Pinal County Sheriff’s Report The Pinal County Sheriff’s Report is taken from the daily logs, based on the information provided by deputies.

All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Dec. 9 Criminal damage was reported in the 1400 block of North Justice Drive, Oracle.

Dec. 11 Burglary from a vehicle was reported in the

area of the Rockliffe Circle K in Oracle.

Dec. 11 Theft of beer was reported at the Rockliffe Circle K. Dec. 11 A driver reported hitting a cow on South Willow Springs Road, Oracle. The cow wasn’t hurt but the vehicle sustained damage to its windshield and hood.

Dec. 11 Criminal damage was reported in the area of East Webb Drive, San

Manuel.

Dec. 11 Pablo A. Ruiz, 24, Oracle, was arrested in the area of Justice Drive, Oracle, on a warrant for failure to appear. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence.

Dec. 12 Criminal damage was reported at the Oracle Public Library. A large concrete brick was thrown through the window.

Dec. 12 Burglary was

reported in the 40000 block of South Ridgeview Boulevard, SaddleBrooke.

Taken were miscellaneous tools, 2:1 mixture gasoline, red containers and a fire extinguisher.

Dec. 13 Assault was reported in the 1000 block of West Oracle Ranch Road, Oracle.

Dec. 14 Theft of jewelry was reported in the 1000 block of West Paseo Redondo, Oracle.

Dec. 14 Theft was reported in the area of East Main Street, San Manuel.

A person purchased groceries, but had insufficient money to pay for them. A promise to pay the balance was given, but the person failed to return

with the balance owed.

Letter to the Editor: Boycott local store, picketing planned Editor, San Manuel Miner: In recent weeks, we have, as a town, become aware through Adelante Juntos of the potpourri (synthetic marijuana) and paraphernalia used for other drug use that the Salt and Pepper Store is selling. These things are positioned in a place in the store so that kids will be sure to see them.

This of course, is very distressing. We have tried very hard, as a town to rid ourselves of this hazardous addiction.

We do have a boycott going and I hope that all who read this are heeding this boycott until the store manager removes the offensive items.

It was further distressing Sunday, as we were coming home around 2:30 p.m., to see a sheriff’s deputy filling his patrol

pickup with gas at the Salt and Pepper. To be fair to him, maybe he doesn’t know about the drugs and paraphernalia. If not, hopefully he will know, and take heed. We want to have full confidence in our sheriff’s department.

We need to report any incidences like this to the proper authorities, and if

the person in question is approached personally, then it should be done with dignity and honor.

We have been informed that picketing will be done by supporters and coalition members after the holidays. We hope that any able bodied person, who is not working during the picket hours

By John Hernandez At a recent school board meeting, the MammothSan Manuel School District Governing Board approved a power purchase agreement between the Mammoth-San Manuel School District and Tioga Solar Power which

could save the district some serious money over a 20-year period.

The approved agreement will have Tioga Solar Power providing 65 percent of electrical power to the high school and the district office. The school district

will purchase power at the rate of 7.6 cents per kilowatt hour. The district is currently paying between 9 and 11 cents per kwh. It is estimated that going to solar power will save them approximately $10,000 in the first year and the savings will escalate each

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Game and Fish Department in Tucson is reminding sportsmen to renew their hunting and fishing licenses for 2012.

The licenses are valid from Jan. 1, 2012 to Dec. 31, 2012. “Hunting and fishing licenses are a great value in these tough economic times because they last all year,” said Habitat Program Manager John Windes of Game and Fish in Tucson. “They make great gifts or stocking stuffers for family and friends. In addition, they make an ideal last minute gift, since they can be purchased on-line.”

Licenses may be purchased on-line at https://az.gov/app/ huntfish/home.xhtml. They may also be purchased at local sporting goods stores, or at the Game and Fish regional office, 555 N. Greasewood Road, Tucson, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

The Board also authorized Superintendent John Ryan to negotiate a workable lease for part of Avenue B School with Adelante Juntos Coalition.

Adelante Juntos has requested to use the multipurpose room and the building attached to it, which includes five class rooms for a youth center.

Director of Adelante Juntos, spoke to the Board and requested a free lease of the building. She told them they had enough guaranteed funding to pay for furniture and operate the building for one year.

