We have everything from FTV-ready romance and family dramas to exciting action and thriller series, both in long form and compressed 20-hour formats. We’re also building our non-scripted IP slate, adding in the recent winner from MIPFormats Pitch 2025: physical game show Save Your Cash to join our other awardwinning game show Everybody, Sing!

Original production/ co-production

Our new action series INCOGNITO – first seen on Netflix Philippines – has been at the top since its launch. It delves into the lives of seven disillusioned people who unite to engage in high-stakes missions. We pulled out all the stops for this drama, with the powerhouse cast training in martial arts, tactical combat and war games to properly portray the relevant expertise on screen – set against breathtaking shooting locations around Italy, Japan and of course, picturesque Philippines.

SAVING GRACE, our adaptation of Nippon TV’s Mother; launched on Prime Video months before TV release, the drama explores the complexities of motherhood when a school teacher whisks away an abused student in an effort to save her. Our version emphasizes strong familial and community ties central to Filipino culture. As a result, a rich, cross-cultural viewing experience awaits our international audiences. The special 14-episode edit exclusive to the platform also topped the charts.

Our newest co-prod. with Viu, HOW TO SPOT A RED FLAG, just ended its run this February. The romcom follows a spunky barista torn between a quirky nice guy and a confident bad boy who are both catfishing her. Marking the two companies’ 2nd project together, the series touches on youth-oriented insights into topics like the “talking stage” and “ghosting”, while tackling real lessons on cheating and how genuine relationships blossom.

Supernatural horror feature film project HYSTERIA, winner of the ATF x EST N8 Horror Pitch 2024 in Singapore, tells the story of a self-righteous priest seeking to end a wave of demonic possessions in a town trapped in its own contradictory beliefs, only to uncover a dark past and his own role in the dreadful phenomenon. We are currently looking for co-producers for this latest IP.

Highlights include The Traitors, with local adaptations coming soon in both India and Mongolia and with further territories to be announced. Our scripted formats are also gaining traction, including a Malaysian adaptation of the romantic comedy Step Dave, originally created by New Zealand based producer, South Pacific Pictures. • Movie: AR spearheads the Rocket Programme, a strategic movie co-development initiative uniting film companies from Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia. Supported by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and organised in partnership with MyStory Entertainment, the programme aims to drive six co-produced film projects from script stage through to market-ready pitches at TCCF 2025.

• Variety: AR and Taiwan’s TAICCA launched the LEAP Co-Development Programme: Variety Show, attracting 85 submissions and featuring eight top Korean producers. It concluded with a final pitch at ATF 2024 in Singapore. A regional co-production is set for 2025, with AR executive producing alongside Culinary Class War writer Mo Eun-seol.

• Pre-school animation: AR launched the All Star Pre-School Animated Series Creative and Co-Development Programme with Taiwan’s PTS XS to connect Korean and Taiwanese creators for co-productions. Two projects were selected and have entered development with leading Korean animation companies.

Pinoy Big Brother Season 12 is continuing the leadership trend for us in the Philippines and has become a successful collaboration with GMA and our long-term partners ABS-CBN.

We have recently concluded Puzzle Masters Season 8 in China and Season 9 will go into production next year.

Our finished content also has local flavour added with shows including Jeremy Pang’s Hong Kong Kitchen and Leave No Trace that both focusing and showcasing Asian territories.

Half Man will be the iconic scripted show to watch out for in 2025. It is a six-episode drama series from the multi award-winning Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer, Against the Law), who stars alongside BAFTA award-winning actor Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers, Rocket Man) with the pair playing estranged brothers. The series is produced by Mam Tor Productions (a Banijay UK company) for the BBC and BBC Scotland in co-production with HBO.

Our factual slate is led by Tribe with Bruce Parry, in which TV, filmmaker and indigenous rights advocate Bruce Parry returns to TV after more than a decade. In this new three part series, he travels to visit extraordinary communities, diving deep into their traditional ways of life – including a rare glimpse of the world’s last megalithic culture, The Sumba in Indonesia. The series is produced by Frank Films for BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.

In our format slate, AI Love You – created and produced by Banijay Nordic label Nordisk Film TV, Denmark for TV 2, seamlessly integrates the much talked about AI tech in a deeply emotional human scenario via a life affirming social experiment.

Trends & Outlook 2025

In 2025, we will witness media businesses looking at hybrid models to explore additional revenue streams. Shorter holdback windows for second screen rights will become the norm with key TV shows coming onto a third-party digital platform within hours of premier broadcasting. There is no doubt that there will be an increase in adopting AI across productions which will form an integral part of new format innovations.

