From boots to ballots Kylea Tink’s political path

Federal Member for North Sydney, Kylea Tink was in Coonabarabran this week, catching up with family and friends, and sharing her journey to her success with local students. by GEORGIA SPENCE Ms Tink returned to her old stomping grounds to celebrate Easter with her family, but also used the opportunity to inspire students at Coonabarabran High School’s inaugural Alumni Career Event on Tuesday, 2 April. During the event, she reflected on her journey from a young, country girl, to a determined, Independent politician and advocate for the northern suburbs of Sydney. It was at Coonabarabran High School where Ms Tink first discovered the values that paved her path to success. When she first arrived as a Year 7 student, her teacher, Don Harvey, placed her in the Year 12 debating team – where she rarely lost a debate. When speaking to the current generation of Coona High students, Ms Tink underscored the enduring values instilled by the school, which she said had stayed with her throughout her life. Those values were to fix what is broken and to help others. These principles continue to inform her political career, while also maintaining her country roots. Growing up, Ms Tink witnessed her parents actively contribute to the Coonabarabran community. She watched their involvement in the construction of the Coonabarabran Tennis Club and the pre-school on Robertson Street, while her father volunteered for the NSW Rural Fire Service. Ms Tink attributes part of her career success to the strong sense of community instilled during her upbringing. “When I reflect on what I have learnt out here, it is the sense of community and what it means to be a member of a community,” Ms Tink said. “Community is about accepting responsibility for making it stronger. “If you think something is broken, be a part of fixing it. If you think something is wrong, be part of setting it right. “Being an Independent politician is so much more

empowering because I can be the true voice. I am not in it for a career, or to win favours, or to put myself ahead. I am 100 per cent for the community.” Ms Tink never envisioned herself as a politician while growing up in Coonabarabran. She left town in 1994, in pursuit of a job in Sydney, going on to become a committed business leader and social advocate. Currently residing in North Sydney, she was elected as the local Federal Member in May 2022. Ms Tink said throughout 2020 and 2021 she became increasingly concerned over the Liberal and Labor Governments’ disconnect from the Australian people. She said the two major political parties were busy fighting each other and important reforms were not happening. Approached by the people of North Sydney to become an Independent voice for the community, she was elected on her values of climate action, political integrity, transparency and economic equity. “My role is to listen to community, understand the changes they want to be made, take that information to Canberra and make sure the information is delivered to the right minister,” she said. “Democracy is only as strong as the people who turn up for it, and every politician should be answerable to community.” Among her other passions is advocating for community education on human rights, particularly in light of Australia’s status as one of the few western nations without a Human Rights Act. Ms Tink tries to get back home to Coonabarabran every six months and the Alumni Event allowed her to outline her journey from the country to Canberra. Not only did she provide wisdom and encouragement to students, but she personally gave her support to all who approached her. Ms Tink said she hopes to continue her tenure as an Independent Member of Parliament, fighting to empower the community and give strength to their voices.

Coona High alumni supporting the steps to career success Former students of Coonabarabran High School returned to the classroom room this week, offering current students relatable advice and showcasing a diverse range of post-school pathways at the inaugural Alumni Careers Event. by GEORGIA SPENCE A number of presenters from a range of fields, including p o l i t i c s , l a w, f i l m , geology, town planning and aged care, were invited to the event. Thei r goal was to ignite inspi ration as th ey reco u nted th e i r personal journey from Coonabarabran to their chosen career path. The event ai med to highlight the many pathways students could take after high school. W i t h i n t h e Coonabarabran High School hall, students in Years 10, 11 and 12 were split into small groups for a speed-networking session. Students were able to ta l k to the a l um n i a n d a s k t h e m d i re ct questions within the time frame. Coonabarabran High careers advisor, Heather Frewin said s h e w a s h a p py w i t h the way students were engaged. “This is the first year w h e re we h a ve h a d alumni come and talk

to the students – I think it can be more relatable for them,” M rs Frewin said. “It showcases the transition out of school and the steps you can take. There is not just o n e p a t h wa y o u t o f school – and it may not necessarily be the pathway they first think. “We get the s t u d e nt s to b ro a d e n their horizons and be prepared for anything that may open up. There may be new ca re e r o p p o r t u n i t i es with the way industr y and innovation moves.” Mrs Frewin said the event ca pt u red the schoo l’s b roade r goals of student success, through t h e co l l a b o ra t i o n of the sen io r hospital it y students and the Student Representative Council. The SRC co - hosted the event, presenting a lunch the senior hospitality students had made throughout the morning. The feedback from students in attendance was wholly positive, with those looking to gain

inspiration saying they felt more determined at the conclusion of the event.

