Action-packed August ahead Plymouth hosts some amazing events during the course of the year, but August is always a very special month for Britain’s Ocean City.

Thousands of bikers will be turning out on August 9 to support the Plymouth Megaride, which celebrates its 21st anniversary in 2015. It is one of the biggest ride-outs in the country and has raised tens of thousands of pounds for worthwhile causes over the years.

It is always a fantastic spectacle as the riders head down the A38 from Lee Mill to end up at The Hoe for a mass celebration.

The Hoe will also play host in August to the ever-popular British Fireworks Championships when visitors from all over the UK and beyond make a bee-line for Plymouth. This year there’s the added bonus of an aerobatic display by the world-famous Red Arrows on the second night of the championships on Wednesday August 19.

The previous weekend from Friday August 14 to Sunday August 16, the city centre will be buzzing when Plymouth hosts the 12th annual Flavour Fest, one of the largest free food and drink festivals in the South West. There will be more than 120 food and drink traders lining the streets, tempting visitors with a range of local produce including fresh fish, cheese, home baked cakes, artisan bread and pastries and cider.

There’s also a host of entertainment and special events for people of all ages - along with the popular Flavour Fest Cookery Stage where TV chef Phil Vickery will be headlining.

As if that is not enough Central Park will be the venue for Culture Fest on August 23 when there will be music, food, fun and lots of family activities - and it’s all for free again!

BUSINESS MATTERS Ollie and Mel Mackie with Layla and Ava

Olly Lolly’s fruity offerings are such a natural success!

What do you do when you can’t find an all-natural fruit ice lolly for love nor money? Make your own!

That’s what Ollie and Mel Mackie from Stoke did when they couldn’t get a healthy thirst quencher while out cycling with their three children on a hot early summer’s day just a couple of months ago.

Now they’ve taken it a step further by launching a business, Olly Lolly – and already their hand-made 100% natural lollies are in big demand: “It’s hard to keep up,” said Ollie. “So we’ve bought a specialist rapid freezer from Brazil which means the lollies will be set in 20 minutes rather than five hours, and we’re just moving into a new base at the Guildhall in Devonport.

“It’s been unbelievable and it’s all happened almost by accident,” he added. “It was a hot day and we were out cycling. We were at an ice cream van and what we wanted more than anything was a natural, fruity ice lolly. But there was nothing other than lollies with additives and huge sugar content.

“When we spoke to the ice cream man about it he said ‘we can’t get natural lollies’. So we thought ‘right then, let’s do it’. And it’s just growing and growing. Our motto is ‘Free the Fruit’ because that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

The business has a real family flavour to it with the children Layla, 8, Ruben, 7, and Ava, 2, trying out all the new combinations and feeding back: “They’re brilliant,” said Ollie. “Mel and I tend to make the lollies in the evening after the children have gone to bed or first thing in the morning and they come down and say ‘what flavours have we got today?’

“We listen to their views because if they like the flavours, the chances are that other children will too. But the lollies are a great treat for adults as well. From our own point of view, we’re having great fun making them – doing the recipes, trying the flavours – we spend more time together now than we’ve ever done.”

The lollies are made using local fruit where possible, including suppliers from the Tamar Valley and elsewhere in Devon and Cornwall. Mel says they’ve shown that people want a healthier option when it comes to ice lollies: “I think people nowadays want to eat food that they know a lot of thought and heart has gone into.

“Our lollies only have fruit, water and raw, unrefined sugar – and the sugar content is 60-70% lower. The range we have at the moment is largely seasonal, with some additional flavours such as lime, coconut and mango.”

Among the flavours currently proving popular are pear and ginger, watermelon and rose, raspberry and lime, and Bramley apple and rhubarb, with the rhubarb grown by the family. In the autumn, expect Bramley apple and blackberry lollies. The one flavour that’s not dairy-free is cold brewed coffee.

The only problem for Mel and Ollie is trying to keep up with demand, which is why they’ve decided to expand so quickly.

Having initially taken their portable lolly trolley to Devonport Park Market, they’ve now been given space by the Royal William Yard Market – their first one is on August 2 – and the Totnes Good Food Market.

Local schools and organisations such as children’s creative arts group Stiltskin are asking them to supply events, while Devonport Live community cafés also stock the lollies. The aim now is to make enough to supply retail outlets. “It became obvious very quickly that we couldn’t meet the demand by working here at home with our freezer,” said Ollie.

“We’ve had a lot of help and support from people, especially Devonport Live and RIO (Real Ideas Organisation), and we’ve managed get a place just behind the Column Bakehouse at Devonport Guildhall.”

The environment is important to the couple, who use compostable wraps made from vegetable matter for the lollies: “Our lollies leave no trace,” said Ollie, who reckons that Plymouth is the perfect place for the business: “This is our ocean city, it’s ideal for produce that’s nice and fresh and natural. Plymouth is getting an excellent reputation for the quality of food and it’s great to be part of that.”

Olly and Mel are already working on their next offering – wedding lollies with flavours chosen by the bride and groom: “Prosecco on a stick or Pimm’s on a stick would be brilliant!” said Ollie.

Lesley is walking tall thanks to Foot Solutions Walking had become increasingly difficult for Lesley Harman because of pain in her knees.

Lesley, who works for a firm of independent financial advisers in Plymouth, could just about manage to walk to and from the bus stop and her workplace - but the pain was getting worse as the years wore on.

Lesley, from Liskeard, said: “I just put it down to getting older and my doctor suggested I take fish oil to help my joints.

I think it all started when I hurt my knee a few years earlier while walking down the cliffs at Whitsand Bay. “Over the years every step became more and more painful,” added Lesley.

Sweet success...Tracey Anderson with her son James

Walking through the front door at Chris and Tracey Anderson’s Cattedown home first thing in the morning is a bit like entering Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The kitchen is a hive of activity, with chocolate being tempered

by Chris here and fruit ganache being piped by Tracey there. Over on the other side of the kitchen, Tracey’s son James is taking a tray of chocolate brownies out of the oven. Welcome to the world of artisan chocolatiers.

