Making the most of Mayflower 400 Congratulations to our friends at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel for their initiative in helping to launch a new campaign called Make A Difference for Mayflower 400. The hotel’s management team have partnered with Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and the City Centre Company to encourage businesses and other organisations to pledge their support in ensuring that Plymouth looks at its best in 2020, when the Mayflower 400 celebrations will be making headlines not only in the UK and USA, but also all over the world. There are countless ways in which help can be provided - including time, expertise, materials and, of course, cash. You can read all about the campaign on page 40 of this issue. Congratulations also to our partners at Cross Rhythms Community Radio who played a key role in ensuring that an important delegation from Plymouth, Massachusetts, were given the red carpet treatment during their recent visit to Britain’s Ocean City. The visitors from America were led by Dr Paul Jehle, who is chair of the faith committee for Mayflower 400 in the USA. During his visit Dr Jehle commented: “American liberty is the child of English liberty. This is a providential story linking the UK and the USA.” The full enormity of the significance of the Pilgrim Fathers and their epic journey to the New World is, sadly, not widely appreciated here in Plymouth - or the rest of the UK come to that. But I’m sure by the time Mayflower 400 is celebrated here in Plymouth we will all know a lot more about it all! Hope you enjoy the latest issue! BUSINESS MATTERS

James and Matt riding high with Rockin Bikes Cycling fanatics James Scawn and Matthew Allott are living the dream, selling and hand-building custom-made bikes for customers across the region – and the great news for Plymouth cyclists is that their shop is right on our doorstep. Just a nine mile bike ride away, in fact. James and Matt of Rockin Bikes at Yelverton are every day riders themselves so they’ve got a better idea than most what cyclists want and expect from a bike shop. Such as: all the best brands, great bikes for the kids, a range of demo bikes to try out, essential accessories and cycling gear, a workshop with a full-time mechanic, and staff who know what they’re talking about. James, who has worked in bike shops ever since leaving school, joined forces with Matt to open Rockin Bikes in December 2012. It was just after the success of the London Olympics and Bradley Wiggins’ victory in the Tour de France. Suddenly, it seemed everyone wanted to take up cycling. The shop then was next to the Rock Inn at Yelverton but the business soon outgrew the site so in the summer of 2014, it moved into the building that used to be the Leg O’Mutton pub. “Where we are standing now, in the front desk and mountain bike area, used to be the bar,” said Matt. “The road bike section is where the pub restaurant used to be. “It was a major upheaval having to move and we don’t ever want to do it again, but it’s been a brilliant move for us. We

10\

The Plymouth Magazine April 2016

can now stock a large range of very desirable brands and we’ve got the workshop downstairs for custom builds and our repairs and servicing department.” Cyclists from across Devon and Cornwall are choosing to buy their bikes from the shop because, says Matt, they know they’ll get trusted advice: “We’ve both been into bikes all our lives and we’ve got the knowledge, experience and expertise that customers want, whether they’re looking for their first bike or if they want something really special. “We welcome people coming in for a chat, we’ll give them the time and the guidance they need,” he added. Children’s lightweight bikes start from £100 and include a colourful selection from Frog. The quality range of adult hybrid, mountain and road bikes starts at £300, rising to several thousands of pounds. Brands include Whyte, Ibis, Scott, Orange, Focus, Wilier, Enigma, Merida, Frog and a new addition this spring, Santa Cruz: “That’s the hottest brand at the moment, along with Whyte,” said Matt. “We only stock the sort of bikes we’d want to ride ourselves. We’ve cherrypicked the brands and we research all new stock beforehand. We get a lot of cyclists in who say ‘at last, a proper bike shop’, which is great because that’s what we set out to achieve.” If the sky’s the limit, you could commission a hand-built custom bike that’s made just for you: “They can be anything you want,” said James. “We’ve done lots of them and no two are the same. We can also adapt the bikes we’ve got in stock

and we encourage people to have a look and think about tweaks that would make it just a little bit different so it would be their own. We enjoy the whole process – it’s like a dream job to be honest!” The shop is perfectly located slap bang in the middle of Drake’s Trail, the 21-mile walking and cycling route between Plymouth and Tavistock. And, with Dartmoor just up the road, it’s ideal for people wanting to make use of the shop’s bike hire service. James and Matt also play an active part in the local cycling community, holding Tuesday night mountain bike rides from the shop and screening films at Yelverton Cinema, including in March the Lance Armstrong biopic, The Program. “One of the great things about the cycling community is that it’s very sociable,” said James. “It’s one of the reasons we enjoy it so much. That and the fact that it keeps you fit and you get a sense of adrenaline and freedom when you’re on a bike.” The shop offers servicing at different price points with inhouse mechanic Ed Burn and can also provide on-the-spot repairs. There have even been times when they’ve gone out on rescue missions: “If somebody is stuck, we’ll come out and help them if we can and get them back on the road,” said James. “We can’t always do that but if they can manage to get to the shop, we’ll certainly be able to get them fixed up.” Rockin Bikes is open 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday with 5pm closing on Saturdays, and 10am to 2pm on Sundays. For more photos and information, visit the website. The Facebook page, with 1,200 ‘likes’, also has up to date news on stock arrivals and events. The next new arrival could well be a coffee machine for customers … watch this space!

