A few weeks back I took part in the RSPB’s bird watch. I sat down and watched and counted the birds that visited my garden. I have to say that word must have got around as to what I was doing, as there seemed to be a lack of birds of all varieties who frequent the feeders in the garden normally! No collared doves, no magpies or long tailed tits! The next day I saw all of the above along with a bullfinch.

However, sitting there quietly for an hour gave me time to reflect on the beauty of creation. It made me think of the words of that popular hymn “All things bright and beautiful”. Especially the words of one verse which say, “Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings.”

The hymn reminds us that we have a creator God, and if we take a moment to look around it is hard not to believe in a creator making our world. We are given a rendition of creation in the book of Genesis in the Bible (chapter 1). For me however it is a passage which has a lot of understatement

in it. Each day after God has created something, a lot of translations state that it “was good”! To me creation is marvellous. I often think would I have the imagination to design a tiger or a duck billed platypus! But God did and does.

I often wonder what it must have been like on the ark with all the different noises, colours and shapes of the animals. From the money spider to the elephant, and the parrot to the snake!

Now you may not agree with me and as to the truth of creation, and prefer to go with the theory of evolution and the big bang.

But no matter what you believe take time to sit and look at this wonderful world we have around us, no matter how busy you are there is always time to pause and see the beauty that surrounds us. As you do this you will find that a peace which you cannot explain will come upon you. Then, when you begin work again it will be that little bit easier, and you will be able to approach it with a new mindset.

After the jollity of our December Christmas party, we had a sobering talk about the Norfolk Blood Bikes in January.

The meeting on February 1st was opened by Mrs Nina Fairman who welcomed all members to the afternoon programme.

After this business, which is always kept to a minimum was dealt with and the speaker was introduced as Mr Alan Durrand who was giving a talk called ‘Odd Corners of East Anglia’.

Mr Durrand started his slide show with a lovely view of his house in Upper Oakley 3 miles from the river Waveney near Diss which he had taken in 1979 the day after a very heavy snow storm.

Poringland Fuel Allotment Charity Volunteer needed!

Do you live in Poringland? Could you spare an hour or so every couple of months?

Poringland Fuel Allotment Charity makes small grants of money to Poringland residents in financial hardship needing short term help. A vacancy has arisen for a new Trustee who, ideally, would have some legal skills. This is a rewarding role and is not too time consuming. If you might be interested, please call the Clerk, Lesley Sanders on 01508 492155 for an informal chat or email her on dickles17@hotmail.com

We learnt that SERV Norfolk is a registered charity run by local volunteers and they transport blood, plasma, platelet, samples, vaccines, factor VII, donor breast milk and any other urgently required medical items to hospitals. They are on call at night, daytime weekends and bank holidays and the service is provided completely free of charge, allowing the NHS to divert funds where they are needed most. The volunteers receive no financial compensation for their time or costs and rely on donations to cover the running costs of £3,000 per month needed to keep the motor bikes on the road.

At our meeting on 8 March, the speaker will be Daphne Howlett with a talk on Conchology. Lots of shells will be on display, and the competition is for articles made from Shell.

We always make visitors very welcome at our meetings which take place on the second Wednesday evening each month in the Community Centre. He continued showing us lovely colourful slides from around Norfolk, these included several of the speakers own enjoyment of various hobbies. Bressingham had lovely slides of train and engines and wonderful flower beds and grounds, we then saw several village signs which are always of interest to our members. Next, we visited several churches, one splended one was St Marys in the village of Banham.

Riddlesworth Hall school, which was once a stately home looked lovely on a sunny day, Princess Diana went to school there. Then off to Somerleyton Hall to visit the proud Tudor period mansion, photos taken of the walled garden and glass greenhouses and the pergola. We were very lucky to travel to lovely views of rivers, boats flowers and glorious sunsets, to complete our tour we arrived back at Mr Durrands house in summer to see the house and rose gardens in brilliant sunshine, a really enjoyable afternoon.

After a vote of thanks all members enjoyed a friendly chat while enjoying refreshments.

