Kearny Ambulance to make extended coverage area official By Alison Stanton Copper Basin News The Town of Kearny Ambulance Service is in the process of officially increasing its coverage area. According to Lora Snow, ambulance supervisor for the Town of Kearny Ambulance Service, the current official service area begins 14 miles northwest of the Town of Kearny along Hwy 177 and goes South by Southeast from there 20 miles to the Aravaipa Bridge. This includes the incorporated areas of Town of Kearny, Winkelman and Hayden, and the unincorporated areas of Dudleyville,

Riverside and Battle Ax, she said. “The new area is one that we have always serviced since 1984; this includes the incorporated areas of the Town of Kearny, Hayden and Winkelman, and from there the 20 miles to the Aravaipa Bridge to the college and wilderness area, which would include Dudleyville and Piper spring and the residences along Hwy 77,” Snow said. In order to have the additional areas included, Snow said the ambulance service needed to officially update its coverage area by submitting an amendment to its Certificate of Necessity.

“We have been serving this area anyway, so the main benefit to the residents will be that when a 911 call comes in, it will come directly to our service instead of going all over. This will affect our service area in a positive way,” Snow said. Because the Town of Kearny’s Ambulance Service has already been servicing the additional area for years, Snow said there will not be any additions to staff or equipment, nor will it have a financial impact on the town. “Everything will stay pretty much the same,” she said.

Although the response times have changed a little because of the official wording in the amendment to the Certificate of Necessity, Snow said she wants to set residents’ minds at ease by assuring them the updated times reflect what is already taking place. “These response times have also been unofficially in effect since we have already been servicing the areas, and because of weather and road conditions across the river in the Dudleyville and Riverside areas.” The deadline for written comments on the amendment is November 15.

Avenue and Griffin in San Manuel. A large room will be decorated where the collected nativity sets will be creatively and artistically displayed. Beautiful background music including your favorite Christmas songs will be playing in the background. There will also be a special “Children’s Room” where kids can enjoy themselves and make their own nativity scene with art and craft supplies furnished by the committee. This year John Richins a local Cowboy Poet will be telling cowboy Christmas stories and reciting Cowboy Christmas poetry. The event is open to the public and is free. Crèches (Nativity scenes) are being collected by the committee to use in the display. Last year over 550 nativity scenes from over 40 countries were on display. Some of the nativity scenes were family heirlooms handed down from generation to generation. One crèche was over 100 years old. If you have a nativity scene, wall hanging, picture or anything that depicts the birth of Jesus and would like to have it be a part of the display, contact Dorothy Staggs at 520-896-9780. Each nativity box will be labeled with a number for tracking purposes and it is asked that you put your name and phone number on the box. If your crèche does not come in a box, please provide one so that it can be labeled and given a number. Crèches will be treated with the utmost care. The committee will be collecting crèches until Nov. 23. Anyone can loan their nativity scene for the Crèches, Page 8

Kearny Elks on Saturday hosted a special spaghetti dinner in honor of local veterans. Resplendent among the different flags and patriotic decorations was the traditional “America’s White Table” which honors the men and women who served in America’s Armed Forces, but who may have not returned from the field of battle. “We cover the table with a white cloth

to honor a soldier’s pure heart when he answers his country’s call to duty. “We place a lemon slice and grains of salt on a plate to show a captive soldier’s bitter fate and tears of families waiting for loved ones to return. “We push an empty chair to the table for the missing soldiers who are not here.

“We lay a black napkin for the sorrow of captivity, and turn over a glass for the meal that won’t be eaten. “We place a white candle for peace and finally, a red rose in a vase tied with a red ribbon for the hope that all our missing will return someday. “You are not forgotten so long as there is one left in whom your memory resides.”

Great season ends at State Tourney for ‘Cats volleyball team By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The 10th seeded Ray girls’ volleyball team lost its first-round state tournament match to seventh-seeded Joy Christian last Friday, 3 – 0. The state tournament was played at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott, AZ. Top-seeded St. David defeated sixth-seeded, and Section IV champion, St. Johns for the state title. The ‘Cats finished 21-11-1 on the season, including 9-2 in their section, which was good enough for second place in their section and an automatic bid to the state tournament. Head coach Rikki Galka along with assistant coaches Brad Richards and Tanya Reidhead helped the players on the team improve from week to week. In an interview during the season, Coach Galka told the Copper Basin News she saw results from the team’s hard work. “When

the team is focused on playing together we are able to achieve a high level of success,” Galka said at the time. The players’ commitment to improve was an important factor in them reaching the state tournament. The ‘Cats will lose three seniors off this year’s state qualifying team. Alicia Romero, Lucy Sainz, and Mariah Denny are the seniors who will be graduating in the spring. The ‘Cats could have up to nine players return with varsity experience next season. Freshman Gabbi Montano, sophomores Stormee Galka and Sarah Duncklee, and juniors Sabrina Martinez, Brandy Schneider, Sidney Chenoweth, Adriana Lopez, Gabby Juvera, and Elissa Rodriguez are all expected to return. The experience of this season should provide optimism for next year, including a deep run in the state tournament.
