K&M Contracting Inc. relies on Komatsu Intelligent Machine Control equipment to improve workflow and performance on its turnkey projects.

Keith Bauer, owner of K&M Contracting Inc., and his wife, Maureen, have spent the past three decades building their company into a trusted name in New Jersey’s commercial and industrial construction scene. While Keith oversees operations in the field, Maureen plays a vital role behind the scenes, managing bookkeeping and ensuring the business’s financial stability. Established in 1994, the company has grown steadily without advertising, relying instead on reputation and referrals.

“Our success comes down to simple things,” Keith said. “Answer your phone, be responsive, and deliver on your commitments. That builds trust, and trust leads to more work.”

Operating out of Long Valley, New Jersey, K&M Contracting serves the entire state, parts of Pennsylvania, and New York, with occasional projects across the country for key clients. The company specializes in turnkey sitework, from underground utilities to grading and asphalt preparation, focusing exclusively on commercial and industrial projects.

“Maintenance work is often where it starts,” Keith noted. “Taking care of properties connects us with the right people and opens the door to larger sitework projects.”

With a workforce of nearly 50 employees, K&M Contracting prides itself on retaining long-term team members. Many employees have been with the company for 15 to 20 years, a testament to the firm’s commitment to its people and culture.

Increased efficiency with IMC

Much of K&M Contracting’s operational efficiency stems from its adoption of top-tier equipment. Since 1999, the company has worked with Komatsu distributors and Komatsu Company Stores East, purchasing more than 50 machines. What began with a plate tamper has evolved into a robust fleet of equipment.

“Our first big purchase was a Komatsu PC160 excavator in 2012,” recalled Keith. “Since then, we’ve added everything from PC35 mini excavators to PC490 excavators, dozers like the D61PXi-24, and WA320 wheel loaders.”

The introduction of Intelligent Machine Control (IMC) equipment, such as Komatsu D51PXi-24 and D61PXi-24 IMC dozers and a PC210LCi IMC excavator, further spurred K&M Contracting’s

Mining for the future

Reading Anthracite Company supplies high-quality anthracite carbon for critical global industries amid shortages.

Reading Anthracite Company has been a cornerstone of the carbon industry since its founding in 1871. Over the years, the business has undergone significant transformations while maintaining its heritage as a family-owned operation. In 1961, the Rich family acquired the company, marking the beginning of a multigenerational legacy in mining. Today, Reading Anthracite is based in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and is the largest producer of anthracite in the United States.

“We’ve persevered through industry fluctuations to remain a family-owned and -operated business,” said Will Rich, Vice President of Business Development and a fourth-generation leader. “Our legacy is something we take immense pride in.”

“We’ve persevered through industry fluctuations to remain a family-owned and -operated business.”

-Will Rich, Vice President of Business Development, Reading Anthracite Company

Based in the heart of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s anthracite region, the company operates across five counties. This area is unique in its geology, holding the only anthracite reserves in the United States. Reading Anthracite is the largest reserve holder in the region.

“The anthracite region is unlike any other place in the world,” Rich emphasized. “Mining here is like walking through time—we still uncover remnants of 19th-century mining, from railroad ties to old equipment. It’s a reminder of the region’s deep history in anthracite mining.”

Anthracite, known for its high carbon content and clean burning properties, is critical for industries like titanium refining and steel manufacturing, which underpins global infrastructure, energy production and national security. The company’s mining process is both intricate and efficient, involving surface mining techniques such as truck-and-shovel operations, dragline excavation, and advanced anthracite-washing systems.

“Anthracite typically runs between 80% and 86% carbon,” Rich noted. “We wash it to

Empowering performance with maintenance plans

Explore the enhanced benefits of managing heavy equipment using Komatsu Care and My Komatsu.

In the construction and heavy equipment industry, efficient machinery management is critical for driving productivity and cost-effectiveness. Komatsu offers customers a unique suite of factory-backed maintenance plans and telematics capabilities.

Komatsu Care Plus

Preventive maintenance is the most important factor to keep your equipment running with minimal downtime. With Komatsu Care, recommended service is automatically scheduled by your local dealer. Your enrolled fleet maintenance is now managed by your dealer as a business partner, helping to reduce the burden on fleet managers and owners.

With Komatsu Care, the local dealer location is notified in advance of maintenance coming due, allowing for scheduling that aligns with your needs. Follow-up reporting on actionable items and fault code information can now be relayed. This proactive approach to machine management means dealers can become your partners in driving your equipment’s uptime.

