Brandee Lienn Espinoza, 29, passed away May 27, 2019 at Banner Desert Medical Center. She was born on Jan. 6, 1990 in Chandler, AZ. She was the daughter of John “Mike” Espinoza and Rosalie “Michelle” Leon. Brandee received her high school diploma from Desert Winds in Casa Grande and graduated from Le Cordon Bleu culinary arts school in Scottsdale. Brandee loved spending time with her son. She enjoyed cooking, camping, fishing, playing softball, and sitting on a porch with family. Brandee will be remembered for her big heart. She always had a huge sense of humor and the best time playing practical jokes. She loved
her son very deeply. She will truly be missed. She is survived by her son, Gavin Brody Aguilar; parents, John “Mike” (Patty Ann) Espinoza and Rosalie “Michelle” (Roy) Leon; siblings, Amanda Espinoza, John “Mikey” Espinoza, Roy “Lolo” Leon, Nathan Espinoza, Gabriel Espinoza, and Anthony Espinoza; grandparents, John B. Jerry ‘Bug’ Farris
On May 20, 2019, at the age of 59, Jerry “Bug” Farris peacefully passed away after a long battle with illness. Jerry was born on Nov. 17, 1959 in Ray, Arizona to Ellis and Patsy Farris. He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest brother, Dennis Farris. He is survived by his brother, Jeff, and sister-in-law, Brenda, of Queen Creek, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Leonor “Noni” Marquez passed in peace on May 26, 2019 at the age of 65. Leonor was born to Dalia and Manuel Marquez on March 11, 1954 in Ray, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her father, Manuel “Cholla”

I
Tariffs on Mexico will harm Pinal County
n just the past month, we have seen some impressive articles about our grand county: “Pinal County prepares for influx of thousands of new jobs” “Pinal County on the road to becoming an automotive manufacturing juggernaut” “Pinal County solar project picks up tech, retail, mining and government customers” “Pinal County has some economic lessons for Gila County” On Friday we learned that one person can throw that all away. I’m speaking of our President.
On Friday, President Trump announced that he will enact tariffs on Mexico in order to punish them for the influx of illegal immigration. First of all, the only people who will be hurt by these tariffs will be you and me by spending more on fruits and vegetables. Next, there are a lot of large projects slated to come to Pinal County in the next year such as Lucid Motors and Nikola Motors that depend upon favorable trade with Mexico. Our proximity to our neighbors to the south is one of the reasons they chose Pinal County for their multi-billion dollar enterprises that will also supply our residents with high paying jobs. Like a bad target shooter, the President is going to be
Arizona Fire Fighters caution public: fraudulent fundraising phone calls happening statewide PHOENIX – The Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona, the state’s largest fire fighters’ organization, has issued a warning to Arizona consumers: Beware of telephone solicitors pretending to raise money for fire fighters’ charities. “These scam phone calls happen frequently and recently we have had reports of an uptick in fake charity solicitations,” said Bryan Jeffries, the president of the PFFA. “No reputable fire fighters organization in the state is using phone solicitors to raise money. If you get a phone call asking for a donation on behalf of an Arizona fire fighters’ group, it’s a fraud.” Consumers who get such calls are encouraged to take notes of the content of the call and the caller’s phone number, then contact the Arizona Attorney General’s Office either by phone or online. Consumer complaints can be filed at https://www.azag.gov/ complaints/consumer. Recent fake calls have included solicitors
reportedly citing a group known as the “Fire Fighter Support Association.” According to Jeffries: “To my knowledge, that group has done nothing to support fire fighters in Arizona, nor do they have any affiliation with
our organizations either at the state or local level. Every dollar donated to a fake group like this is a dollar siphoned away from legitimate charitable causes. That’s an absolute shame.” The PFFA represents