Attendees also fe l t t h e co nte nt wa s relatable, due to the fact the alumni initially

worked in local cafes and businesses and were now successful in their career goals.

Mrs Frewin said the school hoped to secure funding for an alumni event next year, as she

recognised the value in motivating students towa rd s t h e i r ca re e r goals.

Newly-graduated lawyer, Ash Smith, explained how she continued to live and work in Coonabarabran while gaining her degree.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR  editor@coonabarabrantimes.com Bunny Bazaar T he E ast er Bu n ny Bazaar is over for another year and full credit to those who put so much effort into the event. Compare this year’s event with last year, when John Street and a portion of Dalgarno S t r e et wer e blo c ke d to traffic, stalls in the middle of those streets and people walking on the road and footpaths with little hindrance; all in all a very pleasant and laid-back experience. This year, John Street was open to traffic and a portion of Dalgarno Street was blocked to traffic. People crowded on to the footpaths in John Street and were dodging cars and trucks getting from one side to the other. Those with children in prams and the older people with walkers and wheelchairs, having to try and nav igate the crowded footpath. As the story got around that our Council had placed a prohibitive cost on closing John Street to traffic, the comments

should have had ears burning. But then again, I don’t think they would be that concerned – after all, when you are closeted in a comfortable office out of sight you tend to loose sight of what is going on out in the real world. Yours etc., Russell Bright Coonabarabran 2357 (02.04.2024) Kindness of strangers On Sunday, 24 March, my brother and I travelled f rom the Sunshine Coast and arrived late at Coonabarabran. We were unable to locate our motel as the sign was not illuminated and I had not been able to download the booking response, so we did not know the exact address. We drove back into the town and my brother asked a you ng ma n , John, for directions. He and his wife, Rebecca, took us to the Azalea Motel a nd R ebecca helped me sort out the bo ok i ng w ith a ver y courteous and helpful employee (Raoul?). We

were very pleased with the accommodation. R eb e c c a a nd Joh n explained that, as it was now so late, we would not be able to get a meal and gave us their Chinese meal which they had purchased. We w o u l d l i k e t o t h a n k a l l t h r e e fo r their kindness. What a fortunate town to have such thoughtful citizens! Yours etc., Brenda Tranter Sunshine Coast Qld (31.03.2024) Rotary needs you! Last Monday even i n g, a g r oup of Coonabarabran residents sat down to share a meal. There was a good deal of chatter and laughter, we listened to one person’s favourite piece of music, and generally everyone had a really good time. In addition, we discussed some important matters, and made a few collective decisions. After one-anda-half hours we parted and went our separate ways. So what, you might ask, was happening? It wa s the we ek ly

meeting of the Coonabarabran Rotary Club, a bunch of people who really enjoy each other ’s compa ny a nd sha re a n i nterest i n doi ng s ometh i ng for the community and the wider world. Rotary is quite uncomplicated really. With 1.2 million members world-wide, it encourages us to live honestly, work ethically, and to consider how we can help others; values that provide a sound foundation for building the best kind of community. So, why this letter to the editor you may be thinking? A few weeks ago, there was a meeting in town to consider the formation of a L ions Club here. Lions clubs do marvellous things. Here in Coonabarabran we a l ready have a Rotary Club and we’d like you to think about what it provides for the commun ity, and how being in R otar y may enrich your life. So, what else happens at a Rotary meeting? S ometimes we might have a guest speaker.

