PRZECIĄŻENIE

Once we have believed that we have everything and can do anything, and wanting more – both surrounding us objects and interpersonal interactions – is a main principle, we’ve became an overloaded, self-sufficient deserted island.

Gdy wreszcie uwierzyliśmy, że mamy wszystko i możemy wszystko, a chcieć więcej jest naszą naczelną zasadą (zarówno w kontekście do otaczających nas przedmiotów jak i relacji międzyludzkich) staliśmy się przeładowaną, samowystarczalną, bezludną wyspą.

We question everything. We create new scenarios, choose undiscovered paths and we lose ourselves in them. We have taught ourselves not to talk, conform, learn, live in a group and collaborate. Overload of data and information caused us to stop challenging their credibility.

Our memory and nervous system are not used to those fast and constant. We have lost the ability to predict and project the future, we are tangled in the present, that becomes a myth.

Messages that we exchange are becoming meaningless, are simply an empty slogans that refer to non-existent values. Unconsciously, we scroll endless ‘latest’ information when our life becomes a tv series.

We live in unrealistic, filtered world, where we often produce meaningless content ourselves; where under the post ‘I’m ill’ there are likes, no genuine reaction from ‘friends’.

‘Overload’ exhibition is a collection of critical projects, talking about social phenomenon, some sort of a self-examination that represents our modern approach to life.

We are tired, numb and irritated by the multitude of stimuli; as if our internal system just crashed. We can’t predict or plan, we’re lost in surrounding signals and loose a sense of touch. Is overload an actual mistake, or maybe a natural element of the process?

Kwestionujemy wszystko. Tworząc nowe scenariusze wybieramy niewybrane jeszcze ścieżki i - gubimy się na nich. Oduczyliśmy się rozmawiać, dostosowywać, uczyć, żyć w grupie i współdziałać. Przesyt danych i informacji spowodował, że przestaliśmy sprawdzać ich wiarygodność.

Nasza pamięć i układ nerwowy nie są dostosowane do tak szybkich i ciągłych zmian. Straciliśmy umiejętność przewidywania i projektowania przyszłości, a zaplątaliśmy się w teraźniejszości, która staje się mitem.

Komunikaty którymi się wymieniamy nie niosą już znaczenia - są jedynie pustymi sloganami odnoszącymi się często do nie istniejących już wartości. Mimowolnie scrollujemy nieskończone ilości „najnowszych” informacji, gdy nasze życie staje się serialem. Żyjemy w odrealnionym, przefiltrowanym świecie, w którym sami wielokrotnie tworzymy nieznaczący kontent; świecie, w którym pod hasłem „choruje” pojawiają się polubienia i brak realnej reakcji „przyjaciół”.

Wystawa Overload/Przeciążenie jest zbiorem krytycznych projektów, mówiących o zachodzących zjawiskach społecznych, stając się tym samym swoistym „rachunkiem sumienia”, prezentującym nasze współczesne podejście do życia.

Przez mnogość bodźców jesteśmy zmęczeni, znieczuleni i rozdrażnieni jednocześnie; jakby nasz wewnętrzny system się zawiesił. Nie umiemy przewidywać i planować, gubimy się w otaczających nas sygnałach i zatracamy zmysł dotyku. Czy przeładowanie jest rzeczywistym błędem, a może naturalnym elementem procesu?

Dorota Stępniak Member of Program of Board Gdynia Design Days 2018. Curator and manager of events in a creative industries sector. Author of numerous texts, journalist, juror and conference moderator. She currently works for the International Design Center (IDZ) in Berlin and as a lecturer at the VIAMODA University in Warsaw. The originator, curator and manager of Łódź Design Festival, associated with the event until 2010. The creator of the O! To Design project. She was the head of the FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland until 2014 and as a project manager at the International Festival of Photography – Fotofestival and Łódź Biennale. As an international expert, she participated in the Made project in CEE in Budapest. Curator of the Design Space conference in DCK and exhibitions: “Obecność”, “Contemporary Polish Design Exhibition”for Designer’s Open Festival Lipsk, and “Body” – organized as a part of the Wroclaw European Capital of Culture in 2016. Her authorial column „Strong Backs”, devoted to art and design in a subjective edition, appears in the Design Alive magazine.

Członek Rady Programowej Gdynia Design Days 2018. Kurator i menadżer wydarzeń w sektorze przemysłów kreatywnych. Autorka licznych tekstów, dziennikarka, jurorka i moderator konferencji.