Quality local produce takes centre stage at Theatre Royal Plymouth café

Café@TRP really is unique in what it can offer to customers. What we were looking for was consistent quality and we’ve been able to achieve that, thanks to our suppliers.” Annie says that the new lay-out has been similarly well received: “It’s much more than just a café area that we have here. We wanted the main hub to be a nice and open and the glass frontage means it’s bright and we’ve got great views. “But we also wanted to provide alternative areas for customers to use. The gallery upstairs is very popular and people seem to enjoy the artists we feature. And the sofa area is a brilliant place to sit and chat and to watch the world go by. “It’s because our space is so flexible that we can cater for all groups of people. Julie has been serving customers at the theatre for 25 years and she’s made a lot of friends on both sides of the counter in that time: “Everyone’s so friendly and cheerful, it’s like a family. I love it here and I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else!” Usual opening hours at Café@TRP are 10.30am to 10.30pm, Monday to Saturday – check the website for latest details.

FOOD MATTERS

Dan Thomson pictured with Supha (left) and Saowanee

Authentic Asian dishes that are just made to be shared at Supha’s When she was a young girl growing up in southern Thailand, Supha Kaden loved nothing more than to help her mother to prepare the family meals. The recipes they followed had been passed down the family through generations and involved making all the sauces and curry pastes from scratch, using fresh herbs and spices that would need to be ground using good old fashioned elbow grease: “We all had to do our bit and that was one of my jobs,” says Supha. Wind the clock forward and move the location a few thousand miles to Plymouth and she’s now making these authentic Thai dishes at Supha’s Street Food Emporium at East Quay House on Sutton Harbour. The Emporium is where Rocco y Lola used to be and it boasts one of the finest outlooks in the whole of Plymouth. It’s one of the reasons why Dan Thomson, creator of the B-Bar Thai noodle restaurant at Barbican Theatre, chose it for his new venture with head chef Supha, who was head chef at B-Bar before moving on to other challenges. Serving dishes from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos and

16\

The Plymouth Magazine April 2016

Myanmar, the emphasis at the Emporium is on sharing food and trying new flavours. And, with Supha (pronounced ‘Super’) and her kitchen team cooking in full view, you can discuss how you like your food and ask for their advice when ordering. “Our whole ethos is cooking fresh food in front of people so they can see how everything is made,” said Dan. “And we want people to try different dishes, to put them in the middle of the table and to all tuck in together. They don’t have to, they can just order in the traditional way if they wish, but we think sharing opens up the opportunity to find favourite new dishes. And so far, that seems to be the case, 90% of the time. It sparks conversation among people and they ask us about the herbs and spices we’ve used. “I can confidently state that we’re doing dishes here that you won’t find anywhere else in Plymouth,” he added. It seems word has already got out that Supha’s has got something new and fresh to offer Plymouth: “The response has been amazing,” said Dan. “Already, we’ve had a lot of repeat customers and people who’ve come in after recommendations from their friends who’ve been. “And it’s great, having people walk through the door and almost stop in their tracks really, saying ‘wow, that smells fantastic’. We’ve been blown away by how people have reacted.” The word ‘restaurant’ isn’t used at Supha’s, as Dan explains: “We want customers to feel as though they can just pop in for an informal eating experience at any time, whether it’s lunchtime, in the afternoon or in the evening. The menu, the pricing, everything, is geared so that people can, for example, come straight from work for a bite to eat with friends. We call it unpretentious dining.” Signature dishes are Pla Neung Ma-now (freshly steamed whole fish stuffed with lemon grass, lime leaf and garlic, served in a chilli and lime sauce), and two curries made using the recipes Supha learnt from her mother: Gang koua, with bamboo, green beans, coconut milk, pumpkin or squash and lime leaves with either chicken, beef or veg; and Gang massaman, with coconut milk, peanuts, new potatoes and onions, again with a choice or meat or vegetables. Starters – or ‘Street Small’ dishes are all under £5 and mains – ‘Street Big’ – are £8 to £9. Fresh fish specials are around the £15 mark. As an added temptation, there’s a lunchtime special menu

for £5 a dish, just perfect whether you’re on your lunch break or enjoying a lazy day beside the harbour. The menu includes many dishes that are gluten-free. For Supha, who’s lived in the UK for almost 20 years, introducing the food she’s loved all her life to new people is like a dream come true: “It’s really nice to be able to share this food with everyone,” she said. “More people now go to the South East Asia and enjoy real street food and when they return we want them to be able to experience it here. We feel a lot of restaurants here have adapted dishes for the perceived western palette. The dishes we do are more authentic and people really seem to like that. “I like seeing so many of our customers come in and understand that this is food to share,” Supha added. “They order a selection and all tuck in, which is how this food is meant to be enjoyed. We can suggest sharing options for them. Of course, not everyone likes to share their dinner, and that’s ok too!” The Emporium is bright and bubbly and features artwork by Mongolian artist Tod Otgonbayar, which all adds to the cheery ambience. And then, of course, there’s the location: “Is there a better spot in Plymouth?” asks Dan. “And just over there is the fish quay where we get so much of our fantastic fresh seafood. “We only opened in February and we haven’t been blessed with great weather but there are some days where we’re in sunshine pretty much all day. When the sun comes round, the tables and chairs outside are a fantastic place to sit and watch the sunset. It’s gorgeous.” Perfect, in fact, for the planned 5 O’clock Club, when friends can sit out and share a bottle of bubbly and local mussels cooked Thai-style. Supha’s has 46 covers with additional tables and chairs outside when the weather behaves. Current opening times are 12 noon to 10pm, Wednesday to Saturday, with 9pm closing on Sunday. Tuesday opening is planned soon – visit the website and Facebook page for updates and for the full menu. And they’ve just started doing takeaway, too.