This week we are playing barefoot bowls, a few weeks ago, a fun game of golf. We have dinners to celebrate St Valentine’s Day, or Mother’s Day or anything else we might choose to celebrate. It’s all a lot of fun, and we love it. It’s easy to get involved in wider projects. Some of our members rebuilt a school in Vanuatu, ot her s bu i lt nu r s e s ’ accommodation in Kokoda. And Rotary has worked tirelessly to all but completely eradicate polio from the world. Of course, being in R ot a r y c ost s money. T here a re subs each year, and a meal to pay for each week that you attend (it’s a cracking good meal, I might say!) But there’s no obligation to attend every week – we come when we can, and if you prefer not to share the meal, that’s okay too. All hobbies or interests or sports cost

us money. Fund-raising mostly happens through our Rotary Bookshop in Cassi l is Street, a wonderful example of community volunteering by a great band of helpers, and through our catering trailer. We can cook a mean sausage, and the best steak sandwich! What happens to the money raised? Between Ju ly 2 01 2 a nd Ju ne 2023 we used $30,769 on town projects, gave away $ 2 87,0 5 8 t o C o o n a b a r a b r a n ’s community organisations at our annual dinner and used $50,518 on youth projects – a t ota l of $368,345.00. That’s not bad for this little band of friends! Add to that, $250,000 from Rotarians across Australia given to residents after the fires in 2013, and $250,000 during the drought. In May, our club will be 75 years old. One of Rotary’s strengths is

How would your friends and family describe you in three words? Fun and loving. What are your favourite places to visit on a road trip? I want to go to Kempsey soon – they have a memorial down there for Slim Dusty. He’s my favourite for Country music.

Have you read any good books or watched any good movies lately? I like watching a lot of Mel Gibson movies and old westerns, like John Wayne. What a re the top th ree i tems on your bucket list? Probably travelling Australia. Would love to see more of it. I’ve mostly been to Queensland and NSW – and a bit of South Australia. Do you have a hidden talent? Do you have a favourite community event or group? I just like doing my own thing.

When was the last time you had a really good laugh? 18-19 months ago at a friend’s party. My friend was drunk and we dressed him as a woman, and made him run around town. We put makeup on him and he ran around in bra and knickers. He got a couple of whistles. It was the best laugh we’ve had.

Best thing about living in Coonabarabran? The people in general.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Mind my own business.

What would you listen to on the road trip? Slim Dusty – drives my wife mad, but we take it in turns. What’s one totally irrational fear that you have? I don’t really have too many fears.

Surprise quoll found near Coonabarabran The discovery of Australia’s largest mainland carnivorous marsupial on a local property is seen as a good sign for the future of the threatened species. by LIZ CUTTS When local resident, Meg Walton was woken in the early hours with a commotion in her duck pen, she thought at first t h at a l a rg e p o s s u m was responsible for the racket. “ I h a d n eve r s e e n anything like it before,” Meg said. “ It took one of the ducklings and climbed up a tree in the back garden. I had to look up a ‘spot ted b row n animal’ on the internet to find out that it was a spotted-tail quoll!” However, Meg said the next night the quoll returned, killing a total of two ducklings and three turkeys. “On advice from N at i ona l Pa r k s a nd Wildlife we bought two fresh chickens and put them in borrowed box traps in the turkey pen and the next day found the quoll caught in one of them,” Meg added. “It got into the pens by digging under the fe n ci n g, so we h ave now put all the ducks, turkeys and chickens in

the same pen together and put mesh under the cage so nothing can dig through again. “It was a bit scary at first, because I did not know what it was.” A spokespe r son fo r the National Pa r k s a n d W i l d l i fe S e r v i ce (NPSW) said there has o n l y been a ha ndf u l of recorded sightings of spotted-tailed quolls in the Coonabarabran area over the last two decades. “The Spottedtailed quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) captu red o n p r i va t e p r o p e r t y near Coonabarabran was a male. The animal appeared very healthy, with a lovely shiny coat and weighed in at just over 4kg. “Spotted-tailed quolls are highly mobile. They can move several k i l o m et re s ove r n i g ht a nd have ve r y l a rg e te r r ito r ies, especia l l y in lower rainfall areas w he re food can be scarcer. They are mainly solitary animals and will make their dens in rock shelters or hollow logs or tree hollows.

