A legacy built out of necessity A lack of backhoes led to the formation of Alexander Excavation Inc., a three-generation Wyoming family firm focused on earthwork services Customer snapshot Company: Alexander Excavation Inc. T
he early 1980s were good for building in Wyoming, and the boom played a big role in the founding of Alexander Excavation Inc., according to second-generation owner and President Wade Alexander. His father, Jerry, started the Lander-based firm in 1981. “My dad was a builder, and with the rush on, it was really busy, so there were no backhoes available to dig foundations,” Wade shared. “It was so busy, you had to wait months to get a hole dug. He bought a machine of his own and started digging. He realized that he could make more digging foundations than building houses, so he kicked off an excavation company.” “We do all types of dirt work, either as a general contractor or a subcontractor.” – Wade Alexander, Owner/President, Alexander Excavation

Alexander Excavation uses Komatsu intelligent machine control (IMC) equipment, including D71PXi-24 dozers.
Growing up, Wade worked with his father — who passed away in 2021 — before joining the business full time after graduating from high school in 1985. After a couple of years, he left to pursue other ventures but returned to work alongside Jerry in 1991. The two partnered up for about a decade, then Jerry retired, and Wade took on full ownership.
“Dad always wanted to stay small, so we were basically a two-man operation with a backhoe, trackhoe, skid loader and two dump trucks,” recalled Wade. “Our work was mainly residential, doing house foundations, sidewalks, driveways, a little bit of sewer and water. I decided that I wanted to expand, so we took on some good oilfield contracts building pads and roads, and it took off from there.”
Larger earthwork projects
During the past 25 years, Alexander Excavation’s expansion has continued, and the focus has shifted away from oilfield contracts to increasingly larger site excavation work, mainly in the commercial market. With a staff of about 40, Alexander Excavation offers full earthwork services that include everything to prepare a site for building, from stripping to finish grade, throughout the state of Wyoming.

“We do all types of dirt work, either as a general contractor or a subcontractor,” Wade explained.
Owner and President Wade Alexander charges a crusher with a Komatsu PC490LCi-11 IMC excavator at Alexander Excavation’s recycling yard.
“That includes any associated demolition and/or clearing that may need to be done, as well as putting in underground utilities. We provide full site packages, but we do break out our services and do straight dirt or utility jobs. Generally, our projects range from $1 million to $6 million.”
Alexander Excavation added a recycling operation to crush concrete and asphalt into road base. It also has a screen to produce high-quality topsoil and a trucking division that delivers materials and offers heavy hauling.
Despite its growth, Alexander Excavation maintains its family legacy. Wade’s wife, Robyn, is the treasurer, and their son, Ty, is now the vice president and a superintendent. Ty’s wife, Lexie, is the secretary.
Saving with Komatsu IMC
With growth came the need for a wider range of equipment. The Alexanders have chosen carefully to ensure they are getting the most efficient and productive machines possible. That means a large percentage of Alexander Excavation’s fleet is comprised of Komatsu intelligent machine control (IMC) dozers and excavators with integrated GPS grade control, including D39PXi, D51PXi, D61PXi, D71PXi, PC210LCi, PC360LCi and PC490LCi models. “We bought our first IMC machine about 10 years ago after we demoed a D51PXi on a road, and I never dreamed the IMC machines could be so good,” said Wade. “The time and efficiency that you save is unbelievable. We get jobs done much faster.”
Operations Manager Jeremy Martinez emphasized that the savings with IMC have been substantial: “I’ve calculated it, and we’ve saved about 75% of time compared to the old-school way of doing things. I’ve built several running tracks. In the old days, we used sonar and set up a wire. It would take two to three days to do that and shoot the sonar around the track. With IMC, in those two days, I can basically build the entire track, and we don’t have to wait for surveying and staking.” “The GPS capabilities of the Komatsu machines took us to another level.” – Ty Alexander, Vice President/Superintendent, Alexander Excavation
Ty added, “The GPS capabilities of the Komatsu machines took us to another level. I think the biggest driver of our success has always been the quality of work that we’re able to deliver on time. The GPS with the dozers and excavators helps us do that even faster. We have also added an aftermarket system to our PC138, which has helped us reduce hand digging in tight areas.” Alexander Excavation builds its own models and converts those from customers, which are uploaded into the machines. After carefully checking for accuracy, it puts the files to work.
“The accuracy has been spot-on; it’s tight,” described Robert Hatle, Alexander Excavation’s