History in the spotlight as 2016 festival programme is announced The 2016 Plymouth History Festival has now been confirmed, with a packed programme of 100 different events. This is the fourth year that the monthlong celebration of Plymouth’s history has taken place and details are now live at www.plymhistoryfest.wordpress.com. The festival, co-ordinated by the Council’s Arts and Heritage service, will run from Saturday May 7 to Sunday June 5 and includes exhibitions and displays, special events, family activities, talks, walks and tours. Exhibitions will explore subjects such as the Blitz, Charles Darwin, the Battle of Jutland and the history of Plymouth’s sports and sporting personalities. Walks will take place all over the city, letting people follow in the footsteps of famous figures such as the Parkers of Saltram and The Beatles, as well as discover some of the lesser-known aspects of Plymouth‘s heritage. Talks will cover topics as diverse as Agnes Weston, Lawrence of Arabia, Boer War soldiers, historical mining landscapes and the 1970s. They are set to take place in venues as varied as the Plymouth Synagogue, St Andrew‘s Church, Ford Park Cemetery and the Athenaeum.

Special events will include an open day at the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre, a medieval tournament in Plympton St Maurice and Local Studies Day at Plymouth University’s Robbins Conference Centre. Families will be able to enjoy arts and crafts activities, a children’s quiz, the chance to meet a costumed re-enactor dressed as a World War I nurse and more. Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “Once again a large number of organisations and individuals have come together to create a really impressive programme for this year‘s History Festival. Just like the last three years, “I’m sure 2016 will provide people of all ages with lots of opportunities to celebrate and learn more about our heritage – as well as highlight just how fascinating Plymouth’s history is.”

••

More events will be added to the History Festival website as they are confirmed. A festival brochure will be available from early April and you can also stay up-to-date with the developments at www.facebook. com/plymhistoryfest and www. twitter.com/plymhistoryfest.

Spectacular start of the last Transat Race in Plymouth Sound and (above) top female solo sailor Isabelle Joschke who has signed up for the event

All set for The Plymouth is gearing up for one of the major events of the year in April when the world-famous yacht race The Transat arrives in the city. Approximately 30 boats and their skippers will arrive in Britain’s Ocean City on Sunday April 24, where they will moor until the start of the race on Monday May 2. Visitors are invited to get involved by welcoming the sailors into the harbour and enjoy an ambience of waterfront fun during their stay in the city. From Friday April 29 the Barbican and historic harbour will be transformed, offering a bustling race village experience and an exciting feast of free entertainment. During the weekend there will be a brand new Ocean City Rhythm and Blues Jazz Festival, an air display, firework display and street entertainment. The Transat race will commence at 2.30pm on Monday May 2 and the boats, along with their solo skippers, start their voyage to New York. One of Europe’s top female solo sailors has added her name to the startlist of the Class40 fleet for the 2016 edition of The Transat. The Franco-German sailor Isabelle Joschke, aged 39, will be racing the Class40, Generali Mixite, in the four-yearly 3,000-mile classic that sets sail for New York from Plymouth. Joschke will be the third female skipper on the start line of The Transat, all of whom are racing in the highly competitive Class40 monohull fleet. “I have dreamt for years about sailing a Class40, a larger boat

Transat 2016 that suits my style,” said Joschke who has long campaigned for gender equality in sport. “I have set myself a racing programme that I think suits my sailing characteristics and I would like to thank Generali for giving me this opportunity.” Joschke has now embarked on an intensive training programme in March and April including completing the mandatory 1,000-mile qualifier for the race. Helping her will be the French solo sailing legend and Vendée Globe winner Alain Gautier, who said: “I will help Isabelle in her new challenge and I continue to work closely with Generali with whom I have a history that has now lasted over 20 years.” Joining Joschke on The Transat Class40 start line will be the veteran British skipper Miranda Merron at the helm of Campagne de France and the experienced German sailor Anna-Maria Renken on Nivea. The Transat is the oldest and first solo Transatlantic race to be created, the first edition starting from Plymouth in 1960, and is now one of the most important events in the professional racing calendar. Blondie Hasler, the founder of the Transat in 1960, spelt out a simple vision for this now historic race - one man, one boat, one ocean. But while the principle behind the race remains the same, a new generation of ocean racing machines sees a classic reborn in 2016. Giant Ultimes, flying Multi50s, powerful IMOCA60s and hardy Class40s, helmed by some of the world’s finest solo sailors, could make for one of the fastest crossings yet.

WHAT’S ON

Internationally renowned potter exhibits at Barbican gallery Other exhibitions and events

Internationally renowned potter John Pollex is exhibiting at Plymouth’s 45 Southside Gallery in April and May.

Until Dec 31 FIRST WORLD WAR EXHIBITION - ON THE HOME FRONT Cotehele Not many people are aware that Cotehele House is a war memorial. To commemorate the centenary of the First World War we are holding an exhibition of items loaned from members of the local community, who have generously shared their stories with us. The exhibition will be on until the end of 2018. This year’s theme is ‘On the Home Front’.

