Dear Friends Do you use Social Media? I was introduced to FaceBook by my son when he first went to university. It enabled him to keep me up to date and was a lovely and positive experience while he was away from home.

Later, FaceBook became a huge blessing and source of comfort to me as a vast number of colleagues used it when my first husband died and I was away from work – it enabled them to send their messages of support and comfort to me but without it being intrusive as I could dip in and out as and when I wanted.

I now use it to keep in touch with the many families we have involved with the church Edward Bear Club for pre-schoolers (see details on page 8).

These are all positive examples of how Social Media can be a huge benefit. However, there is also a worrying trend whereby Social Media causes separation from the world of real human interaction. It can just be far too easy to sit in front of the screen and ‘chat’ or ‘tweet’ and not feel the need to meet with people and talk face to face.

Some people appear to live out their lives on social media posting every little detail of trivia of what they are getting up to, spending vast amounts of precious time interacting with a screen, posting endless photographs and presenting an image of themselves that they want others to see.

United Christian Broadcasts produced an article in their Bible reading notes last month

which is very topical and I would like to quote from it: ‘Real relationships aren’t built by posting updates, or tweeting and re-tweeting the most thought-provoking quotes. It takes more time than that. The greatest social networking involves meeting someone’s needs in a way that never would’ve happened without a one-on-one connection.

That’s what Jesus did. Most of His public ministry was spent pouring Himself into twelve men who, in turn, went out in His name and poured themselves into others.

The Bible says, ‘Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.’ The psalmist spelled out how many people today feel deep down: ‘No one is concerned for me … no one cares’ (Psalm 142:4). If you want to meet people’s needs, you have to get ‘up close and personal’. That’s what Jesus did, and He’s your example.’

Whilst this technology opens up huge opportunities it can also produce a laziness whereby the click of a button can seem all that is needed to have made contact with someone. How many of our young people are losing the art of true interaction and conversation which can ultimately lead to social isolation?

Social media can be a wonderful blessing and may it be exactly that and enhance that which is already there, not take the place of it.

In the second hour the carers meet, in a separate room, to discuss all the subjects relevant to their situation. During this time the volunteers will ensure that those needing care are catered for. Tea and coffee, at 50p/ cup, will be available throughout the period, as will complimentary biscuits.

All dementia suffers and their carers are welcome. This is an amazingly helpful group, particularly for the carers.

CofE apps grow in popularity Church House Publishing has marked a new milestone in its Church of England apps programme, with over 200,000 firsttime downloads.

Many of those who download the apps are using them routinely as part of their prayer life. Use of the Daily Prayer app – shortlisted for App of the Year at the Premier Digital Awards – was up 300% in May 2016, with 12,500 monthly users – enough to fill St Paul’s Cathedral five times over.

It seems a long time since we met together in the Octagon. July and August have passed very swiftly but the Wednesday Group has not been idle.

We enjoyed our annual tea afternoon in Nina's garden; the weather was kind, the company good and we were waited on with china cups and saucers, delicious scones and cakes in the manner to which we have definitely become accustomed.

That of course does not mean that we take it all for granted, on behalf of the members, thank you Nina and your team for all the hard work involved; I know your day started very early in the morning in order to give the members a very pleasant afternoon and this is much appreciated by us all. Our efforts raised over £100 for funds.

July 12th.saw many of us on the coach to Cromer--we had a very enjoyable day, everywhere seemed busy which added to the holiday atmosphere. Lunch was a very friendly affair and the pier show excellent entertainment without a spare seat in sight, again our thanks to Nina for making all the arrangements.

BOOK GROUPS These are held on the SECOND Tuesday 2.30pm-3.30pm & the SECOND Thursday 6pm-7pm of the month.

There are no junior book clubs at present but if you would be interested in setting one up then please call the library on 01508 494891.

We have lots of jigsaw puzzles to borrow and a few games in store too. If anyone would be interested in setting up a scrabble club etc please call the library on 01508 494891.

Looking forward to October, we have a fashion show from EWM, this will be an afternoon meeting at 2pm. Our meetings are held in the Octagon the first Wednesday in the month--all are welcome just come along.

Do you know that many benefits for older people remain unclaimed each year as they are too daunted by the forms to apply? You could support an older person to complete their forms, and help boost their income so that they can afford the care and support they need.

