ON THE COVER Celebrate American Independence!

On the evening of July 4 KMOS presents a celebration from the nation’s capitol, with a spectacular fireworks display over the Potomac River. More on page 11. Earlier in the day we present three one-hour programs that look at the founding of America through the eyes of our founding fathers. Inventing America features reenactors playing the roles of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and others as they discuss pivotal points in our nation’s early history. Making a Nation covers the lead-up to the Declaration of Independence, Making a Government tells the story behind the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and Liberty For All reveals how infighting lead to the Bill of Rights. News Regarding Contact

Beginning with the August edition KMOS will be working with different printing service. We will coordinate with them to continue timely publication and delivery of Contact with as little interruption as possible. We appreciate your patience during the process, and we thank everyone at UCM’s Center for Print Production for their hard work and attention to detail over the years. Contact is published monthly for the benefit of KMOS-TV members and viewers. Every effort is made to ensure the schedule is accurate at press time, but some changes may be required to accommodate timely programs, producer changes or technical difficulties.

Member News and Updates Happy Independence Day! We hope you get to be with family and friends on this very special occasion! Thank you so much to all of you who donated during the June pledge drive! Without YOUR donations, KMOS-TV could not continue to provide you with the programming we know you love so much. These include programming that focuses on muchneeded educational topics for children who are not able to go to preschool or enrichments classes - such as Word Girl, Pinkalicious and Peterrific, Ready Jet Go! and of course the iconic Sesame Street! Or programming that adults enjoy including those Sunday evening British comedies and dramas that we all enjoy so much!! Talking of British drama, recently I travelled back to my home town in the UK and was delighted to see and hear that Doc Martin, Mum, Endeavour and all of the British programming that we bring hume@ucmo.edu to you for your enjoyment, are as highly popular in the UK as they are right here in central Missouri! I was able to watch the latest Endeavour and let me tell you, there is crime, tension and personal change afoot amid the ‘gleaming spires’ and ancient city of Oxford coming your way. Lesley Manville, a British favorite, in Mum is a huge success and already enjoying rave reviews and a BAFTA and of course Martin Clunes continues to amuse and confound the locals in beautiful and scenic Portwenn in the southwest coast of England. Set your schedules for KMOS-TV! Nicole Hume Assistant Director for Strategic Partnerships

As it is now summer the KMOS-TV development team continues to be on the road reaching out to engage with the central Missouri community. For those who attended our recent Great American Read! screening in Columbia at Daniel Boone Regional Library we hope you enjoyed yourselves and perhaps you are reading one of those engrossing books from the list of 100. Everyone is free to check out our web page to see the list! We will continue to be visiting places in central Missouri this summer and fall, so if we are in an area near you, do come and chat with us about your favorite read and we will take a selfie (with your permission) for our social media pages! This month we will be heading to Clinton to the Ol Glory Days, a 3-day event celebrating Independence Day! We hope we see you soon! Eagle Bluffs: An Environmental Success Story

Photo: Kristopher Corbett

July 16 at 8 p.m. On the southwestern edge of Boone County is a scenic wetlands area managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, and made possible by the nearby city of Columbia.

Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area, on the eastern bank of the Missouri River, is comprised of 17 shallow pools with 30 miles of levees and 61 water control structures that effectively create and maintain important wildlife habitat, mitigating losses of some of Missouri’s historical wetlands. With ‘recycled’ wastewater from nearby Columbia as its primary source of water, the area provides excellent wildlife viewing and hunting opportunities. The rich soil marshes and crop fields attract local wildlife as well as migrating and wintering birds as it further cleans the water on its way through the watershed down the Missouri River. That this partnership between Columbia and MDC has yielded such an environmental gem is no surprise, but its origins were not so obvious. In this documentary produced by Columbia biologist Carl Gerhardt, the story of how Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area became so important began in the late 1980s when the city proposed to pipe its treated wastewater directly to the Missouri River. This prompted citizens in the area to push back and force the city council to consider alternatives beyond those recommended by consultants. Thus began a robust civic discussion that engaged much of the community in an effort to find the best solution to a problem. Although the process took years to work through, the plan was supported by a large majority of voters who passed the bond issue meant to pay for the project. KMOS invites you to tune in to learn the story, told through interviews with people who started out on opposite sides of the issue. This film was screened in February at the Missouri River Relief ’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival, and tells the story through narration and interviews with: Photo: Hailey Hofer/Columbia Missourian

Ray Beck, Former City Manager, Columbia Doug Elley, Former Mayor, Lupus Brad Jacobs, Former Ornithologist, MDC Tim James, Area Manager, MDC Clayton Light, Manager, Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area Mary Anne McCollum, Former Mayor, Columbia Hank Ottinger, Osage Group Sierra Club Lowell Patterson, Former Director of Public Works, Columbia

Hank Ottinger (left) and Doug Elley were the first H. Carl Gerhardt, producer of Eagle to raise the issue and advocate for wetlands as Bluffs: An Environmental Success Story, is water treatment for Columbia. a professor in the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Missouri as well as an accomplished wildlife videographer. Throughout the program you will see 40+ species of resident and migratory wildlife found at Eagle Bluffs CA and elsewhere in Missouri. kmos.org
