President’s Letter

Dear Cor Jesu Community,

Cor Jesu’s theme for the school year is SHINE, and that’s exactly what CJ did during our Fall 2024 semester. This issue of Spirit will show you just some of the many ways that we have been shining! But before we go into that, I would like to take the time to thank YOU for helping us to SHINE! We can shine each day because of your love and support.

We are grateful for our alumnae; you have shown us how to shine and you continue to support us with your time, talent and treasure. This year, Cor Jesu shines especially brightly through the work of our talented and service-driven alumnae. Whether they are excelling in their careers or giving back to their communities, our alumnae are a true reflection of our mission and values.

We are also thrilled to highlight one of the most significant ways we are shining this year: the new Blessed Clelia Merloni Chapel. This sacred space is a beacon of light and hope for our community, offering a place for prayer, reflection and connection with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It stands as a testament to the generosity of our benefactors and the enduring faith of our CJ family.

In addition to these milestones, our first semester was filled with events that exemplify how we shine as a community. From the excitement of the first day of school to the joy and camaraderie of Spirit Week and the incredible generosity shown on Giving Tuesday, these moments brought us together and reminded us of the strength of our bonds.

Thank you for being such an integral part of our light. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus continue to shine through you. We keep you in our prayers and ask for blessings for each of you.

So, go ahead and SHINE with us!

Blessings,

Blessed Clelia Merloni Chapel

The new Blessed Clelia Merloni Chapel at Cor Jesu Academy is now open! This sacred space serves as a beautiful testament to our community's faith and devotion, providing a place for prayer, reflection and connection for generations to come.

The newly expanded Blessed Clelia Merloni Chapel at Cor Jesu Academy beautifully honors our traditions while embracing new elements of faith and devotion. One of the most beloved features preserved from the original chapel is the mosaic of Jesus and His Sacred Heart, a focal point of prayer for many generations of alumnae. The marble altar from the old chapel has also been lovingly retained. The base below the original altar has been ground and placed into the terrazzo floor, visible in the gray specks underfoot. Additionally, the Mother of Pearl, a hallmark of every Cor Jesu class ring, has been incorporated into the floor, as it has been in Clelian Hall and the Student Commons, connecting these spaces across our campus.

shines bright

A cherished feature from the original chapel, the mosaic of Jesus and His Sacred Heart, a focal point of prayer for many generations of alumnae.

Love, anchored in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, filled her with a zeal to share His message.

The gold accents in the mosaic Stations of the Cross are a special nod to the gold mosaic in the sanctuary of the chapel at the Apostles of the Sacred Heart Provincialate in Connecticut, symbolizing our enduring connection to Blessed Clelia’s legacy and the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. If you look at the main stained-glass windows, you will notice a ribbon of blue glass along the bottom, meant to look like a river. This water symbolizes the ocean the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus crossed in 1902 when they settled in the United States. Finally, the installation of glass doors at the chapel’s entrance on the first floor and the stained-glass window on the second floor overlooking the chapel ensures that all who pass through our halls are reminded that Christ is at the center of our school, guiding us in faith, hope and love.

The Blessed Clelia Merloni stained glass window, adapted from the painting by Giuseppe Antonio Lomuscio, was created and installed by Art Glass Unlimited. It is a celebration of Blessed Clelia Merloni, Foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. More than a tribute, it invites reflection on her charism and the central role education played in her mission to evangelize. The window portrays Blessed

Clelia during the founding years of the Congregation. Her serene expression and gentle gaze follow the viewer, reflecting the vitality of her deep love for Christ. This love, anchored in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, filled her with a zeal to share His message. At the heart of the composition are her hands. Her right hand holds the Crucifix close to her heart, both uniting with it and revealing it to others. Her left hand holds her teachings, symbolizing her role as a guide to those in her apostolate. This gesture mirrors the position of her hands in the glass that holds her sacred remains at the Institute’s Generalate, with one hand embracing Christ and the other offering herself in service.

The new chapel is not only a place for worship but also a cornerstone of our school’s mission to deepen the spiritual lives of our students, faculty

and alumnae. Designed with intention and care, the expanded space includes stunning modern updates that blend seamlessly with traditional elements, creating an environment of peace and reverence. The chapel’s design reflects our commitment to fostering a deeper connection to our faith and our shared community values.

On Sunday, November 24, 2024, we were blessed to celebrate the official opening of the Blessed Clelia Merloni Chapel with a beautiful liturgy. Archbishop Mitchell T. Rozanski led the celebration, and some beloved members of the Cor Jesu community joined us for this special occasion. The liturgy marked a moment of profound gratitude and joy as we gathered to dedicate this space to the Heart of Christ and to honor Blessed Clelia Merloni’s enduring legacy.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed their time, talent and treasure to bring this sacred space to life. From the architects and artisans who carefully crafted every detail, to the donors whose generosity made this vision possible, we are profoundly grateful. Your dedication and support have transformed the Blessed Clelia Merloni Chapel into a place where countless memories will be made and where Christ’s love will continue to shine brightly. As we move forward, we are excited to integrate the chapel into the daily life of Cor Jesu Academy. Whether through Eucharistic Adoration, private moments of prayer or weekly liturgies, the chapel stands as a beacon of faith and community. May Blessed Clelia Merloni inspire us all to continue living out Christ’s love in our hearts and in the world.

