ON THE COVER This year Betty White celebrates 80 years in show business, officially the longest career in the history of TV. PBS commemorates her life and career in this new special airing August 21.
KMOS-TV Wood Building, Room 11 University of Central Missouri Warrensburg, MO 64093
While Betty ranks among the most-beloved figures in American life, her legacy is much deeper than most realize. She was the first woman to produce a national TV show; the first woman to star in a sitcom; the first producer to hire a female director; and the first woman to receive an Emmy nomination. In fact, she is the first woman to ever appear on television, given her performance on an experimental broadcast in the late 1930s. The film is packed with clips from her long career, including her role as the bawdy Sue Ann on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, her opposite turn as the innocent Rose on Golden Girls, and her more recent part as and the worldly Elka on Hot in Cleveland. Among the stars included in this program are Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Valerie Bertinelli, Carl Reiner, Tina Fey, Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, Valerie Harper, Lisa Edelstein, Justina Machado, and many others.

Keep your eyes out this Fall for a fourpart series that explores the extraordinary world created by Native Americans through an unprecedented combination of science, scholarship, and traditional indigenous knowledge. Narrated by Robbie Robertson (Mohawk and member of the famed rock group The Band), each hour will explore Great Nations and reveals cities, sacred stories and history long hidden in plain sight. In what is now America’s Southwest, indigenous people built stone skyscrapers with untold spiritual power and transformed deserts into fertile fields. In upstate New York, warriors renounced war and formed America’s first democracy 500 years before the Declaration of Independence, later inspiring Benjamin Franklin. kmos.org

The Everly Brothers: Harmonies from Heaven Premieres August 18 at 8 p.m. Known as the brothers who were “born to harmonize,” the Everly Brothers quickly rose to fame thanks to training from their musically inclined father, Isaac “Ike” Everly, and an unquestionable talent for singing. This new documentary celebrates the Everly Brothers’ impact on America’s up-and-coming rock music scene in the mid-20th century. From their small-town radio debut on The Everly Family Show, to the eventual disbanding of the duo, to their reunion concert in 1983 at the Royal Albert Hall, this music special explores the career, success and impact of the talented group. Fusing their interest in black gospel, jazz, blues, and country and western music, the duo created their own distinct sound that emphasized close, two-part harmonies over rocking guitars. This unique mix encouraged bands like The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles to experiment with their sound. As influential session guitarist Waddy Wachtel notes: “The reason why we all do what we do is ‘cause we heard [The Everly Brothers] and wanted to do it.” This documentary features musical clips from many of their most famous songs including “Bye Bye Love,” “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bird Dog,” “Cathy’s Clown,” and “Problems” as well as new interview footage with surviving brother Don and archival interviews with Phil. There are also interviews with several artists they influenced - Art Garfunkel, Keith Richards, and Graham Nash, who tell the remarkable story of how two Midwestern country boys became some of the most influential musicians in the history of rock ’n’ roll. To whet your appetite for Everly Brothers music, visit the Missouri State Fair for twice daily (August 14-18) performances by The Everly Set (Sean Altman and Jack Skuller.) To learn more about these and other free concerts, visit www.mostatefair.com.
The Bee Gees: One Night Only August 18 at 9:30 p.m. August 20 at 8:30 p.m. The Bee Gees are one of the best-selling music groups of all time, with hits spanning multiple decades and genres of music. With just one surviving member of the band left, Barry Gibb, fans can only relive the magic of this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-group through the rich catalog of music they have left behind. Filmed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on November 14, 1997 this is a spell-binding journey through some of the best disco and pop hits of all time. Complete with extravagant lighting and an appearance by Olivia Newton-John, this concert features an entertaining set list filled with the group’s famous, soaring three-part harmonies. Fans will enjoy such hits as “You Should be Dancing/Alone,” “Massachusetts,” the funky flare of “I’ve Just Got to Get a Message to You” and the popular, crowd-rocking favorites “Night Fever/More than a Woman” and “Lonely Days.” The program also features a mix of more intimate hits such as “Words” and “Morning of my Life.” Highlights include video footage of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, and a special tribute to Olivia Newton-John, one of the brightest stars of the ‘70s and ‘80s, with the internationally beloved “Grease.” The concert closes with “How Deep is Your Love,” complete with a Gibb family photograph slideshow, ending with another John Travolta Saturday Night Fever flashback, “You Should Be Dancing.” kmos.org

Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Explore the people and animals of Australia’s Kimberley region in North West Australia, a vast, rugged and remote wilderness bursting with character. As large as California, Kimberley has a population of only about 40,000 people, who live alongside animals that have superbly adapted to the harsh and beautiful extremes of their habitat. Filmed over the course of two distinct seasons, Australia’s vast North West corner is a startling landscape, one so ancient that, in parts, it predates life on the planet. It can appear arid and empty, but is filled with animals that have adapted to its harsh climate. Many are nocturnal, well camouflaged or prone to secrecy, from creatures reminiscent of the ancient landscape, like the saltwater crocodile, owner of the world’s most powerful jaws, to the most delicate of marsupial mice. The Outback captures the life of these animals over the course of the dramatic wet and dry seasons that dictate their cycles of life. August 1 - The Kimberley Comes Alive The Kimberley region in North West Australia boasts some of the most spectacular wilderness in existence. It’s a land where humans and animals live in dangerous, and exquisite, proximity. While rodeos take place, archaeologists are led through remote wilderness by traditional owners, revealing breathtaking galleries of ancient rock art. Out at sea, elite athletes dive the ocean depths in the name of the world’s most spectacular pearl, risking dangerous encounters with curious giants. August 8 - The Dry Season
August 15 - Return of the Wet
Windjana Gorge is a pristine oasis where brave humans wade into crocodile-infested water in the name of science. On the coast thousands of shorebirds arrive from the world’s longest single migration.

Leonard Cohen: Tower of Song
August 19 at 8 p.m.
Enjoy this moving concert tribute to the globally recognized icon, poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen. Organized by his family to honor the last wishes of the prolific musician, this is a public celebration of their father’s life and work. Filmed at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Nov. 6, 2017, one year after Cohen’s death, Tower of Song brought together artists and fans alike to remember the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. World-class performers such as Sting, Elvis Costello, and Lana Del Rey paid tribute through personal renditions of Cohen’s most recognizable songs. “Dance Me to the End of Love,” “Hallelujah,” “Suzanne,” “Bird On a Wire” and “Democracy” are all showcased with the help of a 24-piece orchestra. Rare archival footage of Cohen in his final days also adds to the touching homage. “My father left me with a list of About Leonard Cohen* instructions before he passed: ‘Put Born September 21, 1934 in Montréal, me in a pine box next to my mother QC, Cohen was one of the most iconic and father. Have a small memorial Canadian artists of the 20th century. He for close friends and family in Los Angeles…and if you want a public constantly probed the human condition, event do it in Montreal.’” exploring themes of love, loss, death and his commitment to his art. His narrowSinger-songwriter Adam Cohen ranged, gruff voice deepened with age, and his reliance on simple melodies complimented the depth of his lyrics. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, the US Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Folk Music Walk of Fame. He also received the Glenn Gould Prize, eight Juno Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and numerous other honors. *Adapted from the information on www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/leonard-cohen-emc/