“It is breeding season for quolls now, which is why this male may have been seen outside where it would normally live.” N PWS s a i d t h at a l l confirmed quoll sightings a re re co rd e d i n t h e B ionet s ystem, w h ich helps to increase our knowledge of these elusive creatures. Habitat “ W h i l e t h e q u o l l s’ natural habitat is t h e f o r e s t, t h e y w i l l sometimes travel across open country including farms, where they find abundant, accessible food such as rabbits and poultr y. If you’ve got chooks, you are likely to have quolls checking out your animals. “To protect poultr y, ensure your pen is designed to keep predators out, not just to keep your chickens or ducks in. “Quolls are awesome climbers and are smaller t h a n yo u t h i n k , w i t h j u ven i l es ca pa b l e of fitting through regular 40mm hexagonal chicken wire. They are also accomplished

diggers, so if your pen has an earthen floor, you will need to extend your fence below ground.” H i s to r i c a l l y, q u o l l s were treated as pests and were trapped, s h ot o r p o i s o n e d by people protecting their chooks. Occasionally, quolls died from injuries sustained from trying to enter or exit chook pens. These practices have contributed to a decline in quoll numbers, and quolls are now listed as an endangered species in NSW. If you suspect or see a quoll visiting your hen house, NPWS ask that you contact your Local Land Services or National Parks and Wildlife office. They may also be able to help you with a motion camera to identify the species or advise you on how to quoll-proof your hen house. After being checked out and its good health conf i r med, Meg’s spotted-tail quoll was released back into the wild as soon as possible to give it the best chance at reproduction.

The unwelcome spotted-tail quoll visitor caught in a trap and relocated.

Bush fire danger period draws to a close The Bush Fire Danger Period ended on 31 March 2024 for 36 Local Government Areas (LGA), including the Warrumbungle and Gilgandra shires. by GEORGIA SPENCE Fire agencies and land managers will now turn their attention towards conducting hazard reduction works over the cooler months. Local fire-danger ratings continue, meaning planned burns will be indicative of conditions. NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) inspector Dez White, from Coonabarabran Fire Control Centre, said members of the public must abide by the law when commencing hazard-reduction burns. While fire permits are no longer required from 1 April, landowners must notify their neighbours and the local fire authority, 24 hours before burning. “ B efore l ighti ng up, people should have sufficient equipment on hand to control and contain the fire to their property,” Insp. White said.

“ There is always the potential for f ires to threaten life, property and the env i r on ment i f they are not managed correctly. Ca l l T r iple Z er o (0 0 0) immediately should a fire escape the property. “ I urge all residents to take the threat of bush fire seriously and to prepare their families and home now.” Insp. White said local fire agencies had a reasonable bushfire season, with an intense December due to the Duck Creek Fire, which was started by a dry lightning storm. The fire burnt through more than 128,000 hectares of the Pilliga Forest, with 47 trucks, eight aircraft and more than 10 0 personnel deployed to fight the fire at its peak. The RFS worked long and hard to gain control and volunteers were relieved

when close to 93 millimetres of rain fell throughout the forest. Over the past six weeks, the RFS has been called to a handful of fires within the Warrumbungle Shire area, but has managed to get on top of them quickly. I nsp. W h it e sa id the c om mu n it y shou ld not become complacent to the dangers of bushfires and g rass f i res in the cooler months. She recommends contacting a local fire station, or Fire Control Centre for information on how to safely undertake a hazard reduction burn and best prepare for the next bushfire season. Insp. White recommends households upd at e thei r bush f i re su r v iva l pla n over the winter and form a discussion within the home and with neighbours.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Warrumbungle Children’s Services