We are pleased to announce that we are offering a 7:15 Mass in the school chapel on Fridays that school is in session.

The exception will be on the First Friday of the month, when there’s an all-school Mass in the gym. This weekly tradition provides our students, faculty, staff and community with an opportunity to come together in prayer and start their day with Christ at the center.

Cor Jesu Kicks Off the School Year with Spirit

The first day of school at Cor Jesu Academy on August 14, 2024, was filled with excitement, tradition and Charger pride.

The day began with the senior class enthusiastically cheering and welcoming students. Dressed in their signature denim jackets and red and white, the seniors ensured every student felt at home from the moment they arrived.

One of the highlights of the morning was a special SkyFox flyover by Fox2 News, capturing an aerial view of the entire student body gathered on the soccer field, proudly decked out in their red and white. The display of Charger unity was broadcast live, sharing the energy of Cor Jesu’s first day with the greater St. Louis community.

More Than a Movement

Cor Jesu Alumnae Fight for Children Battling Cancer

AtCor Jesu Academy, students are not just encouraged to lead, they are empowered to make a difference. For three alumnae, Erin Drummond '20, Sofia Ortiz '21 and Sarah Robinson '22, this mission took on a deeply personal meaning as they dedicated themselves to fighting for children battling cancer. Together, they are the heart and soul behind Mizzou MoreThan4, an organization that raises awareness, advocates for legislative change and provides support for families enduring the unimaginable.

Members of Mizzou MoreThan4 celebrating after a successful Fall Semester of fundraising and raising awareness.

Some moments in life leave an indelible mark on the soul.

For Erin Drummond, that moment came in June 2014 when her three-year-old sister, Julia, and her eleven-year-old friend, Brett, were both diagnosed with cancer. The news shattered her world. “I was suddenly surrounded by kids my own age and younger who were suffering, fighting for their lives,” she recalls. While Julia survived, Brett did not. The pain of losing a friend so young was searing, and Erin’s family found themselves attending funeral after funeral of children who should still be here today.

“Even the kids who survive childhood cancer face a lifetime of side effects, some so debilitating they never get to truly live the life they fought so hard for,” Erin shares. “I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.” What began as a personal heartache grew into a

passion. Erin started advocating on her own before finding the courage to turn that passion into action. She founded MoreThan4 at Mizzou, determined to change the landscape of pediatric cancer treatment and awareness.

Starting an organization from scratch is daunting. But for Erin, it was fueled by an unrelenting need to honor the kids she had met along the way, those who had fought and those who had lost their fight. She recruited her friends, including fellow Cor Jesu alumnae Sofia and Sarah, to help bring her vision to life. “In the beginning, it was just a small group of us brainstorming ways to help,” Erin says. “But we had a fire inside of us, and that fire kept growing.”

The name MoreThan4 stems from the heartbreaking reality that childhood cancer research receives less than 4% of federal

cancer research funding. It was a number that haunted Erin.

“How can we tell these kids that their lives only matter 4%?” she asks. Determined to do more, MoreThan4 members have since helped double that percentage to nearly 8%. But as Sofia reminds us, “That’s still not enough. These kids deserve so much more.”

MoreThan4 is not just about awareness, it’s about action. Every year, members travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with lawmakers and push for critical changes in pediatric cancer funding. “Walking through the halls of Congress, knowing we were there for these kids, was overwhelming,” Sofia shares. “We told their stories. We handed legislators pictures of real children, children who should still be here. We made sure they couldn’t look away.”

Sarah was deeply moved by her first experience at Action Days, a two-day event where supporters advocate for important childhood cancer issues before Congress. She describes the weight of their mission, “It’s not just about numbers or policies, it’s about kids whose lives depend on these decisions. And when you see a mother’s eyes filled with both hope and exhaustion, you

From theology classes that emphasized social justice to extracurricular opportunities that reinforced the importance of community involvement, Cor Jesu provided the foundation that made MoreThan4 possible.

know you can’t stop fighting.”

Since its founding, MoreThan4 has grown beyond what Erin ever imagined. What started as a small student organization now has over 300 members at Mizzou, with plans to expand to SLU and beyond. The group has become an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit and continues to sponsor families in need, ensuring they don’t have to navigate their child’s illness alone.

One of their most moving initiatives was the Necessities Drive, where they collected items for a widowed mother struggling to care for her children during her son’s cancer treatments. “The response was overwhelming,” Sarah recalls. “People donated everything, from clothes to new pillows to gift cards for groceries. It was humanity at its best.”