It’s 8am and everything has to be cooled and set in time for the drive in to Plymouth City Market, where Sweet Chocolate Stories took over number 125 in the middle of June. Tracey and James’ first job on arrival each morning is to create an eye-catching display for their just-made chocolates and cakes. Today, the brownies and zingy passion fruit ganaches take pride of place alongside the shop’s biggest seller, walnut brittle in dark chocolate, and their hand-made chocolate bars.

Tracey and James are the front of house faces, while Chris – who has an NVQ3 in Patisserie and Confectionery – prefers to remain behind the scenes in the kitchen. It’s a job he clearly loves doing: “My background is as an engineer with British Aerospace but I’ve always been interested in food,” he said.

“It’s nice to be able to do everything from scratch and to see the end product. I’ve also got a sweet tooth as well, which is handy!”

Chris did his NVQ3 at Camborne College while he and Tracey were living in St Agnes a couple of years ago. It was while they were there that they had the idea of making high quality chocolates. Tracey set up the St Agnes Community

BUSINESS MATTERS Market, which became the first outlet for their chocolate and cakes before they decided to move back to Plymouth.

“We saw this house on the market and we bought it because of the kitchen,” said Tracey. “It’s perfect. We wanted to get a stall in the market but for the first couple of months we just took one of the daily benches, to see what sort of a response we’d get. It was good.

Then we noticed one of the stalls become available so we applied for it and got it.”

Tracey added: “We Chris Anderson busy creating chocolate only stock what we delights know we can sell quickly because it’s all freshly-made. And that’s nice because it means we can just make a small batch every morning.”

The chocolate bars proudly display ‘Made in Devon’ on the front and Chris says they’ve noticed an increased appetite for locally-made produce: “People want to know the origin and the content of their food. Our Belgian chocolate has high cocoa content from sustainable sources and with no preservatives, which we find that people like.”

Tracey, who previously worked in project development, describes herself as ‘the artist’, Chris as ‘the scientist’ and James as ‘the driving energy’ in the business. As a team, they test new flavour combinations and bounce ideas off each other all the time. James said: “It’s all about the flavours and the freshness. We’re developing new flavours at the moment, with a nice summery feel to them like pear truffle, pineapple, and gooseberry & elderflower. We’re also very excited about our Plymouth sloe gin truffles.”

The summer flavours will eventually give way to winter warmers. Hot chocolate and chocolate shots are being introduced from September and the shop will also have chocolate-themed Christmas hampers and gifts crafted in their kitchen.

James - who admits he often has chocolate for breakfast – “it’s when we make them so I always end up having one, but I make up for it later by having a salad” – is looking forward to driving the business forward in the years ahead. There are plans to involve his brother Jason, by having a presence in Bristol, where he lives.

Tracey has other ideas, too: “People who see us in the market have started to ask us to do occasion cakes, wedding favours and sweet buffet tables for weddings, so we’re looking to develop that side of the business. I’d also love to do chocolate-making workshops and maybe work with local schools.”

So what’s the story behind the name, Sweet Chocolate Stories? “That’s because everyone has a story and everyone likes sharing their stories,” explained Tracey. “People come to see us for a chat in the market and ask us what our story is. And I’m also going to write a children’s Christmas story all about chocolate – but I don’t want to give the plot away just yet!”

CREATIVITY MATTERS

Connor’s creative journey from Coronation Street to Plymouth

Connor McIntyre: you might not know his name but you’ll probably recognise his face, writes Roy Perring.

For a couple of decades now Connor has been a regular feature on our television screens. With his Liverpudlian accent and imposing stature he is an ideal candidate for the parts of villains.

He’s played quite a few. About a year ago he was Pat Phelan on soap favourite Coronation Street. Only last month he turned up on the Drama Channel in Messiah: The Rapture where we were convinced he was truly bad until the last few minutes.

He’s played his share of law keepers as well. He was DC Frank Craven in the popular Murder City and DCI Gulley in Waking the Dead. Add award winning comedy ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’, hospital series Always and Everyone, and Silent Witness and you have just a few of the productions Connor has appeared in.

Connor has spent a lot time in Plymouth: he came here to stay with his brother Noel who was in the Royal Navy. He was working as a part time car salesman in Germany, but he’d regularly travel back to Plymouth.

It was on one of those occasions that he passed the Barbican Theatre in Castle Street.

The door was open so he just wandered in. They were rehearsing the Berkoff play ‘East’ and they generously let him stay.

It was shortly after that when I first met him when we were giving performed readings of new plays and we got to work on a two parter. I hadn’t met Connor before as he wasn’t a part of the usual acting scene, but I was impressed with his reading. In the Dolphin pub afterwards I asked if he had done much acting before and he assured me that he hadn’t. However Connor was gripped by the idea of acting and was soon in various plays at the Barbican and the Drum theatres including the one man show ‘Harry’s Christmas’.

Connor is the sort of person who when he gets an idea throws himself at it. He was soon training to be an actor and it wasn’t before long that the television roles started.

It was later while he was researching a role with help from local legend Robert Lenkiewicz that Connor took some lessons in painting. Again he was gripped and in usual style threw himself at the subject. He has effectively taken seven years away from performance to study art at degree and masters level at Plymouth University whilst fitting in some performance work.

William Yard he was as keen to talk about the Alamo studio that he shares with Karen Roulstone and the mentoring that they do there, as much as his fascinating new work.

While Connor started out in the representational style with portraiture much of his current body of work ‘reflects the new epoch, one post human where code has a great influence.’

You can see it in the grid formation reminiscent of DNA. Connor was first recognised by Isabell Peirson at the ArtMill Gallery in Hyde Park who gave him a solo show. This was followed by his ‘New Coordinates’ exhibition at the Alamo.

The Alamo is a huge space in an industrial unit just off Millbay Road. It gives Connor and Karen more than enough space to create. Connor was more than grateful, after initiating the Alamo Project, to receive support from the City Council’s Social Enterprise Fund to do a feasibility study.