Tooraweenah Public I hope all wish family and friends enjoyed a very happy Easter. Dog Man performance A v e r y e nj o y a bl e d ay was had by a l l on the excursion in Dubbo. Our Kindergarten students, in particular, enjoyed seeing a live performance on stage with music and many special effects. Many students have been curious about reading the Dog Man stories, five of which can

be borrowed from our school library. A fter the performance, students had recess in the park and played on the new fixed equipment there. It was pleasing to note that our students’ behaviour was exemplary at the Dubbo Theatre and while playing at the park. Well done, everyone! Technology fun Maddison Jenkin, along w ith others i n the 2 /3 /5 class, recently built a Lego

catapult during technology. Maddison’s catapult achieved the greatest throw distance, at a length of 440cm! Great to see the 2/3/5 class making and testing their models. Ag@Toora O u r pumpk i n v i nes i n both our wicking beds and ground plantings have been growing prolifically and we have already picked a few pumpkins from the vines. Karen Smith Principal

Mrs Quilter, Georgia Martin, Eloise Semmler, Storme Bray, Eloise Jenkin and Bonnie Alison enjoyed the performance of Dog Man at the Dubbo Regional Theatr.

Saint Lawrence’s Sister Madeline farewell On Monday. 25 March, St Lawrence’s farewelled Sr Madeline, the last of the Sisters of Saint Joseph to reside in Coonabarabran. Staff and students gathered in our school hall to thank Sr Madeline and farewell her with a few special gifts, our best wishes and a cake. Sr Madeline shared with t h e s t ud e nt s a b o ut h e r t i me i n C o on aba rabra n . Sr Madeline first moved to Coonabarabran in 1960 and taught at our school. She was

Yaama Maliyaa. On Monday, 25 March, as a continuation of Harmony We e k , t h e c h i l d r e n a t Yuluwirri Kids celebrated Holi, the Festival of Colours. Hol i is a popu la r a nd significant Hindu festival and was suggested by one of our families who celebrate Holi as part of their culture. The Festival of Colours is a celebration of love and new beginnings – and is also quite messy!

At Yuluwirri K ids, the ch i ld r en st a r t ed w it h a colourful veggie platter for morning tea, followed by spray bottle painting to make a banner for our Holi Festival. T he ch i ld ren then made individual bubble-blowing paintings using many bright colours while listening to music from a Holi Festival Playlist. Later, the children were offered the opportunity to paint their skin using non-

toxic paint and loved having t hei r a r m s pa i nt e d a nd sharing their unique patterns with one another. The children learned that each colour has a special meaning, like red for love and yellow for turmeric – a spice used in Indian cooking. Like many festivals, Holi is a time for families to spend time together, enjoy food, music and dancing, and people from all backgrounds are encouraged to get involved.

Holi Festival with Frankie, Aaron, Kyle, Wolf and Khloe with their Holi Festival banner.

Coonabarabran Public here for a five-year period until 1965, before moving away and eventually coming back in 2011. Since 2011, Sr. Madeline has been a part of the St Lawrence’s Parish team and has been involved in many of our school sacramental Masses. St Lawrence’s has loved her visits to the school to talk to the students and have an occasional cup of tea or coffee with the staff. We would like to wish Sr Madeline all the best with her move to Bathurst.

Cross Country On Monday, 25 March, we had ou r s cho ol cr oss country event, held at the Coonabarabran Golf Club. Students from every year ran, with the infants running one kilometre, Years 3 and 4 running two kilometres, and Years 5 and 6 running three kilometres. It was a great morning, with every student participating and giving their best effort. We acknowledge Mrs Megan Redden’s efforts in organising a smooth running event.

T her e was cer t a i n ly a bu z z o f e x c it eme nt a nd anticipation as CPS hopped into the Easter weekend. As part of our Learning Support program, our ATSIC students and anyone with special needs or concerns has a Personalised Learning Plan. These are created by the staff and students and sig ned by the parents at a special barbecue dinner prior to a disco for the whole school. The positive buzz and connection to community at this was infectious. Staff, parents and students alike enjoyed a sausage and chat prior to the children and a few adults carving up the dance floor in the hall. Over the Odds CENTRAL & WESTERN RACING by COL HODGES John Woods and Bandi’s Boy Bandi’s Boy, the likely favourite for the $1 million Country Championship final at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 6 April, and well-performed Central West galloper Taren Lad, raced more than 50 years apart, however, were linked through ownership by John Woods. The very-well liked and respected John Woods, at his property near Cowra, died in tragic circumstances in February, but with one wish fulfilled – the wish to get another good horse after Taren Lad.