2024 was a turbulent year for the TV industry, and it will be no surprise to see the same in 2025 with potentially more M&A and over-supply of content due to fewer buyers. We may see more co-productions as producers are de-risking investment by sharing rights among partners in different regions. Additional consolidation in the streaming sector is also possible, as the number of SVOD services in each country is expected to peak with some trying to stay afloat.”

To address all those challenges, we have already expanded into scripted format licensing last year. In addition to formats, we own, we helped broker 3rd party format for our Chinese producers. Our company is also taking a lead in a tripartite co-production that involves partners from Europe and Asia on a new scripted project. We value the importance of our traditional distribution business, but we also see the importance of diversification so we will be creative and innovative, not just in production, but how we operate our business in Asia.”

Channel/service

CTE offers all forms of ondemand rights across all linear channels. In addition, it has launched a SVOD Chinese Movies streaming app, CMGO, since August 2024 and the app is now available across all major platforms and telcos in Singapore and Malaysia. Other Southeast Asian market launches to follow.

Content strategy

Most of CTE’s content comes from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, along with all Pay TV and Digital rights. Fresh content offering in 2026 looks to be at least 200 titles. Local original production in Asia is also one of the directions that CTE is exploring in 2026.

The joint projects/content alliances we’re watching most closely for 2025/6 include:

• International acquisitions for scripted adventure series, Lost and Found, Singapore’s first scripted collaboration with Japanese pubcaster NHK. The six-episode series is scheduled to air on NHK and on Mediacorp in March 2026.

Along with Korea, Japan is Asia’s co-production/co-development partner of the moment for two main reasons – money and will. The country’s video entertainment sector is characterised by its determination to evolve from being the home of mega-budget docs and zany entertainment clips that can, with lots of work, be transformed into global IP, to diversified commercially oriented models, with rising deal flow from private producers, independents, distributors and digital platforms. This shift broadens revenue streams, enhances scalability and improves margin profiles as global attention for premium Asian IP expands.

Japanese producers are by no means starting from scratch, although co-development ambitions with global brands have ballooned as the country’s homegrown live-action TV dramas struggle to gain an international foothold.

• Whether Japan’s TBS Holdings and Vietnam’s national broadcaster, Viet Nam Television, follow up on their aim to co-develop IP for Asia/international markets. The pair also have ambitions for more Vietnamese versions of TBS dramas, and in Sept 2025, announced the revival of TBS’ sports entertainment show Sasuke as Không Giới Hạn – Sasuke Việt Nam. And while we have eyes on TBS, we’re also looking for updates on the May 2024 collab between Korea’s CJ ENM and TBS; the three-year co-pro deal is supposed to produce five titles for global distribution.

• How many of the Japanese unscripted formats on global catalogues actually get picked up and made. These include Japan-Korea co-development 100 with Banijay Entertainment; Ants, created and produced by Nippon TV and further developed by Fremantle North America; and Lovers or Liars?, co-developed by TBS and All3Media.

• Scripted adaptation rights are always

on our radar. Nippon TV’s Mother leads, with 11 international versions so far.

• Changes in the international appetite for Japanese scripted series, which right now is pretty much zero other than anime, adaptations and Alice in Borderland

From January to end June this year, anime series Sakamoto Days was the sole Japanese title on the top 100 titles on Netflix’s What We Watched global list (1H 2025). The story of a hitman who retires in the name of love only to have his past catch up with him ranked #33. Alice in Borderland season one was at #125. Netflix is the sole streamer that offers credible visibility into show performance.

Even in Asia, Japanese titles on Netflix are not chart-toppers. This year’s exceptions were Sakamoto Days (which was #1 in the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam), and, more recently, the third season of Alice in Borderland

The feeling seems to be mutual. At home, Japanese streaming audiences are the most resistant in Asia to regional/ international content, according to our analysis of Netflix’s weekly top 10 rankings. The four non-Japanese series that made it to #1 on Netflix Japan’s weekly TV top 10 from January to end September 2025 were all Korean – Squid Game seasons two and three, Weak Hero and Bon Appétit, Your Majesty. That’s nine out of 39 weeks. Mutual indeed.

Asahi Television Broadcasting Corporation (ABC TV)

Asahi Television Broadcasting Corporation (ABC TV) is a regional broadcaster headquartered in Osaka and a key affiliate of the All-Nippon News Network (ANN). Established in 2017 through the restructuring of the Asahi Broadcasting Group, ABC TV provides news, dramas, variety shows, and anime, serving primarily the Kansai region while also contributing content to the ANN national network.