Obecnie pracuje dla Międzynarodowego Centrum Designu (IDZ) w Berlinie i wykłada w Szkole Wyższej VIAMODA w Warszawie.

Pomysłodawca, kurator i menedżer Łódź Design Festival, związana z wydarzeniem do 2010 roku.

Twórczyni projektu O!to Design.

Była kierownikiem operacyjnym FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland do 2014 oraz project managerem w ramach takich wydarzeń jak: Międzynarodowy Festiwal Fotografii – Fotofestiwal oraz Łódź Biennale. Jako międzynarodowy ekspert uczestniczyła w projekcie Made in CEE w Budapeszcie.

Kurator konferencji Design Space w DCK i wystaw: „Obecność” i „Contemporary Polish Design Exhibition” dla Designer’s Open Festival w Lipsku oraz „Body” – organizowanej w ramach Projektu Wrocław Europejską Stolicą Kultury 2016. Jej autorska rubryka „Mocne Plecy” poświęcona sztuce i projektowaniu w subiektywnym wydaniu ukazuje się w Magazynie Design Alive.

Chih Chiu is a designer from Taiwan, interested in relationship and interaction between a human, technology and society.

His speculative research leads to creative and intriguing experiences introducing alternative world, where the audience can introspect on what is better.

Chih Chiu jest projektantem z Taiwanu zainteresowanym relacją i wpływami pomiędzy człowiekiem, technologią i społeczeństwem. Jego spekulatywne poszukiwania prowadzą do kreatywnych i intrygujących doznań przedstawiając alternatywny świat, w którym odbiorca może dokonać introspekcji tego co lepsze.

Stella Y. Shen transfers critical social and anthropic issues of domestic technology into functional objects for everyday use. These objects compel to meditate on certain issues, as well as personal interaction with materials and form.

The world is saturated with technology. Predominant belief is that technology is always going to be in our lives. It lacks reflection on the consequences of these changes and its traps, especially ones projecting onto mental health.

We are addicted to technology consumption and belief, that it can solve our problems. Loop of Technology is a methodology of technology development. Phenomenon that shows negative impact of technology on humans, who have to be treated with newly designed technology. That, essentially, creates a vicious circle between technology and syndrome. Mixed Reality phone merges smartphone with virtual and augmented reality, enabling the user to configure his own, perfect world. Mixed Reality Phone is a beginning of a loop, an endless consequence.

Świat jest nasycony technologią - dominującym przeświadczeniem jest, że pozostanie ona na zawsze w naszym życiu.

Brakuje jednak refleksji nad konsekwencjami i pułapkami tej zmiany, zwłaszcza dla naszego zdrowia psychicznego.

Jesteśmy uzależnieni od konsumpcji technologicznej i przekonania, że ​​może ona stanowić rozwiązanie naszych problemów. Loop of Technology to metodologia rozwoju technologii.

Zjawisko pokazuje negatywny wpływ systemu na ludzi, których leczy się za pomocą nowo zaprojektowanych urządzeń, co tworzy nieskończoną pętlę między technologią a syndromem. Telefon Mixed Reality, łączy smartfona, wirtualną i rozszerzoną rzeczywistość, umożliwiając użytkownikowi skonfigurowanie własnego idealnego świata w telefonie. You’re sitting on the tube and you’re reaching for your smartphone within first seconds of boredom, or because someone next to you got a message.

Substitute phone re-enacts as a regular smartphone, but his functions are limited to movements that we make hundred times a day. Stone beads, that are integrated into the main body, enable you to scroll, zoom in or swipe.

It doesn’t have any digital functions. Its therapeutic limitation offers help to smartphone addicts to cope with withdrawal symptoms.

Siedzisz w metrze i chwytasz smartfona przy pierwszych oznakach nudy lub dlatego, że osoba obok ciebie właśnie otrzymała wiadomość. Telefon zastępczy odtwarza przecietnego smartfona, jednak jego funkcje są zredukowane do ruchów, które robimy setki razy dziennie. Kamienne paciorki wbudowane w korpus umożliwiają przewijanie, powiększanie i przesuwanie. Nie ma funkcji cyfrowych, to terapeutyczne ograniczenie oferuje pomoc osobom uzależnionym od smartfona, by mogły poradzić sobie z objawami odstawienia.

