As part of our commitment to creating meaningful stories that promote the human good, we’re bringing invigorating genres, beyond those we are more known for, to existing and new partners while elevating the local drama production scene. This is evident in our action-packed series, Incognito. We’re constantly opening up new opportunities for our stories to reach even more viewers, by forging mutually beneficial partnerships and getting more of our dramas adapted in the region. This year, we are also putting a stronger focus on our internationallyrecognized game shows, which we believe have the universal appeal and makings of the next big hit.”

Pia Laurel, Sales Head, OTT and Co-production

Since 1953, ABS-CBN has been a premiere source of high-quality Filipino content and primarily involved in high caliber productions for television, online and over-the-top platforms, cable, satellite, cinema, events and radio, for both domestic and international markets. ABS-CBN’s road to transformation provided not only strong affinity with the local audiences, but also agility in going global, with 60,000+ hours sold worldwide in over 50 territories.

Genres

We have everything from FTV-ready romance and family dramas to exciting action and thriller series, both in long form and compressed 20-hour formats. We’re also building our non-scripted IP slate, adding in the recent winner from MIPFormats Pitch 2025: physical game show Save Your Cash to join our other awardwinning game show Everybody, Sing!

Original production/ co-production

Our new action series INCOGNITO – first seen on Netflix Philippines – has been at the top since its launch. It delves into the lives of seven disillusioned people who unite to engage in high-stakes missions. We pulled out all the stops for this drama, with the powerhouse cast training in martial arts, tactical combat and war games to properly portray the relevant expertise on screen – set against breathtaking shooting locations around Italy, Japan and of course, picturesque Philippines.

SAVING GRACE, our adaptation of Nippon TV’s Mother; launched on Prime Video months before TV release, the drama explores the complexities of motherhood when a school teacher whisks away an abused student in an effort to save her. Our version emphasizes strong familial and community ties central to Filipino culture. As a result, a rich, cross-cultural viewing experience awaits our international audiences. The special 14-episode edit exclusive to the platform also topped the charts.

Our newest co-prod. with Viu, HOW TO SPOT A RED FLAG, just ended its run this February. The romcom follows a spunky barista torn between a quirky nice guy and a confident bad boy who are both catfishing her. Marking the two companies’ 2nd project together, the series touches on youth-oriented insights into topics like the “talking stage” and “ghosting”, while tackling real lessons on cheating and how genuine relationships blossom.

Supernatural horror feature film project HYSTERIA, winner of the ATF x EST N8 Horror Pitch 2024 in Singapore, tells the story of a self-righteous priest seeking to end a wave of demonic possessions in a town trapped in its own contradictory beliefs, only to uncover a dark past and his own role in the dreadful phenomenon. We are currently looking for co-producers for this latest IP.

Half Man will be the iconic scripted show to watch out for in 2025. It is a six-episode drama series from the multi award-winning Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer, Against the Law), who stars alongside BAFTA award-winning actor Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers, Rocket Man) with the pair playing estranged brothers. The series is produced by Mam Tor Productions (a Banijay UK company) for the BBC and BBC Scotland in co-production with HBO.

Our factual slate is led by Tribe with Bruce Parry, in which TV, filmmaker and indigenous rights advocate Bruce Parry returns to TV after more than a decade. In this new three part series, he travels to visit extraordinary communities, diving deep into their traditional ways of life – including a rare glimpse of the world’s last megalithic culture, The Sumba in Indonesia. The series is produced by Frank Films for BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.

In our format slate, AI Love You – created and produced by Banijay Nordic label Nordisk Film TV, Denmark for TV 2, seamlessly integrates the much talked about AI tech in a deeply emotional human scenario via a life affirming social experiment.

Trends & Outlook 2025

In 2025, we will witness media businesses looking at hybrid models to explore additional revenue streams. Shorter holdback windows for second screen rights will become the norm with key TV shows coming onto a third-party digital platform within hours of premier broadcasting. There is no doubt that there will be an increase in adopting AI across productions which will form an integral part of new format innovations.