Chugoku Broadcasting Corporation (RCC)

Based in Hiroshima and launched in 1951, RCC serves the Chugoku region with local news, sports, and cultural programming. As a JNN/TBS affiliate, it blends community-focused shows with national content.

Fuji Television

Commercial broadcaster Fuji Television’s (founded in 1957, on air from 1959) operations span terrestrial and satellite (BS/ CS) TV, radio, streaming, content production, gaming, publishing and global content sales. Fuji TV is best-known internationally for Hole in the Wall and Iron Chef. Recent global titles include Heart Attack, a live-action sci-fi drama co-produced with Skybound Entertainment, with Cineflix Rights handling international distribution. In 2025, the network implemented major executive changes following a high-profile scandal. New president Kenji Shimizu is leading a broad reform agenda.

GTV (Gunma Television)

GTV (Gunma Television) is a local terrestrial broadcaster serving Gunma Prefecture since 1971. It operates as an independent station within the Japanese Association of Independent Television Stations (JAITS) and carries a mix of communityfocused content along with anime, syndicated shows, and entertainment programming from national networks.

KBS Kyoto

(Kyoto Broadcasting System)

Founded in 1951, KBS Kyoto began as a radio station and launched its TV service in 1969. KBS balances communityfocused shows such as regional news, cultural highlights, and tourism features, with syndicated content and independent variety formats.

NHK

NHK (founded 1926) operates two terrestrial TV channels – General TV and Educational TV (NHK E). On satellite, NHK broadcasts BS 1 (live news / sports), and BS Premium (culture / entertainment). NHK also offers BS 4K and BS 8K. NHK runs three radio services. NHK is funded by license fees, providing international services like NHK World TV, NHK World Premium, and NHK World Radio Japan.

Nippon TV

Nippon TV fully owns nearly 90% of its content IP and has been actively bringing its content to the international market through anime, finished programmes, formats and co-production partnerships. The company has been producing anime series since the 1950s and acquired the iconic Studio Ghibli in 2023. Internationally, Nippon TV is best known for hit formats such as Dragons’ Den/Shark Tank, Mother and Old Enough!. New formats include scripted series The Hot Spot, and game show Ants

Shizuoka Broadcasting System (SBS)

Established in 1958, SBS operates in Shizuoka Prefecture and offers a blend of local and national programming. The network features news, entertainment, variety shows, and regional cultural content, plus popular national series.

SUN TV (Sun Television)

Founded in 1969 and based in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, SUN TV delivers Kansaifocused programming including Hanshin Tigers baseball, local news, sport, and select anime, blending community content with syndicated and independent shows.

Television Saitama (Teletama)

Launched in 1979, Television Saitama (Teletama) is a regional broadcaster serving Saitama Prefecture, including the city of Saitama. As an independent station, it focuses on locally relevant programming, offering comprehensive coverage of regional sports, particularly J.League football featuring the Urawa Red Diamonds, and community-centric talk shows that engage with local issues and culture. The station operates on digital channel 32.

Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS)

Founded in 1951, TBS is a major Japanese commercial broadcaster delivering news, entertainment, variety shows and dramas across terrestrial and satellite channels. TBS is internationally recognised for original formats like Sasuke and Takeshi’s Castle, which have been adapted worldwide. The network continues to expand its global footprint through co-productions and content sales, supported by its new production hub, The Factory, designed to create high-end, internationalstandard programming. Recent initiatives include Love is for the Dogs, a co-production with Korea’s Studio Dragon; this prime-time drama series premiered on TBS in July this year, streamed on TVING in Korea and internationally on Max.

Tokyo MX

(Tokyo Metropolitan Television)

Founded in 1995, Tokyo MX is a prominent independent broadcaster based in Tokyo. It offers a diverse array of programming, including original talk shows, anime series, indie music content and coverage of Tokyo Metropolitan Government news. Tokyo MX is widely accessible beyond Tokyo through cable and satellite platforms.

TV Asahi

TV Asahi Corporation (founded in November 1957 as Nippon Educational Television) launched in Feb 1959. The terrestrial station shifted from educational to general entertainment in 1973. The group also operates BS and CS satellite channels, and is part of the Asahi Shimbun Company group, which also owns Toei Company, a producer and distributor of movies, TV dramas, and animation. Inter-

nationally, TV Asahi is known for anime series such as Doraemon and Crayon Shinchan. The broadcaster also produces variety programming, including 2025 talent competition, SONG vs DANCE, which pits singers against dancers.