The mentoring offered at the Alamo studio is Connor’s way of saying thank you and giving back to the city in which he turned around his life. He says they are trying to nurture a bit of the welcome he found all those years ago at the Barbican Theatre.

At the Alamo they are giving space and time to emerging artists, most recently was Plymouth University graduate, Phil Magee who followed a six weeks residency with an exhibition ‘Set Back To Zero,’ the studio is also an occasional gallery.

Next up is a ‘very talented’ Stonehouse resident and graduate of Plymouth University who will be introduced to a wider audience in a few months time. Connor has high hopes for him.

As for Connor’s plans? First it’s back to the ArtMill Gallery in September where Isabell has brought together four disparate artists for an exhibition. It’s difficult to fault Connor’s enthusiasm and commitment to his work and projects.

I asked what his plans were now that his current education reaches a close. Would he go back to acting? Connor acknowledged that there might be offers but first he wants to get the Alamo studio and project firmly footed as a respected independent space.

“It’s an exciting time to be in the arts in Plymouth”, said Connor, “and to say yes more than no.”

It’s also an exciting time for Stonehouse in particular Millbay which is undergoing a transformation. The Alamo intends to play its part.

MAYFLOWER 400 MATTERS

Choirs join together to celebrate Mayflower 400 links A group of more than 30 children from schools in the American city of Plymouth Massachusetts visited Plymouth in July.

The visit has not just been about singing, during their visit, the US children visited the Mayflower steps and Barbican.

They have enjoyed a reception at Elliott Terrace with the Lord Mayor, where they heard about the legacy of Lord and Lady Astor. They went to a village fete in the grounds of Eggbuckland Community College, complete with cricket, cream tea and a brass band and completed their visit with a day trip to Dartmoor.

A total of 200 children from nine Plymouth schools took part in the performance at the Guildhall. City schools were invited to join the project to link with the Massachusetts chorus in an international dialogue of song.

The children represented part of the international choir that has been rehearsing, via the internet, across the waves between Plymouth UK and Plymouth USA. Collectively over 100 American and British children sang together, at their very first live concert to celebrate Mayflower 400 in Plymouth Guildhall.

The US visitors rehearsed, with their UK partner schools, at Notre Dame School before their final performance at the Guildhall, in celebration of our international ties.

Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health said: “This visit has been eagerly anticipated by the young people from both Plymouth locations. It brings together months of hard work and dedication, rehearsals over the internet and an immediate opportunity to meet the friends already made and to develop those friendships through music and song. We are delighted to welcome the International Chorus to Plymouth UK as part of our Mayflower 400 celebrations.”

Amongst the US group is the Brewster family who are direct descendants of William Brewster who sailed on the Mayflower back in 1620. 12 year old Noah will be singing with the group and his mum, Belinda and dad, Wrestling went along to support him.

Eleventh generation descendant Wrestling Brewster said: “What an amazing opportunity for our son to come to Plymouth, England and sing in the place where our ancestors embarked on their epic journey. We are so proud of him.

“What a great opportunity for our two nations to reach across the vast ocean and create this wonderful collaboration. As we ramp up for the 400th celebration of the landing of the English pilgrims in Plymouth harbour it is encouraging to have this example of international fellowship as a model for the world.”

2020 will mark the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, arguably the most influential single voyage in the history of the world.

Gym Bubbas’ autumn term of classes, which runs from 1 September until Christmas. Kate explained: “Our courses run alongside school terms but we thought it would be nice to offer something different for the children to do while they’re on their school holidays.”

Kate, a sport science and coaching graduate of Marjon, used to be a competitive diver based at Central Park and was also part of Andy Banks’ coaching team. Wayne is a qualified gym teacher and their gym instructors have backgrounds in sport and dance.

but Kate says that Gym Bubbas is about much more than gymnastics: “Our base is in gymnastics so we look at physical development, improving balance, flexibility and coordination.

“But we adopt a holistic approach to child development so we also work on areas such as listening skills and interacting with adults and other children.

There’s also a cognitive element to the classes, involving colours and numbers. And there’s a lot of singing and group fun as well.

We take great care in working at each individual child’s own pace. This is essential for their development.”

She added: “One of the things parents like is that our classes are structured and they can see their children grow in every sense. We did a survey recently and the parents of the younger children said they are learning skills that are putting them in good stead for when they start nursery and school.”

Classes are run in six different age groups catering for children as young as four-months-old right up to eight-year-olds. There are also classes for children with additional needs and disabilities. Each class has a maximum of 12 children, with two instructors on duty at all times.

Children up to age 3½ must have a parent taking part in the class with them – a good excuse for mums and dads to join in the fun.

The classes are 45 minutes long for the younger children and one hour for children over 4½.

They are scheduled to fit in with school hours so the older children can go after school. And Gym Bubbas is also open on Saturdays for those who can’t fit it in during the week.

At the last count, Gym Bubbas was playing host to 450 children and Kate says many are coming thanks to recommendations from other mums and dads: “To have 450 children coming here in a week is amazing. A lot of people say that a friend has told them about us. So we must be doing something right.”

Kate and Wayne are about to celebrate Gym Bubbas’ fourth birthday and the first anniversary of their move into the purpose-built premises: “We launched the business in September 2011 and for three years we were a mobile operation. We had to take all our gear everywhere we went.

“Moving here was massive move. It took us six weeks, working around the clock, to turn what was a shell into this fantastic place and we eventually got in last September. It’s been a great move for us.”

And to think, it all started when Kate decided she wanted a lifestyle career after they had their son, Austin, in 2010: “I wanted to be able to do something that he could do as well.

We never thought it’d get to the point. It’s amazing!”

Make the pistou: pound the garlic and salt in a pestle and mortar.

Pound in the basil (you may need some oil to loosen it), then the cheese and oil. Or blitz everything in a processor. Boil the broad beans for 3 minutes, drain, refresh in cold water, slip off and discard the outer skins. Heat the oil in a pan. Add the onion, fry on a low heat for 10 mins, until soft. Add the potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and stock. Simmer for 10 minutes. Add the broad beans, asparagus and white beans. Simmer for 3 minutes.