Services include oil sampling analysis, genuine oils, filters, a 50-point inspection and travel. You can feel assured knowing that a

Komatsu-certified technician has assessed your equipment to confirm it performs as designed. A 50-point inspection is designed to identify areas that require attention to help reduce the risk of unexpected downtime and lost production.

Komatsu Care’s fixed maintenance cost for the duration of coverage also helps equipment managers and owners effectively forecast and bid on new jobs. By understanding the cost of maintenance per operating hour — in conjunction with fuel costs and operator wages — a true operating cost per machine hour can be factored into the bid process. Having the confidence to know maintenance costs will not change during the plan term also helps to control for risk when bidding long lead approval work.

Komatsu Care enrollment helps owners manage maintenance and labor costs with parts planning. The supporting dealer is now the stocking location for all the filters and fluids for each service, so there is no need to send a company employee to get the required service parts for the equipment.

Data-driven solutions

Smart Construction suite can help you increase productivity, track it and make critical decisions that affect it faster.

Data is a driving force behind making critical decisions that can potentially have a major impact on construction companies’ bottom lines. With new machinery and technology, data is more accessible and faster to get than ever before.

“Machine intelligence that collects data and software that gives users the ability to access it via the cloud from practically anywhere and at anytime continues to increase exponentially,” said Jason Anetsberger, Director, Customer Solutions at Komatsu.

“Users can visualize production, collect as-built data and update plans remotely in real or near-real time. That promotes a more proactive approach to decision-making that factors into project-scheduling adjustments and affects profitability.”

A good example

Anetsberger used an example that included multiple Komatsu Smart Construction solutions such as Intelligent Machine Control (IMC) dozers and excavators with factory-integrated GPS grade control and 3D Machine Guidance, which can be added to traditional excavators and is now a factory-install option on some newer machines.

“Those machines are collecting data in real time, and that is aggregated into our Smart Construction Dashboard solution that gives

users a clear picture of the current as-built,” noted Anetsberger. “You can easily track information such as how much material has been moved, length of trench dug and more. In addition to making adjustments that affect productivity, you can use that information to document the project and prove it was built to plans with little to no surveying. If a change in plans occurs, Smart Construction Remote lets you send the plan update directly to the machine without the need to drive to the site, saving time and expense.”

Anetsberger continued, “We recently had a first-time technology user on a project utilizing a PC490LCi-11 IMC excavator and Dashboard. The project involved digging underwater and was on a site where drone flights to survey weren’t allowed. The contractor did a daily as-built and reported it to the site’s owner and the state department of ecology. It proved a huge success to all, especially the contractor who completed what was scheduled to be a 45-day excavation in 20 and had an accurate representation of the finished job. They will now use a D61i IMC dozer and Dashboard to fill in the site, put it to final grade and complete a new as-built.”

Adding solutions

Komatsu IMC machines, 3D Machine Guidance, Dashboard and Remote are part of Komatsu’s Smart Construction suite of solutions designed to increase efficiencies. Anetsberger offered some recommendations for determining what Smart Construction solution makes the most sense for your operation, providing some helpful tips for how to figure out what solutions you need and when is the right time to add them. All the solutions can be accessed and viewed through your My Komatsu account.

“IMC machines were our original solution, and we still recommend them as a starting point on your Smart Construction journey,” said Anetsberger. “3D Machine Guidance — formerly Retrofit is another great option, as it adds an indicate-only system to legacy machines or new machines without IMC. If you have those, adding Dashboard and Remote are logical next steps to make a powerful combination.”

To determine your next steps, Anetsberger recommends a further assessment of your goals and asking questions such as:

• Do you want faster, more accurate mapping and progress tracking?

• Do you want to move to 3D digital plans and combine drone data with 3D design data to confirm quantities?

• Do you want better labor management and cost tracking and be able to do it remotely?

One option is Smart Construction Office, a scheduling and management solution that serves as a central hub for all your jobs and can help replace manual production and cost tracking with streamlined daily automation that delivers timely updates, insights, auto-forecast schedules and cost estimates throughout a project’s lifecycle. It also has an artificial intelligence project assistant known as Carmen that works in real time scanning and analyzing information and providing recommendations to keep projects on time and on budget.

