Superior hires Frank Alanis as police chief The Superior Town Council voted unanimously on Thursday to approve an employment contract with Francisco “Frank” Alanis as the Chief of Police pending the completion of a background check. Alanis will be starting on June 1. He will be leaving the Casa Grande Police Department where he has earned the rank of Lieutenant. The Town of Superior conducted an extensive search and conducted a lengthy interview process which included two rounds of interviews and a community meet and greet with the candidate finalists. Vice Mayor Michael Alonzo who serves as the chair for the Town of Superior Emergency Services Committee led in the search efforts and conducting the process. The Town used a private firm along with assistance from the Pinal County Sheriffs office. In the March 27 edition of the Superior

Sun, it was reported that the Council originally made an offer to former interim Chief Christian Ensley, pending a background check and contract negotiation. Minutes from the April 11 regularly scheduled Council meeting, the Council returned from an executive session and voted unanimously to rescind the offer to former Interim Chief Christian Ensley and enter into contract negotiations with the second finalist Frank Alanis. Ensley was appointed the interim Chief of Police in March 2018 when the council voted not to renew an employment contract with former Chief David Neuss. The Town of Superior started its Chief of Police selection process in December 2018. During the transition, Sgt. Mark Shackelford was appointed to serve as the Interim Chief of Police during the April Council meeting.

Obituaries are published free of charge in the Superior Sun. If you have an obituary you would like us to print, submit it online at copperarea.com, click on “Customer Service.” You can also request our newspaper through the mortuary or funeral home.

Vice Mayor Michael Alonzo introduces the new chief, Frank Alanis, to the public and staff. Alanis is excited to start this next phase of his career an is looking forward to serving in Superior.

It’s rarely well-received by at least one team when a game is decided on call by an umpire or referee, especially a questionable one, and such was the case in last Friday’s 1A state semifinal between No. 4 Superior and top-ranked Bagdad at the Goodyear Baseball Complex. Superior was “that” team following a 4 – 3 loss. After battling back with a three-run third inning to erase a 2 – 0 Bagdad lead, Superior was on the wrong end of a call at first base in the bottom of the sixth that would’ve been the third out of the inning. Instead, the winning run was scored on the play after the umpire

called the Sultans’ hitter safe at first. “(Bagdad) scored on a ‘safe’ call at first because the umpire said my first baseman pulled his foot [off the bag], when he didn’t,” Superior head coach Manuel Ortega told the Superior Sun. “It was a huge call that would’ve got us out of the inning.” The disputed call didn’t get the Panthers out of the inning, but as it turned out did have a part of knocking them out of the playoffs and a berth in Monday night’s title game, in which No. 2 Mogollon defeated Bagdad, 6 – 2. After trailing 2 – 0 entering their half of the third inning, the Panthers scored three runs on an RBI-double by senior Jesus Castellanos and run-scoring hit Continued on page 5

by sophomore Adam Navarrette. Junior Gabe Otero, who went 2-for-4 in the game, scored the third run of the inning on a passed ball. The Sultans immediately answered, scoring a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game before one of the game’s most memorable plays was unfortunately made by an umpire, not a player. The Panthers, certainly disappointed in the result afterwards, still see their championship window open for the next couple of years, at least. The Panthers’ seniors won a baseball title in 2017 and a football championship in November. The bar is high for the returning players in both sports. “We came out short of our goal,” Ortega said. “The boys played their hearts out and that’s all I could ask for. “These seniors had great careers here,” he added. “They gave it their all and are walking away with two rings. A third one would’ve been even sweeter. We have work to do, but we believe we can be in the running [for a state championship] again, but we have to put in the work.” There’s no question about that.

Superior Optimist Club awards eight laptop computers

The Superior Optimist Club hosted its annual Honor Roll Banquet last week. The banquet is a long time community tradition which recognizes the students in grades eight through 12 for earning the honor roll the first three academic quarters of each year. The event includes a banquet and keynote address by an alumni of Superior High School. Kristin Arroyos, SHS Class of 2010, spoke to the students about her experience graduating from Superior

High School and then attending Grand Canyon University where she graduated as Magna Cum Laude in 2014. She encouraged students to not give up and to hustle. She shared that the laptop she earned from the Optimist Club helped her throughout her college career and it was a reminder of how many people were there to support her. Kristin is now a registered nurse. The keynote address at the banquet was given by Gema Duarte. Gema

graduated from Superior High School in 1980 and received her bachelors degree in communication from Arizona State University in 1984. She has maintained a successful career where she has worked for KPNX television, Bank of America and earned many awards as a successful business person and community advocate. In her address to the students, she shared how she was a first generation college student in her family. She encouraged students to call home,

check in with their parents, and talk with them about what they are experiencing. She shared how she found mentor in Rita Carillo who was an SHS alumni. “We are still friends today,” she said. She shared the importance of having mentors and surrounding yourself with people who will support you in your education and career. This year the club awarded certificates to eight - first year three time honor roll recipients: Mira Estatico, Jasmine

Six bronze medals were awarded to Danika Bryant, Myika Cruz, Aubryana Preciado, Jordan Lopez, Monique Sanchez, and Jesus Castellano, all of whom earned the honor roll for three quarters for two consecutive years. Five students earned Silver Medals for earning the honor roll for three consecutive years. They were Matthew Diaz-Gonzales, McKenna Duarte, Jasmine Lopez, Adam Navarrette, Aubreanna Nunez and Matthew Perez. Gold medals were awarded to Queenie Hing, Marlee Estatico, Alondra MunozOchoa and Korrina Romero. This year, eight graduating seniors earned laptop computers. These students earned the honor roll the first three quarters of the year for five consecutive years. Marisa Estatico, Augustine Lou-Hing, Kaili Howell, Kale Majors, Brandon Martinez, Cedric Mendoza, Makayla Martinez and Maddeline Price were each awarded laptop computers to recognize their academic accomplishments. “These awards do not come easy,” said Mistress of Ceremonies, Mila Besich.

“One bad quarter and students have to start all over in the award process.” The Superior Red Bears helped to prepare the steaks for the banquet. They also awarded Jesus Castellanos and Korrina Romero with laptop computers. The Red Bear laptop awards were given to students who missed the five-year recognition by one quarter. “We appreciate the help and support that Red Bear Outfitters gives to our club and the community. Their support of the Red Bear award means more of our students can have the tools they need to succeed,” said JoAnn Besich, Superior Optimist Club Treasurer. “This is one of our signature programs,” said Jessica Castillo, President of the Superior Optimist Club. “We would be unable to host this program if it were not for the ongoing support of our community and those who support our fundraisers.” The primary fundraiser for the Superior Optimist Club is the annual Magma Royale event. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019 at the Magma Club. Tickets and sponsorships will be available soon.
