EDITOR’S COMMENT

A

s I sit here and ‘enjoy’ another four hours of loadshedding, I wonder how long this loadshedding situation is going to last, and what negative impact it is going to have on our country? I suppose we have already lived through this, and it is by no means something we can’t overcome again. However, somehow this seems worse than it was the last time round. The one good thing is there is a loadshedding schedule that seems quite accurate, so you can work around it. However, having Stage 4 loadshedding takes us to a new level of power outages. Being out for four hours at a time, and sometimes twice a day, is quite frankly ridiculous. South Africans have grit and endurance, so this will definitely not get us down. From a personal perspective, the first step is to invest in an inverter, deep cycle batteries and solar power. This is something we are definitely looking at as we really don’t want to be left in the dark ages. Most convention centres, venues,

hotels and shopping centres in general are already equipped to deal with this situation thanks to the last bout of loadshedding that hit our country a few years ago. So, in actual fact, it is mostly business as usual for the business events sector. It really shouldn’t have a major impact on conferences, exhibitions, etc., though it really isn’t ideal. We are certainly living in interesting times because between the blackouts we have political party campaigning happening around us. The elections are only a few months away, and this situation isn’t doing our current government any favours. I suppose the test will be how they see us through this challenging time. My concern is more how we as an industry are dealing with the messaging to the international stage. We can’t exactly act like it isn’t happening, but we need to have a clear message on the loadshedding situation. We can definitely learn a lot from the drought situation and how the Western Cape overcame the negative and made it a positive example for others to follow.

Loadshedding won’t keep us in the dark

South Africans have grit and endurance, so loadshedding will definitely not get us down. This is when the business events industry needs to come together and ensure we have one clear message for this situation. As an industry, we should be looking at doing a campaign that can counter any negative implications. Let’s learn from this and set the example. South Africa is open for business and loadshedding won’t keep us in the dark.

NEWS

Cape Town Air Access drives growth The Cape Town Air Access (CTAA) project, a division of Wesgro, recently provided a review of 2018, while looking at opportunities for the upcoming year.

F

orming the focal point for proactive international air route development in Cape Town and the Western Cape, the initiative has launched 13 new routes and facilitated 19 route expansions since their inception in 2015. This has doubled seat capacity at Cape Town International Airport, adding 1.5 million two-way seats to the Cape Town network, contributing an estimated R6 billion in direct tourism spend since July 2015. Wesgro chief executive officer, Tim Harris, highlighted how collaborating to grow air connectivity is happening around South Africa, with the CTAA team actively engaging with Johannesburg’s Oliver Tambo International Airport and Nelson Mandela Bay to see how a similar model can be implemented to boost air connectivity to these provinces. In terms of route development, facilitating new, and expanding on existing routes in Africa will remain a key theme, with the initiative actively in the process of looking to develop a direct flight between North America and Cape Town International Airport. “Air Access has shown excellent results in creating new routes and growing the numbers of people coming into the Western Cape. By creating direct routes and making it easier to access the province, Air Access also plays an important role in developing trade relations and growing tourism. Going forward, we will continue to focus on developing new routes, especially across Africa, and exploring the potential for growing cargo further which will help to further grow our economy and create new jobs,” commented Minister of Economic Opportunities, Beverly Schäfer. “We have seen excellent results from the air access programme. Air connectivity is critical to our region, and is key to boosting tourism and investment. The airport is gearing up for its expansion to meet the current demand. Thank you to all airlines for choosing Cape Town. Together we look forward to enabling more routes into our region,” concluded Deon Cloete, general manager of Cape Town International Airport.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE PAST YEAR INCLUDED: • Three new airlines added to the Cape Town network: RwandAir, Austrian Airlines, and Cathay Pacific; • Four new destinations added: Kigali, Harare, Vienna, and Hong Kong; • CTAA awarded Best Destination Marketing Award and overall Route Africa award at Routes Africa 2018; • CTAA awarded highly commended award in the Destination Marketing category at World Routes 2018; • The initiative hosted the AviaDev Africa 2018 conference which welcomed 172 route development representatives from 29 countries, including representatives from 23 airlines.

he commercial areas upgraded included the reception, patio, Siphuza Bar and Epsom Restaurant. This part of the hotel dates back to 1952, and the designers and architects worked hard to ensure the upgrade embraced the history of the ‘grand old lady’, incorporating much of the existing country style architecture while maximising space and light; and bringing the hotel into a more modern era ensuring a better guest experience. The newly-appointed commercial area now has a spacious reception and seamless flow to the 300-seater Epsom Restaurant and outdoor deck, incorporating the Courtyard Bar. New additions include three executive suites, three junior suites and the very popular Indaba Gin School supported by Inverroche. Rob Mickel, director of the Indaba Group of Hotels, said: “Everyone has fond memories of the Indaba Hotel, with

many people having celebrated a special occasion with us over the years – we really are part of the Fourways history. “With the recent development in Fourways, we decided to upgrade and improve facilities, while still maintaining the country look and feel and ‘Mein Host’ hospitality for which the Indaba Hotel Fourways is renowned. “Further extensions to our Mowana Spa with a dedicated pedicure deck will also be completed in March, and current bathroom upgrades in our ninth block family and queen twin deluxe rooms are well under way. “We call it our 20/20 Vision, with all upgrades and improvements to be completed by the beginning of 2020,” Mr Mickel concluded.

