place on July 22 and 23 to celebrate the launch of the national touring exhibition Sea Swim: Head Above Water.

The iconic 1975 blockbuster Jaws will be screened on Friday July 22 and all tickets have already been snapped up. The following evening Life of Pi will be shown, with the film screening starting when day light level drops, expected between 9pm and 9.30pm.

Another survey recently published shows that employers and young people are very satisfied with apprenticeships. Here we talk to Mark Boulting, managing director of Plymouthbased apprenticeship training provider, Skills Group, about why the apprenticeship route appeals to both young people and employers.

It is heartening to read that overall satisfaction with apprenticeships continues to rise for both those that become apprentices and the businesses that recruit them. This is also very timely, as there will be lots of teenagers who have just sat important exams and are now making decisions about their future.

I’d like to take this opportunity to reiterate that young people do not have to stay on at school after their GCSEs. There are other options, such as apprenticeships, where they can get their foot on the career ladder.

Equally, for teenagers who have just taken their A Levels, an apprenticeship offers a debt free alternative to university, going straight into a job – at a time when many graduates are struggling to find work.

Many of our apprentices tell me that choosing an apprenticeship has been the best decision they have made, because it means they already have a job, they are getting real hands-on experience while they are training and, importantly, they are being paid.

There are lots of different motivations behind their decision to become an apprentice. For many it is because they want to start earning a wage, and have money in their pockets. For others it is because they prefer to learn in a more practical manner or they just didn’t like school. Then, there are those who started the more traditional A Level route but soon realised it didn’t suit them, and some who’ve actually used their apprenticeship as a way of tasting a specific profession before applying to go on to university.

The reasons are many and varied, but what always strikes me is the fact that these young people know that the experience they’ve gained, alongside their qualifications, will help them stand head and shoulders above the competition in the job market.

For business, the benefits of employing apprenticeships are also many and varied. Research conducted on behalf of the National Apprenticeship Service shows that businesses with apprentices are more productive; they have increased employee satisfaction and lower staff turnover; their recruitment costs are lower; plus they are more attractive to consumers.

When I talk to local employers who employ apprentices, a significant reason for recruiting apprentices is the fact that the training is tailored to meet the specific needs of their business – they can future-proof their workforce and grow a specialist team with the skills they require. In addition, many employers highlight the energy young people bring to their organisations – their enthusiasm and ideas can re-energise the whole team.

Now is a great time for young people to explore the apprenticeship opportunities available – we are currently advertising over 180 jobs across Devon and Cornwall in a range of professions. It’s also an ideal time for companies looking to take on apprentices, as GCSEs and A Levels have finished and teenagers consider their next steps – and there is some funding to help!

A shortage of good quality residential properties to rent in Plymouth has led to a marked increase in letting rental prices in 2016, according to the director of one of the city's leading independent letting agencies.

Richard Rabin of Lang Town & Country Lettings said: "The demand for residential rental properties is extremely strong at the moment, but there are not enough properties coming onto the market to meet that demand.

"We have seen rental prices in some locations rise as much as 10 to 15 per cent since the beginning of the year. For example a three bed property in Peverell which say a year ago would have previously attracted a monthly rental of around £800pcm is now achieving closer to £900pcm.

"Similarly, a four bedroom home in the north of the city - particularly near Derriford - is now achieving a rental of £1000pcm a month, compared with £900pcm a few months ago."

He added that rentals for flats and apartments had also increased this year with a one bed now averaging £525pcm compared with between £450pcm and £495 pcm 12 months ago.

"It is purely down to supply and demand," said Richard, "and there are a number of factors that are causing the shortage.

"The residential sales market is very buoyant helped by an easing in mortgage lending and Government measures to help first time buyers. On the other side of the coin buy-to-let investors are now facing increased curbs especially after the recent changes to stamp duty that came

into effect in April this year."

He said that these factors had combined to squeeze the number of properties being made available for rent and in turn had also led to a dramatic increase in the number of prospective tenants on their books.

"Under normal circumstances we usually have around 200 people on our books who are looking for rental property. At the moment that figure has more than doubled to well over 400. We have not seen this level of demand for many, many years," added Richard.

Richard said that Lang Town & Country Lettings were ideally placed to work with landlords with their unrivalled coverage of the city.

