KNOW WHAT YOU’RE BUYING
When it comes to buying art, the choice is vast. Often you won’t know what you’re looking for until you see it but having made the decision to buy there is plenty to consider - should you buy an original piece of art or go for a limited-edition print for example. Understanding art-world terminology is a good place to start. There are so many motivations that move us to buying a piece of art so having a mental checklist of priorities is essential. Be it the enthusiasm of the artist, the sheer aesthetic nature of the piece or simply which wall you want to fill. Understanding what you are buying in terms of medium is important, but the bottom line is let yourself fall in love and be carried away. Original pieces of art are exactly as stated – they are one of a kind but do not have to cost a fortune. The price tags for such pieces will depend on the artists’ artistic standing, their reputation in the art world as well as material costs. Owning an original piece of art whether it be from an up and coming or established artist can give you a thrill as you have the honour of taking just a little piece of that artist’s soul home with you. As a statement piece that wows viewers or something small and detailed that means something special to you, buying an original is special. The smorgasbord of types of original art include painting: acrylic, oil, watercolour, mixed media, pen and ink, pencil moving onto the more textured work of textile art, resin and collage. So often the mediums’ qualities enhance the subject matter. An original print is a work of art created and printed by hand, by the artist from a plate, block, stone, or stencil that has been hand created for the sole purpose of producing the desired image. The plates or stencils often bear no resemblance to the finished work of art, which means it is not a copy or a reproduction of anything. The image reverses in the printing process so the artist has to think and draw backwards. Each print produced is technically a unique work although produced as a signed and numbered multiple. Traditionally each print is numbered as a fraction and signed in pencil. Original print mediums fall into three main types - etching, screen printing and lithography.
4
A giclee or digital print is a reproduction of a painting, photograph, drawing, etc. and is the process of printing with pigment inks to produce the highest quality art prints. The edition may be limited and is sometimes signed in pencil by the artist. Some artists create giclées of their original work which is a much more affordable way of owning an image from their portfolio. Then there’s the very tempting choice of 3D artwork to consider. Sculpture, ceramics and glasswork. You will find some of these pieces are editioned depending on how they have been produced. Ask the artist or gallerist to explain the creative process to understand how a piece came about. You will find a number of photographers at the fair displaying stunning work in a wide range of subject matter, techniques and presentation. Most amateur photographers use cameras to document events and memories without artistic motivation whereas a distinguishing feature of fine art photography is that recording a subject is only part of the story. These artists use photography as a means to express their vision and style. Fine art photography uses high quality conservation papers and traditional printing processes like silver gelatine and platinum whereas today some print digitally using conservation inks and paper. Edition sizes tend to be small for fine art photography and larger for digital work. If you are buying an editioned piece of work do make sure the artist has signed and numbered it. Know your space, consider scale and colour but don’t forget the art you pick should outlast décor trends. Bear in mind where the piece will be hung such as direct sunlight or humidity. How about a piece of glass or ceramic for the bathroom. The right piece of artwork can add life to a room, express your personality and bring you lifelong pleasure. We feel sure you will find something you just won’t be able to leave without.
GIFT VOUCHERS for ART LOVERS You’d like to buy them a piece of art but choosing is so subjective and you might get it wrong! Fear not we have the answer.

Fraser loves abstract in all it’s forms but Digital Geometric, Hard Edge, 3D and Minimalist are what fascinates Fraser the most. Colour field plays a huge part in experimentation & creation. Focusing on sharp lines, three dimensional shapes and multi layered optical illusions, Fraser prepares his visions digitally, before transferring these creations to ‘one-off’ original pieces. Fraser prefers acrylic paints on canvas, birch-ply or aluminium surfaces when creating his linear-geometric abstracts. There needs to be an edge to this work, whether that be using gradients, texture or subtleties in the colour. For linear works that are resin coated, this extra element protects the finished pieces from moisture, heat and physical stress. When creating sculptured tactile Geomesh Art, Fraser hand moulds aluminium mesh that has been precision sprayed with acrylics & varnish, creating a colour changing landscape of possibility. The synergy when merging with Fraser‘s geometrics, can create some stunning results! Fraser’s goals are to conceptualise, capture and design new and enticing art that delivers a capacity to create fascination, evoke deep thought through beauty as well as engage great emotion and distill mood for the viewers.