14 - Coonabarabran Times, Thursday, 4 April 2024

Auctioned after winning the Flying Handicap at Bedgerabong Picnics, John Woods rejected the final bid of $1600 for Taren Lad and retained ownership, with subsequent good results. T r a i n e d a t Bedgerabong village by former picnic jockey Roy Parsons, Taren Lad (Teranyan X Raven Lady) became a prolific winner on Central West tracks and in the early 1970s was taken to Sydney for a six-furlongs handicap at Warwick Farm. Connections secured extravagant odds of 66/1 and they were feeling confident of collecting when Taren Lad, starting at 50/1, after being 12th on the turn, dashed through an opening on the rails to hit the front close to home. Urging on Taren Lad from the grandstand, trainer Roy Parsons lost his balance and tumbled down a flight of steps. When helped to his feet and dusted off by John Woods and friends, Roy asked, “did we win?” Unfortunately, Roy was informed another outsider, Berrinup at 20/1, had unleashed a powerful finishing burst down the outside to grab Taren Lad in the last stride and win by

a half head, with Jet Pilot, owned by Jack Darcy ,formerly from Bedgerabong, in third place. Taren Lad was later trained at Grenfell by Chris Hardy, the father of present day Wagga Wagga trainer Chris Hardy, and won two Cowra Cups and the Cotton Cup at Warren. Always with a passion for horses, John Woods had a brief stint as a jockey on the picnic circuit and later, on his well-run farm “Manna Park” in the Burcher area, he began preparing and riding horses in three-day eventing and showjumping. Grey Duke, a prolific picnic cups winner when trained at Forbes by Charlie Piercy and ridden by Ken Parsons, when retired was obtained by John Woods for showjumping and became one of his best mounts when achieving considerable success at the Sydney Royal. During the final stages and on the brink of being selected for the Olympic Games threeday eventing team, John withdrew due to having to self fund the big expenses involved. Another interest for John was the Forbes

Jockey Club, of which he was a popular member of the committee for over 30 years and for 10 of those years he was the Forbes representative on the Central Districts Racing Association. Part-owned by John Woods and trained at Dubbo by Frank Hayes, the filly, Tibidabo, began racing in 2016 and over the first four starts won at Goulburn and Coonamble and finished second in a Highway at Rosehill. During a brief career, Tididabo was later trained at Muswellbrook by Pat Farrell, who formed a good friendship with John Woods. “I thoroughly enjoyed my weekly chats on the phone with John, who was a very nice fellow,” Pat Farrell recalled. After retirement, Tibidabo was sent by John Woods to the Kooringal Stud, owned by the Lamont family at Wagga Wagga, and joined to The Brothers War. Not long after having her foal, Tididabo died and the orphaned Bandi’s Boy was reared as a poddy. Trained at Goulburn by Danny Williams, the John Woods’ bred-andowned Bandi’s Boy made

an auspicious debut when finishing fifth in the G3 Kindergarten Stakes and followed with three wins at Randwick over the next seven starts. Two days after the largely attended memorial service for John Woods at Forbes, the Danny Williams trained favourite, Bandi’s Boy, ridden by regular jockey Jay Ford, came from well back with a big finish to win the $150,000 Country Championship SERA Qualifier at Moruya. Danny Williams decided on another start for his rising star before the championship decider and last Saturday at Rosehill, Bandi’s Boy, at $15, and again ridden by Jay Ford, finished powerfully from midfield to win the 1200 metres $250,000 Kingdom Stakes at Rosehill from Malkovich and Roots. Bandi’s Boy, the good horse John Woods always hoped to get after Taren Lad was beaten in a photo finish more than 50 years ago at Warwick Farm, will have a huge following from John’s family, friends and racing fans when contesting the $1 million Country Championship final on Saturday at Royal Randwick.

