Poringland Fuel Allotment Charity Reg Charity No 246265 This charity was formed originally to distribute coal to the poor of Poringland and still makes payments to help with winter fuel costs as well as giving financial help to those in need, hardship or distress.

The Trustees are also able to assist with some educational expenses and make grants to local clubs and societies. Grants are restricted to those persons living in and organisations based within the parish of Poringland.

A SPECIAL MAN On the 21st of this month we will celebrate Father’s Day. It is the day when we can show the male members in our family how much they are loved and appreciated. As well as sending cards, the most common gifts are ties, socks, underwear, jumpers, slippers and other items of clothing.

Being a father is much more than performing a biological function. It is about loving and caring, guiding and sharing.

When I was a child a father was known to be the head of his family, the provider, and mother stayed at home and looked after the household. Nowadays the roles and responsibilities of parenting are often shared as both parents need to work.

A good father recognizes the importance of making time for those he loves, whether it is standing on the touch line of a football match in all weathers or being used as a taxi service for the umpteenth time in a week.

Some people have suffered rejection and cruelty at the hands of their fathers because they were men who could not be trusted.

Sadly, child cruelty is constantly in the news and it becomes very hard for children who have been affected by violence and cruelty to be able to trust anyone.

Every human father should want the best for his children; how much more is this true of the perfect love the Heavenly Father has for us all. His love is always reliable, it is everlasting.

He never stops loving us; He never withdraws His words of promise.

Jesus maintained a perfect unity with God throughout his life on earth because of the love which bound them together.

In Luke Chapter 11 verse 2 Jesus taught the disciples, “When you pray, say: Father”. That one word speaks of the relationship we can all have with our Heavenly Father and in which we can pray.

My Grandmother used to say, “Anyone can have a child, but it takes a special man to be a father.” I wholeheartedly agree.

The golden thread of God’s love and grace for us knows no limits. His gift of Jesus is the open door for all to an intimate “heart” relationship with our loving Heavenly Father for eternity.

We live in a society governed by material possessions but a father is not judged by his children on how much he earns or how many material goods he provides. What matters to his children is how much they are loved and how well he is being a father to them.

‘Xtratime’ Afterschool & Holiday Club XtraTime For children aged 3 to 11 years Monday to Friday, 3pm to 6pm (term time) We are based at Poringland Village Hall, which is situated near to the school.

Playgroup For pre-school children aged 2-5.

Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 3, 4 and 6 hour sessions available.

The large hall is used for snacks, crafts, construction, creative play, using the computers, film watching and book reading, etc. The small hall is used for physical play. We have access to a fully fenced, secure outdoor area , which we look to develop over a period of time, including a gardening area.

Poringland The Wednesday Group Our May meeting was well attended to hear Mr.David Morton speak to us on the history of Buckingham Palace. With some excellent slides coupled with his fantastic memory for names and dates he gave us a very full description of the birth of this royal great house and the affection with which it is held. Buckingham Palace, the worlds largest working palace with 775 rooms including 78 bathrooms maintained by 750 staff of which 450 “live in”; all under the jurisdiction of the Lord Chamberlain.

We meet next on June 3rd. for our annual outing, this year to Bury St. Edmunds, later on the Wednesday Group has a stall at The Gig and Sparks in the park 2. this is on the 27th.

Looking ahead to July 1st. we are invited, friends as well, to Nina’s home for our garden party, starting at 2pm Cakes etc. and gifts for the raffle would be very appreciated.

Wednesday Group meetings are held in the Octagon on the first Wednesday of the month; Nov. to March at 2pm.;April to Oct. at 7.30., if you are interested please just come along. you will be most welcome.

Later on wings were added around a central courtyard and when Queen Victoria ascended the throne it became the official residence of the British monarch. Apart from being continually enlarged one section was removed and rebuilt where it is still in situ: this of course is the Marble Arch, originally part of the palace it proved unsuitable for its intended use. During Victoria’s reign major structural additions were made including the famous balcony on which the royal family congregate to greet the public.