"We have offices in the city centre, on the Barbican and in Plymstock with dedicated lettings staff in each one," he added, "and all of them have expert knowledge of the local lettings market and key features of the area from a tenant's point of view.

"We are very happy to give free advice to prospective landlords or home owners on the letting potential of their property and have huge experience of the local market, having been established for nearly 20 years in Plymouth."

The company has created a team of experienced property managers who provide a single point of contact for landlords for all issues relating to their property.

The four property managers are Hugo Oliveira and Emma Trevarrow (North Hill office), Bryony Green (Waterside) and Rebecca Bartlett (Plymstock). In addition Cheryl Reuben, who is also based at North Hill, holds the post of lettings area manager.

A fifth property manager is joining the company in the next few weeks, allowing for a property

manager to be located at Lang Town & Country's Mannamead office.

Unlike some letting agencies, Lang Town & Country Lettings is licensed with the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) and all its property managers are either already fully qualified by ARLA or currently completing their qualifications.

Cheryl said: "It is important for landlords to recognise that there are still a lot of unregulated letting agents in the market. Every year tenants and landlords lose thousands of pounds and suffer distress through dealing with agents who are inexperienced and do not deal with client money in a professional manner."

ARLA licensed letting agents hold client money in a designated client account and accounts are independently inspected annually. Customers will receive a professional service from an ARLA licensed agent but if things go wrong neither tenants nor landlords will be left out of pocket.

Richard said that the company will shortly be unveiling a range of business packages for landlords which will be extremely competitive across all its services - from tenant finding through to full management.

"We believe we can provide a quality service at value for money prices to meet the needs of any landlord. When it comes to marketing properties for rent we go the extra mile by providing high quality photographs and floor plans as standard. And we will soon be using a professional photography to ensure that the images are even better," he added.

Imran, an IT specialist and qualified electrician, has worked across Europe for major energy companies. Just over a year ago he decided to combine his skills to set up his own business, offering a bespoke automation service for homeowners.

The ability to control every element of the electrics at your home isn’t just a matter of convenience; for some older people or those with disabilities it means they’re able to remain living at home and the more precise use of heating and lighting – even when not in the house – has been shown to reduce up to 40% of costs.

Imran has turned his own family home in Plympton into a perfect advert for automation, which his wife Julie and their two young children just love. In fact, a tour of their house provides a glimpse of how automation can change the way people live for the better, with a doorbell through which you can talk to the caller if you’re not in; external access that can be controlled when you’re away from home; mobile devices where light switches used to be, and low level master switches that control every element of access, lighting, heating, multi-room home entertainment and security – including CCTV. Imran and Julie, who’s the business secretary, have programmed their mobile phones to operate the electrics and the system can also be web-based. Traditional timers for heating and lighting are a thing of the past here – and so are

keys, as locks are coded, operated, and changed remotely. All the programme equipment comes from top companies, such as Siemens.

“When I talk to people about what we can all easily have in our homes, they can’t believe it,” said Imran. “It started as a way to improve accessibility in the home but can now be applied to everything.

“Home automation is going to be the next massive thing.

It’s already getting pretty big in London and it will become a reality for most people across the UK.” So, what does this reality look like? “We’ve just come back from a holiday and when we landed we put the heating on and set the temperature from our phone. We can switch the lights on and off in all the rooms which is excellent for security. We can basically operate everything in a way that suits us, even turn the alarm on and off when we’re out or reset door and alarm codes.

“The doorbell is fantastic. Our neighbour wanted to return some tools but when he rang the doorbell we weren’t in. We could speak to him and then remotely open the garage door for him.

“I think that if you have a busy lifestyle, the convenience of just getting things done is such an advantage. It’s all about making our lives a bit easier.

“We can lock electrical sockets for child safety and we can lock the lights off in our kids’ rooms at night to encourage them to get to sleep! I can keep an eye on my mum’s home in London to make sure she’s safe and secure, which give her and us peace of mind.”

Listening to Imran talk about his work, it’s obvious he loves what he does: “I’ve always been into gadgets so a career in IT was perfect for me. But my dad was an electrician and he was a big influence on me so I became qualified in that, too. Now I’m combining both of these fields to do home automation.

“It’s nice to be able to do things that surprise people and that make them really happy. A guy rang me recently and said he needed to be able to control the heating, lighting and security at his holiday home in Newton Ferrers but he couldn’t find anyone in the South West until he found me online. The solutions we came up with at his home were completely bespoke, which is one of the great things about home automation – you can have as little or as much as you want. And the age of the house doesn’t matter either.