GPS modeling expert. “We rarely have to do any fine grading or dress up work because the machines get right to grade. The savings are there. Doing things twice is never cost-effective. Getting it done the first time and right is hard to put a price on. In addition, we’re using Komatsu base and rover setups to check our grades. I think those are more
intuitive and easier to operate than what I was used to before coming here. It’s nice having the model and the surfaces all right there and having the ability to change as needed.”
Alexander Excavation works closely with Komatsu Company-owned Dealer West (Komatsu West) Territory Manager Shaun Baysinger to purchase the IMC equipment, as well as standard Komatsu excavators, dozers and articulated trucks, BOMAG compactors, and Montabert breakers. Baysinger and Komatsu West also helped set up Alexander Excavation with the My Komatsu online portal so that Alexander Excavation can track its machines’ hours, locations and other critical data. Additionally, Komatsu West handles scheduled services for the first 2,000 hours or three years under the Komatsu Care complimentary maintenance program. “Shaun and Komatsu are great people to work with.” – Wade Alexander, Owner/President, Alexander Excavation

“Shaun and Komatsu are great people to work with,” Wade declared. “I can call them up any time, and they will respond right away. Shaun knows what I need and what I don’t, which means he knows my business and how we can be most productive and efficient. Whether I’m renting or buying, he gets me what I’m looking for as quickly as possible.”
Opportunities to grow
Like his father, Ty grew up around the business. After graduating from the University of Wyoming with a civil engineering degree, he returned home to work full time for Alexander Excavation.

“Working in the family business is awesome,” stated Ty. “I’m proud of coming back and working here, and I hope to take it over one day. I think with our GPS capabilities and experience, we can continue to grow. My wife and I have a couple of small children, and hopefully someday, they may be interested in being the fourth generation to run Alexander Excavation.” Wade added, “I’m very proud of what we have built. I like the size of the company, but there’s room to grow. I would take the company as far as everybody wants to. With Ty and the great staff we have, we believe the opportunities are there.” ■ *The opinions expressed here are based on the customer’s specific experience. Results may vary.
Complimentary solutions
Offer provides exceptional value Komatsu is including Smart Construction solutions with the purchase of IMC equipment now through March 31
K
omatsu is giving customers added value when they purchase an intelligent machine control (IMC) dozer or excavator through March 31, 2026, by offering three Smart Construction solutions complimentary for a year. All customers who purchase a new IMC-equipped product receive Smart Construction Dashboard and Smart Construction Remote, and those buying a PC220LCi-12 IMC 3.0 excavator will also receive Smart Construction Fleet Lite. “We want to help our customers get better exposure to technology that enables them to get more out of their IMC machines.” – Ron Schwieters, Senior Manager, Smart Construction, Komatsu
“We want to help our customers get better exposure to technology that enables them to get more out of their IMC machines,” said Ron Schwieters, Senior Manager, Smart Construction, Komatsu. “IMC is a great investment based on the semi-automatic features alone, but there’s more production and efficiency to unlock with these and other Smart Construction solutions. The complimentary bundle equates to about a $9,000 value per year, plus productivity and efficiency gains.” Smart Construction Remote provides 3D data file transfer to a machine from anywhere with an internet connection, enabling project managers and others to update design changes without the time and costs of driving to the jobsite. They can also view the operator’s screen remotely and see exactly what the operator sees, if needed for troubleshooting or questions. Smart Construction Remote is compatible with the latest IMC, Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance, Topcon and Trimble GNSS systems.
plus design and drone data, to create a 3D virtual twin of your jobsite. This solution has many essential features and operational benefits: • Users can quickly measure cut-and-fill • Job completion is automatically calculated • 2D/3D cross-sections help users check elevation changes • Progress logs help users understand overall completion from chart to timeline • Heatmap visualizations show completed and remaining work, as well as cut/fill and overcut/overfill
“It’s a great tool for visualizing data and tracking progress at any time,” stated Schwieters. “That can help you make faster decisions that affect production and potentially save costs. For instance, if you see that you are behind on a project, you can allocate additional resources. If you are ahead, you can put resources into other places. It’s also easy and fast to create accurate reports for customers or regulators.”
Smart Construction Fleet Lite is a simple payload tracking solution for machines with an integrated payload meter. Payload history is sent back to the office every day, so project managers know how much material was moved and how that impacts the projected schedule and budget. “At this time, the PC220LCi-12 is the only one, but more will be coming in the future,” said Schwieters. “These are all great solutions that provide real value. Customers can work with their local dealers’ Smart Construction teams to learn more about them and how to get the most out of them for their operations.” ■
“Remote is an easy solution that’s proven to reduce costs,” noted Schwieters. “Updates can be done anytime and from practically anywhere. If it’s sent after hours, the update will occur the next time the operator starts the machine. It’s seamless and requires no input from the operator.”