Macmillan Cancer Support My Mate Douglas

If you have ever gazed into your beloved dog’s eyes and felt that you found love there, you were right. Now a hormone has been found that indicates that we love our pets in the same way as we love our children – and the feeling is mutual: our pets love us back in the same way.

Researchers have found that the levels of the hormone oxytocin increase in both human and canine brains when a dog is gazing at its owner. Oxytocin is already known to play a strong part in triggering that feeling of unconditional love and protection that a parent and child enjoy.

Scientists believe that oxytocin may create a ‘neural feedback loop’ that has strengthened the bond between humans and dog for centuries. “They became attuned to our social cues in the way that young children are... When dogs are presented with an impossible task they quickly turn to humans to see what to do, just like children do.

Wolves don’t do that, even when raised in captivity.” The study was published in the journal Science.

Hormone that proves you really do love your dog like a member of the family Henry the Eighth began it all with his purchase of 4882 acres in 1532 to be known as the Kings land, in the next century James the First planted the mulberry trees. In 1703 the duke of Buckingham built the first large house on this site which subsequently was acquired by George the Third in 1761 to be used as a private residence for Queen Charlotte and from then on it was known as the Queen’s House.

I never met my mate Douglas-but I wish I had. He did me a huge favour.

When I was diagnosed with Cancer I was helped through the ordeal by an organisation he founded with just £10 in 1911. That’s what Douglas Macmillan did and it was, in my opinion, the best £10 he ever spent.

So I thought why not say thank you by sending him another £10?

One in two people are forecast to be diagnosed with Cancer; it could be you, or a loved one or a close friend. We are all affected.

I will never know who donated the cash that enabled Macmillan to help me but they were there when I needed them. I survived so those donors have my undying gratitude.

I don’t know who will benefit from my £10.

They might not yet even be diagnosed - but here’s the plan. Poringland Women’s Institute We returned to our usual home for our April meeting and our speaker was Hazel Gillingham, who gave us an incredibly interesting talk on 3 Remarkable WI Women. As a relatively new member, I found myself fascinated not only by the beginnings of the WI, but also in the bravery and uniqueness of the women who had the foresight to bring the WI on from its humble inception in Canada.

The 3 women that Hazel talked about were: Adelaide Hoodless, she was a founding member of the YWCA and also the Women’s Institute in Stoney Creek. Her reasons were personal – one of her children died at age 14 months from bad milk. Her idea was to educate and inform all women of the importance of domestic science.

Madge Watt came to the UK in 1913 from Canada and the first WI in the UK was born in Anglesey, Wales. She was the first President of the ACWW and helped to found the National Federation in 1917. By 1917, there were 140 WI’s in the UK and Madge helped to train VCO’s (WI Advisors). This role continues even today and the VCO’s are just as important as they were then.

The third remarkable WI woman was Lady Denman. Born Gertrude Mary Pearson and known as Trudie to her family. She was elected the first National Chairman in 1917.

She served this role until 1946. In 1945 the AGM decided to form its own college and it opened in 1948 – named after one of the most dedicated and inspirational women in the WI – Denman College!

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 10th June 2015 at 1930hrs at the Poringland Community Centre. Our speaker is Rosalind

Dates to remember DON’T FORGET the National Centenary AGM at the Royal Albert Hall will be screened live at the Community Centre on June 4th from 10.30am. This is a momentous occasion, the WI will be 100 years young and our most prestigious member, Her Majesty the Queen will be present! We hope to see you all there along with many friends from other groups.

Gig and Sparks in the Park This event is on June 27th 2015. We will be having a stall there – please come and visit us when you can.

Still lonely Are you lonely? If you are, you are not alone! It seems that in this era of instant mass communication, millions of us find that in fact we have less direct contact with other people.

A recent survey has found that almost four in ten of us suspect that we have LESS daily interaction with people whom we know than we did even five years ago. More and more, we phone or text rather than speak face to face.

