ON THE COVER KMOS and PBS will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking Beatles album with a new documentary, a look back at the creation and ongoing influence of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, released in 1967.

Hailed as a landmark achievement by critics worldwide, the album won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and ranks #1 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time as “the most important rock & roll album ever made.” Hosted by award-winning British composer, author, music historian and broadcaster Howard Goodall, Sgt. Pepper’s Musical Revolution features material never before accessible outside of Abbey Road Studios, including recordings of studio chat between band members and isolated instrumental and vocal tracks. It reveals the nuts and bolts of how the album came together, and provides insights into the choices made by The Beatles and George Martin. When The Beatles made the decision to stop playing live in August 1966, most of the world’s press concluded that they were finished. But far from finished, the band suddenly had the time to pour all of their energy into writing and recording, creating an album that broke ground in countless ways. Released in June 1967, after almost a year of secrecy, the album was an immediate sensation. Contact is published monthly for the benefit of KMOS-TV members and viewers. Every effort is made to ensure the schedule is accurate at press time, but some changes may be required to accommodate timely programs, producer changes or technical difficulties.

Member News and Updates This month the University of Central Missouri’s McClure Museum and Archives will host The Wall That Heals from Thursday June 29th through July 2nd 2017. The Wall is open to visitors 24/7, and will be located on the west lawn of the James C. Kirkpatrick Library on the corner of Maguire (Hwy 13) and Clark Street. In collaboration with this event, KMOS will host a preview Nicole Hume Membership/Major Gifts screening of the new Ken Burns documentary on The Vietnam War. This will be held on Friday, June 30 at 6.30 p.m. in UCM’s hume@ucmo.edu Twomey Auditorium (located in the Wood Building, to the north of The Walls exhibit.) In addition, there will be a panel discussion, with special guests, directly after the preview to reflect upon The Vietnam War. Please do let us know if you would like to attend this event by calling Karen O’Keefe at 800-753-3436 or email her (kokeefe@ucmo.edu) to register your name. On a related note, KMOS attended an awards presentation on April 26 for students (below) from Warrensburg High School who interviewed Vietnam-era veterans with UCM Social Studies student teachers. We appreciate the opportunity to join in this and other educational collaborations between local schools, UCM and KMOS. We at KMOS greatly value the supportive relationship we have with the central Missouri community. In April the KMOS development team attended and supported Chamber and ‘Main Street’ events in Warrensburg, Clinton, Sedalia and Columbia. We attended a Piccadilly Fund Raiser, monthly breakfast meetings, lunches and business after-hours events through the central Missouri Chambers. We connect with corporate, non-profit and community organizations far and wide and you too can connect with us at any time by contacting me at 660-543-4010 or hume@ucmo.edu. Another successful collaboration is with Scholastic, provider of books and educational materials worldwide. Together we have provided books to central Missouri families, and this year Scholastic has provided support for the KMOS PBS Writers Contest. This annual contest supports literacy for children K-3. KMOS and the families of our contestants thank Scholastic wholeheartedly for their support. The winning stories have been selected and are available to read at kmos.org. We will celebrate the finalists during an awards ceremony on June 10, after which time we will post photos and videos of the young authors reading their stories. KMOS will continue to work with the central Missouri community throughout this summer and we would love to meet with you and hear your thoughts about our programming. So please do visit with us when we are in your community!

Great British Baking Show 4 Returns June 16!

Credit:f Mark Bourdillon, © Love Productions, worldwide, all media in perpetuity

Known as much for its perfect “scrummy” patisseries as for its “soggy bottom” failures, the baking competition will air Friday nights at 8 p.m. The Great British Baking Show follows amateur bakers from diverse backgrounds who tackle culinary trials that increase in difficulty as the competition unfolds. In each episode, challenges come in three categories: a Signature Bake, to test the contestants’ creative flair and baking ability; a Technical Bake, in which challengers receive basic recipes with ingredient lists and minimal instruction; and the Showstopper Bake, designed to display depth of skill and talent.

The first two episodes will air back-to-back Friday, June 16 at 8 p.m. (repeated Sunday, June 18 at 3 p.m.), with the remaining episodes airing once each week. Tune in on the first weekend to meet the 12 bakers as they tackle a back-to-basics British classic, a popular cake with a fatless sponge and tricky chocolate work. The showstopper is sophisticated and high-end. With this cake, there’s nowhere to hide. At the conclusion, stay tuned to follow the 11 remaining bakers tasked with making 24 elaborately decorated biscuits; a biscuit that requires perfect piping; and a biscuit structure that demands precision bakingand learn a little more about each of the contenders. As in past seasons, contestants on The Great British Baking Show will be judged by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, two icons of British baking. Comedy duo Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc are the series hosts who keep the contestants and judges grounded, providing the right balance of humor, support and naughtiness. With nearly 60 years of cooking experience, Berry established herself as a leading food writer and broadcaster. Over her career, she has published 70 cookbooks that have sold millions of copies around the world. She was also appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) during the Queen’s 2012 Birthday Honors. The son of a baker, Paul Hollywood is one of the U.K.’s leading artisan bread makers. Though trained as a sculptor, he was persuaded by his father to join the family business and to combine both his artistic and culinary talents. Hollywood has worked in some of the world’s most exclusive hotels, including London’s Dorchester. He published the bestselling 100 Great Breads, which to date has been translated into seven languages. Comedy duo Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc are the series hosts who keep the contestants and judges grounded, providing the right balance of humor, support and naughtiness. 12

Grantchester, Season 3 on Masterpiece Sundays at 8 p.m. – Starts June 18 Back after last season’s cliffhanger ending for Reverend Sidney Chambers and the woman he loves, Amanda. What sort of future can there be for a vicar and a married woman carrying her husband’s child? Robson Green also returns as Sidney’s best friend, Inspector Geordie Keating, in seven new episodes that follow the improbable crime-fighting duo. Courtesy of Steffan Hill/BBC 2016 for Masterpiece

My Mother and Other Strangers on Masterpiece Sundays at 7 p.m. – Starts June 18 Set in rural Northern Ireland during World War II, this drama follows Rose Coyne and her family as the US Army sets up a base nearby. Rose finds herself acting as peacekeeper between the disgruntled locals and the airmen … and drawn to a handsome young captain.

Prime Suspect: Tennison on Masterpiece Sundays at 9 p.m. – Starts June 25 This cinematic three-part drama portrays the early career of one of television’s most iconic detectives, Jane Tennison - the role that established Dame Helen Mirren as a household name in the groundbreaking Masterpiece series Prime Suspect. Stefanie Martini stars. The Tunnel: Sabotage Thursdays at 9 p.m. – Starts June 15 Trail Elise (Clémence Poésy) and Karl (Stephen Dillane) as they investigate the abduction of a French couple from the Eurotunnel, leaving behind their young daughter. The case is complicated by a plane crash in the Channel, killing all on board. Remember Me Sundays at 9 p.m. – Starts July 16 Michael Palin (left) portrays pensioner Tom Parfitt, who stages a fall in his eerie Yorkshire home in order to escape into residential care, leading to a chilling and macabre mystery.

Endeavour, Season 4 on Masterpiece Sundays at 8 p.m. – Starts August 20 Shaun Evans returns for a fourth season as the young Endeavour Morse, before his signature red Jaguar but with his deductive powers already running in high gear. kmos.org