John Pollex studied at Sir John Cass Art College in Whitechapel in the 1960s. From there he went on to become a technician at Harrow College of Art ceramics course. After two years at Harrow, he became assistant to acclaimed potters Bryan Newman and Colin Pearson. Inspired by their teaching, in 1971 John moved to Plymouth, subsequently opening his own studio on Plymouth’s historic Barbican. It was here he established his reputation based on the English slipware tradition. John went on to exhibit and lecture across the UK, Europe, New Zealand and America. In the early 1980s John took part in a lecture tour in New Zealand with the late contemporary American ceramist Don Reitz. Consequently he became intrigued by the more colourful work being produced by potters in the USA. From this period on his work started to take a visually dramatic turn. Painters such as Sir Howard Hodgkin, Robert Natkin, Patrick Heron and Hans Hofmann inspired the use of vibrant colours. In the mid-1980s John developed a different style of working by discarding slip trailers in favour of paintbrushes, sponges

Today John works from his home studio and is involved in writing articles for specialist ceramic publications alongside teaching and mentoring his current apprentice. After 15 years John returns to the Barbican with a solo exhibition at 45 Southside Gallery. After two record years, the family-run company has now been hand-picked by global giants Whirlpool corporation to create their first and only dedicated showroom in the UK. When Whirlpool corporation bought out the Hotpoint, Indesit and Cannon brands last year, it made them the biggest electrical appliance company in the world and added to their existing names such as Kitchen Aid, Maytag, and Ignis. And, thanks to the reputation of Beacon Electrical, they’ve chosen Plymouth as the location for their UK showcase. To create the bespoke showroom, the Beacon Electrical branch next to the Pennycomequick roundabout in Stuart Road has just undergone a two-month transformation and now has an open plan layout with distinct areas for refrigeration, washing, cooking, and small kitchen appliances. Walking into the store, there’s a real ‘wow’ factor everywhere you look. Starting in the refrigeration area, you then turn into the washing & drying zone before entering the dishwashing and cooking areas. From free standing to in-built appliances and with a range of colours – white, cream, black, graphite and red – you’ll be spoilt for choice. Finally, you enter the small kitchen appliances display area, with microwaves, coffee-makers, mixers, toasters and kettles. “We think the showroom is stunning,” said store manager Charlie Roberts. “People can come in, walk around, and plan the kitchen of their dreams.” He explained that Whirlpool had chosen Beacon Electrical because of customer recommendations and feedback: “Customer service is the bedrock of our company and we have a very good reputation with our customers,” he said. “It’s what we pride ourselves on. “Our sales staff are all trained in-house. They’re knowledgeable, personable and friendly, everything that Whirlpool corporation would want and expect.” With its city location and a large, free customers’ car park behind the showroom, the Stuart Road shop is ideal for people who don’t want to drive out of town. And, Charlie says, it’s a shopping experience that customers will enjoy: “This is the best possible retail environment in the country. “Because of the way we’ve designed the shop, we are able to display a complete range offered by the manufacturer. This is something that no other store can offer as they mix brands in

order to cover pricing positions in the market. That’s not always in the best interests of the customer. Often, if you’re looking for an appliance by a brand you like, they’ll only have one or two choices of models so it’s possible to make a bad choice. “We can offer customers a range and a service that they can’t find anywhere else. We even have interactive areas where people can see how appliances work and how they fit.” The store has a price match scheme, where they’ll match any retailer or internet price, subject to terms and conditions. When a customer chooses their items to purchase, shop staff will immediately go online to compare prices. For people looking for a completely new look in their kitchens, the shop is able to offer multi-buy discount schemes. Add the free, prompt delivery for homes in a range between Torbay and Looe, plus promotions on installation and removal, and you can see why Beacon Electrical is THE place to buy new appliances for so many people. “We can offer flexibility to suit our customers’ needs, which nationals quite often can’t,” said Charlie. “It comes back to that personal aspect again.” Finance options are available – just ask the shop team. And they’ll also help you make the right decision for your needs and budget: “We understand that buying kitchen appliances is a major purchase for people, whether it’s entry level or premium products,” said Charlie. “It’s an investment and it needs to last. We don’t do the hard sell bit. We’re here to offer expert advice so that you can make informed decisions.” The link-up with Whirlpool is the latest chapter in an amazing success story for the company, which began life in the 1970s as a single store in Beacon Park. Set up by local couple Chris and Sue Higgins initially to sell blinds, it soon expanded to focus on electrical appliances. The firm now has five stores, three in Plymouth – including the original head office in Beacon Park – and two in the South Hams. These days, the business is run by sons Nick and Mark, although Chris and Sue are still on the board. Charlie says linking up with Whirlpool corporation isn’t just great news for Beacon Electrical, it’s also a boost for the city and customers: “This is a fantastic opportunity for a local Plymouth company working in tandem with a huge worldwide brand to offer our local customers something special. “And we’re still able to keep our own, independent identity at all of our branches. People will still get the same trusted, personal service from us that they’ve always had. It’s great news all round.”