TV Tokyo

Established in 1964 as Science TV Tokyo Channel 12, TV Tokyo is a major Japanese television broadcaster based in Tokyo. It operates terrestrial, BS and CS television services, along with online and mobile content platforms, and claims a nationwide reach of approximately 70% across Japan. The lineup includes a mix of mass-market general entertainment content, with a particular focus on anime. TV Tokyo airs Pokémon, Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh!, holding broadcast and coproduction rights that allow it to benefit from merchandising and distribution.

TVK (Television Kanagawa)

Founded in 1972, TVK is a regional broadcaster serving Kanagawa Prefecture, including Yokohama and the surrounding areas. The network offers a mix of locally focused television programming, with an emphasis on cultural shows, music programmes and local sports. TVK combines community-centered content with independent variety formats, reflecting the interests and identity of its regional audience.

Pay TV

Hikari-TV

Launched in March 2008, Hikari-TV is an IPTV service operated by NTT’s Plala subsidiary, Icast. It offers around 100 linear channels including HD, karaoke, and shopping, and tens of thousands of VOD titles. Monthly subscriptions range from ¥1,100/US$7.50 to ¥3,850/US$26 depending on the package and promotions. Hikari-TV is accessible via set-top boxes, compatible smart TVs and the Hikari-TV Dokodemo mobile app.

J:Com

Founded in 1995 as Jupiter Telecommunications, J:COM offers cable TV, high-speed internet, telephony, mobile services and electricity. As of April 2025,

it has approx 3.76 million cable TV subscribing homes. The cable TV service includes around 90 channels, VOD/4K access via J:Com On Demand and Milplus, plus BS/CS thematic channels.

Sky PerfecTV!

Operated by Sky Perfect JSAT (est. 1994), Sky PerfecTV! is Japan’s satellite-based multi-channel pay-TV service, delivering over 240+ TV and radio channels across tiered packages. The basic plan starts at ¥429/US$2.90 per month and is delivered via satellite and fiber-optic networks.

Wowow

Founded in 1984, WOWOW is a satellite pay-TV provider offering three full-HD channels: Wowow Prime (drama/movies), Wowow Live (sports/events), and Wowow Cinema (films) plus on demand platform Wowow Members On Demand. As of April 2025, it has approx 2.35 million subscribers.

Streaming/Online

Abema

Launched in April 2016; co-owned by CyberAgent and TV Asahi. ABEMA operates 24/7 internet-delivered channels offered under a freemium (ad-supported + subscription) model. The platform has a vast on-demand library, spanning anime, news, sports and entertainment. standard subscription costs approx ¥960/ US$6.50 a month with no contract.

DAZN Japan

Sports platform DAZN Japan launched in 2016, offering domestic and international sports events. Prices range from ¥980/US$6.70 a month for select global content and ¥2,300/US$15.70 a month for baseball packages, to ¥3,700/US$25 a month for the full standard plan, with annual options also available. DAZN Japan acquired exclusive rights to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, and J. League rights through 2033.

Disney+ Japan

Disney+ Japan debuted in June 2020 in an alliance with NTT Docomo. The platform offers over 16,000 titles, including

Japan-exclusive originals. Monthly subscriptions start at ¥1,140/US$7.70.

DMM TV

DMM TV is operated by DMM.com LLC and offers a range of content, including anime, dramas, movies and variety shows. Launched in 2022, it provides free and subscription-based access, with a monthly fee of ¥550/US$3.70 for premium content, available through DMM Premium membership.

Fuji TV on Demand (FOD)

The multimedia streaming service of commercial broadcaster Fuji TV, offering over 80,000 videos, including original series, live TV channels and digital e-books/manga comics. The platform provides a free, geo-blocked version with limited content, and a premium subscription at ¥976/US$6.60 a month for full access.

Hikari TV Video

Hikari TV Video launched in 2008, offering a range of live channels and on-demand content, including movies, dramas and variety shows. Features include rental options, recording and mobile viewing through dedicated apps.

Hulu Japan

Owned by Nippon Television Network Corporation, Hulu Japan launched in September 2011. The line-up includes international and domestic movies, dramas and anime targeting Japan. Rates are ¥1,026/US$7 a month.

Lemino

Operated by NTT Docomo, Lemino offers approx 180,000 titles, including anime, dramas, movies and music. Launched in 2011 as “d-market Video Store”, the AVOD platform rebranded to dTV in 2015 and to Lemino in April 2023. Ad-free subscription costs ¥990/US$6.70 a month.

