OBITUARY Nellee Byers Nellee Byers passed away on May 7, 2016. Nellee was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on April 20, 1936. She moved to Arizona in 1970 and called this place home. Nellee loved the Arizona desert with its beautiful mountains, always mentioning the flowers on the cactus. She loved her birds which frequented outside her window. Her favorite companion, though, was her Kitty Sweetie Pie. She was always amazed at the beautiful sunrise, but her favorites were the sunsets and taking drives to find the best spot to view. Nellee was also known for her beautiful voice, playing, and teaching the guitar. She loved singing “Crazy” by Patsy Cline and many others.

Steak Fry, Auction a Great Success

T

he Rotary Club steak fry, benefit auction, and evening of music brought many people to the General Kearny Inn this last Saturday night. The steaks were extremely tender and juicy, the hot dogs and hamburgers were great and the auction, as might be expected, included a set of bicycles, three computers, an air compressor, art by local artists, and wonderful items contributed from our local businesses and some from outof-town as well. There was everything including a kitchen sink!

The bidding was supervised by auctioneer Bill Dunn, who has a way of reaching into peoples’ pockets with his clever banter. The auction raised more than $3,500. Thank you to everyone who donated items, bought items, cooked the food, served the food, and ate the food. The money raised support the Kearny town swimming pool and its summer operation. There were also special gifts from Misita Enterprises and Jay Wernett, which provided $600 for 10 family pool passes distributed on Saturday night. This is the

kind of support which binds a community together. The pool will open Monday, May 30. The pool has been thoroughly renovated with a new surface and set of pumps. The pool has also been made ADA compliant with new features. The kiddie pool is still not in service (the focus was on getting the large pool ready), but its repair is the next thing on the list. More information on these things will be forthcoming. So much is taking place these days. Harry Grizzle, the Deputy Chief for Law Enforcement in the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, is our new volunteer Interim Chief of Police for Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman, and Mammoth. He will be with us for three months, or until the time we

decide whether or not to have a regional police force for the towns. Chief Grizzle “worked his way up” by serving in almost every department of the Sheriff’s Office. His experience will truly benefit us. Thanks to the people who have given me compliments for writing this column. I want it to be helpful to everyone. Former Kearny teacher sentenced to more than 100 years in prison on multiple child sex counts Former Kearny teacher, Louis Elvira, was sentenced to 112 years in the Department of Corrections after his recent conviction on nine counts relating to the molestation of a child. In March, a Pinal County jury found the 58-year old Kearny man guilty on all counts, including two counts of sexual conduct with a minor, child molestation, five counts of sexual exploitation, and one count of public sexual indecency. Back in 2011, the defendant inappropriately touched a 6-year-old child and then made the child perform a sexual act on him. A month later, a friend discovered a laptop belonging to the defendant with images of child pornography. Kearny Police confiscated the computer as part of their investigation and discovered multiple images of children under 15-years-old on the laptop. After the child reported the incident, the defendant quit his job with the school and fled the state. Kearny Police caught up to him in Indiana and had him extradited back to Pinal County. “Because we have such a high conviction rate, we have now decreased the sex offender per capita ratio to the absolute lowest in the state. The next highest county is

now more than 300% higher in sex offenders per capita than Pinal County making Pinal the absolute safest in the state for our children. It is incomprehensible that this man forced a child to do what he did and then fled the state. I

would like to thank our local law enforcement officers and those in Indiana who assisted with this case and brought the defendant back to Arizona to face his charges. A jury of his peers convicted him thanks to the courageous actions of a child who reported his criminal behavior to authorities,” said Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles.

wherever you are

Natural gas lines can be buried anywhere. So it’s important to know how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak...no matter where you are.

A leak may be present if you: SMELL: An odor similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or momentary. HEAR: A hissing or roaring sound coming from the ground, aboveground piping, or gas appliance. SEE: Dirt or water blowing into the air, unexplained dead or dying grass or vegetation, or standing water continuously bubbling. lf you suspect a leak: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Leave the area immediately. From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 1-877-860-6020, day or night, whether you’re a customer or not. A Southwest Gas representative will be there as soon as possible. Don’t smoke or use matches or lighters. Don’t turn on or off any electrical switches, thermostats, or appliance controls; or do anything that could cause a spark. Don’t start or stop an engine, or use automated doors.

For more information about natural gas safety, visit swgas.com/safety or call 1-877-860-6020.

Beware of scam calls regarding taxes FLORENCE -- Pinal County Treasurer Dodie Doolittle said her office has received calls regarding a tax scam targeting some local residents. “Our office has been contacted by residents saying they have received messages from a person claiming to be with the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration,” Treasurer Doolittle stated. “They are told that their address is under Federal investigation. I am forwarding on a statement from the Office of the Inspector General regarding this scam and how to report if you receive a call from these scammers.” From the Office of Inspector General: There are numerous telephone and email scams in which individuals claim to be employees of the Treasury Department. These scammers often state that they are from the “Department of Legal Affairs,” offer grant money in exchange for you wiring a small payment, or threaten to arrest you within a short period of time unless payment is made. Do not provide personal information or payment to these individuals. Their

actions are crimes under Titles 18 and 31 of the United States Code, and the Treasury Office of Inspector General is working to stop them. If you have received a call or an email that you suspect is fraudulent, report it to OIGCounsel@oig.treas.gov with a description of the communication. If the call or email contained claims related to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or taxes, you must report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at http://1.usa.gov/1Xuggrj or 1-800-366-4484. When reporting a suspicious call, telephone carriers require that you provide the exact date and time that you received the call(s) and the geographic location and time zone where you received the call. For example: “I received a suspicious call from telephone number XXX-XXX-XXX to my home phone in Tallahassee, Florida (Eastern Time Zone) on October 23, 2015 at 9:23AM claiming that there is a legal action against me from the Treasury Department of Legal Affairs.”