hitting Americans (particularly Pinal County residents) hard by this tariff, meanwhile Mexico will feel little, if no effect. In the end, there will still be illegal immigration. Even the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Senators Sinema and McSally are against this bad idea. If Pinal County’s Economic Development engine is stopped by these tariffs and other actions of the President, I can guarantee you it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible to get it started again. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to become a major player in the international markets, but with the swoop of one signature, we can see that go away forever. Superior football head coach Ryan Palmer earned more recognition after he was selected the 1-3A Coach of the Year at the inaugural Arizona Interscholastic Association Champions Luncheon, which took place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on May 17. Palmer, who was selected the 1A Conference Coach of the Year and 1A East Region Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to the 2018 1A State Championship, was selected for this award from a large group of coaching candidates in three conferences, encompassing all sports. “I (am) humbled and truly honored to be recognized for such a prestigious award,” Palmer told the Superior Sun. “This is not a personal award, but rather recognition of collective success from the collaborative efforts of so many others. It takes a village to have sustained success, and we certainly have a good one in Superior.” Last season’s football championship was Superior’s first in 64 years. Palmer has been the Panthers head coach for the last 11 seasons, compiling a record of 69-37, including 38-4 the last four years. Palmer was 23 years old when he started teaching and coaching. His entire career
as an educator has been at Superior Jr/Sr High School, where he taught “seventhgrade Social Studies to AP Government” and much more in between. Ending a 64-year old title drought is significant to Palmer, but he’s always knew his primary job had greater significance. “My passion has always been to help kids succeed; on the playing field, in the classroom, and most importantly, in life,” he said. Palmer is thankful for the Superior administration that has supported him, especially Superintendent Steve Estatico and Principal and Athletic Director Billy Duarte, for the incredible support they give to all our athletic programs. He also recognized the sacrifices and hard work of his assistant coaches and the “amazing” student athletes of Superior High School. “I am so proud of all of them and grateful to have shared so many great experiences,” he said. “I also want to also thank the parents of the student-athletes, the Superior Jr/Sr High School faculty and staff, and the entire community of Superior for the awesome support they give to the athletic programs. “I am so fortunate to have a family that allows me to spend as much time as I do pursuing my passion,” he continued. “Thank you to my wife Megan, and to my entire family for all the love and support

Palmer named AIA Coach of the Year they not only show me, but also the teams I coach.” Winning the state championship last season was particularly special for Palmer and his family. His parents, who live in Michigan, “have always been some of the biggest supporters and fans of the teams I have played on and coached, over the years.” They constantly followed the teams he coached and came to as many games as they could. Just over two years ago his father – Mike – was diagnosed with cancer. This past winter, after a difficult, but courageous battle, he passed away. The day he passed,
peacefully, surrounded by family, he was wearing a Superior Football State Championship t-shirt. “I will be forever grateful to all the players, coaches, and to everyone that worked so hard to collectively accomplish a goal that I have spent my entire playing and coaching career chasing, and that my father was able to see the Panthers do it,” Palmer said. “I would like to dedicate the award in memory of my father, whose work ethic and morals I try my best to emulate.” No doubt, Coach Palmer is the Coach of the Year every year in the eyes of some.

Summer Reading Program at the Superior Public Library to introduce young readers to a ‘Universe of Stories’
Readers of all ages will explore all things space this summer as the Superior Public Library presents “A Universe of Stories” during its summer library program. Activities include a visit from magician, John Fitz Simmons, crafts, games, stories and so much reading. Registration for Summer Reading Program began June 3 and continues to June 14 at the Superior Public Library. Parents/Guardians can come to the library and register their child. At that time the child will receive a Reading Log to keep track of all books checked out and read. Each time they come and return books they must bring their Reading Log so we can stamp it. They must return filled out Reading Logs on the last day of the program which is July 16. The program is geared for children in grades Kindergarten to sixth, but teens and adults are welcome to participate also. The kick-off event will be held on June 26 at 10 a.m. with magician John Fitz Simmons and his Epic Magic Show at the library. Activity Days will be: July 2 – Crafts, games, stories. July 9 – Crafts, games, stories. July 16 – Crafts, games, stories. Refreshments and prizes will be awarded to participants. Kids must return Reading Logs on July 16 to be eligible for prizes.
