olor is a critical aspect of brand awareness. When it comes to global brands like Mentos, Airheads, Chupa Chups, Fruttella, Alpenliebe, and many others, consistency is the best way to portray quality on shelves around the world. Perfetti Van Melle (PVM) is an Italian manufacturer of confectionery and gum with corporate headquarters in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. They employ 17,800 in 38 operating companies and 30 manufacturing facilities around the world. The group is specialized in many regional brands with innovative local flavors, and its global brands are distributed to 150 countries around the world. “X-Rite solutions have helped us be more pragmatic about color quality and management. Thanks to eXact measurement devices and NetProfiler software, we have been able to dramatically reduce color deviation and objectively rank each single printing supplier. Now all of them are clearly aware of our expectations and via ColorCert we can continue to improve brand color consistency. We are really very satisfied about the outcomes and we are confident to go ahead successfully on our brand color con-
sistency strategy”, says Angelo Mazzacani, Packaging Production Director at Selection – Perfetti Van Melle. THE CHALLENGE TO FACE PVM contracts suppliers around the globe to print their brand designs using 4-color CMYK and Pantone spot colors. Since their final packaging includes a mix of materials like labels, foil, paper, paperboard, and shrink, each printer must achieve accurate color on every substrate to portray a unified brand presence on the shelf. For years, PVM evaluated packaging color when it arrived from the printer, adding weeks to the approval cycle and if the color was not correct and the process was expensive. PVM knew they had to set up a better way to implement their color management strategy to improve consistency and help printers take ownership of quality. THE SOLUTION After choosing X-Rite as their exclusive color management supplier, PVM took a twostep approach to align the supply chain. First, they standardized their instrumentation. They selected the X-Rite eXact, a spectropho-

tometer specifically designed for print and packaging applications, and distributed them to 21 operating companies around the globe to validate the color of CMYK and spot-color inks. They also installed NetProfiler, a cloud-based blend of software and color standards, to verify and optimize performance and reduce variance between measurement devices used by PVM. Instead of internally checking color tolerance once the packaging has been produced, PVM now requires all their printer and converters to measure color at the start, if possible throughout, and at the end of the production process and compare it against approved brand color targets. If color is out of tolerance, the packaging is not shipped. Next, they developed a print quality program. They installed ColorCert pressroom tools at Selection, Perfetti Van Melle pre-media company that does all PVM’s brand color separations, RAW designs, and graphics. With ColorCert, they can set targets for CMYK, PMS, PVM colors and over-printed colors directly in each job for real-time process control. They also installed ColorCert scorecard server at their quality control centers around the world
to track and report finished print quality and identify areas for improvement. Each single printed order is evaluated for quality at the inbound stage. Now PVM quality control specialists use eXact to measure and compare against the same color targets to confirm accuracy, then upload the values into ColorCert and generate a shareable scorecard. Soon PVM will require their suppliers to upload their own data into ColorCert, further streamlining the process. THE RESULTS Since implementing X-Rite services and solutions, PVM can trust their packaging color and easily evaluate every SKU to find trends and areas of improvement. Building a stronger partnership with their suppliers has improved color quality and saved them a tremendous amount of time. Preliminary results on 10% of their total amount of printed articles show that PVM expectations are defined very clearly and a 40% improvement in color deviation has been obtained. In 2020, PVM plans to extend the system to all global print suppliers and significantly increase the total number of SKUs.