Fingerlings make a splash

Pod’s maiden win

The Coonabarabran Fishing Club is actively engaged in restocking the Castlereagh River with native fish to promote their thriving population. by GEORGIA SPENCE R e cently, the Fishing Club released 70 0 0 G olden Perch fingerlings, or ‘Yellow Bellys’ into the river. The fish were supplied by Narrabri Fish Farm with the hope they will support the ecosystem and grow into sizeable f ish for re creationa l fishing. For the last 12 years, the F ish ing Club, in conjunction with NSW Fisheries, has raised money t o add more native fish into the local river. Through the Native R estocking prog ram, NSW Fisheries provides $2 to the club for each dollar raised. The restocking program aims to

prot e ct a nd en ha nce aquaculture ventures and encourage community involvement w ith i n lo ca l wat er sources. Grant Wood, secretary of the Coonabarabran Fishing Club, expressed e n t hu s i a s m f o r t h e release of the fingerlings to the Castlereagh River. “They breed naturally a nd t he i nc r e a s e i n numbers will make it better for fishing and the habitat in general,” Mr Wood said. “They eat pest species and they grow up to be decent sized fish. “The Fishing Club is mostly about restocking the river. It’s good for environment, good for community – we have a beautiful river and

we love to see people using it. “ F ishing is more enjoyable when you have fish to catch!” Fishing Club members also do their best to protect native fish from invasive, pest species such as carp. Mr Wood said carp “ br e e d l i ke r a bbit s ” and take over the environment, making it difficult for native fish to breed. In order to combat this, the Fishing Club hosts a biannual Carp Muster. T he competition involves a weekend of catching ca r p and is inclusive of all ages and skill levels. P r i z e s a r e up f o r g rabs for a ra nge of categories, however, the

major prize is for the person who measures closest to the mystery size, which is drawn on the day. “ T hat way, a l l you have to do is catch a fish and anyone could win the prize, including kids,” Mr Wood said. T he e v e nt i s he ld over a weekend, with the weigh-i n a nd a sausage sizzle held on the Sunday afternoon, at the Coonabarabran Golf Club. Mr Wood said around 150 people participate each time and it is a p opu l a r d ay out for those keen on fishing. Coonabarabran’s first Carp Muster was held 12 years ago and the 2024 event will be held on 27-28 April. Coonabarabran’s Rodney “Pod” Phillips was thrilled when his horse, Vermillion Dragon, secured a 1500 metre Maiden Handicap win at Kembla Grange, near Wollongong, on Friday, 15 March. It was the three-year-old’s first start, collecting $22,000 prize money for the placing. The Ciaron Maher trained racehorse will compete in Melbourne on Wednesday, 10 April, and if it wins, will move onto the South Australian Derby later in the year. Pod has had shares in Vermillion Dragon for eight months, as well as Charcoals, who is being trained by Anthony Freedman out of Melbourne. As a former horse trainer himself, Pod said the future looked bright for Vermillion Dragon. “It was a very impressive win - 3.3 lengths,” Pod said.

Coonabarabran Fishing Club released 7000 Golden Perch fingerlings into the Castlereagh River last month.

Rhiannon Byers back home for rugby league skills session MOREE By BILL POULOS

Proud Pallamallawa NRLW star Rhiannon Byers headlines an all-star cast arriving in Moree on Wednesday to launch the Project Pathfinder rugby league skills session at Boughton Oval. Byers, a former Australian Rugby 7s international now with Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the NRL women’s competition, will launch the Pathfinder initiative alongside Sharks team-mate and NRL development officer Quincy Dodd, and star South Sydney Rabbitohs Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker. Byers (pictured) is Moree bornand-bred. She grew up in Pallamallawa and moved to Sydney after completing her HSC at Warialda High School nearly seven years ago. In 2019, Byers played in the Australian Rugby 7s team, winning gold in the Oceania 7s in Dubai. She also collected a silver medal at the World Series titles in 2020 before switching to rugby league in 2023. Byers said the Project Pathfinder program, an NRL initiative, was the perfect springboard for aspiring rugby league players from rural and regional Australia. Continued on page 2

Police continuing inquiries into two Moree break-ins Police news

Inquiries are continuing into two break-ins in Moree from early March. Just after 2am on Tuesday, March 5, a 79-year-old woman was asleep

at her home on Oak Street, Moree, when she was woken by four people who had forced entry to the residence before stealing her handbag and keys. The group fled, stealing her car. Shortly before 3am, four people forced entry into a home on Gwydir Street, when they were

confronted by the occupants, an 84-year-old woman and a 85-yearold man. The man was pushed to the ground with the group demanding keys. The group fled empty handed in car stolen an hour earlier. The man was taken to Moree Hospital for treatment for

lacerations to his body. The car was located abandoned and damaged at the intersection of Florence and Adelaide Street, Moree. Police attended both homes and have commenced an investigation into the incidents, which they believed are linked.