PROPERTY MATTERS

Leading estate agent sets the standard again with hottest properties on Twitter Leading independent estate agents Mansbridge Balment have established a reputation for ground-breaking initiatives - and their latest innovation is certainly a hot one! The company has already set the standard by introducing seven day trading, creating a nine-point customer service promise and ensuring all of its staff are fully qualified as members of the National Association of Estate Agents and now they have turned to Twitter for their latest move. A new Twitter feed - in addition to their existing one - has been created where details of properties that have literally just come onto the market are advertised. Chris Mervyn, branch and marketing manager at Mansbridge Balment’s city office in Mutley, explained: “We are now uploading images and brief details of the latest properties we have taken on - literally within minutes of taking an instruction and agreeing a valuation. “Our valuation team upload the details straight to @hotproplist on Twitter even before they return to the office - which means the information is online

before it reaches any of the web portals. “Twitter followers can see details of new properties on the market before anyone else, without battling through any other company messages. It couldn’t be quicker!” Mansbridge Balment managing director Darren Lawson said: “Social media is playing an increasingly important part in the property world and we feel that this initiative provides real added value for our clients.” While Mansbridge Balment Is embracing the benefits of the internet, the company is also quick to highlight the potential downside of appointing online agents to handle property sales. Darren said: “These low cost fees may look very attractive, but homeowners need to remember that online agents invariably have very little local knowledge or professional qualifications. They can’t guarantee escorted viewings as we do and keeping in touch with the progress of a sale can be difficult. “Competition is a healthy thing and it’s good for clients and good for agents alike. We certainly don’t fear it. But we would urge homeowners to choose carefully. “Our experience is that the bitterness of the poor service received, soon outweighs the sweetness of a cheap fee.” Chris added: “We believe we do online better than internet agents. It’s one thing to have a property on the internet, but it’s another thing altogether to ensure that it is seen on the internet. “Our enhanced listings on national portals such as Right Move, with larger pictures and greater content, has resulted in a 50 per cent increase in the number of people clicking through to the property details. “We are achieving around 36 per cent greater effectiveness with our listings than the average on Right Move, and that’s according to the portal giant themselves!” In another development Mansbridge Balment has introduced the concept of area experts. Members of the team are assigned specific districts of the city which enables them to gather the widest possible range of information about amenities, schools and services which they can then pass on to potential purchasers. Chris said: “Location will always be a fundamental part of the house buying process, but you might be surprised to learn that some agents don’t do their homework thoroughly enough on exactly what individual areas of the city have to offer. “We don’t just focus on what makes a property special, we make it our business to find out what’s special about where it is too, the quality of schools and shops, leisure and social facilities – even which buses serve the area.” In another endorsement of Mansbridge Balment’s commitment to professionalism and customer service, the business is celebrating seven consecutive years as a designated estate agent with the Relocation Agent Network (RAN) in Plymouth. RAN is a national network of over 650 specially selected independent agents which helps families and individuals looking to relocate to other areas of the UK, buy and sell property. The selection process is tough and by invitation only – making Mansbridge Balment’s latest selection as the

sole RAN agent in Plymouth for 2016 all the more impressive. Darren said: “RAN operates a highly selective entry criteria - including secret shopping – for those independent agents it invites to be part of its UK network,” said Darren. “We have been put through our paces yet again in terms of our quality of service, our depth and breadth of local knowledge and our commitment to the highest levels of customer engagement, but we have once again proved our mettle across the board. “We all take great pride in being the network’s designated agent in Plymouth and will continue to work hard to help their referrals relocate to our great city as smoothly as possible – as well as helping our mutual clients to sell their Plymouth homes prior to their relocation.” In terms of market developments, Darren said that the first two months of the year had been among the busiest on record, mainly prompted by the Stamp Duty changes which come into effect on April 1. Darren said: “Many property investors have been scrambling to finalise deals before the deadline and this has created a somewhat chaotic market. We have sold some properties twice or even three times since the beginning

of the year as the rush to invest has gathered pace, with some investors demonstrating less commitment to their chosen purchases and changing their minds. “This is in contrast to owner-occupier buyers whose purchase is an emotional, rather than a commercial decision. “We’re confident the market will cool down after April 1 and that first time buyers will see the benefit of the measures taken by the government to

discourage the property investors. “In the past first time buyers have found it difficult because of the advantage that property investors often have in terms of access to finance, but the Stamp Duty changes and other fiscal measures proposed could make the property market much less attractive for investors. “This is good news for people trying to get on the first rung of the property ladder and is good for the market as a whole,” he added.

Whether it’s a small space that would benefit from regular maintenance, a garden that could do with a bit of colour, a complete garden makeover or a commercial site that needs to look the part, Luke and his team at Man for all Seasons offer a service that’s second to none. For many of us, our gardens are like another room, somewhere to sit out and enjoy whenever the weather allows. So placing its care into someone else’s hands is a big decision. You need someone who’s fully trained, professional, reliable and friendly. With Luke you’ll get all of that and more, because he’s also big on the environment and sustainability. Luke is currently in his element because he loves this time of year: “Spring is here and there’s loads to do!” he says with relish. “A lot of people make the mistake of starting too late. If they haven’t been out in the garden since October then it’s time to get cracking.” Meeting him at his Lipson workshop and listening to him talk enthusiastically about the springtime ‘to do’ list for gardens, his passion for the job is obvious. And it’s a passion that’s always been there, ever since he helped his grandmother tend the pots in her courtyard at the age of seven. Eventually, he asked his parents if they could get an allotment: “I think I was about 13 at the time,” said Luke. “I’d helped at a friend’s allotment and I loved it so I asked my parents if they could get us one and they did. That was it. I was hooked. “Christmases were a bit different in our house. One year I got a garden shed for Christmas, another year I had money to get seeds and another year I was given money to buy some manure!” So it came as no surprise when Luke chose to do his work experience at the Eden Project before completing a two-year National Diploma course in Horticulture at Duchy College in Cornwall. Luke is currently back in the classroom on a part-time basis and