“To be honest what is achievable is limitless,” he added.

“It’s incredibly affordable – it costs hundreds rather than thousands of pounds – and it will have a positive impact on the way people live.” Contact Imran for a chat about automation for your home.

Over the years of meeting different business owners, it's been my pleasant experience to find that many individuals advancing up the corporate ladder actually grow into decent, down to earth people who appreciate the ordinary things of life the most – family, relationships, respect towards people and value for money, writes Karen Pilkington.

One such local company expresses these characteristics very well, despite, or perhaps because of their extensive professional backgrounds.

Steve was trained as a professional engineer and builder, working for local firm Stribley and Backaller. He also brings with him a background in telecommunications and street works and is no stranger to large commercial contracts.

And Kevin has 35 years of experience in ground works, with the practical ability to make sure that Rob and Steve's ideas work

in practice. Cocktails made by robots, the Ultimate Abyss water slide and a bar in a lift - all part of life on the amazing Harmony of the Seas I am sure many of you will have seen some of the publicity surrounding the much heralded arrival of the Harmony of the Seas as it berthed in Southampton recently and officially became the world’s largest cruise ship.

I was one of the lucky passengers who had booked (and paid) to travel on the maiden voyage of this impressive new addition to the Royal Caribbean fleet a few days after its arrival.

My wife and I like to sample a different mini-cruise each year with friends who are not keen on flying. We find them incredible value for money with a great selection of itineraries for short-breaks.

We booked this particular mini-cruise on the Harmony late last year and it involved three days at sea with a call in Rotterdam, which was ideal for those wishing to take an excursion in to Amsterdam.

Due to the sheer size and different design of this ship, we decided on a different cabin type for this particular cruise and opted for a balcony cabin on the inner part of the ship overlooking the boulevard rather than the sea. This cabin type was better value than the balcony with a sea view and still gave us that much needed outside space.

Before I continue with a review of our on-board experience, allow me to highlight some amazing facts and figures about this amazing vessel.

• The Harmony is an incredible 1,118 feet long – if upright, it would stand taller than The Shard in London or the Eiffel Tower in Paris • It has 17 decks and can accommodate a maximum of 6,780 guests looked after by 2,100 crew • The main theatre on board can seat up to 1,300 people and is almost identical in size to Plymouth’s very own Theatre Royal • Passengers can enjoy dining in a selection of 16 restaurants and relaxing beside an impressive 23 swimming pools • The ship has an astounding 10,587 plants on board including 52 trees in its Central Park neighbourhood • During an average seven-night cruise, 2,500lbs of salmon and 2,100lbs of lobster tails can expect to be consumed We were somewhat apprehensive about the check-in procedure at Southampton for this cruise as we suspected the process of boarding 6,000 passengers could be a bit of a logistical nightmare.

To our surprise however, everything was very straight forward.

We were greeted in the entrance foyer of the cruise terminal by a team of Royal Caribbean staff armed with ipads, which were used to confirm our booking and arrival. We then handed over our tickets, bags and verified our ID before being waved through the security channel in a matter of minutes.

We were able to board the ship immediately and advised that our ship pass cards would be available in our cabins. Those of you who have cruised before will be well aware that this whole embarkation process can be quite time consuming so we were very impressed by the organisation and efficiency on this occasion.

I have been lucky enough to sail with a number of different cruise lines and I would describe the standard of the cabins on The Harmony as very good indeed in comparison to other ships. Our cabin was spacious and exceptionally well equipped with a fabulous interactive TV to supply you with details of all the on board news, entertainment and activities.

For passengers who take technology a stage further than myself, there is also a ship app called “Royal iQ”, which can be downloaded to portable devices giving you everything you need to know about your cruise whilst on the move.

After our first lunch on board, we decided to explore the ship as there is so much to see and do - our first visit was to the Bionic Bar – a cocktail bar where all the drinks are prepared exclusively by robots!

Once seated, you are handed a personal ipad, which you use to swipe your ship pass card and log in to your account. You can then order from a selection of cocktails or choose to compose one of your own.

You are provided with a time slot on screen indicating when your cocktail will be ready and you can even watch it being prepared.

It is fascinating concept and definitely worth a visit but be careful …. each cocktail is $12 and they don’t skimp on the alcoholic ingredients!