Klemens Schillinger Klemens Schillinger is a product and furniture designer based in Vienna, Austria. His goal is to create simple, but well thought-out objects, design methods and DIY tutorials (DIY – Do It Yourself). It leads to almost obvious product solutions with a minimal amount of charm and use of materials and poetic accent.

Klemens Schillinger jest pracującym w Wiedniu projektantem produktów i mebli. Jego celem jest opracowanie prostych, ale dobrze przemyślanych obiektów, metod projektowania oraz przepisów DIY (ang. zrób to sam). Prowadzi to do niemal oczywistych rozwiązań produktowych ze szczyptą uroku i materiałami wzbogaconymi poetyckim akcentem.

Fotografia jest również bardzo nowoczesna, ponieważ pozwala zaaranżować iluzję w czasie i przestrzeni.

At the same time, photography is very modern, because it allows to arrange illusion in time and space.

Yao Lu, artist born in Beijing, brings together his painting and photography skills to embody Chinese past and present, often as a commentary on dramatic consequences of fast industrialisation.

Yao Lu, artysta urodzony w Pekinie łączy w swoich pracach umiejętności malarskiej i fotograficzne reprezentując chińską przeszłość i teraźniejszość często komentując dramatyczne konsekwencje szybkiej industrializacji.

The pieces describe modern China in relations to the traditions of Chinese painting. Even though the times are so much different, universality is in photography. Photographs can be very traditional when it comes to recording the history and moving back to the past. At the same time, photography is very modern, because it allows to arrange illusion in time and space. It can be both realistic and unrealistic.

Prace opisują współczesne Chiny w odniesieniu do tradycyjnego malarstwa tego regionu. Chociaż współczesność jest inna, powszechność opiera się na fotografii. Fotografia może być bardzo tradycyjna, jeśli chodzi o zapisywanie historii i powrót do przeszłości. Fotografia jest również bardzo nowoczesna, ponieważ pozwala zaaranżować iluzję w czasie i przestrzeni. Może być ona zarówno rzeczywista, jak i nierzeczywista.

Will we look through contact lenses one day and they will change the picture and overwrite reality through self-perception? The project explores the psychological mechanism, which manifests itself in the way that we look at our own photos and combines it with the perspective of perceiving us by outsiders. Data was collected by eye movement tracking device and then quantitative analysis of the results was carried out. Project is complemented by a collection of interviews with portrayed people, allowing them to become familiar with their thoughts during the experiment.

Czy pewnego dnia spojrzymy przez soczewki kontaktowe, które będą zmieniać obraz nadpisując rzeczywistość dzięki samo-postrzeganiu? Projekt bada psychologiczny mechanizm, który ujawnia się w sposobie patrzenia na własne zdjęcia i zestawia go z perspektywą postrzegania nas przez osoby postronne. Dane zebrano wykorzystując urządzenie do śledzenia wzroku, a następnie przeprowadzono analizę ilościową wyniku.

Projekt uzupełniony jest o zbiór wywiadów sportretowanych osób, pozwalających zapoznać się z ich myślami w trakcie eksperymentu.

Ryan Mario Yasin, through joining art with engineering, he strives to create an internal dialogue between the idealist and the realist.

The combination of these worlds allows for an innovative and creative thinking, while ensuring tangible results. After completing his studies at the aviation engineering department at the Imperial College in London, Ryan started his Master’s degree at Royal College of Art.

Ryan Mario Yasin, poprzez połączenie sztuki i inżynierii dąży do stworzenia wewnętrznego dialogu między idealistą a realistą. Zestawienie tych światów pozwala na innowacyjne i kreatywne myślenie, przy jednoczesnym zapewnieniu namacalnych rezultatów.

Po ukończeniu studiów na wydziale inżynierii lotniczej w Imperial College w Londynie, Ryan rozpoczął studia magisterskie w Royal College of Art.

Ziv Schneider is a new media artist, working on new technologies in non-fiction. Co-founder of Raycaster, student design studio that mainly focuses on research and experimental, authentic storytelling and cultural preservation.

Caitlin Robinson is a storyteller and an entertainment strategist. She worked in film industry in India. Caitlin runs her own VR and AR production company in South Africa to stimulate progression of storytelling skills.

Ziv Schneider, jest artystką nowych mediów pracującą nad nowymi technologiami w non -fiction. Jest współzałożycielem Raycastera, studenckiego studia projektowego zajmującego się badaniami i eksperymentalnym pisaniem autentycznych opowiadań oraz utrwaleniem kultury.