Season and serve with a swirl of pistou.

Edmond is back doing what he loves most - cooking food and serving customers Two years ago Edmond Davari was a broken man. His restaurant business had just gone into liquidation, all his staff had lost their jobs and he faced financial ruin.

“I was physically, mentally and financially exhausted,” he said. “I felt like a dead man walking.”

To add to his troubles Edmond suffered a minor stroke as the struggle to keep his business afloat took its toll.

“I realised that my wife and children would rather have a poor father than a rich dead one,” said the 57-year-old awardwinning restaurateur.

“I decided that I had to put the business into liquidation as I had run out of answers. The bank had withdrawn my overdraft facilities and it was impossible to carry on. I had remortgaged up to the hilt and tried everything to keep afloat.”

At the peak of his catering career Edmond ran five restaurants in Plymouth and three in Exeter and had established a reputation for innovative and fine dining.

In September 2008 he opened two restaurants in a week on Sutton Harbour - Asia Chic and Rocco y Lola – to add to The Souk, Zucca and The Fish Market which he already ran.

“We had been planning the new openings for months - but as it turned out the timing could not have been worse. We were just about to enter the worst recession in living memory, Royal William Yard was providing increasingly stiff competition and some of the planned developments in Sutton Harbour had been delayed.

“As an independent business with limited means it was impossible to compete with the big chains with all their marketing spend.

“Looking back on what happened I now realise that my own ego and pride got in the way and I should have acted sooner than I did.

“The company owed money, but it was not a huge amount.

have gone on to run William Yard and (below) with his children their own cafes and Rocco and Lola restaurants.

“It was heartbreaking to drive past my restaurants the day after we had closed to see that the bailiffs had already been in and stripped them bare.

“We had lots of friends when the restaurants were running, but after we went into liquidation they were nowhere to be seen - just when we needed them most.”

Edmond said that one local supplier - who was owed money by his company called him to offer whatever help he could. “He still contacts me every month to see how I’m doing. I’m certainly more careful about who I choose to be friends with now.”

Just two months after the much-publicised closure of his business Edmond received the Editor’s Choice award at the Herald’s annual Business Awards. His father Farid was there to witness Edmond receive a standing ovation from hundreds of the city’s business leaders.

“It was the icing on the cake to be there with my father,” said Edmond. “I had no idea I was up for an award and it was absolutely overwhelming. I had not prepared a speech, but simply said that you learn a lot when you are down and that I would be back.

After the business closed, Edmond and his wife Eleni sat down to discuss what to do in the future. “We decided we didn’t want to be big again or run restaurants - although I have been tempted. I wasn’t prepared to go on benefits - so I had to find a way to pay the bills and keep a roof over our heads.”

The answer was to launch the World Food Cafe, preparing and cooking international dishes for people to enjoy alfresco at festivals and community events across the South West and further afield.

Edmond is no stranger to outside catering as his corporate

catering enterprise Main Event has been trading successfully for a number of years.

“We had been running a food stall at the monthly Royal William Yard market for sometime as well the annual Flavour Fest and other events,” said Edmond. “So it was just a question of taking that formula on to bigger things.”

Edmond now runs the World Food Cafe single-handed with the help of a small team of casual staff, attending events and festivals in Plymouth, across Devon and even as far away as Manchester.

“It’s hard work, but extremely enjoyable,” said Edmond. “I’m often up at 5am preparing for the day ahead and not back until the early hours of the following morning. But I’m doing what I have always loved - cooking good food and serving the public.

“The World Food Cafe is proving really successful and we are now being invited to more and more events in Plymouth and further afield. Our chicken and falafel wraps served with a choice of 15 fresh salads are extremely popular. At the Totnes Show people were literally queuing for hours to buy them.

“Without sounding arrogant, we really are the darling of festivals and other similar events and its all going in the right direction.

“We’re certainly keeping our heads above water and thankfully can pay the mortgage every month. I’m not a churchgoer but I do believe in God and I don’t think I would have survived without the strength which my faith gave me.

“I couldn’t be happier or more content. I can now spend more time with my wife and lovely children Rocco and Lola and all the stress of trying to keep a big business afloat has disappeared.

“I have learnt that failures make you humble. I would actively seek publicity when I had the restaurants, but I prefer to keep a low profile now.

A famous quote by Winston Churchill has been and continues to be an inspiration for Edmond: “Success is not final and failure is not fatal. It’s the courage to continue that counts.’

Talented Alice takes centre stage at concert in September Local student Alice Vickery is taking the choral music scene by storm after winning a professional contract through the Plymouth Music Accord Young Musician’s Platform.

As a result she will be performing her own show at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel on September 16.

The Devonport High School for Girls student, Alice stepped centre stage for a 20 minute audition landing herself a place at the 22nd International Concert Series, organized by Jeanie Moore to be held at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in the autumn.

“It was pretty nerve wracking, I had already auditioned for the Rotary Young Musician competition, and it was a great experience to learn from. After 20 minutes of singing your voice gets tired, so that’s something that I wanted to work on. I needed more control so along with my singing teacher Catherine Hamilton, we made sure to correct that.

This year world-famous Red Arrows aerobatics team will take to the air on the second night of the championships on Wednesday August 19. Celebrity chef Phil headlines at Flavou Celebrity chef, Phil Vickery will be cooking up a storm at this year’s Flavour Fest in Plymouth’s City Centre, from Friday August 14 to Sunday August 16.

A regular on ITV’s This Morning, author of 14 cookbooks and former head chef at The Castle in Taunton, Phil Vickery is headlining this year’s Flavour Fest. He will be appearing on the Flavour Fest Cookery Stage located under the Big Screen on the Piazza at 11am on Friday August 14.

Throughout the weekend celebrity chefs will stand shoulder to shoulder with the best of regional culinary talent on the stage of Flavour Fest’s Cookery Theatre, with a full programme of demonstrations over the three day festival.

