New beginnings It was 1939 that firmly established the Royal Christmas Broadcast as a British tradition.

Dressed in the uniform of the Admiral of the Fleet, sitting in front of two microphones on a table at Sandringham, King George VI spoke live to offer a message of reassurance to his people. It was to be a landmark speech and was to have an important effect on the listening public as they were plunged into the uncertainty of war: “A new year is at hand. We cannot tell what it will bring. If it brings peace, how thankful we shall all be. If it brings us continued struggle we shall remain undaunted.”

He went on to quote from Minnie Haskins’ poem “The Gate of the Year” (1908) : I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’

And he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be better than light, and safer than a known way.’

I wonder what you are thinking about the prospect of a new year. Perhaps 2017 was not as good as expected and some unexpected things happened? For Theresa May losing her government majority and the subsequent dilemma of the Brexit negotiations has caused her many sleepless nights I’m sure. If you had been a bitcoin investor at the start of 2017 you would be

rich by now (unless you were the person who dumped his computer hardrive in a landfill site a few years ago still containing bitcoin which now would be worth millions – so much for crypto currencies!).

Another year older and wiser often brings health and family issues which we couldn’t imagine in a soap opera. But there are happy things too and finding love for the first, second or third time is always special.

In the face of so much uncertainty what is it that gives us real perspective on life and strength to face the future?

For me, it is God who provides that stability and strength to take the knock backs that life brings and stand tall with confidence to face the next challenge. My favourite promise in the whole bible is this “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Over the centuries many people have found that promise to be true in their lives and that as they put their hands “into the Hand of God it was better than light and safer than any known way.”

Loddon WEA Talks – Spring 2018 In her series of talks this Autumn about transport in East Anglia from the middle ages up to the 20th century, Mary Fewster gave us a most interesting picture of the development of the region’s roads, railways, rivers and ports, the different means of transport and their cost, and the organisation and legal framework which ensured their reliable functioning.

Another series of ten 1½ hour talks, this time on ‘Some Remarkable Norfolk Personalities’, will be starting on Monday 8th January 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Jubilee Hall Clubroom, Loddon. The speaker this time will be Mr. Nigel Wimhurst, now retired, but formerly a teacher of political and social history, politics and political theory to A-level and degree-level students. The personalities to be covered will, of course, include Nelson; the others will be Herbert de Losinga, Margaret Paston, Robert Kett, Amelia Opie, Elizabeth Fry, Harriet Martineau, J.J. Colman and Dorothy Jewson.

The talks will be largely informal, with time for questions and discussion. The fee for the complete course will be £54, but if you are undecided, come to the first talk free of charge and pay only if you decide to continue. On-line enrolment is possible by going to enrolonline. wea.org.uk; you may also enrol at the Jubilee Hall both before and after the first talk. No previous knowledge of the subject is required; there are no exams to take; the atmosphere is friendly…. and there is plenty of parking space at the Jubilee Hall. Everyone is welcome.

Wednesday Group Mrs Nina Fairman welcomed all members on December 5th to our Christmas lunch, this was enjoyed by everyone, amongst much laughter and chatter.

Our next meeting will be on January 3rd at 2pm, this will be a Informal Meeting.

Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Octagon , please come along if interested you would be made very welcome.

Beaver Leader Can you help?

Brooke and Poringland Beavers urgently need someone over 18 years old to assist at our Beaver Section, which is for 6-8 year olds. The meetings are term time, between 6pm and 7pm on a Monday at our Den in Brooke. We currently have a full Section of 20 Beavers and a substantial waiting list. If no-one can be found, there is the possibility that the section will have to close.

We are ultimately looking for a Leader, or Assistant Leader. Our current Leader Lucy has to leave by Christmas, due to her job demanding that she now travels to Europe regularly. She cannot therefore commit to attending every Monday evening.

Lucy has offered to stay on the Team to assist with the planning of the meetings, which we usually get done a term in advance. She will also attend wherever possible on a Monday evening, although this will not be often.

We have two other Leaders at the moment, Kyle & Jack. Kyle is in the farming industry so there are times when he cannot get to Brooke for 6pm. Jack works away so again, there are times when he cannot attend.

We have a very strong Parent Helper Rota, so 2-3 parents stay every Monday.

Unfortunately, we cannot persuade any of them to take on the Leadership Role, due to them mainly having other younger siblings to look after, but they are happy to stay a couple of times a term each.

50 years of Contact Magazine!

Poppy Appeal

The collection for Poringland in 2017 amounted to £2,389.72 (the final total for 2016 was £2,712.16).