Epsom concept Indaba Hotel has worked around new ‘mini brand within the Epsom Restaurant called Bistro 407. This is based on the history of the Indaba Hotel being located on Lot 407 of the original farm, Zevenfontein. The larger Epsom Restaurant will be synonymous with our buffet breakfasts and conference buffet lunches, while the Bistro 407 will be a smaller, more intimate “high touch” bistro / grill house within the restaurant, open for dinner: a la carte and showcase/ degustation/ wine pairing dinners etc. The hotel also has a new outdoor upper deck for alfresco dining and a private dining room (Prive), which seats 12.

Advancing Africa together Shared Economies

-When shared mind come together, we advance Africa In 2019 there was a specific focus on regionalisation as a continental strategy, and how this enhances the positioning and value offering for the business events industry in Africa.

Connect to one of the fastest growing and exciting business destinations in the world, when blossoming growing global economies and shared minds unite. Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo, Chief Convention Bureau Officer of the South Africa National Convention Bureau:

“A

frica came out in full force to support and showcase what business events is about on the African continent. The show’s success comes from its regionalisation, ensuring a focus on the African continent, with the largest number of African exhibitors under one roof showcasing themselves to global and local buyers. Hosting the show over two days ensures that it has high impact with a streamlined networking system. Meetings Africa 2019 enhanced the collaboration between African countries and African associations so as to create more shared economic benefits for the continent’s business events sector. It is about co-operating first and then competing. This makes the African industry stronger and better, with an increased economic impact.

Success lies in the numbers and this year we had the biggest representation of African countries exhibiting and a total of 65 countries were represented by buyers. There was a definite ‘magic’ on the floor. Increased interest from buyers is testament to the growth of the business events industry in Africa in recent years. The show’s further success lies in its maturity. Meetings Africa provides a conducive environment to do business. As it grows year on year, we constantly improve on the hosted buyer programme and the diary system to make sure that we drive return on investment (ROI), so participants really see the value. We put a high premium on ROI for both exhibitors and buyers. Africa is ready to host business events and together, really advance Africa together.”

Exhibitor feedback Other African countries Amrita Craig, marketer at Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority

Our general impression of the show is that it was well organised. However, it is important to have a list of buyers from Africa two months before the event.”

Rosabelle Fanny, Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa

“This is the first time we participated in Meetings Africa. Our focus is to develop the MICE sector and tap the potential of the African market. It was an opportunity to meet buyers from Europe, and we had some queries and leads. We barely met buyers from Africa, which was the main reason we participated in this fair, so we were unable to build our African network. There were good buyers in general. We aren’t sure if we will exhibit again next year, as it all depends on whether it is a platform for African buyers, as this is our main target. We are already present on MICE platforms in Europe. We are going to see if we get business out of this meeting, then will decide.

For me, Meetings Africa is the ideal trade show for MICE, as hosted buyers know what they are looking for. It was my first time attending the show, and I am very satisfied. The appointments scheduled were good ones, and now I definitely need to follow up closely to get the business to materialise.”

Samantha Bronkhorst and Melissa McKay, Air Mauritius “Meetings Africa proved to be fruitful for Air Mauritius in terms of additional group potential and SADC opportunities. We were also introduced to several new agencies that we may be able to do business with.”

Kezy Mukiri, Zuri Events, Kenya

I attended Meetings Africa for the first time in 2019 and was completely blown away by the extensive potential and capacity of the meetings industry on the African Continent. The event was well organised, and I was able to connect easily with various PCOs, DMCs, convention venues and event suppliers from all the different countries that my company is currently doing business in or hoping to expand to. As a PCO, I left Meetings Africa having built exciting new relationships and networks that will definitely enhance the work that we are currently doing in Sustainable Event Management across East Africa. I would definitely recommend the event to others and I will definitely be back!