Phil Vickery will be joined by fellow chefs Chris Tanner, Peter Gorton, Dez Turland and Richard Hunt and many others for cooking demos in the main marquee.

BBC’s David Fitzgerald and Gordon Sparks are competing in the Ready, Steady, Cook challenge at Flavour Fest this year on the Piazza. BBC Spotlight presenter Natalie Cornah will take on her own challenge of keeping both teams in check and playing by the rules as she

Flavour Fest, sponsored by Boringdon Hall, will have over 120 food and drink traders lining the streets, tempting visitors with a range of local produce including fresh fish, cheese, home baked cakes, artisan bread and pastries and cider.

There will be entertainment throughout the weekend and new Demo Marquee and Grow Share Cook areas on Guildhall Square. In the Place de Brest area there will be a bar providing a range of drinks from local ales, ciders and beers. There will also be a number of performances throughout the festival to entertain visitors while they enjoy a refreshing break.

Thousands of riders set to take part in 21st anniversary Megaride The 2015 Plymouth MegaRide will take place on Sunday August 9.

The MegaRide is now one of the UK’s largest charity motorcycle ride out with thousands of motorcyclists taking part, not including the pillion passengers or the vast number of spectators who show up on the day.

This year sees the 21st MegaRide organisers are hoping there will be an impressive turn out on the day.

The first MegaRide was started by Ron and Michele Densley of the Plymouth Motorcycle Club. Meeting at the former Novotel car park around 400 bikers turned up, the following year there were 700 riders and the event now attracts an estimated 7,000 bikers every year.

Thousands and thousands of bikers now pour into Lee Mill Industrial Estate for the charity ride which takes the bikers to Marley Head and then back into the city centre, ending up on Plymouth Hoe where the bikers are greeted with a huge array of trade stands, catering stands, live music and even fun fair rides for the youngsters.

Aug 23 CULTURE FEST Central Park August is all about celebrating the culture of all the people who live in this gorgeous city and county. It’s all about cultural music, food, dance, crafts and fun from around the world. It is hoped that many stalls will have cookery demonstrations and food sampling going on for you to try and buy, as well as hog roasts, local pasties, paella, falafel and much more. There will be activities for children with face painters, dancers, bouncy castles and pony rides allowing mum and dad to wander around the market stalls or take part in some Flamenco! The bandstand will feature different themes from various countries highlighting music, dance and skills from different countries, with Japan, Portugal, Hungary, Italy, Iran, Spain, the Caribbean and more being represented.

Following last year’s lively adaptation of ‘Godspell’ from Unleashed Theatre Company, this thought provoking and beautifully written piece comes as quite a contrast.

Based on St John’s gospel, it follows a group of refugees fleeing from Eastern Europe in the late 1930s at the start of the outbreak of war who, as they travel, tell the ‘greatest story’ on earth.

Into the Light runs from 7th-12th September in the open air at Buckfast Abbey. The shows start at 7:45pm and tickets are on sale from July and will be available from the Abbey book shop and Abbey gift shops.

Cut and Paste includes much iconic graphic design, with a local reach, for corporate clients - a stunning set of posters for Mobil, editorial and exhibition design, signage and brand identity - but this vibrant exhibition is also about the creation of work away from the office, and as the exhibition title suggests, the process of assemblage and a delight in making collages.

Ballard’s publishers asking if he would create cover art and design for 21 of the author’s works. In Donwood’s words: “As Ballard is arguably the finest and

most peculiar novelist to work in English in the 20th century, and perhaps my favourite writer, the outcome of the email was a foregone conclusion.” In producing the cover designs, Donwood worked with scientists in their laboratories, using acids, combustion, X-rays, chromatography, and various other experimental techniques working with the instinct that J.G. Ballard regarded his writing as a sort of experiment itself.

Oct 12 - 24 CHEZ PAULETTE COFFEE HOUSE Crosspoint, Roland Levinsky Building Following the success of Chez Paulette on the Sunset Strip in 2013, Peninsula Arts is delighted that it returns as part of this year’s Plymouth International Book Festival.

Artist and Plymouth University fine art lecturer Anya Lewin commissioned a replica of her father’s 1950s coffee house in the form of a film set that references the American TV Show ’77 Sunset Strip’ which also featured a set of the original Chez Paulette cafe.

Operating as a fully functioning coffee bar throughout the festival, it is the perfect venue to enjoy fine coffee, listen to poetry and readings. Free admission.

Plymouth City Council’s latest Director of Public Health (DPH) Annual Report is the first to be produced since the launch of Thrive Plymouth, an innovative ten year programme.

Thrive Plymouth focuses on four lifestyle behaviours: smoking, excessive drinking, inactivity and an unhealthy diet.

Together, these lead to four chronic illnesses: cancer, heart disease, stroke and respiratory disease – which together account for 54% of deaths in Plymouth.

As well as the focus on the four behaviours, the first year of Thrive Plymouth has been focused on workplace wellbeing, working with local businesses and other employers to enable staff to make healthier choices. The second year will be based around schools.

A Thrive Plymouth launch event was held last November attended by 100 city leaders, businesses and institutions and the leader of the council. Since the launch around 370 health checks have been delivered in workplaces, while a number of businesses have signed up to the Workplace Wellbeing Charter. Thrive Plymouth has also been involved with the Plymouth Business Show and with the Chamber of Commerce.

The new DPH Annual Report gives a range of information on the health inequalities across the city highlighting the ten year gap in life expectancy that exist between those who live in Devonport and those who live in Goosewell.

Professor Kelechi Nnoaham, director of public health for Plymouth City Council, said: “This is my first DPH Report since I joined Plymouth City Council last year and the first chance for us to give a progress report on our Thrive Plymouth initiative.

“The health of people in Plymouth is determined by a number of factors but behavioural choices (often associated with people’s social and economic conditions) exert a dominant effect.