Half of all the residents of Manahattan, New York, now live by themselves. It is the only period in human history that the number of single occupant households is so large. The project represents incomplete archive of the moment.

Each portrait is printed in 3D and is a shell protecting private histories of its inhabitants – small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, is a tangible version of a life in progress. Collection is inspired by works of Zygmunt Bauman, who believed that change is the only constant.

Połowa mieszkańców Manhattanu w stanie Nowy Jork żyje teraz sama. Jest to pierwszy okres w historii ludzkości, gdy mówimy o tak dużej skali jednoosobowych gospodarstw domowych.

Projekt reprezentuje niekompletne archiwum chwili. Każdy portret drukowany w 3D, to skorupa skrywająca prywatne historie jej mieszkańców - wystarczająco mała, aby zmieścić się w dłoni, jest namacalną wersją życia w zmianie. Kolekcja zainspirowana pracą Zygmunta Baumana, który uważał, że zmiana jest jedyną stałą.

Caitlin Robinson to storyteller i strategiem rozrywki. Pracowała w branży filmowej w Indiach. Caitlin prowadzi produkcję VR i AR w Południowej Afryce stymulując rozwój umiejętności opowiadania.

‘Sometimes I miss my childhood, when I could concentrate and devote myself completely to reality, that I was in’. Very popular phenomenon in Japan, called Inemuri, inspired the project ‘Offline in the city’. It is a phenomenon of napping in public places – underground, bus, shopping centre.

Microvan Piaggio Porter is especially equipped project that enables to charge our batteries through the ‘power nap’ or meditations in secluded space. It is an encouragement to meet with your own thoughts in the city jungle.

„Czasem tęsknię za dzieciństwem, gdy potrafiłem się koncentrować, oddawać w pełni rzeczywistości, w której byłem.” Inemuri - popularne w Japonii zjawisko powszechnego drzemania w przestrzeniach publicznych: metrze, autobusie, centrum handlowym stało się inspiracją do projektu „Offline w Mieście”.

Specjalnie wyposażony Microvan Piaggio Porter jest projektem umożliwiającym naładowanie naszych baterii poprzez drzemkę - power nap (ang. drzemka) bądź medytację w odosobnieniu; jest zachetą do próby spotkania z własnymi myślami w miejskiej dżungli.

Dawid Zalesky was born and raised in a small village of Kiezliny in Warmian area, currently lives in Warsaw. He was always interested in meditation and mindfulness, especially in the context of omnipresent stress and social commitments.

In everyday life, he is a creative director, web designer, director and scenographer.

Agnieszka Łańko, Patryk Żurawski, Gabriela Kalecińska and Michał Sokołowski (ctrl+n and PL Studio) focus their work on bringing out the character of a place or an object. From the concept through to production, they pay particular attention to the quality and tiniest details.

Dawid Zalesky wychował się we wsi Kiezliny na Warmii, obecnie mieszka w Warszawie. Zawsze interesowało go zjawisko medytacji czy mindfulness, szczególnie w kontekście wszechogarniającego stresu i społecznych zobowiązań. Na co dzień działa jako dyrektor kreatywny, web designer, reżyser, scenograf.

Agnieszka Łańko, Patryk Żurawski, Gabriela Kalecińska i Michał Sokołowski (ctrl+n oraz PL Studio) w swojej pracy skupiają się na wydobyciu charakteru miejsca lub przedmiotu. Od koncepcji po realizację przykładają dużą wagę do jakości oraz najdrobniejszych detali.

MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) are military combat rations provided to soldiers in the field of duty.

Due to their unappetising taste they have earned a nickname ‘Meals Rejected by Everyone’. In this project the meals were reinvented and served on a plate. In essence, taking ‘the worst’ food and serving it to the bravest people as they would be served in one of the world’s most reputable restaurant with Michelin-stars.

MRE (Meals Ready to Eat – ang. posiłki gotowe do spożycia) to wojskowe racje bojowe dla żołnierzy przebywających w terenie. Ze względu na ich nieapetyczny smak zasłużyły sobie na pseudonim „posiłki odrzucone przez wszystkich” (ang.

Meals Rejected by Everyone). W ramach projektu przeobrażono je ponownie w dania serwowane na talerzu. W istocie opierając się na „najgorszym” jedzeniu dostarczanym do najodważniejszych ludzi zaserwowano je, jakby było podawane w jednej z najbardziej szanowanych restauracji na świecie odznaczonej gwiazdką Michelin.