Our next meeting will be on March 1st at 2pm, the speaker will be Ann Newman talking about “My Suitcase, My Patience & Him”. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Octagon , please come along if interested you would be made very welcome.

The man who brought us Thomas the Tank Engine A reluctant author who created characters loved by millions of children died 20 years ago this month, on 21st March 1997, aged 85.

The Rev Wilbert V Awdry is best known as the writer of Thomas the Tank Engine and 25 other railway books, which at the time of his death had sold an estimated 50 million copies. They have also given birth to toys, games, videos and a television film series.

He invented the stories initially to tell his son Christopher when he was ill with measles, and had to be persuaded by his wife Margaret to get them published.

Mr Awdry, who was made an OBE shortly before his death, was a clergyman who ministered in Hampshire, Wiltshire, Birmingham and Cambridgeshire. He was also a pacifist who once lost his curacy as a result. He was always interested in railways, having been fascinated as a child in Wiltshire by listening to steam trains ascending the grade into the nearby Box Tunnel.

The Fat Controller in the stories is sometimes thought to be a God-like figure, but he was intended as a satire on bureaucracy. For Mr Awdry, the morality of the stories was clearly Christian, and analogies between the Christian faith and the ways of the railway were obvious: the engines are meant to stay on the right track, and they pay the price if they go off the rails. But they are always forgiven, and never scrapped.

Asked how he hoped to be remembered, he said he would like his epitaph to say that “he helped people see God in the ordinary things of life, and he made children laugh”.

What are you giving up for Lent?

Somebody asked a Christian friend why he was eating doughnuts, when he had given them up for Lent! He answered, ‘At the bakers I told God, that if He wanted me to buy doughnuts, He should provide a parking space in front. On the eighth time around, there it was!’ Rather than seeing Lent simply as a time to give things up, let’s use it intentionally for self-examination, reading Scripture, penitence, fasting and prayer.

At Jesus’ baptism, God’s voice says, ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’ (Luke 3:22). The Holy Spirit then leads Jesus into the wilderness, where we find Him coming to terms with who He is.

Satan’s temptations challenge Jesus in key three areas of His identity: social action, political power, and religious identity (Luke 4: 1-13). It is as though Jesus looked into the mirror at Himself to discern what kind of Saviour He would be.

We can also think of Lent as an opportunity to hold a mirror up to ourselves and ask the question, ‘who am I? It is a season of honest encounter with who we are, what we’ve done, and the world in which we live.

How will you keep Lent period of 40 days running up to Easter? Whatever we do, Lent is a season for self-reflection, as we put ourselves in a position to receive afresh the forgiveness and healing that God offers.

Be kind to middleaged women Be kind to the middle aged women in your life – they are probably under stress.Recent figures have found that the number of women in the UK taking their own lives reached the highest level for a decade in 2015. And it isn’t the young, but the female baby-boomers who are struggling. The Samaritans describe the level as ‘alarming’, and think it may be because many such women are trying to juggle careers and caring responsibilities for older members of their families.

Churches Together GOOD Friday Procession of Witness At 10am On Good Friday (14th April) the Procession will leave Framingham Earl Hall, Bible College and proceed to Framingham Earl Methodist Church along Long Road, arriving at approximately 10.20am.

From there we shall proceed to All Saints Church along The Street with various stops along the way. At All Saints Church we will hold a short, final act of worship. The estimated time for this is 11.20am and will be followed by hot-cross buns. EVERYONE is very welcome to join us.

What a special day it was when HRH the Duchess of Cambridge visited the EACH hospice at Quidenham on the 24th January to see for herself why the EACH’s nook Appeal - which she launched in November 2014 - is so vital to the charity.

The Chief Executive of EACH Mr Graham Butland said the Duchess was given a really good insight into the difficulties the staff and volunteers face as a result of the hospice at Quidenham being not big enough to care for the increasing number of children and young people (currently 346) and there was no room to install the much needed extra facilities. He explained that it is not a ‘vanity project’ it is desperately needed to have a new purpose built hospice which will make a huge difference to the care they can provide to so many families.