Yoadan Tilahun, managing director and chief executive officer of Flawless Events, Ethiopia “This was the first year I exhibited. I attended in 2017 as hosted buyer. From exhibiting in 2019, we have leads on incentives and conferences but nothing is confirmed, and won’t be confirmed for a while. Hosted buyers are shopping amongst various destinations so we won’t know the benefit for at least another six months to one year. It was good to see familiar industry colleagues, network and discuss the African market. It’s also been good to get our name out there and market Ethiopia as an ideal location. The quality of hosted buyers was okay, but there weren’t as many as expected or marketed. I’m not sure if we will exhibit again. We need to be present as a country rather than individual companies, so we have to lobby our government to engage at a higher level. If this is the case, we will participate again.”

Visitor feedback

“Meetings Africa was the perfect platform to launch my business to the industry. It gave me the opportunity to make suppliers, industry stakeholders and potential clients aware of who Events Et Cetera is, and the role we plan to play in the business events industry. We had a total of 12 appointments on the 26th, and more than half were real associations with real conferences that we had the opportunity to quote for. It was a similar case on the 27th, where we had 10 appointments, half of which were healthy leads. I felt that the buyers were well vetted, and were people who were either in decision-making

“Meetings Africa is a great platform to drive our MICE strategy at ATKV Resorts. It is a wonderful opportunity that brings sellers and buyers together. Ever since our new company positioning within the business events space, our commitment at Meetings Africa has strengthened. We managed to secure a great international MICE group from this show in the past. The event will be taking place later this year, so we are truly proud of this benefit as an organisation. Solid business leads were generated. I genuinely feel the buyers were of a higher quality than in previous years. I will definitely be back next year. It fits our strategy like a hand in a glove.”

Hosted buyer feedback

Magdy Ibrahim, managing director of Smart Solutions Consultants, United Arab Emirates “To me, 2019 was the most successful round for Meeting

Africa, and by far the best in Africa. It was rich in the number and variety of exhibitors, and at same time worked as an international travel market – I met travel and MICE professionals from all over the world. It is the same as when I visit IMEX or IBTM World, but it was much better in hospitality, taking care of small details, and the variety of pre- and post-tours which introduce the real country and real product richness and variety to buyers. I am planning to attend Meeting Africa again because it is the right hub for MICE industry in Africa.”

Heather Dow, association manager of Events & Management Plus Inc, Canada “Meetings Africa is a great way to expand your depth and

breadth of knowledge and bring your events to exciting new destinations. Meetings Africa is the number one trade show for networking, gaining industry insights, and learning about new destinations in South Africa! I really appreciate the delegate experience in new locations; to experience South Africa first hand! This is when I realised that Legends is exactly where I need to bring my group. It is much easier to advocate for a location when you have experienced the food, culture and sights.”

Sustainability Village

Exhibitor Nomaswazi Tinus, founder & director of African Mamas Crafts

“Exhibiting at the Sustainability Village at Meetings Africa 2019 was a great opportunity for African Mamas Crafts. 2018 was our first year of exhibition. We were excited, but didn’t really know what to expect. One of the highlights were the media opportunities as we got to speak on Morning Live and do a review with Business Events Africa. Although hard to quantify,

the value of these media opportunities has been immense and has increased our brand visibility and media profile. Besides growing revenue and making good sales through the voucher system, we’ve also established and are building good relationships with various stakeholders such as Gauteng Tourism, Tshwane Tourism & the South African National Convention Bureau (SANCB). These relationships have helped us increase market access opportunities. As a result, we were invited to provide delegate gifting for IMEX Frankfurt 2018 and participated as part of the village at the World Choir Games 2018, hosted by the City of Tshwane. Last year we applied for and received subsidised membership for the Event Greening Forum (EGF) sponsored by SANCB for

12 Business Events Africa March 2019

10 SMMEs. This has exposed us to other opportunities such as the EGF conference 2018, which was a great learning and networking opportunity. We have subsequently renewed our EGF membership for 2019 and look forward to being involved in the work the EGF is doing. In conclusion, we have seen immense benefit from being a part of the Sustainability Village at Meetings Africa. More importantly, we were excited to be part of the EGF AGM and to hear that the concept of the village is becoming more widely adopted. The potential socio-economic impact this has if all South African MICE events are done this way is huge. We would like to thank the SANCB and the EGF for inviting us, and we look forward to participating again in 2020.”

16 vendors, an increase from 12 in 2018.

The Sustainability Village gives small business owners an opportunity to sell their goods to hosted buyers and visitors through vouchers, cash and credit card. Exhibitors at the Sustainability Village indicated that besides the financial support, other value adds included promoting their products to additional markets and making connections. www.businesseventsafrica.com

his year’s edition of Meetings Africa took place from 25 to 27 February 2019 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg. This year, 344 exhibitors showcased their services and products to potential buyers. This is 38 more than last year. It has been confirmed that 102 exhibitors from 15 African countries joined their South African counterparts. African countries that will be newly represented include Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania and Mauritius.