Jean Waters and Family would like to thank neighbours and friends for all the cards and messages of sympathy received following the loss of George in September. Thank you also if you were amongst the 125 people who attended his funeral service at Poringland Church. We requested donations in lieu of flowers and Jean is delighted to announce that £1,150.00 has been sent to the “Nook Appeal” by the Undertakers, and again thank you so much for your generosity.

The 2017 Framingham Earl collection amounted to £673.49 which included £111.00 donated by a lady who had knitted and sold poppies. (The collection for 2016 amounted to £414.83).

Thank you on behalf of the ROYAL BRITISH LEGION for your support.

I would also like to say a big thank you to my excellent team of collectors and helpers who do a great job. Without them these results would not be possible.

An excellent New Year’s Resolution for everybody Here is something very easy, and very good, for you to do this year: simply eat more slowly. It could save your life.

Recent research in Japan has found that diners who gobble their food quickly are five times more likely to develop metabolic syndrome, the name for a cluster of dangerous health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. Those of us who eat quickly are also more than three times more likely to gain weight.

Scientists believe that eating quickly prevents the brain from noticing when the body has taken in too many calories. Unused calories are then stored as fat, which places pressure on the heart. Eating fast also appears to cause spikes of blood sugar, which can stop insulin from working effectively. Metabolic syndrome affects one in four adults in Britain.

Lights of the world Our Christmas celebrations are over. As we tidy up and restore our homes to what they were like before Christmas, we might look back at our festivities and ponder on what was so special about it.

Jesus made clear that He came as light for the world. He came to give life in all its fullness. He came to show God’s character—full of love, compassion, forgiveness and mercy.

So if, as we put away our Christmas

13 decorations, we think there is no more to be said until next Christmas, we have missed out on a vital part of the Christian message.

For Jesus also said that we, His followers, were to be the light of the world…...’let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven’. (Matthew 5:14-16). We are now involved! Jesus calls us, as His disciples, to be like Him this coming year - lights of hope, love, joy, healing and peace in a world that badly needs it.

A song by Graham Kendrick, ‘Do Something Beautiful’, urges us to: ‘Do something beautiful in the name of Jesus’, and ‘Go do something Jesus would’. Now that’s a challenge for 2018!

Choose between chocolate and cheese Here is a desperate choice: if you had to give up one forever, which would it be? After a great deal of heart-searching, it seems we are split nearly down the middle, with 50 per cent of us letting chocolate go, and 47 per cent letting cheese go. So – cheese wins! As one senior food analyst explains, ‘Cheese is a menu staple in the vast majority of homes.’

But although the survey, by Mintel the consumer analysts, found that we love cheese best, that does not mean we don’t love chocolate: in fact, we are buying more of it each year. This coming year we are forecast to get through nearly half a million tons of chocolate, and 785 million tons of cheese (most of it cheddar).

Growing, but ageing John Humphrys, the Radio 4 Today presenter, recently lost his bet! He had bet £5 that more people attended football matches on a Saturday than people went to church on a Sunday with Giles Fraser, an Anglican priest who sometimes gave “Thought for the Day” on the Today programme. But 5% of the population go to church on Sunday whereas only 3% watch a football match according to sportingintelligence.com. John said he would make his bet into £50 for a charity.

It is true that church numbers are declining but the figures in the latest (third) edition of UK Church Statistics, just published as the “2018 Edition,” show that the church isn’t about to die anytime soon. Forward estimates in the book suggest there are likely to be 4% of the population still attending church in 2030.

The group growing fastest, however, often seen not as churches in themselves but as part of a church’s outreach, are the Messy Churches, with almost 100,000 in attendance across the UK in 3,200 separate units, accounting for 6% of all the churches in the country, and growing in attendance at the rate of 11% per annum!

In 1980, 10% of the English population went to church, and 17% of the Scottish population. By 2015 these percentages had become 5% and 8% respectively and are projected to both be 4% by 2030, showing that Scottish churchgoers which include far fewer pro rata growing immigrant and Pentecostal churches, as a whole is declining faster than in England.

The two fastest growing groups of denominations, the Pentecostals and New Churches, have the highest percentage of men in their churches, respectively 49% and 50%, against an overall average of 43% in England. (In Scotland, the percentage is 40%). In England, the denominations with the lowest percentage of men are the Methodists and United Reformed Church with percentages 36% and 35% respectively.

This suggests that to have an abovepercentage of men helps church growth.

Single – and happy about it Women prefer the single life to men, because it is they who have to put the work into keeping relationships going.

This is the finding of a recent survey by consumer analysts Mintel.

They found that 61 per cent of single women are happy with their single status, compared to 49 per cent of single men. Also, 75 percent of all single women have not even looked for a relationship in the past year, compared to 65 per cent of single men.