is about graduate with a Higher National Diploma in Garden and Landscape Design. His tutors, guest lecturers and course judges include gardening celebrities such as Matt James of Channel 4’s The City Gardener; Richard Sneesby; award winning designer Chris Beardshaw; editor of RHS’ The Garden, Chris Young; and Professor James Hitchmough, contributor to the Olympic Park planting. “It’s really good to learn from these sorts of people,” said Luke. “They’re at the top of their careers and they’re industryexperienced. I’ve been able to pick up lots of ideas that I can incorporate in our work with our customers. ” Luke started BEFORE Man for all Seasons in 2008 and has recently had a relaunch with fresh branding and a new website to showcase their services. It’s something of a family affair because he’s joined by his dad Mark as well as a dedicated apprentice gardener, Ryan, and office manager Sammy. The team has just started the 2016 lawn maintenance programme for regular customers. Luke says putting the effort in now will reap its rewards later in the year: “Ideally, lawn maintenance should begin in March and certainly needs to be started by the end of April. “We’ve had a very wet winter and the grass will probably need some care and attention before it can be cut. The ground will need to be aerated to help it to dry out and scarification will remove any moss or thatch. Then you can think about giving the lawn its first mow of the year.” Luke’s grass cutting and general garden maintenance rounds are

timed to suit customers so can be weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Luke can also advise on what and when to plant: “If you just want some colour for spring and summer then plant lots of herbaceous perennials. I like to mix those with some shrubs and evergreens so you’ve got something interesting happening all year round.” Luke has a particular passion for growing fruit and vegetables and is happy to show you how you can grow your own food: “There’s nothing more satisfying than eating food you’ve grown and it saves on your shopping bill. More and more people are keen to do this now but they don’t know how. Give me a call and let’s get it started.” When it comes to garden makeovers, Luke and his team can provide the whole AFTER package, from design and clearing to planting, landscaping and fencing. He also uses a qualified tree surgeon. Whatever look you’re after, Luke will deliver: “Contemporary gardens are very popular,” said Luke, “but traditional gardens are still popular too. We’re also getting a lot of work from people who’ve moved into new builds, where they just need a bit of help introducing some colour and individuality.” Visit the Man for all Seasons website or the Facebook page for more information or ring the office to book a free on-site consultation.

Established by local couple Mike and Pauline Hooper, it started off as a shop selling veg and soft fruit at Wearde Quay near Saltash. Until, one day, a customer asked for a particular plant. That sowed the seed! The switch in emphasis to plants saw the business expand so much that it had to move to its current site on the A388, just a bit further along from the turn-off to Waitrose. The garden centre, still owned by Mike and Pauline, now employs over 30 staff. If you pay them a visit right now, you’ll find them busying themselves with the new arrivals that will turn the huge plant area into a riot of colour in the coming weeks: “Everything’s starting to come in for the new season now,” said garden centre manager of 16 years, Anthea Ede. “It’s a real hive of activity.” The nursery has just doubled the size of the plant area; whatever plant you’re Staff member Kate Dolley looking for, you’ll probably find it here. And if you don’t know what you’re looking for, the staff will help you to choose the plants and trees that will best suit your garden: “All our staff are trained and they’re friendly, approachable and knowledgeable,” said Anthea. “You can ask us absolutely anything, even if you think it’s daft, and we’re very happy to help. We’re a gardeners’ garden centre because of the quality and range of our stock. But we also get a lot of enthusiastic gardeners and families who just need a little bit of guidance, and we can offer that. “Gardening shouldn’t be a niche thing where people feel intimated, it should be for everybody,” she added. “We get a lot of feedback from our customers that they like coming to us because our staff go the extra mile. Some people come in with a photo of their garden, a blank canvas, and we can walk them through the centre and point out what would work in that space.” So what’s good at this time of year? “Azaleas, rhododendrons, lavenders and acers are ready for planting now,” advised Anthea. “Roses have just come in, as well as clematis, honeysuckle and herbs. Fruit trees and seed potatoes are also ready to go in. This time last year, our plant area was a beautiful mix of colours and

now that it’s twice the size, it’s going to look amazing.” The centre supports other businesses in the region by using local suppliers wherever possible. While the plant area at the back of the centre is packed with ideas for floral and plant displays, inside the centre, there’s a ‘grow your own’ section which is proving increasingly popular with homeowners and families. And, for those dreaming of lazy sunny afternoons and BBQ evenings, there’s a large selection of garden furniture of all styles, sizes and budgets. Whichever garden furniture set you choose, you’ll be able to take it home on the same day: “Everything we have on display, we have in stock,” said shop manager, Dean Binley. “We’ll even deliver it for you and assemble it either in the shop or in your garden, depending on the access. Being independent enables us to offer this sort of flexible service.” That independence is another huge factor as to why so many customers choose to shop at Tamar View Nurseries rather than at the big DIY superstores and garden centres. As Anthea pointed out, people also enjoy the customer service experience. One of the team, Kate Dolley, says interacting with people as they plan their gardens is a great part of the job: “We really enjoy

helping people to find what they want and I think our customers appreciate the fact that they know they can approach us and we can offer them service with a smile on our face.” For those wanting to make a morning or an afternoon of it, the centre has a restaurant which includes a children’s menu, and there are sections selling house plants, indoor furniture, handmade gifts and nice things for the home. The shop is familyorientated, with ideas to encourage children to get involved in gardening and on how to introduce wildlife-friendly features. The centre even has some friendly wildlife of its own, Percy the peacock, who seems to have made the area at the back his home and is proving a big attraction for families. ART MATTERS

