Finding Your Roots - Season 5 7 p.m. Tuesdays

Today’s brightest personalities discover the surprising stories buried within their own families with host Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The roots of this season’s 24 guests cover the globe - from Samoa, Nigeria, Taiwan and Sicily to Iran, Ireland, India and Cuba - and almost everywhere in between. Their family trees are filled with compelling characters - slaves and kings, artists and entrepreneurs, abandoned children and missing parents, revolutionaries, soldiers, and a constant flow of ordinary individuals who did remarkable things, laying the groundwork for their successful descendants. Each episode weaves together these stories, gleaned from cutting-edge DNA analysis and old school genealogical detective work. Highlights include a search for Andy Samberg’s biological grandparents, the discovery of Michael Strahan’s deep European ancestry and the solution to a mystery that has plagued Ann Curry’s family for her entire life. At the center of it all is host and executive producer Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. Assembling the extensive family trees and family narratives alongside Dr. Gates are DNA expert CeCe Moore (Founder, The DNA Detective) and expert genealogist Johni Cerny (Founder, Lineages).

The Swamp: American Experience

8 p.m. January 15 & Noon January 18

Lawrence E. Will Museum of the Glades / Glades Historical Society

Learn the dramatic story of humanity’s attempts to conquer the Florida Everglades, one of nature’s most mysterious and unique ecosystems. Told through the lives of a handful of colorful and resolute characters, from hucksters to politicians to unlikely activists, The Swamp explores the repeated efforts to transform what was seen as a vast and useless wasteland into an agricultural and urban paradise, ultimately leading to a passionate campaign to preserve America’s greatest wetland. As the world copes with increasingly deadly weather events, The Swamp is a timely tale of the perils of mankind’s abuse of nature. Based in part on the book The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise by Michael Grunwald. Home to a profusion of plants and animals found nowhere else on the continent, Florida’s Everglades was an immense watershed covering the southern half of the Florida peninsula. But to most progress-minded Americans, the Everglades was a useless swamp filled with deadly diseases and vile reptiles. Entrepreneurs and politicians saw great potential in draining the Everglades “I have bought and turning the massive wetland into a profitable land by the acre, enterprise. and I have bought Philadelphia industrialist Hamilton Disston was the first land by the foot,” to make a serious effort to drain the Everglades. Governor said one purchaser, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, who took office in 1905, “but, my God, I have never bought promised to finish what Disston had started, selling a land by the gallon.” huge tract of the Everglades to land speculator Richard Bolles to keep his project on track. Promising that the whole of the Everglades would be drained in a year, Bolles sold thousands of parcels sight unseen to would-be farmers and settlers from all over the country. Many new landowners soon discovered that their investment was still underwater. As attempts to conquer the Everglades continued to wreak havoc on the environment, efforts increased to preserve and understand this vital ecosystem. Ernest Coe moved to Miami in 1925 and fell in love with what remained of the Florida Everglades. Creating a large national park became his life’s work, and he drew many other influential people into his cause, including Miami Herald writer Marjory Stoneman Douglas, who publicized the national park campaign and would become one of the most passionate and effective advocates for the Everglades. Their efforts paid off and, in 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed a bill authorizing the creation of Everglades National Park. To learn more about the effort to save the wetland, watch the four-part Battleground Everglades, 1:30 p.m. Fridays Jan.11, 25, Feb 1 and 8. kmos.org

Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World 9 p.m. January 21 on Independent Lens

Courtesy of Bruce Steinberg, courtesy of LinkWray.com

Take an electrifying look at the Native American influence in popular music, despite attempts to ban, censor and erase Indian culture. As the film reveals, early pioneers of the blues such as Charlie Patton had Native as well as African American roots, and one of the first and most influential jazz singers, Mildred Bailey, had a voice trained on Native American songs. As the folk rock era took hold in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Native Americans such as Peter La Farge and Buffy Sainte-Marie helped to define its evolution, and Native guitarists and drummers like Link Wray (left,) Jimi Hendrix, Jesse Ed Davis and Randy Castillo forever changed the trajectory of rock and roll. Rumble brings the music and musicians to life using innovative re-creations, archival concert footage and interviews. Their stories are told by some of the music legends who knew them, played with them and were inspired by them. Also featured are Native American poet and activist John Trudell, rock critic David Fricke, director Martin Scorsese and many others. Featured Native American Musicians include: Charley Patton (Choctaw/African American 1887 est.–1934): Mildred Bailey (Coeur d’Alene, 1907–1951); Link Wray (Shawnee, 1929–2005); Buffy SainteMarie (Cree, b. 1941); Jimi Hendrix (Cherokee/African American/Scottish, 1942–1970); Robbie Robertson (Mohawk, b. 1943); Jesse Ed Davis (Kiowa/ Comanche, 1944–1988); Brothers Pat (b. 1939) and Lolly (1939–2010) Vegas (Yaqui/Shoshone).

Victoria, Season 3 on Masterpiece

8 p.m. Sundays beginning January 13 Credit: Oscilloscope Laboratories

It is 1848, and revolution is breaking out across Europe. In Britain, one woman stands between order and chaos: Queen Victoria. Continuing the story of Victoria’s rule over the largest empire the world has ever known, Victoria, Season 3 introduces fascinating new historical characters, including the vainglorious Lord Palmerston, who crosses swords with the queen over British foreign policy. Also vexing the queen this season is Victoria’s devoted but troubled half-sister, Princess Feodora, who seeks refuge at Buckingham Palace due to political unrest back home in Germany. As Season 3 gets underway, Victoria is pregnant with her sixth child. But she has much else on her mind, chiefly the Revolutions of 1848, when the downtrodden throughout Europe begin agitating for the overthrow of aristocratic rule. In England, this discontent leads to Chartism, a set of demands for universal male suffrage, the secret ballot, equal representation for voters and other reforms that were considered radical by leading political figures during Victoria’s reign. As with many crusades, passions are aroused on both sides-sometimes violently. At the time, who knew if events might turn out like the French Revolution, which resorted to widespread use of the guillotine? Passion is also an issue in the bedroom at Buckingham Palace, where Victoria is reluctant to risk more pregnancies. Parents now of six, Victoria and Albert find themselves at odds about their offspring, especially the troubled Bertie, the role of the monarchy, and increasingly with each other.