For dinner on our first evening, we chose to dine at the Jamie Oliver Restaurant, one of the many specialist restaurants on board that are available for an extra charge.

The meal was very nice but I would question whether it was worth paying a supplement to eat here as the meals in the main restaurants were equally as good and included in the basic cost of the cruise.

main Grand Restaurant, which was excellent in terms of food quality, choice and service.

The on board entertainment was truly spectacular and after our first evening dinner, we were treated to a cabaret show featuring Bobby Davro.

The 1,300 seat theatre was often at full capacity so pre-booking the shows is highly recommended. The following day, we had also pre-booked to see a matinee performance of Grease.

The standard of cruise ship entertainment that I have witnessed on various cruise lines over the years has differed greatly but I would honestly say that this particular performance of Grease outclassed a production that I saw in London’s West End a few years ago.

The Harmony also features an outdoor Aqua Theatre, which again proved to be extremely entertaining.

I generally find many of the on-board ship facilities to be geared towards, and appreciated by, a younger age group and The Harmony does not disappoint in this respect.

Some of the amenities available include an ice skating rink, rock climbing, crazy golf, a zip wire, a basketball-football court, the Flowrider surfing experience and various water slides including the Ultimate Abyss. This particular dual slide is situated at the back of the ship and plunges 10 decks in height, making it the tallest water slide at sea.

Our only stop on this mini-cruise itinerary was Rotterdam – a fascinating port where our immense ship docked almost in the town centre greeted by thousands of spectators scrambling for photos of its first arrival. At this point, we opted to take an excursion in to Amsterdam, which we thoroughly enjoyed although many passengers remained on board to enjoy what the ship had to offer.

With so many different bars, restaurants and activities on board The Harmony, it is difficult to say what we enjoyed most of all about this cruise but we did thoroughly enjoy spending time in the Rising Tide bar and this very much became our favourite place for a drink and a chat.

This bar is unique in the sense that it moves up and down between the main Royal Promenade deck and the Central Park area three floors above, using a hydraulic lift.

The bar was only small but was run by some fantastic individuals who gave exceptional service. I feel that one particular gentleman called David, who worked with the entertainment team, is worthy of a special mention.

He told us his fascinating life story about growing up in a circus in America and how he and all his family were circus clowns.

The circus was so large that they permanently lived on a train as it toured the States. You may have heard of it – it was called

‘Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’.

This particular encounter just left us amazed about who you can meet on a cruise!

Our four-night mini-cruising experience on board this awesome new ship was over before we knew it and on the morning of arrival in Southampton, we prepared for the usual chaos of disembarkation.

However, once again, to our surprise, the whole procedure was exceptionally well planned and executed allowing us to get off the ship within 10 minutes.

There are, of course, both benefits and disadvantages to cruising on such a large vessel. I would say the main draw is the sheer amount of entertainment and amenities that a ship like The Harmony has to offer – you are literally spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do and places to eat and drink in an environment very much resembling a four or five star hotel.

The compromise is that you have to share these facilities with 6,000 other passengers!

I would certainly recommend this ship for families and larger groups but, for me, 'small is beautiful' and I think my preference will always be to cruise on a smaller ship where I feel personal service and quality will usually outweigh quantity.

I would however like to conclude by saying that we had a truly wonderful time and we will always remember the experience of being involved in the maiden voyage of the largest cruise ship in the world!

Many people ask their dentists whether their metal amalgam fillings contain mercury which is likely to be a health risk.

The short answer from the EU and British Dental Association is yes, they still regard it as safe, but their recent scientific conclusion recommends that amalgam be gradually phased out!

Well if this sounds to you a little like saying yes it is safe, but no it isn’t safe, at the same time, then I agree with you!

A quick search on Google will reveal massive differences of opinion, with some highly regarded medical scientists firmly stating it is safe whilst others are adamant that it can cause significant health problems.

After thirty years of being a dentist I still scratch my head and wonder how good science can deliver such opposing views.

We all have to make judgments on the mass of information now available to us, and I and many of my dentist colleagues have come to respect that our patients’ own views of the science and their own health is arguably the most important opinion of all.

If someone is concerned then we must at least consider alternative materials. In my own practice I have not used amalgam at all in the last ten years, largely because I think the modern natural looking tooth coloured materials work so well, even if they are more costly.