Simon Ripley (right) pictured with Prynne Chapel director Jeremy Johnson

New art classes launched in Plymouth’s Prynne Chapel

If art and printmaking is something you’ve always wanted to try, here is a great opportunity to to find out more. Two free introductory drop in sessions are on offer on Monday April 4 and Saturday April 16 at Plymouth's Prynne Chapel. Running 10am to 4pm everyone is welcome to pop in and see the facilities. I went to see for myself this new set up at Prynne Chapel. Hidden from view, behind a plain fronted house in Plymouth’s Wyndham Square is this remarkable 19th century Victorian Gothic chapel. Beautifully restored, the chapel is amazing not Art just for its secret location but for the fact that it is Matters now part of a fully equipped fine art printmaking workshop. with Prynne Chapel is soon to make its debut as Kerry Plymouth’s only centre where members of the public can begin to learn and appreciate the wonders of Cole printmaking. Most of us made a linocut at school or perhaps we understand the concept of screen printing or lithography. Maybe we are familiar with a friend’s etchings. These techniques and more will be on the Prynne Chapel curriculum - all ways of making handmade artists’ prints - not copies of paintings or other art works but original and unique in their own right. Prynne Chapel is excited to be entering into partnership with Exeter’s Double Elephant Print Workshop to deliver a range of new courses. Double Elephant is named after the old English paper size and with over 90 artist members and courses running round the clock, Double Elephant is a force to be reckoned with. Established in 1997 by two Plymouth University graduates, the studio also has an extensive outreach programme working across Devon. They run printmaking workshops in schools, hospitals, village

halls and even in Dartmoor Prison - reaching more than 3000 people of all ages every year. Printmaking is fun and easy to learn, it’s accessible to all and the workshop has many success stories of turning complete beginners into accomplished professional artists. Prynne Chapel director, Jeremy Johnson, said: “It’s great that we have been able to team up with Double Elephant who will bring their experience and expertise to this beautiful location for learning new skills in Plymouth." Simon Ripley, director and tutor at Double Elephant said: “We are thrilled to be able to offer printmaking in Plymouth - it’s a terrific way to get into a new art form, learn a new hobby or brush up on old skills. "Prynne Chapel is such a beautiful, contemplative space with a history of inspiring devotion. It will be a privilege to work here. There’s surely no similar space in the S.W or beyond for artists.” For those interested in signing up for one of the courses classes will be available on weekdays, weekends and evenings and will range from 10 week masterclasses to weekends looking at specific techniques such as wood cut or monoprint.

TRAVEL MATTERS

By Travel Expert

Anthony Goord

Good morning Vietnam... and Cambodia! This month’s article is written by my brother Victor, who is my business partner at Peter Goord Travel. To celebrate his 50th birthday he decided to travel to Vietnam and Cambodia on a luxury river cruise, I’m sure you’ll find it fascinating. Victor writes: "I’ve always considered myself pretty welltravelled, but I think it would be fair to say I’m not a great adventurer. I really wanted to do something a bit different and with some trepidation and much excitement Lisa and I, joined by our close friends Ian and Michelle, set off to cruise the Mekong River. OK, we weren’t exactly jumping into our canoes, but even so the thought of waking up and uttering the well-used announcement 'Good morning Vietnam!' seemed pretty exciting to me. The flight to Ho Chi Minh City from the UK is a long one and nothing can really prepare you for the culture shock of the bustle and rarefied humidity that greets you. We were glad to be met by a smiling CruiseCo representative who speedily got us on our way to our first stop, The Caravelle Hotel, in the centre of this sprawling city. Although the Vietnamese Government re-named Ho Chi Minh City in honour of a great leader, tourists and locals alike prefer the name Saigon. Our hotel was situated in a part of the town clearly kept sanitised to western tastes with many exclusive department stores and boutiques. Venture outside this area and you are struck by the vast size of the place and its population. We were told there are over six million motorcycles registered in Saigon alone and believe me that seems a conservative estimate. At each road junction you can look in either direction CruiseCo Adventurer

and just stare in wonder at the wall of traffic that confronts you. I can only compare it to the televised scenes of runners crossing the start line of the London Marathon. Incredibly the roads are very safe to cross and after a while you learn just to walk out slowly, but steadily, never stopping or running and simply allow the riders, often a family of four on one motorbike, to weave their way around you. Our hosts CruiseCo provide a comprehensive range of guided excursions within the holiday package so we were able to take in all Saigon’s essential sights during our brief stay. Your days are cleverly structured in a way that gives you plenty of time to explore on your own. The memory of sitting in a local restaurant each of us with a personal white-hot barbecue, cooking our own food, will live with me forever. After two hectic days we set off to join the CruiseCo Adventurer where we embarked on a week-long river cruise along the mighty Mekong River, along with 60 other passengers and about 30 crew. First impressions are good. The boat is well furnished, the cabins clean and spacious, but it is the warm and friendly welcome of the staff that 'seals the deal'. The all-inclusive food and drink provided is excellent and although the on-board entertainment is a little corny everything fits. The beauty of river cruising is that excursions never involve much road travel. You get up, have breakfast and you’re there enjoying the new surprises each stop has in store. There is a mixture of sightseeing and cultural visits and I feel on the whole the balance is about right. I really enjoyed the window into local people’s lives as we took in floating markets, monasteries and factories. Vietnam is a country where war dominates its history. As

