Pantelleria island's hybridization project presented at "Greening the Islands" conference

15-MW of solar photovoltaic plants planned as a way to cut fuel costs by 70%

Pantelleria, Italy, 30 October 2014 - The remote Italian island of Pantelleria is poised to become an example of sustainability of global relevance. Its hybridization project is being exclusively presented during "Greening the Islands: Energy & Water", a conference taking place on the island today and tomorrow.

The project is backed by So.fi.p, the owner of the electric utilities on the islands of Linosa, Lampedusa, Pantelleria and Marittimo, in collaboration with Global Hybrid Power (GHP), a company that finances, develops and manages projects integrating conventional energy supply systems with renewable energy sources and energy storage systems.

The design phase is already completed, based on a plan to integrate the current diesel-powered plant with a solar photovoltaic plant and a hybridization system that includes storage. The solar plant will be developed in steps, starting with an initial installation of 1 MW, to reach a total of 15 MW.

The hybridization project, once the full 15 MW of solar power is on line, will lead to a 70% reduction in consumption of the fuel needed to run the plant, which currently arrives at Pantelleria by barge. A costly system both in economic and in environmental terms.

Pantelleria has a population of about 7,700 inhabitants in the winter season but as many as 14,000 in summer, pushing electricity consumption to 5,500 kWh/year. This is generated burning more than 10 million litres of diesel each year at a cost of over 1 euro a litre. With a hybrid system and thanks to the solar installation, fuel consumption is expected to fall by

more than 7 million litres a year: that translates into 10.5 million euros a year of cost savings and 20,725 metric tons of CO2 emission reductions.

The project is not only economically advantageous but also has the advantage that it could be replicated elsewhere. That represents a huge potential and opportunity for a country like Italy and many others besides. During the conference, in fact, a partnership was announced between So.fi.p and GHP to build similar projects on the other islands where the utility operates.

management of water treatment plants. SOPES expertise is organised so as to provide all the services to complete the whole cycle of a project, particularly in the areas of applied economics and resource planning in terms of development. More specifically, the company deals with the different stages of a project, from the identification (i.e. the selection of projects which can contribute to fulfil specific objectives in the development of an area) to the preparation (i.e. economic, technical and financial analysis of the most interesting proposals) and from the evaluation through some cost-benefit analyses in accordance with the conventional standard used by international Organisations when funding development projects up to the implementation. The latter is further divided into operational design, production of documents to participate in tenders, contract award, technical supervision, accounting, inspection services, management and maintenance of the works involved. The SOPES team has long experience of design, supervision of construction of waterworks and land-reclamation works as well as considerable competence in the management and maintenance of irrigation networks and in integrated engineering services for the realisation and management of sea-water desalination plants, sharing a great deal of its professional expertise with the "Ing.