“Even small changes to behaviour can make a big difference and it is up to all of us – communities, the voluntary sector, the public sector, businesses and policy makers – to collaborate in fundamentally different ways to enable people to make healthy choices.

“It is also about linking public health and Thrive Plymouth with other initiatives such as the Plymouth Plan, the new single strategic plan for Plymouth, looking ahead to 2031 and beyond.”

Other highlights of the annual report include: • Updates on specific public health workstreams in the city, from the Plymouth Strategic Alcohol Plan, to stop smoking and tobacco initiatives, to ensuring healthier catering is available at leisure and cultural facilities, to work the council is doing with other key partners to increase uptake of physical activity in the city, to the Plymouth Food Charter.

• Thrive Plymouth Dashboard – this ranks the 20 Plymouth electoral wards according to their Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 score (the current official measure of deprivation). It also includes ward by ward information on life expectancy and wellbeing, death rates, physical activity, healthy diet, smoking and drinking.

Information on schools related behaviour survey and the adult wellbeing survey.

• A range of infographics, maps and charts which illustrate health inequalities across the city.

• Advice and guidance on some of the things local people can do to improve their own health.

• Poster showing highlights of some of the public health progress made in Plymouth.

Majestic’s Ross is a real fighter Businessman Ross Kitto is a real fighter - in every sense of the word.

After battling to overcome testicular cancer in 2013, Ross has dedicated as much of his spare time as possible taking part in challenging events to raise funds for charity.

One of his latest charitable endeavours involved stepping into the boxing ring in front of a thousand-strong audience at the Plymouth Pavilions as part of a ‘White Collar Boxing’ evening in aid of local charity Jeremiah’s Journey.

Ross was one of 24 business people - two teams of 12 - who swapped the comfort of their day jobs to become one of JJ’s Heroes and don boxing gloves for three two minute rounds in the ring.

While the rest of the competitors spent 15 weeks in intensive training, Ross only became involved for the last five weeks.

One of the teams was being trained at the Hybrid Mixed Martial Arts and Fitness Centre in Cattedown.

“I have known Darren from Hybrid for many years and wanted to get back into martial arts again and he happened to mention the boxing event. I was put in as a reserve fighter in the first instance,” said Ross, who runs Majestic Cleaning South West.

“The team had already been training for 10 weeks so I had a lot of catch up to do. A couple of weeks later they told me I would actually be fighting on the night so I had to seriously step up the training to three times a week,” he said.

“All the boxers ended up battered and bruised but we were all proud to be part of raising funds for such a worthwhile cause. A huge thanks to everyone’s dedication inside and outside the ring.

“It was an incredible experience and the atmosphere in the Pavilions was fantastic,” added Ross.

The whole evening raised a much-needed £18,000 for Jeremiah’s Journey - thanks to Ross and the other 23 business men and women who took part.

The boxing was the latest in a series of fund-raising challenges Ross has undertaken since being treated for cancer.

“My main goal when I finished the chemotherapy treatment was to get as fit as possible as quickly as possible. I have always kept myself in good shape and have done a lot of judo and circuit training in the past,” said Ross.

“I was aware that there are a lot of challenging charity events are organised on a regular basis and decided to find out more.”

Earlier this year he organised a mixed team to take part in Rocksolid - an Exeter-based extreme fitness event.

Ross Kitto “The course was over five or 10 kilometres and involved a lot of mud, obstacles and other fitness challenges. I managed to get a ten-strong team together and challenged them to raise as much money as possible for Macmillan Nurses, who helped me so much during my illness. I was delighted that we managed to raise over £800 in the end.

“The medical team and my consultant at Derriford were superb and nurses and staff at the Mustard Tree Macmillan Centre were fantastic.”

His next fund-raiser will involve a skydive from 15,000 feet at Dunkeswell Airfield near Honiton when he hopes to raise up to £1000 for charity.

He will be joined by his best friend Paul Springett, manager of Plymouth-based jewellers Wray & Co, who was also a member of Ross’s Rocksolid team.

In August Ross is planning to get a team together to take part in Tough Mudder in Gloucestershire.

“Apparently this event involves some of the deepest, darkest mud and energy-sapping terrain,” said Ross, “so it will be a real challenge for everyone involved.”

Ross said that contracting cancer had totally changed him.

“When you go through cancer it does affect your outlook on life and the world around you. You realise how petty some people can be and how tough it is for lots of people. It can be a very selfish world and it’s nice to be able to give something back. Sadly it often takes a dramatic event in your life to make you aware of this.”

Ross said that he had lost two stones in weight after

contracting cancer and undergoing treatment. “It took everything out of me and I lost a lot of muscle mass. But I have been determined to get back in shape and now go to the gym four times a week and circuit training once a week.”

Ross said that his Majestic Cleaning business was going from strength to strength as well. “I’m very lucky to have so many loyal customers who have stood by me while I went through my personal battle with cancer,” he said.

Ross grew up in Plymouth and gained a business management degree after leaving school and then worked in management for a number of years. A career change saw him become an estate agent and he ran a branch of a Plymouth agency for four years.

His experience led to him then being appointed as regional sales manager for a leading supplier of building products and equipment.

An injury sustained at work eventually led to him being made redundant on medical grounds and Ross had to undergo extensive surgery on his knee and intensive treatment by physiotherapist Andrew Higgins to help him return to fitness.

Having had a less than satisfactory experience with having a carpet cleaned at home, Ross believed he could make a success of a carpet cleaning business by offering a better service than the man who cleaned his carpet.

Ross contacted the leading industry body the National Carpet Cleaners Association and underwent extensive training to qualify as a member.

He has since undergone further training to become an advanced member of the NCCA with specialist knowledge in spot and stain treatment and removal.

He is one of only a few professionals with this qualification in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall and is also approved by the WoolSafe organisation.

Ross focused his business in the South Hams initially but now has a growing number of satisfied customers in the Plymouth area as well as West Devon and South East Cornwall.

I have just returned from a truly memorable trip to Barbados. It all started on a not so memorable cold Friday morning at 2 am, when I was picked up by our transport company and driven to Gatwick Airport.