Additional Smart Construction solutions include:

• Design — Lets you move from rolled-up plans to a digital design file with Komatsu’s 3D generation service, so you have accurate data that is easily shared, replicated and updated

• Drone — Delivers high-precision mapping that can be done 50% faster than a walking survey; drone mapping helps with planning, sends data as you progress and gives you information that you can turn into efficiencies and better reporting

• Field — Connects humans, machines and materials to automate data collection on the jobsite, so you can accurately analyze your operational costs and efficiencies in real time

• Fleet — Collects the data you need to help optimize your fleet and track production, all on a mobile app

• Base/Rover — Functions as an RTK base station or RTK rover for collecting data, staking features and measuring surfaces relative to 3D designs; works seamlessly with Komatsu IMC machines and Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance systems

“There are so many easy ways to implement technology solutions into your operations,” concluded Anetsberger. “We encourage anyone who wants to streamline and optimize their operations to learn about Smart Construction solutions by talking to their distributor about how to get started.” ■

Building on success

Versatility and excellent visibility make Komatsu D51-24 dozers a popular choice with customers looking for a dozer to handle multiple tasks.

Seeing objects close to a dozer’s blade can dramatically increase jobsite efficiency and production. That’s one reason why Komatsu’s slant-nose dozers, which position the operator forward 20 inches compared to older standard dozers, have been a popular choice since they were introduced in 2007 with the first D51.

“Having that visibility really helps improve confidence and performance, so operators love the slant-nose design,” said Rafal Bukowski, Product Marketing Manager, Dozers, Komatsu. “That’s why it was introduced on additional dozers, including the latest standard and Intelligent Machine Control D51-24 models.”

“Its compact design with big dozer features makes it ideal for applications from grass to grade."

Product Marketing Manager, Dozers, Komatsu

Bukowski added that the D51-24 models feature a dual-path hydrostatic transmission (HST) that gives them excellent maneuverability and performance on residential, utility, ditching and drainage, site prep and a wide range of additional jobsites. It delivers independent power to each track, smooth speed and direction changes and enhanced maneuverability for tight turning and counter-rotation.

“The D51s are very versatile and give customers a great combination of heavy pushing and fine grading ability,” said Bukowski. “You can use them on practically any jobsite and get solid production. The D51 bridges the gap between power, precision and fuel efficiency.”

Reliable and durable

Reliability and durability are built into the D51-24 dozers, which come standard with a Parallel Link Undercarriage System (PLUS) with rotating bushings, a triple labyrinth final drive and a debris shield that helps increase undercarriage longevity and lowers repair and maintenance costs. The final drive creates a restricted path for debris, while the shield directs debris away from it and the floating seal area.

Komatsu improved the durability of these dozers by using heavy plate steel for the

nose, hydraulics and fuel tanks. The dozer frame is purpose-built for efficient energy transfer between the blade, undercarriage, engine and transmission, enhancing machine responsiveness and longevity.

The U-frame is a full steel casting with reinforced mounting points, so blade forces are distributed evenly, reducing stress and wear. Reinforced moldboards on the blades provide greater wear resistance.

The D51PX-24 features a high-capacity 4.4-yard blade with a thicker front plate. The blade pitch is manually adjustable, increasing productivity. Operators can choose from three blade modes (“fast,” “fine,” “normal”) to match conditions and preferences. For instance, “fast” mode increases blade speed while using the same amount of lever movement.

“If you want a good all-around dozer, either with or without Intelligent Machine Control, a D51 remains one of the best,” said Bukowski. “Its compact design with big dozer features makes it ideal for applications from grass to grade. We encourage contractors of all sizes to consider the D51 and contact their distributor to learn more about the added features that can further increase production and efficiency.” ■

Four new Komatsu excavators boost reach and are easily customizable to a variety of demolition applications.

Komatsu has four new demolition excavators in the North American market with the launch of its PC490HRD-11 high-reach demolition model and its PC290LC-11, PC360LC-11 and PC490LC-11 models with straight booms. The excavators have been successfully operating in the European market for more than 20 years, providing customers the opportunity to increase jobsite efficiency.

The PC490HRD-11 demolition excavator features the K100 boom change system that allows operators to quickly change the configuration from within the cab and without manually disconnecting either the hydraulic or electric lines, enabling operators to begin working within minutes of arriving at the jobsite and minimizing time for boom changes as the job progresses. The machine can reach up to 104 feet and includes a full demolition guarding package, excellent visibility from a 45-degree tilting cab, and an informative human/machine interface panel.