The building, Chavez said, will be used to “provide recreational opportunities that do not exist in the community at this time. It will be a safe, drug free and supervised program.”

Ryan will be evaluating the cost of getting the building ready and the proposed year

to year lease.

In other action, the Board approved the annual 2012 expenditure budget.

A $100 donation from Central Arizona College Phi Theta Kappa to the Exitos Escolar Program was also accepted. First Avenue Elementary School teacher Manuel Chavez explained the program to the Board.

Exitos Escolar is a program that supplies laptop computers to students seeking higher education. It allows them to take a computer with them when they go to college.

Oracle, American Red Cross to host holiday blood drive The American Red Cross and the Oracle Community will be hosting a blood drive at the Masonic Lodge, 700 East Kingston Street, on Thursday, Dec. 29, from 1 to 6 p.m.

The American Red Cross is urging the community to please come out and show their support.

Every holiday season the blood supply faces a unique challenge. Traditionally, as travel on our highways increases, so does the need

for blood. At the same time blood donations decrease as regular donors schedule vacations and college and high school students enjoy a break from their studies.

Unfortunately, the need for blood never takes a vacation.

Without blood on the shelves, the Red Cross will be unable to meet the needs of the community.

The American Red Cross relies on volunteer donors to help collect the blood necessary for life-saving and

life-enhancing procedures for patients. Every two seconds, someone in America is in desperate need of a blood transfusion, yet statistics show that only five percent of

the population donates blood.

With every blood donation, one person can save up to three lives.

Oracle brush abatement program to expand

By John Hernandez When it comes to grant funding, you can never have enough.

Just ask the Oracle Fire Department.

Some new funding has allowed it to extend and expand the brush abatement program.

The Oracle Fire Department has received grants totaling $121,400 from the Arizona State Forestry Division that can be used for brush abatement around private homes. The funds allow a private homeowner living within a quarter mile of Federal land to receive a significant savings in the cost of clearing brush from their land by the Arizona State Forestry Division and their Arizona Department of Corrections Wild Land Fire Crew.

Under the grant private homeowners will only have to pay 10 percent of the cost with the grant providing the remaining 90 percent.

There are many homeowners living within a quarter mile of the Coronado National Forest. The Oracle fire Department sent out

114 letters to qualified property owners in Oracle.

They have received 65 requests for brush abatement work.

Firefighter Tina Acosta manages the pre-work evaluation walk through with the homeowner.

During the walk through potential fire hazards are pointed out and the areas that will need clearing are identified.

The National Firewise Communities D.O.C. Wild land Fire Crew is then brought in and the abatement objectives are explained to them.

“The main objective is to create a defensible perimeter around the homes,” said Oracle Fire Department Battalion Chief Larry Southard.

The Arizona Department of Corrections Wild Land Fire Crew has been doing an excellent job with brush abatement projects around Oracle. This is part of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan which has been developed between the community of Oracle and government agencies to identify wildfire hazards and minimize the dangers should a wildfire occur.

Sun Life welcomes new doctor Season’s Greetings

The Town of Mammoth Mayor, Council and Staff would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a New Year filled with Peace and Happiness.

By John Hernandez The Sun Life Family Health Center in San Manuel will be starting the 2012 New Year with a new doctor.

Dr. Laurie Thomas will officially arrive at the San Manuel clinic on Jan. 3. She has been in San Manuel meeting the staff and familiarizing herself with the facilities.

Dr. Thomas attended the University of Arizona as an undergraduate.

She graduated from the

University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1994. She completed her residency at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital where she trained in family medicine. She has been practicing as a family doctor and is Board certified in family medicine.

Dr. Thomas said she went into family medicine because of the variety of different medical problems she would be dealing with.

Dr. Laurie Thomas has been working at the University of Arizona Campus Health where she covered general medicine, women’s health and urgent care.

Dr. Thomas grew up in a military family and traveled all over the country and the world.

Her father was a pilot in the United States Air Force. During the Vietnam

War she lived at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. She went to high school in West Africa. After graduating high school she was looking at colleges to attend and chose the University of Arizona. It fit her educational needs and she was used to living in warm climates. Once she settled in Tucson she did not want to move around anymore.