Here is my own view, which I hope is a balanced one, in a nutshell: Amalgam fillings : For : They can be extremely durable (some of mine have been in place for 40 years!).

They are relatively easy and cost effective for dentists to put in so are usually more affordable than alternatives.

Most countries regard them as ‘safe’ and not a health threat to most people.

Against: They don’t look very nice and there are possible concerns about the mercury content.

The alternatives to amalgam are typically white or tooth coloured fillings made from ‘composite’ for small to medium size fillings, or ‘porcelain’ type inlays or crowns for larger fillings: For: they look a lot nicer and more natural.

No mercury.

Against: they require more time, skill and care to do to a high standard and are consequently usually significantly more costly.

Modern technologies such as ‘Cerec’ enables dentists to make very effective and accurate fillings and crowns often in only a single visit.

Your relationship with your dentist is key and you should discuss the options available and seek their opinion of any

Dentistry can be quite technically demanding and it may not be as simple as just ‘taking out the metal one one and putting in a white one’ so sometimes dentists prefer not to replace metal fillings that are in good condition, but it is perhaps a good option to consider tooth coloured fillings at least if any new or replacement filling is needed anyway.

For some people we have found that a gradual program of safely removing old metal fillings and replacing them with high quality tooth coloured ones has led to them reporting significant changes in how they feel about their teeth and their health.

Done gradually, perhaps over months or years, replacing old fillings this way can be affordable and effective.

David opened Plymouth Tree Services at Crownhill’s Plymouth Garden Centre late last year and has been overwhelmed by the response of local home-owners and contractors alike.

As well as selling established, respected brands, Plymouth Tree Services also offers a garden machinery repair service. David runs the shop alongside his tree surgery and garden services business – and the team of four is set to grow further this summer.

“The shop here was an opportunity that came along and it has allowed us to expand the business,” explained David.

“And it has been a great move for us. It’s the perfect spot with the main road location, the parking, and the throughput at the garden centre. We opened in October to prepare for this spring and summer and as soon as we had a nice sunny spell we became really busy.

“The feedback we’ve had from contractors and private customers is that they want to support local businesses who can offer quality brands and a good service,” he added.

Brands include Plympton-based Atco lawnmowers.

Established in 1921 and featuring engines by Briggs & Stratton, Honda and Kawasaki, these have proved extremely popular already this summer. All equipment is assembled and pre-tested and David offers a home delivery service, too. No more doing battle with dodgy instructions and parts that you have to put together yourself!

Roses will grow o At this time of year, the garden is bursting with colour and everything is flowering its socks off, but there is one plant that dominates them all, and that’s the rose. It is the nation’s favourite flower and for good reason.

The flowers are spectacular, come in a huge range of colours, sizes and shapes, and many have amazing fragrances. They flower from midsummer all the way through to the frosts. Roses do however have a reputation for being difficult to grow, however if you follow these basic rules and tips, you’ll have beautiful roses year after year.

Choosing the right spot Roses will grow in any soil, however they will perform better in a sandy soil. If you have clay soil, it is best to dig it over and then break it up with a good quality compost or well-rotted farmyard manure. Mix it thoroughly.

Roses like a sunny position, so choose a site that gets at least 50% of the day in the sun. If you are replacing old roses with new roses remove as much of the old soil as possible and replace with soil that hasn’t grown roses before (the old soil will grow anything else apart from roses). Dig in Rootgrow when plating, it is a natural product called mycorrhizal fungi that promotes stronger, healthier and faster root growth. This in turn will allow better feeding, more resistance to pest and diseases and better drought tolerance.

How to Plant Roses that are container grown can be planted at any time of year as long as the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged. Dig a hole that is slightly bigger than the pot it came in and place a handful of bone meal at the bottom of the hole, mixing in with the soil. Water the rose in its pot thoroughly before planting.

Remove from its pot and place the rose in the ground and backfill with soil that has been enriched with good quality compost, manure or a rose and shrub compost.

Make sure the graft of the rose (the knot that connects the bush part to the roots) is at, or slightly above soil level. Water well.

How to Prune Pruning is probably the part of rose growing that most people fell daunted by. It’s fairly easy to do, the rule of thumb is there should be a spring prune and an autumn prune. Bush roses (patio, floribunda, shrub and hybrid teas) spring prune Pruning should be prune out 1/3 of the original size in a frost-free period from mid-February to mid-March. Prune out any weak, weedy, damaged, dead or diseased growth. In the autumn, roses can be trimmed back after they finish flowering in November to stop wind-rock and root damage.