The PC290LC-11, PC360LC-11 and PC490LC-11 straight boom excavators boost reach, providing 22% to 26% more reach than standard excavators, with easy customization

that allows users to program up to 15 different tools. The machines come with factory-installed plus-two hydraulic attachment piping.

Heavy-duty guarding

The demolition excavators are built to tackle tough demolition jobs with robust protection elements like heavy-duty revolving frame and under guards, bucket cylinder guard, boom light protection guards, and reinforced attachment linkage.

Komatsu’s additional product line of Lehnhoff quick couplers and Montabert demolition attachments can be paired with the excavators to further increase machine versatility. All attachments are distributed by the Komatsu Attachment Group.

“Komatsu understands that the demolition industry is a fast-growing and evolving segment that demands new product innovation,” said Bruce Boebel, Director of Products and Services, Komatsu. “We are excited to be able to now provide this family of demolition excavator solutions in support of the industry, offering the ability to quickly customize for different working environments and provide versatility and efficiency at the jobsite.”

Komatsu’s family of demolition excavators is

A decade of success

Fourth-generation hydrostatic transmission designed to deliver high performance in a variety of applications proves popular.

Komatsu introduced its WA320-8 about 10 years ago, and during the past decade, very few changes or updates have been made to the 165-horsepower wheel loader. Product Marketing Manager Reuben Talukdar contends that this is a testament to the WA320-8’s performance, which has made it popular among construction companies wanting a versatile loader.

“The WA320-8 is among the best-selling loaders in the industry because of its reliability and productivity,” said Talukdar. “What really stands out is the fourth-generation hydrostatic transmission that was introduced with it. Komatsu really had it dialed in from a performance and a service standpoint, so there has been no need to change it. Customers like its responsiveness, how you can aggressively drive into a pile and the speed with which the boom raises.”

“The WA320-8 is among the best-selling loaders in the industry because of its reliability and productivity.”

The WA320-8’s hydrostatic transmission (HST) easily adapts to a variety of tasks, getting precise speed and directional control that enables the operator to easily handle different materials effectively and navigate tight, confined areas. Auto-shifting provides smooth operation and allows operators to work efficiently and productively. The HST helps minimize wheel slippage, promoting extended tire lift with a smooth variable-speed traction control system that helps keep operators in control in virtually all working conditions. They can use “auto” mode, which automatically adjusts without operator input to keep loads stable.

“With an electronically controlled swashplate, there is no gear shifting,” said Talukdar. “It’s a smooth increase in speed coming out of a pile, and with dynamic braking, as soon as the operator lets off the gas pedal, the loader stops, which increases control.”

Parallel-lift linkage

The 34,000-pound-plus WA320’s parallel-lift linkage, with auto tilt-in to simulate a Z-bar,

can be used in any application, from pallet handling to hard digging. Additionally, an optional quick coupler is useful in applications where operators need to rapidly change attachments from buckets to forks, grapples or for running a hydraulic-driven attachment. It features an “s” mode that gives operators maximum control in slippery conditions. It also has a “max” mode that can be activated with a switch on the mono levers, enabling full torque to the drive tires when desired.

Latest updates — continued evolution Komatsu continues to improve this workhorse and solid performer with enhanced capabilities, including:

• The option to use a new "coasting" mode that simulates the behavior of a torque converter, so the machine gradually slows down

• A new single-plane oil cooler (previously three) that lowers temperatures in high-debris environments by reducing clogging and improving airflow

• Improved rollover protection with an updated cab that increases ROPS capacity by 13.4%

• Added capacity that allows for solid tire installation, added guarding and other waste application options ■

Tips to help keep operating costs down

Find lower fuel costs with five timely tips.

Fuel is a necessity and a major expense item for construction companies. As prices spike, so does the possibility that your profitability might take a hit, but there are ways to help lower your fuel bill and operating costs.

Reduce

your idle time

Idling is necessary in certain situations, such as warming up a machine and before shutting down at the end of the day. It could also be justified when you are in high-production activities that involve near-constant movement, such as loading trucks with an excavator and charging crushers with a loader, where restarting would negatively affect productivity.

Telematics helps fleet managers easily track idle time by machine and for their entire equipment lineup. If they see excessive idling, they can then address that with operators and other on-site personnel.

An easy way to help control idle time during unproductive periods is to use the auto idle shutdown function, a feature available on most Tier 4 Final machines. Your machines’ operations and maintenance manuals can

guide you on how to set it—the minimum is five minutes before the shutdown begins in most cases—and your local dealer can help, too.