My flight was with Virgin Airways and I was travelling in their Premium Economy cabin. The extra leg room, and seat pitch, gave the comfort that made the nine hour flight more bearable. Free drinks and the largest brandy I have ever seen helped the flight seem a lot quicker! The extensive choice of films and entertainment, although a bit of a blur, I seem to remember were excellent.

On arrival in sunny Barbados I was transferred to the Mango Bay Hotel, on the west coast of this beautiful island. This all inclusive hotel was situated right on a sandy beach with crystal clear waters and, although only a small hotel, it had a great atmosphere and the live music in the evening was very entertaining.

The hotel was ideally based and within easy walking distance of the town with its designer boutiques and upmarket restaurants. It had a very friendly and welcoming feel to it.

The next day we visited, and had lunch, at The Sandy Lane Hotel. This exquisite, and exclusive hotel is a holiday home to many of the rich and famous including Simon Cowell. The 112 elegant rooms were furnished to the highest standard.

With the latest 50 inch televisions and entertainment systems in every room it is not difficult to see why stars and footballers visit this exceptional hotel, although, just my luck, there wasn't one to be seen during my visit.

The hotel also has one five bedroom villa which costs $25000 a night, off season. I immediately booked my family in for two weeks! Lunch was a lavish affair, and with the back

drop of the white sandy beach and tranquil azure sea, this was the perfect setting.

It was then time to leave and transfer to the Fairmont Royal Pavilion set on St James' beach. This was to be my home for the next two nights. This five star hotel was set directly on the beach with rooms that were all but on the powder sand.

The whole complex had an understated elegance throughout. It even had its own resident green monkeys which seemed more than willing to engage in conversation (or was that just too much rum punch).

The water was crystal clear and, although 30 feet deep we only managed to see one turtle, which was an

amazing experience and the highlight of the trip. We then set sail back to Bridgetown Harbour enjoying a spectacular sunset. The whole trip lasted about four hours but was the most wonderful experience and one not to be missed.

The next morning we visited Cobblers Cove, a boutique hotel which is a blend of English country home style and authentic Caribbean charm. After a short tour of the hotel we were treated to lunch at their Camelot restaurant, renowned as one of the best on the island.

The food was exceptional and the dessert was one that any winning MasterChef contestant would be proud of. We then returned to the Fairmont Royal Pavilion. We were now able to relax and enjoy the hotel facilities, which included a swimming pool, jacuzzi, tennis courts and over 100 in-room spa treatments.

In celebration of this year’s sporting events in Plymouth, which include, the vintage cycle race, L’Eroica, the British Diving Championships, and a 2015 Rugby World Cup Training Camp, the national tourist board is on a quest to find the country’s top sporting destination, and has asked the public to send in their own nominations.

By submitting an image of their ‘home of sport’ sports fans will help decide the jewel in England’s sporting crown, no mean feat in a country that is world-renowned for its sporting heritage.

Chair of Destination Plymouth, Duncan Currall, said: “Britain’s Ocean City is a major UK destination for sport, famous for the Plymouth Life Centre and world-class diving facilities as well as home to many Olympic athletes and well known swimming clubs such as Plymouth Leander. We also have a huge sailing community and have hosted a number of largescale sailing events like the America’s Cup World Series and La Solitaire du Figaro as well as Transat next year.

“Being right in between coast and country we have many beauty spots for cycling, walking and scuba diving as well as providing centres such as the Plymouth Ski-Centre and Mountbatten Watersports Centre. We are also proud of our sporting teams such as Plymouth Argyle Football Club, Plymouth Albion Rugby Team and the Plymouth Raiders.

“As the Chair of Destination Plymouth I have seen numerous stunning pictures that not only show our city off but really emphasise the Active Plymouth culture. This campaign gives us the opportunity to be proud of our city and show the rest of the country why we are Britain’s Ocean City.

Approved nominations will appear on a national sports wall at www.englandhomeofsport.com and will be entered into a prize draw to win a selection of sporting experiences.

Entries will close at midnight on August 31, after which an expert panel will work through the nominations to establish a shortlist of sporting hubs.

The shortlist will open to public vote on September 16, with the destination that receives the highest number of votes announced as England’s Home of Sport on October 23.

Plymouth College of Art is joining in with the Plymouth Arts Trail for the first time this summer. Visitors will be welcome at a working studio set up in the Create Gallery at the college.

Drawn to the Valley, a network of artists based in and around the Tamar Valley, have organised the Open Studios and created a special membership so the college can be involved. In all, 87 artists are exhibiting this year.

I went down to the college to meet with the four students who have been selected to exhibit their work in this Open Studio, which runs from August 29 to September 6.

These students will show and sell work from their creative practices and encourage visitors to explore the finished and developing work on display.

Kicking off on the first day of the Plymouth Arts Trail, Saturday 29 August, the students are planning an opening event from 3pm to 5pm that day, with invited guests and public access for all.

By Work in progress and on display will include paintings, prints, drawings, millinery, handbags and clothes.

Julie Ellis, a painter and printmaker on the BA (Hons) Painting, Drawing and Printmaking programme, draws upon the city and landscape of South Devon.

“My work is inspired by experience and memories and a deep connection with my environment,” she said. “I seek to evoke memory and narrative for the viewer through our shared responses to aesthetics.”

In a working studio in the Create Gallery, Sharon Morgan, who graduated this year from the BA (Hons) Fashion programme, will be creating contemporary headwear and accessories using traditional techniques.

“I am a milliner and I love moulding and shaping fabric,” she said. “For my graduate collection this summer I pushed the craft element of my work by printing fabric inspired by post-

Kate Targett explores the possibilities of drawing in different media through process-led works that revolve around ideas of memory and the ways drawing can express personal or collective memory.

“Broadly I think of my work in paint, print and collage as drawing,” said Kate, who studies on the BA (Hons) Painting, Drawing and Printmaking programme. “For the Plymouth Arts Trail I am bringing together earlier experiments with more recent up-scaled and collaged print landscapes.”