A salute to a Komatsu West customer
Building on a family legacy BCX founder turned a love of digging in the dirt into one of southern Utah’s top earthmoving and aggregate supply operations Customer snapshot Company: Bryce Christensen Excavating (BCX) Location: St. George, Utah Employees: 50 Established: 1990 Areas of expertise: Excavation, site development, demolition, aggregate mining and supply, and recycling Komatsu equipment: WA50-5, WA380-8, WA475-10, WA480-8, WA500-8 wheel loaders; PC55MR-5, PC210LC-11, PC650LC-11 excavators; HM400-5 articulated trucks
S
outhern Utah’s red rock country has always been home for the Christensen family. Their roots run eight generations deep, back to the pioneers who settled Bloomington, grew broom corn and ran a small broom factory to supply the growing community. From those humble beginnings, each generation has carried forward a tradition of resilience, hard work and ingenuity. For Bryce Christensen, that meant turning a childhood love of digging in the dirt into one of southern Utah’s most respected excavation companies, Bryce Christensen Excavating (BCX). Through persistence, long days and willingness to tackle tough projects, he built the St. George-based company into a trusted name across the area. Bryce started with a skid steer and then added a dump truck, working hard to build from there. One small job led to another, and he teamed up with another contractor to form

B&B Excavating. Bryce eventually bought the partner out and launched BCX in 1990. Today, he’s transitioning away from the company that bears his name and making way for his children to take full leadership of BCX, which specializes in excavation, site development, demolition and mining operations. Bryce credits his wife, Neica, for her sacrifices in helping build the business as he worked nearly around the clock at times. Now, four of their five children are carrying BCX’s legacy forward. Kalli manages the office and keeps the administrative side of the business running, while ChyAnn handles sales, development, estimating and project management. Kyler supports logistics, helping ensure people, equipment and materials are where they need to be, and Cash oversees crushing operations and the company’s mines. “We now have the capabilities to offer full site packages.” – Cash Christensen, Operations Manager, BCX
“Dad slowly worked his way up and added on services as needed to take care of customers,” shared Cash. “He went from small residential work to doing residential and commercial site development, grading, site utilities and demolition work. We now have the capabilities to offer full site packages that include all those things, as well as clearing, finish grading, subgrade prep and paving. The paving we sub