Heed Eco Guidance and choose the right mode

Komatsu’s ECO Guidance provides information to operators on energy-saving operations that help control fuel consumption. It is a feature on most Komatsu machines introduced during the past 10 years. Idling stop guidance is among the suggestions that may be available with ECO Guidance. With this option, typically if no operation is performed for more than five minutes and the engine is idling, the idling stop message is displayed on the monitor.

ECO Guidance is most useful when you choose the most effective mode. ECO Guidance might also suggest operating in “economy” instead of “power” mode.

• The “economy” mode promotes enhanced fuel efficiency but maintains working equipment speed for light-duty work, similar to the “power” mode

• Excavators and dozers are mainly used to dig and move naturally compacted soils,

and in most instances, “economy” mode will get the job done while controlling fuel burn

• The “power” mode is advantageous in heavy-duty applications, such as when a wheel loader must climb a 10% ramp with a full bucket or when an excavator moves hard material like heavy clay

Consider a hybrid

Another thing to consider is purchasing or renting a hybrid excavator, such as the Komatsu HB365LC-3. Hybrid excavator technology is designed to provide a fast and responsive swing, and when swinging, to have all available hydraulic power sent to the boom, arm and bucket to help improve cycle time and enhance production.

Properly size and match equipment for the task

Bigger is not always better, and using a large machine to do a job that a smaller one could do can increase fuel usage and your overall operating costs. Fleet managers need to consider several factors when using

equipment, including choosing the right size for the job.

An important component of rightsizing is matching equipment that will be working together in the same application. For example, loading and hauling equipment need to match in order to drive optimum efficiency. If a loader is too large for a truck, or vice versa, the project will likely not be as efficient.

Use advanced technology

GPS-based grading helps promote productivity and control per-yard costs to move material. During the past two decades, GPS technology has advanced significantly, with integrated machine control helping to drive lower costs associated with replacing cables, masts and additional satellites.

Many of today’s machines with integrated GPS grade control also feature additional technologies, such as Komatsu’s proactive dozing control, that help operators get to grade more efficiently and at lower costs, including better fuel usage. Technology is also helping new operators become proficient at moving dirt faster than ever before. ■

A hybrid machine such as Komatsu’s HB365LC-3 excavator can help conserve fuel significantly.

Developed with contractor input

PC210LCi-11 IMC 2.0 excavator helps control for overdigging and delivers versatility in a compact, easily transported size.

Are you looking to help lessen the skill gap between new and experienced operators and quickly support your bottom line? Komatsu’s Intelligent Machine Control (IMC) is designed to do just that. IMC is part of the company’s suite of Smart Construction products, services and digital solutions incorporating advanced, proprietary machine technology. Developed with input from leading construction companies, IMC gives contractors sophisticated, productivity-enhancing automation along with cutting-edge jobsite design.

Komatsu’s IMC 2.0 lineup includes the 165-horsepower PC210LCi-11 excavator. A smart choice for contractors who need a versatile solution that still offers an excellent range, the PC210LCi-11 is Komatsu’s smallest IMC excavator. It is designed for digging in exacting applications such as precise footings, retention ponds and utility work. Its factory-integrated system helps control for over-excavation and empowers operators to dig straight to grade quickly and accurately.

“It’s great for a range of applications, and it especially shines in utility work where precise trenching is involved,” said Nathaniel Waldschmidt, Product Manager, Excavators, Komatsu. “Our technology won’t let operators dig past target elevation, so having to put material back or replace it with expensive fill can be virtually eliminated. That also helps newer operators get to grade fast and confidently.”

Automated features

Operators can finish grades quick and with precision by using bucket angle hold control, which automatically holds the bucket angle to the design surface during arm operation. This enables finished grading using only arm input.

“With bucket angle hold, they can curl the bucket all the way in and use the heel to really smooth out the final pass,” explained Waldschmidt. “That just helps increase the ease of operation and helps improve final grading accuracy.”

The PC210LCi-11's auto tilt bucket control assists the operator in aligning the bucket parallel with the slope, so finish grading can be accomplished without having to align the machine with the target surface.

“You can run a tilt bucket and increase efficiency because the bucket will tilt automatically directly to the plane of the design surface,” stated Waldschmidt. “It makes complex grading a lot faster and easier.”