The findings came out of The Big Lunch project, and follows warnings from ministers that Britain is facing an ‘epidemic’ of loneliness, as well among the young as the elderly.

The poll was conducted by Opinion. As one psychologist explained, loneliness can be temporary, but when it is prolonged, “it’s a serious issue.”

RECORD BREAKERS SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 2015 We are looking for volunteers aged 13-25 to help us during the Record breakers Summer Reading Challenge. We have a recruitment afternoon on Thursday 4th June 3-4.30pm or you can pick up a recruitment pack from a member of staff. We would like the volunteers to help register the children onto the reading challenge throughout the summer and to talk to them about the books they have been reading.

We would like as many children/families as possible to come along and help us the record of having a story read to as many people as possible. Libraries throughout Norfolk will be taking part.

Dementia Café A new Dementia Support Group is to start, at St. George’s Hall, Upper Stoke Holy Cross, on Monday, April 13th, from 10am until 12.00noon.

The first hour will be shared between the carers and those they care for and volunteer helpers. In the second hour the carers meet, in a separate room, to discuss all the subjects relevant to their situation. During this time the volunteers will ensure that those needing care are catered for.

Tea and coffee, at 50p/cup, will be available throughout the period, as will complimentary biscuits. All dementia suffers and their carers are welcome. When up and running these are amazingly helpful groups, particularly for the carers. If, as expected, the new group proves to be as successful as one running in Wymondham, they will be needing more volunteers.

Prison Fiction

In the UK, 60 per cent of prisoners are functionally illiterate. By providing free easyto-read books, SPCK’s Prison Fiction Project is helping prisoners to become confident readers, and supporting their rehabilitation.

Recent feedback from our beneficiaries includes: ‘A unique resource with a heart of gold... [it] will have helped them...’ (HMP Brinsford); ‘We used [your book] with a young person (14 years old) who has committed a lot of thefts... I’ve never experienced a YP wanting to use books like this.’ (Hillingdon YOS); ‘The books were very well received …’

Meet the Anglican Bishop for Sport A Bishop who once played hockey for England Schoolboys has been commissioned by the Archbishop of York to take on a new national sporting role in the Church of England.

Bishop Tony Porter, from the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, has become the Archbishops’ Sport Ambassador, working to strengthen links between the Church and sport at all levels. “My main work will be to encourage parish churches to be involved in the world of sport and for the world of sport to receive Christian ministry in a culture and language they understand,” said Bishop Tony, who won an Oxford Blue as well as playing for England Schoolboys. “I want the Church to be available pastorally and to take appropriate opportunities to share the good news of Jesus” The Archbishop, Dr John Sentamu, said: “It is no accident that St Paul uses the metaphor of running a race to describe the Christian life, where discipline and the support of others help us to see God doing more than we ever thought possible. I am delighted that Bishop Tony will be working to highlight that link between faith and sport some 2000 years after St Paul!”

Father’s Day Time to celebrate male role models In the UK, USA and Canada, the third Sunday in June is Father’s Day. It’s a good time for sons and daughters to take their father to his favourite restaurant, or to watch a favoured sport, or whatever else he enjoys doing.

How will you celebrate it this year? If your own father cannot be with you, is there a ‘spare’ father somewhere in your church or your circle of friends whose children cannot be with him, and who would welcome some special treat on the day?

How do these special days ever get started, anyway? Well, Father’s Day began because way back in 1909 there was a woman in Spokane, Washington, named Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. That year she heard a church sermon about the merits of setting aside a day to honour one’s mother. Mother’s Day was just beginning to gather widespread attention in the United States at this time. But Sonora Louise Smart Dodd knew that it was her father who had selflessly raised herself and her five siblings by himself after their mother had died in childbirth. So the sermon on mothers gave Sonora Louise the idea to petition for a day to honour fathers, and in particular, her own father, William Jackson Smart.

Sonora Louise soon set about planning the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane in 1910.