Trends & Outlook 2025

2024 was a turbulent year for the TV industry, and it will be no surprise to see the same in 2025 with potentially more M&A and over-supply of content due to fewer buyers. We may see more co-productions as producers are de-risking investment by sharing rights among partners in different regions. Additional consolidation in the streaming sector is also possible, as the number of SVOD services in each country is expected to peak with some trying to stay afloat.”

Asia focus in 2025

To address all those challenges, we have already expanded into scripted format licensing last year. In addition to formats, we own, we helped broker 3rd party format for our Chinese producers. Our company is also taking a lead in a tripartite co-production that involves partners from Europe and Asia on a new scripted project. We value the importance of our traditional distribution business, but we also see the importance of diversification so we will be creative and innovative, not just in production, but how we operate our business in Asia.”

Trends & Outlook

In 2025, I anticipate three transformative trends shaping the Asian media landscape. First, international co-productions will gain momentum, fostering innovative cross-cultural storytelling and expanding market reach. Second, strategic intellectual property ownership will be paramount as content becomes an increasingly valuable asset, ensuring sustainable competitive advantages. Finally, the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence is revolutionizing content creation – driving the rise of vertical, mobile-first formats and further solidifying the trend toward short-form content, which has already made significant inroads this year.

Whatever debt it still carries and however much pressure it remains under five years after losing its broadcast franchise, ABS-CBN continues to mount a magnificent defence of its corner of the Philippines video entertainment market.

The effort – including previously unthinkable alliances – has given rise to a slate of killer titles, including last year’s record-breaking movie Hello, Love, Again, which, at ₱1.6 billion/US$28.6 million worldwide, is now the country’s highest grossing movie of all time.

A first-of-its-kind collaboration between ABS-CBN Studios, Star Cinema and GMA Pictures, Hello, Love, Again is among a growing catalogue of shows born into (and perhaps because of) the Philippines’ dramatically re-shaped entertainment landscape in the past five years.

The newish-found peace between media giants ABS-CBN and GMA, forged in the aftermath of the licence fiasco of 2020, seems to be holding. In March 2025, the two celebrated the 20th anniversary of Pinoy Big Brother in the Philippines with a special celebrity edition. The companies called the new project yet “another ground-breaking collaboration”.

There are others: It’s Showtime, ABSCBN’s popular noontime variety show, began airing on GMA’s secondary

channel, GTV, in July 2023. moving to GMA’s main channel in April 2024. 2023 drama series, Unbreak My Heart, was coproduced by GMA Network, ABS-CBN’s Dreamscape Entertainment and Hong Kong-based regional streaming platform Viu. The star-studded cast was plucked from both networks, including Jodi Sta. Maria, Richard Yap, Joshua Garcia and Gabbi Garcia. The series aired on GMA and streamed on Viu across 15 territories.

Perhaps the most ironic new alliance is the one that put ABS-CBN content back on the channel 2 broadcast frequency that it fought so hard to keep and lost in

2020 during the Duterte administration. Exactly a year ago, in April 2024, ABSCBN Corporation and Advanced Media Broadcasting System (AMBS) announced a partnership that expanded the reach of ABS-CBN TV properties – including news and current affairs flagship, TV Patrol – on AMBS’s Alltv. The agreement kicked in on May 2024 and was seen as something of a homecoming for ABSCBN, which having been forced to vacate the channel two slot, watched from the sidelines as the frequency was given to the politically and commercially powerful Villar family’s AMBS.

Incognito, ABS-CBN Studios

Philippines

SUBSCRIPTION TV

If Cignal is the sexiest subscription TV story in the Philippines for its sheer size and leadership position, the bloodiest story is all about ABS-CBN’s SkyCable. The platform, victim of ABS-CBN’s forced exit from broadcasting in 2020, was brought back from the almost-dead in early 2024 – five days before it was scheduled to go dark.