During the few hours the Duchess was at Quidenham she spent time talking with several of the children and their families who were able to relate what enormous care, support and service they receive, some of them over several years, and that they couldn’t imagine life without EACH.

Mr Butland made an announcement about the £10 million appeal ‘We are half way there. We have climbed the top of the hill and we now want to go down a bit quicker to the bottom.’ The local nook Friends Group will have to race very fast downhill if we are to match the £40,000 raised since March 2015 over the next two years! Can we do it?

Drinking levels soar

Spring diets needed

Since the 1980s, the levels of alcohol consumption have gone up by a third. In 1980, England and Wales drank roughly 400 million litres. Now it stands at 533 million litres. Liver disease is on the rise, and now more working years of life are lost in England because of alcohol-related deaths than from more than 12 types of cancer combined. Liver disease has risen 400 per cent since 1970.

It’s the same old problem: most of us need to diet this Spring. Britain’s obesity levels are among the worst in the world, with now two thirds of adults and a third of young children obese or overweight. The NHS warns that dieting is crucial to counter the growing problem of diabetes.

What is the Filling Station: It is a new informal way of expressing the Christian faith. Using local mid-week monthly celebration meetings in unusual venues, we find that the local church is strengthened and helped in may ways.

The Filling Station is not a new church denomination, rather, a group of Christians who are celebrating their faith in God in an informal and authentic fashion.

Please come along to this local meeting, the session starts at 7pm with drinks and cakes, followed by a time of worship, testimonies/talks and prayer for those that want it.

The speaker this month is Mathew Hutton from St Stephens in Norwich.

The Filling Station evenings will be held every Third Thursday in the month, with the exception of August and December.

The Filling Station is not solely for Christians, ALL are Welcomed.

Framingham Earl Hall Way of the Spirit Hello, this is Kirstie again with details of what is happening in and around Framingham Earl Hall.

I hope that many of you will have spotted the Cornerstone Kiosk in the car park at Budgens. This is being run by our very own Peter and if you have not tried his burgers and sausages you really should do so. He is currently there on a trial basis and Budgens have been very generous in allowing him to park there.

At the end of January we had a church weekend away at Quiet Waters near Bungay. The purpose of the weekend was to look at the vision the church was founded on, look at what we have done in the last 10 years and look at where we need to be going in the future.

We were all amazed at what we have achieved over the last few years, especially considering what a small church we are.

It was great to see the strong connections we are making with the other churches in Poringland and the unity there is between them all. We are looking forward to this continuing in the future.

We have sent groups out to the bible college in Kenya as well as to other African countries and India. Many church leaders in these countries have so little access to solid Bible teaching that many will travel for days to attend a conference. It is very humbling to see them so keen to learn, understand what is taught and take it back to their congregations.

We are now looking at how we move forward, keeping the best of what we have and how we move forward with our vision for the church in the future. This can be quite challenging but we know that so long as we keep our eyes on God and listen to him we will keep on the right track. It is very easy to have your own good ideas but if they are not in line with God’s plan you will miss the very best you could receive.

The Great Daffodil Appeal

In the past three years, the number of calls to Childline about online sexual abuse has soared by 250 per cent. This has prompted the NSPCC to appeal to parents to make sure their children understand internet safety when they receive their smartphones or other internet devices.

Here is an opportunity to support a really worthwhile cause. March brings us the annual Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal, and volunteers are always needed for collections. Could you help?

Children called Childline for help because they were caught up in grooming, child sexual exploitation, sexting, being made to perform sex acts on webcam, or viewing distressing, sexually explicit material. They felt trapped, guilty, and ashamed; they were being blackmailed, or were about to meet someone in person.

To help your children stay safe, the NSPCC strongly advises installing parental controls on children’s internet devices.

Founded in 1986, the Appeal helps fund Marie Curie nurses to care at home for people living with any kind of terminal illness.

In 2013/14, Marie Curie was able to support 40,844 people living with a terminal illness.

People cared for by Marie Curie Nurses are three times less likely to be admitted to hospital in an emergency at the end of their lives. Seven out of 10 people cared for by Marie Curie Nurses are able to die in their own homes.