Police are now appealing for information about the incidents and those believed to be involved. As inquiries continue, anyone with information about these incidents, or dashcam or CCTV from the area is urged to contact Moree Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“It’s a great opportunity for the kids to strive to achieve their dreams and goals, and (Project Pathfinder) shows them, just because they’re from the country, doesn’t mean their dreams and goals can’t be reached,” Byers said. Her advice to all kids in the bush with a football in their hands and stars in their eyes is to “keep going” and never give up. “I know that’s easier said than done but only you can prove everyone wrong, so keep going. The setbacks may feel major now, but they’re blessings in disguise. The harder you work adds fuel to the fire in your belly, and you will go out and show everyone the setbacks made you stronger, faster and fitter,” she said. Byers, a hard-running forward, said her career was “shaping up well” after her debut season last year was curtailed by a wrist injury in round one against Canberra Raiders. “I snapped my scaphoid palming a player

and had surgery four days after the game,” she said. Byers played for another 26 minutes and made 26 tackles. “I’ve signed until 2025 and it’s awesome to see the sport growing. It’s exciting times (with) new challenges, and I can’t wait to tackle it front on,” she said. Byers, 24, is a proud Wiradjuri woman and a country girl at heart. “I was born in Moree but I grew up in Pallamallawa. I give back to both, but I love being called a 'Pally girl',” she smiled. Project Pathfinder, a youth engagement program, gets underway at Boughton Oval on Wednesday, April 3, starting at 10.45am. Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys will be in Moree for the project’s launch as well as South Sydney stars Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker. Everyone is invited to come along and meet the NRL and NRLW players, participate in rugby league skills training and enjoy a barbecue lunch and refreshments.

Coulton to retire at next election Mr Coulton’s dedication. “Mark Coulton is without doubt the hardest-working and dedicated local MP I have ever had the pleasure of working with or come across,” Mr Marshall said. “I congratulate Mark on his 16plus years serving the communities of the Parkes electorate. “He has set the benchmark for commitment and duty to a vast and diverse rural electorate, covering tens of thousands of kilometres by road each year to ensure every community – large, small and remote – has access to their local Member of Parliament. “Together with wife Robyn, Mark will leave behind an enviable record of achievement and service, vigorously speaking up and speaking out in Canberra on behalf of the people of rural and regional Australia, especially those who often feel they do not have a voice at all. “I thank Mark for his selfless dedication to the community. It has been a pleasure to work alongside him. He is deeply respected and will be genuinely missed by his electorate.

“Congratulations on a stellar career Mark and all the very best for your future with Robyn and your family in the next chapter of your life.” Former Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said Mr Coulton had always taken a common-sense approach to issues. Nationals leader David Littleproud said Mr Coulton’s

unwavering dedication to his principles and the people across Parkes had shaped the party and the nation for the better. “Your advocacy has helped to improve the lives of so many and shaped a better future for regional Australia,” he said. The next election, if including the half-Senate, will need to be held before May next year.

from February 2020 to July 2021. Mr Coulton announced his retirement with “mixed emotions”. “It has been an incredible honour to represent the people of the Parkes electorate for more than 16 years, but the time has come for me to step aside,” he said. “I’ve spent the past 16 years travelling hundreds of thousands of kilometres across my electorate, getting to know the strong and vibrant communities I represent. “It has been a great privilege and I’m extremely proud of everything we’ve been able to achieve over that time. “But it’s time for a fresh face to take up the baton and I’m looking forward to the members of The Nationals in the Parkes electorate finding a suitable replacement who can continue to provide strong representation in Canberra. “In the meantime, I will continue to proudly represent this wonderful electorate with the utmost enthusiasm until the next election.” State Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall praised