This year saw 721 hosted buyers applying for spots at Meetings Africa, with a whopping 517 buyers (hosted and non-hosted) from 65 countries accepted to attend surpassing last year’s total of 420. Other buyers thought Meetings Africa was valuable for the networking opportunities and the number of products and appointments.

REPORT BACK | Meetings Africa 2019

Awards honours exhibitors that are the greenest of them all There seems to be something in Cape Town’s water because the Mother City had dominated this year’s Meetings Africa 2019 Green Stand Awards. The announcement was made at the Welcome Networking Cocktail Function, held at Urban Tree, Johannesburg, on Tuesday, 26th February.

A

ccording to South African Tourism Chief Executive Sisa Ntshona, The Meetings Africa 2019 Green Stand Awards seek to recognise exhibitors who go that extra “green” mile to build and design stands that are environmentally and socially sustainable. The stands are judged against the Event Greening Forum (EGF) award criteria including design, materials, operations, transport, communication, beyond green and innovation. “Exhibitors were afforded the opportunity to participate in the competition by showcasing their stand at the exhibition and submitting a written motivation explaining why their stand is green,” Mr Ntshona said. The awards were divided into three categories: small, medium and large stands. Winners of the small stand category, Resource Design, designed their stand using recycled Xanita board and printed collateral. Based in Cape Town, Resource Design is a creative solutions provider to the exhibitions, events, retail and the hospitality industry. It promotes the use of sustainable materials and the use of LED lighting. Gary van der Watt from Resource Design said: “It has taken us eight years to get to this point where people notice the

product for what it is. We also have legacy projects, where most of the exhibition stands are reused to create desks at preschools. Kids have got light weight, non-toxic desks to sit at. They can go back into recycling, so that nothing ever goes into landfills. Our logistics are much better because we can use small trucks.” The winners of the medium-sized stand category, Cape Town International Convention Centre, embraced the principles of sustainability with a stand for its use of electronic collateral, low reliance on transport and positive social impact. Its fabric banners will be repurposed into drawstring bags and used as corporate gifts. Judges noted that the competition was tight in this category with many contenders, however the winning stands embraced greening principles in their procurement processes through engaging with stand designers. Adéle Eloff from Cape Town International Convention Centre said: “We have put much work into sustainability, as going green is very important. It is something that is very close to our hearts. We are grateful to see that this is getting appreciation from the exhibition industry, from Meetings Africa and all those involved.”

Green Stand Award winners were as follows: Small stand Runners-up: Two Oceans Aquarium Winner: Resource Design Medium-sized stands Runners-up: Legend Hospitality Group Winner: Cape Town International Convention Centre Large-sized stand Winner: Cape Town and Western Cape Convention Bureau

The large stand winner of the night, Cape Town and Western Cape Convention Bureau, won for keeping up with sustainable, creative and trendsetting principles. They were also noted for being knowledgeable about greening and its value. The modular stand materials, comprised a mix of Xanita board, wood, and steel frames that has been used at 12 events over the last three years. Head of the bureau, Corné Koch, said they are always looking for ways to save budget and use it sustainably. “We are not only looking to build a quality stand, but also a sustainable stand that can be reused. As a result, the group is starting to be wellknown for being resilient and sustainable.”

SAACI hosts ‘post’ Meetings Africa cocktail party The SAACI Johannesburg branch hosted an unwind and relax networking event at the close of Meetings Africa 2019 at Pappas On The Square. Part of the event was the inaugural Cocktail Competition. Ruth Baldwin, Business Events Africa won for her Nameless Gin Cocktail. She won bragging rights as the ‘SAACI Johannesburg Cocktail Champion for 2019’.

Discover extraordinary destinations with Minor Hotels Minor Hotels’ diverse spectrum of hotel chains and brands connects to the needs and desires of today’s global travellers. In this feature, Business Events Africa looks at two of Minor Hotel’s destination properties located in Mozambique and Zambia.

Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort

I

n the remote Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique, the Indian Ocean teems with marine life and jewel-like waters surround a cluster of six paradise islands. On the largest of these, Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort offers luxurious exclusivity to explore it all. Inspiring travellers with a sense of adventure, the private island hideaway showcases its extraordinary destination with incomparable experiences, and also goes the extra mile to help conserve its precious environment. Discovery is a must, with adventures at every pace. 4x4 island tours uncover more pristine bays, rich flora and fauna, laid-back local life and a 19th century lighthouse. Soft powdery white sands are cantered along on horseback and riders can take their steed for a swim in the sea. Towering dunes offer dramatic boarding slopes, and a unique spot for