“I wanted to put down roots,” she said.

She has lived in Tucson for 33 years.

Dr. Thomas is married to Tom, a free lance television producer.

He does a lot of sports programs and has done some commercials. They have three sons, Jesse (17), Walker (15) and Sean (12). Dr. Thomas says she likes hiking, movies especially the old classics See Doctor, Page 21

Dear Santa ...

As the staff of the San Manuel Miner gathered around their computers, warming their fingers as they typed up this week's newspaper, they heard a clatter outside. Jumping up to see what was the matter, Jennifer ran to the door and threw it open, camera in hand in case of mad criminal conduct.

Much to her surprise, rather than hoodlums or hooligans, what she espied was a rather large sleigh, parked in front of the office door. In the sleigh were several big black bags. Attached to the sleigh were several reindeer, one of whom had a very shiny nose, indeed.

“I have come to report a wonderful thing,” announced someone off to the left of the doorway. Spinning around, she came face to face with a large and jolly fellow, who politely waited until her shriek of alarm tapered off before continuing.

“You see,” said the man in red. “I have received several wonderful letters, that tickled me so much it made my belly shake like a bowl full of jelly, just to read them. I'd like to share them with you, so that you can print them and put a smile on the face of everyone who reads your fine newspaper.”

Unfortunately, before Jennifer could gather her wits and hit the right button on the camera, the man, who was awfully spry for being an aged, white haired and fairly obese gentleman, thrust the letters into her hands, sprang onto the sleigh and, reins gathered in hand, made away so quickly that she wouldn't have been sure she had seen him, in truth, if it weren't for the evidence he left behind.

Here are the letters that he thought were so sweet and so funny that he made a special trip just to deliver them and give you all a smile.

Arizona Trail completes last trail segment in the Copper Corridor

By Mila Lira On Friday, Dec. 16, the Arizona Trail Association along with their partners from Asarco, Copper Basin Railway, the Bureau of Land Management and the Tonto National Forest, completed the last segment of the Arizona Trail on a rugged hilltop overlooking the Gila River near Kelvin.

A brief ceremony was held and work began on the last tiny segment that needed construction.

The name of the final segment completed is the White Canyon passage and is the segment that connects the Picket Post trail head near Superior with the Kelvin/ Riverside area .

The BLM marked the date and celebration of the completion by installing a brass cap survey marker on the trail.

“This trail connects mountains, desert, rivers, and canyons - but what it really connects is people,” said Arizona Trail Association president Emily Nottingham.

Many agency partners and volunteers worked together to complete this path used by hikers, bikers, and equestrians. Twentysix years ago, Flagstaff teacher Dale Shewalter walked from Mexico to the Utah border to scout out a route that would ultimately become the Arizona Trail. Shewalter died in 2010 but founding member of the Arizona Trail Association Jan Hancock said, “Dale’s spirit was felt today.”

Due to work in the area by Asarco, the White Canyon Passage is not yet open to the public. Arizona Trail officials expect the final modification to the trail in this passage will be completed this month and the passage

will be open to the public officially in early January.

A celebration of the completion of the Arizona Trail will be

held on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at the Salt River Project Pera Club in

Tempe.

them back, it’s a quarter a day. DVD fines remain $1 per day per item.

This is the first fine increase at the library in moe than 20 years. As an all-volunteer organization, we have has no salaries or administrative expenses, but we do have to cover utilities, supplies, maintenance, and repairs.

So, bring it back on time; you’ll never pay a fine.

Students at San Manuel Junior-Senior High School receive gift of sight

By John Hernandez Some lucky students in the Mammoth-San Manuel School District got an early Christmas present.

Thanks to Lenscrafters and the One Sight program, 14 San Manuel Junior and Senior High School

students received eyeglasses the Friday before Christmas break.

Lenscrafters has been partnering with the One Sight program for more than 20 years.

One Sight works with Lenscrafters to collect donated eyeglasses and to coordinate with

clinics worldwide to provide individuals with eyewear who could not normally afford it. The program helps kids in need and improves the ability of the child to learn in school.

Health Aide Lisa Armenta said that Lenscrafters set up eye

exams and provided the glasses for the kids through the One Sight Program. Thirty-four more kids at First Avenue Elementary and the Mammoth STEM School will be receiving eyeglasses when they return to school in January 2012.