GARDENING MATTERS

Growing your own fruit it’s fun and can be so re Now that spring is officially here it’s time to get out into the garden and start sprucing up the beds, borders and hanging baskets. Now is a great time to plant, as the threat of frost has passed. Get those young tender plants planted and give them a good solid start to the season and a long growing time. It is also time to start planting productive plants like fruits and vegetables. Growing your own fruit and veg is so rewarding, relatively easy and the crops taste far superior to anything bought at the supermarket.

Peas and beans

Fancy growing your own peas and beans? Well it couldn’t be any simpler, follow these step by step instructions and you can’t go wrong. You’ll be picking fresh peas and beans by midsummer and well into the autumn. What you will need: • Seeds of your chosen variety or pre grown seedlings. • A large deep pot, plastic, ceramic or wood, it doesn’t matter as long it’s a decent size. • Good quality compost. I recommend using Westland’s Multipurpose compost with added John Innes, or Jacks Magic. • Some fertiliser. Westland’s Chicken Manure pellets will be suitable. What to do: • Fill the pot with compost up to about 2.5cm or 1 inch from the rim and mix the fertiliser thoroughly with the compost. • Peas and broad beans can be sown direct into the compost, but broad beans will need starting on a sunny window sill or greenhouse. • Place eight or 10 seeds top of the compost and push them into the compost to the depth of 2.5cm or 1 inch. • When the seeds begin to shoot, firmly place bamboo canes into the compost near each shoot and tie the canes together at the top to form a wigwam. • When the shoots get to 15cm or 6 inches pinch out the tip to promote bushiness and side shoots. • Water the bag and keep it moist, but not water logged throughout the growing season. • Place the bag in a sunny position and enjoy your very own home grown peas and beans around late May. Keep picking to keep cropping.

Tomatoes Let’s grow a tomato in a pot. The joy of growing tomatoes is a simple one: the taste! Once you have grown your own tomatoes and tried them, you’ll never go back to shop bought ones. The question shouldn’t be how do I grow my own tomatoes, it should be why aren’t I growing my own tomatoes? They are by far the easiest fruit to grow! What you will need: • A tomato grow bag is great, but if you prefer to grow them in a pot they’ll do just as well. Preferably one 30cm (12ins) or more in diameter or even a hanging basket for the trailing varieties. • Good quality compost, unless growing in a grow bag. I recommend Westland’s Multipurpose with added John Innes or Miracle Gro Moisture Control compost. • Tomato plants. Choose a variety you like. My ‘go to’ variety and favourite is Sungold. It has cherry sized, sweet tasting, yellow fruit that produces a bumper crop throughout the summer. • A fertiliser. Tomato feed is perfect. What to do: • Prepare your pot by filling it 3/4 full with the compost. If using a grow bag, fluff it up like a pillow to loosen the compost. Lay it flat and cut three large squares in the plastic. • Plant the tomatoes, one to a pot or three to a grow bag. • If you are using a pot, back fill with compost to the level of the plants and leave a gap for watering. • Place in a sunny to partially shaded spot. • Water regularly and feed fortnightly with tomato feed.

Let’s grow herbs in a trough or pot. It is easy and rewarding. Your favourite dishes will taste 10 times better with the flavours and aroma of freshly cut herbs from your own crop. There is nothing quite like freshly picked parsley sprinkled over boiled potatoes and butter or a spring of mint with freshly picked strawberries and cream. You’ll wonder what took you so long to get started. What you will need: • A trough or pot with drainage holes. Terracotta is excellent for herbs. • Choose your herbs. Grow herbs that you will use regularly and for best results, grow herbs that have similar growing requirements. • Compost. I recommend John Innes No.2. • Mulch. Horticultural grit makes a great mulch for herbs. A half inch layer on the top of the pot keeps moisture in, weeds out and allows excess water to drain away. • Suitable fertiliser. Miracle Gro Slow Release feed is great for herbs. It slowly feeds for up to six months with one application. What to do: • Take your trough or pot and line the bottom of it with a layer or gravel or grit for drainage. • Fill 3/4 of the pot with John Innes No.2 compost. • Mix a handful of slow release fertiliser with the compost. • Mix a handful of grit with the compost for extra drainage if growing Mediterranean herbs. • Plant the herbs in the pot or the trough equal distance apart, so they have room to grow without crowding each other. • Fill the rest of the pot with the compost, leaving a 3.5cm (one and a half inch) gap from the rim. • Cover the surface of the compost with a 1.25cm (half inch) layer of horticultural grit, leaving a 2.5cm (one inch) gap from the rim for watering. • Water and enjoy. What herbs to grow together: • Chives, Parsley, Coriander, and Tarragon like full sun but moist soil. • Sage, Thyme, Rosemary and Oregano/Marjoram are Mediterranean herbs and like full sun and drier soils. • Mint is vigorous and fast growing, so for a bumper crop of mint grow it alone or with two other varieties in a pot if you like your mint fresh and tasty. Mint likes damp soil and partial shade. www.cornerstonevision.com