out, but we will take responsibility for getting it done.”
Shifting focus
Cash indicated that while BCX continues to provide excavation services, the company’s focus has largely shifted toward producing and supplying aggregate from its two pits. Its original location, the Fort Pierce Pit in St. George, is no longer being actively mined and is used mainly as a supply yard. It includes landscape materials and a recycling operation that crushes old materials and makes new products from them. Some of the materials are transported there from the second site, the Southern BCX Pit.
“At the Southern BCX Pit, we have about 25 feet of material on top that can be shoved down with a dozer or loaded with a trackhoe onto trucks, then there is about 20 feet below that we have to blast,” described Cash. “From both locations, we have trucks that can deliver to customers, or they can come and pick the materials up themselves. We’re here to serve their needs either way. In addition, we will work with customers who are looking for custom specifications. I have them send me a gradation, and we will do our best to make it. Most of the time, we can.”
Cash added that BCX carries about 25 products that range in size from eighth-inch sand up to 5-foot boulders, with the most popular product being spec road base, followed by gas sand. BCX also has a wash plant, allowing it to supply ready-mix operations with washed concrete sand and rock.
Getting efficiency with Komatsu
BCX has relied on Komatsu equipment to move dirt and aggregate for more than a decade. Its first purchase was a WA200 wheel loader used to transport pipe, backfill and load trucks in its earthmoving operations. “We are focused on efficiency, and Komatsu has given us that along with solid production.” – Cash Christensen, Operations Manager, BCX
“Komatsu has given us the reliability to grow,” said Bryce. “Their equipment is part of our story — it’s what helps us deliver for our clients.”
BCX’s fleet now includes WA380, WA475, WA480 and WA500 wheel loaders, PC210 and PC650 excavators, and HM400 articulated trucks, which it has purchased from Komatsu Company-owned Dealer West (Komatsu West) with the help of Territory Manager Trent Baxendale. “We are focused on efficiency, and Komatsu has given us that along with solid production,” noted Cash. “To be most efficient, we match our equipment to the task. For instance, the wash plant only runs about 80 tons an hour, so we use the WA380 to feed it because there is no need for a bigger loader. On the other hand, we want to get trucks loaded and out of the pit as fast as possible. That’s where the WA500 comes in. We can load most trucks in a couple of scoops. Our WA475 is just the right size for feeding the crusher.”
13
BCX operators move material from the pit to the crusher with the HM400 trucks, which are loaded with the PC650 excavator.
“Some of the material is pretty hard with some layers that need to be popped up, and the PC650 has the power to do that in most cases,” explained Cash. “It also gives us the ability to load the trucks faster than what we were using before we got it. We can load the trucks in about six passes, so the PC650 is quick and keeps them moving steadily. We went
with the 40-ton articulated trucks for their versatility. We use them in the pit, but we can also easily transport them and use them on an excavation site.” Trent has worked closely with BCX to help determine what equipment best suits its needs.
“Trent’s been great about ensuring the right fit,” declared Cash. “As an example, we were looking at a WA480 for the crusher, and he said we should go with the WA475. It does the same job and is actually a little quicker. Trent’s been our sales rep for as long as we have been buying Komatsu, and his and Komatsu’s support are a big reason why we keep using it. The addition of Komatsu Care on the newer machines has really helped take some of the load off of our mechanics and allowed them to focus on other things. We know the services are being done on time by Komatsu techs, so we don’t worry about that. Komatsu’s good about having the parts we need on hand, too.” “The addition of Komatsu Care on the newer machines has really helped take some of the load off of our mechanics and allowed them to focus on other things.” – Cash Christensen, Operations Manager, BCX

Giving back
Bryce’s grandchildren represent an eighth generation of Christensens to call Utah’s Dixie home. He hopes that one day they will take an interest in leading BCX. If they do, they will contribute to the legacy of not only building southern Utah but also providing critical support to the community. For instance, BCX delivered vital services in the aftermath of a 100-year flood in 2005 that destroyed 28 homes. More recently, it assisted with the demolition of homes lost in the Pine Valley Fire. “This isn’t just about building pads and moving dirt,” reflected Bryce. “It’s about supporting the community we’ve lived in for generations.” For now, Bryce and Neica’s children will lead BCX and possibly grow it.
BCX uses a variety of Komatsu wheel loaders, including a WA480-8 at its supply yard in St. George.

14
“There is potential, and we will look for ways to do it,” stated Cash. “The Southern BCX Pit has about 20 years of reserves left, and of course, we have the ability to ramp back up on the earthmoving side, if necessary. Fortunately, we all get along well and have shared vision, so I think the future’s pretty bright.” ■ *The opinions expressed here are based on the customer’s specific experience. Results may vary.

Butler and his wife, LaDonna, recently celebrated their 26th anniversary. The couple has two daughters and three dogs. They love the outdoors, especially camping and trail riding in their side-by-side. Butler has been around equipment his entire life. A native of Deweyville, Utah, he worked on a farm during his childhood. “Every time a PSSR visited, that role appealed to me. Now, here I am. I love what I do.” – Brice Butler, PSSR, Komatsu Company-owned Dealer West
“Farmers work on their equipment, and that’s where I learned to weld and fix things,” Butler recalled. “I moved to the Salt Lake area when I graduated high school and got into the construction industry. I started out driving a truck for a paving company. One winter, they asked me if I wanted to move into the shop as a mechanic. I did that, and within a couple of years, I was the equipment manager.”
Butler added, “Every time a PSSR visited, that role appealed to me. Now, here I am. I love what I do.” ■