The whole story is complicated and winding, but ultimately telco/media giant PLDT decided not to go ahead with its ₱6.75-billion/US$123-million acquisition of Sky’s broadband business and related assets. The deal was announced in March 2023. A condition of the original sale was that Sky’s pay-TV/cable business – one of the region’s oldest pay-TV platforms – was terminated. The agreement turned Sky into a dedicated internet service provider.

Although all the regulatory clearances were secured, speculation is that the companies could not agree on final closing conditions. Insiders at the time did not rule out political maneouvring, which has its roots in the 2020 refusal to renew ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise and is said to have scuppered multiple efforts to realign the local landscape.

A year later, the SkyCable issue is a headline writer’s gift that keeps on giving.

In April 2025, ABS-CBN said the massively discounted equipment sale to Dennis Anthony Uy’s Converge affiliate, Reliance Broadcasting Unlimited, was just that – the sale of equipment it no longer needed. The equipment, valued at ₱3.1 billion/US$54.9 million, was acquired by Uy for US$7.5 million, meaning an impairment loss of US$47.6 million from the 2024 sale. This was in addition to ABS-CBN’s US$42.5 million write-down in 2023 as part of Sky Cable’s financial restructuring. Explaining its logic to the Philippines Stock Exchange after a local news platform flagged the write down, ABS-CBN said that the idle assets were “mainly equipment and infrastructure from Sky Cable’s now-defunct direct-tohome (DTH) satellite TV business, which shut down after the non-renewal of its franchise”. Will that make the speculation about Uy driving a SkyCable comeback go away? Probably not. And who knows, it might turn out to be true.

FILM

Philippines’ box office for 2025 has been a handful (if that) of highs but mostly lows. According to Box Office Mojo, gross box office for 2025 to end April is just US$8 million. That’s not terrible compared to the same four months in 2024, but it has sounded an alert for a possible dive from last year’s total US$45.5 million and 2023’s US$47 million. The best year on record was 2015, when gross box office hit US$157.4 million.

Recent highs are led by Again (2024), which became the highest-grossing Philippines’ film of all time at ₱1.6 billion/US$28.6 million worldwide, followed by a March 2025 peak with domestic romcom, Love Will Make You Disappear.

The Philippines’ 2025 weekend box office rankings (as of 27 April) were topped by Captain Ameri ca: Brave New World lion gross, 12-16 Feb) followed by My Love Will Make You Disappear (US$1.07 million, 26-30 March), produced by ABS-CBN Film Productions and distributed by Star Cin ema. The two titles were the only films that have crossed the US$1-million gross box of fice mark by end April 2025.

My Love Will Make You Disappear stars Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino in their first big-screen pro ject after TV blockbust ers Linlang and What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim Directed by Chad V. Vidanes, the film is about a woman who believes she is cursed. Her life takes a turn when she meets a man who sees her curse as an escape from his own troubles. Box office hopes for June ride on Star Cinema/Corner stone Studio’s Only We Know, starring Dingdong Dantes and Charo Santos-Concio.

The 75-year-old GMA operates a network of 115 TV stations and 21 radio stations throughout the country. Also known as the Kapuso Network, GMA brings entertainment, news and information through its TV, radio, online platforms and wide array of other media-related ventures: programme syndication, film production, music publishing and distribution, set design, audio-visual production and new media. Using Nielsen TV Audience Measurement data, GMA Network says its services reach 93% (67 million viewers) of people in the Philippines. GMA also says it had 45.5 billion video views across Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube in 2024.

GMA moves into 2025 in a good place; for one, the Philippines mid-term elections in May 2025 have driven advertising revenues. But political advertising is not the whole reason the broadcaster reported a “sterling” first quarter overall. Regular customers are also back and helping to push a 29% jump in ad revenue for the first three months of 2025 to ₱4,338.63 million/US$77.5 million compared to the same quarter in 2024. Net income for the first three months of 2025

was ₱800.84 million – 294% up on 2024. TV rating-wise, flagship GMA-7’s line up is topped by long-running Sunday primetime show, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. GMA’s second free-to-air channel, Good TV (GTV), isn’t faring as well, and two Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) stations –Heart of Asia and I Heart Movies – are steady but not stellar.