sunset drinks. An ornithologist guides bird watchers to flocks of pelicans and flamingos at coastal lakes. Renowned as one of the world’s top snorkelling, diving and fishing destinations, the Bazaruto Archipelago boasts year round warm waters, dazzling soft coral ridges and thousands of tropical fish species. Water sports in a pristine ocean playground include water skiing, knee and wake boarding, doughnut and banana boat rides, or the serener pace of exploring by kayaks and stand up paddle boards. Traditional dhow boats sail into sunset, with a glass of champagne in hand. Cruises set out in search of dolphins, whales, turtles and the largest population of the rare dugong on the African east coast. From one utopia to another, a boat trip to aptly-named Paradise Island wows with superb snorkelling, relaxed sunbathing

without a soul in sight, and extends the pleasures with a leisurely BBQ picnic. The Bazaruto Archipelago is also one of the world’s top deep sea fishing destinations. The archipelago has a strong conservation policy of tag and release that ensures sustainability, and many a prize catch. Indeed Anantara Bazaruto has won the prize for the most tagged fish of all commercial charter operations on the Southern African east coast. Corporate retreats enjoy productive meetings in the conference room, with state-of-the-art equipment and flexible seating for up to 60 guests. Distinctive team building activities can be followed by impressive dining, with the added allure of no interruptions to seal the deal or celebrate a triumph in secret.

TEAM BUILDING | Legacy Hotels

Team building More than just an excuse to have fun Bringing staff together is a great way to get your teams to work more cohesively with each other. Team building is more than just an excuse to have fun, it’s an opportunity to allow teams to bond with each other and to build on their skills at the same time.

B

usinesses and organisations use team building regularly to strengthen their teams. It helps to open up communication between people, helps the team to strategise and tackle problems and it is also an excellent way to resolve conflicts that may exist in your team. Team building also allows teams a chance to get to know each other better, especially if they don’t get a regular chance to socialise at the office. This boosts morale and promotes teamwork. When teams collaborate, the overall performance of employees increases as well as innovation and creativity. Research shows that companies with employees who are engaged in the company vision fare 2.5 times better

24 Business Events Africa March 2019

as far as income is concerned. And when employees are engaged, they are less likely to leave in search of greener pastures. Team building fosters this kind of engagement among employees, and while many organisations may think that Team building may not be necessary, it may ultimately improve their bottom line. Of course, Team building doesn’t have to specifically focus on the objective of building skills and communications. It could simply be an occasion to celebrate a win, or the end of a big project. The results would still be the same: better communication, a stronger team that communicates well and an increase of trust among co-workers. Activities at team-building events vary widely. It can be as simple as organising

a monthly or weekly get-together with the team for beers and pizza and seminars to elaborate adventure style breaks in exotic locations. Taking your team out of their regular office environment is a great way to stimulate creativity and communication. There are a number of hotels and lodges that offer team-building as part of their services. While some, like Legacy Hotels and Resorts, may not offer them in-house, they could outsource the team-building activities to accommodate corporate guests. From the Pilanesberg, to Namibia, to Victoria Falls to Ghana, Legacy’s collection of hotels and lodges across the African continent offers a variety of team-building options for all groups from small to large.

What is the most impulsive thing you have ever done? I bought my first car without having planned it at all. I went to the dealership and drove out with a car I only saw minutes before.

What advice do you have for anyone starting out in this industry and hoping to follow in your footsteps? You have to enjoy what you do. I was fortunate to have the ATKV Resorts allow me to do to what I enjoy. It takes passion. This is a service sector based on relationships all the way. It is hard work, but with passion one will derive a lot of fun from it and have great experiences. Business Events Africa March 2019 31

EXECUTIVE CHEF

Stephen Mandes has always been

curious about food

Stephen Mandes, executive chef of The Westin Cape Town, is driven by new challenges and change.

T

he 31-year old culinary arts graduate is also the 2014 winner of Ultimate Braai Master, the reality TV cooking show. He describes working at The Westin Cape Town as something he always wanted to do. “This is a flagship dining experience, the food is good, the views and setting are amazing – it’s a dream come true.” Born in Cape Town, Stephen grew up in Parow and said he’s always been curious about food and cooking. “I started cooking when I was young, my dad was the cook at home and I was always helping. “I then completed a three-year advanced diploma in culinary arts at Northlink College in 2009. My

introduction into the industry was at The Cullinan hotel as a trainee. “I started as a commis chef at The Cape Grace hotel and worked my way up over the years at various establishments. This is my 10th year as a qualified chef,” Stephen said. “I’ve always had a pure passion for food. When making the career choice, it wasn’t hard for me to decide to pursue a career as a chef.” His goal for the next five years is to make the Westin Cape Town a recognised culinary destination. “I’d also love to travel or work overseas.” Stephen enjoys mentoring young chefs and sourcing artisan suppliers. “In that way you get in touch with people who are as passionate as I am about food.”

