Cora Clark

About Me:

Hi! My name is Cora Clark and I have just completed my sophmore year in Interior Design at Virginia Tech. I have a passion for design in many forms. Since I was little, I have imagined and reimagined the many spaces and places I’ve visited. I enjoy working with others, being collaborative on projects, and value hearing feedback and new ideas.

When I’m not in studio, I volunteer (in various ways) at Virginia Tech where I enjoy holding a leadership position and I’m proud of the contributions I’ve made to the community. I love to cook and bake as well as be outdoors.

01 Artist Atlier

Programs used: Sketchup, Enscape, Photoshop

Artist Atlier was a project using the fundamentals of Heirarchy, Organization, Proportion, Movement, Progression, Transition, Permeation, Aperature, and Threshold to successfully create an interior environment for the client. Designing an atlier, living space, and a small exhibit area, we were able to imagine our own client; coming up with their profession, background, hobbies, location, etc.

Client Bio:

Miss Ellie May is a 60 year old lampworker, which is scaled rado. Ellie was born and raised in Houston, Texas and moved start her life. Ellie picked up lampworking as a hobby and and sells her amazing creations out of her home. As Miss that hasn’t stopped her from doing what she loves!

scaled down glass blowing. She lives in Palisade, Colomoved to Colorado at 25 to become independent and and it has now become her full time job. She works on Ellie has gotten older she has developed arthritis, but

Concept:

Living in the mountains Miss Ellie loves nature. She loves to go on hikes and be outdoors. Because of this I used some colors you might see on hiking trails in Colorado, earrthy tones, while also keeping it colorful to tie in with her glass creations. Large windows were used to let lots of light in and also reflect off of all the colorful glass in her home. The ceilings are all very high just like the mountains she loves to hike in Colorado. The design is one floor so she can grow old in her home and not have to worry about stairs or any other challenges. There are minimal doors needed to open and close so she can move through the space easily.

Organizational Concept:

Ellie wanted an open concept while also having some privacy in her living area and total privacy in her bedroom and bathroom. The exhibit space leads into the studio space with a transparent wall so guests can see into her work space. From the studio you travel into the living room/ kitchen. There is a divider wall that is made out of stained glass, nodding to her work with glass, and love for the mountains. It is somewhat open but also closed to give her a sense of privacy. Next, in the back of the house is her bedroom and bathroom which has total privacy.

02 YMCA Remodel Programs used: Sketchup, Enscape Photoshop

Our second year studio was tasked with redisgning the YMCA in Blacksburg, Virginia. The space they have currently is used as a thrift shop/community center with a pottery studio and a classroom used for after school programs. Our task was to redesign the space and include a commercial kitchen with teaching kitchenettes, walk in refridgerator and freezers, dry storage area, and access to the alley. Additonally, we were tasked with creating an international welcome center and a way to minimize the dust mess that is produced from the pottery studio. We were put into groups of 2-3 and had to accomplish this while staying under 3,000 square feet.

Concept

The goal for our renovation of the Blacksburg YMCA is to design a space where community can come together and thrive. The Blacksburg area has people from all over the world, and it was very important to create a space where everyone would feel welcomed, feel safe, and get access to resoures or help that they need. Our concept was to make this space feel fun and welcoming by having a sense of movement and flow throughout the space. The curves and linear progression in this space are representative of the different paths people could take from different places around the world to get to Blacksburg. Colors used in this space were pulled from the surrounding environment to convey and reflect the community of

03 Retail Design Programs used: Sketchup, Enscape Photoshop

The project prompt was to design a retail space with items that are tangible. We were given three floor plans to choose from. Each floor plan was situated on the corner of a street. Within the retail space we were required to have a mezanine level, fitting rooms, ADA restroom, elevator, office, storage space, seating, and displays that reflect our concept and what our retail store was selling. Additionally, we were required to include a design feature, either on the ceiling, floors, or walls. This project challenged us to consider materiality while designing our spaces, and required a material palette with our final poster.

SOAR is an adventure store located in Alburquerque, New Mexico. One of the many things Alburquerque is known for is their hot air balloon festival. Hot air balloons are an outlet for adventure, exploration, and curiosity. Basing SOAR off of the concept of hot air balloons, the retail store has a sense of endless adventure; keeping curves and roundness throughout the space to represent flow as well as the shape of a hot air balloon. The organization of the store is easy to understand and has a distinct path of travel to it. The store is made of many neutral and natural textures with pops of color throughout the decoration, displays, and materiality.
