ON THE COVER This iconic photo was brought to us on earth by the crew of Apollo 8 - Jim Lovell, Bill Anders, and Frank Borman In December 1968 they flew an ambitious mission around the moon, pushing the limits of NASA’s plans, and potentially the capacity of the numerous contractors and vendors, to place humans on our barren satellite. They left earth’s orbit on December 21, and after reaching lunar orbit on December 24 the crew broadcast their Christmas wish to everyone on ‘the good earth’. This included a reading from the Book of Genesis and live video of the moon below them. Tune in for the full story of the mission as told by NOVA, on December 26 at 8 p.m.

Member News and Updates Thank you for another wonderful year – we wish you joy throughout the holidays, and a happy new year. We appreciate your support and feedback regarding our services and programming. The holidays are a time full of fun, warmth and celebration but they are also a time for us to take stock of what is important. As a public television station, KMOS-TV has been built on a bedrock of excellence, integrity and a cornerstone of curiosity. This welcoming home for the best public television has to offer, is funded by the very people who value it - YOU - the members of this community who choose to make this essential service our home. Nicole Hume Assistant Director for With that in mind, please consider making an additional gift Strategic Partnerships before the year is out – to enable us to continue to provide you hume@ucmo.edu with the service you love so much! Gifts are tax deductible and can be made by: sending a check, going online to kmos. org and clicking on the donate button, or simply phoning our office during business hours (1-800-753-3436). For residents of Columbia, KMOS is again taking part in the CoMoGives Campaign, which means your support would help KMOS on their leaderboard. Just visit www.comogives.com, find KMOS-TV, and follow the prompts. Community Update On October 29 a number of Jefferson City residents took advantage of our screening of the documentary Dawnland. It aired last month, but this preview and associated panel discussion provided additional context for the film, which told told the story of indigenous child removal through Maine’s Truth and Reconciliation process. KMOS thanks our panelists (l-r) Heather Ferguson-MS in Rural Sociology with emphasis on Community Development and special interest in Sociology of Native Education, Dr. Christine Boston-Lincoln University, DeAnna Alonso-Central Missouri Foster Care Adoption Association, and our moderator Deborah Word-Walden University and Capitol City Cinema Board Member. KMOS and Capitol City Cinema will work together to bring other timely and important films to central Missouri. The next film Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World, will be screened on Wednesday, January 16. It is an electrifying look at Native American influence in popular music, despite attempts to ban, censor, and erase Indigenous culture. The film brings music and musicians to life using innovative re-creations, archival concert footage, and interviews. Please check kmos.org for more information and announcements. kmos.org

Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Dec. 5 - Bombing Hitler’s Supergun Growing desperate in 1943, Hitler hatches plans for a diabolical weapon: a bank of “superguns” housed in a massive underground complex in Nazi-occupied northern France. Together the guns would be able to pump 600 high explosive shells 100 miles into downtown London every hour. This weapon could spell doom for the allies. But how can such a massive gun possibly work? Join NOVA as engineers, archaeologists and WWII historians investigate this fearsome weapon. Dec. 12 - Ultimate Cruise Ship Weighing 54,000 gross tons and stretching over two football fields, the Seven Seas Explorer is no ordinary boat. Join pioneering shipbuilders as they endeavor to build the ultimate cruise ship. It will be decked with the finest gold, marble, and crystal, and designed to offer guests the roomiest accommodations of any commercial cruise ship Dec. 19 - Ghosts of Stonehenge Who built Stonehenge and why? Discover how the last decade of groundbreaking archaeological digs has revealed major new clues to Britain’s enigmatic 5,000-year-old site and the people who constructed it. Dec. 26 - Apollo’s Daring Mission Apollo astronauts and engineers tell the inside story of Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon. The U.S. space program suffered a bitter setback when Apollo 1 ended in a deadly fire during a pre-launch runthrough. In disarray, and threatened by the prospect of a Soviet Union victory in the space race, NASA decided upon a radical and risky change of plan. 8

Hold the Sunset
8:30 p.m. Thursdays
John Cleese and Alison Steadman star in a new romantic comedy. Edith always puts herself last. But she’s been widowed for a while, and her two troublesome children have flown the nest. This is her chance to finally take care of herself. Phil is a retired businessman. His caustic sense of humour can’t hide the fact he loves Edith more than anything. So when she finally agrees to marry him, they’re all set to finally realise their dream – a move to another country, and a future filled with romantic walks on sun-kissed beaches. But then Edith’s son Roger crashes back into their lives. Fifty going on 12, Roger has had a mid-life breakdown and left his wife, children and job. He can’t even cope with Edith giving his childhood toy collection to charity, so it’s no wonder the stress of adult life has proved too much. And that’s just the tip of their troubles. Edith’s demanding daughter Sandra is pestering Phil for a business loan. A raffish former boyfriend from Edith’s past reappears. And, at Roger’s request, Edith’s old cleaner Mrs. Gale is tearing through the house, leaving a trail of chaos in her wake. Beset by this quirky cast of characters, Edith and Phil’s lives often explode into farce. All they wanted was a quiet retirement filled with sea and sand. Season 6 of Doc Martin December 6 at 9 p.m. Portwenn is buzzing with arrangements for the wedding of the Doc and Louisa. Will they finally tie the knot, or will the villagers have to put the confetti back in the box again? Martin Clunes is Martin Ellingham, and Caroline Catz is Louisa Glasson. kmos.org
