An American Story May 20 at 8 p.m.

Courtesy of Mineta Legacy Project

Norman Mineta and His Legacy

A documentary portrait of the American statesman and trailblazer premieres this month on KMOS. Directed by Dianne Fukami and co-produced by Fukami and Debra Nakatomi, the film includes interviews with the two presidents under whom Mineta served as a cabinet secretary: Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican George W. Bush. Also interviewed is retired Republican Senator Alan Simpson, who formed a lifelong friendship with Mineta when they met as 11-year-olds at Heart Mountain, Wyoming, the U.S. concentration camp where Mineta and his family were incarcerated during World War II. Norman Mineta is a man of many firsts: the first Asian American mayor of a major city (San Jose, California); the first Japanese American from the mainland to be elected to Congress; and the first Asian American to serve in a presidential cabinet. But beyond these groundbreaking achievements, Mineta personifies the dreams and aspirations of many Americans. A U.S. citizen by birth, he was imprisoned by his own country for his Japanese ancestry, yet he steadfastly remained a patriot, leading a Congressional effort for an apology from the U.S. government and redress for Japanese Americans, 120,000 of whom were imprisoned during the war. That effort finally came to fruition when the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. During his 21 years in Congress, Mineta worked to right other wrongs. A coauthor of the 1991 Americans with Disabilities Act, Mineta pushed to make public facilities accessible after navigating San Jose in a wheelchair and realizing it was impossible to cross the street. Because of the ADA, streets around the country now have cutouts for wheelchair access. When Mineta was serving as Secretary of Transportation under George W. Bush, the president learned firsthand of Mineta’s time in a concentration camp. A few months later, in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the knowledge of what his cabinet secretary went through had an impact. “One of the important things about Norm’s experience is that sometimes we lose our soul as a nation,” said Bush. “The notion of ‘all equal under God’ sometimes disappears.” In 2006, Secretary Mineta resigned from the Bush administration. He had served more than five years, longer than any Secretary of Transportation in American history. In his three decades as a public servant, he had served as a city councilman, a mayor, an eleven-term congressman, and a cabinet member for both a Democratic and a Republican president. 6

Emilio and Gloria Estefan Library of Congress Prize for Popular Song May 3 at 8:00 p.m. May 6 at 11:00 a.m.

The event will feature performances by Gloria Estefan, as well as Jose Feliciano, Il Volo, Gladys Knight, Cyndi Lauper, Emily Estefan, and original cast members of “On Your Feet!”, and a special presentation by Quincy Jones — with Rita Moreno and Andy Garcia as hosts. The special was recorded on March 13, 2019 at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Constitution Hall in Washington, DC and produced by WETA; Bounce, a division of Concord Music Group; and the Library of Congress; in association with Latino Public Broadcasting. The Estefans symbolize the rich cultural diversity of the American musical experience. They are musical auteurs, creating a unique sound of Latin rhythms that transcends cultural boundaries, parlaying their creative genius into entrepreneurship and community activism, and propelling the careers of many of today’s Latino artists to stardom. During their more than 30-year career, they have built a musical empire and made listening to Cuban-infused music one of America’s favorite pastimes. Married since 1978, the Cuban-American Estefans started their extraordinary rise to global fame in 1985 with Miami Sound Machine, creating a unique sound that blended Latin and pop rhythms. Many of their iconic hits - including “Conga,” “Turn the Beat Around,” “Get on Your Feet” and “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” - reflected the perfect marriage of creative lyrics, high-octane rhythms and spirited vocals. In March 2018, “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” was named to the National Recording Registry, an exclusive group of sound recordings selected for preservation because of their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to the nation’s audio heritage. The Estefans have both been named BMI’s “Songwriter of the Year” and have garnered 26 Grammy Awards between them. Their life story and music were showcased in the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical “On Your Feet!,” which they executive produced. In addition to their musical talents, they are also successful entrepreneurs, philanthropists and humanitarians. The Estefans have received numerous awards, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. kmos.org

National Memorial Day Concert

May 26 at 7 p.m.

An American tradition honoring our heroes returns live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol for a special 30th anniversary broadcast. Hosted by Tony Award winner Joe Mantegna and Emmy Award winner Gary Sinise, PBS’ multi-award-winning event will feature an all-star lineup of actors and musicians, with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly. An all-star cast joins the military musicians listed below. The Military District of Washington works with Capital Concerts in coordinating the Department of Defense participation of the Premier Service Bands and Service Honor Guards. The U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters chorus performs a variety of music including traditional choral music, sea chanteys, patriotic fare, opera, Broadway and contemporary music. The chorus is frequently found at the center of our most important national events. They have played a vital role in comforting the nation in times of mourning. The Singing Sergeants, the official chorus of The United States Air Force, is one of the world’s most versatile and traveled choral organizations. Originally formed in 1945 from within the ranks of The United States Air Force Band, the chorus is now composed entirely of professional vocalists from leading colleges, universities and music conservatories throughout the world. The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets are the official fanfare ensemble for the President of the United States. Founded in 1959 and patterned after traditional British “fanfare” trumpet ensembles, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets were formed to add pageantry to official military ceremonies including 12 presidential inaugurals and State Arrivals for heads of state at The White House. In 1956, The U.S. Army Chorus was established as the vocal counterpart of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” and is one of the nation’s only professional men’s choruses. From its inception, The U.S. Army Chorus has established and maintained a reputation of excellence in the performance of male choral literature. Founded in 1957, the Soldiers’ Chorus is the vocal component of The United States Army Field Band of Washington, DC. This 22-member mixed chorus travels throughout the nation and abroad, performing both independently and jointly with the Concert Band. The Soldiers’ Chorus has performed in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, India, and throughout Europe. kmos.org