Hybrid creation is a manifesto of today’s flowers, that are entirely designed.

The project was created in cooperation with the engineer, who specialises in genetic manipulation of flowers – flower engineer – and is a combination of most desirable features of the plant. The effect is shown on three-dimensional print presenting fictional plant characterised by high resistance in the process of shipment and over a year of color durability. The project questions the industry’s use of the nature as a product at the mercy of the consumers.

Swiss architect Le Corbusier coined the phrase ‘machines for living’ in his book ‘Towards an Architecture’ in 1923. Archisutra is a design manual that contains data essential to select sex positions with indexed drawings and descriptions. Sex plays a huge role in society and everyday life. So why is it so often overlooked when architect is designing a building? Archisutra follows on from the work of Vitruvius, da Vinci and Le Corbusier and suggests that buildings should be designed around human life. Sex is still a taboo and as such is is not considered when a building is being designed, which undercuts healthy sex life.

Archisutra to podręcznik projektowy zawierający dane niezbędne do wyboru pozycji seksualnych za pomocą skatalogowanych rysunków i opisów. Seks odgrywa dużą rolę w społeczeństwie i życiu codziennym.

Dlaczego więc tak często pomijany jest, gdy architekt projektuje budynek?

Archisutra wywodzi się z dzieł Witruwiusza, da Vinci i Le Corbusiera, i sugeruje, że budynki powinny być zaprojektowane wokół ludzkiego życia. Seks jest nadal tematem tabu i jako taki nie jest brany pod uwagę przy projektowaniu budynku, co hamuje zdrowe życie seksualne.

Miguel Bolivar is an architectural designer from United Kingdom. He has worked on a vast number of projects on a variety of scales at his practice in London. Miguel aims to encourage a discussion on the topic of lifestyle with his clients, without hesitating to cross the boundaries. He believes that home should be designed around human body, its form and everyday life.

The project studies the way of using an everyday object, ‘the chair’ - morphology, use, function, structure and interaction with the user. Rational and irrational uses, humanisation of the object, theories in relation to the space and practical exercises that teach how to work with the body, if the object doesn’t exist. Function is important when creating an object. The function is maintained, but the shape changes.

Projekt to analiza użycia obiektu codziennego jakim jest krzesło - morfologia, wykorzystanie, funkcja, struktura i interakcja z użytkownikiem oraz racjonalne i irracjonalne zastosowania, humanizacja obiektu, teorie w odniesieniu do przestrzeni i praktyczne ćwiczenia uczące jak pracować z ciałem gdy obiekt nie istnieje.

Po prostu funkcja jest ważna, gdy tworzysz obiekt. Funkcja zostaje zachowana, ale kształt się zmienia.

Experimental video was created based on research about ‘Rotoscope’ and ‘Computer Geometry’.

Rotoscope is known as an traditional technique for creating animation invented in 1905 by Max Fleischer in which animators traced the actors outline over live-action film to make a realistic cartoon.

Through research, we rediscovered and developed this technique from a new point of view, by extracting various information, not just outline, from a live film and created experimental films since 2003. In ‘Ballet Rotoscope’, by extracting the movement of a dancing ballerina, we created a animation of locus drawn in the air. The geometric figures were created by connecting the movement of ballerina’s joints by using algorithm of computer geometry. Our aim was to represent a complete new type of beauty, by showing the interaction of abstract animation with realistic movements and documentary film.

Eksperymentalne wideo stworzone na podstawie badań nad „Rotoskopem” i „Geometrią Komputerową”. Wymyślone w 1905 r. przez Maxa Fleischera urządzenie pozwala stworzyć animację opartą na śledzeniu zarysu sylwetki aktora w czasie jego rzeczywistego ruchu w filmie.

Poszukując nowego spojrzenia na tę tradycyjną metodę i wzbogacając ją o dodatkowe informacje tworzymy filmy od 2003 r.

W „Ballet Rotoscope” po wydobyciu ruchu tańczącej baleriny stworzono animację umiejscawiającą rysunek w powietrzu.

Figury powstały przez zestawienie ruchu stawów baleriny i algorytmu komputerowej geometrii. Celem animacji jest przedstawienie zupełnie nowego rodzaju piękna, pokazując interakcję abstrakcyjnej animacji z realistycznymi ruchami i filmem dokumentalnym.

Euphrates is a creative group based in Tokyo.