Loneliness can have a devastating impact on the lives of older people and it’s on the rise - which is why we’re urging new volunteers to commit to just one call a week, a call that can make all the difference to a lonely older person.

Age UK Norfolk is the first and most trusted port of call for so many older people and their families. We work hard to engage with older people and respond to their needs; our support services reach out to those who need help and enable them to enjoy later life.

But the vital link in this chain of life is often the volunteer – people from all walks of life, and of all ages, who feel they can make a difference.

Volunteers are the lifeblood and backbone of Age UK Norfolk. The success and efficiency of our services are dependent upon the people who generously donate their time, experience and compassion, and we currently are in urgent need of new volunteers to be able to continue supporting older people living in Norfolk!

Do you have experience of form filling and do you have a couple of hours a week free to spare?

We also have opportunities helping older people keep up with their paperwork from banks, building societies, landlords etc, which can become too much to cope with.

At any one time, Age UK Norfolk is providing ongoing support to over 250 older people, with the help of their volunteers. We are looking for people with a basic experience of handling household finances who could spare time to help older people to stay independent.

These are examples of just a few of the roles available. We have a wide range of roles in established services, and depending on your talents and interests, there is bound to be an opportunity where you can share your knowledge, learn new skills, make new friends and have fun! No experience is necessary and we provide full training. There are really no barriers to becoming a volunteer and volunteering for Age UK Norfolk is a great way to make a real difference to the lives of older people across Norfolk.

The nook Friends Group continued throughout the summer with its fund raising efforts. Some of our group members helped on the EACH stall at The Old Buckenham Air Show on the 30th and 31st of July and it was good to meet several local people who visited the stall.

Future events planned for the autumn include: Sunday 4th September: Several of our group members are helping at the Mannington Hall and Gardens Open Day all proceeds for The nook appeal. Stalls and games for all the family as well as tours of the hall and an auction of donated art.

Sunday 25th September: Tours of Kirstead Hall, the restoration workshop and the dovecote followed by afternoon tea in the walled garden and viewing of memorabilia.

Saturday 1st October: American Hoedown Dance at Framingham Earl High School – organised after repeated requests to hold another dance after the successful one held last year.

Stef Reid – Christian paralympic athlete on her way to Rio Stef Reid is a paralympic athlete. She does long-jump and also sprints. In the 2008 Paralympics she won a bronze medal in the 200 metres and in 2012, a silver medal in the long jump. She has broken the world record for long-jump in the F44 (below the knee amputees) class several times.

She had a life-changing accident in her teens as she describes: “I was in a boating accident when I was 16. The propellers caught me across my lower back. The water around me was blood red. I thought I had been cut in half.

The next issue was that we were three hours away from a half-decent hospital.

Loddon WEA Autumn Term 2016 The last series of talks organised by the WEA Loddon branch were on ‘Reasons and Beliefs’ and, in the Spring of this year, ‘Gardens through the Ages’.

Passing from ideas about philosophy and religion to a literally down-to-earth subject like gardening provides a good illustration of the range of interests that WEA talks can cover.

This Autumn, the talks, to be given by Brian Statham, will be about women of influence in the 15th and 16th centuries, including such figures as Elizabeth I, Lucretia Borgia, Diane de Poitiers, and many more.

“I survived but unfortunately the leg was so mangled that it had to be amputated. So I was really thankful to be alive. But with my love for sport, I was absolutely devastated.

The stuff that you love to do, you are told that you cannot do it any more.

“I don’t come from a Christian family but my parents sent me to a Christian school. We had Bible classes. I had a very good head knowledge of the Bible but it wasn’t a major part of my life. Everything changed when I was in the accident. I remember lying in the ambulance. I was scared because I knew in my heart that I wasn’t going to heaven. I did not know God. I had never asked Him what His plan was for my life. I remember praying for a second chance. It was a complete miracle that I survived the accident. I know that God had a hand in that.

From now on, a series of talks will consist either of 9 talks of 1½ hours or of 7 talks of 2 hours each. This Autumn, there will be seven 2-hour talks on Mondays in the Jubilee Hall Clubroom, starting at 1.45 and finishing at 3.45. The first talk will be on Monday October 3rd. There will be a half-term break on October 24th and the series will end on November 21st.