For those aged 45 to 65, the difference is at its most stark. 32 per cent of single women in this age group say they are very happy alone, while only 19 per cent of men in this age group are happy alone.

Put on the kettle

Have a coffee. Seriously. It seems that drinking three or four cups of coffee a day may significantly cut the chances of your early death. There are even health benefits for those who drink up to seven cups each day.

Recent research by the universities of Edinburgh and Southampton have found that coffee drinking can be linked with a lower risk of various cancers, and also is beneficial with conditions including diabetes, gallstones, gout, depression and Parkinson’s disease. The only people coffee does NOT suit are pregnant women.

Overall, there seems to be a 17 per cent reduction in the chances of dying for someone who drinks three cups of coffee a day, compared to those who drink none.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! ....and what a year it is going to be watching the new hospice, THE NOOK, being built.

It is envisaged that the hospice will be in use by the summer of 2019, all thanks to everyone who is making it possible by contributing to raising the last £3 million.

The fundraising continued up to the end of 2017 with a stall at the Craft Fair, The Norwich Harmony Choir in concert at Brooke, over 125 Santas running, jogging, walking round the villages on a Sunday morning, a wonderful family Christmas Carol Service, and finally a very brave lady did a sponsored swim in the freezing cold sea on Christmas Day - no, it wasn’t me!! In addition we received lots of support and donations, including handicrafts to sell at the Craft Fair, some very generous donations in memory of deceased family members, prizes for tombolas and raffles, donations from loose change collection boxes, and sponsorship of events.

Since the departure of Israel’s last recognized prophet 400 years earlier, no definitive preached word had been heard in Judea. And then – in came this wild man from the wilderness - all hair and leather!

What schooling had he received, apart from heaven itself?

History has indeed served us at times with powerful preachers, albeit possessing minimal academic credentials! One such was the unschooled D.L. Moody of Chicago in the 19th century – whose last-ever letter contained 38 spelling mistakes. Yet millions responded to his riveting messages, both sides of the Atlantic. London’s Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury - the influential Ashley Cooper – compared him favourably with Britain’s supposedly top preacher, Canon Liddon of St Paul’s Cathedral. “Moody will do more in an hour,” said Shaftesbury, “than Canon Liddon in a century!”

So it had to be with John the Baptist.

There in Judea a new class of religious leadership had formed, in the Pharisees and Sadducees – but they were formal, dry and overlaid with tedious platitudes.

Now here was a man who was evidently the Elijah-like messenger foretold in the last sentence of the Old Testament; a man who would ‘turn hearts’ and baptise the repentant, there by the banks of the Jordan.

And Jesus Himself arrived – not that HE needed to repent… but His stepping into the water seemed to be identifying Him with the suffering, sinful humanity He had come to save. Indeed, it was He whom John was promoting.

‘A voice crying in the wilderness’ - that’s all John ever claimed to be (Isaiah 40:3), as He prepared the way for Jesus.

Let’s pray for the preachers around us this year – that the authority of their opened Bibles and the centrality of Christ may characterise their ministry – from Week One!

Power and corruption ‘Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.’ Lord Acton’s famous dictum has never seemed more fitting than during last Autumn’s series of public scandals.

It all began with allegations of sexual abuse against a highly distinguished Hollywood film producer. Then it was similar but wide-spread allegations from women in the general work-place. And finally, to cap it all, a series of allegations of similar abuse by our own elected rulers. In every case, power was the defining feature – power which could make or destroy a career or power associated with status, position or rank.

This is, in effect, a modern version of slavery. People – men, mostly – have always been tempted to use their power to dominate others or indulge their desires.

(Think of the story of David and Bathsheba, in the Bible.) The emerging emancipation of women in the work-place is finally exposing such behaviour as what it is, the corrupting effect of power on human relationships.

The revelations of the Autumn have shone a bright light into some murky corners of our social and working life. Now it is up to those who have the limited power of democratic government to see that what is exposed is fairly, but firmly dealt with, and up to each of us, where our own little bits of influence on other people are concerned, to use that ‘power’ with integrity and compassion.

St Paul - the first Christian intellectual

What happened to a young man called Saul on the road to Damascus has become a byword for all instant conversions - what is known as a ‘damascene’ moment. Saul was a devout Jew, a Pharisee, a student of Gamaliel and a fierce critic of the followers of Jesus, then a very new sect on the religious scene.