Oona Wagstaff, makes abstract oil paintings with an emphasis on the intuitive and expressive, building up highly textured surfaces of inner and outer landscapes, with allusions to the natural world. The current body of work explores the atmosphere of the local, coastal war-time buildings and objects around Maker Heights.

Commenting on taking part in the Plymouth Arts Trail, Oona shared:“This is a fantastic opportunity to join in a small group show, making links with fellow artists in the region and the wider artistic community.”

The company, which recently celebrated its third anniversary, co-organised Digital Plymouth during the Plymouth Business Week in June and is now planning a regular forum where individuals and businesses involved in the digital industry can come together to network and share experiences.

The next event will be at a city centre venue on September 24 and it is hoped that a large number of people working in the digital sector will attend.

Elixel’s managing director Gavin Jones said: “The Digital Plymouth event in June proved extremely successful and clearly underlined the level of interest which exists in such a gathering.

“Digital Plymouth was a celebration of the digital culture we have in the city and featured a collection of talks for business owners covering a variety of topics from ‘open data’ to ‘the changing face of PR. “We are now actively collaborating with other Plymouthbased digital businesses such as Thinqtanq, Sonic DC and Tin Digital to provide regular events organised by the digital community for the digital community.

“There are a growing number of individuals and businesses in the city working in the digital sector and we want to encourage a greater degree of collaboration and see businesses working together for the benefit of the city as a whole. Our aim is to build a strong team of businesses which have the same passion for the industry and its potential in Plymouth.

Elixel’s plans for the digital forum are just the latest in a series of business achievements and initiatives by the award-winning digital creative agency which specialises in responsive website design, app development and branding by ‘bringing pixels to life.’

Earlier this year the company played a key role in the collaborative development of Artory, the ultimate guide to the cultural scene in Plymouth. Artory, is a What’s On app which has significant benefits for users and valuable feedback for venues and event organisers. More than 2,500 people have already downloaded the app and it is attracting strong interest from other cities which are keen to see how it works.

While the Artory app is designed with mass market appeal, Elixel’s latest app is designed specifically for medical students and their lecturers. The app, which is called Emplace, has been under development for six months and was due to be launched at the end of July.

Working closely with Plymouth University’s School of Health Professions, the Elixel team - Gavin, Paul, Christian Cook and Becky Veater - have not only developed the app but also undertaken a full branding exercise for the project.

Gavin explained: “As part of their studies, medical students undertake a whole range of placements which provide them with experience and skills in their specialist field. The Emplace app is designed to help them cope with the stresses often Elixelab...open device laboratory associated with these placements and provides a range of functions and features which benefit both the students and their lecturers.”

The new Emplace app will be trialled with medical students working in the paediatrics and nutrition sectors before being rolled out across all medical sectors.

The team have also been busy preparing for the August launch of an enhanced version of the extremely successful app for Plymouth University’s Students Union as well as relaunching their own website to highlight the best of their work over the last three years.

Meanwhile Elixel’s open device laboratory - known as Elixelab - is proving increasingly popular with mobile app and website developers, as well as businesses and other organisations. Elixelab is completely free to use and enables developers and businesses alike to test websites on a wide variety of devices.

With Elixel’s workload continuing to grow, the company is now in the process of recruiting its first new member of staff.

“We will be taking on a student from Plymouth University’s Digital Arts and Technology degree course for a year-long paid placement and are now in the process of defining the skill sets required,” said Gavin. “It’s an important step for us and part of our long-term growth strategy.”

Plymouth Energy Community (PEC) has won a prestigious national Observer Ethical Award.

PEC won the Community Energy Project category at the glittering awards ceremony held recently in London. Runners up in the category were Low Carbon Hub and Repowering London.

The awards ceremony, which celebrated the achievements of those in the environmental and ethical world, boasted celebrities, bloggers and even television soap stars.

PEC, which Plymouth City Council helped establish in June 2013 with a start-up grant and loan and continues to support, is a Community Benefit Society owned and run by its members that aims to help residents transform how they buy, use and generate power in the city.

PEC aims to provide more affordable warmth to people living in Plymouth, in line with recommendations from the Fairness Commission. The city has 11,500 households (10%) in fuel poverty and much of the housing stock is poorly insulated and energy efficient.

Alistair Macpherson, chief executive of PEC, said: “We are really proud to get this Observer award as it celebrates our

focus on local environmental and social justice.

“It also further endorses the support Plymouth City council has given us. The council should be applauded for enabling the creation of PEC and providing loan finance for community owned solar power. Many other areas are now following Plymouth’s lead.”

Leader of Plymouth City Council, Councillor Tudor Evans said: “PEC is one the city’s great success stories and we are delighted that the team’s hard work has received this recognition.

“PEC has grown from a Plymouth City Council initiative into a large community-led operation which offers a range of excellent services to help the people of Plymouth.”

The Ethical Awards celebrated a decade with founder Lucy Siegle hosting sponsors, bloggers and celebrities in attendance. Other winners on the night included Emma Watson, Coronation Street, Swedish denim brand Nudie Jeans, Yoko Ono and many more.

• Launch of a volunteer programme: training 30 community volunteers to provide free home energy advice visits to more than 200 households in Plymouth at risk of fuel poverty. Volunteers will enable these residents to save around £16,000 in 1 year on energy costs. Their wider community work will provide direct energy saving knowledge to over 800 residents.

• Installed solar panels on 21 different schools and public buildings via its sister organisation PEC Renewables. The solar panels are funded by the sale of community shares as well as a loan from the council. A second wave of solar roof installations will include the Plymouth Life Centre.

• Previous awards won by PEC and its sister organisation PEC Renewables, which provides locally-owned renewable energy installations include the 2014 UK Social Enterprise ‘Investment Deal of the Year’, 2014 Regen SW Green Energy Award for ‘Best Community Initiative’, and the 2014 Abercrombie Award for ‘Best Green Project’.
