The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life has placed the sorority Alpha Xi Delta on interim suspension following a “serious violation of the University Recognition Policy,” according to a University statement. The suspension was enacted on March 30. While the cause for the suspension was noted as a violation of the policy, the statement did not any provide further details. This suspension marks the first disciplinary action for a sorority this year. Three fraternities have been placed on suspension status earlier this semester, including Sigma Phi Epsilon, Lambda Chi Alpha and Pi Kappa Alpha.

This also marks the first interim suspension for a sorority since fall 2012, when Alpha Epsilon Phi was placed on suspension. That year, Alpha Epsilon Phi was placed on provisional recognition status for two years due to a violation of the anti-hazing policy. While on interim suspension, Alpha Xi Delta “may not engage in any activities other than operation of its residence,” according to the statement. The recognition status of the sorority will not change while on interim suspension. “Panhellenic does not comment on active cases but we have full confidence in OSFL as they do their fact finding,” said Panhellenic Council President Caitlin Gleason ’18. Gunshots Fired on Ithaca Commons; Victim Injured,Airlifted to Hospital By MEG GORDON Sun Staff Writer

JOAO SILVA / THE NEW YORK TIMES

In one of the largest protests in South Africa, tens of thousands demand the resignation of President Jacob Zuma on Friday in Johannesburg.

One man was injured after shots were fired on the Ithaca Commons on Sunday morning, police said. The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. in front of the bar Silky Jones. Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick ’09 announced via Facebook a few hours after the shooting that “thanks to incredible work by the Ithaca Police Department” the suspect was caught within 10 minutes of the shooting. The

suspect, identified Sunday evening as Yakez Cornett, is being charged with attempted murder, assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, according to Ithaca Police. The suspect allegedly shot several times into the crowd, injuring one man, a witness near the scene told The Sun. The witness said the injured man was taken away on a stretcher. The victim is in serious but stable condition, according to Myrick.

Police used yellow crime scene tape to close off a large portion of the Commons. Ithaca Police, New York State Police and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department were on the scene. The Ithaca Voice cited a witness saying a man fired a gun at another man after an argument before running away from the Commons. The victim was airlifted to a hospital, The Voice reported.