Industry trends In terms of trends, he said there is a move towards sustainability: waste less cooking, snout to tail concept, locally sourced produce, foraging. “There is also a trend toward healthy living. These are the factors I always take into consideration when developing a new menu.” Globally, he said the main trends include the farm-to-table concept and sustainable,

locally-sourced produce. “There is a strong focus on healthier food options. Guests want to know more about the food and where it comes from, cooking methods, exotic ingredients etc. Guests want to be more involved.”

Challenges Every industry has its challenges. Stephen said for him it is to always give the guest an amazing experience, whether it’s the first or the tenth time they dine at the hotel. He added: “It is about consistently exceeding guests’ expectations and finding and maintaining customers, as it’s a very competitive industry and you always need to be on top of your game. “Another challenge is staff turnover. It is always high in the industry, and therefore training needs to be a focus of management.” Stephen is married to Melissa and has a three-year-old son named Joshua. “This will be our sixth year of marriage.” In his free time he enjoys movies and visiting wine estates with his wife. He also enjoys going to gym, cooking at home, listening to music, reading and drinking wine, if that counts as a hobby. Stephen’s advice to newcomers wanting to become an executive chef is: “Be firm, be understanding, and always motivate those around you. Always keep an open mind – anyone can come up with an amazing idea.”

What is your signature dish? Slow-cooked beef short rib, duck liver butter, wild mushrooms and port pickled onion.

ASSOCIATION RESOURCE GUIDE 2019

Leatitia van Straten Chairperson, The Association of African Exhibition Organisers (AAXO) Since its launch in 2016, AAXO has grown exponentially. Not only do we host ground-breaking networking events, but we also provide opportunities for world-class training and knowledgesharing within our membership base and the extended industry. AAXO is focused on a commitment to provide exceptionally high standards to our members and to formalise and standardise the industry. We are continuously engaging with our members to encourage best-practice strategies, develop partnerships, and lobby government to help us increase our membership. AAXO aims to be an association with integrity, and members are required to have their shows ABC-approved prior to becoming an AAXO-approved organiser, supplier or venue. AAXO also undertakes industry research on behalf of our members to ascertain the value of exhibitions on our economy and the contribution towards our GDP, travel and tourism. As an association, we understand the importance of the compilation of information of the various industry players promoting their services to the broader market, locally and globally. AAXO fully endorses and supports the 2019 Annual Resource Guide, compiled and presented by Business Events Africa.

Greg McManus Chairperson, Event Greening Forum (EGF) The Event Greening Forum (EGF) is a non-profit organisation that promotes sustainable business practices within the South African events industry, in a manner where the triple bottom line of environmental, social and economic concerns are all addressed. For those companies who want to begin or advance their sustainable journey, the EGF encourages you to join our community by becoming a member. We also offer event greening training, host educational and networking events, and are a valuable resource of information and best practice case studies. We have created Minimum Standards for Sustainable Events, and are in the process of creating Green Events certification. To make event greening easier, we launched the Green Database last year (www.greendatabase.co.za). The South African companies on this directory not only offer products and services suited to the events industry, but are endeavouring to become more sustainable. The EGF works closely with a number of professional industry bodies, namely: AAXO, EXSA, Fedhasa, IFEA Africa, MICE Academy, SAACI, SATSA, SA Roadies, and TPSA powered by SACIA. We also have a strong partnership with the South Africa National Convention Bureau.

Trade associations make up the backbone of the business events sector. As Business Events Africa, we work in partnership with all the trade associations. Being a member of an association is vital, and being an active member is what it’s all about. You get out what you put in. In today’s competitive world, trade associations can give you the competitive edge, but more so they offer you and your company validation. Clients also have some recourse if there is a problem. Besides the great network of people you will meet, your association will work to assist you and be your mouthpiece on different forums and various government platforms. I am a proud member of all the trade associations in this Resource Guide and have, over the years, grown my network, made great business contacts and friends and continue to grow my knowledge base. EVENT GREENING FORUM NEWS

The EGF sets out its

strategy for 2019 The Event Greening Forum (EGF) hosted its AGM on 25 February 2019, and outlined its objectives and strategy for creating a more sustainable events industry in 2019.

E

GF chairperson Greg McManus said: “We have achieved a lot over the past few years, from building partnerships with key industry associations and government, to publishing minimum standards for sustainable events (the first in Africa) and initiating research into waste in the events industry. However we are still nowhere near where we want to be; we have a lot of work ahead of us.” Three key goals were outlined for 2019. They are:

To formalise professional recognition of training for sustainable events in the industry

1

The EGF has already initiated discussions with training bodies to find out how to accredit its event greening workshops. It will aggressively pursue this in 2019, so that it can offer certified training as soon as possible. Event greening training will still be offered in the meantime – and the EGF is developing some exciting new formats and platforms for this. You can sign up for the EGF’s newsletter at www. eventgreening.co.za/contact-us/ to be kept up to date of these opportunities. Plus, don’t forget that the EGF’s 2019 Master Class and Conference on the 10 and 11 June 2019 respectively are also opportunities to gain a better understanding of sustainable issues and opportunities. The theme this year is ‘Imagining a different future’ and will explore concepts like the circular economy. The venue is to be confirmed, but will be in Gauteng.