“I also know that by me not dying, I still had a purpose here. There is a reason for me to be here and it completely changed my perspective. It changed me as a person and I committed my life to Him in the ambulance.

Now, I look at things from the perspective of hope. I have always got hope. I think that is the biggest difference”.

The fee for the series will be £49 (with fee remissions for those in receipt of certain State benefits), but if you are undecided you may come to the first talk free of charge and pay only if you decide to continue. There is ample free parking at the Jubilee Hall and there is wheelchair access from the playingfield side.

In September 2016 Stef will represent Britain in the Paralympics in Rio.

Everyone is welcome. No prior knowledge is needed.

Is social media taking over your child’s life?

When did your children last spend a couple of hours simply alone, daydreaming, without any social media to hand? When did they last spend even a day simply playing with other youngsters in the same room?

Terry Waite, the former Beirut hostage and C of E envoy, is concerned that social media has crowded out any chance for stillness, for inner reflection, and is instead reshaping the way young people interact with each other. Face-to-face encounter and simple conversations are no longer a priority.

As I write this at the start of July I am looking back on an incredibly wet month. On a number of occasions I have driven home from work along the B1113 when it has been more like driving down a river than a road. On a positive note we are in no danger of having a hosepipe ban this year.

I have just attended the Victims and Intimidators conference and can thoroughly recommend putting time aside to spend at one of our modules or conferences .

Seven of us attended the full conference but at each session between 6 and 12 other people joined us. One of the things we looked at was what it means to be a victim and how, even in the midst of the most difficult circumstances, we can ensure that we stand firm in our faith and do not allow ourselves to have a victim mentality.

Details of the modules and conferences to be run in the autumn term will be available in due course.

AUTUMN BIBLE CONFERENCE Wednesday 21 September 3pm to Saturday 24 September 1 pm at Belsey Bridge Conference Centre This is our annual conference where people come from all over the UK and beyond to spend time together looking at God’s word.

The theme of this year’s conference is the book of REVELATION – far from being just a map for the future (it’s really not that at all) the vision seems to have been written down to encourage the first century persecuted church. Come and hear what Jesus is saying to his church today.

Some readers may remember the media report one August, of a young secretary who went missing for some days, through a contrick perpetrated by a deceiving businessman.

Eventually she was found, in a somewhat confused state, at Basingstoke Railway Station. Evidently she had been completely unaware of the TV news – and of the public concern. In her own words, at the resulting press conference, she confessed, “I didn’t know I was lost until I was found!”

In this famous fifteenth chapter of Luke, Jesus’ parable of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost prodigal son, was basically making a single point – the steadfast determination of the eternal Father to do everything possible to find and recover every stray individual – even if they were taken by surprise at His seeking love.

Years ago I was leading a hospital ward service one Sunday morning, with a little team around me. It was still politically okay to do so in those days! All I could see of one patient was a newspaper, firmly held up – and a thin spiral of cigarette smoke that drifted up from behind the paper. Yes, back then it was still permitted to smoke in a hospital ward!

Two days later I went visiting in the same ward, bed to bed. And there was the patient – a woman in her early thirties.

“So you’re the one who was speaking on Sunday morning!” she exclaimed. “I never looked in your direction once; I was determined to hide behind my paper and my cigarette. But I was listening all the time. And every word you said was for me. I want now to follow what you were talking about. How do I get started?”

What do you eat at lunchtime when you are at work?

This is the wonder of God’s ways with us.

Jesus Christ is the Shepherd; out on the hills looking, working, seeking for that one sheep that is missing from the safety of God’s fold.

And when, by the message of His sacrificial love, that single ‘lost’ one is reclaimed, the angels are aglow with joy. Jesus said so.

What happened to the other patients that Sunday morning? Who can tell? But Heaven itself was lit up that day over just one.

The new range of celebrity-inspired on-thego meals has increased by 26 per cent in the last year. That means that overall, an additional seven million of us have created some very posh packed lunches indeed.

Plastic tubs are ‘out’; sealable glass jars are ‘in’. Ingredients now include kelp and quinoa, sweet potato crips and almonds.

The research was carried out by Kantar Worldpanel, a consumer analyst.

Chances are that your habits are changing, as more of us are opting for healthy ‘posh’ packed lunches instead of buying massproduced supermarket lunches, or taking ‘boring beige’ sandwiches with us to work.