Netflix Japan

Netflix launched in Japan on 2 September 2015, ahead of its global rollout in January 2016. Netflix continues to expand its slate of Japanese originals, celebrating its 10th anniversary by announcing three new series – STEEL BALL RUN JoJo’s Bizarre

NHK on Demand / NHK Plus

NHK on Demand is a VOD service provided by Japan’s public broadcaster, offering documentaries, dramas and educational programmes. Subscribers can access episodes or entire series for a fee. NHK Plus is a free catch-up service of NHK’s terrestrial programmes.

OceanVeil

Launched in March 2025 by WWWave Corp., OceanVeil targets global anime audiences, offering both general and mature content streams, with a focus on anime series and films for international viewers. Titles include romantic comedy Makina-san’s a Love Bot?!, and BL series I Have No Money!.

Prime Video Japan

Amazon debuted Prime Video in Japan in September 2015, offering a multigenre original production slate. Recent titles include Yakuza-inspired crime drama Like a Dragon: Yakuza, Takeshi Kitano’s Broken Rage, and l Marry My Husband: Japan. Annual membership costs ¥5,900/US$40; monthly is ¥600/US$4.

Rakuten TV

Rakuten TV (formerly Rakuten ShowTime) provides a library of over 200,000 titles, including Japanese and international dramas, movies, animation and sports. Subscriptions from ¥220/US$1.49 a month.

Spoox

Spoox is Sky Perfect JSAT’s geo-blocked streaming service, offering live sports, music performances, movies, drama, variety shows and anime. Premium subscription costs ¥990/US$6.70 a month.

Telasa

Telasa is a joint streaming service launched in April 2020 by TV Asahi (50%) and KDDI (50%), providing local, regional, and international content, including movies, dramas, anime, and music. Subscriptions cost ¥618/US$4.20 a month.

TV Tokyo On Demand

TV Tokyo On Demand offers catch-up access to recently aired shows for free up to one week post-broadcast, alongside subscription-based services like TV Tokyo Biz On Demand for business and news content at ¥550/US$3.70 a month Operated by TXCOM, the company manages multiple digital formats, including AR/VOD content.

TVer

TVer (est. 2015) is an ad-supported, free catch-up portal operated by five major Japanese broadcasters – Nippon TV, TV Asahi, TBS, TV Tokyo and Fuji TV. The platform offers shows up to one week after airing.

U-Next

U-Next, originally launched as GyaO Next in 2007, acquired Paravi in mid-2023 to form Japan’s largest domestic SVOD platform. The aggressive growth strategy includes the first-of-its-kind global original with TBS and The Seven; Japanese sword-action period series Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem is scheduled to air/ stream in Spring 2026. The service had approx 4.5 million paid subscribers at the end of 2024 and offers about 400,000 titles, including foreign dramas, movies, anime, sports, manga, and digital magazines. Subscription plans range from ¥990/ US$6.70 to ¥2,189/US$14.80 a month.

Video Market

Video Market, established in 2005, is a geo-blocked streaming service providing over 250,000 local and international titles. Premium subscriptions range from ¥550/US$3.70 to ¥1,078/US$7.30 per month for unlimited content.

Regulators/ Associations

Association of All Japan TV Program Production Companies (ATP) Launched in 1982, ATP represents over 100 indie production companies. It promotes collaboration with broadcasters, nurtures new creative talent and advocates for industry standards.

BEAJ

The Broadcast Program Export Association of Japan (BEAJ) is an industry body established in 2013 to promote the international distribution and visibility of Japanese television content, ranging from dramas and documentaries to anime and variety shows. Supported by Japan’s major broadcasters, production houses and government-linked initiatives, BEAJ works to expand overseas markets through trade fairs, screenings, co-production partnerships, and promotional campaigns. By acting as a bridge between Japanese rights holders and international buyers, BEAJ aims to strengthen the global presence of Japanese programming and enhance the country’s cultural and media influence abroad.

Cable and Telecommunications Association (JCTA)

Established in 1980, JCTA is the industry body for Japan’s cable television operators. It promotes ethical practices, supports the development and popularisation of cable TV, provides training and research, and helps members adapt to new services such as broadband, mobile (MVNO), and local 5G.

Broadcasters Association (JBA)

Founded in 1951 and restructured in 2012, the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (JBA) is a non-profit body representing 207 commercial TV and radio broadcasters. It promotes broadcasting ethics, supports public welfare, coordinates industry standards, conducts research on programming and technology, and serves as a liaison with government and parliament.

Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC)

Established in 2001, MIC oversees local government, elections, telecommunications, broadcasting, and postal services in Japan. In the ICT sector, it leads digital transformation initiatives, including 5G, AI, cybersecurity, and ICT literacy, while promoting international collaboration and industry development.