2

To create a comprehensive supplier database

The EGF’s Green Database launched in 2018. It now has 265 companies listed on it, all providing various services or products with sustainable benefits to the events industry. It’s shaping www.businesseventsafrica.com

up to be an indispensable tool for simplifying event greening. The focus in 2019 is to grow it even more, and motivate the industry to use it more. “An exciting new feature which we will be adding this year is the option to rate the listings on the Green Database. This kind of client feedback will help those in the industry make more informed procurement decisions,” Mr McManus added. To search for prospective vendors on the Green Database, simply go to www.greendatabase. co.za and search by category.

3

To increase membership

Since the EGF was founded, membership has shown a steady increase. However, there is a concern that is only represents a small percentage of the events industry. “Becoming more sustainable is not just a ‘nice to do’. It makes business sense, in terms of being more efficient and competitive. Very few South African companies have recognised this, and are ahead of the pack in this regard,” Mr McManus said. The benefits of EGF membership include: discounted rates for EGF training and events; being an EGF preferred supplier; the use of the EGF logo; a company profile on the EGF website; a complimentary Gold Package listing on the Green Database (valued at R650); and networking and sponsorship opportunities.

The 2019 EGF Management Committee A warm welcome is extended to the team who will be pursuing these goals. They are: • Chad Botha (Inspire Furniture) • Greg McManus (Heritage Environmental Management Company)

• Justin Hawes (Scan Display) • Lisa Jade Merven (GingerBiscuit) • Lynn McLeod (individual) • Morwesi Ramonyai (Borena Energy) • Neo Mohlatlole (7 Colors Communication) • Gavin Burgess (Ultimate Data Sciences)* • Gavin Heron (Earth Probiotic Recycling Solutions)* • Gary Van der Watt (Resource Design)* • Grace Stead (Steadfast Greening)* • Melissa Shield (Two Way Exhibitions & Events)* *Co-opted members The new chairperson, vice chairperson, treasurer and secretariat will be elected at the next Management Committee meeting in April.

About the EGF The Event Greening Forum (EGF) is a non-profit organisation that promotes sustainability within the business events sector. It does this by hosting educational sessions for industry and lobbying government in an effort to implement sustainability principles into the daily operations of the events industry. The EGF was established through dedication and support of eight industry associations who are recognised as founding members. The founding members are key industry associations working together to promote South Africa as a destination for various types of events.

SAACI NEWS

Telecom providers can make or break your business We are all aware of the importance of communication during the promotion and running of any event, especially when it comes to delegate, speaker and even marketing communications but do we ever manage the importance of the internal connectivity within our event planning and operational teams? By Rudi Van Der Vyver, chief executive officer of SAACI

I

’m not referring to communication processes and principles, but rather the telecoms infrastructure and service from providers which allows us to effectively stay in communication not only with our clients, but our operational teams as well. From personal experience, I have measured Vodacom, MTN and Telkom. Firstly, in the major metropoles when looking at their respective coverage maps, they appear to have you covered, but in practice this is often far from the truth. I have found Vodacom to be the most accurate, but MTN delivered a strong connection even in some areas not shown to have full coverage. Telkom was the total opposite, on many occasions requiring six to seven redials to finish a 10-minute call. For many of us in the industry, travelling internationally to meetings and/or events is a common occurrence, and it is vital for us to stay connected to our teams in foreign countries. Again, Vodacom and MTN stand head and shoulders above Telkom.

Their international roaming activation is smooth, easy, efficient, and above all is activated very quickly, and it works. With Telkom, on the other hand, I haven’t managed to activate roaming successfully after two trips, and the support received was been nonexistent. Their process requires you to apply for roaming 7 days in advance. With the nature of our business, we often need to travel within a day or two of arrangements being made. In my experience, even the turnaround time was not met, and roaming was never activated, even when completing the request in store, through the call centre, and via online application. Lastly, as a service quality-driven industry, I measured service interactions with the three telecom providers. Service interactions were general queries, application process efficiency and assistance and troubleshooting or complaint recovery. Once again,

Telkom was absolutely shocking in all service-related areas. Their product and service knowledge is extremely poor, too. Vodacom provided the best service levels, and has a very good understanding of internal procedures as well as product and service offerings. Their service recovery and complaint resolution process was the most efficient, and they have more senior staff on hand to deal with matters outside of the general scope for fast resolution. MTN was close to Vodacom in staff efficiency, knowledge and willingness to assist. They are also focused on customer experience and value. Communication is absolutely vital in the business events industry, and it is crucial to ensure you and your staff are assisted by a telecom provider as a partner in your business, and not merely as a supplier. Do your homework and choose carefully so you don’t miss that one call that makes or breaks your business.