K
omatsu’s new PC220LC-12 and PC220LCi-12 excavators are built for contractors who want more than just power. Delivering the most comfortable and advanced excavator work environment Komatsu has ever created, the PC220LC-12 and PC220LCi-12 are operator-first machines that blend performance, comfort and smart technology to help boost productivity, shift after shift.
From the ground up, these 21- to 24-ton-class excavators have been reimagined and engineered around a simple premise — empower operators and you’ll power productivity on your jobsite. The cab offers 28% more space, 30% more legroom, improved visibility, reduced noise and vibration, and a high-quality heated air-suspension seat. The new 8-inch HD monitor puts machine data, controls and customization options at an operator’s fingertips. Performance gains back up the comfort. A new electronically controlled hydraulic system and high-output engine help deliver an up to 8% increase in digging force, up to 7% more lift capacity and up to 20% cost reduction in fuel than the previous Komatsu PC210LC-11 model. The new P plus mode boosts workload productivity by up to 18%.
Advanced tech and safety
While the PC220LC-12 has some integrated baseline smart technology, such as 2D machine control, contractors looking for next-level capabilities can step up to the Komatsu PC220LCi-12, which adds intelligent machine control (IMC) 3.0, Komatsu’s latest smart technology.
Automated features on the PC220LCi-12, such as auto grade assist, auto stop control, bucket angle hold, compaction control, minimum distance control, auto swing and payload monitoring, help reduce operator workload while improving accuracy and boosting productivity. 3D boundary control is the first OEM factory-integrated feature of its kind in the construction industry. It’s a unique technology that helps operators work efficiently across the entire jobsite by remembering multiple restriction zones specific to each work area. Auto-swing with travel stop functionality is also an industry first for excavators.
To promote zero harm, these excavators have features like rollover avoidance, KomVision 360-degree camera coverage, object detection, automatic deceleration controls, seat belt reminders and more. Maintenance is simplified with ground-level service points and extended replacement intervals, helping reduce maintenance costs by up to 20%. By empowering operators with enhanced comfort, cutting-edge technology and customizable features, the Komatsu PC220LC-12 and PC220LCi-12 excavators represent the next step forward for contractors seeking to maximize productivity and reduce total cost of ownership. ■ *All percentage claims are based on a comparison to the previous PC210LC-11 model. Reductions in maintenance costs are due to longer replacement intervals for hydraulic oil and oil filters and longer cleaning intervals for the particulate filter.

Winterize equipment
Prepare your fleet for winter weather Follow these best practices to keep your equipment serviced, protected and operating reliably throughout the cold-weather season
N
o matter where you operate, cold weather could potentially affect your jobsites. Preparation helps ensure your machines are protected, so they can continue to give you good production or are properly stored against the elements.
Service your equipment
As temperatures drop, it’s a great time to bring your equipment in for scheduled service and take advantage of programs like Komatsu Care. Routine maintenance performed by certified technicians through your local Komatsu dealership helps identify cold-weather vulnerabilities. Our seasoned technicians can help check filters and fluids are properly winter-ready, and do the work to keep machines operating at peak reliability. Komatsu Care provides complimentary factory-scheduled maintenance on eligible machines for the first three years or 2,000 hours, helping you protect your equipment and reduce unexpected downtime through the winter season.
Fluids are essential
It’s recommended that you switch to a winter-blended diesel fuel to help protect your engine and its components. It’s essential that the automatic DEF line is purged before shutting down for the day or for months. Contact your local Komatsu dealer to get this service performed.
Visual inspections are key before startup
Before operating, make sure to do a thorough visual inspection of the machine to check for any irregularities, and address them before starting the machine to prevent potential damage. Start the machine, and let it warm up to proper operating temperature before you begin the workday.
Keep track of the undercarriage
Pay special attention to your equipment’s undercarriage during cold conditions. Brush off any snow that may have accumulated overnight or during breaks before entering the machine to reduce the chance of slipping. It’s especially vital to keep tracks cleaned to prevent an accumulation of mud and debris that could freeze and damage crucial components. Consider replacing your equipment’s undercarriage at your local Komatsu dealer to prepare your machine for spring.
Don’t overlook the cab
Cabs are often not thought of when it comes to cold temperatures, but they should be. To keep operators comfortable, ensure that the heater is in proper working order, as well as the heated seat if the machine is equipped with one. ■
Make sure your equipment is prepared for cold temperatures this winter.