Each of these three alumnae credits Cor Jesu for shaping their ability to lead and serve. Erin recalls a simple yet life-changing theology assignment in which she wrote to Congresswoman Ann Trousdale Wagner '80 about the

MoreThan4 movement. A year later, Wagner responded, saying she had been inspired to join the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus. “It was the first moment I realized that one voice really can make a difference,” Erin says. Sofia also found inspiration in her Cor Jesu science teacher, Mrs. Rita Ryan. “She always told us, ‘We are they.’ We are the ones who will fix the problems of the world,” Sofia remembers. “I took those words to heart.”

Beyond individual assignments and encouragement from teachers, the spirit of service that Cor Jesu instills in its students played a crucial role in shaping their advocacy. The school’s commitment to developing young women as compassionate leaders gave Erin, Sofia and Sarah the confidence to turn their passion into tangible change. From theology classes that emphasized social justice to extracurricular opportunities that reinforced the importance of community involvement, Cor Jesu provided the foundation

that made MoreThan4 possible.

“Cor Jesu not only prepared us academically but instilled in us the values of empathy, resilience and courage,” Sarah shares. “We were taught that our voices matter and that we have a responsibility to use them for good. MoreThan4 is a direct reflection of the lessons we learned at Cor Jesu.”

For those in the Cor Jesu community looking to help, there are many ways to get involved. Alumnae can start or join chapters at their universities. And everyone, no matter their age, can participate in blood drives, donate or simply spread awareness.

“We have seen firsthand how small actions can lead to incredible change,” Sarah says. “If you can even help one person, you’ve already made a difference.” For Erin, Sofia and Sarah, this is not just a cause, it’s a calling. It’s a promise to every child fighting cancer that they are seen, they are valued and they are more than 4%.

“We have seen firsthand how small actions can lead to incredible change.”

Breakfast with Santa Brings HolidayMagic to Cor Jesu

On Saturday, December 7, Cor Jesu Academy welcomed alumnae and their families to campus for our annual Breakfast with Santa event.

From writing letters to Santa and mixing up reindeer food to decorating Christmas cookies, there was no shortage of magical activities for visitors of all ages. Some chose the quiet allure of Christmas stories in the library, while others enjoyed the delightful Christmas play performed by CJA’s talented drama students. Everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by Flynn’s Foods.

The Cor Jesu Chamber Choir filled the air with the sounds of Christmas carols, and the school's "elves" kept young guests entertained with face painting, ornament decorating and lively holiday games. The Christmas spirit was brought to life with visits from Santa Claus, Bolt and even the Grinch, creating moments of joy and laughter for all.

Ms. Thoopul is truly one of a kind. She’s not only an incredible teacher who effortlessly balances so many responsibilities, but she also has a special way of sharing her "wisdom nuggets," little tips and tricks that make life as a high school student just a bit easier. The best way I can describe her is as a mother figure. Whether in the classroom or beyond, she instills discipline, offers honest guidance and leads by example. I admire her so much.

— EMILY TRAN '26

Dr. Cowan embodies quiet leadership. She juggles so many roles like teaching, PQ and StuCo, yet much of her impact happens behind the scenes. She’s been such a positive force in my life, always making us laugh and helping us focus on the good. As a teacher, she’s just as incredible. Her ACP Novels class has been my favorite in high school, it changed how I think and write. Cor Jesu truly wouldn’t be the same without her. She really can do it all.

Welcome Aboard

From September 16-20, 2024, Cor Jesu

Academy students, faculty and staff buckled up and prepared for takeoff as Spirit Week 2024 soared to new heights with the theme "Welcome Aboard, CJ!" Each day featured a different travel-themed dressup day and a lineup of exciting activities that made for an unforgettable journey.

Monday: Suit Up!

Spirit Week started strong as students dressed as the professionals who keep us moving! From pilots and flight attendants, to taxi drivers and train conductors, the Chargers were ready for departure.

Tuesday: Choose Your Destination

Whether students were hitting the slopes, lounging on the beach or trekking through the mountains, Tuesday’s dress theme let everyone embrace their favorite vacation vibes.

Wednesday: On the Map

CJ’s campus became a global hub as students dressed in outfits inspired by famous cities around the world. From "I ♥ NY" shirts to berets representing Paris, the CJ community showed off their international flair.

Thursday: Roadtrip!

Comfort was key on Thursday as students embraced the spirit of a classic road trip, wearing their coziest travel clothes.

Friday: Cor Jesu Spirit Day & Student Council Barbecue

The week culminated in a sea of red and white as the entire school came together for CJ Spirit Day.

WHY: All gifts brought in by CJA alumnae go directly to the Cor Jesu Charger Fund, supporting tuition assistance.

HOW: Only gifts during the 3-day event count towards the total. You can give via Venmo @CorJesu-Academy, or at corjesu.org/gsu.

It’s time to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 7, 2025, as we welcome back all Cor Jesu classes ending in ‘0 and ‘5 for a special reunion. Whether it’s been five years or fifty, we can’t wait to gather and share the memories that make CJA so special.