SITE NEWS

SITE launches its manifesto for the

incentive travel industry At SITE’s Global Conference in Bangkok in early January under the expert facilitation of Martin Sirk, former executive director of ICCA, The Bangkok Manifesto was created following a series of workshops with SITE’s international board of directors, trustees of the SITE Foundation and a cohort of global experts in the field of incentive travel.

T

he final 10 statements of the Bangkok Manifesto were then crowdsourced with the full conference assembly using Slido, the on-line, audience engagement platform. Supported by Meet in Ireland, the Bangkok Manifesto will be a core reference point for incentive travel professionals throughout 2019. A print collateral piece, complete with commentary from incentive industry thought leaders will be launched at IMEX, Frankfurt in May 2019. At SITE’s annual conference in Vancouver, Canada in January 2020, the Vancouver Manifesto will be crafted. “Only SITE – the “I” in MICE – has the authority and entitlement to produce a manifesto about incentive travel, articulating its true purpose and identifying its tremendous value within the ever-changing business world today,”

said SITE president Philip Eidsvold, CIS, CITP, VP Strategic Alliances, One10. SITE’s chief executive officer Didier Scaillet added: “SITE’s voice needs to reach out beyond our membership and our industry into the business world and society itself positioning incentive travel as an extraordinarily effective tool for improving business performance and travel as a transformative agent for positive change in communities and society at large.” “Meet in Ireland is proud to assist SITE in the creation of this hugely important document. Incentive travel is the fastest growing sector of MICE with the highest per person spend and the widest reach across the destination supply chain. “Incentive travel delivers significant economic benefit for destinations like Ireland along with the wonderful

boomerang effect – satisfied clients tend to return again and again and generate great ‹word of mouth› for the destination” said Ciara Gallagher, manager, Meet in Ireland, the official MICE brand for the island of Ireland. Owned and managed by Fáilte Ireland – the National Tourism Development Authority – it promotes Ireland as a world class business events destination. The Bangkok Manifesto is a wideranging series of statements that tackle the nature, purpose and direction of incentive travel. In February and March SITE will invite leaders in the field of incentive travel to provide written commentary on each of the 10 statements. This content will be captured in written and verbal form and launched at IMEX Frankfurt in May 2019.

What we’re all about: motivational experiences Why we do it? Business results! Site is the only global network of travel and event professionals committed to motivational experiences that deliver business results. Site provides insights and connections that inspire the utilisation of this powerful tool across diverse industries, regions and cultures. THE LAST WORD

Traveller feedback will mitigate negative effects of travel friction Direct feedback from frequent corporate travellers can be a powerful tool in the arsenal of a travel manager or corporate travel procurement manager in their efforts to achieve better compliance and engagement, and reduce the human cost of frequent travel.

n 2019, FCM Travel Solutions believes understanding traveller pain points will be a key way to influence corporate travellers to make better choices about their trips and increase the effectiveness of a corporate travel programme. Nicole Adonis, general manager of FCM Travel Solutions South Africa, said: “The insights garnered from your frequent traveller can be used to tweak travel programmes. By encouraging your travellers to give feedback, you also show them you care about service levels, want to offer more-personalised experiences and have their well-being at heart. Happy travellers are more productive, more engaged and more likely to comply with the company’s travel policy.” Ms Adonis and her team of travel experts will be placing continued focus in 2019 on the negative impact of travel friction, which occurs when business people are travelling too much or have poor travel experiences. Main sources of travel friction, she said, include unclear travel programme policies, poor approval processes and travel policies that fail to factor in the human cost of travel or prioritise financial savings over traveller wellbeing. “Companies should keep a look out for the warning signs among their most prolific travellers, which includes employee absence, poor staff retention and reluctance to travel, among others,” Ms Adonis said. help corporates understand the impact of behavioural economics on travel decision-making. Combining insights from psychology, judgement, decision making and economics, the field of behavioural economics considers why individuals make purchasing decisions, what they will buy and how much they are willing to spend. “By understanding behavioural economics, subtle changes to travel policies can be implemented to ‘nudge’ employees to behave and choose travel options that fit within the company’s travel policy,” Ms Adonis said. “We’ve spent some time researching behavioural economics, travel friction and some of the other corporate travel trends we anticipate for 2019. Corporates who are interested in these can visit our website and read our research paper for additional insights,” Ms Adonis added. www.businesseventsafrica.com
