A Team Approach

Holland credits his professional success to a couple of large developers that were like mentors to him. “One had a thousand employees when he exited his business. The other was doing a thousand lots a year when he left. And these guys were just invaluable to me.”

He also credits his father and his wife, relishing the time his father spent with him as a child, especially since he recently became a father as well.

Giving back is another key to their success. Through a program they call Helping Hands, for every home sold, a donation is made to a community partner of the buyer’s choice. Partners include local non-profit Christian organizations, like Habitat for Humanity, a ministry college, and charities that help women and children.

Holland’s role in the company these days is more of an adviser and leader. “My job really is to just empower our team, guide them, and help make sure that we hold to our company’s values on a day in and day out basis. And no matter how many homes we build, we build them all the same way.”

Trade subcontractors are seen as partners in Holland’s eyes. “We can’t do it without them.” His team works hard to stay in constant communication with their subcontractors, letting them know about upcoming projects and new communities. “We try to do the best job we can with how we treat them, and we hope to build relationships that will lead to a steady pipeline of trades.

When it comes to making hiring choices, Holland cares less about the hard skills as compared to character and a commitment to become a part of something. “None of them are going to know how to build a house. We’re going to have to teach that.”

They’ve recently started integrating some of the trade work with their own forces, such as cabinetry. “We’re not trying to compete and take market share from our trade partners, but to continue to shore up the work where we see that the industry is struggling and provide the same culture that we have here at Holland Homes.” While they may have more employees than other developers, Holland sees this as an advantage, as it “allows us to have the capacity to continue to scale and to do what we say we’re going to do.”

Safety is always a priority both for the Holland crew and their trade partners. “We allow them to prioritize their health over the hours that they’re working to make sure everybody’s staying hydrated and safe. I think sometimes in the residential industry, a lot of these trades just aren’t conditioned to some of these safety practices, and we try to prioritize that.”

“We’re going to create a place that not only changes where people live, but how they live.”

Looking back, Holland wouldn’t change a thing about his life or his business. “I know who I was in 2007 and all that I went through. The lessons that I learned have made us who we are now, and I feel like God’s used every one of those moments and I just wouldn’t want to redo them. This is what we’re called to do. When you see the impact that it’s made and the commitment we have to that, we just can’t run from that. I’m super fortunate to be able to get to do something that I love.”

“It’s going to be evident that our heartbeat at Holland Holmes really is to serve people and make an impact through that.”