Founded by the graduates of Masahiko Sato Laboratory at Keio University in 2005. They develop new modes of expression and media design based on research and experiments, through the work in video, animation, publication, exhibitions and graphic design. Members of the creative group are: Kohji Robert Yamamoto, Tomoko Kaizuka, Mio Ueta, Masashi Sato, Masaya Ishikawa, Hirofumi Yonemoto.

PRZECIĄŻONA JAŹŃ PROTEUSZA

The end of September 2011 seemed to be the worst moment for a debut of a new product. Nevertheless, Steve Jobs decided to launch iPod just days after World Trade Centre terrorist attack. Not many people believed in its success, the device was very expensive and the market was dominated by cheaper competition. Jobs, however, was right. iPod, over time, crushed cheaper rivals.

Why? There’s no single reason for that, but design, introduced over time iTunes, marketing had an impact on it. Anthropologists point to one more aspect. The distinctive feature of an iPod from the first models, was its hard drive that could store music collection from the owner’s entire life. Bull’s eye, right when the most certain became the most fickle – self.

In 1991, American psychologist Kenneth J. Gergen introduced a concept of saturated self, arguing that the growing number of communication stimuli leads to self-overloading and necessity of active building by individuals. Let’s not forget that he wrote about it before the Internet and smartphones.

As a result, as another scholar, Robert J. Lifton argues, we have become Proteuses who are constantly changing their identities.

But how do you keep a relationship with yourself from your childhood, youth, future jobs and places that you will live in in a situation of an overload? For most of us, the medium of a memory is music, writers consciously refer to band names to unlock emotions associated with a specific period of time. Jobs found a perfect packaging for that medium – iPod as an identity prosthesis.

But it’s only that, whatever we name it. It helps to cope with an overload without removing neither its causes, nor its results. And these are, as Gergen predicted, wide-ranging and disturbing. Like the phobia of commitment, deep aversion to go into lasting relationships based on commitments.

As an overloaded Proteus, we are barely able to live in harmony with ourselves, even less able to form lasting relationships with others.

Koniec września 2001 r. wydawał się być najgorszym momentem na debiut nowego produktu. Steve Jobs jednak zdecydował się na inaugurację iPoda kilkanaście dni po zamachu na World Trade Center. Mało kto wierzył w sukces, urządzenie było bardzo drogie, a rynek opanowała tańsza konkurencja. Jobs miał jednak rację, iPod z czasem wygniótł tańszych rywali. Dlaczego?

Nie ma jednej przyczyny, znaczenie miał design, wprowadzony z czasem serwis iTunes i marketing. Antropologowie wskazują na jeszcze jeden aspekt. Cechą wyróżniającą iPoda był twardy dysk - już w pierwszych modelach umożliwiający zgromadzenie na urządzeniu kolekcji muzyki z całego życia właściciela. Strzał w dziesiątkę w czasach, kiedy najmniej pewne stało się to, co wydawało się najpewniejsze - jaźń.

W 1991 r. amerykański psycholog Kenneth J. Gergen wprowadził pojęcie nasyconej jaźni przekonując, że rosnąca liczba bodźców komunikacyjnych (pamiętajmy, pisał to jeszcze przed internetem i smartfonami) prowadzi do przeciążenia jaźni i konieczności jej aktywnego konstruowania przez jednostki. W efekcie, jak napisał inny uczony, Robert J. Lifton, staliśmy się Proteuszami ciągle zmieniającymi swoją tożsamość.

Jak jednak w sytuacji przeciążenia zachować więź z samym sobą z okresu dzieciństwa, młodości, kolejnych miejsc pracy i miejsc zamieszkania? Dla większości nośnikiem pamięci jest muzyka, pisarze świadomie odwołują się do nazw zespołów, by wyzwolić emocje związane z konkretnym czasem. Jobs znalazł dla tego nośnika doskonałe opakowanie, iPoda w roli protezy tożsamości.

Proteza jest jednak tylko protezą, jakkolwiek by się nazywała. Pomaga radzić sobie z przeciążeniem nie usuwając ani jego przyczyn, ani jego skutków. A te są, jak przewidywał Gergen, dalekosiężne i niepokojące. Jak choćby commitment fobia, głęboka niechęć do wchodzenia w trwałe relacje oparte na zobowiązaniach.

Jako przeciążeni Proteusze od biedy jesteśmy w stanie żyć w zgodzie z samymi sobą, gorzej o trwałość zgodnych relacji z innymi.