Innovative undercarriage
Control wear while driving productivity Komatsu’s Parallel Link Undercarriage System aims to maximize machine life, minimize downtime and cut long-term operating costs
A
well-built undercarriage does more than support the machine — it can help protect uptime, help control costs, and assist performance in tough conditions. From bushing design to track tensioning, every detail matters when it comes to keeping equipment productive over time. That’s why Komatsu’s Parallel Link Undercarriage System (PLUS) is engineered with the goal of distributing wear evenly, simplifying maintenance and delivering long-term durability where it counts most.
“Undercarriage costs can represent up to 50% of a dozer’s lifetime maintenance,” said Raf Bukowski, Product Marketing Manager for HST Dozers, Komatsu. “That’s why Komatsu made durability and service life the top priorities with the PLUS undercarriage. We’ve focused on smarter wear distribution, simplified maintenance and materials that last. All of that [can] translate into real savings and less downtime for customers.”
Performance-focused design
The most notable innovation of PLUS is its rotating bushing technology. Unlike systems that require manual bushing rotation, Komatsu’s design allows bushings to float around the pin, promoting even wear with the goal of extending component life.
“With PLUS, you’re getting nearly double the life compared to traditional undercarriages before any major intervention is needed,” Bukowski explained. “Time is money in this industry. If you can run longer without pulling machines into the shop, that’s a huge win.” PLUS also includes a self-adjusting idler that automatically works to maintain optimal track tension. This is designed to help minimize track slippage and premature wear, helping operators maintain performance while assisting to protect the system over time.
improvements based on field feedback. This isn’t the same undercarriage you saw five or six years ago.”
Smart technology integration
PLUS pairs with Komatsu’s intelligent machine control (IMC) technology to help control overall machine stress and promote extended undercarriage life. As the load increases during operation, the machine automatically adjusts the blade to help prevent track slippage, helping to control unnecessary wear on the system.
“Our dozers don’t just push dirt — they respond like experienced operators,” commented Tony Kosolofski, Komatsu IMC Product Manager in Canada. “With IMC 2.0, we’ve given the machine the ability to predict terrain changes and adjust proactively. That helps reduce operator fatigue and undercarriage strain.” “With PLUS, you’re getting nearly double the life compared to traditional undercarriages before any major intervention is needed.”
-Raf Bukowski, Product Marketing Manager for HST Dozers, Komatsu
Komatsu IMC dozers like the D71PXi-24 and D61PXi-24 use track mapping to capture real-time as-built data and apply features such as lift layer control, which helps promote consistent compaction thicknesses. That data integrates seamlessly with Komatsu’s Smart Construction Dashboard, enabling users to compare performance day by day. “When we talk about undercarriage wear, we’re also talking about how you use the machine,” Kosolofski added. “Technology that limits unnecessary spinning, slipping or overworking helps stretch the life of every component.” ■
“It works like a cruise control for track tension,” stated Bukowski. “It’s snug enough to perform well but loose enough to help protect the components. That balance adds up over thousands of operating hours.”
With durability in mind, Komatsu also redesigned key structural elements. Carrier rollers now feature thicker material and updated flange geometry to promote even link contact, while segmented sprockets are shaped to shed material and resist packing in challenging terrain. “Every inch of the system is purpose-built,” Bukowski declared. “We’ve made iterative

