Welcome to the 29th Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival

“Celebrating Copper” Greetings . . .

Every spring our community comes together to celebrate Superior’s wide and diverse culture. This year is no different as the Superior Chamber of Commerce once again hosts our annual Apache Leap Mining Festival. Our theme this year is “Celebrating Copper,” honoring the industry that is our past, present and future.

Start the long weekend on Friday when the craft and food vendors open at noon and stick around to hear tunes by Bobby Cook & the Ghost Band – then on Saturday cheer at the festival parade, enjoy browsing booths, check out the ever popular Chihuahua races (boy, are those little dogs fast), and watch the amateur and professionals compete in the annual mining competition. Learn the real story of Doc Holiday as Wyatt Earp performs “Doc Holiday, the Story Hollywood Never Told” on Saturday at noon. Stay for lunch and enjoy lots of live music and entertainment including everyone’s favorite – Mogollon! The fun continues Sunday with the Angie Gomez Talent Show and the Dummy Roping Competition. And be sure to catch Marshall Shore, the Hip Historian on Sunday, 3-4 p.m.

There’s lots to see and do throughout the day all over Superior. Be sure to check out all the wonderful shops and restaurants open all day on Main Street and Superior.

Guzman Family recognized Over the years the Superior Chamber of Commerce has taken the opportunity to recognize many of the pioneering families of Superior, the families who have been in the community for generations, the families in which many of the local history and legends are told from.

The 2017 Grand Marshals for the Apache Leap Mining Festival Parade is the Guzman Family. Their family has spanned over six generations in Superior. The matriarch of the family Manuelita Guzman is buried at the Historic Pinal Cemetery and the family works diligently to keep the cemetery grounds in good condition.

Locals will recognize many of the Guzman involved in the community of the years, Albo Guzman who is a longtime business owner in the community and most will never forget the love and generosity given by the late Manuel and Mary Guzman who gave their life to serve the Catholic Church and programs like Project Happy Face/Superior Food Bank.

A more detailed history will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Superior Sun and the family will lead the parade which will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 18. If you would like to join the parade contact the Superior Chamber of Commerce at 520-6890200.

Apache Leap Mining Festival

Mogollon returns to Superior March 18 Mogollon, (pronounced Mug-e-on) began in the small Northeastern Arizona town of Overgaard. The name of the band is derived from the “Mogollon Rim”.

Playing music was a good way for a few high school buddies to impress the girls and to combat the boredom of a small town. After a few performances around the area, people agreed this “hobby” of theirs had potential to become more. And they were right!

Today, Mogollon has earned the reputation as one of the Premier Country Rock Entertainment groups in the West and continues to keep their high standard. Their scope of performing ability is truly amazing!

They can play about anything, from Hank Williams to Pink Floyd to their original written songs.

They will take the stage on Saturday, March 18, at 7 p.m.