With support from the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA, her efforts paid off, and a ‘Father’s Day’ was appointed. Sonora Louise had wanted Father’s Day to be on the first Sunday in June (since that was her father’s birthday), but the city council didn’t have time to approve it until later in the month.

And so on June 19, 1910, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane.

Gradually, other people in other cities caught on and started celebrating their fathers, too.

The rose was selected as the official Father’s Day flower. Some people began to wear a white rose to honour a father who was dead, and a red one to honour a father who was living. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day - a permanent, national holiday.

Today, Father’s Day is a great time to celebrate any sort of male role models, like uncles or grandfathers, as well as dads.

Certainly Father’s Day has become a day for greeting card companies to rejoice, and sales of the most popular gifts for Dad (shirts, ties, and electric razors) increase considerably.

Perhaps most telling of all, though, is how children continue to see their fathers: in America, for example, more ‘collect calls’ to home are recorded on Father’s Day than on any other day of the year!

AgeUK Engage Newsletter Engage aims to keep you informed about issues elating to later life and what Age UK Norfolk can offer you, your friends and your family. We will also be telling you about our events and hope to inspire you to get involved with Age UK Norfolk to help make a positive difference in your community.

In this first issue, we have chosen to focus on two major reforms that will have a big impact on older people’s lives, the Care Act and the new pensions flexibility. These two topics have received a lot of attention in the media, but much of the coverage has been in sound-bite or headline form. It is important that people are aware of these reforms and know where to go for more information or support if needed and I hope you will find that we have covered the essential information in a straightforward way.

OPEN GARDEN SEASON 2015 Age UK Norfolk’s first Open Garden Season is nearly upon us, but it is not too late to take part. Whatever your garden size or design, join in and help celebrate the huge variety of gardens across this beautiful county while raising money to support older people and their carers in Norfolk. You might like to open your garden to the general public or hold a private event for friends. The season will run from 1 May to 31 July so you can open your garden as often as you wish.

Age UK Norfolk will be holding two events either side of the Open Garden Season.

We are delighted to have been invited by the Bishop of Norwich, The Rt Revd Graham James and Mrs Julie James to host an open day at the Bishop’s Garden on Sunday 17 May. Also, Harry and Rachel Buxton are holding a two day event in the grounds of Hoveton Hall on the 30 & 31 August.

Visitors to these events can explore the delights of these beautiful gardens, enjoy afternoon tea and other traditional fete activities.

Theis is a new information and advice service in South Norfolk aimed at over 65s who need extra help to live a happy and independent life at home. Age UK Norfolk is running weekly advice ‘surgeries’ at 13 trial GP practices in South Norfolk. GPs and practice nurses will be able to refer patients to the service, or people over 65 and their carers can book an appointment without referral if they wish.

Our trained advisors will discuss the person’s needs, offer help and advice and point them to other local services and support. NHS South Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group and Norfolk County Council are funding the service, up to February 2016 as part of their “Better Care for Norfolk” and “Strong and Well” programmes.

THE CARE ACT The Care Act, which came into effect on 1 April 2015, is a hugely significant reform that will affect anyone living in England who has care needs now and in the future. The majority of changes brought in by the Care Act will start from 1 April 2015, but some of the major changes are due to come in from 1 April 2016.

Justin Martyr (c. 100 – 165) First ever Christian philosopher

This apologist and martyr is known as the most important early ‘apologist’. He went on to offer a reasoned defence for Christianity, explaining that it was the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies. Justin’s aim was evangelism: he thought that pagans would turn to Christianity if they were made aware of Christian doctrine and practice.

He studied at Ephesus and Alexandria

Justin’s martyrdom took place in the reign of Marcus Aurelius, along with six other believers. At his trial, whose authentic record survives, he clearly confessed his Christian beliefs, refused to sacrifice to the gods, and accepted suffering and death. As he had previously said to the emperor: “You can kill us, but not hurt us.”