Increase certainty
Proactively schedule a rebuild Preplanning with Firm Future Order program guarantees parts availability and helps reduce your large equipment’s overall total cost of ownership
L
arge off-road machinery frames generally last 40,000 to 60,000 hours or more, depending on use and the conditions and materials they are in on a daily basis. The life of most of their components are typically about half as long, according to Matt Beinlich, Senior Director, Remanufacturing Business, Komatsu. “Most of these machines see their first rebuild at around 20,000 hours,” said Beinlich. “The advantage is that the customer gets a like-new machine from a components standpoint at a much lower cost, and rebuilding with remanufactured components using Komatsu’s Firm Future Order, or FFO, program further enhances the savings and helps reduce the overall total cost of ownership.”
Beinlich added, “The frames of these machines are designed for long life, so there is a ton of value in rebuilding instead of replacing. That value is increased by being proactive with FFO, because you are guaranteed parts availability without expedited or air freight costs to ship parts, which can be quite expensive. We can use the most efficient methods that the supply chain offers.”
FFO is a proactive approach to rebuilding, according to Goran Zeravica, Senior Product Manager, Komatsu. “The idea is to plan well ahead of time with your Komatsu dealer or distributor to take equipment out of service,” Zeravica said. “FFO provides a long lead time — at least 120 days — and guarantees parts availability at a set price and often at a discounted rate in exchange for placing the order so far in advance. It gives everyone plenty of preparation time.”
Coverage up to 12,000 hours
Beinlich and Zeravica encourage customers to use certified dealer technicians to do the FFO rebuild using genuine remanufactured components, saying it’s a great way to ensure they are installed correctly and covered under a one-year, unlimited-hours warranty. Major components are also backed by Komatsu’s Quality Assurance Program of up to 12,000 hours with labor covered. Some conditions apply. “We want customers to have the best possible experience with their reman components, so we encourage them to have the work done by trained dealer technicians who are skilled at this type of work,” said Zeravica. “They are also going to use high-quality genuine Komatsu lubricants and filters. It’s really an ideal solution.” ■
The Firm Future Order (FFO) program is a proactive approach to scheduling a rebuild that guarantees parts availability and can help lower your overall total cost of ownership.

Komatsu awareness
Proud partner in the nation’s growth For over a century, Komatsu has been proud to manufacture innovative products and employ thousands of people across the United States
K
omatsu is a proud member of the United States manufacturing community and directly employs more than 8,000 people in the U.S. Its U.S. operations are largely export-driven, with a cumulative trade surplus of more than $7.5 billion during the last decade.
U.S. manufacturing operations were launched in 1986 with the production of the first machine, a WA600 wheel loader, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Today, Komatsu produces excavators, HM400 articulated trucks and forestry products in Chattanooga, which are shipped globally around the world. Additional manufacturing operations in the U.S. include Newberry, South Carolina; Duffield, Virginia; Homer City, Pennsylvania; Lebanon, Kentucky; Longview, Texas; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Peoria, Illinois; Shawano, Wisconsin; Solon, Ohio; Reno, Pennsylvania; and Wellington, Utah. The initial North American headquarters was established in 1970 in San Francisco, six years after the first Komatsu machine, a dozer, was introduced to North America. Subsequent headquarters included Atlanta, followed by Chicago, where it is currently located. With the acquisition of legacy brands Joy Global and P&H, which have been manufactured in the U.S. for over a century, Komatsu established a large mining headquarters in Milwaukee.
Komatsu’s presence in the U.S. is an extension of its rich global history, which began in Japan more than 100 years ago when founder Meitaro
Takeuchi sought a way to save the livelihoods of community members relying on a local mine. At the time, the local copper mine, a vital source of employment, was in danger of being shut down. Takeuchi and a group of investors rolled out their first product, a one-cylinder sheet-forming machine, in 1924, after founding Komatsu Ltd. in 1921. Komatsu continues to manufacture industrial presses today. Over the next century, Komatsu expanded its product portfolio to include construction and mining equipment, as well as forklifts and forestry products. It has made several strategic acquisitions, including the addition of U.S.-based manufacturer TimberPro Inc., which has a long history of innovative forestry machinery. Several other Komatsu-owned subsidiaries are either based in the U.S. or operate facilities in the U.S. to distribute and support their products, including American Battery Solutions, Hensley Industries, Montabert, Lehnhoff, Tramac, Quadco and Mining Technology Solutions.
Creating value through core principles Across all its product lines, Komatsu continues its commitment to “Creating Value Together” with its customers. It’s doing that through its core values, which include:
Ambition: With a ‘challenging spirit’ and without fear of failure, we innovate and always aspire to do more.
Komatsu has various manufacturing operations across the U.S., including one in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Creating value together . . . continued
Perseverance: Even when the work is difficult, we remain committed to our promises and work to reliably carry them through to completion. Collaboration: Creating value comes from teamwork, inclusion, respect, diversity and a win-win approach to all relationships.

Authenticity: To earn and maintain trust, we work to act with sincerity, integrity and honesty, and to communicate transparently. That aligns with the principles Takeuchi stood by as he and his team worked to grow operations — quality first, technology and innovation, globalization, and the development of people.
Technology and innovation have become an increasingly significant part of the overall picture, particularly with the advent of GPS grading.
