SCAD Interior Design

HELLO!

Spirited color, innovative sustainability, and exacting detail are unlikely elements to find combined in just one design. My work is able to fuse them because I as a person am a fusion.

My passion has been the leading thing driving me through life. My passion started to emerge when I was a young girl playing national-level ice hockey. Every day I practiced precision, driving myself to be the best. By my teen years, I realized my creative brain was hungry. I immersed myself in theater, finding costume and set design as rewarding as acting itself. When that wasn’t enough to satisfy me, I chose to take leadership positions in the theater. It hoped to inspire others to pursue their passion just as I did. I drove myself to prepare for college auditions, constantly looking for ways to better myself. This was when I signed up for an interior design camp, changing my life forever.

I never realized that the entire mood of a space could change based on a few decisions. I began to wonder if that was why I found it so hard to focus in some environments. Was there a way to design a space where everyone could be content and productive? I fell in love with how I could fuse my creativity, attention to detail, and deep desire to help others into a space that could touch a person’s mind.

At SCAD, I have broadened to see the wide range of ways I can help people through design. I want to allow people to work more efficiently, with better focus, and at their happiest in spaces created to help. I want to promote diversity, designing spaces that welcome everyone. I hope to continue to show the passion that I feel deep within every design I create. Most importantly, I long to emphasize sustainability and use design to help- in small and large ways- make the planet healthier.

My passion is to create work that fuses color, function, sustainability, and joy. I hope you enjoy the designs that passion has created.

Cultivating Growth

Cova Coworking and Childcare

In historic Savannah, Cova Cowork’s new location creates a nurturing place for all who enter. Cova’s interior uses WELL standards and biophilic design to create a focused and productive environment. The space allows for people to work in the way that matches them best.

Inspired by nature, the design takes after the dynamic and organic shapes found in nature to originate a space that helps users grow. The natural design and calm feeling throughout the space permits people to communicate and concentrate in similar spaces. The environment created is meant to nourish children and adults alike, creating an alleviating space that allows for creativity to germinate and flourish.

The Reception area starts off patrons’ journeys into the relaxing space. The ADA reception desk creates a wayfinding method for children to be directed into the childcare area so parents can get to work.

The Majestic Oak is the largest live oak in Savannah. The Majestic Oak grows towards the sourthern light. Trees are much like the parents and other patrons of Cova Cowork. They are constantly growing and nurturing those around them. Creating a space that embodies these traits is imperative.

SCAD’s Clark Hall is the location for this project. It is the largest existant railroad depot in the U.S. It was listed in 1976 on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark.

The Break Room is a custom reclaimed wood feature made to make people feel as if they are inside of a tree.

[ Helping them GROW ]

This Childcare space allows for children to be safely taken care of in a space that allows them to explore.

One of the main features is a seating area created by the reclaimed wood slate wall. This wall allows for parents to see the whole space, while seperating the sleeping spaces from the noisy play space.

The Break Room and Large Conference Room lie in the more quiet workspace area. Cova Cowork allows a number of private spaces to be rented.

The Large Conference Room is made for meetings held in the space. The glass, like the office spaces, becomes frosted if privacy is needed.

Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel

Right on the beach in the Oceanfront district, the Moxy is a hotel that allows Fun Hunters to experience a space made for them to play and relax. Moxy’s interior uses human-centered design to give the diverse people visiting the Moxy the same feeling of fun and ease. The space creates a community that looks to connect and frolic in the playfulness of the interior.

As the sun comes up, reflections from the waves enter through the windows at the Moxy. This new location captures the movement and colors of that light, informing the design of the lobby, coffee bar, and ADA guest suite of the Moxy.

[ Check In and HANG OUT ]

The bar and check-in are merged together, allowing Fun Hunters to integrate with the lively environment as they come in. The ADA counter allows people of all abilities to feel welcomed. The reflective surfaces and glass play with light.

Sunrise Reflections

The reflections of the sunrise on the waves crashing onto Virginia Beach guide the playful design of the Moxy Hotel. The majority of the rooms at the Moxy face the eastern sun as it cascades over the tide and into their rooms. Focusing on the dynamic, pulsating light from the consistently moving waves, the interior architectural elements convey the intermingling of light and movement in the space. Bold colors and organic lines will be utilized throughout the space.

Summer Rayne Oakes’ Vacation House

[ Skills Used ] Photoshop, Sketchup, InDesign, Illustrator, Hand Rendering

[ Materials ] Pen, Markers, Colored Pencils

This vacation house in the marshes of Florida finds inspiration in the adaptive nature of Peperomia plants. The space merges the outdoors with the indoors, creating a design that promotes the preservation of the natural world. Biophilic design and sustainable thinking originate a space that speaks to the nature outside and the people inside.

The goal of the vacation home is to meet the needs and interests of Summer Rayne Oakes while creating an intimate space for friends and family. The space can adapt to the needs of the family, just like the Peperomia plant can adapt to the environment around it.

Summer Rayne Oakes, 36, is an author, entrepreneur, and the world’s first eco-model. Summer Rayne Oakes got her degree in environmental science and entomology at Cornell University. She is an environmental activist and an eco-model; a model who only promotes clothes made from organic and recycled materials. Oakes made Le Souk which connects fashion designers to environmentally friendly fabric producers. She has written multiple books and makes YouTube videos that promote a healthy and plant-filled lifestyle.

Seamless Adaptation

The concept behind Summer Rayne Oakes’ vacation home is based on Oakes’ favorite genus of plant, Peperomia, and sustainable practices that Oakes uses in her everyday life. Oakes wants a home that feels alive and where she can muse about nature. Peperomias are found in harsh conditions but can be grown almost anywhere. Certain peperomia can go without water for 70 days yet plump up an hour after watering. Oakes believes, like Peperomia, we must adapt and advance to save the planet we live on. Oakes’ vacation home will behave like a Peperomia, adapting to different functions, new sustainable methods, and to the area surrounding it.

Workspace

[ Year ] 2021

[ Skills Used ] Modeling, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator

[ Materials Used ] Acrylic, Holographic Vinyl, String

This workspace found in Savannah, GA asks the guest to dance in its fantasy and mystery. The digital artist Loish’s art informs the design of the conceptual workspace and retail space. This space welcomes patrons to come and explore the alluring spaces within.

Loish’s artwork informs the layout, directionality, and user experience of the space. Utilizing a grid system, a two-floor space was created to reflect Loish. The curving nature of the art clashes with the strict lines used on the grid. The warping and reflection of light calls for people to join Loish’s dance.

[ Project Description ]

Multiple organizational and spatial models were tested to understand the relationship between Loish’s artwork and space. In the end, the linear, centralized, and radial grids matched the central and alluring nature of Loish’s art.

The initial model was created with the idea to lure in guests, just like Loish’s artwork. The model is linear with emphasis on the mystery from one floor to another.

The mystery of the space is kept as users enter through a small corridor.

Holographic vinyl is used to manipulate light and color throughout the space.

Centralized spaces lead to other smaller spaces where Loish’s artwork is sold.

Circular cutouts allow light to flow into the space in interesting shapes.

Partitions of string and dowels play with shadows.

The acrylic exterior is not transparent, yet allows guests to see a bit inside.