On his way to Damascus to organise a purge of Christians in that city, he was blinded by a bright light and heard a voice saying, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ He asked the identity of the voice, and it replied, ‘Jesus, whom you are persecuting’. Stunned by the experience, he followed further instructions which led him to a Christian man in Damascus, who prayed with him. As he did, Saul’s sight was restored.

The experience convinced him that Jesus - crucified in Jerusalem four or five years earlier - was in fact the Messiah and had risen from the dead. After a period of instruction, Saul was baptised and took the name by which history has recognised him, Paul. At first, some Christians were wary about the reality of his conversion, but over a period of time he was accepted and indeed eventually recognised as an ’apostle’, a ‘special messenger’ of Jesus Christ.

His intellectual stature and leadership gifts quickly marked him out, and within a few

years he became a leading figure in the emerging Christian Church, preaching and founding churches all over the Middle East, largely of Gentile converts. He was eventually martyred in Rome, probably in 65AD. Paul was the first intellectual of the Christian Church, the man who was able to set the events of the life and teaching of Jesus, and especially his death and resurrection, into a coherent theology, with its roots very clearly in the Jewish faith of his own upbringing.

He’s not always easy to follow. Even the New Testament admits that: ‘there are some things (in his letters) hard to understand’ (2 Peter 3:16). But at the same time he gave the new faith a foundation and credibility which have stood it well down the centuries.

Many people think of Paul as a rather negative, narrow misogynist, but even a quick reading of his letters actually reveals a person of great warmth, who evoked enormous affection and devotion from others. ‘You would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me!’ he writes to the Christians at Galatia. He was, of course, a man of his time and culture, in days when women were disregarded in terms of status and leadership.

But read his letters, and see how large a role women play in them and how much scope he gave them to lead and teach in the Church. In terms of the first century, St Paul was a dangerous liberal! So all in all, the amazing Paul of Tarsus deserves a bit of celebrating on 25th January.

The Way of the Spirit Hello, this is Kirstie again with details of what is happening in and around Framingham Earl Hall.

By the time you read this Christmas will be over and many people will be thinking about diets and summer holidays. The lead up to Christmas seems to last for months and then it is all over in a few days. It will not be long before Easter eggs appear in the shops and hot cross buns now seem to be available all year round. These days all the seasons seem to be muddled up.

In Ecclesiastes 3 it tells us: 1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

The writer here is talking about the seasons of our lives not the annual seasons. Do you know what season you are in in your own life? Are you in the right season? If not, what are you doing to change things? If you are serious about changing the season you are in pray for God to guide you. He will show you what you need to do and remember that we are always available if you want to discuss things further.

Religion plays a key role in limiting sexual and genderbased violence Recent research by the aid and development agency, Tearfund, has found that having a faith reduces the likelihood of men carrying out violence.

The charity, which works in more than 50 countries, found that men who are actively engaged in a faith group are more than twice as likely to think violence towards their partner is never justified, compared to those who are not engaged at all. The study was carried out in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where nearly 40 per cent of women have suffered sexual violence from an intimate partner in the past year.

The research was carried out as part of the UK government-funded project called What Works, to prevent violence against women and girls. As part of this project in DRC, Tearfund runs ‘Transforming Masculinities’, a project that works with faith and community

Now Tearfund, with the help of UK Aid Match, has launched a fundraising campaign to help people in Central African Republic. The UK government has pledged to match pound for pound every donation made by the public as part of its Aid Match programme, to help Tearfund transform people’s lives in CAR and beyond.

Tearfund aims are to eliminate new cases of sexual violence in 150 communities across 15 countries by the end of 2018.

The Conversion of St Paul

Many books have been written on Paul, and here is the briefest of introductions.

He was a Jew, born as ‘Saul’ at Tarsus, and brought up by the rabbi Gamaliel as a Pharisee. A devout, fanatical Jew, Saul persecuted the Christians, and watched with

satisfaction the first Christian martyrdom, the stoning of Stephen. Then on his way to Damascus Saul had a vision of Christ that stopped him, literally, in his tracks.

He realised that this Jesus whom he was persecuting was in fact the Messiah for whom he had longed.

Saul changed overnight. He took a new name, Paul, and became an evangelist for the cause of Christ. He became a leader in the early Church, and his special calling was as an apostle to the Gentiles. He wrote many epistles to the young churches he founded - and thus, inadvertently, wrote a great part of the New Testament.

Life as the greatest apostle was hardly full of perks: he was stoned, beaten, mobbed, homeless, hated, imprisoned, and finally martyred. Tradition has it that he was beheaded in Rome during the persecution of Nero in AD 64, and buried where the basilica of St Paul ‘outside the walls’ now stands.

His mighty faith in Christ has kindled similar belief in many hundreds of millions of people down the centuries.