As for the pruning itself, use a pair of clean, sharp secateurs and always cut the stem above an outward face bud. Make the cut at a 45 degree and sloping away from the centre of the plant. This will ensure that any rain water will run off the stem onto the ground instead of the crown of the plant. Try to keep all of the growth on the edge of the bush keeping the centre clear. Aim for a goblet shape. This will allow plenty of light and air to flow through the centre of the plant, which will reduce

Training & pruning climbing/ rambling roses Climbing and rambling roses are great for growing a wall or fence. They make a beautiful backdrop and help to cover unsightly boundaries. They are perform at their best when trained to grow horizontally (fanned out). To achieve this, stretch wires out along the wall/fence attach to vine eyes or nails, and bend the rose branches along the wire, attaching it to the wire with string or twine. The first wire should be around 60cm (2ft) above soil level and further wires at 45cm (18ins) intervals.

When the rose starts to grow, the stems trained horizontally will throw up vertical stems. Use the strongest verticals stems arising from the base and /or the middle of the plant to train along higher wires to create another tier if required. Prune the remaining vertical stems to 1cm or above the nearest bud from the horizontal stem during September and October. By following this, you will avoid an unsightly tall plant with a few flowers at the top and nothing below. The rose should produce flowers from the base to the tip in abundance.

As a general rule, use climbers on walls, fences, pillars and pergolas. Ramblers will grow into hedges, trees over large arches and may also be used on pillars and pergolas. Climbers tend to repeat flower, whereas ramblers tend to flower once.

Feeding & mulching To get the best from your roses they need to be fed at regular intervals. A clay soil will need the addition of fertiliser twice a year, in March (after pruning) and after the first flush of flowers is over (usually June/July). The best fertilisers to use are Toprose, Fish, Blood and Bone, Growmore or Chicken Manure Pellets A sandy or chalky soil will need feeding monthly from March to end-July – a small handful of fertiliser will suffice.A water soluble fertiliser can also be applied fortnightly such as Miraclegro or Phostrogen. This will increase the vigour of the plants and in turn result in an abundance of flowers.

Mulching is a good practice; Dead heading garden compost, or well-rotted manure will keep the moisture in the ground, help feed the rose and keep weeds down. This can be done in the autumn or spring. Be generous with a mulch, it is most effective when laid to a depth of 5cm (2ins) Watering Roses will tolerate a dry soil but will perform best in a moist soil.If the ground is dry, water well occasionally. Little and often watering is best avoided. This will encourage small feeder roots to grow at the surface of the soil and be in danger of scorching or drying out more frequently. Giving your roses a deluge watering (lots of water) once a week if more beneficial.

Pests & diseases Every well-seasoned gardener has their own opinion and theories of keeping pest and diseases off their roses, and what works for one person may not work well for another, but if you follow a few basic rules, you can at least keep them at bay.

Firstly, choose a variety that has good pest and disease resistance.

There are numerous varieties now that boast good health and robustness, so feel free to ask instore and we will happily point you in the right direction.

Secondly keep up good husbandry, keep your roses clean, clear any weeds, fallen leaves, or debris from the base of the rose and deadhead regularly.

Rose black spot Thirdly, try companion planting, garlic, marigolds and lavender are all reported to keep away aphids, blackfly and whitefly. They dislike the smell they emit and lastly spray your roses once a month with Roseclear from April until August. These four tips should keep your roses in tip top condition.

Growing Roses in Pots Roses grow well in containers, providing the following guidelines are followed: Always use John Innes No. 3 – roses dislike multipurpose compost. Use a slow release fertiliser, and liquid feed from March

until September. Choose a pot that is at least three times the size that the rose is growing in. Ideally choose a patio rose, which are specifically breed to grow in pots, or varieties that do not exceed 90cm (3ft) in height. Place the pot in a sunny spot and water well.

Suckers These shouldn’t be a problem but if you see any shoot coming from the base of the plant which has light green leaves and green stems with a few thorns it could be a sucker. Do not cut it off, pull it off as deep as you can (with good gloves). If coming from underground, dig the soil away and pull it off.

If you follow these guidelines, you’ll have roses that will flower for up to five months of the year with the minimum of attention.