During the months of November and December the San Manuel Library will accept non-perishable food items in lieu of money for overdue fines. The food will be donated to the TriCommunity Food Bank. For every donated item, $1 will be subtracted from overdue fines. Replacement fees for lost or damaged materials are not part of this program. • Bountiful baskets is coming to San Manuel every other Saturday. The next delivery day is Jan. 7. To participate in the program, you must register online at www.bountifulbaskets.org to make a monetary contribution toward the pools used to purchase the produce.

Contributions can be made starting at noon on Monday until Tuesday at 8 p.m. prior to Saturday pickup. The distribution site is new, now at the Elks Lodge Breezeway in San Manuel. Changes, upgrades and more at Sun Life

By John Hernandez The Sun Life Family Health Center in San Manuel has been busy remodeling the building and grounds as well as upgrading services.

There is a fountain and artificial turf that has been installed at the front entrance of the clinic. A larger sign can be seen from the road. A new computerized phone system is in service and Electronic Health Records (EHR) is coming soon.

The EHR system will enable physicians and medical personnel to access medical records quickly and accurately and send them securely to specialists and technicians that the patient is referred to. The EHR is a computerized patient record that is designed to improve the quality

San Manuel Library making improvements and donations and support from BHP. The added computers and the computer station will allow the library to provide more computer classes and allow customers to use the computers for on line resumes and applications.

“We have a lot of people that use the facility for job hunting,” said Ronnie Butler, Treasurer of the Library Board of Trustees.

The library is waiting for some grants to come through that will allow them to make more renovations and improvements. They are

All of the old lighting fixtures have been replaced making the library twice as bright. The original lighting fixtures were donated by Magma Copper many years ago.

Besides the upgrades and remodeling, the Sun Life clinic and staff have been involving themselves in the community. They have been working with community groups and/ or become members of local organizations such as the Rotary, Elks, Lions, TRIAD, Adelante Juntos and the Safe Journey House.

“We want to work with the community and support everybody we can,” said Al. Recently Al and Kathleen Debiak, P.A. Helped serve over 300 people at the San Manuel Elks Thanksgiving dinner.

“This is our way of thanking the community for their support,” Al said.

A new laptop computer station has been installed adding space for four more computers. There are more laptop computers on reserve should the need arise.

Some new rolling bookshelves have been added allowing for more book space.

The DVD library has been expanded. The shelves as well as a new color printer were provided by Pinal County.

Funding for the improvements came from grants, donations from the general public, the Book Worm Buddy Program

No substantial part of the activities of the corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the corporation shall not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distribution of statements,) any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office. Notwithstanding any other provision of these Articles, the corporation shall not carry on any other activities not permitted to be carried on: (a) by a corporation exempt from Federal Income Tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code (or the corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue Law) or: (b) by a corporation, contributions to which are deductible under Section 170(c)(2) of the United States Internal Revenue Code (or the corresponding provisions of any future United States Internal Revenue Laws). 5. Upon the dissolution of the corporation, the Board of Directors shall, after paying or making provision for the payment of all of the liabilities of the corporation, dispose of all its assets exclusively for the purposes of the corporation in such a manner, or to such organizations organized and operated exclusively for charitable, educational, religious or scientific purpose as shall at the time qualify as an exempt organization or organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code (or the corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue Laws) as the Board of Directors shall determine.

Any such assets not disposed of shall be disposed of by the Superior Court of the county in which the principal office of the corporation is then located, exclusively for such purpose or to such organization or organizations, as said Court shall determine, which are organized and operated exclusively for such purpose.

6. The power of indemnification under the Arizona Revised Statutes shall not be denied or limited by the bylaws. 7. Board of Directors: The initial board of directors shall consist of 1 director. The name and address of the person who is to serve as the director until the first annual meeting of the members, if a member corporation, or Board of Directors, if the corporation has no members, or until his successor is elected and qualifies are: William I. Paine, PO Box 393, 417 W. Sunset Dr., Mammoth, AZ 85618. The number of persons to serve on the board of directors thereafter shall be fixed by the Bylaws. 8.
